Day 5 California FD
Back down in the 50โs at 59.4 this morning. Today is my usual Monday FD. I see that I have a lot of company fasting, all over the world! Have a great day, everyone.

2nd post
Achieved another gold star and made it with 2 coffees and water. I hope tomorrow I will be back to where I was at the beginning of January. Then I just need to get back to where I was pre foot op and make some headway into new territory before the next big wave knocks me off course for a while.
Well done everyone – if you are reading this you are still on course x
Day 5- Colorado USA – FD (3rd post)
Renovations on kitchen started today. Had NO IDEA demolition would proceed so quickly.
We suddenly have no access to dishes, pots, pans, nor appliances. Worse no sink & no water. Luckily the refrigerator is still plugged in so no food spoilage…… HOWEVER our well-laid plans for weekly menu are totally out the window. Oopsies!
All the expensive stuff will get double-wrapped & moved to the freezer. May not have a usable kitchen for 3 or 4 more weeks! ๐ณ
Guess that could make fasting easier…?? Nothing easier than zero prep, zero food. ๐
Unfortunately, in the face of this new twist, OH has already ordered pizza delivery for dinner. Uh oh!!
Hi everyone, I would like to be part of the February challenge.
I just read an article on intermittent fasting, having heard a lot about it I am going to give it a try this month.
I exercise most days but havent seen any weight loss for a long time, I eat relatively healthy but will try even more over this month.
I aim for Sunday and Monday’s to be my FD’s of 40cals, but also adding on 8hour windows of eating every other day (16hours fasting a day)
Let’s see how this goes! all the best for February!
ccco USA FD:
2nd post: Well my FD didn’t go as planned. It turned into a 16:8 day but I didn’t count calories so it was uncontrolled. Tomorrow I will try to fast again. The first three days I did well Fasting but the last two I have begun to have problems and am starting to do disordered eating. I am not happy about that. Amazingly, I am not even hungry! I think I am bored with the Winter and being trapped at home like I was today. I need to recommit harder. Tomorrow is another day and I have already begun my new fast day! Good luck, everyone. Will be back tomorrow!
Day 6 – Japan – NFD 82.0kg
9 FDs done in 2018 … 10% of my goal. However I have nearly a two week trip coming up.
@frau_erdapfel, @ccco – hunger actually comes more from eating than not eating. Much of hunger is a conditioned response. If you ignore it, it typically goes away within about 20 minutes. Hunger tends to come in waves and just like a boat you can ride the waves out. I’ve read that true hunger isn’t like that, but I’ve never reached that point even after fasting for seven days straight.
Some things that help with hunger:
* drinking water, coffee, tea (all unsweetened)
* exercise can be great at suppressing hunger and it can also increase your blood sugar.
* avoiding refined sugars when you are eating
* chewing gum can help sometimes
* working and keeping your mind busy is probably the best solution
* etc …
Everyone is different. The great thing about fasting is that it will teach you about yourself. Then you can figure out what works best for you.
@nesslock2018 – Exercise is extremely healthy for you and has a great many benefits. However, weight loss typically isn’t one of those benefits. Weight loss can happen and typically does for people that are out of shape, but often exercise builds lean body mass which is heavier than fat. While exercise is poor for “weight” control, it is great for fat control when coupled with a reasonable diet. Many people tend to compensate eat along with exercise which simple prevents too much fat loss.
@coda – Way to go!!!! Personally I find water fasting much easier … but it was hard to get started, at least for me.
@ccco – I hear you about the winter. I have struggled with my weight a bit too this winter because the cold interferes with my activity levels.
I have almost 200 days of water only fasting under my belt. Even now I still have some fasts that aren’t that easy, but mostly I sail through the fast days now. It was much harder when I started. Most of the struggles though are mental. The body often follows the mind.
