Thanks to so many who asked about the concert!
@onahealthyhigh, @snowflake56,@annemarilyn, @at, @lindasue,@debster251 and anyone else who I missed or who wondered.
It went oh so well! Of course, minor mistakes and glitches, but the weather turned out perfect! Everyone loved the concert, choices of music, and I got lots of compliments on my dress! (Or course, the choir and instrumentalists are all in polo shirts and slacks, so I stood out!) Yes, I did have that turtle sundae to celebrate! Now I have a few months off before I have to choose music and prepare for the Advent Concert that will be in November.
If you’re interested in seeing our bandshell where we perform, check out Facebook: Freeport Choral Society that shows some pics. One member just sent me a bunch of photos from last night that I need to post.
@awilson -that wine dragon is something. Many of us understand.
@lilacgranny – welcome. I’m a 69 year old granny of 5 granddaughters. I began 5:2 16 months ago at 193 lbs. and am down to 159 now. Maintaining pretty well. There is so much help and support here!
@sydwil2 – welcome to you too. I am a retired music educator who lives about 15 miles south of Monroe, WI just into Illinois. You’re in the right place for help.
Day 7, Mountaintop PA USA, FD
Started off the week with a solid FD including my protein waffle with berries and fruit, small snack of yogurt and another colorful dinner stirfry from the garden harvest. DH and I have been eating dinner salads with a small amount of protein, feta or blue cheese topping and balsamic vinegar and oil dressing. The stir fry is a hot salad.
Very rainy and dark all day. Missed my mountain trail morning hike. Lots of mosquitos drawing blood. Hoping for better tomorrow.
We are travelling to California at the end of the week to begin our 2017 Summer National Park Tour. Will start in San Francisco and travel to Yosemite, Crater Lake in Oregon, Olympic NP in Washington, stop in Seattle to visit with friends and family, and complete tour at Glacier NP in Montana. Our daughter and her DH and 4 grandchildren will enjoy the ride with DH and I. I’ve been in training for this energetic trip, which will include lots of hiking, for the last 3 1/2 years. Our beautiful country has so much to enjoy.
Looking forward to a busy week and lots of fresh low carb high fiber food. Early to bed.
2nd post
I’m running late today but the fast is going probably better than it should considering I skipped two fast days. Maybe a slight amount of hunger, some limited jitters, pretty much what I would expect after having so many deserts over eight days. My body was probably starting to shift back to craving the sugar.
I computed my weight is just under 13 stones. Doesn’t mean much to me. 🙂
I saw the idea weight page linked by @bigviking … hmmm I’m about 10kg to 12kg too heavy on all of them. However losing 10kg of fat would leave me with only about 5% to 8% body fat, probably not an idea weight. I’m thinking 12% to 15% range should be pretty much ideal. Low enough to show some muscle, high enough that if I got really sick I would be okay for a while.
Day 8, Norway, NFD
Yesterday was my thirds FD, and i think it went well. Didnt eat anything since the night before around 21:00 (9pm) until 15:15 on monday afternoon (3:15pm). I believe i ended up just below 500kcal in that one meal. Had a kitchen redecorating-project to help with… ended up with a headache afterwards and went to bed at 22:00(10pm). Woke up today and my plan is to do what some of you have suggested after an FD, not eat before 9am.
I had to try the scale though… my starting weight last monday was 94.4. Yesterday morning it was 92.5. Today it was 91.6 🙂
Looking forward to eat a late breakfast today…but no clue what to eat… at the office.
Day 7. Québec. Semi FD
Today was a “semi FD “. Explanation : my mind fasted and I started eating only around 7pm, witch is good. Plus, I cooked a vegetarian meal with vegetables, olive oil and tofu. Great ! But I was with my sisters, friends and family and I had baked a delicious strawberry and chocolate pie and I decided to eat some. I guess I went over my 500 calories but I’m happy and proud ofmyself anyways !
Day 8 | Sydney Australia | NFD
Struggling to get started with the fasting this week. An interrupted night’s sleep due to work didn’t help.
I think I might finish work at 5ish for a change today, hit the gym, have some vegetables for dinner tonight, and make a concerted effort to fast and exercise tomorrow.
Norway, FD
Thank you @onahealthyhigh
@maayyaa yay, another Norwegian in here! And approximately the same starting weight too! How tall are you, and what is your goal? Just curious 😉
The time is now 9am and I have not eaten i 12 hours, so only 24 hours to go. Still not hungry, I am drinking sparkling water to get hydrated and some salt, and I have had a coffee. I am postponing my first meal as long as I possibly can, and if I really don’t feel THAT hungry, I am considering just not eating anything. Are there draw backs to not eating the 500 kcal on FD? Does anyone know?
