  • It has been very wet here in Somerset for weeks. But I don’t live near the floods, so I am grateful for that and can’t imagine the horror of those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.

We have had sunshine here for a whole day. So although it is chilly, it is our first dry day in ages.Just back from a very slow 8 mile run, so feeling quite demoralized that my fitness is way behind where it should be.I just have next week to try and get to 10 miles and then it is the big day.The streets round here are full of runners in all shapes, sizes and ages, which is rather lovely.

    Have a great week everyone!

Don’t feel demoralised, annette. To run 8 miles even very slowly is an achievement in itself after having been quite unwell only a week or two back. I’m sure you’ll build up slowly but surely over the next week and acquit yourself honourably on the big day.

Phyllis, I’m so glad you are happy to be called a foxy lady. For a few horrible moments after I posted it suddenly occurred to me that it might mean something quite different – and possibly impolite – in the southern USA. Such things happen in various parts of the English-speaking world.

Oh, Phyllis! So glad to hear from you. I’ve been wondering about u!!

Hermajtomomi, in the South we love to be called foxy lady. Lol!!! But I know what you mean about expressions not translating quite the same. 🙂

Today is a fast day for me, which was a bit of a struggle because we had a potluck after church today. {What does everybody else call it besides a potluck?} But I persevered! Ha. Anyway, are there foods that y’all avoid on fast days? I don’t do sugar, potatoes, or carbs (like breads & pasta). Just curious….

I’ve had sick kids (bronchitis, double ear infections) & haven’t been to the gym since Wednesday. Ugh. Although we did ride bikes yesterday (we’re experiencing gorgeous, warmer than usual weather right now!!). So today I’m sure we’ll ride again & I will try to fit in some yoga this evening…probably while watching the Olympics!!

    Happy fasting, y’all.

I have really enjoyed reading everyone’s posts. It has helped my motivation, thank you.
I am about to attempt my first fast day whilst being home from school with the children, could be more of a challenge than usual. I had thought about giving myself half term off but I think that is more about giving into my frustration at not losing any weight. I think I am beginning to slip a little on non-fast day which may be part of the problem 🙁
I do already walk regularly but I am just beginning my training for the Moonwalk in May so hopefully that’ll will help, would like less of me to be on show when I am walking around London in my bra!

hermajtomomi Thanks for the encouragement. I don’t ache today, so I could have done more! The rain is pouring once again, so glad that I went out yesterday.

mommabear glad to have you back again and sorry that the kids have been sick.I usually eat soup for one meal and fish and salad/veg for the other. I avoid pasta, bread and rice on a fast day.

helen welcome and glad that you have found the posts helpful.Walking is a fabulous waist whittler. Have you thought about getting/wearing a sports bra while you train but also under neath your decorated bra?It should give support and prevent chaffing.Fantastic achievement, my friend did it twice….avoid feathers as they chafe too!

Hi all, Annette, so glad you aren’t getting flooded! it is really sad that folks are loosing so much with the flooding.

hope you are feeling better, glad you aren’t sore today after your run. now, I would be bragging, ” I ran 8 whole miles “. 🙂 so glad you have lots of other folks running around too. I think you are doing great after being so sick.

Hermajtomomi, like mommabear says, foxy lady is a good thing. LOL. I actually look like a little granny lady, but I like to think of being foxy. 😉 thanks to 5:2 I AM a thinner little old lady. 🙂 know what you mean about things not meaning the same in different areas. I watch a lot of British T.V. and have fun figuring out what some of the slang means. And of course here in the southern U.S. we speak a whole other language sometimes. 🙂

Mommabear, so good to see you!! hope the kids are feeling better. like you, I avoid carbs on fast days, seems to make me more hungry if I eat them. I’m trying to cut down on regular days too.

Helen, welcome! be patient on the weight loss. it will come. now tell me about this moonwalk thing, walking around in your bra? brave souls. 🙂 I’ll bet you will be doing great by May. be sure to take your measurements so you can have that encouragement when the scales don’t seem to be dropping.

hope everyone is having a great day! Phyllis

Dear Annette, what an inspiring story. Hope the race goes well.
If you are still concerned about the wt loss, try to get a body composition reading done. Most personal trainers will do skin folds or you could find someone to use a body stat machine or try Tanita scales. That will give you an idea of muscle mass and fat composition. It sounds as tho you have a fair amount of muscle with all the running.

