Day 4, USA, Missouri Ozarks, FD
Hello all, third fast day in a row. Doing fine and feeling great ! Had my big salad last night and enjoyed every bite.
Lots of liquids, lots of exercise.
Wishing all well.

I am a 56 year old mother of 3 and grandmother of 4. I come from “skinny” people, so never would have imagined that I would struggle with weight issues as I have for the past 30 years. I never could get rid of the last few pounds of baby weight and by just gaining a pound a year, (which doesn’t sound too bad), realized that at 56 I was once again at my highest pre-delivery weight….but not pregnant. I have lost considerable weight in the past, but like many others, it didn’t stay off. When I learned of the 5:2 diet it struck me as something very doable, and I was very surprised to learn of all the medical studies in support of fasting. So, today is day 1, and I’m fasting and so far so good. I would like to join your group because I love a good challenge and know it helps to have a little support occasionally. My goal is to lose 40# and am anticipating the first 20 will come off easily and quickly….then will slow down and this is when I need to stick with it and not lose focus on the health benefit of fasting regardless of any weight loss.

@coda going for broke! An experiment really to see if I can get this waist size down. But if I’m truly honest, I’m craving sugar!
BTW Coda and Metatauta – I’m envious of your hens!
@jessyoursize – very well done on your milestone and what a tale you have to tell! Yes, I’m planking daily but struggling to increase the time – 30 secs elbow plank, 15 secs raising each leg, side plank, 30 secs each side and 45 secs full plank. (With a short rest in between each one I might add) I think my next goal is to join each individual one up.
@okeydokey – you’ve had your own mountain to climb for sure. When our elderly parents need us, we also need to look after ourselves, so I hope you overcome your hurdles to get your teeth finally fixed. Gas, as CalifDreamer says, is a good way to go if it is on offer. BTW, you mentioned DH and DS. How is Ford Prefect and BooperDooper doing?(Did I get that right?) I remember they were posting in the spring.
@ciren2 good luck with your results. By coming back to this forum you’ve already started to make a commitment. You can do this.
So my Fellow Fasters the are lots of positive vibes out there. We can do this!
@southernmom – welcome! I’m a 69 year old retired music teacher who lost 35 on 5:2 and have been on maintenance this whole year. Jump right on in! The water is fine! This is a marvelous, supportive group.

@okeydokey – wow I can’t even imagine, I’m glad you are cancer free now. Yes, I have actually taken garlic capsules before, though I don’t anymore since my regular diet already has so much garlic in it. For the most part I don’t do anything for my immune system other than take my daily vitamin, get a flu shot, and eat lots of garlic. I will on occasion (like when I know someone in the building had strep) take those EmerganC powder packs. Most people I work with know about my history and know I will come kick their butts if they come in with strep (or haunt them mercilessly if I catch it and die). I wish there was some kind of vaccine for strep though – like with the flu shot. Honestly my doctors haven’t been super worried about my immune system (my heart is always the main concern) and since it’s been 3 years (almost) since the last time it’s been dropping off. What would you recommend?
@debster251 Oh man! You are killing the plank challenge! By 30 seconds I am dying!! You’ve got this though! I don’t know if this might help you, but when I feel the burn is too much I (outloud) say “Be a bada$$ with a good a$$” (sorry for the cursing). It’s usually on the last rep for the last few seconds, and DH fell down from his plank laughing the first time I did it. It’s now our mantra when we want to give up. Point is, that by concentrating on saying that it forces me to breath through the pain, really any mantra will do 😄 .
Speaking of the plank challenge DH convinced me to join him in 2 other challenges the squat and pushup challenges. I agreed since I didn’t really have any other workout routine planned, and doing all the challenges combined right now takes about 10 min – even the last day’s challenge will only be 25 min, so it’s not like I’m killing myself.