Minus .9kg today after one week. Total of 2.9kg over two weeks. I did struggle a wee bit in the evenings and can see the value of setting a nightly curfew… Macintosh our West Highland White Terrier helps with daily exercise but itโs hot here and our pace has slowed down. Just trying to do each day as it comes until I can find a routine. Delighted that this regime might actually work for me! Iโm enjoying reading all the posts. Cheers, everyone!
Celebrations for my daughter’s birthday coincided with a FD so I had to shift from Saturday to today for my second FD this week- that wasn’t too hard. However, cooking for my family is challenging as I am coming to the end! After 11 pm (Sunday) to 8 pm today on 500 calories, I broke fast by eating some lasagna I had cooked for the family.
Is a FD suppose to be 24 hours? I better read (again) and find out.
2nd post
Have established a 16-week training program for the half marathon and I guess having that goal helped me get out the door and “just do it”. Didn’t break any landspeed records, but did my intervals and just over 3 miles. Hopefully it sticks. ๐
Hoping that with three FD’s a week, adding exercise and NOT overeating on my NFD’s I can dispatch with at least another 10 pounds by the time the run gets here.
Don’t know if Bigelow teas are found internationally or not, but have found a lovely sugar-free black tea flavored “salted caramel” and it really hits the spot on FD’s.
Tried my first “quorn” chicken (vegan) filet tonight. Put a little tomato sauce and parmesan on it after baking and it was delicious!
Pacing myself for the last 150 calories of the day…
Day 6, Finlandn NFD
Good morning everyone! I had a successful FD yesterday, even managed to avoid the cake of the day when the entire rest of the country was enjoying them! Yesterday was Runeberg day, he was a Finnish poet, and I think yesterday was his birthday and he has a cake named after him. So 5.2 is the day to eat Runeberg torttu. Except me, but i have saved mine for today, they are too good to miss out on, and it’s just once a year ๐ I am finally feeling better after the flu, but am slow to get moving. I will actually leave the house today though!
@mjrbcd44 Have you done an half marathon before? I have done a few 10km but have been too scared to try anything further. I am a reluctant runner, or should i say a lazy one. In my mind i would love to be a runner, but don’t have the drive or commitment to become one. I train for the 10km and after it do nothing for 6 months then start to train again! Well done you for committing to it.
@ccco I too struggle with winter and boredom. In fact boredom is probably my biggest trigger for eating unnecessarily. I struggle with FD when i am at home, and breeze through at work. Winter blues are hitting me harder every year….Santa gave me a bright light this year which could be helping ๐
Have a great day everyone!
Day 6 Belfast CD OMAD
Blew my fast day yesterday ๐ routine is the backbone of my success and yesterday, the routine went out of the window. Must do better!
@ Borealis thank you for the links
@onahealthyhigh you made my mouth water!
@michelinme – nothing like Percy Pigs! ๐คช
@ciren2 that dragon can fly in a wide radius. It got me too!
@danceforher A fast day usually starts from your last meal of one day and over the next day. For example, my FD would start on a Sunday evening at around 7pm when I finish my meal. I then consume my 500 cals during Monday. If you eat breakfast at around 7am on Tuesday, in effect, the fasting window lasts for 36 hours.
Off To Pilates this morning and then a snowy forest walk
Stronger Than Yesterday
Day 6 Wales ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ FD
Thoroughly enjoyed the feasting celebration ๐พ of my birthday yesterday…….now to repair the damage with a good FD!! Love the flexibility of this WOE.
Thinking of my fellow Tuesday fasters as I sip my black coffee, good lunck for a successful dragon slaying day ๐๐ฆ๐ง๐ฆ๐
Day 6 – Hampshire, UK – FD
I usually would have a CD or NFD but since the scale jumped, I’m feeling like I need to take it more seriously than last week, Also my husband is away until Friday so its a good opportunity to get a few FDs in. Friday would have usually been a FD but I am having friends round so decided to do Mon, Tues and either Wed or Thurs as FD so I get my 3 days in.
