  • Hey CM – I am so happy for you buying your skinny jeans. I am a real jeans girl and can’t wait to buy jeans I look good in again. Thin and CM – get rid of those larger sized clothes women! Neither of you are ever going back there again and the charity shop would love the donation. I bought two sized 16 jeans for when I went to see Morrissey because I didn’t want to squeeze myself into the jeans I am wearing now (the ones I can pull down without undoing – woo hoo) and give myself belly ache at the concert. (I still got belly ache at the concert but I think that was with excitement and emotion seeing Morrissey again after 10 years.) When they got too big for me, I hung them up in the wardrobe “just in case”. But despite them being brand new, I never want to be able to wear them again so they are going to the op shop. I am never going to need them again and neither are you two going to need your larger sized clothes again so get rid. I promise you it will be an amazing feeling when you do. And think of all that free wardrobe space to fill with size 10 clothes.

Thin – I cannot wait to meet up with you. All this travelling you have done. It sounds like you have had a very interesting life thus far and I would love to hear about it someday. I hope you are suitably impressed with my Morrissey (don’t worry if you are not – he is not everybodys cup of tea).

I used to like Sting and The Police as well. I remember writing to Father Christmas one year asking that my oldest sister got their lp’s. It worked because she did and now I own them!

So did you get up on stage with Bryan even though your friends didn’t?

I hope you enjoyed your grilled chicken salad.

Well, apart from that hot chocolate, I haven’t anything I shouldn’t today so I am going to weigh myself tomorrow. What’s the betting it will be 64.95 exactly!

Looking forward to hearing your weigh in tomorrow JJ.

    Nighty night xxxx

    Hi Thin

Congratulations on reaching your PB. It’s great that you are staying in the thread and supporting others to enjoy this WOL.

BTW I have to do 5:2 to maintain my best weight. If I go to 6:1 fasting, then I creep back up a kg or so. White foods and sugar are my triggers to put on weight. Raw almonds and Brazil nuts are my nibble of choice.

Well done on providing support to us all.
    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

Hi Bay, lovely to hear from you, thanks for checking in. I was afraid of that. Restaurant meal last night and I chose a grilled chicken salad and asked for the dressing on the side. As I had plate envy, OH gave me a slice of his pizza. Up 700g this morning. I mustn’t get complacent.

Hey, Thin, thanks for thinking of me! I am around, lurking at times, trying to keep up with all the wonderful jeans reports. Congratulations, and I second getting rid of the too-big clothes. You will never be that person again πŸ™‚ No complacency, though, for me too as it is so easy to relax and put those (kilo)grams on again. That’s why I weigh every day, helps to keep me honest, as well as me being a numeric nut and recording and graphing the daily movement. Two graphs to be kept now that OH has joined me.

CM, wow! size 10. I am like you, coming to grips with the changed body image, having been fat or at least large all my life.

Welcome back, Bay. I hope you had a wonderful time away. It’s magic to go away, relax our eating habits, and know that within a few weeks all the excess will melt away again.

I heard about the 30-day plank challenge on another thread, and am now on day 23 – three minutes! I think that might be as far as I get, though, but will persevere in the meantime. πŸ™‚

    Hi SH,
    Back story from Friday morning:

“I felt like I really pigged out yesterday (Thursday) and ate unnecessary extra things like 2 lots of raisin toast and butter, milk, and a couple of pieces of dark chocolate.

It probably wasn’t horrendous but totally annoying, so I have decided to make today (Friday) an FD to counteract my actions from yesterday.”

Well, I did do the FD on Friday, and it was a good one too.
Weigh-in: up .3kg. so basically I am stuck at a total of 6kg let go to date.
I figure I must be consolidating that.
I am still positive that this is a good WOL – next week will be some more downward trending for me!!!!

you guys have been sharing so much, bolstering each others confidence and motivating – yea!! thanks so much.

I have been following each of your stories and have shared the ups and downs. Congratulations to all – keeping to WOL; wardrobe decisions and celebrations etc

I am only at the stage of feeling looser in clothes not really moved down a size yet. Based on all your comments the time will come soon enough :))

signing out till after next set of FDs,
    Coast

    Hi guys,
    had a moment so thought I’d catch-up a bit. Can’t resist πŸ™‚

JJ, did you make the celery soup? I found it quite tasty.
I brown some onion, add the celery and sweat it and slightly brown,
add chicken stock, garlic, chilly, salt, pepper.
    Pretty quick.
I then eat it with zucchini and/or carrot strips, a dollop of plain yoghurt and a couple of drops of balsamic vinegar.
I made enough to freeze a couple of packs for later.

