  • Well heck folks let’s put our heads together and make a recipe for homemade low sugar marmalade.

    Borrowing and pasting from online highway.

    Orange marmalade.
    Orange marmalade is a comfort food that is both sweet and tangy, but it doesn’t have to be given up on a diabetic diet. There are many good, sugar-free orange marmalades in grocery stores, but there are also many great sugar-free marmalade recipes available online.

    Oranges.
    Single-Serve Diabetic Marmalade

    Ingredients:

    2 navel oranges 2 lemons 1 pt. water  oz. powdered gelatin  cup Splenda

    Cut the rind from both the oranges and lemons. Make sure to remove the entire white part. Cut the rind and pulp into small pieces. Place them in a pan with 1 pt. of water and boil gently for about 30 minutes. Cook longer if the pulp and rind are not yet tender. Add the Splenda and gelatin. Remove the pot from heat. While hot, put into a glass jar.

     
    Orange marmalade.
    Low-Sugar, Cranberry-Orange Marmalade

    Ingredients:

    ½ cup of sugar ½ cup water 1/8 tsp. ground cloves 1 cup cranberries 3 cups store-bought, sugar-free marmalade 1/3 cup orange juice 3 tbsp. grated orange peel

    Yield 4 cups

    Over low heat, cook the sugar, water and cloves. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, then increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil. Simmer until the cranberries are soft, but still identifiable–about four minutes. Then remove from heat.

    In an additional pan, heat the orange juice and orange peel to a roiling boil. Stir occasionally. Allow the mixture to heat for about 20 minutes. Then remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool.

    With a slotted spoon, transfer the cranberries to the marmalade. Discard the excess liquid. Mix gently. Place into four jelly jars and seal them tightly. The marmalade will last in the refrigerator for about four weeks.

     
    Oranges.
    Low-Sugar British Marmalade

    4 large oranges ½ grapefruit 1/3 lemon 2 cups sugar

    Yield 4 pt.

    Cut the fruit into thin slices, after removing seeds. Cut each slice into quarters. Remove the white portions from the grapefruit and oranges. Add 3 qt. of water and let it stand for 24 hours. After 24 hours, bring the mixture to a hard boil for about one hour. Add 2 cups of sugar and boil slowly for 45 minutes. Spoon into a sterile jar and seal.

     
    Orange Marmalade
    Microwaveable, Sugar-Free Orange Marmalade

    4 large oranges 4 cups Splenda

    Yield 4 pt.

    Prepare the oranges by removing the peel. Make sure to cut the white part away from the peel. Cut orange into chunks, remove the seeds. Place peels and orange chunks into a food processor and pulse until the pieces are small and uniform in size. Add Splenda and pulse again.

    Place the mixture into a microwave-safe glass bowl and cook on high for two minutes. Stir, and return to the microwave. Cook again for another 2 minutes. Stir again. Repeat this process for a total of four times. Do not let the marmalade overflow. Transfer it to glass jars and seal them. Store in the refrigerator.

    Thankyou both Weemam and SAMM! Will definitely try the low sugar marmalade, navel oranges still beautiful in shops at present. And I will hunt for the Marigold Wee, even less cals than Miso! We can get all the Asian, Indian, Afghani stuff here, surely it should be possible to get something from the Mother Country!

    I hope someone from Mars doesn’t read this, they may wonder about “marigold wee”…

    I’m thrilled to hear that tomatoes are so good for us. I ate a whole 400g tin of them earlier today at only 92kcal the lot! I’ve always eaten oranges with pith and zest intact. It’s an acquired taste and I’ve had some funny looks while doing it but it’s a minor way to challenge people’s preconceptions 🙂 and now I find it’s pretty good for me too. Result!!!! 🙂

    Have always eaten cumquats (Fortunella) whole and lemons but must work on oranges – not so keen on bitter flavours but Stevia may help.

    Just LUUUUUUVVVV tomatoes in all forms. Nice to know that I love at least one food that isn’t bad for my waistline 😉

    The real (and rational) answer is unless you have an identified medical problem caused or made worse by salt, you can pretty much use any reasonable amount you want.

    I’ve never paid any attention to the salt police as I rarely eat processed food so the only salt I get is what I add to my food.

    I only peel veggies if the peel is not in good condition, and for mash as I don’t like it with peel in and it can be a real faff to remove it after the spuds are cooked.

