CG, and a hug from me too! Reading your post made my day.
As someone who is always way more often off topic than on topic, I completely agree, losing weight is the thing that has brought us together, but its the reasons we are overweight that bring us close, the kinsmanship on the journey and sharing the succeses, but also sharing the set backs.
It can be a lonely and very misunderstood world out there, even our nearest and dearest dont know what we are going through. Ok, they support us but I’m not sure they understand.
Ill give you an example.
Hubby and I were chatting over a coffee. Quick background, been together 25 years, I’d put on 5 stone in that time, he’d put on maybe 5 lbs.
I have spent the time eating the same – coming from a big family serving navvies portions, before we got together had evening job in a bar for years, lived life in constant motion, could eat what I liked and never put on weight.
It took a long time to see regular meals, contentment and a sweet tooth can have an effect of weight gain.
Still cant explain hating summer hols and growing to hate my body but doing bugger all about it until now. Could write a book about how becoming fatter made me feel less of a person.
In six months, lost nearly forty pounds. OH decided to accompany me, though never actually did a fast day, but lost 6 lbs. I think my healthier eating might explsin his weight loss – he thinks its because we have bith been on 5:2.
Anyway, back to chat.
I was trying to explain that I was losing and gaining the same few pounds over the last few weeks, put it down to having a couple of biscuits with coffees, and eating the scones and teacakes he was buying, and generally taking my foot off the pedal.
His reply – ”just eat less and exercise more”. With a comment that I had eased back on the exercise and needed to do more.
Now how many times have we heard or read this?
I tentatively explained that actually, although exercise was great for a milion reasons, not the answer for weight loss. He scoffed at this notion, said I was making it up, he couldnt believe it – then recalled that when he was doing a lot of manual work he had lost LOADS of weight, his trousers were falling down.
My hubby has never ever been a gym bunny and, as I mentioned, always been about the same weight. I suggested he had perhaps changed shape a little, but not lost loads of weight – he has been a 31-32″ waist as long as I have known him!
As discussions sometimes do, we both became very irritated with the others point of view, though my irritation might have been due to his comment when I asked how he thought I looked do far – ”Not bad, I suppose” was probably NOT the best answer he could have come up with.
And to add insult to injury, in six months I’ve gone from being a real couch potato to 10-12000 steps a day and gym twice a week! More exercise than he does!
There is an interesting moral to this story is you need people in your life who really get it is not simply to ‘just eat less and exercise more”, because, as in the case of my hubby, they are not necessarily eating less and exercising more themselves to stay at their healthy weight.
And perhaps it has taken this long to do anything about my weight is because Ive never had the most important part – the help of a network of folk who completely understand!
Morning all!
Milena, I feel for you! Good on you for doing so well with less than enthusiastic support on the home front. I think people with your husband’s metabolism must find it hard to understand the challenge for us. Women are meant to store fat so that we can feed babies in lean times, genetically, and men to be more muscular so we are up against it from the start.
You are right that this group makes such a difference in that sense.
It sounds as though you already know what you need to do to up the ante and save the scones etc for less often. You should still be able to have the occasional one. I think that would be considered “normal eating”. Hard when OH is bringing them home though!
Good to see you back on here, CG, we were worrying. Fit, glad you are having fun!
We just need to find Gypsy now!
Fast day went well with the exception of one teeny biscuit, it really was small, at the hairdresser’s. I ate it without thinkingβ¦ and forgot to ask what it was to calorie check. Other than that it was my boiled egg and a spoonful of cottage cheese at around 3.30 and then eye fillet and plain salad for dinner plus a bit of milk in a few tea and coffees. Without the biscuit it is definitely under. I have been doing the same old for so long that I would have to look up my records on MFP to remember exactly what it is. I didn’t mean to eat so late but I was busy. Yay for being busy on Fast Days!
The weekend was not so good so Friday’s weigh in may be less than exciting this week, time will tell. And of course well know that just because that biscuit was teeny doesn’t mean the calories were!
