  • Yippee Cinque, my last fast on 5:2 for a few weeks will be shared with you, just like old times. Thanks for the info about ‘Cinque’.

Well done for the compromise LJ – and that lady sounds like a supportive and sensible dietician. After advising you to walk, I felt I should brave the weather and do the same. It was raining when I left home, then the sun came out, then I got caught in hail.

This just came up on my fb page, didn’t hear it this morning, so missed the callback. I just had a listen and loved how honest the two people were (ABC presenters) about doing 5:2: http://www.abc.net.au/radio/melbourne/programs/saturdaybreakfast/does-the-5:2-diet-work/8756066?sf102019192=1

Thin, that will make tomorrow extra enjoyable!

LJoyce, or anyone else, why don’t nasal decongestant drops work on me?

Thanks for sharing the topics you discussed with your dietitian.
Listened to a bit of Tim Spector but keep drifting off to do other things. But I liked how he said ‘every time you go to eat something, think about how it is feeding your microbes, those precious pets you have in your belly who are trying to look after you.’ (or words to that effect)

Today is going fine as a non fast day. (Apart from running nose etc)

PS To the maths wizard and possible font of all knowledge. Reading up on nasal decongestant spray (yes I meant spray not drops): one side effect is a runny nose!

I’ve just spent almost over an hour wrapping 4 presents. After much cursing and wishing I’d just bought a big gift bag, I finally have everything wrapped and decorated. I’ve just figured out how easily tissue paper is to tear!! The pressies are for my cousins eldest who just got engaged – all pieces of an entertaining set (bowls, platters, jug decorated in a mottled blue green glaze)

Cinque – I have a runny nose from allergies all year round. My doctor has prescribed rhinocort nasal spay as well as claratyne. I’m meant to use the spray twice a day and the claratyne as needed when the allergies are bad. He has said that rhinocort is only effective if used daily as it takes time to change and stabilise the problem – essentially he has prescribed the spray as an ongoing treatment for the chronic condition and the claratyne as an acute solution. I have noticed that if I forget to use the spray as regularly as I am meant to it really doesn’t work well and I’ll have a runny nose.
There are two other reasons that your nose may still be runny after using it. Using the spray means you are lubricating the nasal passages. The liquid that you spray in may run out. Also, if you are trying to shift mucus that is thick, the lubrication from the spray can move things along. (Sorry for the gross topic everyone.)

Thin – are leaving on holiday soon?

    FD for me tomorrow too.

LJoyce. Spector says the same. Also that you pick up skin microbes from your dog, but not your cat. I can see why. I am currently babysitting a dog and going next door to feed the cat. The dog has ambitions to be a lap dog. The cat takes the food but won’t come near me.

CalifDreamer. Thanks for the link. Grains ordered, delivery should be about 2 Aug.

Thanks LJoyce. I was expecting instantaneous relief. I’ll be patient.

Penguin – what I find amusing is that many of the dogs that think they’re lap dogs are huge and can barely fit much more than their head on a lap. My brother-in-law has owned 4 german shepherd’s over the years, all but one of them thought they belonged in his lap. He’s a large man, but not that quite that big. His last dog finally settled for my B-I-L sitting at one end of the sofa, putting his head on his lap and then stretching out along the rest of the sofa. There was no room for my sister, she had to sit elsewhere.

Cinque – when either my allergies pick up or I have an upper respiratory infection I make sure I use my second dose of the nasal spray 2 hours before bed and I also take a claratyne at the same time (not in the morning). This is because while the runny nose annoys me through the day, at night when I’m trying to sleep my irritation ratchets up to a whole new level, so it’s always my most important time to minimise the problem. The 2 hours works better for me than closer to bed time – I think it gives time for the medications to work and for me to clear my sinuses a bit.

    Done. Thanks LJoyce.

Cinque, be careful with over the counter nasal sprays. Some can cause a rebound effect. After a while when you don’t use them, you nose gets totally blocked, even after the cause of the allergies is gone. I had this happen about 20 years ago after I had a cold. I just kept using the spray because my nose was blocked and became dependent on it. It took an uncomfortable week or two to get off of it.

Have you ever tried a neti pot? These work really well to clear your nose during a cold or from allergies and it’s more natural, using water with a pinch of sea salt. https://www.amazon.com/Aromatic-Salt-Premium-Ceramic-Green/dp/B01LOUBZGC/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501349115&sr=8-1&keywords=neti+pot

LJoyce, I laughed when I read your post about a healthy biome dating service and was thinking about names for one that would be exclusively for healthy bug exchange. “Healthy Bugs are Us!” Or “Date a Bug” or perhaps skip the middle man and avoid the date altogether – go straight for the poop! Instead of Burgers to Go it could be….oh…never mind. 😄

Penguin, I’m glad you were able to order the grains online. It takes a week or so of small batches, depending on the quantity of grains, to get enough to ferment a few cups at a time, but mine have been going for a couple of years and several of my neighbors have grains from my batch.

Good morning all. Wow seems like only a few days since I last logged on and there’s pages of posts to catch up on! Busy day today so only time to skim through and a quick post.

Ljoyce extremely windy here yesterday too with a temp of 27. Weird – the middle of winter and slept with only a sheet. No storms here and unfortunately still no rain.

Intended extended fast didnt happen last week. Very happy with scales this morning though- 65.4 so only 0.4 to go to reach goal weight. BMI is 24.1.

