  • Day 3 – 2nd post

Include me on your pocket fast for Thurs eve through Sat morn:

    Pissupoosa
    B2tF
    Bert
    AnneMarilyn

    Day 4 second post:

Still don’t know where you are located PamelaV, but good background info.

Rocy65, so glad to see you. I had missed you. I really miss hearing about Anna6 from Gozo Malta as well. Northern Dawn isn’t here either. It’s funny how you get used to seeing different people but then suddenly you think ??where has that one got to?

Thank you all for the feedback on the quotes. Even though there have been really good ones on here today, and I was going to let them do the talking lol, can’t help myself with all that feedback (even that sounds like food. Hard to get away from it da dum!).

    Page 104 The Fast Diet:

“Simply note that the human brain is adept at persuading us that we’re hungry in almost all situations: when faced with feelings of deprivation or withdrawal or disappointment; when angry, sad, happy, neutral; when subject to advertising, social imperatives, sensory stimulation, reward, habit, the smell of freshly brewed coffee or baking bread or bacon cooking in the café up the road. Recognise now that these are often learnt reactions to external cues , most of them designed to part you from your cash”.

I made it through my first day. Hard but not unbearable. Thanks for all the posts they really help. I think I can do this. I have a lot of weight to lose! Any success stories of people who had a lot of lbs to lose?

    Day 4 – Melbourne Aus – FD
So this FD going much better than my first attempt mainly because I’m back at work which is an office job so I’m mostly sitting down. So managed to wait until 12pm before I had my first shake As that’s when my stomach started hurting and then went shopping through my lunch break. Double benefit of getting me moving and taking my mind of food. Also bought lovely tea dress in sale so can’t be bad. Think I’ll manage the fast days easier than non fast days actually. Yesterday was not good – ate a cake and a large chocolate bar! But it will take a bit of adjustment to retrain my head I think.

    Hi laddie10

In order to achieve ketosis takes longer than 1 day, when I followed a VLCD it took 3-4 days to achieve it so it’s possible if you control your carb intake on NFD as well but for me the benefit of this diet is not having to control everything I eat everyday. That’s where I have tripped up before, but everyone is different.

    Day 4 – Melbourne – FD

NFD was good yesterday, 2 meals only and stayed within bounds.

@b2f thanks for the link to The Case Against Sugar article.

And because we can never have too much of a good thing, here is a link to another good one along similar lines: http://thatsugarfilm.com/ = Excellent Doco by Damon Gameau, and a book as well. His experiment was scary, to say the least!

    Day 4 – FD – Sydney, Australia

Today’s fast is the easiest so far. Started off with a bullet proof coffee, which kept me going to lunch when I had a vege soup.

Bit headachey, but I think it’s stress rather than hunger/dehydration. I’m tempted to soothe feelings with food but I don’t think it will be worth it. I’ve only been doing 5:2 for 2 weeks and already lost a few centimetres on my waist, it feels great!

@biddiev yeah I was shocked at the extremes Damon went to but it was very helpful/motivating/scarring to see the film.

    Day 3 USA Hawaii NFD
16:8 just closed the 8 hour eating window – was open today 11am – 7pm.
Will fast 16 hours – water only till 11am.

Day 3 – FD – NY State, USA (currently on vacation in Western Mexico)

    Good evening,
    Fast day for me today:
    1:00 pm – 1 fried egg w/bacon
5:00 pm – small salad, steamed salmon, vegetables

    Good luck to everyone!

Day 4. NFD. Oman (the middle east).
Starting weight 1st Jan was 115kg. 118kg in October.

Yesterday was 2nd FD this week.Didn’t eat till 2pm which I find pretty easy. I did have some coffee with a dash of milk. Evenings are hard..prepping nice pasta dinner for OH and kids. I had egg with small pitta at 2pm and tuna with huge salad at 7. But this morning I’m down 2kg from 1st Jan. So I’m happy happy!

Great to hear from everyone. I’ve never done anything like this before and I think the support will really help.