I have done a lot to walking in my life but more recently have decided that the exercise I love the most is dancing. So every morning before my operation I would do at least half an hour of dance movement to a radio station that plays the hits of the 70’s and 80’s – I love it – loud – as well as a mix of modern favourites of the moment.
So Thin and any of you other dancers, I am totally with you girls doing dance and housework!!! Can’t wait to start back into the dance movement again.

mmmm, interesting Barata – the plank challenge – must look that up.
Go, EA, that’s good positive thinking!! you will do it!!!
CM, glad you are feeling better and congrats on your PB too. well done.
Loved hearing about picking up those sale items – that’s almost as much fun as fitting into skinnier clothes πŸ™‚
Cinque, Melbourne was sounding lovely the other day. The Gold Coast is a bit grim and chilly at the moment. Still good weather for soups.

    Coast

    Morning all

Nice to hear from you Bay and Barata. A plank challenge – wow – three minutes!!! – wow wow wow. I can’t do a second, no kidding.

I saw a squat challenge today so I might do that if my knees let me.

So, I weighed myself this morning and I am down from 64.95 to 64.25. I am very happy with that and will now set my mini goal of 63 for next week. It is crazy to think that once the next two kilos are off, I would have lost ten kilos and I will be half way there since starting in May.

Well, I had better get on with stuff. Have a great weekend one and all and all the best to Saturday Fasters.

Thin – thanks for the encouragement, I have just come back from dog training and have been reading all the posts since my final post last night.

Coast – I did make the celery soup but used a recipe that I dont think was the best. It was celery, onion, one 100g potato and chicken stock. You then blended it when cooked and the potato was supposed to make it creamy. Unfortunately it was very stringy. Tasty though but very stringy!! OH would not have any and I only made a small amount so finished what I could and the rest went to the garbage disposer. I will try yours next time, thanks for the recipe.

All the people getting into old clothes and those buying new skinny clothes is great to hear. I am finding my jeans are fitting so much better these days and the muffin top is shrinking!! I bought two pairs of jeans a couple of months ago, just before I started 5:2, that I thought just fitted me, but now they are so much more comfortable and looser. They were a size 14 and I would not go to a size 16, stubborn me!! So happy now that they are fitting much better.

This morning I weighed myself and expected the worst. BUT I was pleasantly surprised to see the scales were being kind and told me 76.4. Could not believe it so jumped on and off a couple of times and got the same result. Hooray!!! Now just have to be good over the weekend so I dont put it back on!!!!!!!!!

Here it is now lunch time and I am on my second coffee for the day. Have some housework to do, cleaning the stove and clothes washing which will keep me occupied then put on dinner. 16YO wants Finnish/Swedish beef again before she starts work and I will have this tonight with salad. I will make a Thai style salad.

I shall look in again tonight so until then hope everyone has a good day/weekend…..JJxxx

EA, well done. I didn’t realise you were going for 20 kgs. You gave us some statistics a while back (was it your weight or BMI?) and I remember thinking you already sounded pretty trim. You’ll be a domestic goddess with all that weight gone.

OK Coastcat, we’re dancing together. 6kgs melted away already, that’s cool.

Barata wow, I think I know what planking is. Three minutes on what? I could manage that in bed but it probably doesn’t count.

I’ve just managed the 180 seconds (three minutes!) Only problem, it gets a bit boring, so I make sure there is something on the radio to listen to. Haven’t seen any results yet though. πŸ™ That’s three minutes on forearms and toes. Can’t see my back (which is supposed to be straight) but it probably doesn’t resemble a plank – or a very warped one πŸ™‚

You will be having to replace those size 14 jeans shortly, JJ. Great feeling, and well done!

Two more windows cleaned – spring cleaning well under way.

Hey Barata & Bay. Great to hear from you both. Planking….hey now there’s a challenge! You can come clean my windows any time….they’re huge & high!

Thin, glad you’ve also hit the sales (& scales!) with success. FD tomorrow?

JJ, happy dancing for you this morning. Well done. Now we both have to be good this weekend! Another challenge!

Thanks EA. congrats on moving off 64.95. If you’re going for another 10kg you’ll vanish or have I missed something…maybe you’re REALLY short! Tried the op shop for jeans a couple of weeks ago. Couldn’t find much apart from ones from Target & Kmart. Might try a diff store next time as I came out feeling itchy all over……felt icky & went home for s shower! Will do as instructed & get rid of my big clothes! Enjoy your HC.

Don’t worry Coast it will happen for you. It does come in waves with no logic to it at all. Stick with it & you’ll be fine.

Enjoy the rest of your Saturday losers! GO FREO!!

    CM XX

Thanks CM – lol, yeah maybe try a different op shop next time but I am very pleased to hear that you will be off loading your clothes.

Thin and CM – I was around 72/73 when I started the 5:2. I am pretty short and have a very slight bone structure and not much muscle mass. So my weight was all fat. I would love to get back to 52 kilos but will have to see what my body does. See, I was always the skinny one (to the point of getting teased at school) and it took a long time for my brain to realise that I now couldn’t eat what I want and not put on weight. I have only weighed in the 70’s before when heavily pregnant but my weight stayed up after having the toddler and I felt I was on a downward spiral. It was only by chance I heard about the 5:2 and went for it immediately. It was my light bulb moment. It has saved my life I have no doubt.