SJ, 511 is fine! I just went on to the recipe thread to look for your chili recipe, I noticed we have lost a few members. I wonder if it was just that they didn’t need us any more or whether it was our lengthy digressions? Never mind. There is plenty of support out there for those who need something a little different. Let’s hope it is because they were all so successful that they found a maintenance thread!
Milena, fossicking is usually used to describe looking for gemstones, opals etc. It means looking through lots of stuff to find something good! Maybe it is more of an australian term than I knew!
Have a good day all.
Hi Milena
from the dictionary :
“Fossicking is a term found in Cornwall, Australia and New Zealand referring to prospecting, especially in more recent times, when carried out as a recreational activity. This can be for gold, precious stones, fossils, etc. by sifting through a prospective area.”
I think it suits looking for antiques (sifting the “gold” from the “dross”) pretty well, doesn’t it?
I love your above post. It is so absolutely true!! I have gone through pretty much the same thing. And yes, an OH who believes I “just need to exercise more”. Now, I have always gone to the gym, and was generally fit even at my higher weight, so that remark was a big-time husband fail. You can imagine how I reacted π
But it was not his or anyone else’s fault per se, they just cannot comprehend. Now that I have achieved some weight loss and become much healthier(now where close to your amazing loss, hats off to you!)… he and my trainer at the gym say… now you can exercise more!!
Arrghhh….
having said that, more muscle mass means that my weight loss has been slower, but also, that probably saved me from fully becoming a diabetic inspite of obesity, family history and high carb diet.So I am thankful to OH and others in my life for encouraging me in that direction.
CG – Interesting point about breaking fast later in the day – I never thought it would be possible for me, but last few weeks I am doing liquid fast (so only water and very low-cal liquids on FDs – black coffee, one la zuppa soup at about 2 pm), apart other benefits (no planning or carrying food!!), its funny I felt less hungry than when I was eating on FDs.
Wow,when people ask me what I do I’ll tell ’em I’m a professional fossicker!!!!
People think my hubby and I don’t work, as we sell second hand jewellery and silver at fairs and on eBay. Just had coffee this afternoon with bro in law to discuss looking after ma in law. He actually said that he can’t help during the day as he works!
He means cos he works in an office.
So now I can say I’m a Fossicker, which is probably most appropriate as I deal in gold and silver. Thank you!
Lotus, we seem to have twin lives – wish I looked asΒ good as you!!!!!
BTW, we older ladies know it is important to accept compliments graciously, perhaps it’s because they become think on the ground!
CG, great meds, you’re sounding wonderful – and wise as always!
Thanks everyone for the welcome! I’ve tried to join in a few conversations on this site but mostly been ignored. Should have known I could trust Aussies to be extra welcoming π
I certainly am going to get some of the Jarrah hot chocolate thanks guys. I think my biggest weakness is my hot drinks, I’m constantly sipping on tea coffee or chocolate. I cant stand drinks without milk either so I need a substitute. 6 months ago I was having 2.5 sugars in my tea and now Im down to 1 small teaspoon so I’m getting there.
Reading through your posts I just wanted to say its really encouraging to see you support each other, and the advice I’ve picked up already is awesome!
I don’t know any of you yet, but here’s a extremely brief about me. I’m a mother of x2 5 year olds, i’m 29 and work as a Registered Nurse on a medical and Oncology ward. I’ve always had issues with body image so in the past have used exercise to control my weight. Now I’m older and have a family and work responsibilities I’m not finding the time for exercise as much so have decided to give this a try.
Thanks again guys, it helped a lot yesterday knowing I wasn’t alone with my belly rumbling – now to make that cup of tea….