Anyone else drink kefir? I find it really good for any tummy issues!

I’m so cross with myself my FD yesterday was great up until 8p.m last night an I pigged out on left over Xmas stuff why oh why do I do it when I’ve had a day which was fairly easy,
I’ve been reading all yr posts to Physce myself up for today, when I was successful in November I think I spent from mid October trying an failing before I got into the role of doing it as awol.
So Day 4 FD North Yorkshire

Day 3 – California, US – Fasting day – Post #2 (end of day)

It didn’t go as well as planned today. My first real fast day in a while and I caved around supper time and probably ate a NFD of calories in that one meal.

I’m giving myself credit for making it a 24 hour fast (supper to supper) but would have liked a full 36 hours instead. I did reach a point today where my body reminded me what hunger can be like – unpleasant but temporary, it went as fast as it came.

Good night and good blessings to everyone,

    – Stephanie

@s1u2e3 This happened to me today, I can totally relate. No answers right now, but I’m giving myself credit for all the things that went right today so I can get back up and try it again next time.

    Day 4 | India | FD

My “Bakasur” got better of me yesterday. I went way over 500. Hope it is better today.

    Day 4. Sussex, U.K.
    NFD.

    Day 4 – Staffordshire UK-nfd

Yesterday was ok. I also suffer from evening munchies so often go to bed really early on a fast day!

Oui! enfin, une franco-britannique qui habite en France. Courage!

https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive is the link if anyone is interested in seeing the spreadsheet.

Hi Cocobello. Is your post directed at the group, which seems to be a pretty happy crowd on the whole, or for PatJulien? I haven’t heard from PJ since before the challenge got off the ground on 1st January. I tried to communicate in French through the translate site, but don’t know if it was successful or not. I’m told those translations are pretty dodgy due to colloquialisms not translating well.

Day 4 UK NFD Very happy with yesterday’s FD – some days I can manage to go through to dinner on liquids but felt the strain yesterday at around 3 so had a small bowl of mushroom soup at just 80 cals and then a nice big beef & veg stir fry for dinner.

Fuvvie – I like the quotes but please don’t feel under pressure to produce, with the large numbers this month together with your very busy life I’m sure you have your work cut out for you

I am starting late but hoping I can still join! I am fasting today. Already a challenge

Aussie day 4 yesterdays FD went well they are getting easier.

Day 4 NFD – Summery Melbourne day , Aus.

Had a great day today, under TDEE! Walked over 12000 steps exploring the city and science works with my 3 munchkins. FD tomorrow and I’m ready for it!

Debster251 – Melbourne is a pretty special city. Loads to do and see.

Day 4, London (and my first day back into the regime)- FD.

Theoretically, fasting today should be easy, with all the post-Christmas lard sloshing around my system ;-). But more seriously, it probably won’t, as fasting is a habit that one gets into- or out of it, as it is now.

Kudos to the multiple days fasters; I am not there yet. What works for me (when I manage to stick with it) are the two separate fasting days per week, they work out at around 36 hours, but count as single day (i.e., dinner on day -1, fast on day 1, and then breakfast on day 2). Maybe, when I get comfortable with this over the next few months, I will then attempt a longer fast.

Still, very happy that I am not on a crazy January diet- you cannot open a newspaper, magazine or a news website without being bombarded with suggestions how to subject yourself to some mad diet (detox, etc.) that ends up making you feel cold, miserable and dejected- and not that much thinner, anyway. The liver, kidneys and skin do the detoxing, not the maple syrup with cayenne pepper or similar junk. OK, rant over.

What makes fasting easier in the cold weather for me is tea. I have got myself a few lovely teas- white tea with bergamot, Japanese genmaicha tea, assam tea with caramel- and have quite a few cups during the day, made in a nice Japanese-style tea-pot with its matching little cup. A little thing, I know, but it’s a chance to break the day and somehow, to be mindful- of making the tea, savouring the flavour, etc.