My weight all goes on my chin and tummy as well and I was getting fed up with people asking me “when the baby was due”. One time a girl asked me in the shop by the checkout. My lovely teenager burst out laughing. I went and sat in the car and scoffed crisps but hid them when the same girl walked past. I didn’t want to be like that but couldn’t stop myself until i went on the 5:2.

So, I have a lot of gratitude towards Dr M. for writing that book to get me started and a lot of gratitude to all of you guys for sharing the journey with me – your support, your tricky days and your success stories.

    xxxx

And we’ve enjoyed having you along for the ride EA. Glad you explained all that because you know how I am gradually building this picture in my mind about your mysterious life in the cabin in the woods at the end of a very long road leading from J’up McDonald’s, with your family all sporting well-pressed clothes and then with CM’s comment, I had a fleeting moment that you guys could be the seven dwarfs.

JJulie, I missed your post before mine somehow this morning – FYI, you only jump up and down on the scales when you DON’T like what you see the first time. Congratulations though.

CM, having similar trouble finding things – all I want right now is a smart-looking track suit to replace my L size one as I walk a lot. You can find any colour you want as long as it’s grey (blah) and nothing under XL. Back when I was XL, everything seemed to be XS, now it’s the other way round. I walk down the clothes aisles and can’t find anything small enough. Yes, FD tomorrow. I had a short-lived fantasy that I’d skip a FD every other week. Bay confirmed what I already knew, it won’t work. So I had a quesadilla instead. Gawd I’m hopeless sometimes. Hey, that Spanish theme didn’t last long without Merry to spur us on.

Ha! The seven dwarfs. You’re a hoot Thin…..how your mind must work…..fairies at the bottom of the garden too!! EA, we glad you’re with us, have hung around & also managed to click with 5:2 – how lucky are we, to have found something that actually works. We must all get together one of these days!

Ain’t that that the truth, Thin. When we look for new clothes we can’t find anything & when we’re on a budget we see all those fab things that we just HAVE to have!! Have a look at TarJay (Target for the uninitiated!). I like some of their track/yoga pants & have a few pairs. Then you can team them with a nice colourful top.

Had Chilli con carne last night & Portuguese chicken with guacamole tonight. Ok maybe it wasn’t Spanish chook but it was close! CM xx

I remembered the Spanish theme! But I am not sure if I followed it properly. Is it meant to be meals for Fast Days, or Low Calorie meals or just yummy ones? Anyway I made Spanish Sardines on Toast http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1664635/spanish-sardines-on-toast yesterday morning for a Non Fast Day brunch. So yummy! Miso the cat was impressed too, because she got the juice out of the tin. Her favourite.

I hope you find your perfect tracksuit Thin!

Isn’t it weird where weight goes on? Mine likes to go on around the top of my arms and (embarrassingly) in that underarm boob place too (and potbelly). And then it is the last place it comes off! That’s why my goal is to wear sleeveless tops!

Cheers to anyone Fasting today, I hope it is a lovely one. And as for those on a Non Fast Day? I hope it is a lovely one too!

I saw the planking challenge! Like doing a pushup and staying pushed up (with elbows on the ground thank goodness). Good for core strength. I tried it and managed to stay up for 20 seconds, but that is as far as I went. Cheers for three minutes!!!!

Cinque – re spanish theme – whatever rocks your boat! Mine were NFD, but would have suited FD as I had stir fried garlic cabbage under the chilli with a dollop of yoghurt. A big salad with the spicy chook – but maybe substitute the guacamole with yoghurt. I’m not a sardine kinda girl, but I’m sure they were delish.

Have a great day everyone. CM xx

Firstly, what started the planking???? Did I miss something

Barata, I am amazed…..3 minutes of planking????? I wonder should I try it????

CM, thanks yes I was happy dancing on and off the scales
as I did not believe it!!! Also I bought jeans at both Rockmans and Susan Grae when they have been on sale and both times they have only been $20 each. You just have to wait for the sale…..I dont buy full price anything these days!!!

EA, thanks for sharing your story. How terrible you must have felt! Glad you have found 5:2 and also this group as we will be here to listen to you when you are feeling down. I have received so much encouragement along the way since I joined this group and it has only been since July for me. If I do something wrong there is no judgement, no laughing at and no finger pointing, just encouragement to get back and start again. So Stay with us as we are happy to have you along for the journey.

Thin, you made me laugh ……again!!! I was just so surprised that for so long I had been stuck on the 77 treadmill that could not believe I had finally broken it!!! And yes isnt it always the way that you cant find things when you want them but they were there when you didnt!!!!

CM, forgot about the spanish theme, thanks for reminding me. I will have to try andthink of some interesting meals for the week to come.

