  • Good morning! This is my Day 2 Fast! Had 1 egg omelet with peppers/onions/mushrooms. No oil/butter. I plan to skip lunch (as I day on Day 1 Fast) and then have remaining calories for dinner.

I have a question about breakfast/no breakfast. Do you have opinions and/or evidence that on Fast Days it would be better to skip breakfast and/or lunch and just have the one evening meal? There would mean more fasting hours between the evening before and the meal on Fast Day, so it would seem this would be more beneficial, but maybe not??? Also, I understand that it may be just a personal preference and have no bearing on more weight loss or less. I’m curious and would be willing to skip breakfast on future fast days if there’s a good reason to do so.

Welcome Tigon! You’re just one state over from me! I’m in Kentucky–Bowling Green to be exact, which is an hour north of Nashville, Tennessee.

Milena — I got such a kick from your market meltdown story! (confession: I had to google courgette — ahhhhh, a zucchini!) You broke a zucchini in half! And then you stamped on it! No wonder you frightened the veggies! I would think it sent a powerful message to the husband, as well — after all, it was a long, hard courgette/zucchini you violated and not a soft, round tomato! And that’s all I want to say on THAT subject!

Also a note to Milena re “hula hoops”. I know what you mean about today’s fancy hula hoops with the magnets, weights, etc. But the other day I was in a “Dollar” type discount store — the kind where everything inside is $1. They had the old-fashioned hula hoops – – colorful plastic rings exactly like the kind I had when I was a child. And they were $1. Do you have those kinds of stores there?

Sending happy, successful vibes to all today!

    Pam

    Hi All

On TV this Morning they were showing 2 people trying 5:2 diet. I won’t spoil it by telling you the outcome but I will tell you that the doctor recommended 1500 calories on NFD’s and I’m pretty sure they were counting……

The first video is on the link and if you scroll down the page you will find another link – something like how did they do.

    Let me know your thoughts

    http://www.itv.com/thismorning

Pam I think your answer was on there also.

We have £1 shops so more expensive than yours, but still cheap and very popular.

I’m fasting today, but I have just had a little melon and I will have my meal tonight.

    Ginette

Good morning all. Thanks so much for kind welcome and encouragement. I will look for that book as I am an avid reader generally and have a few on the C topic. I had heard of the jar salad concept and had even bought some pretty jars [with great intentions] so am inspired to dust them off! Re hula hoops, the thing I recall is heavy is good {can’t believe the irony there!!!} — they work much better, so the cheap light plastic kind are much harder to use….I had tried one and flailed about in frustration:(….. no idea about magnets though! I’d hate to see you suddenly flying through the air to stick to a passing plane;). Up for boot camp at 445?! Wow is all I can say! I did a boot camp when I turned 50 but was lighter and stronger then ….but even that was after work, not a morning exerciser unless it’s gentle.
Gearing up for a 500 day tomorrow, and plan to measure and record all the squishy bits today as I didn’t last week… AAAK.

    Good evening ladies..
Another NFD for me.. I was out for dinner and will do so again tomorrow, so I will try to fast on Friday. It’s funny, although eating out is nice on occasion, when you are doing it often, it loses its allure and you just want to have a nice home-cooked meal.

Milena, in answer, no.. I have not gone back to the gym yet. I had frozen my membership when I traveled and will start again after I come back from my business trip next Sunday. I have to say, I am not looking forward to re-starting, but I know that once I do I will feel good.

Lori, really? bootcamp at 4:45? You are certainly a better man than I

Pamela.. well done.. you are on your way. The answer to your question regarding breakfast is that the longer the time you don’t ingest food the better, so if you ca, skip breakfast and lunch and just have dinner. Give your body the time to ‘feel’ the fast.. that is what activates the stress response that is so beneficial apparently.

I remember the hoola hoops.. I was good at them then. I think they would be great exercise, but I would be a little self conscious.

Hi Salma, we can be cyber gym buddies, never thought I would evercwrite that!!

I’ve bid on two hula, or is it hoola, hoops, as OH thought it might be good exercise for him. Believe me, I would pay good money to see my man gyrating around the garden, so I’m buying him one!

Forgot to say, because he has NO rhythm – should be a laugh!

Appliepie, if it works will send you one too.

Hi Ginette: Thanks for the link – but I can’t see the video here in the states. I tried a couple of different ways and am blocked.

Hi Salma: Good information about breakfast/lunch – and sort of what I figured. Next fast day — that is, next Monday, I think I’ll try that.