Miss D is going to a friends to play this arvo so will get stuck into my study. I should finish the last of my first 5 units by the end of the day ready to submit. Quite chuffed that I had 8 weeks to get them all done and I’ve done it in 3.

Must go – lots to do. Happy sunday everyone.

Skip all my posts Gday, they are talking about snot!
Good luck with your study, well done with the scales!

Thanks Cali, the spray has warnings to only use it for three days. It makes a slight difference I think. I do know neti pots and even the easy alternative of using a squeeze bottle, but I have always been a bit nervous of the idea. Maybe today is the day.

Fast Day for me, about to have my coffee. Must put mushrooms to soak for miso soup tonight!

Hello fellow fasters and those of you who are having a nice normal eating day!

An early start this morning to take DD to her friends’ house to begin their exciting road trip north. Four of them are going to Karijini and then Ningaloo to swim with whale sharks.

Yes, LJ, OH and I are off to Thailand on Wednesday for some dental tourism with a short holiday tagged on. I’ll be reverting to 6:1 for the first 2 weeks starting with the travel day, when I’ll attempt a 24 hour fast from dinner the evening before. The following week will be a ‘normal’ FD as we’ve rented a condo and I’ll be surviving on miso soup sachets (no cauliflower soup) and, on the third Wednesday, I’ll be attempting another 24 hour fast but from breakfast buffet to breakfast buffet. I’ve never done this and wonder whether eating in the morning will make me feel hungry all day and whether I’ll over-eat at breakfast. We get home very early on the following Sunday so it will be straight back into another FD with cauliflower soup & the evening meal awaiting me in the freezer. So, the FDs are sorted but who knows what will happen on the NFDs? I suspect that I’ll avoid a lot of the foods that I’ve previously enjoyed in SE Asia since rice and noodles are no longer part of my diet. But I don’t think I’ll be following in DD’s footsteps and resorting to deep fried insects.

Fasting with LJ and Cinque today and I really need it. The past two days have been awful. I’m reminded why I don’t do any baking or ‘treat’ making. I offered to make a slice for DD to take somewhere and, although it was ridiculously sweet, I could not stop picking at the leftovers over two days. Sugar is so addictive. By last night, I felt positively sick both physically and mentally. Thank heavens for FDs because, although there is still some left, I have no desire to touch it today.

CalifD: any ideas how I can slow the multiplication of my kefir grains without slowing kefir milk production? Look forward to hearing more about yours Penguin.

GDSA: have fun studying and getting all the assignments behind you. By the time I return from hols, you’ll be in maintenance and I look forward to hearing how that works for you.

Thin, I do hope your daughter and her friends have the most wonderful time on their trip! It sounds such fun. Such a great opportunity.

Good luck with your fast day, curse that slice! Hooray for a new day, and how good our bodies are at dealing with the damage of the bad days.

And cheers for getting ready for your trip. I hope you find lots of wonderful food without rice or noodles!

@thinatlast – I am a lurker but not a Perth lurker and would like to try making some kafir. I’m in country NSW a long way from shops that sell fermented whatnots, we have three mail deliveries a week so wonder if the parcel post from Perth may be too long for grains to survive.

GDSA – that goal weight is so close you can almost touch it – tantalising.
Well done on the study, you are really motoring through that work load, which is amazing considering everything else you have on your plate.
The winds are still up a bit here but not as bad as yesterday and the rain has finally stopped (it rained pretty much all afternoon yesterday and through the night). The temperatures are milder though, I think the cloud cover must have trapped some warm air in. Hope you get some rain soon, I know it’s all too scarce up your way. I wish I could share, we get a little too much rain in the Adelaide Hills.

Cinque – The saline nasal spray that Cali described was recommended by my GP as well, specifically for dealing with sinus congestion that I had with a head cold. The idea is that it adds enough moisture to the nasal passages for you to clear the sinuses more easily. I can’t remember the product name, but it can be bought from the chemist. I hope you have a clearer head soon.

Thin – Not sure a dental holiday sounds that inviting – depending on how you feel after the dental work you may be doing more FDs than you planned.
Thin, the reading I did on keffir grains said that you can either eat the grains or blend them into your keffir if you have too many – it will obviously increase the number of bugs in that batch of keffir. Might be a useful super-boost when you need one – perhaps before the dental work.

Cali – looks like we are on the same wave length with sense of humour 🙂

FD for me, so far just one pot of my favourite tea. I have a veg & cashew nut stirfry planned for tonight.

Did you notice I added my first emoticon to my previous post? I had always assumed it wasn’t possible on my old laptop, but last night I was reading a few posts about 100 pages back on our forum and there was a discussion about how to add them. 😀

Thin, if you’re going to be gone 3 weeks your kefir grains should be ok in the frig. Just harvest the last batch and put in fresh milk before you go. I’m sure I’ve left mine go that long or longer a couple times when I just wasn’t interested in drinking it. They survived. (I’m a terrible kefir grain mom!) I’ve never frozen mine, and I think you said you didn’t have great luck with freezing yours, but you could always try that again. They slow way down in the frig. Keep it on a cold setting.

