  • Hi RT, thanks for posting that article, it is very interesting. I’ve taken the liberty of posting the link on another thread, the author of which is sceptical of Michael Moseley’s claims regarding the health benefits of fasting.

I discovered this link while permanently deleting my email delete file. It’s a year old, but the content still holds good. It contains nothing most of us don’t know already, but it could be useful if any of us are confronted by some idiot who asks us why, AT OUR AGE, we aren’t just sitting at home in our cardies watching daytime TV.

It’s chucking it down here in North London. Our office is a loft conversion so you can hear the rain thudding on the fanlights. As the French say so picturesquely: “Il pleut comme la vache qui pisse.”

Thanks, RT. Interesting and convincing article.

Hope you are feeling a bit better, jojo. If you’re at home in bed or on the sofa, you couldn’t be in a better place. Hope you’ve got something nice to read, watch or listen to.

    Hi Hermaj
We’ve had heavy rain too, but it has stopped now. It has been a pretty miserable day weather wise. I hope it is better tomorrow.

Interesting article, maybe it’s not too late for piano lessons after all!

SAMM thanks pal for all the information .
    Interesting article Hermaj .

I try to keep my mind active as much as I can .Amazon I don’t know about piano lessons though :).

Because of there being so many people in my Family with Alzheimer’s I feel I have to try and keep an active mind .
To be honest my mind never seems to calm down , even when I go to bed .

Had a lovely day with quite unexpected visitors ( Eldest son and lovely Daughter in Law ) Great company and also helped me with my BTB fasts .

Been a right cold wet miserable day today .The kind of day to be happy to stay indoors .

    Wee xx

I’ve been sorting out clothes for my holiday, which has been very satisfying as everything I want to take fits and there are another six fast days between now and when I go 😛

Good morning fellow fasters. Lots going on since yesterday (for me).

RT great article as is the one from Hermaj … going back to book mark both of those shortly.

Amazon great results and feelings I’m sure … that’s an awesome outcome with more happy ones to come with six more fast days to come 🙂

Yesterday turned out quite different weather wise … from reasonably warm and dry to down right chilly and wet for a while then back to dry but still cool. Coming after a really warm day it’s no wonder people get sick at this time of the year. When we got home yesterday we had phone calls and visitors through to late evening so another busy busy day. I didn’t worry too much about what I ate, although I didn’t eat overly much so pleased with myself for that as portion control or just having tasters rather than the whole thing is kicking in nicely now.

Jojo I hope that you’re on the mend now and that everyone else is fit and well.

    Catch up soon 😛

Amazon! Be careful! Another 6 fast days to go… At the rate you’re losing weight, by the time you get on the plane the clothes that you fit you now could be tents 🙂

I’m not so sure about that 😆
I have had my first really bad day in almost 13 weeks and eaten far more than my TDEE, but I have decided that I don’t care! I’ve worked very hard so far and one day won’t ruin it all. B2B fasts tomorrow and Monday will get me back on track.

Amazon I am sure 1 day will be fine you have been brilliant and you know exactly how your body works too . I bet you look just as fantastic as you feel pal .

    Wee xx

Hi Wee. I feel great, and on any other diet of which there have been many, if I’d had a day like today I would be feeling very unhappy and thinking about giving it all up because I’d failed, but the truth is it really doesn’t matter so long as get back on track tomorrow. I am determined to reach the 2 stone loss before I go away and I know I can do it.
    Thanks for your support X

Hi Amazon, I think that’s a good attitude. One day’s relaxation does not result in you waking up at pre 5:2 weight. At worst it may slow weight loss, at best you won’t even notice 🙂

My experience of intermittent fasting has been that I’ve been liberated from overeating/ carb addiction habits. So when I have ‘one of those days’ I go with it (it’s not habit or addiction, it’s my body telling me something).

And of course it’s part of maintenance, managing eating and calorie consumption. You eat a bit more one day, you eat a bit less the next…

If I wasn’t already at maintenance, you’d definitely be one of my role models 🙂

Morning fast friends the article is full of information and links to other hip techno caper 😯 and if its raining cats and dogs Amazon 😆 or is chucking it down herm that is a new term for rain for me you would be doing yourself a favour by watching the video interview with Dr Krista Vardy and Dr Mercola its different from her cameo with Dr M in Eat Fast & Live Longer it really is good
    Peace
    RT

“If I wasn’t already at maintenance, you’d definitely be one of my role models”

Stop it! I’m not used to all these compliments 🙂

My body was telling me to get rid of all the processed carbs in the freezer 😉
I don’t think I was supposed to eat them all though…………..

