Penz, there is no reason at all that you couldn’t cross your one foot over the other while doing the planks – many do one legged planks (some even with weighted discs on their back (no, not me – no, never ever ).

Day 9, Rocky Mountains, US, FD 800 cals
Hi everyone,
Thank you for the warm welcome back @songbirdme, @metatauta, @happymargo, @annemarilyn, @awilson, @at, @coda, @flourbaby: alas no more Sachertorte for now 😄😄😄, and @strawberriesandcream. Thank you for welcoming me to the January Challenge @mjrbcd44. Hope you feel better soon.
FD yesterday went well. I do 800 cals FDs Mon-Fri, then CDs over the weekend.
SW February 2017: 140 pounds
CW January 2017: 128 pounds
GW back to where I was before my extended vacation: 118
So 10 pounds to go. Hope to accomplish this January and February.
I signed up for Tai Chi Mon and Wed and Yoga Tue and Thurs. The classes go until the end of April. This will be my exercise besides walking my dog. Hiking will be on my agenda again in spring.
I also like to join to the no sugar group. Alcohol and sugar free January! I quite likely will extend this into February!😊😊😊
Have a good Tuesday everyone! 🌺🌻🌼
Day 9 Wales NFD
Hi everyone,
I’m enjoying the news from Peru @daffodil2010
@saffy420 so sorry to hear you’ve picked up another cold – get well soon, you too @toddybear, I caught my virus either in Fuerteventura or on the plane coming home.
@fatfingers – thanks for the recipe, sounds good and @strawberriesandcream I hadn’t heard of coconut flour before, very interesting and opens up new options that will fit in with my Mediterranean diet.
Its a dull damp day here today so I’ve been flicking through travel brochures and a walking holiday in Provence has caught my eye – beautiful photos of sunflowers and lavender fields…….and yes, French bread, cheese and red wine…..which reminds me, hope you Dry Januarians are feeling good and strong.
I keep forgetting to drink enough water, so I’m off to fill my glass.
Canada day 8 NFD
So many great posts to catch up on, congratulations to everyone who is loosing and trying!
@bert1802 I’m getting into Flylady routines. A bit crazy but it works
Second post
@saffy420 I made that too and really enjoyed it and so did OH even though he’s not so hot on vegetables. The Sunday Times also ran a feature with a couple of recipes of his which I will try. Here’s the link if anyone’s interested.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/one-layer_lasagne_53097
@ Bert1802 I loved your comment, ‘I was done.. stick a fork in me done.’ It made me laugh out loud. You’re not having much luck with your fellow workers are you?
@penz if you had a Swiss Ball, you could put your ankles and feet on the ball and plank from there and you wouldn’t put pressure on your toe at all. There are lots of You tube videos showing technique.
@songbirdme – I used to have a robin that came in through my patio doors and eat out of your hand. However puppy has put a stop to that.
Wow @lindasue, you’re on fire!
Thanks for the recipe @fatfingers and @strawberriesandcream
Onwards and downwards!💪💪💪💪
Me again !
Welcome back, Red Rock Girl. Sounds like you are in great shape.. pun intended.
__
Thanks to the posters for the recipes. Will try them both. I am getting cabbage to make stuffed cabbage rolls so the coleslaw will give me something else to use the rest of the cabbage for. The lasagna sounded great as well!
Day 10 NFD
Start Weight 81.4 kg
Current Weight 79.5 kg
Had quite a bad day yesterday NFD wise. Had two large crossiants with cheese for lunch.. At 250 calories each! A whole FD worth of food. Anyway as I just cant help weighing in every day I weighed in this morning and I have stayed the same. So I will try and be better today as tommorow is another FD and Friday is official weigh in write down weight day.
Got my husband into doing this too. Just got him to watch Eat Fast Live Longer and he was keen. He only started this week and you can already see he is looking skinnier on his sides (love handles).