Your trip to Thailand sounds wonderful, but I wonder too with it being a dental vacation if there will be more FD than planned? Thailand is about a 17 hour flight from here, so it’s an exotic location for us. It’s about 7 hours for you, right? I love Thai food! We have several Thai restaurants around here. Lots of veggies and interesting flavors. I have a few Thai Basil plants in a big pot on the back patio. A couple of them are Thai Lime Basil and they really have a taste of lime along with the basil.

Cinque, my sister and I use our neti pots whenever we have colds or allergy problems but my husband will have no part of it. I offered to order him one from Amazon once when he had a bad cold, just to try, but he said, “No way! I’m not sticking one of those things in my nose!” I think they’re especially helpful for allergies because they clear all the pollens from my nose and sinuses. YouTube has several videos showing how to use them. I just use tap water rather than distilled because our water is pretty good here. You can use a pinch of sea salt and baking soda or yo can buy little packets that are premeasured.

GDSA, I was wondering what happened to you the last couple days. Good luck on your studying and getting all of that behind you.

Yesterday I had an over-the-top NFD. I didn’t eat sugar except for that in apples and plums, but I ate too much of everything else. I was 2 pounds heavier this morning. I’m having a CD today. I made a big container of Mexican Bean Salad and will have some of that tonight. It has only lime juice, a little vinegar and herbs and spices for dressing. It’s always better the second day.

LJoyce, yes, I see all of your emoticons. I always hesitate to use them because I’m never sure if they show up across different computer platforms that people are using. I’ve just been using the ones on the keyboard in the Safari browser on my iPad. Can all of you see all of these? 😄 😎🤠🐻🎂🍺😇🐔

Cali – yes I can see them, but unless I can figure out what the face is called I can’t use them myself. To use them on my old Windows7 laptop I have to type it out with punctuation marks and words and hope I end up with the right symbol. So far I’ve figured out how to make the following work:
    😥 🙂 😀 😎 😉 🙁

That should be enough to express myself until I finally decide to invest in an ipad – I just always seem to have more important things to spend those funds on.

Violet May, hi again, the last time I lured you out was when I mentioned TCP. How are you? I’m happy to send you some grains if you think they’d survive the post. Do you want to research it a bit while I’m away and we’ll sort it out when I return? I have no idea how to pack them or anything about mailing – perhaps Penguin can tell us how his arrive.

Thanks CalifD, I’m Ok regarding the upcoming trip and had planned to do as you say. It’s just that I think you or someone mentioned a cupful of kefir milk being produced whereas I just get a small amount daily (it’s plenty for me) but I wondered what’s making my grains so productive in that they multiply so quickly but don’t seem to yield the kefir that yours do. Yes, PerthGirl told me I could eat them. I hadn’t known that before.

Don’t worry about the dental tourism! It’s at the very end of the trip and is nothing major for either of us this time. The flights were so cheap that the savings of a Perth dental check-up & cleaning covered two-thirds of the cost! OH is currently reading out loud some overnight foiled terrorist plot involving Sydney airport/aviation. At least airport security will be on high alert everywhere but now that early morning departure to the a/p is looking even earlier. We’re trying Uber for the first time. Anyone else use Uber?

CalifD, I think you’re right – it’s about 4-5 to KL and then about 90 mins to Chiang Mai. This is like a bus ride for Australians. Our trips to Spain and Africa last year took 23 and 11 hours respectively. Are you having a FD too or does CD stand for something else? I love Mexican bean salad and those herbs sound terrific.

Thin, I have about 3/4 of a cup of kefir grains going at a time. I put them in a 1 quart (.95 liter) Mason jar and fill that about 3/4 full of milk. I leave it loosely covered (the lid set lightly on top) on the kitchen counter to ferment. It usually takes around 15 to 18 hours this time of year with the warm days. Are you starting off with a smaller amount of grains? You know that the more grains you use, the quicker it ferments and the more milk it will ferment. If you add a larger amount of milk and let it sit longer, like 24 hours or more, it should ferment the whole thing.

CD = controlled day, watching what I eat more carefully, but not a FD. After yesterday I needed to cut back but didn’t want to do a 3rd FD this week. I hope the 2 pounds is gone by morning or at least 1 pound, by Monday so I can meet my July goal for the challenge.

Have a safe and fun trip, Thin. Hope you’ll still be checking in here!

Thinatlast, it sounds like you are flying Air Asia and they have had some really, really cheap flights.

We were there last year for some medical tourism (new nose for my wife, not that she needed one).

Favourite place to eat was the food court at Terminal 21 in Bangkok. It seemed like the street food in there was better and cheaper than what little street food is still to be found out on the street. I’m planning to check out the food in some of the night markets on my next trip. I lived in Bangkok from 2007 thru 2009 and my daughter was born there.

CalifD, thanks for the info. Yes, I started with only a tea strainer full of kefir about 8 weeks ago and now that’s tripled. I think where I’m going wrong then is that I’m only just covering the grains with milk. From your post, I should add more milk and leave it longer. I’ll try that when I get back. CD sounds like a good idea for a compromise.

I made a mistake in my travel times too – it’s 5h 40m to Kuala Lumpur and then about 1h 45m to CMX. Also, after I posted I thought I sounded like a terrible place name dropper and should qualify. Travel is our big love and we’ve done a lot of it. But, we’re not wealthy jet-setters by any means. Our flights are bought when heavily discounted, we don’t stay in fancy hotels and we do a lot of budget travel things. And, (besides uni fees) travel’s just about all we spend our money on. We’re useless consumers, both absolutely hate shopping and replacing things that work perfectly well and haven’t upgraded a car in 13 years. By ‘upgrade’, I mean buy another used one. So, that’s us.