Well Amazon, tough love… You’re fantastic!

You’re still in weight loss mode but getting your head round maintenance. And iimportantly you recognize that with intermittent fasting there is no failure (I over ate today, I might as well jack it in and eat cake…). It’s just one day in your life.

Of course, having said that, and if it makes you feel better..! You’re not unique in being amazing here. Jojo, Weemam, SAMM, the maintainers and nearly at maintenance, those currently on a plateau but sticking with it, the relative newbies, etc etc….

To be honest I feel a bit of a fraud here! There weren’t many weeks, if any, when I lost 2lbs…!

After another big walking/gardening day yesterday,we both slept in today (it IS Sunday) and my husband is actually still asleep. But he will be woken any minute by my cackling at all these funny posts! Amazon, that’s the best ….. Eating those carbs in the freezer because your body said you had to!

That is a good article RT, thanks. Asked Mr Google about the author and he seems a well respected guy too. It will take time, but I am sure all this “new” knowledge will trickle thru to mainstream eventually.

Keeping your link til after breakky Hermaj, my body is telling me it wants muesli and blueberries!

Amazon I know just what you mean pal .This WOL is not hard work and I KNOW you can do it too 🙂

Happynow that’s what I think too , works in with the way we feel each day x I haven’t lost 2 pounds every week either but I am loosing every week and if and when I stop loosing pounds and I know I am doing it right Then I know I will still be loosing inches .

I also know that ALL of the people on this thread have my back and will keep me on the right track

You are all brilliant and thank you

    Nama
my body says it wants ice cream but it will just have to wait util tomorrow now . I promised it some and I always keep a promise wink wink 🙂

    Wee xx

    Morning all.

The dry weather has returned and the wind has dropped. I can see some blue sky but no sunshine yet.

I’m having a cup of tea and then I’m going to start working off yesterday’s calories 😉

    Have a good day/evening everyone 😛

    Good morning FastTrackers,
Back in the world of the living, bruised but not broken. I have had two good nights sleep albeit sitting up because the cough did not allow verticity(that word is for you Hermaj). My ribs are bruised, my stomach weak but my brain now functioning again, when not interrupted by constant sneezing. I sound like a 90 year old long term smoker, not pleasant. No gym for me this week. Definately lost my mojo for a while.

I felt I had to comment on your posted article Hermaj. As you know I play lawn bowls with some very active octogenarians often that have serveral medical issues. Some have very poor memory skills whilst others are sharp as razors.during my recent holiday I spent a great deal of time with a lady who plays games on her phone and does suduko and crosswords at every spare minute. I might add that she still does a cleaning job three morning per week to keep her car on the road( financially) Also she manages the bar and cafe at her bowls club. She had 6 children and countless grandchildren and now great grandchildren. She had her first child when she was 16. She did not have an easy life by any means, three different partners. Travelling with her was like being with a teenager and their game boy. However I cannot deny that she coped very well at 86, walking miles, dancing for hours, chatting non stop on a variety of subjects. She was also a team skip and accomplished bowler. The only areas she lacked confidence was directions both in the hotel, town and airport. New locations and routines were very difficult for her so I supported her. I don’t think she has had much opportunity or finances for travel.

If I compare my bowls group to my yoga group I find that the yogis are generally are better off both physically and mentally, generally 10 years younger on average but a few at top end of age range, high 80’s. I have been on holiday with both groups in the last month. Obviously I now need to find out what individual members do for mental stimulation, I know many are in book groups but I don’t think this complies with the article. I am going to investigate this, it should be interesting.

I think I may talk to the members of my book group too, all fairly inactive physically but definitely more active in the persuit of knowledge via historical societies and cultural interests, let no museum go un visited, no exhibit not fully explored.

I have chatted with most members in these groups and cannot recall anyone taking on new skills to challenge their brains.

I have focused my efforts in the last year upon physical and social persuits although I dabble in ‘ learning Spanish’ and ‘learning dance steps’. I am very keen to learn new skills and enjoy challenges. I am now thinking that I should focus on mental stimulus more, so long as it does not involve essay writing. I enjoy playing cards so I may consider a bridge club.