Thank you kindly Milena (says I, bowing graciously on this side of the computer π ). In Australia, being a fossicker IS a job, they need a commercial license to be one! (OK, so google dictionary didn’t like “fossicker” – auto-corrects it to “frolicker”;) )
Sarah – You will find many RNs and other medical professionals on this thread. You are at home here π But then, I am not one, but I am STILL at home here π
CG – truer words could not be said. the social conditioning to offer special (and so, automatically, richer?) food to company, to make extra food just in case (in case of what? Famine? foreign invasion?) etc is deeply ingrained.
Perhaps there are ways to make food special without making it richer. Choicest vegetables in season, choicest meat/chicken, grilled with great care and with special herbs etc, followed by the best seasonal fresh fruit…
Milena I always think of chooks (chickens) as fossicking!!! What they do scratching out in the yard π The best part of 5:2 for me is that I don’t have to knock myself out exercising, just what I can cope with normally and the intermittent fast is enough to lose at a fairly steady rate. Blokes don’t get that housework can be a good exercise choice too and males and females often gain or lose differently. So we really do get it. So glad you are on this site with us.
Lotus I manage FD’s better when I stick to mainly liquids for most of the day too, fill up faster at dinner also. I always have a milky coffee (70 cals) at around 9:30 -10:00 then apart from black teas or water drinks just the La Zuppa soup (23 cals) at around 3:00. Dinner was Bird’s Eye steamed fish over cabbage and 1/2 carrot on the side and totalled 290 cals. After an apple and cup of tea with a bit of milk came in at 373. Wasn’t a ‘hungry’ day though.
Up wondered what your go-to FD meal was, think I’ll give it a go. Getting bored with my 2 plans.
Sarah lots of support on here and we enjoy getting to know one another a little too. Welcome aboard.
CG how good to hear from you, been thinking about you heaps. Love the picture of your ‘boys’ smelling the same shrub over and over!
Fit, hope you are enjoying yourself in France ….sigh.
SJ glad for your encouragement, maybe you can work out how to put a photo of your lovely new granddaughter on here for us to coo over. Waving to Dawg, GG and Serena. Enjoy (but not too much:-) ) your normal eating day everyone. YY xx
Wow what a lovely, lively forum this morning! And CG may I say welcome back…..we have so missed you and your morning wake-up calls!!!! However still don’t worry if you miss now & then if you’re not up to it. You must know by now that we understand. XX
Lotus LOL “in case of what famine foreign invasion?” you’re so right. I know that as a hostess I cook heaps but when we get invited out I look at the simple amount they have, thinking it’s not enough..and yet it always is! I reckon that we’re all the same…the more food we can see, like in a buffet, the more we allow ourselves to eat. So simpler healthier food & less of it is kinder to our guests also.
As to our old, ingrained lifetime habits I’m finding that it takes me a while to drop them. Like the Brumbys scroll I bought the other day – it’s taken me 2 or 3 times to finally decide that they are NOT worth buying, a pile of flour with a few bits of other mega-processed ingredients, & I just didn’t enjoy it. But it took 3 times to convince me. Slow learner I guess! But important thing is I got there.
Oh Sarah another nurse you’ll feel right at home here. Good job with the sugars too.
UT I’ll put the recipe for Classic Chilli up today for you – tweak it a bit too.
Milena a hearty yes, so agree about the support of a network of like-minded folks. And re your OH’s comments. Mine has been better this time around but can be very offhand and encouragement/compliments is not his forte at all.
Well enjoy your feed days all but take care not to undo the benefits of your fast day either, so enjoy some treats in moderation, something you’ve been looking forward to. Pick and choose what you have – not everything you lay eyes on! suejen XXXX
Hi Yum. I was eating that twice a week in the U.S! at least it is super quick to prepare and kept my husband happy! Now I’m back I have one meal of the Bird’s Eye steamed fish but my husband loathes that so on that night will cook himself some eggs. It means that his fast day has a lot of eggs and a tin of tuna but he seems to be happy enough.
Milena, I wish you could shop with me! I wanted to get a vintage ring for my 30th wedding anniversary but have no idea what is what so never did!