    Hi Jenni,
Thank you. The days are whizzing by and I am struggling with the running, so I have moved into panic mode and have eaten 5 Rock Cakes that I made this morning!I could call it carb loading….but I am just being greedy!I am more interested in inch loss than weight loss, but will wait until after the Half and then see what the situation is. My legs are toned and if you look very carefully, I have teeny tiny abs which thrill me every day. I didn’t have them 30 years ago.I need to lift weights for my weedy arms, so perhaps after that I might be brave enough to consider showing my skin folds.Good idea though.
MountainMyst great to hear from you. The Moonwalk is 26.2 miles walking through London through the night to raise money for breast cancer. Part of it is to decorate the bra that you wear perhaps over a t-shirt…along with the rest of your clothes! It is a huge event with thousands of women walking together.I can’t brag about 8 miles when I need to be able to run 13.1!Although I did remind myself that when I started running, I couldn’t run to the end of the street without wanting to collapse.

Thank goodness ‘foxy lady’ is a good thing in the US too. I always rather liked the saying, it means strong and gorgeous to me.

glad to hear more about the Moonwalk. also glad to hear the bra is worn over the clothes, because I was thinking that would be really chilly. LOL. great cause too.

ooh, to have abs. I’m finding myself with lots of little old lady folds, if you know what I mean. this M.E. has taken pretty much all my muscle tone, and left very little muscle mass. I’m trying to continue my exercises and maybe build up some more muscle. I am pleased with my weight loss though. my waist is less that half my height, but seems to be stuck. no decrease for weeks, but then I haven’t been strict with my fasting because of everything going on. will see what the next few weeks bring.

hope the weather gets better so you can train in the dry, that could only help. and hey, 8 miles is a heck of a lot further than the end of the street! you have come so far. good luck with your training. oh, and I’m full of questions today, what are Rock Cakes?

hi to all the foxy ladies fasting this week. Phyllis

Abs would be lovely. I always like the idea of running but haven’t had the stamina since I left school, well done. Rock cakes are a great source of fuel, something else I haven’t experienced since school. I wonder how they turn out gluten free, I might have to introduce my children to them. http://britishfood.about.com/od/recipeindex/r/rockckaes.htm

My last Moonwalk was freezing and involved several layers over my bra, although I did feel the need to cross the finish line without the jumpers and coats. Hopefully after all the rain we will have a warm spring. The theme for the decorations this year is rockabilly, not quite sure how to do that on a bra.

    Have a good Tuesday everyone.

    Hi Phyllis,

I suppose some will not wear the bra over a t-shirt, but it is going to get chilly overnight!Oh to have a waist that is half my height….the stuff of dreams.Keep going with the exercises. I joined a gym last week purely to run in the dry but goodness treadmill running is very boring.

Rock cakes are individual cakes made of flour, fat, egg and dried fruit that are arranged in rough heaps on a baking sheet, so that they look rather like rocks. They should be light. Years ago when I was first married I tried to make them and they were just like rocks…very hard!

Wednesday looks dry, so I might have a bash at 10 miles outside with the rest of the lunatics. The rest of the week is rain…just what we need more of.

The highlight of my week tomorrow is going back to Ceroc.I haven’t been since before Christmas and I am so looking forward to it.

Hi Annette, oh, I imagine running on a treadmill would be boring, much better to be outside in the world ( except of course when it’s pouring ) I so often see people driving round and round outside the gym, looking for parking close to the door, so they don’t have to walk too far to go exercise. always gives me a giggle. 🙂

your first rock cakes sound like some of my cooking adventures. the first time I made chili after we married, I asked my hubby if he liked it spicy. he said yes so I made it spicy, he took one bite and said “honey, what did you put in this” LOL.

oh, Ceroc sounds like so much fun. I’m glad you are feeling up to going back. what with the dance and running, I’ll bet that waistline is going to shrink. I think the Ceroc would be MUCH more fun than running although I used to love to run when I was younger. don’t know about miles though. 🙂 hugs Phyllis

I was worried about the bras, when we’ve had such inclement weather, here and in your part of the world, also. Glad to hear it could be worn with other clothes!