Cinque, Spanish Sardines on Toast? Sorry not for me. Here I am of Finnish/Swedish decent and I cant stand the herrings in sauces that every Finn loves. I am not the best fish eater!!! I have tried various sushi and there are some I will eat again, but it really depends on which fish it is!!!
I will eat prawns, squid, scallops and just love Salmon. I will try to find a recipe for Spanish prawns.

My weight comes off firstly around my face and then lastly around my behind. I am glad that my stomach has definitely reduced over the last few weeks and also some off my hips cause I feel my jeans are more comfortable. I have had problems with these jeans that seem to sit on your hips as they always leave you with muffin tops.

This morning I weighed myself as usual and still happy that I have not changed. So with all the talk of us trying on old clothes and getting into new sizes I decided to try on a dress I wore only once about 3 years ago for a family reunion, then could not get into again as it was sooooo tight!!!!
I was again really surprised that yes I can get into it and it fits better than when I first wore it!!! I am so happy that everyone has helped me with this weight loss journey and thank you all for the support and encouragement. I have now lost kg and know that I can loose more. Getting into that dress has meant so much to me. I have other clothes that are of different sizes that I can now aim to get back into.

I am feeling good and looking forward to FD tomorrow.

Catch up with you all later today…….JJxx

The planking is a challenge on another thread, and I often check through the recent posts, so I saw it, worked out what it was…. and then moved on to the next post πŸ˜‰

Oh dear, does anyone like sardines, besides me and my cat?

Your Portuguese chicken sounded delicious CM! I wish I could pass a plate through the monitor and get it filled up!

JJ how nice to get back into that dress!
I had a lovely time a couple of days ago trying things on, and making piles of things that fit nicely, that might fit nicely soon, and a few things to be donated to the Op Shop. Yes!

Cheers to you all, it is lovely to be getting to know everyone!

Ah, it’s lovely to have some company on my FD. Noon in Perth, had a good walk and not feeling H at all (he who must not be named). I am starting to notice a pattern of much easier FDs when the day before wasn’t an over-indulgence of sugar or fat.

Cinque, I don’t mind sardines at all. Problem is I don’t eat bread now (OK I admit I had that tortilla last night & OH’s slice of pizza because I’m an idiot sometimes) and they’re no good without toast.

JJulie, I have never liked these hipster jeans and one of my best moments on this journey was fitting back into my high-waisted pants that had barely been worn from a previous but short-lived weight loss effort. I didn’t care if they weren’t in fashion, I loved them. But now they’re too big so it’s not an issue. I cringe when I see young girls – or anyone for that matter – with the low hip pants, short tops and the lardy belly flab hanging out over the top. Not a good look, no-one wants to see that and it shouldn’t be allowed. Well done for fitting into that dress.

Are you all better now CM? Where’s your weight today? I’m back to 60.8kgs.

JJ, I read about planking on another thread and thought ‘why not?’ Up to 210 seconds just now (how do I send an emoticon with a halo?) Great news about the dress fitting. It’s moments like these that are just so rewarding. πŸ™‚

I have saved the sardine recipe, Cinque, and will try it some time when OH isn’t home. Sounds delish! I will use my home-made bread.

There’s only one place for muffins, Thin, and that’s not on a person – not on my plate these days, either. Something else I can happily avoid.

I hope your weekend has been as enjoyable and productive as mine. Glorious weather (even got to 14 degrees), lawns done, freezer defrosted, taken aunt shopping, entertained, nearly ready to go back to work tomorrow πŸ™‚

14C in Wellington today? Brrr. I thought I was feeling cold.

Thanks to everyone who has answered my question about the planking. I thought of it then decided that I would not be able to do it with my shoulder at the moment. BIG doctor appointment tomorrow morning to get the final answers!!

Will catch up with you all tomorrow…JJxx

JJ what a thrill for you getting back into that dress! Great stuff! Good luck at the doctor tomorrow. Hope it goes well for you.

Cinque & Barata Think I’ll give this planking challenge a whirl tomorrow! Will report my success – or lack of it!

Thin, your descriptions make me laugh – lardy belly flab. Ha! Don’t call yourself an idiot…..OH tempted you! His fault entirely for.the pizza. Yes thanks, feeling fab again! I’m 61.6 today but just home from 15th birthday party. He always requests a pavlova, so I made one yesterday. I tried to be good, really! Only a couple of beers, lots of water, a few nibbles & a tiny slice of pav. Damage will be evident in the morning. No dinner for me tonight!

Enjoy what’s left of the weekend everyone. Happy FD tomorrow if it’s your day! CM xx

I so agree with what you say about waisted trousers Thin! I remember when I saw my teenage niece proudly wearing her new jeans that just about covered her lady bits! She looked gorgeous, but I was thinking, Oh dear, I won’t be able to buy trousers for years! And that was nearly 20 years ago! (Thank heavens for Op Shops). I’ve been hiding the waist highs with my tops so it isn’t so obvious.