@happymargo thank you for the encouraging words, I needed them ๐ the scales are still not being kind, I am 0.5Kg up on my final January weight which sucks, I would need to loose 3.5Kg in 2 weeks to get to my Feb target, staying positive!!!
Happy FD to all my fellow Fasters….
Day 6, London, UK, FD (1st of B2B2B)
Back on track, I hope, after the alcohol induced indulgences of the weekend!!! Actually glad to be back at work where fasting is soooo easy to accomplish (Iโm with you on that @diana123), I seem to be perched with one butt cheek on this wagon, holding on for dear life, I really hope this 1st B2B2B of the month resets me!!!
Just a reminder if youโre thinking about indulging or missing booze – I watched a programme last night with a section on the negative effects of alcohol on weight loss, not exactly groundbreaking news, but I needed the reinforcement โ the body burns alcohol before ANYTHING else simply because it canโt store alcohol โ it perceives it as a toxin(!), so you basically shut down any fat or carb or sugar burning if thereโs alcohol in your system, and you end up storing the fat, carbs etc. until ALL of the alcohol is gone โฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆ too late by then as your fat cells have restocked!!!!!
@penz, the EFS phrase was coined last year by @mamacat in the February 2017 challenge!! I use it far too often though (unfortunately)!!!!!
@michelinme, that was the plan, so we were all on the same page, so to speak, as laid out by our host this month in post 1 on page 1, personally I like to know where everyone is and whether theyโre fasting or not too!!! It used to be critical because our host would be the one to complete the spreadsheet, now itโs self-service, I guess itโs not so important, but I LIKE TO KNOW!!!!!! When people post about the heatwave or the snow or the torrential rain, but not where they are, I always think where is that?????
@ciren2 Nooooooooo!!! Just reinforce your armour and SLAY those dragons whether with water, exercise or just reading this forumโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆ.. DO NOT LET THEM GET YOU!!!!!!! Stay strong, weโve got you!!!
@scotrodg I found once I actually started listening to my body, breakfast wasnโt even an option, Donโt get me wrong I still love a fry up or sourdough with avocado, I just have them at 3pm when I break my fast on a NFD, FDs tend to be 20:4 or OMAD. Test yourself and youโll be squeezing that window before you know it!!!!
@coda, whether baby steps or mighty leaps in the right direction all add up to the same thing โฆโฆโฆโฆโฆ.. moving towards your goal!!! Congrats on the gold star!!
@kerryn73 โ as with the mysterious โkringleโ of a couple of months ago; I absolutely refuse to google Runeberg torttu!!!!! If I see what it looks like, I would just end up searching for one in London, just so I could try it!!!!!
@bigviking, Iโve always said I would banish โmorningsโ (Who invented them anyway, whatโs wrong with starting the day round about 1pm????) I think you and I could start a petition to banish weekends (!) โฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆ. Maybe just in relation to food though โฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆ. Not work!!!! Like you, this weekend was a nightmare as @lilymartin once said โโThe fat fairy came along and overnight superglued a Mac truck sized spare tyre around my waistโ
@onahealthyhigh โ just for you โฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆโฆ..
http://www.marksandspencer.com/c/food-to-order/percy-pig
@at, are you back yet???? I hope the trip & journey back were all you expected!!!!
Good fasting today everyone, stay strong!!!!!!
Day 6, Cornwall UK, NFD
Managing to recoup my losses and today am back down to 61.7kg after my fast day yesterday (fist pumps the air) so hoping that I might finally be able to move beyond this little sticking point I’ve had for the last 2 weeks.
@happymargo thank you for your explanation, makes a lot of sense and actually I can see it must be nice to be able to join in for a relatively normal dinner with your OH. Good luck with your renovations as well.
It’s currently snowing in Cornwall ๐ This never happens normally, so quite exciting! Hopefully I’ll still be able to get to the gym at lunchtime like normal.