    The only food that get a lot of salt is chips (fries) but I have temporarily given them up unless they are oven baked 😉

    As for low sugar marmalade, I’ll just have less of the real thing!

    I’m up before dawn so I can exercise before the painter arrives. He’s starting on the windows this morning, and I prefer not to have an audience when I’m throwing myself around the place in pursuit of fitness!

    After that I’m off to the tennis finals for the day and I’m going to be eating out tonight. I’m going to fast until this evening and then have whatever I fancy, and the same again when I go tomorrow 😛

    I’ve not lost any weight since last weeks huge drop but I’m not worried as I know it’ll come off, and I’ll wait until next week before weighing again.

    I have been laying in bed this morning, putting off getting up because I seem to have strained my back during the night. Probably whilst coughing non stop. I have lots to do today and a workman coming this afternoon so I must get moving soon. I am sure it will settle down after a dog walk. Falling apart at the moment – bloody tiresome.

    Samm – sorry honey I don’t use recipes, just put every veg at hand in a pot, add veg stock, chilli, garlic, onion and pepper. (despise the taste of salt and never add it to anything). This is why I am not a miso lover. Good news about the eggs, I eat one or two most days, bit addicted really. As for marmalade – not much fun without toast.

    Smithy – have you tried zero noodles instead of rice with your stir fry, lush( must rinse first).

    I am just looking through coach trips to find something I want to do mid December, may visit Bath, anyone been there?

    I am also planning a post Christmas Spa trip with my daughter for two days, redress Xmas excesses. Not a chocolate freak but can’t resist a glass of sherry Christmas morning, plus roast potatoes and of course Yorkshire pudding. My family don’t do birds, just beef. I will make myself a salmon en croute.

    I must also sort out what wear for my daughters graduation, 2nd degree. I am not a big fan of these ceremonies, didn’t go to my own. I don’t think these bits of paper and pomp really count for much. I know this will cause a stir and that it is about celebrating the hard work and achievement of the student but I think we should focus more on people’s contribution to society. Actually I believe there should be a simple presentation given by the main course tutor in a college classroom with family present, the family could take their own photos and one gown could be used for all.

    As for ‘honorary’ degrees for celebrities don’t even get me started.

    The funds spent on hiring these buildings, gowns could be used to sponsor less fortunate children get access to education or provide classroom assistants for over worked teachers. Sorry guys, just my opinion.

    Now what to eat today – I feel a visit to the wet fish shop( fishmongers) coming on.

    I see you posted on another thread about your opinion of Big Pharma. Hear bloody hear. It also pisses me off mightily to see how they have the medical profession in thrall. The pharmaceutical companies were the ones who moved the BMI goalposts from 27.5 to 25, causing a lot of people in good health and of reasonable weight to suddenly find they were overweight and therefore more prone to complaints for which Big Pharma urges the quacks to hand out sweeties.

    I agree that eating a bit less and making wise food choices is far better than popping pills. However, once you pass certain landmark ages, they start shovelling pills down your throat ‘just in case’. I would have thought that a year and a half on 5:2 and a drop in weight of 2-stone plus with about a stone to go was far healthier than having to take chemical crap. Try telling that to even relatively enlightened docs.

    Jojo, I hope your back is ok. Mine has been a b…y nuisance. I’m enjoying reading the English preparations for Christmas. Quite different to ours! We are planning summer holidays and family get togethers. No panto tradition here and although we still have Chrissy pudding, fruit mince tarts and cake, the roast dinners have gone in favour of seafood and salad, thank goodness. Always plenty of swimming, eating and drinking involved in an Aussie Xmas. P

    I agree with everything you ranted about Hermaj 🙂 I keep away from the doctor if I can. Some of my friends are on first name terms with their GP!!!

    There was some research recently that suggested the positive effects of significant weight loss stay with us for the rest of our lives even if we put weight back on again. I’ll look for the info online and post a link.

    I’ve woken up bolshie today so here comes rant no 2. Don’t worry, I’m about to agree with you.

    Graduation ceremonies. I didn’t go to my first one. Back in the 70s London Uni used to hold their graduation ceremonies 18 months after graduation, by which time the graduates, or this one at least, had lost interest. They hired the Albert Hall and wheeled out the Queen Mum who was Chancellor at the time. To take part in all this posturing, graduates had to hire cap and gown. All this so that rellies, who had paid an extortionate sum, could spend hours waiting for the brief moment when their loved one walked across the stage. My refusal to take part in this charade did cost me, though. After my father died I was told he didn’t believe I had been to uni because he had never seen a photo of me in cap and gown.