Cinque, I missed your earlier post, thanks for your kind wishes for DD, another world traveller on a shoe string. How’s your FD going today? Are you having a grumpy afternoon?

Hi Big Bill, you’re right! Air Asia. Budget down to the bone. You don’t even get water on board unless you pay for it! So far, they’re not charging to use the toilet. The flight that sparked this little trip was advertised at $109 from DMK to PER. I booked that and then later built the outbound flights around it when they went on sale. PER-KL-CMX-DMK-PER – total $310. Last dental check-up in Perth with scaling & X-rays – $298. Cheaper than staying at home!

Did you enjoy living in Bangkok? Ha ha re: the wife’s new nose. I’ve not been game for medical tourism but I could use a face lift. When will you go back? What will your wife be having done next time? We’ll mostly be in Chiang Mai this time and the night markets are still very good.

Thanks for the heads up on Terminal 21 Big Bill. It looks like fun. We’ll check it out, it’s just a few stops on the MRT from the clinic that we use which is near Huai Khwang.

@thinatlast what a great memory you have 🙂 Waiting till you return sounds a good idea especially if Penguin can pass on packing tips. I’m doing sort of 6:1 each Friday at work being my coffee and water only fast day and reading the forum reminds me of what I should be doing. I often mean to comment but by the time I’ve finished reading I’ve forgotten what I was going to comment on or I have to dash off and do other things – like this afternoon, I had to help OH with cattle. I’m small enough (and short 5’2”) to slide between the rails in the cattle yards so that saves me having to climb over which actually would be better exercise!

Thin, I don’t think you sound like a place name dropper at all. I said it sounded exotic because it’s so far from here and not a place a lot of people travel to without a lot of planning because of the distance. But it’s probably a more common destination for Australians for holidays because it’s closer.

I looked up the places your daughter and her friends are going. What beautiful areas! That looks like a very long drive though. I love using Google Maps and looking at different places on the computer. The Australian Outback is so interesting because it’s so vast and it looks like there are very long stretches with just nature preserves or parks here and there. Are there many petrol stations along the way? I’ll have to look for more pictures.

Violet May, when I ordered kefir grains from Amazon they sent about a heaping teaspoon along with maybe a teaspoon of milk in a little round plastic container like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UQMPJOE?psc=1. It took several days to arrive. The plastic container was inside a small box with bubble wrap. They arrived just fine. They were shipped from Michigan, so more than halfway across the country

Good to hear that you’re still fasting VM and that you can keep track of any weight gain by discovering that the cattle rails will no longer permit entry. I won’t be contributing to this thread while away so please pop up again when you see I’m back posting in about 3 weeks. ‘Overnight Express’ from PER can occur when sending to another capital city but is not guaranteed. To a country town, it will always take some days. Let’s see what Penguin says.

Also, and I am not certain about this but I believe I read some time back that Purple Veggie Eater who lives in NSW may have sent some of her grains to Carolannfud who lives in SA. They post on the Maintenance Chat thread so you could possibly enquire there how that went. Assuming I read it correctly. Perhaps PVE has some more to give away by now and hers wouldn’t have so far to travel. Just a thought.

Hope Cinque, Thin and any other fasters have had an easy day.
I made it to 3:30 before having a banana and I’ve just cooked a sir fry for dinner. It made too much for one meal so I’ve divided it and will have the rest on Tuesday. Unfortunately I only get a single NFD break between the 2 FDs this week as my infusion day (RA treatment) has been moved to Wednesday. I have fewer side effects if I do a FD the day before treatment, so Tuesday it has to be.

I’ve spent the afternoon ruthlessly culling my cookbook collection and also going through the vast array of recipie pages torn out of magazines or hand written on scraps of paper. All of the paper has been thrown out with a small number of recipies now typed up so I can keep then in a word document instead.
Some cook books are going out without keeping any recipies as my tastes have just moved on since I bought them. I have half a dozen others that I’d held onto just for 3 or 4 favourites. I’ll type these recipies up as well and then I can donate the books to our local book shed that sells books for charity.
The remaining stack of books looks tiny. I find that with internet access to so many recipies I just don’t need the books as much these days. What is interesting is those that I’ve kept – all of my vegetarian cookbooks; all of my baking cookbooks (breads, cakes, biscuits, pies); and my old family books that were either my mother’s or grandmother’s (2 are handwritten, one is a CWA book printed in the 1920s, and an old copy of the Green and Gold that was printed in 1940s). Most of these old books are so worn they are missing covers and the CWA book has nibbled edges where the mice obviously felt like a midnight snack (almost certainly while my grandmother owned it).
I have a fabulous pie book that I wish I could bake from more often, but I only indulge in pastry for special occasions. The book is called “Tarts with Tops On” by Tamasin Day-Lewis. It contains some really swoon-worthy pie recipies.

Thin – I think I hang onto things as long as you. I’m 55 and on car number three. The longest I kept a car was 17 years. I don’t do a lot of kilometers so they just don’t wear out and I’m always loath to trade in a reliable car (whose idiosyncrasies I know), for one that might turn out to be a lemon.