Day 6 North Wales NFD
It is snowing in Gwynedd too. Empathising with those who are a bit fed up with winter. This winter has seemed a very long one. I was getting exited about spring being round the corner after seeing the daffodils starting to flower. Canโt see them today though. They are all covered with โ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธ๐จ๐จ๐จ๐จ
Day 6, Belfast, FD
Day 5, 4, 3, 2, all NFDs
Quite an indulgent weekend. Six Nations rugby = a few too many beers ๐ The Ireland team doesn’t half make you stress out…
Started a pocket list for today..apologies if I’ve missed anyone or added you by mistake.
****DAY 6, POCKET LIST***

Good luck everyone x
Day 6….Florida…..FD
Oh my hopped on the scales this morning and they are not being very friendly. So, Itโs got to be an solid FD today. Iโve been all over lately, so Ivegot to get it rein in and tucked away. Plus, my belly feels like itโs 10x itโs normal size! Iโm up 2lbs!!!
My shower curtain and shelves finally arrived, so my bathroom is finally finished. So, Iโm back to regular scheduled programming. Funny thing, I did need to buy a new globe for the bathroom light. Iโm on my hands and knees scrubbing the floor and Iโm almost done and the darn thing comes crashing down. Glass every where, thank goodness I was not under it but the peices were so small, I swept twice and vacuumed. Still not sure if I got it all up!
The hubby thinks the universe is trying to tell me something…… I said yeah….. the floors not clean enough…..do it again…..Lol
Well….. life is a calling!
I talk a lot of smack for someone who tips over while trying to put on their underwear!
Day 6 NFD Stevensville Maryland USA My first true fast day stayed under 500 calories and was able to stay off the scales. This morning I found myself reasoning with the scales haha. Plan on a CD today. @ccco it is brutal here this morning 26 outside with windchill at 12 looking forward to spring when I can get out and walk the dogs.
In a world where you can be anything, be kind. Have a great day everyone.
Day 6 Brisbane Australia
NFD
I was starving and miserable this evening after dinner. Have usually been having no more than 1100 cals on non fast days. Tomorrow is a planned FD and I thought to myself that I am being ridiculous for not eating more on a non fast day when I feel this way. I felt like I have when dieting before, that each day is a sacrifice and I am miserable, when clearly this WOE is not meant to be like that. So gave myself a talking to and had a muesli bar for 200 cals. Felt so much better. Its almost as hard allowing yourself to eat and not feel out of control, without having that that “I’ve blown it feeling”. It is going to take a lot of time for me to control the feelings of guilt I associate with the words “food” and “diet”.
Onwards and downwards!
Day 6 USA Wisconsin NFD
Coming from a successful FD, and looking forward to a controlled NFD today. Activity will include taking a Tai Chi class, teaching a Yoga class and riding 5 miles on the bike at the gym.
@dykask you have great advice for avoiding hunger while fasting, and it helped me yesterday. Even though I may be aware of the points you mentioned, itโs wonderful to be reminded of them. Thanks.
Good luck to everyone today. Take care, Markie
Day 6, CFD, USA
Well, aiming for a CFD, we’ll see how we go!
Kerryn73, your comment about desire to be a runner, but don’t have the drive or commitment to become one, so resonated with me. In my dreams (in my literal dreams), I am the most fluid, effortless runner, who can run all day. In my waking life, I am anything but. I perservered with the couch to 5k program a few years ago, but didn’t reach the end. I can walk all day though so I’ll have to be content with that!
Day 6 MI USA NFD
Another cold snowy day here – 12ยฐ๐จ It makes me want to just curl up on the sofa with the pupper all day. It needs to warm up, and soon! I cannot wait to break fast this afternoon! Trying to stay strong until then and drum up the energy and courage to go hit the health club very shortly. Hope everyone has a great day!๐บ
Hello day 6 from NI slow day
Ended my fast at 1pm with a bowl of berries, plum and mango. A little natural yogurt, a sprinkle of pumpkin and chia seeds and I am stuffed.