Tonight, I had to walk through slushy water and scrape the car windows by beating the scraper on the glass to remove ice sheets falling down, after I could get them to move at all. Got home and noticed a broken vein in the eye from all the ice flak flying off. -11F almost beats this mess. Anyone worried about global warming?

I have been trying kettlebells, and am very impressed about how the back of my thighs feel. Anyone else?

Piper -11F!!!!!!!!!!!I was showed how to do the kettle bell with the tiniest one,so I will have to try it again.

Phyllis Ceroc is pure bliss. Running is something that I enjoy after the event, the warm glow of what has been achieved. I only started running in an attempt to prevent osteoporosis and to get fitter.

    Good Morning Fast Friends,

My goals for February and March, are to lose the inches that I have gained over December, when I thought that a month off was a good idea(it wasn’t) and January when I was ill and spent much of it in bed.Out of the 9 inches that piglet pants here has regained, I have lost 4 which is lovely. However, the extra 2 inches on my hips and bust are the real headache and rather reluctant to go.

I had a try on of clothes last night which was rather depressing, but half a stone makes a HUGE difference and really limits my wardrobe. Jeans that were my ‘get into goal’ have fallen apart with big holes where the thighs used to rub. Just bought new size 12’s which are a snug fit. Ho hum.On the positive…I am still over a stone lighter than when I started.

Another grey day with rain and low cloud. Deep joy. I was planning a bash at 10 miles….perhaps later.

Piper, I LOVE kettlebells! And I use them in various ways. In fact, last week I realized I hadn’t done kettlebell deadlifts in awhile…so I did…& I was so, so sore. Lol. Need to get back to those!!! They do the most for my thighs.

Annette, great goals & I’m with ya!! This morning I stepped on the scales finally…I’m still up 5 lbs since Thanksgiving. Grr. And I’m not brave enough to check my measurements! Ha!! But after my Sunday fast day I can tell I’ve shed some of those extra inches. Which motivates me for my fast day today.

Unlike those still experiencing terrible winter weather, it feels like Spring here in the southern US. High of 72F anticipated here today. Crazy wonderful! Which makes me think of summer…& swimsuit season. My favorite time of year. But this year I plan on rocking a bikini…it’s been too long! So therefore…I fast. Just a little over 3 months until it’s swimsuit season here….

Hi Helenadam, I don’t know how I missed your post the other day. I can only plead brain fog. rockabilly? hhhmmmm, will have to think about that. bet I should be able to find some things for that. I think I would have to wear long undies and several layers under that pretty bra. I’m impressed that you are doing such a walk.

Hi Piper hope you are warming up. we went from snow to thunderstorms. I’m ready for spring now. haven’t tried kettlebells. sounds like work. LOL.

Hi Annette, 4 inches gone!! great!! it’s funny how sometimes our bodies just decide to hang on to those inches (ok, funny may not been the right word:)) but I expect you will be comfy in those size 12 jeans soon. a stone lighter is a GOOD thing. ugh, rainy runs, not fun.

Mommabear, hope your fast day is going great, those inches and extra pounds will be gone soon. bikini?? brave soul!!!! I’ll bet you WILL rock that bikini.

hope every one is having a good day.phyllis

    Hi Helen,
I missed your post too.Sorry.Rockabilly? I’ll have to think about that but it says gingham check fabric and blacked out teeth to me!Running is new for me, not sporty and started off running from one lamppost to the next convinced that the end was nigh!I have built it up over the past couple of years…and managed another 8 miles today. I was aiming for 10, but dodging heavy rain meant leaving later and then I was late for lunch and very hungry.I’ll have another bash on Friday.

mommabear my secret wish(not secret anymore) is to wear a bikini again and this year. Oh 72F sounds fantastic. I am running in a 2 layers with gloves.I love to run in shorts and a vest top with sunglasses on.

MountainMyst The jeans are on and tight, but I have to wear them as nothing else fits!I am pleased about the stone and reckon there will be another to go.Ho hum.

@annette52, gingham & blacked out teeth sound more hillbilly than rockabilly to me!

Helen – how about a swallow & hearts?