If anyone is interested these are the ones I’m following:
Squat Challenge:

Hi Debster, my fall décor is actually mainly outdoors. I have a scarecrow man that I have been dragging out for decades. He is stuffed with WalMart bags(early on I did it with newspaper and that was a fine mess after getting rained on)… He wears denim overalls with a plaid flannel shirt -I look in thrift stores for fall plaids in a large size and buy them as they need replacing every couple of years. His head is a lighted plastic pumpkin and he wears one of my husband’s old cowboy hats. He has straw stuffed in his “arms” and “legs”. I put him on a wrought iron bench and surround him with pumpkins and mums and silk leaves and stuff. Have Fall wreaths on the barn, house and cabin, natural materials – Nothing glittery or scary !
I like fall decorating as it can last from Sept/Oct until Christmas goes up (which isn’t until December around here). Indoors I do a little but do not go overboard. A lighted twig tree with a garland of tiny fall leaves, different tablecloths, placemats, candles, etc. The Fireking dinnerware that belonged to my grandma is always used for Thanksgiving. A couple of throws with the autumn type colors. Glass apothecary jars filled with candycorn and other stuff I don’t like to eat.. haha…
Welcome Southernmom !
On the planks, I do two three minute elbow planks, one morning and night. I can feel the “burn” at about 2 1/2 minutes and it really is clenching when I finish. But it feels so good because I know it is working.
Also do about a hundred each (in sets of 25) of the wall pushups, counter pushups and tricep dips. Love those
@jessyoursize – you’ll be superwoman by the time you’ve finished! I’ll maybe give the squats a go but I don’t think I could do one push up!
@lindasue – you paint a wonderful picture. Halloween is a small affair here, but Christmas is another matter. It starts way too early. And your exercise routine is inspirational!
Day 4 Lancaster, PA FD
@califdreamer when I was about 13, the Dentist used nitrous oxide …. evidently it doesn’t work on me. I felt like I was in a dream and evidently I tried to keep talking during his procedure. I possibly pushed him and the assistant away. The surgical Orthodontist will use anesthesia. I have PTSD from an incident when I was about 9, of a Doctor refusing to use any novacaine or anesthetic strapped me down with 3 other helpers holding me down, while I screamed, as she stitched up my lip and gums. That lasted about 45 minutes. I have flash backs. It was an accident that wasn’t dental, the doctor didn’t beleive in anesthesia. I still have Claustophobia and phobia about people’s hands going towards my face. I will try to stop the Claustrophobia with hypnosis, maybe it will work. Thank-you for asking.✨
Day 4 – Norway NFD
I was off to a good start, but had Indian food with dessert yesterday evening! It was delicious though, and Ive been to the gym both yesterday and today, so I hope it didn
t do too much damage. Today was fine, healthy meals, salad for dinner and no snacking. Tomorrow is my FD, and I have an 11-hour shift at work (well I have two jobs and going to both of them) so hopefully I`ll be busy till dinner!
One problem I have on FDs is I can`t fall asleep and usually wake up really early in the morning the next day. Anyone here experiencing the same and have some good advice? I take melatonin and magnesium in the evening, and the melatonin at least seems to help a bit.
Day 4 – West Midlands, UK – NFD
NFD and then some … I had been so good planning all my food, and even leaving a little wriggle room for TDEE, but I forgot the spring roll in my planning, and then there was the chocolate bar :-O
Didn’t make it into the gym either, as we made it to the gym with my eldest daughter, only to discover she had forgotten her gym card. I have hit my steps target for the day, so that is a plus, and the damage is recoverable.
I must admit I am surprised so many of you seem to weigh yourselves daily, I weigh-in weekly, and my weight fluctuates wildly even so. I would go for monthly, but I go to WW with my hubby, so weekly it is.