Day 9, Gozo, Malta, fd
Today I’m eating more near 1,000 calories. I nibbled on baked onions I with olive oil as extras and I’m eating a spicy warm fruit salad which I baked and is delicious. It comes around 188 per portion but I added fruit and more orange and apple juice. I also made corn fed chicken in broth and it was delicious I’m still serving some broth with vegetables and a little pasta this evening.
My husband told me to forget fasting today as he opened a Sicilian olive and chilli in oil. But as long as he had a couple of olives I told him we’re still fasting.
Tomorrow is another fast day. It will be below 800 calories this time.
Have a great evening everyone. Onwards and downwards.
Day 9 McMinnville Oregon USA – NFD
I’ve decided to try the Blend Challenge that @flourbaby mentioned in December. I’m not sure how to classify it because it’s not a FD but it is well below my TDEE. I’m going to try it for a couple of days and see what I think and then reassess.
I tried a plank yesterday and managed 30 seconds. 😩 Used to be able to do 2 minutes before rotator cuff surgery. It’s time to get back at it.
@daffodil2010 – I googled Colca Canyon and it looks stunning. How fun
@basyjames – Congrats on being a finalist in your “Maintain don’t gain” challenge.
Day 9, UK, NFD
Hello everyone,
I think I caught the cough/cold thats going around 😷, so annoying. Lucky I don’t have work today so I can stay on my sofa and drink camomile tea and hot water with lemon, trying to recover. Due to that my appetite is not great at the moment, which is not a bad thing 😜 .
I could do with some of your chicken broth now @anna6 😀
Well done for being a finalist @basyjames, keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Moving back to my sofa and some TV.
Have a great day everyone 🤗
ShinyThing I wish I can send you some of my delicious chicken broth. It’s so healing. Also easy to make. Just put some pieces of chicken with bone (I put half a chicken chopped into two), about three large carrots, five celery sticks chopped into small pieces, chicken boullion cube for every 500 milliliter water (I put three liters and 6 chicken cubes), bring to boil and let simmer for one hour and a half. Then put some small shaped pasta and continue to simmer for five minutes. I used corn fed chicken but regular chicken would do as well.
Good night 💤😴.
Day 9 – UK – FD
Lots of exercise today – a lovely brisk 4miles this morning, it was very cold just above freezing! I really enjoyed that cup of tea near a lovely open fire afterwards @coda!!! This evening I had an hour long HIT Pilates class – those plank sessions I have been doing definitely paid off!
A very good liquid only FD so far today, just enjoyed a bowl of homemade oven roasted tomato soup with spinach (only 112cals) and drinking lots of water with a few cups of tea with skimmed milk – will have a glass of my homemade kefir before bed – total of 245cals for the day 😊
@debster251 – love “the anticipation is often much more delightful than the real thing” quote – often so true…….
@daffodil2010 – thank you for sharing your Peru travels – hope the altitude does not bring any side effects – keep planking and posting! 😉
@elektron – one FD is better than none especially if your NFD were fairly well controlled – stay strong and positive
Sorry to hear that a few of you have come down with various bugs – drink plenty of water…….🤗
Life is good and I’m really looking forward to my trip to Australia if not the long flight starting on Sunday morning from here……
“You Can’t Cross The Sea Merely By Standing And Staring At The Water” meaning that you cannot expect your body to change by itself. You have to take the plunge, swim, drown, and float again until you reach your destination!
Day 9 California – maintaining NFD
Yesterday’s FD went well. I didn’t eat until lunch time today and then had a bowl of the Nigerian Red Kidney Bean Stew posted by Cinque in the Beans and lentils recipes thread. I made a big pot of it yesterday, enough to last several days, depending on how much OFM eat. I like it because it’s spicy (amount of which can be adjusted) and the fiber in the beans make it filling. It’s a NFD meal for me. Thanks for posting that, @cinque.
@redrockgirl302, welcome back from your travels and vacation! Good to see you here again.