Now I will be back in fashion! woot!

I had those sardines on my homemade bread/toast Barata! Hmm, it is hard to think of a substitute that would work Thin, although they would be good just plain on a plate, I think.

Sending good wishes for your appt today JJ. I do hope there are good answers and a clear, clever solution! (Good decision not to try planking!)

Barata we are having a hot spell in Melbourne, it stayed higher than 15c overnight, and 27 expected today. It is all everyone is talking about!!!! Back to cold tomorrow.

Fast Day for me today! Best wishes to everyone!

    Hi Thin and Cinque

Am I missing something? I continue to buy full waisted clothes from Sportscraft sales over the last few years.

    Cheers, Bay πŸ™‚

Hi all!! – Back from the Sunshine Coast and did 16/8 every day and 1 FD, and put on 1.2kg which I was SOOOO happy about as was preparing myself for 3-4 kgs – we ate and drank so well the rest of each day. We did also exercise well each day, which I think has caused some old issues with my back to resurface …. just doing everything very tentatively today, hoping it doesn’t turn into the full blown attack I’ve had in ’08 and ’10 which involved weeks off work and bad pain meds…. this is my last day off work, so hoping the return to normal activities will settle everything down.

I had a clothing issue! I tried on some things I packed 2-3 weeks earlier, and also just put in things I hadn’t worn in summer for a while… and it surprised the heck out of me that my skirt and pants were too big! Luckily I had dresses that would fit any shape, so survived, but just meant I didn’t wear the collection of t-shirts I took. And since coming home have tried on all the jeans I had lately been wearing, only to find they come down while done up… my body shape seems to have changed all at once… so I’ve relegated them to the big plastic box in the spare wardrobe….. I’m afraid I don’t throw things out, as I’ve been down this path all my adult life, and always end up digging out the old clothes… but I am going to put a sticker on the box now and put a throw out date a few years down the track, if this all works out the way I’m hoping.

I didn’t find any good sales in Oz, so ended up going out locally when I got home and got some good Kathmandu travel clothes that were on a great sale, and also some exercise clothing I was needing.

I’ve been a bit relaxed with my eating after arriving home, so looking forward to getting back to the regular activities of work to get back on track.

Was great reading the last couple of pages to catch up with all you wonderful fasters

Welcome back NikT. Good that you put a date sticker on those clothes but you are NOT going back to those sizes. Get rid of them.

Cinque, I can’t do sardines without toast – but they are such a great source of Omega 3.

    Well done CM. Great weight.

Good luck with the appt. JJulie. Have a wonderful FD Monday fasters.

    Hi from New Zealand!

I am half way through my first day and not sure what’s going on, but I’m feeling slightly euphoric!

Maybe that’s a good thing. I don’t feel all that clear headed though, and I am trying to help clients with software issues. Struggling a little to be clear headed.

I wish I could stop thinking about food though!!!!!!

I am drinking lots of water, which is something I have always found hard, so that’s got to be a good thing.

It’s nearly lunch time here and I’m feeling hungry, so maybe I’ll go out for a walk to take my mind off things.

Anyway, just thought I’d pop in and say hi. It’s great to come in and read when things feel a bit hard going.

    πŸ™‚

Hi Karate Kid, a warm welcome to our thread. What part of the land of the long white cloud do you hail from? If you’re struggling, make sure you plan your fast day food meals ahead of time so you know exactly what’s coming and to help you resist any temptations. Rather than try and go all day without food when you’re starting out, plan two or three small meals and choose low GI foods that will keep you full longer. For example, 30g oats with water and half a tsp of honey is 114 cals. This will keep you full for hours. A creamy, thick cauliflower soup is 103 cals for 2 cups. That still leaves plenty of cals for an evening ‘meal’.

Read Dr Mosley’s 5:2 book if you haven’t already done so. Drinking water is great for staving off hunger (it doesn’t help with weight loss though) as is keeping busy. Drink herbal teas, try all different kinds for taste variety, don’t forget to count the cals though. Hunger comes and goes in waves, it doesn’t build and build until you eat – so it will pass. I also am a bit mentally slow on FDs even after a year of doing them.

Ask us anything! We don’t know it all, we’re all learning together but we are happy to share our own experiences with you.

    Thanks for that Thinatlast.

I’m from Christchurch. It’s a pretty nice day here today πŸ™‚

I see what you mean about the waves – I’m not hungry right now!

How does water not help you with weight loss?

I have read the book (also Fast Exercise) so am keen to get past this first week and make this part of my routine.

I had 40g oats and 80ml lite milk for brekkie. I have decided that at some point today I will have another coffee as I don’t think I should add caffeine withdrawal to my challenges for the day. My coffee with a little bit of milk and a third of a tsp sugar is 25cals.