Now back to the point, I stupidly got on the scales this morning, I definately was not ready for that post holiday onslaught. Up 7 lbs. I know this will go quickly but honestly I think I must give up holidays. I put the gains down to alcohol, milky coffee and breakfast since I skipped lunch and had a very small evening meal( no pud). I only had one ice cream all week and as you all know I was very, very active every day and evening. I have spent the last three days sucking cough pastils which probably hasn’t helped but I have only eaten soup and omelette. This really worries me, as soon as I stop 5:2 I put on a pound per day, it’s crazy, I don’t think I will ever be on maintenance. I still have over 3 stone to go but this could take forever if I put on at that rate every social event. I need a good telling off guys to get me back on track.
I am vegetarian and carb free what more can I do? I don’t exceed 1200 on non fast days, the future is looking pretty grim today. I did have a fantastic holiday but the price is steep in weight control.
I am determined to keep going but I cannot say that for me ‘this is easy’ it’s bloody hard work. Luckily I have the rest of you to inspire me. Keep on losing, one day at a time.

Hi Jojo, glad to hear you are on the road to recovery.

I remember you saying that your GP can find no medical reason why you can only eat such a low number of calories or you put on weight, and this may seem a daft question to ask a live wire like you, but have you had a thyroid function test?

Fingers crossed you’ll be fully fit in a few days and the weight will start dropping off again.

    Hi Amazon,
Two test no problem with Thyroid, just a crap system for burning calories.
I wish there was a solution but 5:2 best answer so far.

    Hi jojo,

Thanks for the long and thoughtful post, especially at a time when you are a poor sick bunny. Your experience of mature people still in there pitching with their various skills and interests more than bears out the findings of the article.

I have to confess I also found the findings a bit frightening. As you know I’m awaiting the results of a Master’s degree which I’ve almost certainly done enough to pass, although to pass with Merit would be nice. Whether it happens is in the lap of the gods (or rather the profs). Whatever the result, it’s been a marathon for the mind. At this stage in my life, a post-grad degree makes no difference to my career prospects, although it has already impacted very favourably on my work as an Arts & Media translator, which is in itself a constant brain teaser. I can now understand far more clearly the burblings of arty-farty types across Europe.

However, what scared me about this research project was that the activities in which the subjects of the research were set to do all involved either numerical skills, manual dexterity and lateral thinking. Even in my youth, young adulthood and middle age I was rubbish at all of those.

As I may have mentioned before, during teacher training we were given a test to assess our musicality. I scored very high and when I asked the tutor how come I was so hopeless at playing musical instruments – especially the piano – her immediate response was poor coordination. The lady was spot on. What I’m saying is that if I had been one of the people in the research project, clumsiness and innumeracy would have put me at the “daft old biddy” end of the spectrum.

About those 7 lbs you appear to have acquired over the last couple of weeks, my heart goes out to you. If it makes you feel any better, my record is a stone in four days when I was only in my 20s. During a holiday in Portugal in August, i.e. when the weather was too hot to eat much of anything, I inflated like a balloon. Two of my travelling companions lost a few pounds, one stayed the same. It was almost certainly severe fluid retention.

Whatever the reason, don’t beat yourself up. I’m not one of the “get a grip, pull yourself together” school of thought. I’ve been on the receiving end of such advice too many times. Losing weight is, as you say, bloody hard work, and anyone who says it’s easy – usually a stick insect who has never had to diet in his or her life – needs a kick up the jaxy.

You are obviously very unwell at the moment and understandably feeling pessimistic. Your first priority at the moment is to get well again. Might the apparent weight gain have something to do with your illness, i.e. could your nasty flue-y cold be causing fluid retention?

Also your family concerns have put you under a lot of stress. Isn’t there some sort of mechanism whereby stress can make a person put on weight irrespective of what they eat? I’m no scientist – my dyspraxia saw me thrown out of all the science classes where I was costing the school a fortune in busted test tubes and I was also good at knocking over bunsen burners 🙂 – but there are quite a few among us who can probably explain.

My instinct says, why not “coast” a bit? As you say, you are doing your utmost with both diet and exercise but for some reason some bugger up there has decided to stop it working, at least for the time being. Could it be that you are TOO tough on yourself? Maybe ease off for a week or two, your instinct and your stomach will stop you going completely bonkers.

You are already a beautiful woman, even with 3 stone to go. Why not bask in your glory until you and your body are ready to return to the fray? xxx

hermaj, what a kind and thoughtful message to Jojo. I couldn’t have put it anywhere near as well as you have done, so all I can do is agree wholeheartedly, and bow to your eloquence 🙂

    Hi all.

So glad you are still warm and vertical Jojo and obviously getting some energy back. Far be it from me to tell you how to diet, but I think Hermaj is on the right track. Obviously devastating to put weight back on, but you are right yourself, you probably shouldn’t have gotten on the scales just yet. I don’t know scientifically if being unwell could upset your weight loss, but on an instinctive level I feel strongly that it must have an effect. You may not have been eating, but you haven’t been moving much either, apart from the coughing!

