Thanks RT
I’m reading the Mercola article. I am going to print it and give it to the young physio I saw this morning as she was very interested in trying fasting. Might as well spread the word. Keep up the good work mate. P

Morning all.
Cold and sunny this morning. I got up very early to exercise before the painter arrives and he sent me a text 5 minutes ago saying he’ll be here at 9.30 😆
2nd day of B2B. I woke up in the night hungry, first time it’s happened, and was awake for a couple of hours. I feel fine this morning. Onwards and downwards.
Have a good day/evening everyone.
I’m sure you are on the right track Jojo. Remember we all took a lot years to gain the weight, so it will take time to lose. But that makes it sustainable.
You and I are doing opposite things …you can’t lie down, I can’t sit. Off to the physio again tomorrow morning. Came SO close to sympathy eating on my fast day today, but made it. P
Hermaj I finally read your link re ageing brains. Very interesting. The way I read it, it’s more beneficial learning new things if your brain and esp your memory are involved. So why are you worrying? You may not be able to manage the manual parts of the exercises mentioned, but your brain already gets a good workout with your work! I showed it to my husband and he declares he is going to take up quilting, just the thing for an Engineers brain!
Isn’t it a lovely feeling when you plan a fast day and stick to it! 2 months in and the fasting part keeps getting easier…. Now to work on the temptations on non fast days. This thread really helps with the motivation, reading about the success of all of you and your positive attitudes.
Sorry those of you up North, but I bought a whole tray of Mangoes today, just coming in and the fruiterers obviously selling them cheaply to get us hooked on them for summer! 12 mangoes for $15.00, couldn’t resist. I hate the heat in Summer but I love the fruit!
I love the heat, but the 43C weather in Perth and in the Clare valley in January was a little too hot for me!
I agree with Jojo about not wanting to contemplate the thought of never having another bread roll. I love it and at the moment it is my weekend treat. I find it difficult to resist and when I’m away somewhere and it is served with every meal I eat far too much of it and after a few days I suffer. If it is everywhere in Cuba I’m going to have to work hard to eat it only once a day maximum.
Who mentioned skin folds, eek! I hope they get smaller or I’m going to have to consider surgery. I like my aprons to be detachable 😆
SAMM, thank you for cheering me up on a Monday morning with your post about marmalade.
I don’t know if Paddington Bear is well known in the USA. If so, you and your wife may possibly have read his adventures to your kids when they were small. With the film version due to be released soon, I’m sure he’ll find his way acoss the Pond.
Anyway, Paddington comes from darkest Peru and when his guardian, Aunt Lucy, goes into a home for retired bears in Lima, he gets himself onto a ship and finds his way to London. All this is leading up to the fact that marmalade is the mainstay of his diet. He also likes bacon.
For non-fast days I propose the Paddington Bear diet. One slice of bread – preferably nice healthy homemade stuff – with a little butter and some marmalade. A second slice of bread to make a bacon sandwich. Come to think of it, with a bit of care it could even work on a fast day if you don’t eat anything else.
BTW just in case anybody is about to berate me for suggesting such a high carb content, I should point out that I’m only kidding. 🙂
I love marmalade, but don’t eat it very often. I’ll probably make some in January though and my weekend treat will be toast and marmalade rather than a bacon sarnie, and I’ll be thinking of hermaj every time I eat it 😆
I’ve just made some really hot as in lots of Jalapeno, veggie chilli. It is just what I’ll need after having the front door open all day for the painter :brrr:
Hi Amazon,
I’m honoured to think you will associate me for ever more with toast and marmalade. 🙂 Would you consider alternating t&m with a bacon sarnie as your weekend treat?
You will have guessed that I also like marmalade, especially the very chunky variety – but don’t eat it very often. Conversely, I don’t like jam very much and find the idea of a jam sandwich rather revolting.
Re bread in Cuba, I’d say go for it and anything else that appeals, unless it’s something that actually makes you feel unwell. You’ve proved to be a very disciplined and successful Fast Dieter, so if you were to gain a pound or two you would soon get rid of it when you get back to London.
Enjoy your veggie chilli. Hope it helps to mask any paint smells.
Hi hermaj,
I’ll find another time to eat bacon, or I may do as you suggest and use one slice for a sarnie and the other for marmalade. I too shudder at the thought of a jam sandwich, although like it on toast but rarely eat it. My preference for jam is in a sandwich of scone and clotted cream………….
I’ve already decided that I’m not going to weigh myself until I’ve been home from Cuba for at least a week as there is nothing worse than coming home and getting on the scales. I used to work with someone who would diet for a month before her holiday so she didn’t have to when she got home.