Hi team and welcome to the newbies.
Milena thanks for info re Mary Queen of Scots. Yes the setting would make a beautiful setting for a movie, not to mention her life story. Hmm interesting re your OH and being overweight. I’m of the opinion that more women become overweight than men is because we have or had constantly changing hormones. We are usually more active when we are young, raising kids, constant household chores etc. Also there is a whole lot of other physiology and hormonal changes that go on. The hunger hormone etc. it’s all a bit of a minefield. If it was as easy as eating less and exercising more, there would not be a whole industry related to fad diets of some sort. Our 5:2 is not like that. It’s a way of life and eating.
CG good to see that you still read our posts. I’m so sorry that you are still in pain. Please feel free to whinge and vent all you like. We are a AD family and are there for eachother.
Sujen we seem to be very alike. I too find it difficult to stick to inert 500 cals these days. I too feel as though I need the Jarrah and have a cuppa after lunch and after dinner to warm me up. I still get cold on
FDs.
XX Dawg
SJ – I had a “Brumby’s Scroll” moment today too lol! Had a schnitzel sandwich for lunch after a few months, thinking of much I will enjoy it and allowing myself the treat etc etc… what a waste of calories and money that was! now it felt flavorless and I threw half the bread away as it was too much bread, and dearly wished I had gone for a heap of vegetables and spicy sauce with the schnitzel instead. Have come back to office with a sick feeling and beginnings of a headache. Do they put MSG or chemicals in the thing?
Anyhow, no more schnitzy sangas for me, or maybe I will need to fall in the same pit few times before realizing the trap.
Hi gang! So sorry to have left you all in the lurch, must be more than a week since I have posted and no chance of catching op on all posts(must be about 20 pages!) but I’ve read back a couple and so glad you got to see my idol, Fit. Onya!
I see you are still struggling with post op nerve pain CG. Sucks! and it’s a catch 22, because nerves are the one thing that DON’T improve with exercise. they need Time (sometimes mega, like months) to SETTLE. SO YOU CAN’T MAN UP AND FORCE THE MONGREL TO TOUGHEN UP! (no matter how cross it makes you with yourself!) It’s not an ‘I can DO it!’ challenge to move through the pain. It’s the OPPOSITE (Like ‘I WON’T stress because I can’t do it.. YET) Settling physical nerve endings begins with calming thought waves, because they are the beach your stress wave crashes down on (fIGHT, FLIGHT, FRIGHT EXCELLERATION/ADRENALIN RUSH EQUELS OOOOUCH! to raw nerve endings (and stress stores excess cortisol to fuel agro @#!!%* ooover its! It’s a cycle. You irritate it and it will show you whose boss! After all, it’s YOUR mind over YOUR matter! We’re looking for Nirvana here, not NERVE, Super Girl.
Remember that when the drug/pain fog muddies your mind, mate and (I so know what a downer it all is), but get your mantras embedded: try:

DON’T take a pill to push uphill!
Keep it WARM , you KNOW the drill!”
********
Evr’y thing’s luv’ly

Chin up and know that you’re such a luv’ly li’l ol’ guinea pig for new age thinkin’! You prove it’s power every time you send inspiration across cyber space to others(like all the time!). This thing isn’t gunna beat you, just stop belting yourself up! Sharing is not whinging and you only dress up for strangers, so let it all hang out here. The law of physics and ‘God/s of all nations states that what you give, so shall you receive. You’ll be right, mate.
And I have to go now, sorry to all for being so erratic and ignorant, if you have sent posts to me, I’ll try to catch up. But I am giving my time to keeping things positive here as we await the Leprechaun’s diagnosis deadline next week.(I’m hoping for at best, stalemate, because progression is a terminal pathway). It’s hard to keep stress levels curative in the shadow of the noose. but I do try to practice what I preach, (just as you do CG, I do feel a wavelength there, must be what prompted me to log on) but I must back to my reality for now.