That will give me a little boost in more ways than 1 πŸ™‚

Bah ha ha – Thin you crack me up. I love the imaginative me you have created. Alas, you are going to find the real me so boring in comparison ha ha.

Thanks Thin, CM and JJ for your encouragement and kind words.

High waisted jeans are so much more comfy because they actually go over the belly and fit around the waist rather than dig in half way across the hips.

Well done on success on the scales and getting into smaller clothes.

Welcome back NikT. I hope your back gets better soon and I second what Thin said. Get rid of the big clothes. 5:2 is a way of life, not a quick fix diet. Keep at it and you will never need to wear those clothes again. xxxx

All the best for your appointment JJ. Let us know how you get on.

Welcome to the group Karate Kid and this way of life. I am sure you will get through today and it will only get easier over time so stick with it.

Well, pat on the back time if you please. Went to the “big smoke” yesterday to see a show. Yes, I did have a hot choc once we got to civilisation but that ended up being my lunch because the show started at 2pm. I asked the hubby to buy me a salad for me to eat when I got out and ate that in the car home (with no sauce). No fish n chips and no second hot chocolate. Didn’t even want the f&c (!!!???!!!) but did want that second HC. When I got home I wasn’t going to eat anything but started to feel hungry and knew I was having a FD today so didn’t want to push it. So had a one egg omelette with a bit of grated cheese and 2 pieces of nitrite free bacon.

Weighed in at 64.3 this morning so if I don’t hit the 63’s this week, I will eat my hat.

Have a good fast day fellow Monday Fasters. I’m off for a walk now and very much looking forward to the pile of ironing for this afternoons nap time.

    Hi From Qld,

Well I have read the book cover to cover – with a scientists sceptic eye – brought the body fat measurement capable scales and after a month or so procrastination have embarked on my first ever eating plan after acknowledging my waist measurement is creeping up and up and up…….

Hoping to a 7 kg or so weight loss, very interested in the other health benefits and looking for a sustainable eating plan to take me out of my mid 40s and towards 50 with continued good health.

Also my first ever post on a forum – so hope it is going to the correct place!

Not finding the first day too bad, but have had some unplanned mini practice runs when little suitable food for Coeliac’s available at meetings (generally my own fault for forgetting to inform the organisers) or on planes. Could be famous last words, will see how I am going after Thursday! Will be great to have a peak into how others have managed as I progress.

CM – yes I was really thrilled to get into the dress and it was not as firm as when I first wore it!!!

NikT – welcome back and glad that you were able to enjoy yourself and only put on 1.2kg how good is that and how quickly you should be able to get it off again, well done!!

Karate Kid – welcome to this wonderful group. you made a good choice and you will find everyone is really helpful so ask away even if you think it a silly question, we dont care!! Have a google about the 5:2 way of life and read as much as you can. You will also find 5:2 recipes online as well. We also share recipes amongst ourselves so if you see us talking about something that sounds tempting to you let us know and we can re-post instead of scrolling back the pages. I have saved a lot of the recipes so it is easy for me to find them again.

EA – you made me laugh out loud, with talk about eating your hat!!! Sounds like you had a good day though!!

Well I would like to thank everyone for the well wishes and thinking about me today with my doctor appointment. He has confirmed there is two problems. One is a supraspinatus tear. There is a muscle in your shoulder called the supraspinatus and a tendon that is attached and the tear is here. The other thing is bursitis. The bursa is a tiny fluid filled sac that acts as a cushion to reduce friction. In the shoulder it helps buffer your tendons and bones so they dont damage each other with your shoulder and arm movements. Bursitis is the bursa that has become inflamed by an injury. So at the moment I am now booked in to have an injection under ultrasound of steriods. I am unsure if this is really a good idea but he has told me that this could help with the inflammation and therefore relieve the pain. If this helps and I have significant reduction in the pain then I will not need to go through the surgery. So at this time I am happy to try this as the first step. He has also written a letter to the physio so they can help with some muscle building exercises. So there it is!! If I need surgery he was thinking of sending me to a guy in Melbourne who has the best success rate for this type of surgery. We shall see!! Anyhow I can not see anything like that happening this side of Christmas so I will still be doing my Japan trip in December/January.

FD for me again today and think I will now take the dog for a walk!!

catch up with everyone again soon……JJxx

HeloiseW – welcome to this forum and yes you are in the correct place, I am a Queenslander too. I am in Cairns. There are other Qlders on this forum too.
We encourage you to ask questions and will help in what ever way we can. Most of the people on this forum have been here a lot longer than me so they are usually the ones that you will hear the most back from. I have found all the information given to me has been very helpful and as you see we are a little family. I hope you enjoy your journey with us!!….JJxxx

Cool, two newbies in one day. Welcome Heloise and all the best for your 5:2 way of life.

JJ – I am glad you have answers to your pain so now a treatment plan can be put in place. All the best with that steroid injection and physio. Have a lovely walk with the dog. We have just come back from a walk so now I have to sort out lunch for the toddler. What are you having for dinner tonight? You have me rather hooked on omelettes now ha ha.