    There’ll be another one next April, always assuming I get the MA (wish they’d hurry up with the results). I don’t think I shall be going. £40 admission for each of two rellies or friends. £60-odd to hire cap and gown, just for a few split seconds of me prancing across the stage in danger of tripping over my gown – they obviously don’t think shorties like me ever get degrees. I don’t think I’ll bother.

    I would far rather see my hundred smackers and all the dosh that unis spend on these ceremonies going towards causes like those you suggest – opportunities for disadvantaged kids and provision of more teaching assistants. And what about grants for mature people to return to study? I’d be prepared to bet that such funding would save the NHS a bob or two. Rant over!

    Bath, beautiful city. I haven’t been for a while, but a favourite place in the UK. They also make the best cup of tea in the country. I assume it’s something to do with the quality of the water. Well worth a visit.

    Well, I did attend my graduation ceremony way back in 1973. I made myself a long black pinafore dress which looked way more elegant under the academic gown than the mini skirts worn by other girls with their bare legs sticking out below the hem of the gown. 😀 I sashayed across that stage and looked the prof straight in the eye as he welcomed me into the guild of graduates. I was the first person in our family to go to university and my mother had to get a job to help support me there. It was my parents’ day to celebrate as much as mine. After all, at last they could stop paying for me! Mind you, they did subsequently fork out for my wedding and my mum scrimped and saved to get me a cooker! Back then we got means tested grants for further education. I never went overdrawn. Debt was a very dirty word back then.

    Since then, I’ve done much more important things! I’ve held down worthwhile jobs (analytical chemist, school teacher), married (and been widowed) and given birth to three children who are now adults. These experiences have made me who I am. Who am I though? I’m retired and nearly a Nana!! 🙂 both of which are important too!

    Everyone’s different and we all matter 🙂

    Sons are brilliant. I also have two and a clever daughter who’s providing a grandson soon too.

    I was born in 1952, the year the Queen came to the throne. Elizabeth was more or less inevitable but I’ve never disliked it. Over the years I’ve had some weird and wonderful shortened forms of it though!

    Lizzie I was born in 1953 but my parents chose to call me Anne ( middle name Prudence, so always get called Annieprue by family). For some unknown reason my sons nicknamed me Nama and it has stuck, even their fiances/ partners call me that. Would have loved a daughter, but luckily two gorgeous girls are now around here a lot.

    My son took up karate in his thirties and took to it like a duck to water. Funny, because he inherited the clumsy gene from me, but has done really well and loves it. I am glad I don’t have to wash his canvas outfit now he has moved out!

    Sorry if TMI but sitting on the loo this morning and my back pinged ..Ouch .. Not nearly as sore as it was last time so just going to take it easy today . Still sitting in my PJ’s ( not normal for me lol) . Going to take it easy all day . My lovely OH has done the washing and has potatoes peeled for his dinner .
    I never feel old and I always joke about when I look in the mirror and this wee auld woman stands in front of me so I cant see 🙂 🙂 … well today I actually feel like that wee auld woman lol .

    Back from the dog walk, wasn’t comfortable but survived. Now waiting for the plumber.
    Hermaj, you could get the graduation photo done by hiring the costume for a day, no need to attend a ceremony. Actually my daughter is getting her degree from my uni so I may borrow the gown and get a photograph done, add it to the rogues gallery.
    Actually I want to put them in the family tree.
    I am also the first one in my family to get a degree which I took by attending uni one day per week for 4 years, not easy whilst running my own business. Sadly neither of my parents lived to see me achieve this but my mother always said I was too clever for my own good. My father always said I was a born social worker, sucker for a lost cause. Teaching was the path I followed but if I had my time again I would focus on something far more hands on creative – flower arranging, hair dressing, something you can forget when you leave work. I wouldn’t have minded being an antique dealer either.

    Didn’t get to the ‘wet fish shop’, yes it is a real term, to distinguish it from fish and chip shops. Actually having eggs with cheese on top just to please Samm and his Granny.

    Booked Bath trip, looks lovely, hope the weather still ok in December.

    This will be my first Christmas in my own flat, just wondering what to do about decorations. Could go traditional or modern? What do you all like to do? Beach parties and salads sound good to me. I love the snow and the way it changes our view, seems to soften the landscape but the realities of travelling anywhere are another matter. what do you do Weemam?