Day 8 UK NFD ok(ish) FD yesterday closer to 800 than 500 and that extra was due to silly things like a few dried apricots , a biscuit ! ,next week my goal is to get back to “clean ” >500 fasts .aiming for controlled day today good fast on Wednesday as I have a mini trip away on Thursday to celebrate OHs birthday so next Monday I plan to get serious 💪
@mari84 yeay fellow norwegian 😊
Actually im wondering the same in regards to eating less then 500kcal on FD.
Im short 😂, only 1.60, so my BMI was 36,8, now one week later its 35,7 😊
My goal is 60, im not a “skinny type”, so anything less then 60 i would look like a skeleton.
Day 8 NFD country West Australia.
Sorry been MIA for some days – sitting at the bedside of my mum ,who fell and broke her hip last week, for 3 days and all one night. Was a bit touch and go on the weekend but mum is doing better today.
All days since last post NFDs.
Hospital food not great for 5:2. I initially thought it would be good for doing some 2 day b2bs but stress, anxiety, boredom etc kicked in and so chocolate bars, chips, toasted sandwiches and pastries were consumed!
Hoping to get back on track tomorrow.
Haven’t kept up with posts since Wednesday but hope to soon.
@maayyaa Ok, I am 1.75. Started off at 93 kg (BMI 30.4) and my goal is 77 kg, which gives me a BMI of 25.1. I am not a skinny type either, I have a heavy viking body with broad shoulders and hips and would not be able to maintain a weight at 70, which calculators suggest to be ideal. My “match weight” was 79 the last time I did this, but now I am aiming at 77 to be closer to a healthy BMI. I really want to be healthy for my kids (two boys, 1 and 3 years old), I do not have a goal to look smashing i bikini 😉
Nice to have this forum of fellow fasters to come along on this journey toghether, I am very excited to see how fast (pun not intended) this will go. I hope to see results before Christmas, and hopefully reach my goal before next summer 🙂
Day 8, Wales, NFD
I don’t like the ups and downs of the scales so only weigh in once a month – I find it easier to just believe I’m losing weight, that way I don’t get distracted and disheartened by cruel scales…..so I won’t be reporting any weight loss progress until the end of this months challenge. I can however report that I feel well and healthy on the med type diet and my clothes are certainly fitting better.
Pocket Winos – I’m with you!
@lilymartin – hope your mum makes a good and speedy recovery.
Hello everyone day 8 Co Down NI 800 day
So cross with myself – yesterday I did the hard yards and had nothing except one cup of coffee and a miso soup until about 7pm and then after I had my crustless quiche – not sure what the trigger was maybe it was not resisting the chips/fries the others had (only a few won’t hurt) but suddenly lost it and ended up having a bag of crisps and 2 chocolate biscuits! Grrrr. i find it happens when I share my plan. I am better saying nothing and just getting on with it. Hoping I stick to the plan today and not much damage done. Oh well I can’t change yesterday so a reset and refocus today.
This pages to catch up on but hope everyone is well.
Day 8 – Scotland – FD
I don’t feel very well today. I must have eaten something bad yesterday, or maybe it was the wine (I am not used to it anymore…in fact, it’s the second time I drink alcohol since I stopped breastfeeding). Anyway, I must fast today as today I am having lunch with a friend in a lovely place and I am meeting another friend after dinner for a drink. The plan is to have some miso soup for lunch, and two portions of vegetable soup for dinner. Now time for another coffee (I only drink single espresso) and more water.
Day 8, Belfast, NFD
Yesterday’s FD went ok…it’s a bit quiet in work which can be difficult when fasting. Last night I did succumb to a wee slice of brown crusty bread with a couple of slices of banana. Hoping it won’t make too much of a difference.
I’m still planning on being a Pocket Wino this week…defo no booze until our trip to London on Saturday. And even then I’m hoping to take it easy 😉
Good luck everyone today!
Day 8, Rocky Mountains, US, NFD
Did not check in yesterday I think. Today I check in at 3:50 AM. Cannot sleep. Full moon!
NFD yesterday as well as today. Being a bit on a binge. Indulging too much. But it will pass. I have this happening about every 3 weeks. Have not really figured it out why.
Have a good day everyone! 😊😊😊
Day 8, Hampshire, UK – FD
My first FD in August, a bit of a late start but hoping to do it well.
I have gained a little due to being unwell/chest infection as I came off the diet for 10 days, I am not 70kg but no panic!!
I will aim for 68kg for august. @rahul1905 we are at similar starting weights and targets, it’ll be nice to see how we get on and compare!!