    Have a good night everyone.

I had masses of books and to make space sold about half of them to a second hand book shop. The problem now is that every time I go into his shop and see something interesting he says he got it from me. The space I gained is rapidly filling with new books. I am a pie enthusiast so I have “Tarts with Tops On” but have so far tried only a few of the recipes – I have too many others. This side of the world the title “Tarts with Tops On” has a touch of innuendo.

I’ve just realised that I probably need to translate a couple of things from my previous post:
CWA = Country Women’s Association (WI in Britain)
Green and Gold Cookery Book was printed by the Congregational and Baptist churches in South Australia as a fund raiser. It was professionally published and I think it’s still in print, although my old version has a now rare cloth wrapped hard cover. To help cover printing costs they allowed advertising among the recipies. These are a history lesson in themselves – there’s advertisements for wood stoves and also for “smart new gas cookers” that you can hire for 3 shilling and 9 pence per month.
For baking and preserves these 2 old books still have some great recipies. If I’m making jams and chutneys I usually refer back to them.

Penguin, The author of “Tarts with Tops On” had published an earlier book called “The Art of the Tart”. She obviously likes the innuendo. The innuendo works perfectly well in Oz as well, not sure about the US.
If you haven’t tried it yet, I recommend her cheddar and potato pie. I make it for family gatherings in a large rectangular swiss roll tray – then I can cut it into lots of small squares so everyone gets some. It’s amazing if you are a cheese lover and the young kids always like it too – not always easy to find a pie that works for all generations.

LJ, that is interesting to learn that the cookery books you’ve kept were mostly your mum’s and grandma’s. How good that you’re able to discard so many because of changing tastes. I once read that cookery books followed by diet books are the two top selling genres. I too get most of my recipes on-line by typing in a few ingredients to hand and seeing what pops up. I hadn’t made that slice in several years and won’t be doing that again in a hurry. 5:2 has really changed my diet in ways I hadn’t really noticed at the time. I never realised that the CWA was the equivalent of the WI in Britain.

Penguin, that’s so funny about the book shop and the tarts. You make me laugh a lot.

LJ, we had a bad hailstorm in 2010 and our car was totalled by the insurance company. I was so attached to the car that we bought it back from the insurance company for salvage and then had all the damaged panels re-built ourselves. Came out $3K ahead and still have the car. I did once buy a brand new car in 1978 when I finished uni. (Penguin, it was a burgundy, V8 sports car).

In uni, my grandma bought me an old bread van from my uncle’s firm for 50 quid. It once got stolen and was found on the river bank half floating with the tide in the River Thames. Police said bring a tow truck as it will never run again but I couldn’t afford one so my room mate and I drove to London in her VW bug with a piece of rope. The police by then had pulled it out of the river and when I produced the ignition key, it started like a dream and I drove it home! I loved that old Ford Escort. When I left England, I sold it for 50 quid and gave my nan the money back.

CalifD, you’re right, Karijini is a very long drive. About 18 hours I think. They planned to pull off the road and sleep in swags tonight. Do you know what a swag is? I have never been inland where they’re going. The gorges look spectacular. Re: Thailand, it wasn’t your saying it sounds exotic, it was what I wrote myself about taking two long trips last year that caused me to clarify.

Another FD almost done. A good day of posts too!

Forgot to answer your question CalifD, the petrol stations or ‘road houses’ were strategically spaced when we were travelling round the more remote parts of Oz. That was a long time ago. I’m not sure whether the mining towns, which come and go, have changed anything. The girls have taken a jerry can.

Thinatlast. I started on bikes and reluctantly moved to a 1952 side-valve upright Ford Popular, known to the guys as “the Black Pig” after Pugwash’s ship – £40 in 1962. That was followed by what must have been the first Land Rover the Army sold as past it’s best. No hood, no seats, no screen, second gear as long as you held it in, drive it hub deep into the sea when it eventually got so dirty we couldn’t find it. Totally indestructable and I loved it.

Thin – not sure that the Women’s Institute and the CWA are exactly the same but it’s the closest comparison I can think of. I think the main differences were probably due to population and land mass. Both groups were strong in country towns, but the CWA also provided a support network for women in remote areas who could easily go weeks seeing no-one but their own family. Until the 1950s most country women would have been members of their local CWA – it was the norm. My mother and both grandmothers were members although my mum left in the 1960s. When my sister and her husband retired they left Adelaide and moved back to the Riverland, my sister joined her local CWA group as a way of integrating back into country town life.

Thin and penguin, your stories about the old cars and trucks had me laughing out loud. Thin, I can just imagine you driving an old bread van and retrieving it from the river. 🤣 And penguin finally not being able to find his Land Rover that got so dirty he couldn’t find it. 😂

Our home is overrun with books everywhere. I keep putting off getting rid of many because it’s such a job to go through them all. I have tons of cookbooks too and I rarely follow recipes closely. I use them more for ideas and suggestions. But that doesn’t stop me from occasionally adding another. (BTW, “Tops and Tarts” is available on Amazon in the U S.) I haven’t opened many of the books in years. Like LJoyce, thin and probably the rest of you, I get most of my recipes and ideas online these days. I love Pinterest for recipe ideas. Do any of you use Pinterest?