@at, exercise is the one thing missing from my 5:2 weight loss journey. I really need to get into a regular routine. Getting started is the hardest…
Day 9 NFD Somerset UK
First week of this way of eating accomplished. The two FD were very good and the other weekdays not too bad but sadly at the weekend the eating gremlin took over and ate everything in sight (and even some things that weren’t!)
However I have lost 2lbs and learned that I can manage quite well without breakfast and on a lot less food.
I definitely need to get into the habit of posting every day, even if only to admit to myself that the day didn’t go quite as well as intended. I’m very much inclined to document my eating on the good days and head in the sand “forget” to log the one’s that are sabotaged.
Thanks to everyone for all the inspiring posts.
Day 9 – SW WA USA – FD
Doing a B2B; meaning business. Need to get things heading downward further.
@at – do you have a moment to flesh out your tomato soup recipe further before you head to Australia? It sounds yummy!
Together we are stronger!
Day 9 – Massachusetts – fd
Late post today. Some of you will be waking up soon! Accidentally unplanned Fd. Had intended on eating lunch, but was swamped with meetings from 10 am to 4 pm with no break for lunch! So I decided to take it and make it an unplanned b2b Fast! Surprising how easy that can be.
Thank you@AT for the info in kefir! Will be doing some reading. Also, water kefir? 🤨@Debster251 do you buy it or make it? I never knew there was such a thing! Will have to do yet more research! 🤓
Seems my cold has turned into bronchitis and I am still recovering unfortunately. Hopefully it will be gone by February. Once it has passed, I think I’ll be joining you guys on the plank challenge! those planks better watch out! 😠 until then, nothing left to do but carry on.
Remember, if you’re going through hell, keep going!
Day 10, CD, Norway
Not sure when i’ll end the fast, but i just did a successfull B2B 🙂 My fast started sunday evening..not sure what time…maybe at 9pm (no later anyhow), had 500kcals Monday at 5pm, and 500kcals Tuesday at 5pm. Now its Wednesday 7:15am, and maybe i’ll have some lunch, if not, dinner around 5pm.
I got a new phone yesterday, changed from Iphone to Huawei…LOTS to get used to, and i can’t get my Beurer scales to connect/update with the app on my new phone…really anoying, as i saw a new number this morning :):):) Gotta try some more pairing tonight.
Mari84 – congratulations on your all time low, and successful 40hour fast!!
Day 10, Cornwall UK, NFD
I’m jogging along on standard 5:2 and Med diet and this is a long marathon for me. I’ve been losing weight most weeks but my waist has stayed stubbonly at 105cm for the last month – its coming off my bum instead and making me more apple shaped! But yesterday, i finally saw another cm off my waist.
I reckon i was eating more carbs over xmas than i thought. I am trying to eat fewer carbs and more healthy fats but my brain is hard-wired to avoid fats because they are so high calorie. I have to trust that more-fat-less-carb is a good idea – i’ve restarted eating nuts and am still losing weight so i need to remember that!
I joined the plank challenge and (embarrased to admit) not done any yet, except in my yoga class! And we do flow-yoga so only hold the plank for about 15 seconds before moving on. Perhaps i should just commit to planks on fast days then i might do it…
Day 10 CD
Good morning 🌏🌈
Good day all round yesterday. Firstly City won (eventually) but the best result was me once again managing to avoid all the pitfalls of what I would normally eat when going to a football match.⚽️👍
1200 kcal for me today between breakfast and tea with a 5k run in between.🏃♀️🏃♀️
Everyone stay positive, stay safe and hope you have a good day wherever you are. 😀
@mjrbcd44 could I still join the forum this month?
Day 10, Newcastle UK, FD
Yesterday’s FD went well, although it was 800 vs my quarter TDEE at 460. However, a little reward this morning with a further .4lb dispatched. Surely I can shift a further 2.3lbs in the remaining 2.3 weeks left before our cruise. With carrot and coriander soup now prepared and some sourdough bread defrosting, I’m going for another FD today – probably around 800 again.