    I see that the child abuse has raised its ugly head again.

    Armistice day has definitely meant more to me this year. I have discovered so many of my family over the five lines I am tracing that sacrificed their lives during the First World War. It was really shocking the number of young men who lost their lives, whole families destroyed. We certainly owe them a debt and I agree that we should remember through ceremony. Could we not do this more privately though, are these massive ceremonies necessary?

    I’m with you on care of the karate suit, Nama. Washing separately from everything else since one of my son’s yellow belts got in with the white suits. Oh! that was a wash day disaster! But the ironing is the worst… 🙁

    I just had to brag that Ross was the first in our family too that has graduated . Made even more special by the fact that he was not expected to live OR if by any miracle he did (doctors words) he would be more or less a vegetable . .

    Talking about Doctors . When I lost my almost 5 stone a few years ago I had to go to the DR for my Asthma check up.. I told her I was doing Low Carb and had lost almost 5 stone ( what did she do?) she gave me a diet sheet for calorie control . I was a size 12 in some things and looking better than I had for years . I went over to the chemist in tears .she was lovely and said the dr was old school and didn’t believe in LOW CARB. she hugged me and said “Margaret you have never smoked or drank and you have lost almost 5 stone < go home and be proud of yourself” I will never forget that day …

    Good idea about hiring cap and gown, jojo, but I’m really not bothered. I’ve no parents to impress, or to prove to that I really DID go to uni. I’d sooner put the dosh to a good cause, like to help the first of our junior family members when he goes to uni in 3 or so years time.

    wee, good for your clever son. I wonder if having a clever mum had anything to do with it, you know, genes and things. 🙂

    As for quacks I often wonder where some of them come from. One of them up in your neck of the woods – mum of one of my best friends – was convinced she had a drink problem when, like you, she doesn’t touch the stuff. Another told her that as the mum of a large family she was just tired and should relax more. She was finally diagnosed with a thyroid problem and once that was checked she was able to enjoy both her job and her family.

    A similar thing happened to my brother’s ex. Aged 30, a mum of two and usually very energetic, the doc told her of course she was exhausted, what did she expect with two small kids? She wouldn’t take no for an answer and finally was sent to see a specialist. Hodgkin’s Disease, fortunately discovered at an early stage. The treatment was gruelling but it worked, she’s still alive and well at 71. But if she hadn’t persisted…

    Another one – much fatter than I ever was so she wasn’t in a position to nag me – asked me how I knew I was lactose intolerant. Read my expletive deleted notes, I thought, but I gave her a polite reply.

    Hermaj I don’t go to the doctor unless I really need to . Our eldest almost 52 now and when he was a baby I knew something was wrong he had a very swollen tummy and projectile vomiting he had white stools . I knew there was something not right but being 20 years old hadn’t had much experience with “life” anyway I took it so long then told the dr if he didn’t get me a second opinion I was going elsewhere .
    They then did tests and discovered he was ceoliac 🙁 he has been on the special diet all of his life .

    The strange thing is that he has been married now for about 28 years and his lovely wife was diagnosed with it just a few years ago ( how strange) Now our 2 granddaughters aged 21 and 25 have been diagnosed too .

    50 years ago I had to do all of his baking and cooking to check it was OK but now they can buy it all ready made . Lucky for our DIL . She is lovely and I tell everyone I couldn’t have knitted her 🙂 but she can’t cook . My son can though AND bake because I taught him . SHE is so pleased about that 🙂

    My neighbour’s daughter has recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease. She’s in middle 30s. It’s strange how it can be dormant for so long and suddenly surface.

    My sister is gluten intolerant. If anyone asked her how she knows that, her story wouldn’t be a pleasant one and she might not be polite! Gluten free products are horribly expensive which makes life pretty hard for her.

    Both my son’s are excellent cooks. We always did lots together in the kitchen when they were small but also they grew up in an era of young and entertaining TV chefs, mostly men. My daughter can cook but only when pressed!

    Thanks for telling me your story, wee. Coeliac disease is a difficult one to handle and it must have been harder still 50 years ago, compared to now when there are products widely available that coeliacs can eat problem free. It’s great that one of the happy spin-offs of the situation is that your son has become an expert cook and baker.

    jojo, I’m so impressed that you were able to juggle work and study so successfully for four years. I know I couldn’t have done it. From the outset I knew I would have to go full-time, otherwise I would simply give up. Of course, I was able to work during the long vacation and having a bit of commercial experience I could get quite pleasant and fairly well-paid temp office jobs.