After my CD of eating yesterday (and not being hungry or thinking about food) I am back down to 62.7 this morning, just slightly higher than the 62.6 two days ago. So unless I go crazy on my NFD today, I should meet my July Challenge goal and even do a bit better.

CalifDreamer, Getting rid of books is hard. I have done it twice. I gave away a lot when the RAF posted me overseas and I just couldn’t take them, and more recently when I sold some to make space because my interests have changed over the years. Some of them were almost old friends. Because I cook I am very often given cookery books as presents. Some of them I will never cook from, but there is usually one beside my bed. The old ones are often the most interesting. I am currently reading “Goose Fat and Garlic” (no prizes for guessing we are talking French regional cooking) which I picked up for pennies. I am unlikely ever to try most of the recipes, but it is an interesting read. The internet is useful for a quick idea, but I do enjoy just looking through a book and thinking – I’ll try that.

Good morning, I’ve been awake since 3am since I can’t breathe through my nose if I lie down. I have dehydrated myself and even tried a neti pot (squeeze bottle version) but I think they are for sinusitis not colds. Verdict: The nasal spray might as well have been a placebo. Chemist opens at 9 and I am off for some antihistamines. Hope to sleep all afternoon!

Good fast day yesterday. An easy one, maybe thanks to my cold.

Such fun to read about cars and cookbooks and dentists and airlines!

Best wishes everyone for a good day. Especially the Monday fasters!

Poor Cinque. I hope you start to feel better soon. I’m up early again, this time d/t OH’s snoring. Decided it would be more fun to read through the posts than stay in the warm, snug bed and listen to that.

LJ, the CWA is still active in parts of WA. I first came across them because they offer reasonably priced accommodation in several holiday towns (told you I was a budget traveller).

I agree, there’s nothing like the feel of holding a book. It’s not the same reading from a screen. We have an incredible book store in Fremantle. That man has books on anything you could imagine. We can get lost in there for hours. DD found some old veterinary science textbooks from the last century and they were fascinating. OH finds it hard to get rid of books. I’ve mentioned this before but the newcomers haven’t heard it – we started going through a trunkful of religious books in the shed that had been handed down through generations of OH’s family and ended up selling a religious book on ebay for USD10,000. You never know what you might have in your collection.

Good news with your weight loss CalifD. You and GDSA are so close to goal weight.

Good Morning all, posters, readers and lurkers too.

Hope you feel better soon Cinque.

Have a wonderful trip Thin! May the 5:2 force be with you.

FD today and a wierd day too. 4hrs sleep last night. Lovely dinner out with rellies, where the men shared a single entree, a little rice with everyone being somewhat sparing with it, and lovely Thai flavours in a minimum number shared dishes, no dessert. Very late to bed in the wee hours, thenup really early and didn’t go back to sleep after rellies’ departure. Busy day with appointments. A bit of the boring stuff due – a little housework and washing as well. So….. today will go one of 2 ways:

    1. We’ll be so busy that fasting will be easy
    2. It’ll get a bit too much, and I’ll start craving sugar/starchy carbs for the calming effect thingy.

Peppermint is all so far. Planning seafood in Campbells fish stock, or miso, or in a La Zuppa soup as a base. Seafood is frozen barramundi from Aldi, and calamari. Will look up calories for both. Will also have carrot, celery, broccoli, cauliflower in it. We’ve been enjoying strawberries, very low cal, and lovely winter oranges.

    Onwards and Downwards
    Merry

    Peppermint tea☕️

Hopefully my flurry of busyness has finished for the day, I’ve been to the hairdresser, organic market, bank, post office, supermarket and travel agent. I’m glad to be home out of the rain, although the morning activity did spur me to eat a large brunch, which I don’t normally do.

Thin’s discussion of travel has me hankering for some myself, although it’s not really possible until I finish renovating this house and move into something smaller and cheaper. I am one of those retirees who has too much tied up in bricks and mortar. My goal is to downsize to a smaller and cheaper property so that I can afford some overseas travel. I picked up some brochures from the travel agent this morning so I can dream about where I’d like to go first (possibly Canada and Alaska), I’m hoping it will spur me on to get these renovations finished and get the house on the market, I’m dragging my feet a bit with the work at the moment.

Merry – the seafood & veg poached in fish stock sounds lovely. I always think seafood on a FD makes it feel like a treat – although for me it’s usually prawns or squid added to a veg stirfry. I also often use strawberries on a FD, also because of their low calories. I went to the Riverland a few weeks ago and brought back a 10kg bag of oranges. I’m afraid I’ve hit the wall now and I just can’t face any more oranges for a while.

Cinque – sorry to hear you are still unwell. I hope the chemist has a solution for you that allows you to start breathing easily.

Thin – the CWA used to have a lot of properties – all states used to have a property in their capital city where members could rent a room when they came to town. Most have been sold because their value and maintenance has escalated over the years. In Adelaide CWA House is an amazing 19th century stone house on large grounds in Kent Town – still owned by the CWA as they make money to pay for it by renting out both the accommodation rooms and also the reception rooms. I actually had my wedding reception there. We had our photos taken in their gardens and then had the reception is the main reception room. https://sacwa.org.au/about/conference-facilities/ or more photos: https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g6197337-d6513886-Reviews-The_South_Australian_Country_Women_s_Association_Inc-Kent_Town_Greater_Adelaide_South.html (This property is adjacent to the Adelaide parklands) The photos worked out really well as my bridesmaids wore violet and the jacarandas were all in flower.
I have also been to a garden wedding there where the whole wedding was conducted on site (it’s actually where I go the idea to have my wedding reception there). There was a big kerfuffle in NSW a couple of years ago when the CWA wanted to sell their Sydney property – I can only imagine just how much a similar property in Sydney would be worth.