Got to go sort out one of my furbabies
Laters
Day 4, NFD
Day 5, Reykjavik, FD
Very busy days at work. Have been exercising more this week and drinking more water. Everything is according to plan except for this stuborn headache in the evening and the light sensitivity. I have taken pills for it, which I usually never do, three night in row. Hope it will give in soon. Maybe my head is bursting with the fact I’ m doing a dry October! 🙂
During FD I eat nothing for breakfast and then a one big pear during lunchtime. I never knew a pear could taste this good and it keeps me afloat throughout the day at work. That’s me tomorrow 😉
Have just joined this forum, thanks for hosting @saffy420. I have entered my details in the spreadsheet.
I am a 53 yo wife and Mum of five who has struggled with my weight since having my children. Lose a little, gain a little more etc. I started my 5:2 journey about a month ago and have lost 1.5kgs, so feeling pretty good about that. My biggest issue is not drinking enough water. I am hoping that as the weather starts to warm up here in Queensland that it won’t be such a chore.
Good luck to all on this journey.
@mari84 Thanks for the tip on Fox for Ally McBeal. There are so many tv options I can’t keep up.
Day 5 country West Australia NFD
Thursdays are normally one of my FDs but my chef son has come home for a few days and I am enjoying lots of his home cooking including handmade doughnuts, breakfast burgers with scrambled eggs on sourdough with Vegemite and avocado – yum, ‘proper’ coffee brewed, homemade muesli, delicious main meals etc.
In foodie heaven!!
Even though it is healthy I am tempted to eat more than I should and am trying to be very mindful of portion sizes.
By the time I have planked, squatted, cleaned my house, gardened etc I should make a bit of headway into the calories consumed.
The numbers on MY Fitness Pal are looking somewhat scary at present!!!😅
Day 5 – UAE – FD (last day of 7 days b2b)
Today is my last day of 7 day b2b and it is going great.
Thank you @okeydokey, I am glade to hear that you are back to walking and the fast is going well. Well done and wishing all the best.
Day 5 -Ireland 🇮🇪 – FD
3rd of B2B2B
Good FD yesterday…except when a drop of red wine accidentally fell into my empty wine glass whilst sitting by the first roaring fire of the season 😉
No damage done, down a pound this morning.
Plank Challenge being done….
@jessyoursize…never did a side plank before, wow it burned this morning. Will keep on though, might even try the squat challenge too.
@okeydokey…OMG I know exactly how you feel. Never had problems with dentists until in 1999 my elderly dentist accidentally dropped utensils down my throat….oh I can’t go on, but I have severe flashbacks and huge claustrophobia now. I have found a dentist who uses Valium “twilight” sedation and it’s fantastic. I tell him to do whatever needs to be done and I get out 👍
Day 5, Newcastle UK, FD (Day 5 of 7 x 800 cal FDs to kickstart my month)
Yesterday was nearer 950 cals than 800 so I should call it a CD. Nevertheless, very happy with how I am handling this week and the scales showing another very small dip at 136.2lbs this morning.
I’m really enjoying playing Nurse to OH following his knee replacement; preparing his breakfast and lunch (which I am not having this week) and then sharing a lovely meal early evening. I had a huge success yesterday evening when I finally got him to eat a salmon fillet – marinaded in chilli, ginger and lime. Not only did he eat it, he enjoyed it 🙂 His recovery is going as expected and he’s doing all his exercises – which will make all the difference to his final result.
Welcome to more new challengers @southernmom, @aljomisaza – looking forward to getting to know you and sharing your journeys.
@cipher1971 – I am weighing daily this week to help myself get back on track after a 6 week absence from this forum. I totally need the daily accountability of posting and right now, daily weighing is helping me get through this week. As of Sunday I shall go back to weighing weekly after my 2nd FD of the week. It’s each to their own and whatever works goes. Some people like to weigh monthly and some not at all – preferring to use items of clothing and maybe the tape-measure as their check-step. This is one of the lovely aspects of this forum – we share our experiences, gleaning useful tips from one another.