Hope everyone has a GOOD day.

    Day 4 – Queensland – NFD

    Morning!!
    Day 4 NFD – Surrey,UK
Yesterday’s FD went well – in the trickier moments the post by someone (sorry I can’t remember who) about all of the fasters holding hands around the world popped into my mind and helped so thank you for that 🙂
Only real issue I have is I sleep badly the night of a FD. Any tips?
Also I go back to work tomorrow for the first time after the Christmas break and am not sure how that will go. My working day is so structured around coffee breaks/lunch time etc. BUT the scales are definitely going in the right direction and my skirts fell a bit looser at my waist so hopefully that will keep me straight!
Anyway, for now up to the loft to try and find my A level certificates from a million years ago – long story.
Good luck to everyone on a FD today. Keep going – you will feel fab tomorrow.

Welcome pocket – w, just sign in with the day matching the date, not your day on the journey. i.e. even though you are only Day 1 for you, sign in as Day 4 on the 4th so it makes it easier for me to follow. Hope that is ok with you. Then put your location and then whether it is a fast day or a non fast day. Itmay help you to use the tracker which is on the top of the page on the right. It’s a great tool.

Thanks for your concern, BrightonBelle, but it is very helpful for me to look for these quotes, and I get a kick out of it. We now number 105 post-ers. It can be overwhelming for some, but it really does broaden the scope.

Just while I was writing this and submitting it, 3 more people wrote. I decided to edit it. I too like the thought of everyone around the world holding hands on a fast day but I also like the picketers. Writing the names on a list and putting it ones pocket certainly has worked for me the 2 times I did it. But I’m trying to do separate fast days to try and get NFDs under control and practise the idea of I can’t have it now, but I can tomorrow. I’ve never really taken that on board. Instant gratification is part of my life in many spheres and it is a habit I wish to break.

    DAY 4 – Bucks UK – NFD

FD yesterday went well – out most of the day which helped – so stir fry supper –
and green tea…drank loads of water as had bad headache – but survived. Optimistic that I can keep this up.

    Day 4 Belfast UK NFD

Forgot to our starting weight: 163.5lbs
    Day 1. NFD
    Day 2 NFD
    Day 3 FD

Hope this helps Furvie. You’ve got a full time job keeping track of us all and I love the quotes.
Had a successful first Fd, give or take 100 cals
70 lengths of the pool done first thing this morning although it was hard after 3 months away from the pool. I love my exercise!

@sheam – hope your leg pain is better

@ BiddieV and @b2f thank you for the links. Scary stuff like indeed!

@missymoomoo – I used kefir for a while to help my tum, but truthfully don’t really like the taste. How do you use it? I’d give it another go if I could find a way round that.

@madam of Mayhem – I spent three days in Melbourne in October – my cousin’s son lives in St Kilda. We drove the Gt Ocean Rd, did the red bus tour of the city, went to Brighton beach – my gran lived in Brighton UK, so I enjoyed the beach huts, and walked the city a bit. Lovely city but the weather wasn’t great when we were there. It was warmer here! Then we went to Sydney to stay with the cousin then cruised from Sydney north round to Fremantle. Spent a month in Australia altogether, lovely country altogether and we met lots of lovely people.

    Day 4 Cornwall UK FD

Good to be back on a fast day BUT finding it soooo hard! And its not 11am yet!!

Ive had teas and cider vinegar, but have a headache so gonna head for sparkling mineral water and head out for a walk.

    Great quotes Fuvvie, thankyou!

All the best to those on FD, onwards and down!!!

@animalhouse0200 I think it is generally accepted that LCHF makes fasting easier.

The problem I see is if you go very low carbs, it is pretty difficult to actually adhere too. In theory fasting is very easy, you just don’t eat but when you start counting grams of carbs and subtracting grams of fiber it can get complex. If that is easy for you then more power too you.