@missybear – apparently any type of nut flour is a lot lower in carbs. I’m going to find some almond flour and experiment with that. Can also use both together.
@saffy420 – I have also used my standard size cooker for many years but this new huge one has opened up a whole new world. Last night I made 6 individual egg custard desserts in ramekins – they look so pretty..
@anna6 – Spicy baked warm fruit salad – sounds yummy – please will you share the recipe. Is it something I could do in my slow cooker?
@emma-taylor – well done! I’m now 15 days AF and looking forward to my first ever AF holiday. I have a coupe of doubters but I’ll prove them wrong. No alcohol tastes as good as hangover-free feels.
Great progress being reported – we’re starting the year the way we mean to go on!
“Old ways won’t open new doors.”
Day 10, London, UK, FD (2nd of B2B2B)
@redrockgirl302, I’m only on this forum to live my life vicariously through others!!!!! I was soooo looking forward to stories of sachertorte almost as much as @daffodil2010’s news from Peru, @fatrabbit’s bunny adventures, @at’s fell running (OH only!!) and hands-on worldwide news!!!!!
@janejust, it’s shocking when you realise that eating mindlessly, which we all do, means you could quite easily consume a days’ worth of calories in one meal!!! Or as I discovered…………… 1 glass of Baileys & a single solitary handful of cashews!!!! I hate calorie counting, but it’s such an eye opener, I’ve yet to overestimate the cals in ANYTHING!!!
@awilson, I decided to get the entire programme of recipes 1st, prep, chop + freeze everything in handy portions (6am is NOT the time to chop anything!!) then incorporated the challenge into 5:2. As each smoothie is about 350cals I thought I would have 3-4 on a NFD and 2 on a FD then see how I feel. I usually work to a weekly calories deficit of 3600cals (4:3) so doing this as 5:2 works out the same. I’ll be starting next week………..good luck!!!
@basyjames, I’ve no idea what your hoping to win (a blue apron??!!) but I’m keeping everything crossed for you!!
@strawberriesandcream, those doubters have NO idea what’s coming their way……………………. You WILL show them, it’s exactly how I felt when the “you’re starving yourself”; “That can’t be good for you”: or, ”What do you mean you haven’t eaten for 40+ hrs” comments started!!!!!
Feeling more positive today after a 2lb whoosh, I just need a handful more to eradicate the Xmas EFS!!!!!
Stay strong everyone, 1/3 way through (?!!) but we HAVE got this!!!!
Day 10 – Peru 🇵🇪 – NFD
It’s 4.30am at 3800m high in the town of Chivay high in the Andes. WiFi not great and have not been able to catch up on posts but here is my check in for today 😊
With all my palaver yesterday about drinking coca tea, well, yesterday our tour guide brought us to a shop where we all had to stock up on special carbonated water, 73% cocoa dark chocolate….. and a bag of coca leaves 😲
Yes, this was the best way to deal with the extreme altitude he said. We would be at nearly 5000 metres by noon, so soon we were expert at preparing our leaves and chewing like bosses to get the effect. Numb mouth is one of them 😲
But it worked. By the time we reached the Condor Pass we could deal with the altitude, albeit slower to move and out of breath. Amazing scenery of 5 snow capped volcanoes at this pass.
Descent to the town of Chivay and last night we attended a typical Peruvian show with music and dance. Long day. Another long day ahead but such fun. We are off to see the Colca Canyon and it’s condors. Finishing the day at the shores of Lake Titicaca. 😊
Apart from the dark chocolate which was necessary 😁😁😁, food choices were excellent and only 1 beer 🍺. We both feel lighter 👍
Hopefully I can catch up on posts later. By the way planking at this altitude is a bit difficult 😬
Day 10 Wales NFD
@cornish-jane I know exactly what you mean about high calorie healthy fats, I find it incredible that I can eat nuts, cheese, olive oil and full fat yogurt and lose weight……so long as I don’t eat refined carbs or sugar. It goes against everything I believed about dieting for decades. I certainly enjoy food more now and I’m finding FDs oddly refreshing. I’m sure you will lose from your waist in time, I have the opposite problem, I’ve got a trim waist and big bum – I suspect more toning exercise would help 🏋️♀️🤸♀️
@strawberriesandcream I love your end line “Old ways won’t open new doors.” I shall adopt that as my motto for the month.