I was just at butcher shop waiting to order a chicken breast for tonight. The woman in front of me had asked for a “sample” of a Lebanon bologna. The kind butcher obliged and sliced off several thin bits and then seeing me stand there, offered one to me, too. I popped it in my mouth without even thinking! Then it was too late! It tasted delicious! I checked “myfitnesspal” app and for the amount I ate, my guess is 35 calories. Not TOO bad, but would have rather saved those 35cals for tonight and could have contributed toward a glass of wine! Oh well. Note to self: Be more mindful before just popping any old thing into mouth!

Well, no…….boot camp is at 5:45AM. I get up about 4:15 so I can have a cup of coffee and get myself awake by the time I leave for the studio at 5:30. Some people literally roll out of bed and into their cars and arrive at the studio 10 minutes after they woke up! I cannot do that. I go to bed around 9PM, so I think I get plenty of sleep. I love mornings….my favorite time of day. Sun is coming up, birds are chirping…lovely. Of course in the winter, things are much different. 🙁

    Hi Phoebe

Measuring, especially the first time is daunting. The truth always is, look on it this way – this is your starting point and it is an important one. We all know how much we weigh and sometimes that is daunting, it is important as it will later help you know how far you have come.

I measured bust, tummy (oh dear), hips, arms and legs top and calf. It also says to measure your neck. This I did but I am sure this will shrink in time.

I have lost inches around my bust, tummy, hips, arms, legs top and calf. Neck I shall check much later. Other places I have noticed are wrist as my watch now swings, my feet……I put a pair of new shoes on which I had tried on before but now they are too big. I must wear them soon as I can probably just get away with them.

Someone said yesterday that my shoulders looked narrow, first real comment I have had. My son who isn’t known for his compliments tells me I have lost weight as he can see it. Normally I always believe this, but it is the fact that he was so worried about me that I think he would say this to encourage me. Kind I know.

Hopefully the squishy bits will melt away.

Pam I’m sorry you can’t see the video. I will look out for it on you tube as it might turn up there. It is easy to pick things up without thinking at first. You will soon get used to the fact that you can’t.

    Hi Milena

I hope you get that hila hoop. It is meant to be really good exercise. Will be interesting to see hubby doing it.

    Lori

I can’t believe you have to get up so early. I am most definetly a night person 2/3am is about my normal time to sleep. I will get an awful shock on Friday when I have to leave the house at 6.15 am. I really am not looking forward to it.

    Ginette

    Aren’t supermarkets underhand?????

Sainsburys are selling l’oreal (sp?) elvive shampoo and conditioners £2 a bottle,I should have shares in that company, the amount I use! Always buy a couple of dozen bottles when its on offer, got some today – had noticed last month when buying from waitrose – £2 also, but they were selling smaller bottles as well.

Tonight there was a advert for ASDA, £1.87, I started moaning until OH, who I now admit must listen to my ramblings, called out 250ml, so I checked.

    Sainsburys, £2 for 400ml, 50p per 100 ml.

    ASD £1.87 for 250 75p per 100 ml.

On how many things are they robbing us by reducing the size, I wonder?

    Hate shopping in ASDA anyway!!!

Pamela – have you tried Zenmate? Free download, set your location to UK.

Or download popular TV shows / films via Pirate Bay or similar torrent sites.

    Hi Milena

They are but have you noticed many things have changed the size this comes often form manufacturers. Cadburys chocolate used to be 120gm and now 100gm. Many other things like this. I think it is a good thing for foods that are considered treats – unless of course you but two lots to compensate. But shampoos??!

I do like Asda but also shop in Aldi and occasionally Lidl. Really occasionally Morrison’s and Tescos and hardly ever any of the rest. Our sainsburys was a few miles away as it waitrose. They now have one locally but it is difficult to get to.

My dad used victor values. Oh so long ago, I remember going there as a child and we always have Viennese chocolate covered wafers as a treat for the weekend. About two or three times a year we would have a bottle of fizzy drink. One reason that I hardly ever drink it now. The last time was a can of lilt 2 years ago.

Apple pie do you use Zenmate on iPad? I have now downloaded the app as it may be good when I am in France. A bit worried that it may intefere with other things though. If I am at home in France I have a satellite dish so no problems. But sometimes I stay elsewhere and it would be nice to get English TV there.

I see that there is a premium version, do you have to pay for some things?

    Ginette

    Good Morning all!

One of my favorite foods, Oikos Greek yogurt, used to be in a 6 oz. cup and is now only 5.3 oz. I’m quite sure the price is the same or maybe even more! At least it’s a few less calories per cup!