So,lots of gardening and together projects (I’m afraid I suddenly came over all helpless and need assistance with everything… ) As to 5:2, I’m struggling to stick to regular fasting without the daily dose of focus from this forum, but I’m maintaining and try to live up to your expectations, It’s a goal star to follow. May all your times be merry and the journey well met. Cheers for now, Gyps PS, Good job we blur the lines around here or I, for one, would have no where else to go! (for those spare moments when I need some positive, non judgemental place to vent) Ta, all xx
It’s interesting what you say about food’s changing and no longer being appealing. (Like with the Brumbys scroll SJ had), I’m beginning to feel like this with certain foods too. Do you think it’s just because we’re eating healthier/better on our fast days and learning to resist those temptations, that when we finally do eat it, its lost it’s “shine” so to speak? I know that on days when I can eat whatever I want I still seem to be making smarter choices.
Gypsy! what a lovely post. And such clear thoughts on healing pain.
Sarah – Apparently our tastebuds do change, it seems to be anecdotally recorded in various posts in the forum. However, because we know how our bodies feel in the fasted state (rested, unworked), I think when we eat or drink something that is too manufactured or chemically enhanced our bodies have a WTF moment.
GYPSY HOW LOVELY TO SEE YOU BACK ON AGAIN!!! All in caps & in a separate post so you’ll notice it. I was almost going to write a poem today in an attempt to woo you back on here again – or that you might have smelt it from afar! But thank goodness I didn’t cos there’s none write poems like you girl. Hang in there girl & keep on being helpless & needing assistance (LOL can’t imagine anyone less helpless than you Gyps) but do whatever works for your Leprechaun. suejen XXXX
PS don’t stay away so long.
Dawg I never used to get cold on FD’s and wondered what everyone was talking about. But man do I ever now that winter is here. I didn’t realise what it was until one evening I was complaining bitterly to OH about how damn cold it was, & he says well actually it’s a lot warmer tonight. Then…….I realised that it was a FD and it’s been the same for the last 3 or 4. So I rug up & try to stay active which helps the cause anyway. Usually wear a scarf inside the house which I’ve never done before. XX
Lotus had to laugh at our bodies having a WTF moment LOL And me too, came back home feeling totally full and bloated and not well. Interesting XX
Talk about your taste buds changing!! Sunday arvo my OH thought he’d take me out for afternoon tea as it was his last day of holidays. He took me to a newly opened Krispy Kreme Donut place, all I can say is eeeerrrrrrkkkkkk. Feel all jangly just thinking about it. Probably half of it was the type of donut and the other half was the ‘cream’ and ‘chocolate’ (which I managed to pick off like a shell) that was so awful. Been a long time between donuts and be an even longer time from here on. Two tastes that have changed for me are greasy foods and sugary foods – doesn’t even have to be sugar overload to taste too much.
Gyps, missed you. Bergers mate (remember old paint ad?) Keep on keeping on.
Up did you try the Thai coconut fish? Still only 145 cals per portion and it goes really well with cauli and cabbage or spinach. YY
Did sooooo enjoy my brewed coffee to day. Nothing like a decaff flat white made by an excellent Barista. Even went a bit futher and had x2 tim tams…..You can buy this little packet of bliss in a few places.
GYPS- so good to hear from…. have been thinking of you and the Leprechaun.
FIT- thank you for your continued thoughts for my Dad & me…. He is comfortable and holding his own with tenacity plus . There are good days too closely followed by the not so good. Keep having a wonderful time and enjoy “THE CITY OF LIGHTS” and its beautiful surrounds.
DAWG- I still feel cold on a FD and have done for thr past 7mths on 5:2. I am sure its a metabolic phase.
……..GO GALxxxxxx
Hi All!
Just a quick chance to post today while OH and I in cyber bar/cafe and he has work to print and send.
Lotus – delighted to hear about your success on the diabetes front…..brilliant results!