Where I live trying to go low carb is really going against the norm. While it is okay to ask for smaller portion of rice, if you don’t eat some rice or noodles it will probably be difficult to survive. Also when the average BMI is probably like 22 it is difficult convince people that carbs are making them fat. 🙂 However the Japanese diet is low sugar if you exclude deserts and baked good and it generally high in vegetables. (That includes a lot of things that most western people wouldn’t consider to be vegetables like seaweed.) So I guess it balances out.

Day 4– Colorado USA — NFD

An issue I keep seeing people mention often on here is: headaches. This can be quite common on Fast Days, especially when first starting out & new to intermittent fasting. Here’s some helpful info from Dr. Jason Fung:

“I GET DIZZY WHEN I FAST. WHAT CAN I DO?

Most likely, you’re becoming dehydrated. Preventing this requires both salt and water. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids. However, the low-salt intake on fasting days may cause some dizziness. Extra sea salt in broth or mineral water often helps alleviate the dizziness.

Another possibility is that your blood pressure is too low—particularly if you’re taking medications for hypertension. Speak to your physician about adjusting your medications.

I GET HEADACHES WHEN I FAST. WHAT CAN I DO?

As above, try increasing your salt intake. Headaches are quite common the first few times you try a fast. It is believed that they’re caused by the transition from a relatively high-salt diet to very low salt intake on fasting days. Headaches are usually temporary, and as you become accustomed to fasting, this problem often resolves itself. In the meantime, take some extra salt in the form of broth or mineral water.”

The entire article has excellent Fasting Tips re: feeling tired, headachy, constipated, etc.
    Check it out here! 😀

    2nd post…
Since the quotes seem popular, hope you all don’t mind another. I’m actually finding it helpful digging these up & re-reading them too!

Jason Fung’s Top 8 Intermittent Fasting tips

    1. Drink water: Start each morning with a full eight-ounce glass of water.
    2. Stay busy: It’ll keep your mind off food. It often helps to choose a busy day at work for a fast day.
    3. Drink coffee: Coffee is a mild appetite suppressant. Green tea, black tea, and bone broth may also help.
    4. Ride the waves: Hunger comes in wave; it is not continuous. When it hits, slowly drink a glass of water or a hot cup of coffee. Often by the time you’ve finished, your hunger will have passed.
    5. Don’t tell anybody you are fasting: Most people will try to discourage you, as they do not understand the benefits. A close-knit support group is often beneficial, but telling everybody you know is not a good idea.
    6. Give yourself one month: It takes time for your body to get used to fasting. The first few times you fast may be difficult, so be prepared. Don’t be discouraged. It will get easier.
    7. Follow a nutritious diet on non-fast days: Intermittent fasting is not an excuse to eat whatever you like. During non-fasting days, stick to a nutritious diet low in sugars and refined carbohydrates.
    8. Don’t’ binge: After fasting, pretend it never happened. Eat normally, as if you had never fasted.

The last and most important tip is to fit fasting into your own life! Do not limit yourself socially because you’re fasting. Arrange your fasting schedule so that it fits in with your lifestyle. There will be times during which it’s impossible to fast: vacation, holidays, weddings. Do not try to force fasting into these celebrations. These occasions are times to relax and enjoy. Afterwards, however, you can simply increase your fasting to compensate. Or just resume your regular fasting schedule. Adjust your fasting schedule to what makes sense for your lifestyle.

Rocy65 I’ve had to stop a fast once, I just couldn’t handle it. But right after that I became too sick to easily eat. Sometimes there is a reason the body fights against a fast and we don’t always know what it is.

One trick is you can do something to fatigue large muscles like hold yourself in a mid-squat with your knees bent but holding your butt off the ground. Hold as long a you can and you should really feel the lactic acid building up in the muscles. It can actually feel like your legs are burning. Then when you stop the lactic acid makes its way to the liver and will get converted to glucose in your blood. It can even out the blood glucose and possible reduce some hunger. If nothing else it puts your mind on something more immediate, the burning in your legs!