Had a leisurely morning of sipping coffee & chatting with the husband. It was an off day from boot camp, so no rushing around. I was hoping to sleep in a bit, but my furry alarm clock had other ideas and woke me up at 4:30. She’s a sweet cat, but I wish she wouldn’t be such an early riser EVERY day! 😉

Hope you all have a fabulous day!

    Good morning everyone,
Well Tuesday (1st fast day) went great. I sailed through until about 6:00 p.m. and then hubs and I ate the jar salad that I shared with everyone. REALLY seemed to hit the spot and I managed to just drink lots of water after that and then go to bed. I did NOT sleep well at all. I felt like I had taken something or drank coffee right before bed. I maybe slept 2 hours. Has that ever happened to anyone fasting? Anyway, yesterday I ate too much (including some cookies that I’d made this past weekend). 🙁 They are all gone now. Today is another fast day. Wish me luck! Getting ready to jump on the treadmill and get that over with. I have lots of errands to run today so hopefully that will keep me busy! I hope everyone has a GREAT day. 🙂

Good afternoon (at least here in KY):
Apple Pie: I haven’t tried Zenmate, but will look into it! Thanks!

I had my 2nd Fast Day yesterday and it went well. I had breakfast, skipped lunch, then had a “Spicy Thai Chicken Breast over greens” for dinner. It was filling and very tasty–I was actually craving something spicy and it hit the spot.

Again, I’m surprised about not waking up extremely hungry on the day after a fast. Does it have to do with the stomach shrinking somewhat on fast days? Oh, well, it’s a pleasant surprise. I’m going out to dinner tonight with husband and friends and am looking forward to it – though not in an “I’m going to go crazy and eat whatever I want” sort of way. I plan to practice mindful eating. (The word “practice” is key here.) Has anyone read the book “Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life” by Thich Nhat Hanh? I started it and then stopped it a year or so ago, but I’m going to pick it back up again and read it now.

I hope everyone is doing well! All that boot camp talk made me tired!

    Pam

    Hi Lori

Yes they have a mind of their own. I don’t allow mine in the bedroom. I used to my other two but kittens can be hectic and they got used to not being allowed. I have one that is a wallpaper tearer and he has done it to the passage and living room which I hope to redecorate this year, I can’t cope with the bedroom as well.

I also hope to do my kitchen, but finances have to allow for all these things and if it has to wait until next year it has to.

    Hi Tigon

I have a problem sleeping generally in fact really unusually for me I shall be going to bed soon as I have to be up at about 5.15 am. Not a time that I usually see!

Oh biscuits are too easy to eat…..I don’t have them in the house.

Well done for completing your first fast day, you sound as if you found it ok. This is always helpful.

    Hi Pam

Spicy chicken is one of my favourites on fast day. It is something I really look forward to.

Yes I thought it strange that I didn’t wake up hungry on my first one.

I have just finished a b2b fast I prefer to have a day in between but with food not in my control tomorrow I chose to do another fast today. Tomorrow I can relax.

Well I’m off to bed now, let’s hope I sleep earlier than usual

    Night All

    Ginette

Just to let you all know that I won’t be on the forum until tomorrow evening as I have a long day out.

Hi Ginette, I don’t have an ipad so I don’t know how Zenmate works with that. I have not paid for the premium upgrade, the free version works just fine for me. I use that if I want to watch live TV, which isn’t often, but I did enjoy election night. Or the torrent sites for downloading tv programmes (without adverts!) or films.

    Hi guys..

Well done Pamela, Tigon and Phoebe.. you guys will be old hands at this soon. Great to have you onboard.
Applepie, thanks of rthe tip about Zenmate. I will try it out. I do miss British programming although I too do not watch a lot of TV. I do subscribe to a cable provider who is supposed to get us the BBC, but we only get BBC World and BBC Entertainment. I will try Zenmate.. I assume it works on the IPad?

Ginette.. I do hope you got up in time to go on your trip as I know you are a night owl and not an early riser. Enjoy!

Milena.. I am sooooo jealous! 168 pounds! I am still struggling at between 193 and 195.5. Up, down,up, down, up, down. At least I am not gaining, eh? You’ve got to look at the silver lining. I am sure I will get into gear soon and start losing again, but life is really getting in the way recently. My life has been full of family and people coming and going and wanting to converse over dinner and wine. Sounds wonderful, which it is, but not so much for the weight loss goal. I expect June will be better.