Happy Wednesday all.
Day 10 a foggy Belfast.
This week so far, I’ve swum 2 miles, kept up my plank challenge and done one Pilates class. MORE important I’ve been making sensible food choices. My whole success seems to be based on routine.
@leggit water kefir operates just like the milk version. You buy or scrounge enough grains to start then they multiply. However you use sugar. Initially I was against this as I am a sugar addict, but in actually fact I’ve got it down to fine art, keeping the sugar to a minimum and it mostly all ferments off. It is delicious if you do a second ferment with berries, lemon and ginger etc. I really don’t like the milk version (even though I make my own yoghurt) so this is the next best thing.
In the UK there is a fermenting group where people give away their spares. If you were in the UK I’d post you some! Hope you feel better soon.
http://nourishedkitchen.com/water-kefir/
https://www.culturesforhealth.com/learn/water-kefir/ten-ways-to-flavor-water-kefir/
@cornish-jane – any planking is a plus!
@taraga – welcome back!
Must dash. Hope all those sufferers out there get well soon!
Day 10…..Florida…..FD
Finally, it’s starting to warm up around here, so it’s making life a bit easier. Yesterday, ended up being a well controlled NFD, so today I’m hoping for a strong FD today.
@ bellyblast…… Flylady is a bit nuts but Ivebeen following the programs for a few months now….. and it so works and I now have so much extra time.
@debster….. with my new worker, I admit for the most part, it could so be me….. okay for the most part it is all me. I was by myself for so long, Im having a hard time adjusting. Plus, I have strong strong A personality….. I try really hard to curb my expectations because I do admit they are a bit high…… okay under expressing that…… They are extremely high…… worse when I’m working because I do expect people to have the same high standards I do……I’m working on it…….
On a good point, she is also working hard to up her game as well! She’s getting out of the just here to collect a check mode, stepping up to the plate and actually taking the ball and actually not trying to pass it off because she thinks it’s someone else’s job.
Work in progress……I tell ya!
Welcome to all the newbies…..I’m working on getting caught up with the posts! But your gonna love it here……. Everyone here are wonderful!
Okay, Well, it’s tbat time again!
I’m going outside to stand, so if anyone ask just tell them I’m OUTSTANDING!
Day 10, Germany, FD
Day 9 FD
Day 8 FD
Day 7 was NFD and I was struggling the whole day! In the evening I gave in and had loads of chocolate and cookies 😥
I am so glad to be back to my fasting routine after the holidays! Actually this is my third FD in a row. I never did that before in this program and am not quite sure whether it is good…
From what I have read about 5:2 it is better to have a NFD between FDs and I am a bit scared that once I start with a NFD again I could be unstoppable! 😵
What experiences do you B2B2B… Fasters have with that? Is it harder after more days in a row? And does your weight loss slow down by it?
I am also sick with a very hurting and sore throat! This probably also makes fasting easier for me at this point. I don’t know yet when I will break my fast but as long as it goes so well I will finish at least today’s fast.
What I realized Sunday night after my sugar binge is that bread and pizza stuff make it so much harder for me! I had more of it in my holidays than usual and it made me feel kind of unclear in my head! Have to take better care of myself!
And one more thing I would like to share with you: I found out a very filling drink for my FDs: big tablespoon of chiaseeds, a bit of milk and hot water (sometimes I add a teaspoon of cocoa and a little stevia) that drink really satisfies me! Since I hardly eat at FDs I can well spend some calories on drinks like that 😋
Maybe it helps some of you, too.
Have a great day, everyone!