And apart from all the scientific stuff about BMR, TDEE etc, we are all individuals and use our food differently. My theory is that those of us on this thread, that have all had problems with our weight, have very efficient ‘engines’ and get every ounce of energy out of what we eat! Even before the modern day epidemic of obesity related to lifestyles and processed food, way back, there were always fatties and thin people.
We fatties are just a bit unlucky in that area and it requires hard work to keep thin. But aren’t we lucky that Michael Mosely did his research!

Still looking forward to reading your article Hermaj, just home (11pm here) and will save it to read in peace tomorrow. Just had to put my two bobs worth in for Jojo, who has obviously given a lot of real support to others on this thread, now it’s payback!

    Hi Jojo
Hope your health is continuing to improve. My advice (for what it’s worth) is similar to others’: Relax, rest, keep warm, be kind to yourself and build up your strength. Forget about weight loss till your body is ready again.

Hermaj – do you not practise Tai Chi? You have a handy instructor, after all. All martial arts are excellent for improving coordination because they engage the two sides of the brain, using many movements that cross the midline. Ask OH, he’ll confirm that. You have to stick at it though. No telling yourself you’ll never get it right. That’s the enemy. In fact, we should be careful about calling ourselves any negative names. It sounds to me as if you were given those ‘clumsy’ and ‘no good at maths’ labels as a child. So many were told that by so called ‘teachers’ back then when all they needed was more time or a different approach. Bad enough that they did that to you back then. Don’t do it to yourself.

Lizzypb (who always means well 🙂 )

    JoJo you’ll be just fine!
The lbs must be from inflammation due to the cold or flu.
I never feel like exercising when I have the cold or flu , but I do it anyway. Not HIIT though!
Then a lot of rest and hydration.

I also take the zinc lozenges to boost the immune system , but don’t believe it helps lose weight. Other than feeling upto fasting sooner.

I also know it sounds silly , but I eat salsa when I have the cold, the salt probably retained water weight, but my experience is I tend to burn more fat when I have a cold. In weight lifting circles many conversations about going low sodium means that they feel weak. I experimented with myself and when I eat sals that is low calorie but high sodium. I do feel strong enough to skip rope or do jumping jacks without feeling completely exhausted.

    BRAIN CALLISTHENICS

Keep some of the phone numbers not on the phone but in the memory-tip. Use phone numbers as passwords. That you change often. This helps to memorize many numbers. Fast

    Create art every day
    Create music every day
    Do difficult math every day
Exercise often especially walking – the left side of the brian the subconscious is more active when in motion. Like when the theory of relativity was conceived during a stroll rather than siting at a table!
    Practice hand eye coordination
    DHA foods of course
Good to bed early enough that when you wake up without alarms .
Keep the same sleep cycle 7 days a week and a twenty min nap every afternoon. No more no less

Lizzy, thank you for what seems an obvious solution to my problem. Sadly, though, it hasn’t worked for me. It’s accepted as a bad idea to have a spouse or relative teach you to drive. The same seems to apply to Tai Chi and the potentially less difficult Qi Gong.

I have tried to no avail. I instantly forget the sequences, some of the stances actually make me feel quite sick and/or dizzy, I constantly trip over my own feet and I can’t tell left from right. This doesn’t only apply to Tai Chi. To work out left from right, I still have to do a little mime of holding a knife and fork, sometimes several times a day. And heaven help anyone who asks me for directions.

It has led to some fairly violent shouting matches – I’m quite good at those. Whatever the skill, my OH always reckons his way is the best and everyone else on the planet is wrong. And I’m wronger than most.

I took some comfort from my acupuncturist who has also become a good friend. She’s a Brit but she studied in China and has practised Chi/Qi Gong. She told me how they are regarded as an essential part of the treatment offered to patients in many mainstream Chinese hospitals. She has also assured me that I am not alone. There are people who just don’t get it. They are tend to be those able to work with, in and around their mental capacities but physically are as good as useless.

Certainly, the labels were stuck on me as a kid and attempts were made, quite literally, to beat them out of me. But even now I AM bad at figures. I even mistranslate numbers expressed in words. So much so that my most regular clients know to check any reference to numbers in my translations. What keep me from total innumeracy are the multiplication tables which I still remember. But sure as hell even if I get a correct result I write it down wrong. And thank God for the word processor and the spellchecker. Working on a conventional typewriter I must have been Tippex’s best customer.