Hey.. has anyone noticed how many 5’s are in today’s date? 5 is my favourite number. 15.05.15.. very symmetrical. Just thought I would bring it up for no obvious reason 🙂

Have a great day today and keep the faith (I am trying to).

    Hello All!

Friday at last! Weigh in for me too and another week with no loss. Really wasn’t expecting one as I am still eating too much on non-fast days. I don’t usually plan a fast day for Friday, but I am today as the husband is going out of town for the weekend so there will be no dinner out tonight(we went out last night). If nothing else, this plan keeps me from gaining, so there’s something to be said for that. This week I feel like I’m smaller across my shoulders, but thicker thru the middle?? Weird!

A quiet evening tonight and then tomorrow I have a memorial service to attend for a friend’s husband. He had been ill for a long time, but it’s still hard.

Sunday I’ll be playing golf with my friends. Lots of exercise and I’ll try to keep the calories in check!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

    You and me both Lori.
I think we both have dug our heels in for the moment, but we will soon be on our way. I keep fluctuating around a set point. It is easy to get discouraged, but to be honest, I have been also messing up and going out for dinner where it is not so easy to stick to a set amount &/or calories. I keep telling myself this is for the long haul so as to keep myself from chucking it all overboard.

Hello Ladies, l’ve been sitting here reading many of your posts for the about an hour and I have to say you have inspired me to start this diet, which I will tomorrow after the book arrives. Like most of you I’m perimenopausal, 52 and pretty active but really struggling to stay at a good weight. I don’t have too much to lose around 11lbs would be great but I’ve been trying for over a year and nothing seems to budge it. I’m finding it hard to reduce my intake at any time and hope this diet will help me achieve that. I never struggled this much in the past to lose weight but thinking about it now it’s only ever been short term, once I feel good about myself my bad eating habits return and so the weight. This time with the 5:2 diet it will be different. Good luck to everyone. I’m looking forward to posting my progress, if that’t the case of course!

Good morning all and welcome Beelsy! I have been going for a week and a half with 3 500 days so far and results are encouraging….. I know it’s partly water at first but water still makes it tougher to do up the pants! Yesterday was a fast day and after planning breakfast and dinner I absentmindedly put my hand into a bag of dried cherries in cupboard and several were down the hatch before I remembered “ooooh nooooooo” !! Goes to show how that mindless snacking on little bits here and there happens, so this is increasing my awareness. Thanks Ginette for measurement support. Never measured my neck before…… but dutifully recorded it all [after a sigh] and will look forward to revisiting in a month and if anything it strengthened my resolve and explained why spring clothes so damn tight. And Applepie I can’t thank you enough for C-word referral. Do not have book yet but discovered her achingly poignant and often hilariously irreverent addictive blog called Alright Tit. I could really relate, though my side effects were luckily far less. Apparently her movie was aired on BBC1 early May but I can’t get it here. So sorry about your friend Lori. A long weekend here– yes we celebrate your dearly departed Queen – out to the lake [no internet there] and will put in kayak and ride bike etc. Have a good weekend everyone.

Phoebe, you can see it! We watched it here in Spain just the other day. Download the torrent from thepiratebay dot se (have to write it like that just in case) or use Zenmate to watch it on BBC player. It was a brilliant program.

If you have any trouble email me, see my profile.

    Hi everyone,
Second fast day down yesterday. I survived my first week. I made Friday my “weigh day”. I was down 4 lbs. I’m sure it’s mostly water, but still motivating! I really admire you guys who manage to do 3 days a week. Not sure I’m ready for that yet. I love reading about your experiences. Thanks for the motivation.

    Yaaaaay Tlgon.. so well done!
Welcome Beelsey.. glad to see you joining the fun.
    Good morning to everyone.

Congratulations Tigon on a fabulous Week 1!! On to Week 2!

I actually managed to lose a pound this week. It’s a miracle! I got a 2nd fast day in yesterday, so that certainly helped. If I can just keep the scale moving slowly down, I’ll be happy. So far, since January, fasting has helped me maintain, but not really lose. Although, my body composition has changed. Whatever, I feel good where I am, but I’ll keep working on getting that scale number to drop!

    Have a great weekend!

Thanks Applepie. I will w Ai until somebody here try’s it. I don’t need it yet.

    Hi Salma

Yes I got 3 1/2 hours sleep to get up at 5am. I went to bed really early (for me) as well. It was such a long day lots of travelling and from once place to another. I got 12hrs sleep last night from total exhaustion!!

The meal was delicious. It was Michelin Star. The presentation was wonderful, the portions were really small, everything in the middle of the plate. But a fantastic eating experience.