Lovely blue sky out there – need to get back to work today (I do garden maintenance 10-12 hours a week) now that OH can be left for a few hours at a time.
Thank you to all my friends here. I am reading each and every post as it arrives on my phone and you are definitely helping keep me on track this week. All my best to you this sunny Thursday. Together we are stronger.
Day 6. London UK. NFD
I’m slowly losing weight but it’s secondary to the way this WOL changes your relationship with food. I never panic about not having enough to eat and I never beat myself up if I mess up. It’s a revelation after spending my whole life not having a normal relationship with food and not understanding how to be in control of my weight. Phew.
Strawberries and Cream – please let us know how your OH’s knee replacement goes. My OH is convinced he is going to need both of his done at some point, but you never hear people extolling the virtues of knee replacements like they do about new hips. What is that?
Hello day 5 from co down ni fd and sf
Welcome to @aljomisaza I hope you enjoy the October challenge.
I don’t enjoy the dentist but so grateful not to have had the horrific experiences that @okeydokey and @daffodil2010 have had.
Made my first pot of vegetable soup yesterday, a sure sign that summer is definitely over. As OH and 2 sons are off to watch NI v Germany tonight I’ll have some soup and close the kitchen.
Feeling a bit down today think my foot is getting to me. Just want it to be better and me back to walking normally. Probably normal feelings and I just have to be patient and let things take it’s course. I’ll just have to count my blessings and remember the story of the man who complained about having no shoes until he saw the man with no feet. Right, enough feeling sorry for myself. Thank you for letting me get that out xx
Day 5 Sicily NFD @lynned Talk about making fasting harder- we are pinned down in our apt on the Mediterranean by something called an MCS, which I never heard of before. It’s a cluster of thunderstorms that band together. I already had 1/2 of a chocolate that had more calories than my whole breakfast. If I’m not careful, my inner snack demon will take over. Feeling bad for Brits, Germans, and others only here for this week. At least we have a month.
Day 5 Wales FD
Red wine dragon went on the rampage last night! Today might be a tough FD. Considered changing FD to tomorrow but knowing me that would be a bad plan as I’d likely talk myself into skipping it, so I’m sticking with it……….but I so want toast!!! I’ll be depending on your posts to keep me going today.
Day 5/FD/Melbourne Australia
Very late post. Enjoying an early night following a very busy and physical day in the garden. Looking forward to catching up on posts before turning the lights out.
For those in the northern hemisphere hope you have a productive and happy day. Happiness is good for weight loss!
Day 5……Florida…..FD
Another FD for me, I did pretty well but ended up having leftover Chinese for dinner. Chinese always plays havoc with my weight. I have done very well with no sweets, honestly, it’s not as difficult as I thought it would be.
I guess, if I’m really thinking about it, I think we all think somethings are a lot harder than they are before we actually try them…… I actually thought this WOL was going to be hard but turned out to be the easiest thing I’ve ever done!
I’m very jealous of everyone decorating for the fall season. Somewhere in this house, I have a box of fall decorations as I declutter I hope to find it and put them up before the season is over. I haven’t decorated for fall in 10 years!
This is short this morning as I must water the garden……..
But before I go…Welcome to all the newbies!
I saw a little stiletto of a man, he’s on the loose, he’s on the loose carrying a can of fandango!
Day 5 Gozo Malta, nfd
I stepped on the scales this morning and I registered 0.7 kilo loss from last week. I’m 65.3 kilos today or 143.9 lbs. I’d like to be under 64 kilos hopefully this month. I’ll eat more carefully during cd or nfd. My bmi is below 25 so in a healthy range. Yesterday s fd ended closer to 900 calories than 800 calories.
I’ve reached my target end of October 2016 but gain two and a half kilos while maintaining and then last July we went on a cruise and I gained about three kilos more. I hope to reach my target weight and maintain successfully. I’m 56 years old and have three grown up daughters and a son of almost fifteen years. I have four grandchildren and I babysit almost every day.