    More recently, for the post-grad stuff, I did combine work and study but being freelance I could duck under the radar for short periods to complete specific assignments. The colleague who supplies me with most of my work was one of my referees when I first applied so she was very supportive and understanding.

    Trust me, my degree nearly killed me. I had essays to write every six weeks so all breaks were lost. I frequently worked through the night and all weekend. After it was finished I went to Spain on my own for two months to recoup, I was totally exhausted. I enjoyed my spell in Spain though, attending lessons in Spanish every morning but I am not sure I learnt much, mostly brain dead.

    Still waiting for the plumber, so irritating.

    Jojo, I’m a huge fan of Zero noodles, but they don’t sell them at the ‘local’ Boots (it’s 8 miles away) in this part if the world, and I’ve yet to find a Holland & Barratt. I usually bring some to Wales with me but this time forgot. Luckily I had enough calories left yesterday to have a small amount of rice.

    Hope your plumber has arrived now and has put things right for you. We have to have a new flu so it will be a day or two before we are sorted, but at least the central heating is on again. Need to be warm and cosy in this awful weather. Bath is lovely, I know you will enjoy your break there.

    I’m with those who hate going to their GP. Weeman, that was a terrible experience. It does seem medical training is somewhat lacking in people skills.

    Apart from a supplement for post-menopausal women and glucosamine for my joints, I try not to take anything, even for headaches if I can help it. Fortunately I don’t have them very often. I think it’s because my mother has always been one of those who took pills for absolutely everything, and I can’t remember a time when she hasn’t been on some kind of medication. It put me off for life. During periods of extreme stress in my life – and there have been a few – I took St John’s Wort. I know it has had a mixed press but I found it very helpful. Well, that and gin!

    So far as decorating for Christmas is concerned, I love it, much to the chagrin of OH. He had never married or lived with anyone before me, other than for one very brief period, and had never made much of Christmas. I, on the other hand, am quite artistic and having re-trained as a florist after retiring from the law 6 years ago, am always wanting to try out new ideas. We live in a little stone cottage, so I use lots if natural materials as well as a few garlands of artificial ivy around the fireplace, which would frazzle the real McCoy. Fortunately OH has come round in his thinking and admits that it does look nice when I’ve finished. Men!

    Lizzie – it was interesting to hear that losing weight, then re-gaining, may actually have done some good! As a life-long yoyo dieter, all I have ever read indicated that it was very bad for me. What good news!

    Reheating pre-cooked pasta, Jojo? Dr Mosley would give that the thumbs up and no mistake! His ‘Trust me! I’m a Doctor’ series was very interesting indeed.

    For those who didn’t see the first episode of the most recent series, as I remember it they showed that cooking, cooling and reheating starch based foods renders a proportion of the carbohydrate resistant to digestive enzymes and it passes through the gut as a type of fibre! They did the experiment with some waiters and waitresses in an Italian restaurant, measuring blood glucose and insulin levels over a period of time during and after eating freshly cooked pasta, cooked and cooled pasta and cooked, cooled then reheated pasta. The insulin spike for the last one was approaching half of that for the freshly cooked one. I think it was around 60%.

    Morning/evening FT’s.

    The conversations on here are fantastic. Such a variety of thoughts and opinions and it’s wonderful that everyone respects each other’s points of view as each are valid for each of us.

    I’m not having the best of weeks this week, surely the stars are misaligned for me, lol, I’m trying to mitigate any evening issues. Last night OH kindly prepared the veggies, unfortunately only made about 1/3 of the usual amount (he said to only give him some and to leave enough for me … if I’d done that he’d have got NONE, lol) so I was unusually still peckish after dinner. I tried water, coffee etc to stave off but no, I ended up having to have something and of course that put me over my amount, not by much but more than I wanted.

    Tonight the family are coming over the celebrate OH’s birthday, so it will be a bought tea, again I’ll try to minimise anything I consume but will also not have anything during the day again. Tomorrow is his actual birthday and I know that friends are bringing over a cheesecake (his favourite type of cake) on behalf of his sister and brother in law in Holland who arranged this as a surprise for him and I’ll be expected to partake, even if just a slither (which is all it will be).