Don’t worry about Milena being ahead of you. I am at 242lbs so that might make to feel better. It is all relevant about what we were. I am pleased with my loss.

I weighed yesterday morning and I weighed this morning and I have gained 2lbs. I initially had lost weight. I will weigh tomorrow to log my weight as I know how foot in transit can have an effect.

    Hi Lori

I am sorry about your lack of loss and I think you are probably right about non fast days. Many people don’t realise that you have to eat healthily on NFD’s. Michael Mosley said we can eat normally of NFD’s the only problem with this is a lot of people’s normal is what made the overweight in the first place. I would say we have to eat healthily but can occasionally have a treat.

I do hope this changes for you soon.

The one thing that you have forgotten is the health benefits you are getting from fasting, even though you are not losing weight. Are you clothes looser, is your skin better? The benefits inside our body we can’t see so they are hard to monitor. I had a blood test 10days ago and I will post results here. I have never kept check of anything apart from my cholesterol, blood pressure and weight. So it will be interesting to see the rest and know what they mean.

Salma the same goes for you. Can you get your bloods taken of do you have to pay? Here in England these things are free, we are lucky. A lot of people say how bad out NHS service is, I personally haven’t experienced that, I do know people who have though.

Memorial service are hard I know but think how many people will be coming together to celebrate his life. At my Mums I had the Blu Danube going in and the Tango coming out. I was celebrating everything that she loved and it made people smile, yes sometimes though tears as well but how much better that some of the heart tugging songs I sometimes here at funerals.

I have dicided to leave some instructions for mine, I’m not thinking of going anywhere yet…….. But want people to feel some laughter as well.

    Hi Beesly

How nice to see a new face. Welcome to the thread.

On my own thread I have put things that I wish I know before starting 5:2. A sort of general guide to how you might feel etc. what to expect and what changes.

If you would like a read.

    The link is below:

    https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/my-10-week-weight-loss-week-by-week/#post-91559

I wish you luck. Keep posting and ask any questions you like. We try to be a helpful buch of people here. One thing I can guarantee is that you will get lots of encouragement, a real community feel. Coming onto the thread after a time is like chatting to old friends.

    Hi Phoebe

No I don’t think the neck will change on a regular basis and also it was a strange one to me. The rest I can understand. I will try to find out why for the neck.

Yes some of it will be water, a loss is nice to see though. Ahh yes the eating trap. All too easy to fall into at first. I did the same on odd occasions. That’s why a started calorie counting for the next couple of weeks as I wanted to think about it. I thin had reminded myself about calorie content in certain foods and went back to estimating the following weeks. I found that this was ok then. I am now on the FBD which is a kickstarted to this one and again counting for the 6 weeks I am on it.

Then I shall hopefully be so aware that I won’t need to count. I think it helps every few weeks/months to do this. I don’t want to be completely tied to this method though. I used to always give a glance at packets when I bought foods (not all) and especially if they were what I thought of as treat foods. I would tend to chose the lower calorie treat food – so for example if I was choosing between a cream scone and a cream slice I would choose the lowest.

Have you looked up calories for dried cherries? Dried fruit is high. I was surprised when I checked calories in some a while ago.

Dearly departed queen? That must be Queen Victoria? Well at least she gets you a day off!! How kind.

It sounds like a lovely weekend. I hope you enjoy it.

    Hi Applepie

Does Zenmate pick up all UK channels?

    Hi Tigon

Well done you have got through the fist week. Now it will be an easier ride.

It was over three months before I even attempted to fast three days a week. I normally do this if I have a meal out or something, just to get me back on track.

    Well done Lori

I am so pleased for you.

    Enjoy your golf.

    Ginette

Ginette Zenmate doesn’t pick up any channels, all it does is block your IP address and you can choose which country you want to be in. I think there are 5 choices. Of course if I want to watch UK tv I choose the UK. Then use Filmon or something similar to watch live TV or go into BBC player to watch old programmes.

I forget to say food was delicious yesterday at the wedding reception. A Michelin start restaurant, first one I have ever been to. Very small portions. But presentation and taste delicious. The only think I didn’t like was the cordless ewes milk as it tasted as bad as it sounds. This was on the side so I only had a little taste.

All of the rest was delicious. Food was served in the middle of the plate with a some dotted (literally) sauce around. The dessert was exquisite it was Eton mess this was served in a ball of what initially looked like polystyrene but was obviously not it was meringue it was about 2/3 of the size of a tennis ball.

