  • Thanks FB. I have to make the eggs now – so pretty – I can just imagine how beautiful they will look with vegetables. And if no “eggy” smell, all the better πŸ™‚
Yum Yum: I don’t use ready made pastes as I am not fond of the additives in them (the gummy mouthfeel as they add some kind of a thickener, and prserved flavour). For Thai curries, I tend to buy those tube Pastes from woolies or Coles ( Thai Basil and Chilli and /or Sweet Chilli)and add that to coconut milk or soy sauce depending on dish. Seems lighter somehow. Also then you can make an infinite vareity of stuff, including stirfry, laksa etc. But that’s just me πŸ™‚

It’s almost 5pm and I’m willing hubby to get home from work as I really need to eat dinner. The hunger hit me about 1/2 hour ago and now I’m really really hungry.

This morning I had a small bowl of porridge made with coconut water and a small sprinkling of LSA and cranberries and tonight for dinner we’re having bbq salmon topped with a little chopped capers and parsley with steamed broccolini, asparagus, zucchini and kale on the side.

I was busy today and had a couple of herbal teas throughout the day so didn’t notice the hunger until I sat down and bam…major hunger pains.

Lotus thanks for the tips will check out the tube pastes. The Ferns’ is actually imported from India and manufactured by Mrs. N. Fernandes and says it has no thickeners or preservatives. I was put on to it by a friend who is Indian when she taught me the rudiments of her kind of curry, its yummy. Have used it for about 20years now.
Forgot about laksa, will have to calculate the cals and make it with chicken drumsticks. It is my own recipe that I made up as I went along. Do a lot of cooking like that which makes it hard to work out sometimes. Have used laksa paste in the past but what would you recommend in the tube pastes for laksa?
    Ta. YY

Allure: I am so not trying to think of dinner yet lol
YumYum: I must try Ferns then :), definitely easier than making your own paste! For Laksa, I use the Thai Basil and Chilli ( or is it called Thai Herbs?) not sure, but its the yellowish coloured one. It has basil, turneric, galangal etc and so makes a good base. I then add a tsp of chilli paste and 1/2 tsp of keens curry powder. A little bit of sugar and lemon juice added at the end to balance flavours. Apprently, for thai food, they are particualr about balancing the sweet, salty and sour tastes in food. For the milk portion of it, I use Carnation milk flavoured with coconut as its lower cals. I am ot fond of the fish sauce that is added to commercial pastes, I think the flavour changes when they bottle it with other ingredients, so I use this mix and match method. But my Thai friends do add fish sauce at the table and during food prep.

100grams is 176 cals low fat mince, Lotus I think it was you who asked, thats the reading off MyFitnessPal…hope it helps…CG

Lotus I use the Carnation milk with coconut flavour too and don’t add fish sauce either. As I said I make it up as I go along and to my taste so I dry fry off the laksa paste then put in some chicken drum sticks to coat with paste before adding about a stick of celery, fresh chopped tomatoes (lots) chicken stock and when cooked take the chicken out and pull off meat to add back. I also add now a cake or so of Chang’s dry noodles and the coconut milk and if I have any, some prawns. Oh I do put in some lemongrass also to balance out flavours. Will try your tube idea tho. Sounds good. πŸ™‚

Sorry Lotus, it was Yumyum who asked. You are such a clever lot with this Indian, Thai cooking, as I said originally most Aussies traditionally just added curry powder to a chicken casserole and called it Curried Chicken, me being one of them.
Poor Dogsabie, I do hope the scales work, if we all hear a very loud crash of glass, we will know they have gone through the window!
Allure, I’m having milky espresso (cappuccino) now, it carries me over till, 6.30-7.00 when I eat. I calculate it into my daily cals on FD’s and tonight is a prawn salad with cantaloupe, oh so yummmmm. So nothing to eat today, well, approx fresh peaches, one nectarine, just couldn’t resist and yes just off the trees, had to check they were ready…right πŸ™‚ 3-4 glasses Kirks no sugar Lemon Squash, really refreshing and now my coffee….oh, and another handful of cherry tomatoes as I was picking them; NOTE TO SELF, no fruit or veg picking on fast days!
Allure it will come for you, you have a lot to be proud of, getting this far, first fast day, not easy I know, but have a cuppa, YOU CAN DO IT, let your AUSSIE DETERMINATION take over xxx πŸ˜† CG

Yumyum, I just did an open web search and got 136 cals in 100grams 95% fat free mince…take your pick, might be better on a non fast day, most of us as you know stick with chicken or fish on Fast Days…good luck, there is always tomorrow…that’s the beauty of our 5:2 ….CG xx