    Having said all this if I stay the same weight or only a 100 or 200g heavier I’ll be very happy.

    After nearly 20 years of avoiding wheat my OH can now eat small quantities of my home made organic wheat sourdough. Marvellous! Much more convenient to have one loaf between us and it keeps for the week in the fridge.
    I am on a first name basis with my GP. He is totally supportive of anything we do. Willing to do any tests we want.
    Jojo, Herm, Lizzie, (my middle name is after the Princess, Margaret), I took 26 years to complete my degree. Left to marry my boy, had 4 kids (then 2 to 16) and drove 130 km round trip to uni. I was the 2nd to get a degree in the family. First female. Sadly dad died just before I graduated. Our ceremonies didn’t cost an arm and a leg and I was very proud to prove the old girl (43) could do it. I proudly attended my son’s PhD ceremony and daughter’s first. She didn’t bother to go to the Masters do. Still waiting for the youngest to finish 🙁 I see them as public recognition of all the hard work. Like 5:2, we should celebrate success through effort.

    Stepped on the scales to a new pb this morning. Didn’t tempt fate by a second weighing 😉 Cheers all P

    Hi Lizzie. Puppies are all growing nicely thank you for asking 🙂 .. no homes yet although we have got some people who are interested in seeing them when they are old enough. My thought for the rest of this week is to just relax through it and not stress about things and just start again Saturday.

    Purple and jojo, you both put me to shame. Compared to the way in which each of you managed to juggle jobs, kids and God knows what else, my own higher education as a mature student has been, to use the vernacular, a piece of p**s. I would never have had the self discipline, unlike others among our forum friends who have studied via the Open University or its equivalent in other parts of the world, to undertake any course where I wasn’t obliged to show my face at lectures and deliver assignments on time. I need a touch of paranoia to keep me on the ball, as I do with the day job.

    To pick up the discussion on the maintenance thread re eating disorders, I’m pretty sure I don’t have or ever have had one. The idea of stuffing my face then going off the puke it all up revolts me. It’s bad enough now, having become accustomed to our present WOE, to inadvertently overdo it and feel as sick as a pig as a result. Fortunately, it only happens a couple of times a year. 🙂

    I confess I’m sometimes a little careless on fast days and may end up closer to 600 than 500, but I don’t let it bother me. It’s still very moderate eating. Comfort eating I just don’t do. Never have. Quite the contrary. If I’m stressed, angry, upset, unwell, the first thing to go is the appetite.

    So why am I fat? (To be fair, I’m not THAT fat any more.) Genes, two fat parents. Upbringing, grossly overfed and made to clear every plate by said fat parents. Like many of you out there, I’ve dieted fairly successfully in the past but it’s all crept back on again, despite the fact I rarely eat any of the usual fatty/sugary suspects, most of which I don’t like anyway.

    This is the first time I’ve had lasting success – two plateaux notwithstanding – and I reckon it’s the fasting that’s the clincher. OK, I blow it from time to time, but I don’t beat myself up. I find 5:2 fairly forgiving.

    Herm, I think the very reason 5:2 is so sustainable is because of its flexibility. If you don’t manage it one fd, there is always another day. You can choose the foods that appeal to you within the calorie guidelines so you don’t feel deprived. It doesn’t cost money (except the lovely new clothes) and you take control yourself. You don’t have someone else telling you what to do or bullying you into it. So success is double. …you gain a new healthy body AND you are proud of yourself for achieving it. Win win. 🙂 P

    Thanks for that Hermaj . It is good to hear that and know if we stray slightly then we can start again . I think maintaining must be really hard thing to get used to . .

    I used to eat so much ( I was a pig) and I would get a pain in my side . I haven’t done that for about 16 weeks ?? . It is all of you lovely people here who keep me going . That is one thing I am sure of .

    Hi Aussie we are a strong family of fasters here and if you cant have a sliver of hubbies birthday cake well what are we to do we live and we learn happy hump day people Aussie are you using the bovril? i seen it in woolies down here alongside another jar of balck looking gear bonox i didnt have my glasses with me so i couldnt read the fine print on the back bugger 😳 but can you explain the taste or a comparison of it or both please..

    AO, as others said, don’t fret about minor hiccups. You know, as we all do, that this WOL is a marathon and a steady pace is sustainable in the long term.