Had to post again as I’m laughing at the rockabilly vs hillbilly comments!! Too funny. Rockabilly is considered the earliest form of Rock-n-roll music…think the earliest years of Elvis Presley. Costume wise think white socks, black shoes, jeans rolled up, white t-shirt, & slicked back hair. Rockabilly was born in Tennessee & Arkansas…where Phyllis & I live!!! And hillbillies…oh my…Annette is right….blacked out teeth, chewing on straw & wearing overalls. Lol!!!! Also where Phyllis & I live. Ha!!! Well, not these days….

Yesterday I skipped dinner, so I fasted from 1 pm yesterday until 7 pm tonight, having my 500 calories at noon. Normally I would’ve waited until tomorrow morning to eat breakfast but tonight I’m tired, having crazy allergy issues because one day we have snow & another day I’m wearing flip flops. So I ate a little something at 7 pm. Plus I have a tough tennis match in the morning after not playing almost all winter!!

Happy fasting all!!! And Annette, I’m eying some (modest) bikinis for this summer. I’m 38 & don’t have many bikini years left!! Lol!! My abs are fine…my hourglass figure and all…but I’m waiting for that baby pooch below my belly button to disappear. That came with baby #3! Couple more inches & I should be golden!

must have missed a lot! Rockabilly vs Hillbilly???! I am from sturdy stock- Scots-Welch. The important thing is to be more Daisy Mae than Mammy Yokum! – although Mammy was much smarter and skinnier. Can’t help thinking, I don’t wanna be either one! Is there some middle ground? LOL!

oh, go on, look it up.

I am a Muppet and got my wires well and truly crossed! Quite how you ‘do’ rockabilly on a bra baffles me. Any ideas for Helen?

Mommabear You have many bikini years ahead of you with abs, hourglass figure and being 38.I am waiting for that baby pooch to disappear too…and it’s going with running helping it on it’s way.I am 53 and fully intend to make up for all those overweight years when I should have been in my prime and wasn’t.So my goal is a modest bikini for the summer, which should give me about 4ish months to reach the stuff of dreams and finally get a waist that is less than half my height.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who was getting confused.

Thanks mommabear for your description of rockabilly, I was getting hung up on Country and Western, had visions of a cowboy hat over each bra cup.

I’d love suggestions, thanks Annette. My last Moonwalk bra was just pink and girly with a few sequins and feathers sewn on.

Arla, swallows and hearts could be good. I’ve got a creative walking partner although she lives 200 miles away so I’ll shall definitely be forwarding your ideas to her.

Walking around London in my bra will be the closest I’m going to get to a bikini for a while, especially when my 8 year old likes to tell my how my bottom wobbles when I walk.

Struggling with my motivation in half term. Fasting today, haven’t eaten yet, going for lunch and dinner today.

    So, Lurker alert!
I’ve been reading through all your posts and have got to say you have all done so very well! its made me feel like its possible for me. I’m on my second fast day and am hungry, but quite enjoying the feeling (we’ll see how long that lasts!).
Annette, very impressed with your running, I’m doing a 5K in April and have decided to do a half marathon in September, nervous but know I can get there.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the inspiration!

    Hi Helen,
The thought of a cowboy hat over each bra cup made me roar with laughter! In another couple of months or sooner, your dear child won’t be able to make such comments…so hang on in there.Make plans and keep the cherub busy too.

    Hi Jen,
Welcome to out little band. Do feel free to join in. Have a look at the FAQ’s on the page and plan your fast day meals along with a huge list of stuff to do on that day, which will keep you out of the kitchen too. It’s lovely that you are impressed with my running, but I am very slow and moan a lot. Well done on the 5K for April.Increase your distance every week so that you can comfortably run the distance, would be my advice. You have loads of time, but if you can get out several times a week and gradually build up your distance, that will help your confidence and breathing.Which Half are you planning to do in September?

Hi Helen, rockabilly’s a reinvented 50’s style (tattoos not essential). Red, black, white, navy are common colours – but others aren’t non-rockabilly. Anchors, hearts, cherries, swallow are motifs I’ve seen used and gingham/polkadot/cherry prints are fabric designs. Again, not the only motifs/designs but they are recognisable. I did a google image search for ‘rockabilly fashion’ and the first couple of screens seemed pretty good (didn’t keep looking).