Penguin & Thin – I grew up in a house that was almost devoid of books, except for the very few I’d been given and the many library books that I always had. A sad state of affairs for a child that loved to read – it was my favourite escape. I had a dream of having a room as a library when I grew up. I almost got there in my current house with 3 walls of a spare room lined with bookshelves. Unfortunately the rheumatoid arthritics made it increasingly difficult for me to hold a book for any length of time so I eventually had to change to using an e-reader, which I find much more manageable. After much deliberation I decided there was no point hanging onto the books and I got rid of virtually all of them. Some I gave to friends, a few I sold and most I gave to the local book shed so they can raise money for good causes. It took 2 car loads to get them all there and it was a sad day, but there was just no point keeping them. I’d always rather that things I can’t use go to a good home where they can give someone else enjoyment. I have about half a shelf of books left, mainly english and foreign language dictionaries, an atlas, a few craft books and a very old family bible. I don’t know what I’d do without my e-reader. I read every day and this wouldn’t be possible without it.

Cali – I don’t use pinterest. My favourite sites are mainly Australian or British:
    http://allrecipes.com.au/recipes/
    http://www.notquitenigella.com/
    https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes
I will sometimes search for a recipie on http://www.food.com/ but I find a lot of the recipies on this site use packaged American ingredients that don’t exist here.
Otherwise I just search based on a description of what I want to cook, or the key ingredients. One of the thing I did in retirement was to get my electronic recipie files sorted. I have lots of documents with recipies that I’ve found online and want to try, or that I’ve made and liked. That was I don’t have to try and track them down again next time. As I mentioned yesterday, I’m adding recipies to my electronic collection from most of my cook books, so that I can get rid of the books.

GDSA – hope you go that assignment finished.

I am attempting to make keffir today. I bought a new bottle of keffir this morning. I strained it an removed the lumpy bits and added them to my nearly empty bottle of keffir then added about one and a half cups of full cream non-homoginised organic milk. It’s sitting on the kitchen bench. I’ll see what it looks and tastes like tomorrow. Then I’ll know whether this is a viable option for making my own. I’m hoping the few grains will multiply over time.

    Have a nice day.

Thanks for your good wishes Merry. It sounds as though the additional airport security measures haven’t disrupted Perth travellers too much today. Glad you had a nice Thai dinner & good luck with today’s fast.

Shortly after some tenants moved in next door, they invited us in and, as we walked through the hallway, she remarked that she had no idea how to fill all the built-in bookshelves. I told her that the owners had an extensive library. She replied that she would never put books on display because they make a home look so cluttered. I’d always thought they made a home look homely. Perhaps that’s old-fashioned thinking? I wonder if parents read to their children. I see many very young children sitting in prams playing with iPhones and iPads.

I know what you mean about living in your investment LJ. Do you have major renovations to complete before you can sell your house? The CWA house looks a nice venue. We stayed in a CWA apt in Albany. It was really spacious, had tired but adequate furnishings and I was glad I thought to take our own portable heater. It was reasonably priced, even cheaper for members. Good luck with the kefir. I’ve just put mine to bed per CalifD’s recommendations.

Thin, I have quite a few tasks still to do on the house and I’m trying to do what I can slowly to keep costs down. My biggest reno tasks include filling & sanding, painting (every wall & ceiling, most built-ins and all wood trim inside and out), regrouting, and bit of tiling. I also have a lot of little decorating jobs to do: replacing blinds, hanging pictures, towel rails, drying rack etc (I’ve bought them all, just haven’t put them up yet as I don’t really want to tackle it by myself). I also need to have tradesmen in to get the tiled roof repointed and cleaned and new gutters installed; some new doors installed (that I’ll have to paint); a lot of electrical work to get done – mainly lighting; the floor boards need to be resanded and polished; and I’m having part of the kitchen cabinetry and all appliances replaced. Last year I spent a huge number of hours getting the garden ready – I carted rock, removed clay, created new garden beds and even built a low dry stone wall (with all the rocks I’d dug up). I have a few more tasks left out there but it’s mainly maintenance now. As my block is nearly 1/3 acre it’s a lot of garden to maintain and I find that by the time I’ve kept up with the pruning, weeding, mulching, watering and raking I have little energy left for the renovation tasks.
My house is not large, (just 3 bedrooms) but it’s on a 1/3 acre and it’s in one the most expensive towns in the hills. By moving I can buy a home that’s a similar size but on a very small flat low maintenance block (I’m hoping for pavers and a large verandah rather than loads of grass as I have now). I hope to be able to free up about 20-25% of my current home’s value that I can use for fun things instead of just living in it. Although I love the Adelaide hills I can’t find what I need here, it’s all large sloping blocks or too far out of town, so I will need to move back to the suburbs. I am reconciled to that, and I know it’s actually a good thing to be closer to services as I age. I hate moving so my goal is to find a home that will work until I’m ready for aged care.
At the moment I’ve set a deadline of next autumn to get my home on the market. If I’m not ready by the end of summer I may be paying a painter to get things finished for me (what is 3 months work for me will probably take them 1-2 weeks).
My house is about 60 years old so there are lots of fiddly jobs where things are showing their age and need repair.