Keep in mind the hunger normally comes in waves, if you resist for a while it probably will level out a bit.

I feel for you. I’ve had rough fasts before and they aren’t fun.

Day 1′ fd , 55 years old from northern ireland

@debster251 if u dont like the taste u could try the kefir in a smoothie? Maybe even a green smoothie? Very virtuous! I think it is amazing.

    Day 4…… Florida…… FD

    Good Morning……. January Challengers!

Day 4 and It’s going to be a great day!

Evening snackers….. You know who you are….. try some gum! The only conclusion that I can come up with, in the evening hour attacks is that some of you might be missing the need to chew especially if you were not hungry. Gum, will help the need to chew with out actually taking on any calories.

Also….. based on what I’ve read…. some of you need to up your intake of water. Add a pinch of salt to helps with muscle aches and headaches. Please don’t make me worry about you all because your not drinking enough!
The rule of thumb is drink half of you body weight in water. Example, I’m 155lbs which means I need to drink 77.5oz of water daily!

Starting on my first b2b in the new year….. So, what on the menu for today!
1/2 a cucumber, 5 cherry tomatoes and 2tbsp of lite dressing for 75 calories and shrimp for dinner…. Yum!

Today, I will be on the clock and hopefully moving like I was yesterday at work….. On top of that I was actually on time for work yesterday! This being on time thing is getting better….. I did not go back even once to double check that I closed all the doors and I was too busy to even think about it! I may just break this after all!

    Well…. I must be off…..
    cheers!

@fuvvie: Thanks, but the link doesn’t work as it is not a sharing URL. I think if you right click you can generate a sharable link that we can access. It would be interesting to see the data.

@happymargo: The 8 points are so so so true! Especially no.2!

I’m on my 2nd FD today and am already getting right back into it!! Love this diet.

Hi,so try honey instead,or healthy raw food snacks.Vegetables are also, sweet.

    Fuvvie close to ACT
NFD berries and natural yogur and a slice of toast for breakfast. 60g grilled chicken and veggies and a nectarine for lunch. 100g salmon fillet, veggies and salad small amount of berries for dessert. Drank about 2 litres of water but headache is persisting. Might be influenced by getting back into an airconditioned workspace. Also having trouble sleeping. FD tomorrow so will try adding a smidge of salt to my water and see if it helps. Thanks for the advice. Good luck to all doing the long fast.

    Day 4 NFD
Starting day with a cup of coffee with cream and listening to Jason Stephenson on YouTube with some positive affirmations before I head off to work!

    Day 4 – Cumbria UK – NFD

FD yesterday went well although I did feel hungry in the evening but managed to distract myself sufficiently and drank some extra hot water. I broke yesterday’s fast day at 1100hrs today – went for a light brunch with the OH – a bit chilly out but a lovely sunny day.

My leg still hurts – it looks like it’s a hamstring injury and not my Baker’s cyst playing up……no long walks atm for me!

@back2thefuture – thanks for the link to “The Case Against Sugar” article and also @biddiev – thank you for sharing Damon Gameau’s excellent documentary and as you say it is rather scary and should make us all stop and think about how much hidden sugar is in processed food and to avoid it.
@southcroydonkate – so glad that my post about us all holding hands across the world helped you through your FD – it was something that came up in our December group and resonated with a lot of us and helped us see a FD through on many an occasion.
@happymargo – Loved your two posts- reminding us all on the importance of drinking plenty of water on FDs especially – in cold weather, hot water with lemon is brilliant or various teas – black/fruit/herbal for variety of tastes is also a godsend – obviously for those in the warmer climes a cold version is the ticket! Thank you also for sharing/reiterating Jason Fung’s Top 8 Intermittent Fasting tips.
@bert1802 – your posts always make me smile – I am not fasting today but will be holding your hand to help you through your day.