Just to make you all jealous.

    Ginette

    Thanks for the info Applepie

    I hope your doing well.

    Ginette

    Hi Ginette,

It is nice to see you back here, and I am glad your trip is going well. The dinner sounds like it was amazing.

I am sorry to report that I have not been able to do a second fast day this week.. I am afraid to get on the scales, frankly. I also have to travel next week and have a work dinner on both Monday and Tuesday as well as tomorrow night. Urrrrgggghhhh. How do you go to a restaurant and have only 500 cals? I have to figure this one out. I was thinking that I might do a couple of fast days when I am traveling, but to be honest, that is unlikely to be very doable as you meet people usually over meals don’t you (outside of the proper meetings). Today through the next 8 days with dinner out EVERY night!
Help! I don’t want to put all the weight back on. Any one with good ideas on how to manage this?

    Hi Salma

    It truly was.

My advice is to enjoy the week although cut back where you can. There will be days that if you want you can take a healthier option. If people are slowing down loss they are sometimes advised to stop for a week as it shocks the body. You have one fast day which is good.

I have to say that around the end of the day yesterday, my companions were getting hungry and we were walking past a fish and chip shop. We had portions of chips. I toyed with the idea in my mind, but having the smell in the car and not eating them would have been too difficult. I jumped in with both feet and had a portion. I ordered a small one had them open so that they weren’t piled high and only ate half as this is what satisfied me. It felt good both to eat them and not to have them all. I always knew today would be a day off.

Enjoy what you eat. Leave what you don’t want and know that you might not lose weight but aim for staying the same. Don’t weigh the day after a big meal, leave it a day. I weighed on Friday morning and I had had a loss on the week – I weighed today and it was showing 2lbs heavier. So for this week I shall weigh tomorrow and record that weight.

Don’t feel guilty, make good choices and enjoy!!!!

    Ginette

    Good evening.
Ginette.. very good advice. I felt like a pizza tonight and ordered one, but I only had less than a half. The restaurant decided not to charge for the pizza because I had left more than half on the plate-they decided if I didn’t like it, I wasn’t going to pay for it! Double whammy, eh?

Yes.. I will not make myself go crazy or feel guilty, I will just have half of my food; It is wasteful, but it is also wasteful of all my efforts if it ends up on my hips.

I thought you guys might enjoy the following (Milena.. take note) This, at least, has been my experience. Exercise is good for health but maybe not so useful for the waistline:

Let me know what you think.

    Hi Salma

Fantastic! A free pizza!! They are very big portions. So you should see that halo glowing and I bet you feel good for only eating half.

I don’t like wasting food either, a pet hate of mine but in my case a few chips or yours half a pizza not too bad.

If it makes you health better that is good. Well done that girl!!

I can tell you from experience that I lost weight when I exercised and didn’t do any kind of diet. I lost over 2 stone.

    What I noticed:

Exercise may me feel better and tone up. I lost inches.
Exercise changed my eating habits a bit. I didn’t crave chocolate, sweets and treats but I still enjoyed them and ate them when I wanted.

The logic I found from this is exercise satisfied a part of my brain with what used to satisfied with only food.

No I didn’t count calories but like 5:2 it changed my eating habits and I may have taken in less calories apart from burning fat.

A lot of exercise I personally don’t find sustainable but moderate exercise with 5:2 I do. Hence my choices.

I did also drink a lot more water.

The images in these links may be genuine or not. Exercise helps tone the body and so can alter body shape.

Fitbits and the like are helpful if you want to monitor yourself and set achievable targets. I don’t have one but I do have a pedometer which at the moment I don’t use by may do in the future. I monitor myself on amounts of time played on Wii games and how much they get my heart racing.

    I hope this helps.

    Ginette

    Hi..
Ginette.. I completely agree that exercise does you the world of good in so many ways. I helps keep you on an even keel, make you feel better, look better. The point of the articles was that exercise does NOT in and of itself make you lose weight (only food restriction does that). I am not sure this is the case as I suppose a lot more research has to be conducted. In my case, exercise has not helped me lose weight despite sticking to it religiously for 4 months, 4 times a week with a trainer. Expensive and exhausting. I loved the feeling AFTER the sessions, but my weight did not shift. In fact, I GAINED fat and LOST muscle!!! I could not explain it, but the articles do corroborate MY experience.

I now want to go back to exercising for all the other benefits, but now realise that I am not doing it for losing weight.

    Have a greeeeaaaaaaat Sunday everyone.