Hi everyone and welcome to the newbies (although your not new anymore)I have been reading all posts but just haven’t had time to write. Intesha those cakes are amazing you have a great talent. I know nothing about fermenting foods but I will google it when I get the chance. I know there’s lots to comment on but I can’t remember it all🤔 Cinque I hope your nose is better soon as there’s nothing worse than a blocked / running nose. Enjoy your holiday thin🌅I am still struggling to rein in my eating on NFD’S and my scales haven’t changed although I can now wear thermal leggings under some of my jeans that a couple months ago I could barely get on so I’m guessing some cms have gone. It’s been very hectic here, had a 14 hr trip (each way) to and from Sydney last weekend in June then a 14 hr trip (each way) to Dubbo NSW to get a ute for my son that was another weekend of lost work and bad food although I did try for healthier options. I am ok with FD’S and averaging 500 cals each FD it’s that little voice in my head that says” you can eat that today it’s not a FD” I need to ignore that voice. FD today enjoy your day everyone🌹

Thin, I think books make a house look homey too. But I also like reading books using the Kindle app on my tablet. It’s nice to have the screen backlit so it’s easier to read. And if it’s a very long book it’s easier to handle.

LJ, I hope the grains you strained out will start fermenting the milk. It’s certainly worth a try. I started my Scoby from a commercial bottle of Kombucha a few years ago. It was even flavored which shouldn’t have worked at all. It took over a month and the first new Scoby was small, but after that they just kept reproducing. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. Maybe give it a little extra time as long as it doesn’t smell spoiled.

Cinque, I hope the antihistamine finally clears your nose. I take a generic form of Benadryl and have had good success with it for anything allergy related. The generic version is very cheap here.

Bon Voyage Thin! From skimming posts, I see you’re off on an adventure!

Hi to Cinque and LJ and the newbies who I’ve yet to truly meet and probably won’t get a chance to do so until I complete my TAFE course in late September.

I will though quickly say to California Dreamer, that I’m originally from California. I grew up in a beach city 10 minutes from LAX and then lived 10 years in Sonoma and Marin Counties in N. California before migrating to Oz.

I’ve been getting so much out of my altitude contrast work-outs on the machine that sees me pedaling a stationary bicycle on either 100% pure oxygen or very little (rarefied air as in high altitudes) for 15 minute HIIT sessions, and subsequent hours in the hyperbaric chamber. I’m feeling so invigorated and a decade younger than I did a few weeks ago that actually took it upon myself to go out and do some of my own exercise this week, aside from the once a week with the therapeutic equipment. The exercise sessions went so well that I had plenty of energy left over afterwards. I was sure I would wake up with a ‘fitness’ hangover, but I didn’t! Not even a hint of one! Yay!

However, not all is going fabulously! Eating and exercising together are going the same way they did for me back before I was diagnosed with Hashi’s and adrenal insufficiency, before I had to take this 5 year break from exertion. The same eating and exercising pattern has already arisen which is that I become voraciously hungry as a result of exercising and eat accordingly, which is far more calories than those I expend via the extra movement. I truly understand why exercise does not automatically lead to weight loss and why I, at least cannot rely on that alone! This was even the case for me back when I saw a personal weight lifting trainer each week. I never lost weight. I gained muscle, though my fat percentage never fell beyond what it was before I started weight lifting! Yes, it is good that I’m moving and building muscle, though I’ll keep fasting, for sure!

Anyway, even with all that, I’m still within my goal weight envelope, so am happy and am so glad I’m fasting today!

Thin, if you’re not already on your way, Bon Voyage! Eat lots of Thai Food for me! (“Lots” on NFD’s of course.)

Minka, you’ve lived in some pretty areas of California! We love driving up to Sonoma and Napa for wine tasting and have family in the area. It’s about an hour and a half from here. We’re in the foothills of the Sierras now, but used to live in the Bay Area. (I’m an imposter on this Aussie site who snuck in with a jar of Vegemite. 😄)
What made you decide to move to Australia?

Minka, your post is the first I’ve heard of altitude contrast workouts. I was able to research a little on the internet last night. Did you buy the equipment or do you use it at a gym or other? It sounds interesting. Tell us more.

Redmoon, I think NFD are harder than FD in many ways. I had to journal what I was eating for a couple days and count the calories a while back to get a better idea of how all the food was adding up. It was kind of an eye opener. 😳 I don’t count calories on NFD anymore, but I’m more aware of what I put in my mouth. Over time, I’ve gotten used to eating less and I’m a lot less hungry than I used to be. I thank FD for that and making me realize I don’t need to eat every time I feel a twinge of hunger.
For the past several winters I haven’t been able to fit thermals under my jeans either. The jeans were too tight. It’s nice knowing that I’ll be able to this year when winter comes. Are Cuddl Duds Fleecwear available there? https://www.amazon.com/ClimateRight-Cuddl-Duds-Underwear-Leggings/dp/B01MRK7Q43/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1501536569&sr=8-2&keywords=Cuddl+Duds+fleece They’re so warm, and stretchy and cuddly. They sell both tops and bottoms. The fleece is a thin fleece so it fits under most clothing easily.
