Sorry to hear you are so poorly Annette–would love to air rush you that wholesome chicken soup. happy birthday and let there be brighter days ahead. After a week of taking a special really high dose powder of vitamin c and zinc I am picking up. Maybe it would help you especially as you are recovering.
all the best
Annette, so glad you are feeling better. continue to be kind to yourself.
been having a little bit more energy, good thing, lot more pain, not so good. could use some of snedgers paracetamol. 🙂 saw the doctor this am. starting a course of steroids, not great for my weight loss. LOL.
sending everyone wishes for a great day. Phyllis
Hurrah! Glad you are feeling better Annette! Good to know you are now up and about. I’m sure you are wise to give yourself some recovery time before attempting the 5:2 (or the running) as these viruses tend to hang around a bit. I hope you are able to relax over the weekend – not too much slaving over a hot stove..
This is my second week back to the 5:2 routine after the holiday and I reckon Im probably back at my pre-Christmas weight now. However, my measurements dont seem to be budging much at present. I’ve been recording my weight and measurements on MyFitnessPal for a while now and it shows that I tend to plateau and then lose 1-3lbs very quickly and then plateau again so I try not to worry when I feel I’m hitting a bit of a wall. Would like to lose a few more inches off my waist and another 5-6lbs before the summer. Cant wait to only fast once a week instead of twice!!
I wonder if losing the last few lbs to get to your target is the hardest and the weight loss slows down? Have others experienced this?
Have been meaning to ask everyone if you have any particularly useful foods that you tend to eat on fast days (or when very hungry on the following day and trying not to over-indulge!). I seem to depend on sparkling spring water and fresh lime juice, mugs of tea, steamed tenderstem broccoli, baby leaf spinach, cherry tomatoes, strawberries (when in season)and some protein like a poached egg or small piece of fish. I should probably look at some of the FD recipes to get some more ideas but on my actual fast days I dont want to spend much time thinking about or preparing food – though I have to feed my teenagers. It is particularly galling when they get back from school on my fast days and say “What can I eat?” before turning down all my suggestions as not being particularly appetising (when I am longing to eat hot toast and marmite, tasty cheese and biscuits and all the other things they have rejected!)
Wishing you all a great weekend and good luck to all those standing on the scales or getting out the tape measure!
I’m wearing size 12 trousers! Whoooeeee! It has been a very long times since this happened.
Those pesky teenagers coming in from school are a worry. Years ago my nutritionist niece gave me terrific advice about the relationship between mood/behaviour and food. She advised me to stack their breakfasts with protein, their lunchboxes with carbs, have a basket full of ‘good’ food sitting on the bench when they got home from school, and feed them more protein at tea time.
It worked – especially my grumpy son who had a real case of testosterone poisoning from age 13 to 17. He was noticeably nicer if I could get him to eat a couple of egg and sausage muffins (Mum’s macdonalds he called them) in the morning. He’d have one in his hand on the way to the bus stop. He asked me to buy him expensive protein shakes to ‘bulk up’ – I did buy one tub for $50. As he emptied it I topped it up with Milo which had almost identical nutritional composition and cost $10.
The best thing I ever did for my kids was convnce them that ‘soda’ ie fizzy sugar water is over-priced poison.
Hi Everybody,
Back from Dubai today after visiting my new baby Grandaughter. I am really looking forward to getting back on board. After my antibiotics I am now better.
I have eaten so much rubbish this week. A very Americian household (Son-in-Law) I have had chocolate, muffins, carrot cake, lemon pie, cookies, toast, pizza, steak (that was lovely)more chocolate, more cookies, more muffins, more cakes, carbs , carbs, and more carbs. Not forgetting the wine!
I so want Fast……scales for me and hubby a week on Friday. Swimming starts again Monday. Totally back on 5.2 shopping tomorrow!
Sorry to hear you are still unwell Annette and you also in a lot pain Phyllis…hope you both soon feel better.
Robo size 12 trousers really great..well done.

Here is a post to encourage all the very big people. Last September I spruiked 5:2 to an acquaintance who is morbidly obese with a list of ailments as long as your arm. He asked how I’d lost the 10kg, and then gave me ten reasons why it wouldn’t work for him. Saw him again this morning – the transformation was amazing! Seems he watched the documentary, bought the book, and has lost 15kg. He still has a long way to go but he made me feel really special for being the person who switched him on to 5:2.
Hello Annette and all the lovely people on this thread. I’ve been reading through it for the past couple of days and all the comments are so encouraging. I just finished my fourth fast yesterday and have decided that Friday is my weigh day. A little dissappointed to see that in two weeks I have only lost 0.5 kgs but at the same time still feel motivated. Tomorrow I will take my measurements (and try not to cheat by breathing in too much!) to monitor the cms lost.