@debster251 thank you!! I have completed the spreadsheet too!!
Good luck all 🙂
Day 8 Netherlands FD
Back on it today!
Waved our guests off this morning and life can return to normal. No alcohol till Friday, two fasts and another 16:8 will hopefully undo some of the damage from last weekend. I gained 2 kilos, most of which I hope is water retention from carbs Nd alcohol but depressing anyway. Fingers crossed it will go as quickly as it appeared.
Good luck to any fellow fasters today
@xrox it will be good to share our progress with each other. I always struggle when I get close to 71kgs. This month has been challenging in spite of 4 FD’s. My weekends have been quite difficult. And I am back to being 72-73kgs which is so annoying. Felt quite low during my PMS and was restless, irritable and turned to food. I am following 4:3 and I hope to reach at least 69kgs this month. If I lose more that would be great. It will be 2 months on 13th since I started this diet.
2nd post
@pippet – welcome just one wee thing – the day of the challenge is always the day of the month no matter when you start. Keeps us all on the same page so to speak x
@lilymartin – I hope your mum continue to recover will – bit of a shock to everyone concerned.
So far so good – one coffee so far and a few glasses of water.
Day 8 – FIN – NFD
Successfully completing yesterday’s fast means that I now have 50 completed fasts under my belt since starting this journey in March. I came in at a little over 500 kcals (mfp suggests 508 kcals) with 2,9 l in liquids. I did also complete the second planking session, stretching the last elbow hold to a total of 5 minutes and 15 seconds. I must say that I’m feeling a little sore today (I also did an exercise for my arms). The ankle is also swollen again – Sunday morning almost all of the swelling was gone, but yesterday evening the swelling had again gotten to the point where it started cramping when doing my plantar flexion exercises.
Today I’ve eaten more or less the same I ate on Saturday – chocolate chia pudding (this time with strawberries and coconut flakes on top) and three cups of tea for breakfast, Italian vegetable soup (and cottage cheese) for lunch.
Plank challenge, today’s schedule:
1 min high plank / 30 sec elbow plank / 30 sec right foot raised / 30 sec left foot raised / 30 sec side plank left side / 30 sec side plank right side / 45 sec high plank / 1 min elbow plank
@bigviking – Those calculations seem to generally lead to figures in the middle of the healthy BMI range (at least for men). I don’t think you have to take the numbers as an absolute guideline. If I would, I’d currently have to gain weight instead of losing it. My suggestion would be to move forward with your weight loss until you’re satisfied with how you look & feel (as long as it’s within the healthy range).
Day 8, US, NFD
Hi Mari84. Sounds like you’re doing the FD correctly. I wouldn’t be too concerned if you’re really only fasting for 34 hours rather than 36. The great thing about this diet way of eating, is its flexibility. Keep track of your progress and if you think you’d get more benefit in stopping earlier, or postponing breakfast, then try that and see how you go. Of course, Maayya, you can eat 500 calories or less, whatever works for you. On my FDs, for example, I find it easier not to eat at all, and confine myself to coffee and water.
OH stands for “other half”, usually referring to a spouse, and OS is older son.
I’m with you, BelMc. What was it about yesterday that made the FD so hard!! Most of the time I can breeze through them; yesterday’s was a challenge. But we’re both through it and looking forward to the next.
Well done to those pocket winos who have resisted the call to Bacchus!
Day 8 – USA (Illinois) – FD
Debster – yes, that is I in the multi-colored dress that looks pink in the photos. Our drummer thought I needed to look bright, so I opted for that over the more plain skirt and shirt I had thought I would wear.
Norwegian members – many people here do a whole day just with liquids, well under the 500 calories with no ill effects. In my 16 months on 5:2 I believe I have only done one FD that way. I do identify with you because I’m 1/2 Swedish, also a bit of a Viking type, and content to maintain at roughly 72 kg. Also, we had a Norwegian exchange student gal back in 1998-99 who we still consider a daughter/sister. She’s from the west coast, Haugesund. We did get to her wedding and thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Norway.
Onward and downward!
@songbirdme
I’ve also been a cultural exchange student in usa for a year, 1997-98 😊 Love love love the family and Tucson AZ. My dream would be to move there for good 👍 I did a 2 week “diet” while there, consisted of (all you can eat) watermelon and starbucks icecream.
Weird enough it worked…. lol.. but not in the long run 😂
Half swedish is enough to be a Viking 👍👏
Day 8…..Florida……FD
Last day of my staycation, wow time flies when your not working…. Ugg!