Hi, well done to Willow and others. I know that I plateaued for a while too but then all started again and am averaging 500 grams per week which is the expected loss.
Countrygal, was it you who started the whole curry thread? Korma is Indian and red curry is That so that is a basic difference. Red is medium but green thai curry is usually hot. My family really likes Rogan Josh with either lamb or chicken.
All this food talk is making me hungry!
I ended up fasting yesterday so am not today but will do 4/3 this week,Sunday, Tuesday and one other. Hosting book club on Thursday so not then! I was going to fast today but I think it must be important not to do back to back to avoid lowering the metabolism. I haven’t eaten much today and we are having salmon for dinner. Oh, well, I will just have to have a glass of wine, for medicinal purposes obviously! It is interesting and a happy outcome, that once we start fasting, many of us eat less on non fast days. How good is this W o L!
Looking forward to the weigh in on Friday am. Happy fasting all.

CG thankyou for checking, I don’t plan to have it on NF days, if you remember, it was me trying to work out my TDEE count for the day on MFP that had me spitting the dummy recently. Partly it was because of a big swing in cal amounts that I had available to me. That’s why I asked you to check for me. That day I cut my losses and had my spag bol sauce over cabbage with just a small sprinkle of cheese. Apart from the mushroom strog I have fish, eggs or chicken too on FD

Enjoy your fresh produce YY xx

Hi uptight, yes it was, I bought two different pastes on spec, then got home and thought “why the h…l did I buy these” anyway ready to experiment but wasn’t sure how. My daughter goes out for Thai and loves Indian but not sure if she cooks it, I think she told me years ago the difference between red and green but, well, seniors moments and didn’t take it in. Thanks for the info, I’ve seen Rogan josh but no idea what it is, I have only ever used Clive of India for curries, soups or just to add flavour where your not really sure what it is but it adds depth. My Sunday was like yours, came in at 575 cals and today, just not hungry, but I find eating fruit filling and I’ve had my fair share of it today. Haven’t had a Jack and Zero today either, so will go without to see how I weigh in tomorrow. From memory they say in The Book, doing extra fast don’t make the loss any better than doing 5:2, but I think it has to help, surely! If lower cal intake helps weight loss, one would think it would help. Any way on a plateau of late so hopefully this will kick start a bit of movement. Off to make my prawn and Rock Melon salad, have a lovely evening team…CG xxx

Yumyum, that sounds lovely, I’ll try that cause I love cabbage (especially with heaps of butter and salt and pepper) can’t help myself, dairy country, love dairy products, stick with your MFP, it’s easy once you get the hang of it…CG xx

i have to stop reading all these yummy foods

Will read tomorrow. Yummy korma lotus will appear on my menu next week with cauliflower
    Rice. Something new.

I did it today under 450 First time usually end up just over the 500.

    Have a great night.

Fast day insomnia! I have been playing chess and trawling Internet to tire the brain, all that’s happened is chess scores went down…oh well. All for better as it helped me to learn the game better.
    Goodnight all!
Btw, I made chia seed gel today as an experiment ( like those expensive chia seed pots they sell in woollies etc) – added 100ml flavoured coconut water ( this time its mango) for 1 tbsp chia seeds. Will add this oats tomorrow as its a non-fast day – it’s also pretty nice as a pudding and increase fibre content on fast days – I had the commercial one as brunch on a FD and kept me full till dinner. Works out to about 150 cals or lesser.

I feel many of you are already in bed or getting ready to (I’ve just looked up and Perth is 7hrs ahead of Brussels and Sydney 70hrs) so this amight reach you all in the morning. So good morning, most of you! Welcome to a new day with this absolute megapost (I’m going to have to learn to edit myself eventually lmao).

So to come back to an old convo, CG, I think the majority of the chocolate shops in our cities are actually artisan so they make their chocolates in the back of their shops. I know my local bakery used to make their own chocolate dolls (shaped like St Nicholas) around December 6th because we went to visit them in 3rd grade. We usually buy big tablets of chocolate with whole hazelnuts at another local bakery. They just break off a piece for you and weigh it (like take-out pizza places in Rome). We tend to be less excited about chocolate that comes from factories. You know, Leonidas,Godiva and Neuhaus are fine and everything, but they’re no Delrey. That might be the best chocolate I’ve ever had. Downside is, that it costs about €20 for 250g, where Leonidas for instance costs €6,50 for the same amount. If you want to go more trendy/high fashion, The Chocolate Line by Dominique Persoone is amazing. He has a few shops (in Antwerp, Bruges,…). He does tequila shots, lipstick, even a chocolate shooter, which is like chocolate snuff. http://www.chocolateshooter.be/index.asp?taal=uk

So, if anyone is ever going to buy chocolate in Belgium, go to unknown little praline shops in the touristy areas, they’re better than Leonidas or Godiva.