I’ll be trying a little of most things that are on offer food and drink wise, and a lot of some things, especially the rum 😉
Sorry to hear how uncomfortable life is at the moment for jojo and Purple, one unable to lie down, the other unable to sit. Purple’s eye problems must also be hard to cope with.
I’ve only had occasional experience of back pain, particularly one that hits just in the spot where the bra fastens, usually after too long at the computer. Even these minor incidents are enough to make me realise how very, very painful back problems can be. Hope things improve soon for both of you.
I’m fasting today too, I must have a masochistic streak!
I love spicy food, and if something is supposed to have heat I want it HOT!!!
I bought some fresh Jalapenos and they are great as they have a really nice flavour too.
I hope I don’t find any great shoes in Cuba as I already have far too many pairs.
I’m still unable to use the kettlebell. It will have to wait until the osteopath has finished working her magic.
It is getting dark, and the painter is still working away on the front door, singing and drinking green tea 😆
Hello all
All this talk of marmalade, and I’m on a fast day too! I don’t have a sweet tooth so it wouldn’t normally bother me, but I am now craving a brilliant marmalade bread and butter pudding which I often make when we are entertaining. It’s another Delia fail-safe recipe and absolutely scrummy!
Jojo – hope you are heeding all the wise advice summed up so succinctly by Hermaj – be kind to yourself. You’ve had a rough year generally from the sound of it, but it now looks as if you could be planning an exciting future! Lots to look forward to.
We had to have the boiler engineer in today too – no central heating since Friday, and it’s jolly cold here in Wales! He couldn’t fix it – we are now waiting for the electrician as every time we put the heating on it trips the circuit. Luckily we have hot water and have been lent a couple of convector heaters. I’m atrociously miserable when I am cold!
Poor PVE – I do hope the physio can sort you out quickly.
Amazon – the Cuban Countdown! How very exciting! You’re right – eat and enjoy. You know any gain will only be temporary. Had to laugh at your veg peel soup! And you seem to have a very happy, health-conscious painter!
Yorkies – we are definitely not fasting while we are away – ARE we?
Keep up the good work all. The electric man cometh………
Smiffy x
Hi Smiffy.
It is Jojo’s soup 😉
I hope your boiler gets fixed soon.
I made a couple of decisions a good few years back that experts disagreed with. I have a gas fire which is on now. (I’m not turning the CH on until after Cuba!) I was advised it was a waste of money. I also have an electric shower, and was given similar advice. A few years after I had an ongoing problem with the boiler which eventually was deemed a valve design fault in the model I have installed and once a replacement valve was produced it was fine. In the meantime, I had no boiler, but I had hot water to shower in and a fire to keep me warm.
You can’t fast while you are in York, especially if you are going to Betty’s.
Just woken up! 13 hours ahead of UK.
I have now lost 14 kilos since July. Not a brilliant loss but sustainable.
BMI just reached 32.
This WOL is thrilling for all of us- I am just so happy you are out there to share the downs and inevitable ups.
I have just been reading the NHS guide to weight loss.
If I had followed that I would never have lost much at all.
Sorry Purple to hear of your troubles. I sent a quick hello to you from Sydney airport as we were rushing from one gate to another.
Happy Fasting to southern hemispherites and sweet dreams to you up north.
XX TW
TW,14 kilos since July is excellent.
As for NHS guide to weight loss, I wonder if the people who write these things have ever tried to lose weight.
I was reading the BBC Good Food website explanation of 5:2 and it was obvious that the nutritionist who wrote it had not done any research or spoken to anyone who has tried 5:2 and had decided she didn’t think it a good way to lose weight.
I would recommend this WOE to anyone.
Good evening all .7 PM and I am just sitting down . Ross bought a sideboard yesterday and it “was cool” so I took him to get a TV unit to match today . he has so many boxes and I think 8 remotes lol . Being a PC geek I thought he would have all the remotes in one . It looked great but it took us about 3 hours to untangle grrr the cables at the back then post them all one by one through the WEE hole at the back . he phoned me about an hour ago and said he had decided to take away the freesat box and got in a muddle with the cables again ( as his hands are not too good ). SOOO back home and had a shower as my back was killing me . I was on my back for 2 weeks last year and I don’t want to repeat that again soon . I will be fine by tomorrow 🙂
I have ended up having 4 FD this week and have lots another 2 pounds …33 in total so that will do me .
I have now had my dinner and my weekly ice cream so all is well with the world .