So, yesterday the OH and I spent a couple hours in the garden. I got my seeds in for beans, leeks, peppers, cantaloupe, cukes. The OH prepared soil for transplanting that will take place in a couple weeks. I did end up with a little to much sun on my shoulder and some stiff joints but it’s done for the moment.
I was a bit willy nilly with the program this week, so very surprised when weigh in time came around, I stayed the same. I was really afraid, I was going to sneak back up into the 140’s!
I also had the opportunity to speak with my sister, she is loving here new eating plan aka IF. She’s been doing it a week now and she has noticed so far….. no acid belly attacks, she’s got acid reflux very badly that medication does not help. And she’s sleeping better! So, she’s still going strong!
With my worries last night, I did some light reading on 5:2 and intermittent fasting. Sometimes rereading the information, helps but I read this one article that I wanted to share with you all…. 3 biggest mistakes of IF
Please forgive me as it is just me paraphrasing
1. It’s working so we make changes both intentional and unintentional. Intentional is were we make adjustments thinking it will spread the process and unintentional we’re we become complacent and adding thing we don’t think will hurt.
2. Hunger is an indicator or keto adaptation, which we ignore. If we can do from meal a to meal b without hunger or side effects low blood sugar, dizziness etc., when it’s time for meal b we eat rather than allowing our bodies or belly to determine what time to eat. So if it’s time for meal b and you have no indication of hunger, it’s recommended to continue the fast until your body or belly tells you.
3. We neglect our veggies. Since our consumption of food is quite different, lower than most, we need veg to replenish all of the vitamins and minerals. Also veg is a helpful counterpart to rid our bodies of the build up from fat removal. Waste removal is key in IF because we eliminate the left over I just call it fat, that our bodies did not consume during the fasted state.
Very interesting little article…. I found it quite helpful.
Welcome to all the newbies…….
@ lilymartin….. prayers for your mum and you
@xrox….. glad your feeling better
@ coda…… don’t be to hard on yourself, everyone’s dragon gets the best of them sometimes. Here let me help you up, let’s get dusted off and get you back to your journey.
Okay, well I’m off
I was addicted to the hokey pokey then I turned myself around!
Interesting article about eggs for breakfast. Most all of us know that bread, carbs, sugars for breakfast doesn’t help our WOL, but still interesting to read:

Day 8 – USA – NFD
@lilymartin, I hope your mom recovers soon! (((cyberhugs)))
Day 8 – New Jersey – NFD
@debster251 Thank you! No wine until Saturday. I’m committed!
@califdreamer Thanks! Got it!
Down 1.8 pounds since the start of the challenge. 🙂
Day 8 –Albuquerque–FD
@debster251 –Thanks for reposting the spreadsheet. Today I’m going to remember to bookmark it.
@twinmam—I’ve told myself that Prosecco has no calories so many times that I’m starting to believe it.
@at—I’ll join you at planking today.
@bert1802— What a nice story about how your family has stayed together. My grandparents stayed together until Grandpa died but they never did anything alone together as far as I witnessed. That might be a generational thing. I’m afraid I don’t have too many other examples of good marriages. I think for some of us who grow up in chaos, we have to work very hard and make a conscious effort to be good partners. It’s not something we have in our implicit minds.
@hannahwatto —Congrats on your successful fast!
@maddyg—I hear you on the ambivalence about fasting. It feels powerful but also, well I still really like eating.
@snowflake56—Had seriously sore shoulder muscles from yoga and planking, so took yesterday off. Will go again today.
Mari84—How did it go yesterday?
@kokua12—Congrats to you, too!
@dykask—I’m not sure about some of those formulas either. According to Robinson, I’m supposed to weigh 126.5 lbs???? I have not seen that since I was about 14 years old.
@lilymartin—Sorry to hear about your mom. Hope she heals quickly. Hanging around hospitals is a great way to get sick(er).
@maayyaa—Tucson is where I grew up! Went back last summer for a HS reunion and it was so lovely but I had a lot of sad memories too, since my family is all gone now.
Day 8 California USA NFD
Still paying for this last weekend’s transgressions. Yesterday was a fast day at a little under 500 calories and I actually came it at .4 pound higher than yesterday. It may be water weight but I’ve had half a headache since yesterday that I can’t get rid of. Hopefully it will go away today.
Planning on watching what I eat today, even though it’s a NFD.
@lyonlottie – I see you’re right there with me in trying to undo all the weekend eating. Let’s hope we can get rid of that weight gain quickly, that it’s only temporary!
@poneill6 – Of course you can join! Welcome to the August challenge. @debster251 will add you to the spreadsheet when she sees your post. We’re keeping her busy this month with all the new members!
@jelly Bean – Welcome to the 5:2 forum and to the August Challenge!