@dykask – I agree and I am trying to do water only on fast days as I do find it easier not to eat anything than take the risk of something starting that I can’t control. I just find this cold weather so hard – even in work I have a blanket over my knees and sometimes even get a hot water bottle lol.
Day 6, Surrey (UK), NFD
I so agree @dykask and @coda, I too find it easier to avoid eating on FDs for as long as possible, for fear of waking the dragon! BUT this cold weather makes it soooo hard! Yesterday I lasted until about 7pm, when I had my one 400ish calorie meal, pre-planned. After that, I felt a lot better, so perhaps I really did need the food then.
This morning, my scales showed a 3lb loss overnight. Maybe my scales are kinder than everyone else’s but my theory is that it was due to a combination of water loss, the previous day’s fasting, and …er…nature taking its course in the bowel department. Anyway, I’m trying not to get too excited. To mis-quote a business saying:
“Scales are vanity, fast days are sanity.”
Have a good day, everyone.
Day 6, South Wales, NFD
Hmmm, seem to have lost my earlier post…
@flourbaby – what was that programme you were watching about weight loss/alcohol? Might try watching it on catch up TV.
Exciting snow news from Cornwall, Pembrokeshire – barely a flake here in my little corner of south east Wales, but very, very cold. It does make it harder to fast I think – I crave toast with butter and marmite!!
Day 3 UK NFD
Day 4 NFD
Day 5 FD
Day 6 FD
Catching up with reporting and posts.
Great to see the progress being made. Well done losers!
Right then. In the final hours of a liquid only fast from 10pm on Sunday until 6pm tonight. Just sitting having a coffee with a spot of milk (20kcal-ish) as a treat. I wasn’t hungry at all this morning, and although my stomach is empty I’m not craving food.
I even managed a run last night in the freezing cold. I was the only person out running. There are usually lots. Aiming for a solid 4:3 each week. I think I’ve been a bit undisciplined when breaking fasts, but now trying hard. The Every Other Day Diet book I’m reading is interesting. EOD is very different, but I would find it hard to fit into my life as I prefer to not fast at weekends when it impacts on the family meals. The thought of doing Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun one week, then Tue, Thurs, Sat, the next just seems problematic.
@penz (and others) I thoroughly recommend the free version of the Runkeeper App to help catch the running bug. I’ve used it for years to log my running. It also has a few training programmes to get you started and keep you interested. Fartleks and intervals etc. are great ways of making rapid progress, and can even be fun. I’d be happy to buddy-up virtually with anyone here who wants the extra encouragement that can bring.
My tips for anyone who wants to, or has tried to add running to their repertoire are:
– Don’t think you aren’t a runner, and don’t be put off by the athletes you see out there in your neighbourhood.
– Aim for a 5k or even a 10k. Signing up for a race 2-3 months ahead is a really motivating.
– Start slowly, but with a programme that progresses you with different runs. The Asics Pace academy plan on Runkeeper is my favourite as it’s really varied and gets you used to running at different paces without killing you, and the runs are about repeating exercises over around 30 minutes rather than distance.
-Run 2-3 times a week with a rest day in-between. Evening is better for you as your body is warmed-up a bit.
-Don’t beat yourself up if you stop and walk home, or just have a bad run. We all do.
-Grab a good pair of trainers. And make sure they suit your gait. You can usually get this analysed at a sports store, although there are some online tools too. And if you’re carrying a bit of weight, make sure they are suitably cushioned.
-If you’re aged mid 40s+, buy a foot rocker to keep your calf, ankle, hamstring stretched and supple. They cost around ยฃ12-15 online.
– If you’re still quite heavy and need to lose a lot of weight, I would combine running with cycling or a couple of Spin classes each week. I had lots of injuries trying to run my excess weight off before realising that I needed to diet to lose it. Swimming and spin helped me more than any physio, and I was amazed how much easier it was to run when I’d lost 10kg, and how much faster I got when I lost another 5kg . The spin helps build the leg muscles up around the knees without being hard impact.