Day 10 Akron OH FD
I was only going to quickly skim and post later but @flourbaby I laughed so hard at your comment and just had to reply. Blue Apron is a fresh food meal planning and delivery service, they deliver a box of recipes and ingredients to your door, a week’s worth at a time. The food is really fresh and a lot of people that have tried it really like it; I would like to try it but I am too cheap to pay for it LOL which is why I want to win 🙂
Day 10 – Massachusetts – cd
Not feeling to hungry today but will probably do some eating, so I’m aiming for a CD.
@debster251 – thank you for the help, you are too kind. 😊 I will check out your links and see what my options are for getting some grains!
@miraclelou – somewhat belatedly, I have finished reading the 5:2 book. I’m still very much new to this WOL, so maybe some older members could weigh in. From my understanding, Dr. Mosley picked the two nonconsecutive day a week fasts because it worked and was sustainable for him, which is the most important part of this WOL. He also mentioned that ADF has also shown beneficial results, but is very disruptive to lifestyle. However, I think b2b or b2b2b fasts can be good in that they keep your body in ketosis for longer and you may burn more fat, but since it is challenging for most people it wasn’t recommended. I do think that eating carbs after Fasting several days could cause you to get out of control especially if you are not used to it. But I don’t think it is detrimental unless you really go overboard because you already have a hefty calorie deficit? I’ve been doing B2Bs regularly and find it works for me. I’ve noticed that some of us do b2b2bs regularly, so they can probably answer you better.
Day 9 – USA – FD
Now that I’ve been retired a full year and since my OH has been diagnosed with diabetes, one of my goals this month was to not drink daily; out of the past 10 days, I imbibed 4 days out of 10; however, I the amount of alcohol has increased on those days and it kind of cancels out the principle. It’s something I need to address. OH has cut down to almost nothing, but here I am having a jolly old time alone! Got to rein it in.
Second post.
Miracle Lou, I have been on this board a few years and practice fasting (one hour window of eating in the evening, 500 calories or less) three days a week since I began ( M, Tu, Wed ) – followed by four days of controlled eating. I try to avoid the obvious sugars like cookies, candy, cake, pies, soda, etc. and drink a lot of water/tea every day. I don’t worry too much about the carbs in bread or pasta or something like that if they are part of a main meal with salad, etc. I do try to make healthier choices if possible – say a sweet potato for mashed potatoes – green beans for corn – easy substitutions. I just don’t sit around and eat chips or stuff like that and let my carbs be part of my meal.
I have been able to maintain my goal weight quite easily with this plan (almost there again after the holiday excess). If I lose weight below what I set as my lower limit (about 143), I just eat a bit more healthy food on the other four days. I haven’t found that fasting makes me go crazy for carbs or anything on the “off” days at all because my body just doesn’t want to be unhealthy.
I am as interested in the health benefits of fasting as far as longevity, heart health, better sleep and digestion, inflammatory relief, etc. as I am the weight loss. My hair, skin, nail, etc. have never looked better.
I really think that having our body constantly digesting food has to be tiring on our system so I am always happy to give it a few days rest each week.
Day 10 USA (Illinois) NFD
Great FD yesterday, if I do say so myself. 🙂 Had my daily apple about 2 p.m. then salad with some grilled turkey on top for supper. Lots of water, a little bone broth, and tea to keep warm. I was very cold all day though. Always happens on a winter FD for me.
Off to errands, publicity radio taping for our Children’s Museum fundraiser ball coming up later in January. I’m publicity chair for the fledgling museum, so more civic responsibility!
Onward and downward.
Day 10, UK, NFD
My NFD might turn into FD due to my, by now, really bad cold 😷. I could hardly get up today, every muscle in my body hurts 😣. Don’t feel like making food, or eating.
Thanks for that recipe @anna6, I will make it once I feel better 😀
@daffodil2010 your trip to Peru seems amazing, and very entertaining 😀 , keep us posted.
I’ll be off to hibernate on my sofa.
Have a great day everyone 🤗