Well first week done and I’m done 2 1/4 lbs and an inch off my waist, very pleased!
Annette the half I doing is the Crathes Half. I’m in aberdeen and it’s about 10-15 miles out towards royal deeside, it looks lovely, from Crathes castle to drum castle and back.
I’m doing the C25k to get started, I believe you did that too?

I love rockabilly, I’m a cake maker and decorator and very often use those kind of designs for my cakes!

arla Rockabilly fashion now sounds very doable.

jen Amazing weight and inch loss-I am very jealous!Well done.
I am in soggy Somerset, so running between 2 castles sounds spectacular. I’ve never run in Scotland.Bath Half Marathon is on the 2nd March which is my next panic and then we train through the summer(my favourite) until another half in September. This is my last spring Half though, the winter training is so miserable.

    Hi Everybody,

I feel as if I have missed loads while away, and a lot to catch up on. I can’t comment on everything what’s happened but well done to everybody and welcome to the newbies.

Three months off 5.2 due to illness, Christmas and holidays.

Well although having a good wall to wall eating and drinking on holiday, we have both put on 6lbs!!!! In 10 days. It has been really hard to get back into smaller portions, and we are hungry all the time, we only managed 1 fast this week. Coming back on the forum reading all the up dates is so encouraging, also my own blog since July and realised how well we had done.
( someone suggested this and it helped a lot)

Well we weighed in and we both are 3lbs down and back on track. The holiday photos helped a lot and make you realise there is still a lot of weight/inches to move!!!!!

    Jean x

    Hi Jean,
Welcome back and there is no need to comment on everything that has happened.

I had a month off over December(big mistake) and spent much of January either in bed for days, or getting home from work and then going to bed. That virus took ages to get over.I have managed to put on 10 lb through all that, which was very depressing. However, I been doing a bit more running and building more muscle, so the scales are of no interest at the moment. I am desperate for the 2 inches that went on the hips to come off as a greater priority. There are 4 inches less of me.

I found it hard getting back to fast days too and will get back to the groove about mid March.Well done on that 3 lb. Photos can be cruel, but also a great incentive.Lovely to have you back Jean. I was wondering how you were getting on.

The Half Marathon is a week today and the streets are full of other lunatics who are also running next Sunday. I staggered round 12 miles(19.3km) with my son this morning in the wind and drizzle. Just hope that is enough preparation for the 13.1 miles(21.08 km) to come.Getting round in one piece is now my new aim, it was brutal this morning, running into a gale for much of it.

Have a great week fast friends.

Well done Annette, I did a modest 3.1km in comparison, but I suppose it’s all relative!

12 miles is good, you’ll do the half marathon easy if you can do that! Go you!

Feeling good today, 3rd fast tomorrow and actually looking forward to it, ask me that again tomorrow when I’m hungry 😉

Well done Annette on your 12 miles, you both do really well.

Good luck to your half next weekend.
    X

Thanks Jen and well done on your run too.It won’t be easy and I am very tired today.

Thanks Jean. I will need the good luck. The plan is to do 5 miles on Wed and then 3 on Friday, just to keep the legs going.

Annette & all other runners, I’m so proud of y’all for continuing to train in yucky weather! I hate the cold & although a HUGE outdoor enthusiast (we’re big hikers, rock climbers, bikers, etc) I retreat indoors during our cold months. And although it was in the 70F last week, they’re predicting snow for this weekend. Oh. My.

And because of our crazy weather, my allergies have kicked in. And because I haven’t felt well I haven’t even attempted a fast day. I wake up sneezing, scratching my eyes, coughing…& desperate for caffeine. Sigh. But today, my normal fast day, I feel bloated & just plain yuck. So tomorrow, allergies and all, I’m fasting.

I was 9 pounds from goal weight, but with the holidays I’m now 13-15 pounds. {Another long, dramatic sigh!} But I’m 3 months to swimsuit season. So that’s my goal!!! Happy fasting, y’all!!

    Hi mommabear,
Allergies sounds awful. Poor you, I hope it gets better.

I have been increasing carbohydrates this week, and just stood on the scales. Probably looking at a planned 14 lb loss before the summer.Ho hum.