Fittoretire, I think Irish is absolutely beautiful. I hung out with some people from Ireland on my year abroad, it’s a fantastic language. But I must say I’d find it quite daunting to learn because I don’t recognise anything in there. When I started learning Catalan for instance, I already understood quite a lot because of my Spanish but on sound, there are no (or very few) reference points to start from with Irish. Maybe one day though. It’s actually on my list of ‘if I ever start learning a new language again’, along with Bask, Galician, Swedish, Italian and Portuguese. But I need to get my Catalan in check before I ever try another one.

Dogsabie, Swedish is a fantastic language too. I must say I understand quite a lot of it. Also, in Europe we grow up watching each other’s telly (with subtitles) so I grew up watching Vi pΓ₯ SaltkrΓ₯kan. Ever heard of it? I used to love that show. I took Latin for 2 years but after I realised I didn’t really need Latin to help me learn languages I switched to econ. And let me know if I can ever help you out with that French, it really would be my pleasure. It often happens that one parent tries to keep kids from being different from other kids so they don’t get bullied. It was probably out of a sense of protection. I don’t think I could ever raise my children in another language than my own, it means too much to me. though raising kids multilingually would be something I’d definitely want to do. I’ve never been to Sweden but my cousin recently moved to Norway because he met a girl online and my aunt and uncle visited over Christmas and realised the word for blood poisoning is exactly the same in Dutch and Norse. Don’t even ask how they found out about that one πŸ™‚

I love how the Mush Strog keeps coming up in our conversations. We should consider renaming the thread Aussie Determination, now with extra Mushroom Stroganoff.

CG, your kids aren’t interested in stewed fruit??? O_o How could they? I wish you could wire me some right now, that sounds amazing. Boo, so jealous of you peaches. And cherry tomatoes are so low cal, I doubt they could ever hurt your FD kcal target. I think it’s 14kcal/100g? I believe there is a slight difference between weight loss on 5:2 and 4:3 but it’s so small most people don’t think it’s worth the extra FD.

Lotus, I’m going to try this chutney (if ever a season in which stone fruit exists reappears on these cold lands)

Anyway, soup day today, can’t wait (I love me some soup). Had 2 pieces of pie on Saturday and made a gooseberry jam/sugar pie yesterday so had 1/4 of that (I make preserves too, CG πŸ™‚ ) Plus I shared a can of coconut water with a friend but I’m not the biggest fan so spiked it with some white rum, it was yummy (bad Flemmy, bad). I’m surprised I only weighed 62.9 this morning. Another tip: Aloe Vera Juice is also better with rum. This week, I’m testing Rum Horchata πŸ™‚

Alright, going to boil some delicious water to keep my fluids up, I want to get rid of my pie-weight by Friday.

FB thank you for the egg recipe. Pics look fascinating so going to try them maybe tomorrow. Had a good FD today with very little hunger. Kept busy making tomato chutney that wouldn’t set, but I got there in the end. Must have cooked it 3 – 4 times longer than it said. Yummy though. It’s from a good, old CWA preserving recipe that I found online of all places! Someone had adpted it slightly. Do hope the tomato crop is over soon, though it is lovely to have these over the winter.
Well hoping for a good weigh-in tomorrow after FD. If not I’ll grit my teeth and stick in there with AD.
    suejen
Oh Foxy gotta go back & find that strog recipe from last week too. Doing that now. Have a good night all….unless……..you’re already in bed!