@fuvvie, @coda and @happymargo – I love the reminders from Dr Mosely and Dr Fung and any other inspirational quotes – they are great motivators, so keep them coming please…….
I will add my quote for today:- “The first step to getting anywhere is deciding you’re not willing to stay where you are”

Include me on the pocket fast for Thurs eve through Sat morn:

Day 4 // New Hampshire, USA // NFD

I made it through my first fast day yesterday, and it wasn’t too bad, actually. Other than my morning coffee and a zinc lozenge, I didn’t consume anything until dinner time. Dinner was two eggs scrambled, 2.5 cups of steamed broccoli florets, and about half an apple. I don’t think I actually made it to 500 calories, but that wasn’t intentional. I’ll need to put more thought into it in future.

This morning I cannot wait to devour one of the cream scones I made for my son yesterday (they’re his favorite food – funny kid). But, I don’t feel like I need to eat everything in sight, which is good. I wasn’t sure how hungry I would be.

I’ve also managed to lose about 3.5 lbs (1.6 kg) rather quickly which is, of course, very motivating! Hope everyone is having a great day! 🙂

    SW 225 lbs (102 kg) // CW 221.5 lbs (100 kg) // GW 199 lbs (90 kg)

Day 4 – USA – FD (2nd FD for week)

@animalhouse0200 – I have also been amping up the LCHF approach on the NFD – I don’t think it’a bad idea from a fat loss viewpoint – for me it is working! That said, I am slightly worried that it may be too aggressive for me in the long run and like other things I’ve tried there is the risk of ‘falling off’ the program entirely. Part of my motivation I am realizing is that I am afraid of eating too much because I worry I won’t stop…that is usually a pattern for me. I did just order a new meal planner/menu to help with ideas for NFDs because it is very weird for me to look for fats to eat all although- I am enjoying Peanut Butter! The organic PB runs around 4 carbs per 2 tbsp servicing (3 net cards). I read recently that PB is ‘like crack’ and laughed out loud totally agreeing. Love it.

For now, I am continuing with at least 2 FD per week and then 18:6 on my NFD and trying to watch the carbs at the same time. Let’s keep in touch on this topic – are you also doing some delay on your first meal of the day on NFD?

@backtothefuture – finding Dr. Fung and watching multiple YouTube videos including the BBC documentary on IF is what led me to the information on 5:2 and ultimately, how I found this site. I am in that early stage still of full emersion on the topic and find his way of explaining it all very easy to follow. On one of his videos, he shows some cool graphs that depict the drop in carb burning and increase fat burning after around 24 hours and (as a numbers person) I found it to be extremely motivating! Last night I came across Dr. Stephen Phinney’s research related to LCHF diets – he really talks a lot about the different forms of fat from seed oils vs plant and animal fats all of which will be very important to me when I reach the stage of maintenance and keeping a 70-15-15 (F,P,C) diet.

FD at work. This is my 4. fasting day from 28.12. and the first at work. I desided not to eat anything in the morning and had vegetable soup at lunch time. Surprisingly easy so far, hungry for a short while and I think I have been able to concentrate well. Outside it is -20 C, really cold. On NFD everything tastes good and I also enjoy the small everyday things more than before.

    @elsacotton

thanks for your reply – 3-4 days sounds accurate for me too. I have used the test trips to get a feel for how/when I start to burn fat over carbs and after 1 fast day and two 18:6 days (of LCHF) I was showing a moderate level of ketones which sounds like it matches your numbers as well. thanks! I agree – long term counting carbs plus FDs will be too much in the long run. For now, I am just trying to get a feel for what it takes to GET RESULTS! 🙂

    Day 4|NFD|Toronto

    Day 4/ Kent /Fast Day 2nd Post
fasted till 2pm then had a miso soup. Surprisingly satisfying at 22 calories. I have low energy and a headache though so I am taking it easy today. I know all the advice says that you should choose a busy day to fast but I don’t think that would work for me yet. I am going to cook the same meal for everyone at dinner – Teriyaki Salmon Parcels (243 cals). Need to save some calories for dessert – my weak spot – Trying to find a healthy recipe.