Annette – we are the same age. I will be 53 on 1st April (great day for a birthday) and I also started out at 74 kgs (now 73.5!). I don’t expect or want to ever get back to the old 54 kgs I was many years ago, but halfway at 64 would be great.
I have an 8 hour a day office job so am not very active though I try to get some cyclette in during the week and brisk walks at the weekends.
Thankyou all again and have a great weekend.
Billie x
Hello everyone,
This is the end of week 3 and I have now lost 8lbs – so far, so good and I am a happy bunny!
I have noticed that weight has reduced in places where I was beginning to ‘wobble’ i.e. love handles, around the tummy and on my back etc. However, I am typically pear-shaped and I can quite honestly say that despite this weight loss my jeans are not in the slightest bit looser, which is my ‘problem area’.
I am taking regular exercise by walking at least 3 miles daily. I don’t ‘do’ gyms as the repetitiveness of it bores me stupid and I know if I go back I won’t continue so there is no point in wasting my money.
Does anyone have the same problem?
Thanks and have a good day!
Hi Annette,
Thanks for your support.
I agree – my waist is definitely reappearing and my back doesn’t feel so ‘blobby’ now. Both of these issues have only occurred/crept on in the past year so it is time they disappeared again.
Fingers crossed my hips and thighs are the next part to shrink – both being my problem areas.
So far, I have found the diet quite easy and have adapted to it without much problem. I do have 3 meals on a fast day, but that suits me so I will stick with it as it seems to work. Everyone has to do what is easiest and most effective for them.
I will keep you posted…..
Thanks again and good luck to everyone.
I’m feeling very bad today – I’m having real difficulty sticking to a fast day. I seemed to have lost all that easy resolve I started with. I’ve come to the forum to read for motivation and I’ve just re-watched some Horizon and other stuff on YouTube. I’ve got to get my mojo back to resist the food and booze between 5 and 8pm every evening. I’m stuck on 72kg and this is the reason. I still really really really want to get down to 65 or even 63kg but it wont happen unless I remember how to fast.
@roba, lets get this ball rolling again together! I too am sitting around 70kg and my next goal is 65kg.I struggled with fasting yesterday as well. I go back to work 4 days a week from the 2nd wk in Feb. Fasting should be easier then.
My plan of attack is to be 65kg by the 24th March, 8wks today, its my daughters 5th Birthday!
What do you say? Are you up to the challenge??
Anyone else want to jump on board the and set a goal for the next 8wks? Please do!

I’m right there with y’all, Annette & RoBa. I thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas season, making it through with little weight gain. However, January brought with it a rough week of hormones….& I over indulged. And every time I try to get back on track, I met with obstacles!! But today I have almost completed a successful fast day. And I’m considering an early bed night so that it stays successful. Ha!
I’ve gained back 4-5 pounds…& I’m still too chicken to check my measurements. Ha!! They can’t be good…. Hopefully today marks a successful day of getting back on track.
The original posting on this feed has been very helpful (I dare say many many others are too, but tooooo many to read them all!). My weight can vary by 3/4 pounds over the course of 24 (eating) hours, so I’m trying not to put too much store in what the scales say and just be patient and wait for my old trousers to fit again. It’s been 4 years and 2 children since I wore some of them! Only started 5:2 this month, so I do need help to be realistic. And what a lovely forum. So refreshing to see such positive community voices.
Annette, I’m glad you shared how you fast. I have been fasting from about 6:30 Saturday night until around 8:30 Monday morning. So that technically I’m fasting approximately 38 hours. However, I do enjoy fasting dinner on most nights, & simply eating a larger lunch. Like I did today. And tomorrow is a fast day for me. So I’m going to change it up & hope that I’m not as cranky & irritable towards the end of my fasting as I have been lately. I finished lunch around 1 pm today & haven’t eaten since. So I’ll eat tomorrow around 6 pm, giving me almost 30 hours of fasting.
I feel the need to shake things up a bit because lately I feel great during the day while fasting, but by the time my kids’ bedtime rolls around I’m too snippy for bedtime stories or really anything else!!
Hope everyone is having a great week!
Well finished 6th fast yesterday and did weigh in today. Still no weight loss to speak of (overall 0.3 kgs in three weeks). I can’t say I’m not a little dissappointed as I’ve kept below 500 cals on fast days just below TDEE on normal days (apart from a couple of days during the last weekends when I may have gone slightly over – but not by much). I took my measurements this morning though and I think a small amount has gone from waist and upper arms (not boobs though which I was hoping for – bra getting too tight!).
I will keep going though and try to do a bit more exercise. Not easy with an 8 to 5 job and a family waiting at home but will try to get half and hour of stationary bike in 3 times a week and keep to the brisk walks at weekends.
Would be very happy for any ideas / advice / motivation. Thanks.