Onwards and downwards have a great Thursday everyone
@emma Taylor – I agree with you. This WOL has changed my relationship to food. It is getting easier to make good decisions and have more of a long term perspective.
Also it is amazing at what can be done. I’m into my 13th month of 5:2, wow that is over 100 fast days. I had a few breaks typically less than a week but I also had about a half dozen times I fasted for 2, 3 days and once even for 7 days. It is amazing what we can do if we just stick at it. 🙂
My scales registered a loss of 900grams this morning!!! So happy about that, I’m 3 weeks in and that makes a total of 4kg.
I was always a size 8-10, and now I’m a size 16! I live in France and in the boutiques here this is the largest size, so I was terrified as my clothes were getting tight.
I am 53, had my son late at 38, and never really lost my belly, which just kept getting bigger and even more so after I stopped smoking 3 years ago. I was getting really fed up of people letting me jump the supermarket queue or offering me their seat on the bus because they thought I was pregnant!
Now I’m doing something about it and it feels great.
I am just starting on the 5:2 since yesterday, was just counting calories before, so am very new to this, am fasting today. 19 kg more to lose, want to go from my original 83 to 60.
Reading all the success stories and encouraging comments is great, puts a bit of fun and spice into the losing weight experience, and we all need that!
Thank!
@lilimar – welcome. I hope you enjoy being part of the October challenge and the accountability it can add.
@lilimar – I have added you to the spread sheet here is the link
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oHFqnmdzVCzauz5eJOzqQfuHywXgRwErhMyTS3MSHog/edit#gid=621227425
Maybe someone with the techie knowledge could sort the spread sheet alphabetically – I don’t want to mess it up. Thanks
Day 5 – USA (Illinois) -NFD (CD!)
I need to make today a good Controlled Day (CD) after having a huge box of popcorn last night. The day after eating popcorn always has water weight gain, I know, so not really worried about being 2.5 pounds heavier this morning!
@strawberriesandcream – yeah for your OH enjoying salmon! Mine really enjoys this old South Beach Diet recipe: https://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=697962 I always add a few ingredients to the spinach mixture and often wrap it in foil as it bakes. Mine always takes more like 20 minutes to bake. Additions: grated Parmesan cheese, mushrooms, extra pesto. Make sure to salt the filet before you stuff it too.
@lilimar – welcome from me too. You will find this a terrific group for support and camaraderie.
Onward and downward!
Day 5, US, NFD
OMG, Okeydokey, your dentist experience is horrid. Hard to believe such terrible malpractice can occur in these “enlightened” times.
Went out to dinner last night and my OH ordered key lime pie. I asked the waitress for an extra spoon so I could dip into his, and my OH reminded me “no”. Which was really helpful, as I was able to resist dessert completely (tho I do love key lime pie).
That kinda makes up for the bottle of wine we shared and the two large serves of post-dinner cointreau….
Day 5, London, UK, FD (3rd of B2B2B)
Crazy busy at work this morning, still trying to catch-up with posts.
A Huge welcome to all the newbies!!! You’ll love it here. We’re hosted this month by @saffy420 who has included as post No 2 on page 1 a fantastic introduction and welcome explaining how to post so that we’re all on the same page………..Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!
@mogaman, I have a suggestion for where you DH can put that tube of pringles ……………………………. but he won’t like it!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking forward to breaking my fast at 4pm (19hrs) with some yoghurt & blueberries, then yoga after work and spag-bol with slim pasta for dinner tonight (by 8pm) to take me to 515 cals!!!
Thought I might mention my superwoman mother, who never has any sedation or anaesthesia of any kind at the dentist as she hates that numb, droopy lip feeling!!! On her last visit for a root canal the dentist had to persuade her & refused to do it unless he could numb the area – the thought alone makes my blood run cold!!!
Stay strong everyone, We have sooooo got this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