Never mind, it is a marathon and not a sprint!

Hi,Annette. Good luck for Sunday, will be thinking of you. Off out for a run in a mo for the first time in a while. At least the sun is shining but snow is predicted for tomorrow! Eeeek.

    Hi All,

Still not totally focused, but we have done two good fast days. Still not back in the swimming or walking. I really think the excerise helps a lot and it’s very slow weight loss/inches if it’s not done.

Just finishing the kitchen so we are still feeling shattered a lot of the days. We have cut back to working 4 hours a day as its done when it’s done…but we are nearly there maybe a couple more days! A very long 8 weeks! But it looks good.

Hope the run is good at the weekend and the weather kind…with a good time…Annette

Our thoughts are with you and hope you soon feel better Mommabear…they sound awful.

Sonunda have a good run before the snow!
    X

Hi Annette, just wanted to say good luck for Sunday and I hope that the rain or snow (?) stays away for you! Hope that all goes well and that all the training pays off.

Hi, well, I have finally finished my physical therapy, so should be able to be here more often. now I just need to watch my food intake a bit closer. I find myself slowly adding more hot drinks because I’ve been really COLD. 🙂 problem is, I don’ like unsweetened teas and such. so have been having too much sugar I think. I’ve been on a plateau for a while, playing around with the same lb.

still, I put on some slacks yesterday that I though were size 12 and they were a bit loose, when I took them off, they were a 10!!! made me smile. I have decided that if I can maintain until warm weather, I’ll just be happy. then I’ll tackle that last few lbs.

mommabear, hope your allergies are behaving, I know mine have been acting up, wheezes and sneezes. Annette, good luck with your run. wishes you all a great week, and the energy to do your favorite activities. hugs Phyllis

Size 10 Phyllis, I wish……It’s lovely when the size is wrong and it’s smaller…you must be nearly were you want to be even if you go up and down with the same pound. Well done.
    Jean x

Thank you all for your good wishes for Sunday. I bounce between just trying to enjoy the experience and getting round in under 3 hours, to wanting to do it in 2.5 hours. My original goal was 2.16, but that ship sailed when I was ill for weeks. My thighs are 0.5 inches smaller too!
I am trying to work out how many jelly beans to take and eat on the way round to prevent being starving and no energy at 10 miles.Big pasta meal planned Saturday evening and booked a Restaurant for a post race meal-pasta and pudding.I suspect that the scales and tape measure will be best avoided for next week, and then I will re-join you all again.

    Size 10….the stuff of dreams!

I’ll let you know how I get on. Off to the gym for a gentle 5K….training done.

Hi Jean, I am pretty close to the first goal I set. 7 lbs to get to the top of my “normal” weight. it wouldn’t hurt my feelings to loose a few more, but I’m fairly happy now. it’s been a long time since I was a size 10. I was there briefly about 7 yrs ago, but did that the hard way, therefore it was temporary. at my age, I think I would probably be a bit too wrinkly if I lost too much more. of course there is only one way to find out. 🙂

Annette, good luck with your run! ooh, thinner thighs!! that is loverly! take care and enjoy your carb loading. looking forward to hearing all about it.

take care and be good to yourselves. Phyllis

    @annette52 good luck for Sunday

    Hi All,

A weigh in day for us today, fasted two days but no excerise. Really pleased to say another 1lb each off. We are upping the game this next week with the swimming starting again Monday and Thursday and hopefully some walking around the village
( bad knees and feet for both of us) so it will be on the slow side!

Good luck to everybody, hope it’s a good week.

    Jean x

hi Jean, whoohoo, a pound gone. good for you!!!! good luck with the exercise next week. Phyllis

Thank you for the good wishes.Rather than sun which was predicted, now it is light-heavy rain.

Well done Phyllis, that is great achievement.

    Well done Jean, another lb.

oh no!! not great weather news. I hope the predictions are wrong. good luck and take care of yourself. will be thinking of you and sending good vibes. 🙂 Phyllis

It’s really chilly here, hat/gloves/warm coat weather today.
Predicted 9C at 11 with light rain and then at 2-heavy rain. Not great news and no idea how many layers etc to wear now. Thank you for the good vibes, could you do something about the weather? A balmy 10C no wind or rain would be lovely!