Sorry – I just had to break my typing to dance to the theme tune of In the Night Garden with the toddler. It is so much easier to jump around 8-9 kilos lighter (although have to stop my trouser from falling down. Being in-between sizes is a bit of a pain!)

EA – hahahah……imagining you jumping up and down with the toddler and your trousers falling down!!! What would the toddler think?? When I first read your post I thought you had typed you were breakdancing but then saw that I had skimmed over the other words in between. Glad your having a happy day!! Dinner tonight for me was going to be omelette with mushrooms, tomato, red onion and baby spinach. (I thought the red onion would help with the spanish theme)Everyone one else is having chili con carne!!! I cant because it works out to too many calories for me on a FD. I will have left overs tomorrow and make FD on Wednesday this week as it worked well for me last week……..JJxxx

Karate Kid, sounds like you’re already well organised & prepared. We have another forum member in ChCh who’s gone MIA, her name’s Kate and she’s getting married in October. And you now have someone else starting today to compare newbie notes with – welcome to you too HW from Qld, lovely goals for a healthier future.

HW, I had never looked at a forum before this one, let alone posted on one – and wouldn’t have dreamed of considering meeting people from the internet but I have made two lovely friends on here who’ve met for coffee and we have the promise of meeting the lovely (if somewhat geographically challenging) EA one day too. I can’t wait for that.

KK, sorry if I confused you about the ‘water not helping with weight loss comment’ – I didn’t mean by that that it would hinder your loss, only that the drinking of 8 glasses of water to aid weight loss has been debunked as a myth. Of course it doesn’t hurt, helps fill you up, is good for your skin & cells, staves off hunger and so on. It just doesn’t contribute to weight loss.

I totally agree, you don’t want to be giving up too many things all on one day. I love my morning coffee and I found that a herbal tea just wasn’t the same first thing in the morning. Then MK88 in Melbourne told me about almond & coconut milk which has allowed me to enjoy two brewed coffees at only 22 cals for the milk. It doesn’t froth but it’s so much better than skim milk & way less cals that HiLo. I made my oats with water when I was eating breakfast which sounds horrible but it gets creamier the longer you leave it to sit. I like the idea of banking calories for later in the day. Everyone’s different so you’ll find what works best for you. Good luck to you both.

EA – 63 tomorrow for you! Yippee. You go girl. Glad you had fun in the city. Being in between sizes is a pain – plus the fact that sizes vary quite a bit between brands.

JJulie – you’ll be able to meet the Melbourne forum people if you have that surgery in Vic. All the best with it and at least you have a good excuse not to try Barata’s planking. When you make the omelette on your FD, how do you cook the eggs and the mushrooms (non-stick pan/microwave) – or do you add fats? I only get 360 cals on a FD now so I have none to spare on cooking oil sprays, etc. As everyone knows, I’m partial to an egg before bed on a FD to keep the hunger deamons away at night – do you find mushrooms filling or are they just a diversion?

Thin – I bought a new non-stick pan recently, just a cheap one but a good size to make an omelette. I heat it up then add the beaten egg watching that it does not burn and then quickly turn over to cook the other side. Then take out of the pan and put on the plate. While the pan is still hot I add chopped mushrooms and chopped tomatoes. The juice in the tomatoes and mushrooms create enough sauce to cook them without adding anything else. If you want to add onions and spinach you can do that too. I add the mushrooms as a filling. I read somewhere that mushrooms are the vegetarian’s meat. If you think your pan might stick, lightly spray the pan with cooking oil but then take a paper towel and wipe away as much as you can. This will put just enough coating or seasoning on the pan to help stop the sticking but also decrease the amount of calories the spray will add on. Hope that helps. I hope I am adding up my calorie count right!!!…..JJxxx

lol JJ you made me laugh. Yes, I don’t feel myself until I have spun on my head and busted a move ha ha.

Thin – as JJ has got me onto omelettes – I thought I would chip in. Flavorstone brand is what I have and are apparently non stick but I have washed mine in the dishwasher once too many so they are not as efficient, I don’t think. I love my real butter so will put a dollop (well, all 7 grams of it) into the pan first but the calories really hurt the allowance. Mushrooms are great at only 17 calories for 75 grams. Sadly I do not have any for tonights omelette.

I’m still here Thin just busy busy. Been a bit of a lurker lol

I decided to add up my calorie count for my omelette so if I have made a mistake please correct me….
    2 egg omelette…..160 cal
    100g mushrooms….. 22 cal
    100g tomato…….. 15 cal…..total is 197 cal.

I had two miso soups today one with mushrooms 19 cal and one with tofu 20 cal.

Total for the day so far is 246.

I have a diet jelly made and if I eat the whole bowl it will be another 56 calories making total for the day 302 calories.