Gypsy – you are a gem of wisdom and words!
CG – glad you feel up to posting but you are in our thoughts no matter what and we are all behind you pushing up that hill to better and pain-free days ahead. Keep doing what you can and don’t stress over what can’t be done xxx
Milena – what an interesting life you lead; you must have some fantastic jewellery! My OH works from home and gets that same attitude from people too that he isn’t really working….so annoying!
Great to read all the other posts but gotta go now cos OH needs the computer back! Wecome, Sarah, another nurse – in good company with all the others on this thread. I’m from Ireland (not a nurse) but I know what you mean about the response I got when I first posted here; by far the most welcoming!! Just love all these gals here, they’re amazing!!
BTW – put on about 1.5 kg between the time OH left for France and when I arrived so I did a good FD yesterday. Will weigh in tomorrow; wish me luck!!!
Yes, Yum. It is my favourite! I like the curry one too.
Gypsy, nice to hear from you. Best wishes for tough times. Hope the news is good when it comes.
I haven’t noticed any temp differences on FD’s. Not only have my tastes changed though, so has my appetite. I can’t believe i have turned into a person who eats small servings! I grew up eating large portions and then having 3 sons, never stopped!
Welcome Sarah!
Ha,ha, suejen, don’t you blow my cover now… Why, I declare! There’s no way I could transplant that itsy bitsy thingy all by myself! U mob just get better with Age! and you are attracting likeminded comics! so glad the gourmet world has ‘lost it’s shine’ for you SarahMcK! We are shedding centuries of creamy do-nuts! Oo! Yummy! And I am still having WTF moments before and after meals, lotus! So CG’s brainwashing is a powerful force! UP, the jolly Roger! Carry on! I shall return. … just don’t distract me, I’m polishing my halo, I mean, do you all realise that cleaning walls is a convoluted experience requiring backup when it’s ripple iron?!!! … and bearing the grime of a hundred years…… my stars! only a man could come up with the invention of THE PRESSURE HOSE!…….
Just checking in. Sorry I don’t have time to read all the posts as much as I would like, but I did read yours Milena. We are all made so differently, and we know that it is always input versus output, but so much other stuff goes on in between.
I am very relaxed about my fasting days – I like to have muesli for breakfast, but have mine measured so that combined with the skim milk is no more than 100 calories. It is not much, but triggers off the metabolism for me. The type of muesli I eat as helped me lose and maintain weight in the past even in normal quantities. For lunch, I just have a boiled egg and carrot or celery sticks and tzatiki (sp) dip, or a small tub of yoghurt. For dinner I have salad or vegetables, which I love. I figure I have to have food I enjoy, or it would be harder to do, and I intend to keep doing it. It is more a maintenance thing for me than a weight loss thing, although I need to lose some weight.
Good night everyone.
Morning all. I’m already starting to learn I think. Yesterday I ate too much, went to the shops and brought a 1 litre chocolate custard for the family for dessert. Which is fine except I ate too much, went overboard with my hot chocolate and just general picking all day. So I went to bed and I could literally hear/feel my digestive system working overtime. My body had got used to smaller intake and last night was a bit of a shock. I felt terrible, bloated and guilty. It’s just not worth it. So I’ve learnt from that. I’m sure I’ll slip up occasionally, but really determined to be more mindful of what I put in my mouth and if I really want it.
CountryGal I like your idea of using tezeki dip as a salad dressing that’s an awesome idea certainly one I’ll use as I’ve been looking for a low cal dressing.
Hope you all have a good day! π
That has happened to me a couple of times too Sarah, my stomach loves being empty at times, so to overfill it I don’t feel so good π
Never thought of using tezeki dip as a dressing, although I like simple oil and vinegar on salads, I am not really into dairy dressings. It is a good lo cal dip though.