Hi Billie
Your story sounds very familiar to mine. When I started 5:2, a cousin started on the same day. 3 weeks later she had lost 10lbs and I had lost 0! I decided to give it one more week before giving up, and lo and behold, the next week I was suddenly 7lbs down!
Please don’t give up…..everyone has different reactions to the changes in their eating habits.
I’m now one year on, 43lbs (almost20kg) down, and still losing. Most of the time I do 5:2, other times 4:3, and having put on 5lbs at Christmas, I even tried ADF for a week…..hard going, but effective!
Please keep going, it’s amazing how this all becomes a way of life, and if you miss fasting one week, you will make up for it….it all becomes second nature.
So….good luck. I look forward to reading about your loss, it will happen!
X
Thankyou kmck157 for the encouragement 🙂 I will keep going for the health benefits if nothing else. Luckily I have no particular health issues that I know of but prevention is a good idea. I don’t have a huge amount to lose but need to go down 10 kilos to get to a heathly weight. I don’t find it particularly difficult to fast and it’s getting easier all the time so no point in stopping now! 🙂 Thanks again.
That’s really good to hear Annette, reassuring. Pleased for you.:)
My first week back (after putting on those 12lbs since Christmas) has gone well too and I’ve lost 5lbs which I know will be largely fluid but happy to take :). Both our experiences have restored my confidence. Aiming for at least one good walk this weekend.Hope you get to do your run Annette. It’s a bit windy here but dry with winter sunshine.
All the best everyone, good weekend to all 🙂
Hi guys, just wanted to say thank you for this thread, it has really helped me with this way of life. I’ve just completed my 3rd week, and lost 2.7kg, which is not small change (to me, anyway) but I’ve also lost 10cm off my waist and an inch off each thigh! Without this thread I wouldn’t have thought to measure myself when I started and I might have gotten disheartened, but I persevered due to your wise words. So thanks. Hope yours and my journeys continue to be positive ones.
-Kate
Well done on your loss Annette. L know it’s not ALL about the scales but it’s great to see the figures go down after being stuck/going up for a while. Got my walk – 2 hours at a decent pace so am delighted with that. First exercise this year and feeling it – thighs, waist and buttocks. Good feeling though and my head feels clearer with more energy. The weather was all over the place, talk about 4 seasons in 1 day, but can’t complain. We’ve been lucky here compared with some people in the UK. Haven’t heard of a Tayberry plant – does it actually produce fruit? Funnily enough I’ve just had a “Grow your own lavender” kit delivered from Amazon. All in a tin and for my windowsill. I do have a garden but I wanted a wee growing thing for indoors to help think about Spring 🙂 10K – hat off to you. I hope to start running this year.
It is a good thread isn’t it? I find these forums really helpful and reassuring too. Great losses for you – scales AND inches! Well done! Thanks for your positivity too 🙂
Sending my best to everyone xxxx
HI
I have been following this eating method since May 2013 but have never weighed myself in all that time. I have no scales at home and I have to admit I was VERY sceptical when I embarked on it after a conversation with a work colleague but straight away people started to comment and ask if I had lost weight. In June after about 4 weeks I bought some trousers and they were a size 16. In October I was a size 12 and have even got into a size 10 in some styles. I know I have lost weight as I can see it in the mirror and I can tell from my clothes. The change in body shape has been astounding. The best think though is the extra confidence I feel knowing that I can wear styles which I like not just what I can fit into or what suits the larger frame – I am getting back an individual sense of style!
Well done to everyone this diet can really change your life and how you feel about yourself!
Hi everyone,
Long time since I joined in, with new Grandaughter being born and visiting, and helping out and new kitchens being fitted all hands on deck, and Christmas……. Two months really off plan..we got the two stone off and we have maintained, with a couple of pounds up and down. Hubby now booked a 10 day all inclusive to get over all the work done and relax……..to avoid his 65th birthday when people are trying to do a suprise party…..he doesn’t want…….and hopefully not to put too much weight on.
Back on the 13th promising both to be back on plan….so a week 5.2 fasting then weigh in on the 21st……we really need to get back on board. Another half stone each needed.
We have been so focused for 5 months, the hitch of Christmas has been really hard to get on track. It looks like we are not the only ones…..hard for everybody. All the bugs seem to have gone so no excuses.
Good listening to everybody we are all in the same boat, so gives motivation to all. Good Luck to the next few weeks , will join in again…in 10 days.
Annette you are so inspiring, pleased to hear that you are back to your old self–well minus quite abit. Had the same ‘hump’ as you and likewise am feeling much better. The logic (science)behind the fasting regime would say that we maybe recovered faster. and took my own advice made up a big lot of chicken soup got it frozen in batches already, not for another bout of illness, but for those fasting or other days I come home from work and can’t be bothered cooking. That’s one of my big changes I now stratergize. It’s when I don’t have a plan that the wheels fall off
anyways onwards and downwards