Thanks again for trying to help. In some respects I’m a basket case. Thankfully there are a few things I am really good at. You may remember that, according to some, I endlessly boast about myself. 🙂

    Thanks Guys,
There are several factors that have caused the weight gain, too many pain killers which always effect my system, drinking alcohol( don’t usually) and drinking milky coffee(only do this on holiday). Last holiday in September I gained 6 lbs and lost it with a week. It always seems to be the way, quickly gained, quickly lost. But it does take the edge off enjoying a holiday.
Hermaj, one stone in 4 days sounds horrendous, that definately beats 7 lbs in 5 days, we were travelling the other two days and I did not exceed 1200. I am off to Ireland later this month for 4 days, I will not drink alcohol or coffee, let’s see what happens.

Meanwhile I will get back to calorie counting and walking 10,000 steps daily. Fast day tomorrow, should be easy as I have been on soup diet for the last three days.
I do believe in Fasting but for me I have to combine this with non fast days of 1200. I don’t eat processed food, carb(pasta, rice, bread)or meat, this helps me manage the low calorie count more easily. I do eat eggs and cheese plus quinoa, chickpeas and beans(in small quantities). Special treats I eat seafood or sea trout. I particularly like spicey stir frys, soups and curries. This makes the diet tolerable.

My favourite foods – pastry and bread will never feature in my long term healthy eating plan and I have accepted it, like giving up cigarettes I needed to make healthier options part of my life.

Is there anyone on here dairy free? My daughter is adapting to this now, to improve her complextion, can you suggest good recipes or reading – she is a long term vegetarian that doesn’t eat fish either. She does eat meat replacements such as soya and tofu plus eggs.

Update on my brother in law, in a cardiac unit and making progress but no news on his operation. It’s sad that I can’t visit him yet but I suspect this virus would finish him off. I will need to be absolutely healthy before I visit and I suspect this cough will take a week or so to clear up.

As you say I haven’t been my usual active self although I still managed to do a short walk with my dogs, no steps or hills but I am sure the fresh air is good for me, blow away the cobwebs and a few germs. I won’t do my dance or yoga class tomorrow but I will attemp bowls and badminton even if I only manage one game.

I may do some research on memory improving activities – if I knew my own mobile number it would be a start.

    Love Jojo xx

    Hi jojo,

I’m dairy-careful rather than dairy-free. After years of being offered counselling for what was assumed to be a psychlogical problem, i.e. feeling sick and miserable far too often, I was diagnosed as lactose intolerant. Fortunately, I don’t have to avoid dairy altogether, just be careful not to overdo it. I soon find out if I have. 🙁

My first suggestion for your daughter is this. In dishes that usually involve minced meat, things like chili con carne, shepherd’s or cottage pie, moussaka, spag bol, etc., soy mince (known chez His and Hermaj as “cardboard mince”) or chunkier soy pieces work brilliantly. Even without the mince, all these work well with veg only. In fact, you’ve just decided for me what I should cook for dinner tonight. A nice veggie curry – no cardboard mince needed – , not quite vegan if you have a bit of Greek yogurt with it.

I’ve still got a couple of grease-stained, falling-to-bits, vegan cookery books from my hippy days. I never went vegan but I used to cook for several who had. At least one recipe book came from the Vegan Society, which could be worth contacting. http://www.vegansociety.com/

If her wish to stay off dairy is due to lactose intolerance, lactose-free milk, both fresh and longlife is available at Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, even M&S. Lactofree cheese is not very nice raw but cooks well. I haven’t so far tried lactofree yoghurt or cream.

Hope that helps. Glad you are feeling perkier. I’d still say don’t go leaping about too much until you are a bit further down the road to recovery. After all you want to be bug-free so that you can go and see your brother-in-law – fingers and everything crossed for him, too. Hope you had the same lovely sunny afternoon we had here. Even a trip to Sainsbury’s – walk there bus back, no way was I walking with heavy bags – was a pleasure.

You made me smile about your mobile number. I don’t even know where mine is. I have embraced new technology almost wholeheartedly, but for some reason I hate mobiles with a passion and only carry one when absolutely essential.

Today’s FD meal was kedgeree. I cooked two pieces of salmon yesterday, so I use the remaining one with 1oz of rice, onion, garlic, chillies, curry powder, mushrooms, a few peas and a soft boiled egg. It was fab and came in at just over 400 calories, which left enough for a tsp of mango chutney 🙂

I’ve recently invested in 2 non stick pans, a small one for one portion dishes and omelettes and a larger one for everything else. They are fab 😛

    Hiya everyone .

Just home from taking Dad out then we went to Ross as he had a new piece of furniture delivered and I was nosy and wanted to see it in situ . It is really smart .