Hi team. SarahMck dont beat yourself up about overindulging. We have all done it and lived to regret it. It’s no big deal on the 5:2. Just a lesson that if we slip up one day we can rectify it the next. Yes we have quite a few nurses here. I’m one of them. I too worked in an oncology hospital. In theatre.
I’m an ex South African and we used the term fossicking too. I don’t confine it to seeking for semi precious stones etc. I often have a fossick in my wardrobe or fridge to see what I can unearth.
GG I’ve always felt the cold on FD even in the summer. Michael mentions it in his book that his dad complianed about it too. I just turn up the temp or add another layer of clothing. I also tell myself that the FD is working even if I’m not seeing any downward movement on the scales. I’ve hit the plateau too. Been on 67-68 Ks for a few months. I’m hoping that it will change when the warmer weather sets in. It’s a cold, windy and wet day here in Tassie. This arvo I’m going to cook up some 5:2 meals for the freezer. Not sure what yet.
Enjoy your day team.
XX Dawg
Morning Team really like some of your ideas for low cal eating CG. Some experimenting to come. I know that I do need to up my fibre so more vegies/fruit with my meals as the system’s not working so well lately. Doesn’t help the weight loss either.
Was thinking of doing a 4:3 to get me back into the 69’s but decided to go instead with just a low-cal day and plan my day on MFP to ensure that it will happen. I do really like my Mondays/Thursdays so will stick with what works for me.
Up YY is the thai coconut fish a Birds Eye meal? Have to look for it – sounds yummy.
Dawg was it I’ll put up the classic chilli recipe today – sorry forgot.
Have a great day all & maybe try some of CG’s suggestions, or add some of your own into your next post. I love learning tips/tricks form you all Have a great day. We all eat 5:2 but we all do it so differently!! suejen XXXX
Hi team!
I read a tip on my food coach app last week (Noom) that I have implemented with some success – take a photo of a healthy food/drink that you are going to have – save it as background on your phone or just keep it in a file / put up on the fridge to remind yourself. I took a photo of my water jug and glass at my work desk, and it works as a reminder for me each day to fill the water jug up… Really needed it to increase fluid intake (that are not yummy milky drinks)!!
Hi Suejen, yes it’s in their steamed fish range, two separate packs per box. Good flavour and great to put it with sauce over veg.
Serena and CG if you have some of the tzatiki (sp) on hand would you tell me the brand. I may be able to get the one you are referring to here in the West as the ones I’m looking at presently don’t seem very low cal to me.
Lotus if you can fit some fresh pears into your regime they are really good for getting things naturally moving and not over sweet, just right π YY xx
Morning all, it’s raining out and himself is happy evading projects with a good book. So since that’s a peaceful distraction (from stressing over looming chemo or worse) I thought I’d just drop in here again. Not to get hooked, mind! I have ‘stuff’ to do in the real world!
CG, you are still on my mind, so I’ll just chat and see what comes forth that you may need from me (that’s how my affliction works – and no, I probably can’t explain that – no matter – you know I’m a half loon half of the time -it’s a (my) granny thing).
So, I got what I needed from you in just a few lines of your post, re-focus! (and reading back I see that you have also been off-line dealing with your own s**t in private)We came back online same day, same wavelength. And I can certainly say it was timely for my state of mind re my personal goals. I was on the point of the ‘bugger-its’ (or the ‘w(h)ine, gobble, werks’). But with your timely, common sense revisions,You bring us back to the basics.(and I hope FB is listening) We do tend to complicate simple truths by wandering off the track. Home base refocus is , I think, a very important part of 5:2 success. Keep it simple. Simple works. Keep it CG! And maybe that’s what you need to deal with this post op mind warp, my friend.