    Hi Salma

Yes I agree it seems very strange. I have heard about gaining weight through muscle but not through fat…..that seems so unfair.

I am so pleased that I lost as it obviously doesn’t happen to all, but as mentioned above my food habits changed and again not through a decision on my part a decision that my body obviously made.

I haven’t done as much this week as lots of busy days, I must get back to normal next week.

By the way. I lost 2lbs this week, so I am really pleased with that after a day out as well.

    Ginette

    Well Done Ginette!!!
When one of you loses, it almost feels like I have 🙂
After all, we are all in this together.

    Thanks Salma

I always feel really pleased for others and relieved if they are struggling and lost as well.

    Ginette

Yay! I have just out my weight into tracker and I have broken out of the morbidly obese bracket into the severely obese one. Yes I know it still doesn’t sound great to some, but to me it is another milestone.

Now heading for the obese one. I shall reach it this year for sure.

On Wednesday I wore a jacket that did not do up by what seemed like six inches in the early autumn. It now does up comfortably so that was a good feeling…..now it just needs someone to notice. That will come I know and you can be sure I will report it here!!

    Ginette

    Oh.. how wonderful Ginette!
I am noticing 🙂 We are all noticing around here.
    What a wonderful achievement.
In all honesty, you are helping me stay on this path. If I were doing this alone, I would probably have chucked it in by now. As you know, I am going through a few weeks with absolutely no loss and so many obligations that it is difficult to stick to a proper regimen. Just hearing others’ triumphs makes me feel that it can be done, if a little stalled at the moment.
Keep losing.. and keep telling me about it.
    I am thrilled for you.

    Good Morning!

Congratulations Ginette on the jacket that now does up comfortably! What a great feeling!

Yes, girls, do exercise for it’s many benefits and let the pounds fall where they may! I’ve often read about someone who has taken up running and couldn’t understand why they didn’t lose weight. It’s because “You can’t outrun your fork”. Weight loss happens in the kitchen, not the gym as they say. As with anything else, all people are different, but for the majority, the above is true.

I made 6 Mason jar salads yesterday, so I’ll be eating well this coming week! I made three with chicken & hard boiled egg, and 3 Taco salads with seasoned ground beef, black beans and corn. They were quite easy to assemble.

Off to the golf course in a couple hours. Hoping we don’t get chased off the course by rain. Just pop up showers forecast for today.

    Have a great Sunday!

    Hi everyone,
Please can I come and join you? I was attracted by the title which totally sums me up at the moment – I have read through some of the pages and you seem a supportive larky lot!
I have had weight issues most of my life but ‘wore it well’ – at least I thought so, ha ha! Last year I gave up smoking though (yay me! smoking was my alternative to eating ) and have since put on 30 lbs. Which takes me to – gulp- 16 stone or 101 kg. I just can’t believe I let myself get to this point where no clothes fit and I’m just, well, round. I’ve never really dieted very successfully before – I lost weight on Atkins a few years ago but I can’t believe it’s a healthy way to go, long term.
Anyway, I’m here and hoping for support. I am fairly active, not in a gym bunny way but I’m a gardener and planning to build in lots more exercise.
Although I feel ultra-dismayed at my starting point, there is a large part of me (well, all parts of me are large atm!) that feels relief that I have actually decided to do something about it, rather than become one of those people they have to take the house wall down to get out. Really look forward to getting to know you all.

Hi Kate and welcome to our Foodaholics Anonymous corner 🙂

You are in good company. We are all recovering foodaholics at various stages of rotund. Some have achieved their targets, some still have miles to go. I started at 93 Kg (where I had NEVER reached in my life even during pregnancy) and, as you say, wore it well (ish), but felt awful and hated my pictures. I have been on this 5:2 WOL (Way of Life) since around 10 Feb and have lost 4 Kg. It is not a massive amount, but for the past 6 weeks I have been traveling and work socializing and it is thanks to this WOL that I have not really gained during this time, despite not actually losing.

I look at it as a new way to live more than a diet. I had done the Atkins and lost tons (well around 27 Kg) before but put it all back on because, frankly, it is not sustainable to live like that. I want to eat normally, and if this means that I fast 2 days a week, so be it. I do not want to have forbidden anything because if I do, it will be all I think about and I also become a crashing bore at social occasions by refusing this and that. So, I am on this path, not too far from where you are at the moment. Ginette is a wonderful resource, and I am sure she will jump in with suggestions, help and encouragement.

I am so glad you decided to do this.. we are all in this together to help, prod, cajole and applaud each other. Jump on board!