    Lovely day but cold .
Hermaj I don’t know if I told you but Ross did Tai Chi and Qi Gong. It helped his balance quite a bit with him having CP. But he wants to be independent now he has his own place and he now goes to karate about 200 yards from his home lol.

Jojo I am so pleased you are feeling a bit better BUT please be careful and not try to do too much too soon .

Hello to everyone else too . I have had 3 fast days this week so look forward to my weigh in tomorrow . even a pound a week mounts up . We are all doing so well . You all keep me going and thank you ALL for that

    Wee xx

    Hi Jojo,

Glad to hear you are up and about, albeit a bit fragile for a while.

Re: dairy free. I am not. And I’m not even a vegetarian, although meat features less and less. I don’t know if you’ve come across ‘A Modern Way to Eat’ by Anna Jones (a former pupil of Jamie Oliver). It’s vegetarian, with not much dairy or processed carb. I’ve only cooked maybe 10 or so of the recipes so far, but they’ve all been winners! And I hadn’t even noticed that some of them were vegan… 🙂 Even OH, a confirmed meat eater, could only find fault with one so far, the really hungry burger, because he was aware of the sweetness imparted by the addition of dates.

Thanks Happy Now and Hermaj, I will do some reading and checking out recipes for my daughter. Her doctor recommended going dairy free to get rid of long term acne problems. She is very self conscious yet she is very attractive and with a good foundation it is not visible. But as we all know diet is everything. I hope it works for her.
Thanks SAMM, you are a godsend.

Weemam, good luck my friend, you are still my heroine.

Hermaj – one of my friends has the same issues as you except she has fine maths skills, in fact became a maths teacher. She wears a hair scrunchy on her wrist when driving to remind her which is left enabling her to understand the sat nav.

I am going to write down my phone number five times every day, see how it goes.

Amazon – that meal sounds delicious.

Don’t worry about me everyone, I know my limits, been resting all day today. I have 2 workmen due one to fix my boiler tomorrow and toilet systern on Tuesday so lots of sitting at home waiting. That should ensure my ironing gets done. I spent today working on my family tree, it’s quite sizeable now.

Jojo so glad you’re feeling better, albeit not 100%. Hope your BIL improves too.

Hearing all this about numbers, words etc … in 1974 I worked in the mail exchange and had to learn postcodes … most of the darn things are STILL stuck in my head … if someone asks what’s the postcode for a suburb in SA usually I’ll pipe up with the right one!!!! Well most of them, particularly those around Adelaide and north, a few country ones as well. Regarding phone numbers I do know quite a few, but gave up on my sons as they kept changing every few months. Yes, I know both mine and OH’s mobile numbers, a few of our friends etc but am better with landline ones. Yes I seem to have good fine motor skills too and am quite dexterous. Having said all this I still worry about dementia as my darling Dad had that, Parkinsons etc prior to his death and I don’t want that if there’s anything I can do to prevent/delay it I will do it..

FD for me today … I need it after this past weekend, yesterday I overate but I know I’ll be fine today but will probably have FD, FD, semi-FD and FD for the rest of this week to counteract things.

Hermaj great advice for Jojo and very well written.

Hi to all those down under and up top hoping your days are filled with sunshine (either real or figuratively) 😛 😆

Good evening! I have just returned from a twenty four hour visit to Riverton- a small country town an hour and a half or so drive. I stayed with my cousin and we caught up with a mutual long standing friend from Darwin, the purpose of sharing this is that I had asked my cousin to join me on 5:2 – I had been encouraged to look at 5:2 following our friend’s twenty kilo plus success with this WOE when it first came out ( she has maintained) now my cousin has lost 7.9 kilos in four weeks to my three so whilst pleased for her I keep thinking it should have been me! No seriously, am delighted for her! I struggle at home so on weekends, after work I try to keep busy so I am not tempted to eat mindlessly. My solution yesterday was to whipper snip. As I live on the side of a hill it was not easy to say the least but when I had done all I could I certainly was not interested in snacking!
forgot to submit so best post and get my household up . It is a fast day for me so am taking advantage of staying in bed for awhile longer. The benefits of this WOL extra sleep and yard work!!! Emel

The long awaited painter is due to start tomorrow and the weather forecast is looking good until Friday. He is going to have to be finished by the 19th so I hope it stays dry.
I’ll have to be up early tomorrow to get my workout done before he arrives or I know I’ll not do it, especially as there is tennis to watch from noon.

I did a huge pile of ironing today. Not my favourite chore by a long way. I’ve also thrown out a few more items that were in the ironing pile but won’t be worn again. The car boot is full of clothes to be taken to the recycling centre. Clothing manufacturers should be giving Michael a share of their profits 😉

The kedgeree was very good, even if I say so myself. I’m trying really hard to increase my repertoire of low calorie meals to avoid FD boredom, which is a recipe for disaster.