@lynned
The programme was “How to Lose Weight Well”, + on Channel 4.
I had a slight issue with the alcohol science. It basically said that you’re body processes alcohol before anything else food or fat-wise, so consuming when dieting is bad. But does that matter as long as you aren’t consuming lots of it? Surely anything you eat or drink is burned as calories before you start burning fat. Why is the order of calorie burning important?
2nd post
@johnnyr thanks for the tips – very handy! I am just about to start taking up running again after a gap of 13 years.
@johnnyr – thanks for the programme link too!
Day 6 NFD Oregon USA (Warning LONG post ahead)
Oh I know it may not be a popular sentiment but I am jealous of all you Northern UK’ers that are seeing snow! We got only a trace of snow one day–Christmas Eve–and yesterday it was 57 degrees!! Very early for that warm. I know other US people in the Midwest are likely tired of cold/snow weather too but I miss not seeing it at all. Could head to the mountains, but not the same as on the houses. ๐
Speaking of the snowy locations–@flourbaby and @michelinme, I am in complete agreement about knowing “where” people are and if they are fasting or not fasting. Also agree with whoever noted the fact that so many who don’t speak English as their first language write so well!
For me I like to paint little mental pictures, and when I read posts from the UK, an automatic accent is employed. My Irish accent (in my head only–I don’t try it out loud) is weak and my German (@MiracleLou) is terrible but nonetheless, it’s how I imagine each person. @borealis I wonder what Iceland’s accent sounds like? Scandanavian? My Australian accent is hilarious (at least to me).
And because my geography of each country outside of the US is fairly limited, I like to imagine @belfastsink, @daffodil2010, @debster251, @coda could meet up for coffee if they so desired.
Or the London crowd (which includes for me anything ending in “shire”, Leeds, Cornwall, Surrey, Newcastle) could grab a pint (on a NFD).
Would the Wales contingent be closer to the Irish ladies or the London group? This I am not clear on but perhaps @missybear, @molij and @lynned would pick a spot between North and South Wales?
@happymargo and @Redrocksgirl could meet for lunch (though I’m not sure they are in the same part of rocky mountain range). And should any (or all) of you happen your way out to the west side of the USA, @annemarilyn, @awilson and myself could host a great party at a microbrewery in Portland.
OK, I digress….clearly.
@kerryn73 and @Penz–I am 100% a reluctant runner. Not graceful and not fast.
I don’t do it all the time and though I have done two half-marathons since 2013 they were very different and I know this one will be too. @johnnyr your post reminded me of that terrible word and training regimen from my first “fartlek”. More like a torture device for those of us who simply cannot sprint! However, I do agree that if you decide to do it anyone can train to finish a race. My first I ran a mile, walked a minute and in the end averaged about 10:30 minute miles. The second, I ran two minutes, walked two minutes and averaged 12 minute miles. Clearly not a fast pace, but at this stage of my life–finishing is the goal and preserving my joints is paramount. So will definitely be walk/running again but as @johnnyr said–setting the goal and committing to the race does help motivate me.
In both of the previous instances, I did not lose one OUNCE of weight while training for the races. @dykask you are spot on as I definitely ate/compensated for my exercise. This time, I’m hoping that my regimen of fasting days will keep me honest and would be so lovely if I could actually lose the weight before the run. Not to mention it would be(or at least feel) slightly easier?
Of course today (after only 3 miles mostly walking) my legs are sore!! And I have to get back out there today as incorporating training into my work schedule is a new thing for me. Previous runs were made when I had my own business so training was more flexible.
Very foggy here in the PNW this morning…hoping for a sun break in a bit to make the walk/run more pleasant!
@Bert1802-glad the bathroom is finished and glad you didn’t get hit by the globe light.
@diana123 I really like your quote. I still haven’t found one that is ringing for me this month so until I do…
Have a great day everyone! Wherever you are. โค๏ธ๏ธ