    Thanks Salma

You are all also helping me. If and when you feel like a kickstart and you don’t have so many work lunches/social engagement, try the FBD. Wait for a time that feels right for you, it has really kickstarted my weightloss again after two weeks of excess. Week four nearly at an end now and two more to go. Then treats return!! Hopefully not as many as those two weeks but definetly some. I also seem to have had one meal off a week due to different meals out. It worked tor me and I always had something to look forward to.

I am sure that Milena and I will post full results here when we finish.

It will fall back into place, give it time and you will get rewarded when it does. Have you lost inches?

    Hi Lori

Yes a really good feeling. I love the saying that you can’t outrun the fork!! These salad jars look interesting, I have never heard of them before. Do they keep longer because they are sealed in a jar. Intriguing.

I hope the rain stays away for you today.

Welcome Kate, everybody is welcome here. Well it is really possible to achieve the loss you wish for. The first week is usually the most difficult. I have been here since January and chunttering away, as is my norm. I have lost two stone all bar a lb in that time. I lost a stone in the few months before. I love the threads. They give me and a lot of others a sense of friendship and community, a place to discuss heights and lows to laugh, encourage and support others…as they will support you.

Much laughter comes from Milena’s antics, she had a bit of a grievance about a courgette last week. Courgette came off worse.

I am posting a link to another thread where there is info for people just starting. It may help.

    https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/my-10-week-weight-loss-week-by-week/#post-91559

We all came on here probably feeling a little like you but through the weeks we have blossomed into the flowers that we all are underneath.

I am on a long journey now under six stone to lose which sounds like a mammoth task. I have lost three so the good news is I’m a third of the way there.

Good luck for your start and keep posting we are all good at helping where and when we can.

    Ginette

    Hi all,

I am back from my travels have weighed in not lost or gained!

Have shook scales to make sure they worked!

Tried jogging whilst I was away, NEVER AGAIN thought I was going to die. Downloaded an app couch to 5k walk for 5 mins, easy I thought jog for 60 seconds then walk for 90 repeat 6 times, easy I thought I ran everywhere when I was a kid how hard can it be! , first jog for 60 seconds I was sure I was dieing my heart pounding legs like jelly, walk for 90 seconds get breath back jog again 60 seconds no way couldn’t do it just 30 seconds later I admit defeat and complete the restof the way by walking.

have new found admiration for marathon runners now but never again will I try to run.

    Hope you are all ok,

    Audrey

    I’m with you there Audrey

I can’t wait is see how you get on with Exerbeat.

Wait until Tuesday and remember the food in transit argument. You will hopefully get a surprise.

    Audrey

    Hi Kate

I found actually facing my weight (91 kilos) si the same ballpark, the first and the best thing It happened on New Years day, after realizingI was the only overweight person at a party, wearing trousers which were a perfect fit, I’d had them for two years, always too big, and a size 22 top. I wasn’t a size 22, just a 20, but it dawned on me that I was actually planning to grow.

Sill took a few weeks to get properly started, but I think it was sharing with Salma, on this thread, which really got me on my journey.

Good luck and tell us how you get on.

    Welcome Kate

You are more than welcome to join us I am sure you will find us a friendly bunch.

Shout out if you need help, there is usually someone about

    Audrey

Thanks all, I think I’m going to like it here! I’m feeling positive and a little nervous, but it seems like nobody’s actually died doing this? Only kidding. My first fast day is tomorrow.
I’m also getting to the age where the other health benefits are really appealing, not just the weight loss. I’ve long thought I must be a prime candidate for type-2 diabetes, although I had tests done last year which were quite reassuring. (Before I put on the thirty pounds though!) My mother also had dementia, very interested to read in the book how fasting might be a protection as that has got to be my worst nightmare having cared for her in her final years.

I used a forum to help quit smoking, first time I’ve done that and it was amazingly helpful, realising that other people have gone through very similar experiences and learning how they coped was great. And having ‘buddies’ who are into reading that I ate a boiled egg for breakfast or have lost a quarter pound is brilliant, as I don’t feel that my family will be overwhelmed by that info!!! Hopefully I will have more exciting news to impart as we go along.

One of my major goals is to start riding my beautiful horse again – he is quite a sturdy type (luckily) but I feel it’s not fair on him when I’m so heavy. We have had many great adventures together riding round the hills including a three month long ride right round Scotland a few years ago. Ho loves exploring (as do I) but I am limiting what he does to much shorter gentler outings as I get myself back into shape. But it’s a great motivator for me. (He says, no it’s fine, no hurry…)