I hope all how are feeling off colour are feeling a bit better . I hope the tradesmen do what the came to do and those travelling have a safe journey .
I think we have friend coming Wednesday going home Thursday night so we will be going out for a meal so I will do a FD again tomorrow . Have a good day/ night all and thanks again for being there .
Wee xx
Good morning fellow fasters. Glad to hear you have a safe journey across the world Tiwi and are settling back into NZ.
I was on a “roll” last night with my post but had visitors arriving so closed off quickly. As they left I got a message other friends were on their way over and after they left I went to bed. I can’t recall what I was going to be putting down so will leave it for now.
Not such a successful fast day yesterday but I’ll keep within my limits today and will call yesterday a semi-FD. Now I’ll do 3 b2b FD’s if I can manage it as I need to counteract the excess that I ate over the weekend, mainly due to being out for most meals which is unusual for me.
I don’t normally count calories from end of my Thursday FD until Monday FD but I don’t generally go overboard and I don’t believe I did on Friday or Saturday but definitely did on Sunday.
I love a bread roll but don’t have any bread very often as it usually makes me feel like there’s a lump in my stomach when I’ve eaten too much of it.
Must run for now as it’s an early start for me today at work 🙂
Happy FD for those fasting and enjoy your non-FD those who are not 😛
Edited to add:
Wee you must have been posting at the same time as me … that’s GREAT re the extra lbs lost with a total of 33 so far … you’re going great guns, pity re those cables though and yes you must take care not to overdo things for your back.

ive been reading about choline lately.
where food is the nutrition
our intestinal tract is our health.
choline helps buffer the intestines. Protects from things like alcohol and nsaids.
On mobile so hard for me to paste a link. To other references. Please google for your own reading.
if you click the choline search link youll see egg so much higher than everything else.
not only that but egg and cheese together synergize eachothers benefits.
my grandmother that recently passed away at age 98 ate boiled eggs every morning longer than I was alive.
Its interesting to me to learn what the very elderly eat to live do long. Then read scientific papers that shed light on those foods benefits. She also ate beans for many years . Like bean salads was intresting to read about their antioxidants in high amounts
Sorry Amazon. Jojo – all credit to you for putting the veg complete with peel in your soup. Your post made very interesting reading. Vegetable soup has long been a favourite low cal stand-by for me, and I have never thought if using the complete thing. Thanks – I will start doing it.
The central heating problem has at least now been identified – a tiny amount if water leaking into the boiler onto the wires and causing the circuit to trip. Back to the plumber who is coming to fix it tomorrow morning. The electrician has dried the connections and as it is a very tiny seepage we should be ok until then, so we are beautifully warm again. Hope you’re sorted soon Jo.
Tanga – glad you are home safe and sound. I think your weight loss us fantastic!
Hermaj – I haven’t read the age-brain article yet, but look forward to doing so.
A good fast day – boiled egg for breakfast, Bovril for lunch and prawn stirfry with a very small amount of rice tonight. I’ve even got enough calories left for my Cadburys Highlights fix later.
Have a good one all – day or night. x
Good morning fast trackers.
TW welcome back to the ‘top’ end of the world 😉 glad you had a good trip – so disciplined to resist the airline food. Haven’t flown anywhere this year to test my resolve but even though the food is less than wonderful I usually eat through boredom on long flights. Must go overseas again to try 😆
Well done on losses.
Sorry to hear of heating/other tradies problems, hope they’re resolved soon.
Jojo, in a very incisive post a day or so ago you wondered if anyone was following IF as Dr M originally proposed. I am very near to it, eating everything I used to but not as much. The only modification is that I don’t eat 2000/500C but up to my TDEE of 1850 and ~400 on FDs. The appeal of this WOL for me is that the thought of never being able to eat a certain food again sounds so much like any other eating ‘gaol’ where I’ve lost weight and then put back once I relax. My non FD treat is fresh bread sandwiches but I have half what I used to. Bacon sangers are pretty close to my idea of heaven but since seeing Dr M’s meat eating programme that’s limited to once/month. I don’t have a colon due to Crohn’s disease in my 20s so bowel cancer is not an issue but have a familial high risk of heart disease. Small changes over an extended period are easier to adopt for me.
Second of my b2bs today. Last night had whiting fillets (sprinkled with 1tsp lemon-flavoured fish oil and paprika, wrapped in baking paper and microwaved) and huge plate of green leaves with tomato and asparagus. Scales this morning only 0.3kg above best yet so have great hopes tomorrow’s weigh-in will show finally off the plateau.
