  • Hello,

I’m trying the fast diet this week and I am interested in the health benefits along with some weight loss. I’m looking to lose 5-10 pounds. I enjoy exercising and am concerned that fasting will disrupt my exercise schedule. I did try a HIT workout this week and was pleasantly surprised with how tired I felt after.

I am going to fast on M and Th for 6 weeks and I am going to try to cut out all alcohol during that time. I am hoping that I will be at my goal weight and can go down to 1 fast a week after the 6 weeks. The no alcohol will be the biggest challenge…

Any advice or fasting buddies would be appreciated! Thanks!

Even though I am in the U.S., your questions are relevant worldwide.

I have not noticed a dip in exercise performance on my fast day. I exercise in the morning (biking to work and a 30 minutes high intensity fitness class) and before dinner (biking home).

Alcohol has a lot of calories. If you like drinking, cutting it out is hard. It will help you lose the small amount needed.

Thanks Amy, it helps to know that I should still be able to exercise on a fast day. However, I don’t think I’ll try it until I can be confident I can make it through a few fasts. I had a protein bar around 11:00 today and plan to have a dinner that’s around 320 calories. I’m also drinking tea and water with electrolytes.

I know I should keep busy, but my energy is down quite a bit now. I know if I keep a positive attitude I can make it through! Thanks again for your support.

    Hi Emily and welcome:

The way 5:2 works is you go to bed, get up, eat 500 or fewer calories during your waking hours, go to bed, get up and eat to your TDEE or less – twice a week. On all 7 days of the week you can eat foods you want to eat – there are no forbidden foods, or foods you have to eat. For the first month or so focus on doing your diet days correctly (500 calories or less) and most everything else will fall into place.

Here is what TDEE means: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/tdee-for-the-curious-or-why-dont-i-lose-weight-faster/

    Good Luck!

Yes, try some fasting days out first. I thought I would be weak when exercising in a fasting state, and maybe at first I was, but now I notice no difference.

I have been doing this since Feb. 2014