    Hi AO and emel 🙂

    Emel,
Use your cousins success as a challenge, go girl! You can do it!
It takes a while to get into your stride and without a set time goal, it’s harder. Remember your goal is 2 lb per week, you will only get that if you are very strict.
I am back on board, join me, one week at a time.
    Jojo xx

Our goal is 12 lbs before Christmas, would that make you happy, that is a dress size down.

Yes jojo a dress size down would be wonderful and doable. My aim today is not to drink as much coffee as I have on previous fast days as I add milk but have not been counting it . Best go , glad you are feeling better – hi amazon I have only read about kedgeree! Glad you enjoyed it!

    Hi Emel,

I like my coffee also (latte/ milky). I don’t enjoy black coffee, but wasn’t prepared to give up my coffee on a fast day. So I started using almond milk in coffee, not quite the same as milk, but perfectly acceptable. And half the calories of semi-skimmed milk…

    Marmalade: High in antioxidants

    MARMALADE

Pectin, a natural gelling agent used to help marmalade and jam set, relieves constipation and sore throats, according to a study by the institute of Food Research. it’s also been found to inhibit tumour growth. Meanwhile, antioxidants in the citrus peel help lower levels of LDL cholesterol.

Marmalade also contains natural sugars, which are more beneficial than those found in most other preserves and jams. And with 20 times more antioxidants in 1g of marmalade than in your ordinary glass of orange juice, it could be a better choice.

‘Despite the recent trend to opt for honey  –  due to the well-publicised health benefits of the Manuka variety  –  marmalade is arguably healthier as it contains vitamins and antioxidants from the fruit,’ says Rebecca Foster of the British nutrition Foundation.

Many brands contain more than 50 per cent sugar, so if low-sugar versions aren’t available, be moderate

Just a quickie before my eyes give up completely…
My OH has been lactose intolerant for many years (I say he is just intolerant, but that’s a different matter 😉 ). He also went vegetarian a few years ago to overcome a high iron situation. He introduced lots of soy based products into his diet and gradually developed a significant intolerance to soy products. Observing his experience, I really feel we need to be very cautious about extremes of anything in diets.(I’m using the term ‘diet’ here to refer to what we eat, not a weight loss regime.) By having a good. well balanced range of foods, we are not stressing the body and developing allergies. Too much or too little of any food stuffs can result in undesirable consequences. They are even finding this in the introduction of solids to babies. In the past we introduced babies to the family food, straight from the table, in more recent years people have withheld certain foods for long periods. They are now finding this is probably leading to the rise in food allergies in kids.

My dear little grandmother, who lived a healthy life to 97, was a firm believer in simple, fresh, in season foods, prepared at home with love and care. She never ate out and did not eat processed foods. A small, sensible portion of a wide range of seasonal foods kept her fit and healthy all her long life.
I am trying to emulate her technique. Cheers all, P

    Hi everyone

Jojo, so glad you’re improving but I reiterate others’ advice about taking it slowly.

Hermaj, I laughed out loud when I read the French term for heavy rain and OH joined me when I told him. So colourful. Compliments on your eloquent advice to Jojo, you have such a good way with words. Who cares about the other stuff?

Emel, good thought about the coffee milk – it’s insignificant relative to food but those cal’s still mount up. I love milky coffee but don’t touch it on FDs and then REALLY enjoy my first of the week on Wednesday mornings when I get to my desk.

First of my usual Mon-Tu b2bs, so also sending positive e-vibes to fellow Monday fasters. Weigh-in again next Wednesday so will see if scales still stubbornly stuck (hope you like the alliteration 🙂 ) but waist another cm smaller, making a total of 18cm lost since the end of January ’14. Am hoping this is mostly visceral fat because still carrying unwanted spare tyre above my waistband. Now 6cm left before waist less than half height.

Keep up the good work everyone.

PS, Wee, sorry for ignorance, but what is CP?

sorry pal it is Cerebral Palsy

    Wee xx

    In reply to my friends,

I read and concur that in a perfect world we should eat seasonably, fresh and with variety but in my world exclusion leads me to weight loss. Sad but true. There have been many years of trying to lose weight with fresh and varied but it hasn’t worked for me. Amongst my friends I am the one who has always eaten the least chocolate, puddings, fatty foods, I am also the most active but guess what I am also the fattest. Hopefully this will not be the case by next Spring when I reach my goal weight.