Keep up the good work all – so inspiring!
Thanks Hermaj , we are all doing so well …isn’t it great
Samm great link and so much to read on there 🙂
Nicky I will be trying my fish like that thanks . I am always looking for something different to try 🙂
PVE I still have the odd bit of toast . I like the outside or the heel as we call it here in Scotland . I have it toasted with butter Yum Yum . Just not to often 🙂
Wee xx
Back on tablet
Wow JoJo if you can post a recipe for the skins would great.
But don’t be surprised if people shriek. Lol.
Especially the carrot skins. They are cancer fighters! Not cancer preventers , FIGHTERS! Unlike baby carrots that just mainly sugar.
For the citrus peels I scrape off the color , Zest them. I use the zest in the bottom off my slow cooker to give fish a nice lime lemon or orange citrus kick. If cut in half make a nice little cup for jello.
I only eat the inside fruit on feed days.
So the zest and the remaining white pith I save for fast days.
Lately been smearing with stevia and eating plain raw.
But your right JoJo. The pith would be wonderful say in chicken soup?
I believe. I havvent looked up in 6 months that the pith is about 35 calories and completely edible.
It’s one of foods that has not been researched much, but I see plainly that pith has more health properties than the juicy fruit.
I’m doing terrible job making my case?
I’ll copy and paste this little nugget.
Citrus fruits such as oranges have long been known as a high flavonoids-content diet. Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants that can protect our body against a wide range of diseases, including cancer and heart disease.
Although the citrus fruit itself has flavonoids content, but the highest concentration of flavonoids was found in the pith of the orange (the white part between the fruit and the peel) – which means you should eat the fruit with the white pith to get the maximum flavonoid effects.
One of the most powerful substances in the flavonoids are naringenin, which is found in all citrus fruits and tomatoes. Research has shown that the naringenin in citrus fruits can inhibit tumor growth by repairing damaged DNA.
A study conducted on mice found that the naringenin can also help in burning excess fat by stimulating liver metabolism. In fact, the weight of obese mice decreased when fed with naringenin. In addition to that, naringenin also increase levels of HDL (good) cholesterol and decrease levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol in animal studies.
There are many positive health benefits contained in the orange pith, so do not peel off the white part of the orange whenever you want to eat it.
Ordinary foods that shrink tumers. As to prevent or fight cancer with every meal.
Just so happens that many of those foods are perfect for fast days.
One benefit of fasting to remember is once we run out of dietary fuel. The body typically goes into DNA repair mode. I continue to to research and make menus to make fast days. Food Healing days.
Hi FTs
I’m surprised about the discussion re peeling veg and fruit. I have never peeled any (ok bananas, pineapples, avocados, mangoes. ..must be a tropical fruit thing). Even potatoes just get scrubbed. My soup is simply any veg I can find, rinsed, chopped and cooked, stems and all. I don’t blend it either, as I think the texture is important. I even roast onions whole in their skins. I originally did this as I am a lazy cook, but then, many years ago, learnt the vitamin benefits and used it as my justification 😉
We eat quite different food now to pre 5:2, but not because we ‘have to’ or are depriving ourselves, but because we crave different things (see RT’s article) and have revitalised our menu with some wonderful exciting new taste sensations. I love experimenting with food so this wol really suits. Cheers all, P
On the subject of skin… I grow a lot of my own produce and am happy to eat the whole as I know it’s organic. However, I must admit i wouldn’t necessarily eat the skins of shop bought fruit and veg unless organic. Nothing to do with nutrient levels, everything to do with pesticide and herbicide residue…
Re: broccoli and cauliflower stalks, asparagus offcuts (in season!) also go in soups….
Smiffy I haven’t got Bovril but really enjoy a sachet of miso soup on fast days for “lunch”, I think it’s the saltiness that I find satisfying.
SAMM now I know why our Melbourne possums ruin our lemons while still on the tree, the little buggers often eat off all the peel and leave the rest….they obviously know what’s good for them! Must add some stevia for them!
Possums are protected here in Aus, unlike NZ (think I am correct, as I have some lovely warm possum gloves, made in NZ) and wreak havoc in our gardens. They love roses too! Tangatiwi (sorry if spelling wrong) would know.
The discussion about marmalade was hard for me on fast day yesterday…. I love the stuff! Make it from my cumquat tree and also a little navel orange tree planted 5 yrs ago that produced 20 oranges last year. Not quite sweet enough yet but perfect for marmalade…. Heaven on some nice toasted sourdough! And I wonder why I have a weight problem! Thank goodness for 5:2!!