Don’t lose sight of the basics. When you said ‘it’s lying down’ that bothers you, did you mean it hurts when you are in a supine position? or that it hurts GETTING into that position (flat on your back)? You have been shown the correct way to get into bed, I hope. Because it is very painful to do it the usual way (ie) DO NOT just sit on bed and lower yourself down, either by falling straight back, or twisting sideways and using elbows. Bringing your feet up from the floor in this manner is a direct strain to your op area and is a no,no! probably for life, or at least years until you have REALLY good abdo muscle support. So don’t lift the weight of both legs from a flat position, it’ll aggravate things. You need to do the side roll/elbow-push-up exit on all supine lifts (I know you know that). And you need to do the PLANE DIVE to get into bed. This involves facing the side of the bed (instead of backing up to it) and extending your arms to lower your body, belly downwards, onto the bed, while lifting your left leg backwards onto the bed, you will find your legs just carry through and it is one smooth movement. Rolling to whatever position is then easy and shouldn’t cause pain. Couches and deep, soft chairs can be a problem too. Do you have a sturdy walker you can use to lever yourself up? keep it close, even if it does make you feel pathetic! decorate it! put a carry bag on it. Use it to develop smooth confident walking (as apposed to hesitant hobbling). Try to keep rising/siting motions smooth and well supported by arms/handrails. Quick jerks, like freezing up mid-movement will jar and jerk setting off those electrical shocks. Also, when walking, good support shoes are a must, avoid halting, hobbling, steps. Warm up on the spot with knee highs and then step straight out, looking straight ahead for obstacles in the distance, rather than head bent focusing on the immediate ground.(think posture!) stay straight, taking the tortion off the spinal nerves and muscles. (head bent=shoulders hunched=lumbar curvature and pelvis offline! Streeetching those nerves!) Always attempt to avoid movement on cold muscles(think shrink!retraction/ Ouuch!)
As to lying flat; Always use a pillow that moulds your head inline with your body, rather than letting it flop or bend off line. Once again, over extension of the neck equals spinal cord tortion, and it goes down the line. Use extra pillows to support positional comfort.(and yes, under your knees, nursie!) go with your bends! and bent knees in bed is best! (any girl will tell ya’that!), Oo! crap! focus, dearie! um… oh yes, crap is relevant. Don’t get constipated from all those painkillers. rocks in your gut depressed against spinal nerves we have discussed previously. Waffle done. Just keep your brain on the goal and your body will follow through. You know the drill. xxxGyps
Thank YY, actually had two pears today π Although constipation is not my issue ( I think it was SJ who mentioned it). But yes, pears are supposed to be lower fructose so they are fruits I can have without blood glucose going up too much π Plus so yummy…
Gypsy – assignment for you (others welcome to chip in!)- do you have any suggestions for a badly frozen shoulder? Mine is, and almost an year now… physio etc does not really provide relief, don’t want to do cortisone injections. I am generally ok with the limited movement (it looks funny if I am in the gym and trying to lift things lol), but now wondering when, if ever, it will get sorted? the specialist (the shoulder doctor ?!) charged me a pretty penny to say that sorry it will take about 18 months and he can’t do anything about it!
On a side note – you are an amazing lady, and wealth of knowledge.
YY & Lotus yes twas me and I just went shopping but…forgot to look for pears. However did buy some tzatziki dip and am eating carrot sticks with it right now for some extra fibre. YY I’m in the west & I bought the Black Swan tzatziki – only 20 cals for 20 gr & that was enough for 10-12 carrot sticks. They did also have a skinny one but there was so little difference in the cals I didn’t bother with it. More flavour usually in the normal stuff & less additives/sugar.
Yes Gyps you are an amazing fount of knowledge. Sure you’ll have some advice for Lotus too though the timeframe is about what I’ve heard from others.
Cooking up a tasty chicken broccoli and candied cashew stirfry tonight with lots of vegies (low-cal version of cooking the cashews), so only 400 cals for the dish is pretty good. Looks like my day is going to come in at around 1103…..unless I fold this evening and add in a Jarrah hot choc! Or heaven forbid….anything more!! sj XX
Hope you’ve all had a good eating day & are making wise choices. If not there’s always t’morra!