Other than the foods stated here I have had water and two black coffees no sugar.

Please advise me if anything is incorrect with my calculations.

    thanks…..JJxxx

    Hi JJ
I go by the measurements in Dr M’s book at the back. A large egg is 90 and a medium egg is 78. So for two eggs that would be either 180 or 156.
75g Button mushrooms are 17 calories (I have no idea what 100g would work out to be as my maths is shocking)
    100g fresh tomatoes 18 calories

So the large egg omelette would be 215 and the medium egg omelette would be 191 calories.

Really though, I can only assume that it is an average. I hope this is of use.

How are you feeling anyway on your fd?

Can I take a moment to have a moan please? I’m hungry. Usually I am okay and sometimes with my soup I cannot even finish it but today I am hungry. Maybe it is because I have reduced my calories in the lead up to this fast day, I dunno. But in the day I felt more hungry than I usually do and now that I have had my dinner with my reduced calorie allowance, I still feel rather hungry. Early night for me tonight me thinks. Anyway, moan over and hopefully I will have some happy news to report tomorrow.

I hope the newbies survived their first fast day intact.

Thank you EA for the calorie information. It can be confusing sometimes. I got the calorie count from Myfitnesspal calorie page. But really when you look at it there is not a real lot of difference. Anyhow I think my calorie intake on a FD should be 445 and I am way below that tonight.

I am feeling so full now…..I ate very little all day and then the meal tonight. I have had the jelly and an apple and then made a lovely hazelnut coffee which has no milk in it. I am hoping the calorie intake for this coffee is the same as normal. Anyhow the coffee really fills me up so no more for me tonight and we shall be going to bed soon.

Sorry you are feeling hungry and I think the best thing is to go to bed like I usually do or I start looking inside the fridge!!!!

Goodnight all and hope everyone has had a great day…..JJxxx

Thanks for explaining JJulie and EA, that’s all good to know. Yes I count 80 cals for an egg too. I’m on 5.5min boiled eggs at the present but before that I was doing a scrambled affair in a tiny non-stick pan. Hadn’t thought to add mushrooms. Using butter EA, that would still make a low-cal nonFD meal.

Angelbob2, glad you’re still around – how the fasting going for you? Not long until the wedding!

Hi to our newbies. & welcome. I just can’t keep up with you guys! So many posts. Only have my phone to post on so will keep it brief.

JJ – I’ve had issues with bursitis (in my hip) & went with ultrasound-guided injections (failed for me), rest, acupuncture, etc etc. what worked for me in the end (after 5 years!) was finding a good remedial sports massage therapist. My issues were in my Achilles’ tendon, which affected my hips, which caused the inflammation & subsequently the bursitis. I know you have a tear, & I’m not saying your shoulder issues are similar, but before you go under the knife please get a good Physio to tell you who they use for massage & have a chat. I would have done anything (incl surgery) to fix my problem & I would never have believed it would simply be massage therapy. Take care.

Aussies, we now have a new PM!! See you all tomorrow. CM xx

Not eating tonight. I’m hungry but I can manage without food. I think it was the rubbish that I ate yesterday which affected my hunger today. Made an omelette for OH but delayed my dinner & in the end I’ve decided to go without (ie can’t be bothered). Although all this talk about eggs has weakened my resolve!!! Nite all xx

Re non stick pans. Pls don’t you use olive oil in your non-stick pans as it leaves a crappy residue that you can’t remove, even with a gentle scourer….& then it looses its non-stick properties. I use rice bran oil which has a high smoke point, is better for you & your pans. Because of the smoke point of the oil, it doesn’t have the nasties caused by the breaking down of the oil when smoking at low temps. The number of pans I chucked out before I knew about this really bugs me. That’s it from me….sermon over…. Doctor CM xx

You call that keeping it brief CM? Almost as long as my ramblings. Excellent advice, thanks! You’re so knowledgeable about so many things. Never knew that – explains why coconut oil is so good for stir frying then as it has a high smoke point. Will you be in the 60s tomorrow?

Yeah a new PM, wow, I was completely out of touch, didn’t even see it coming. I’d stopped watching the ABC because I found it raises by blood pressure.

Your welcome Thin! They never tell you this stuff when you buy pans. Ends up costing a fortune….you use the wrong oils & then guess what? You buy some more pans!
As for my brief replies….Once I start answering a post I can’t see it on my phone……hence my repeated ramblings! Once I post, I see everything again & then want to say something else! Oh well bedtime, me thinks. 60s tomorrow? No, I don’t think so, but wouldn’t it be nice. Nite xx

Thanks for the tip on olive oil and non stick pans! I’m good thanks wedding is 2 weeks this Saturday! Hens night on Saturday which I’m really looking forward to. Fasting is good thanks. Yesterday’s was hard . I have lost 2 kg in a month and 7cm from around my belly button which is where I carry all my weight.
Nice to see someone else from chch here!