One day there will be a test that will tell us what to eat to suit our individual needs but it may not be what we want to hear. For now we have to make ourselves guinea pigs and experiment until we discover what works for us. In my case low carb, no alcohol, no meat, minimum sugar.

How many of you are actually following Michaels original diet with no restrictions on non fast days? Not many I would hazard a guess. As for TDEE, I would definitely gain if I used mine as a guide, simply not viable, I cannot exceed 1200 cals per non fast day. Fact! I would be a very happy bunny if I could eat more without gaining. At the end of the day vegetarianism gives me the most food for the least calories and it’s healthy so therefore it’s a good choice. It just makes dieting easier and more economical. It doesn’t make eating out easier though, that is a fact. Just for your information I am not a big fan of soy, I prefer eggs, cheese, bean, nuts, lentils and quinoa with fish as a weekly treat. I am not ruling out becoming a vegan if it means I never have a long term issue with weight gain. I see few options at maintenance unless I spend 4 hours per day doing exercise.

I hope I don’t acquire allergies to foods I have cut out but I guess I have to accept that risk to succeed with my goal to be 10 stone( not an unreasonable goal for my height and age, top end of my ideal weight range).

I value your opinions and advice and am willing to try anything to beat this weight problem that has effected the last 30 years of my life. I know many of you are coming to this same realisation. It’s not just about vanity but longevity and ensuring the little grey cells are looked after. The fact is we will be happier without weight problems and our bodies will thank us for less stress to our joints and organs.

Samm – I love marmalade but it’s best on toast, no longer on my agenda. Enjoy it though. I think I once had a marmalade cake that was good too.

    We can do this together.

    Sleep tight, dream light

    Jojo xx

    Hello Fast friends
I’ve off the thread for a time now.
I have gone through the posts for the past week. Sorry JoJo about the accumulation of problems. I was grateful two or three weeks ago to some of you who suggested I go easy for a while. I see Hermaj has suggested this to you too. I thoroughly agree.

For brain stimulation, I do Coursera courses. These are free online courses. I am doing one I love on song writing, and I did one on logic. That had my brain going.
I know of two organizations running these Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs)- Coursera and Edx. Maybe there are others.

I survived my 30 hour flight to New Zealand.
I ate no carbs or sugars on airline meals. I drank only water and a lot of it.
I fitted comfortably into the airline seats. The best flight in years across the world. We took homeopathic no jet-lag tablets and the day after arriving, we walked 12km over a couple of Wellington hills and I began the ADF again immediately.
The compliments about my new silhouette have been very pleasant.

I put on a bit during the last stressful week in Europe, but ready for another summer and summer food.

It is wonderful to be home again!

I dreamt about you last night, Hermaj. It was a pleasant dream.
Please forgive me for not mentioning everyone, but I will get into the rhythm again quickly.

    xx TW

PS- to the the South Australians, we flew over Adelaide the other morning and it looked lovely from 10K metres. I am keen to visit your state and it is the only Aussie state I’ve not been to.
    Dream on…

    Hi Jojo
I’ve been at the physio getting work on my lower back..now hitting the drugs…so I couldn’t reply earlier. You will be asleep by now. I agree totally with you, Jojo. We all need to find our way in this. Vegetarian is the choice I make most days, too, as it fills and doesn’t fatten. I also realise I can never eat much more than 1200 cals for the rest of my life, as well as doing 2 fasts a week.

As a result of my eye problems this last week, I haven’t been able to read the thread properly. I hope you didn’t think I got the wrong end of the stick. I was making a general comment about allergy development as OH has just had the allergy test done to identify which he is more allergic to. I just know from bitter experience that he gets carried away with eating too much of, or radically restricting, whole food groups and, as a result, developed intolerances to them.

My son is a vegan and manages it very well. He has gone from a chubby boy to a lanky man. But he tries to have a healthy diet within the vegan range. And I have cut most carbs out of our diet as it seems to be the way forward for us, but I haven’t excluded them totally as that is possibly when the problem arises, I think.

Just food for thought on a fast day. Cheers P

    Wiwi..
Glad you arrived safely in NZ. Well done on the successful negotiation of airline food. Not easy on that long haul flight.
Enjoy being home in Wellington, flaunting your new bod! P

Hi Jojo Winston Churchill says success is not final failure is not fatal it is the courage to continue that counts….. you keep shining bright like a diamond !!!
For ALL the aussie fasters make sure to set the telly for a reminder on Thursday night at 8pm for a Catalyst special (low carb diet fact or fiction?)
I am quite sure we all have our own opinion on that old chestnut.
    Happy Monday Fast friends
    Peace
    RT