    Regarding earlier discussion of cost of graduation ceremonies, in Australia the regalia is available to hire through the various Alumni Associations with profits providing scholarships. Not sure about nowadays but all the so-called sandstone universities (usually the oldest in each capital) used not to charge families for tickets and the ceremonies usually included drinks and nibbles afterwards.

    As I was the first in my family to attend and graduate from uni, it was like my wedding, something I would rather not have had but was really for the rest of the family to celebrate – good reminder in a way that there’s no such thing as individual achievement because of the family support. Similarly the PhD many many years later. In that case I only hired the gown and hood and OH bought me the ‘velvet beret/floppy hat’ for Christmas. Occasionally I wear it for a joke if I’m giving a talk related to my previous research interests. I could wear it in the winter as it’s black velvet with a red cord around the band – quite stylish really if I had the right gear to wear it with 😉

    After 4 weeks of plateau, the scales down this morning 0.9kg (nearly 2lb) with a new low BMI of 30.9 so very pleased. Had small piece of grilled sirloin with salad for dinner last night and, though tempted as often am at the end of the 2nd FD, held firm against siren call of roasted cashews about 9pm.

    Lizzie, that’s really sweet of you to give me the H&B link. I’ve discovered there is a shop in Llanelli which is 8 miles away. Haven’t actually been into the town itself yet, as there is a fantastic retail park just outside (where the Boots is that doesn’t sell Zero noodles). It will be a good excuse to have a trip there. I really must get myself organised and order some on line like other sensible people on here. I’d have a good stock in both places then.

    Aussie, I do hope you put up some festive bits and pieces. Glad the pups are doing well. I’m sure you will have no problem finding good homes for them. Hope you enjoy the birthday celebrations – there is always next week.

    Hermaj, I’ve never understood bulimia either. I hate being sick at the best of times, though it hasn’t happened often in my life, but I can’t think of anything worse than voluntarily sticking my fingers down my throat. I suppose once you’ve done it and decided it’s an easy option when it comes to eating what you like and still lose weight, it could become a habit, but me, I’d rather stick to fasting.

    Weeman. I also have no excuse for weight gain other than I could eat (and drink) anyone under the table. My stomach never told me when I was full. Like Hermaj, I was also brought up to clear my plate, and even now I can’t bring myself to leave anything, hence I try and give myself smaller portions. OH , whom I love dearly, has the most irritating habit of leaving just a few bits and pieces, which means I then have to find a bit of newspaper and dispose of them in the food caddy – unless of course it’s something I can give to the dogs, though in view of their recent problems I’m not giving them any ‘extras’ at present.

    Time for sleep, if I can. It’s raining cats and dogs and is making a hell of a noise against the bedroom window…….

    Good evening all,
    My back fine by mid afternoon ta, just one of those silly things. Poor old Weemam seems to be having more trouble, good wishes to you pal, put hot water bottles on it, that’s what I did.
    The plumber arrived at 5.30, he was very pleasant, changed lots of parts to my toilet systern and fixed the problem. Makes a clunking sound now, post flush but I can live with it, at least it works, hurrah.

    Choir was boring tonight, preparing for a performance that I will miss, as I will be in Ireland. I don’t like any of the songs so I am quite pleased.
    We only practised one Christmas song ‘Santa Baby’ which I enjoyed, I like jazz, rock and soul singing best. Some of the choral pieces are great when performed but individual parts are very dull to practise, lots of waiting around while each section works on their bit. Yawn!

    Smithy, I buy my noodles from Amazon in bulk 24 packs, much cheaper about £1.50 per pack incl. postage. I have bought them for as little as £1.00 per pack on special offer through Amazon. I missed boots special offer too, annoying. Very expensive in H & B. I also buy nuts in bulk from Amazon, better price and quality on the whole, specialist suppliers.

    I agree about families celebrating achievements but not on such a huge scale, it makes it impersonal. I too had a white church wedding to please family, madness really, not a religious bone in my body, surprised the Methodist minister allowed us in his church. It made our parents so happy though.

    I would not encourage my children to have fancy weddings, keep it simple I say, in fact I am not sure I would encourage marriage at all, sorry guys, just how I feel.

    The pasta was cooked the day after Michaels programme about starch, sugars and reheating. Seriously though I can live without it, prefer a veggie stir fry. I only made the food for my daughter really, she loves pasta. I find it stodgy and not great to digest.

    Time for bed I think, sitting up tonight, need to keep the airways free.