Good morning team, how did you go with your fast yesterday. If things are not moving, just hang in there, it stands to reason you are eating better you are eating less and what seems slow to you, is a lifetime of bad habits never to return. It had taken a lot of years to get to the stage of seeking help so the fat is going to take time to leave. It will, give it time, when you look back after a year on 5:2 you will be surprised how much your body has changed. With 5:2 in four months, I have noticed so much change in my body shape, weeks of loss, weeks of plateau, but overall look so much slimmer, going from size 18-20 down to size 14 jeans! Weight wise I fluctuate, but the ups are lower and the downs still even lower…now up to 80k and down to 78,0k so soon hope to zigzag from 79k down to 77k if that makes sence. Obviouly intake will show, scales are so sensitive but after fast days the lows should show too.
Flemmy, sweets, stewed fruit are not part of my daughters menu apart from special occassions, in past years we all had sweets of some kind but being so health consious it just doesn’t happen for them. My grandson adores stewed fruit on his cereal when he stays with me as well as with icecream after dinner and really she is doing the right thing. That’s 7extras a week they don’t have. She always has fresh fruit in the bowl for a snack and kids lunches but stewed fruit would sit in her pantry or freezer forgotten. Let’s face it, it’s an old fashon thing to do, but our generation grew up on it so just do it out of habit. Wish I could send you some over, I have so so many and they are delicious.
I found a recipe to freeze peaches with out sugar or syrup. Just cut a cross onto each pearch, drop into boiling water for 2 minutes, use slotted spoon to remove them drop into iced water, when cool enough to handle, start peeling them from the cross which will have started to open. Once skinned, halve, remove pip, then slice in wedges. Lay on a try then freeze, once frozen put in to containers or zip lock bags back in the freezer…How easy is that. Once thawed, pieces of fresh fruit, either finger food or with icecream or on cereals. Ready to add to recipes etc…just thought I’d share
My night started like yours Lotus, so much energy, sleep just wouldn’t happen, but did in the end, but frustrating when you have an early start the following day.
Water aerobics this morning so back later, let us know how you went team, keep an eye on your TDEE today and you will be fine eating your “normal” meals..enjoy… CG πŸ™‚ xx Have a happy day, give a smile away, see how many come back xxx

Dogsabie, my daughter and her familystayed at Fracinet and Champene Bay. They had close to a week at each, they are in to trecking, bush walking and adored it. They had a cabin I think…but it was there they fell in love with the huge chips.. Went to the bub one arvo after their huge walk, and got a bowl each for the kids, tried them adored them, so both ended up getting themselves a bowl each too. Just saw it on the morning show so remembered. They Said it was the most beautiful spot and hope to get back there. Hope your well…CG xxxx

Well that was interesting, Country gal and Flemmy. So I won’t bother doing a third fast this week if it isn’t going to really be worth it. Don’t know how I didn’t realise that.
I am a tad excited this morning as it has only taken me 2 days (one a fast) to get below the weight I was when I left for that 2 week holiday. Bizarre! But as it is also my lowest since starting 5/2, I am going to enter it quick smart on to that MFP ticker, no questions asked. As today is a fast day for me, this can only be good!!!!!! Looking forward to the scales tomorrow.
Very funny Flemmy about the mushroom stroganoff. I had better get around to trying it. Wouldn’t want to be left out.
Happy Tuesday all. I hope you all have as happy a result as me.

Good morning all. Countrygal, Freycinet and Champaigne Bay are about two hours drive to the south of us. We are very privileged as we do live in a beautiful part of the world. Sometimes I have to go away and then come back home to appreciate it.
Fleming, I haven’t seen that Swedish TV show you mention. I’ve seen Wallander occasionally but it’s in English. They do have a slight Swedish lilt to their accent. Quite a lot of South Africans grow up and learn another language when they are young. I was about six when my parents moved and most of the kids spoke Afrikaans. I don’t even remember learning it but obviously playing with them it wasn’t too hard.
Have any of you found on your FDs that you get really cold? Yesterday arvo I got so cold that I put on my polar fleece top and then turned on the heating. In February! It’s bizarre. I think Michael says in his book that his dad also felt the cold more.
I’m not exercising today as I have tendinitis of the kneecap ( self diagnosed). It makes walking painful so will rest hPa for a day or two and hope it goes away. Otherwise all is good. I must stick to my TDEE today so have the new kitchen scales on the kitchen benchtop for that.
    Take care. DS

A very good morning AUSSIE DETERMINATORS!& ESP to our new members! Well done to you all on your weight lose……say goodbye to those kgs for good.
    UP- WELCOME BACK!!!
Just loving all these new recipes…..thank you. We may have to write a book with all these recipes soon. It is showing we all love cooking and making our meals more interesting.
The Mushie Strog is a real winner….. Do try it…..sooooo delish and filling.
Having Salmon patties for dinner tonight ,made with QUINOA. A new recipe for me … will post if it is OK for the “MAN OF THE HOUSE”.
    …………GO GAL

Flemmy- Had to check my photos of BRUSSELL… There was a Chocolate shop in “SABLON”
They made the most delicious hot chocolate… It was a cup full of chocolate with a jug of hot milk on the side…… Did never finish a whole cup…. so rich! and those huge slabs of chocolate! brought pieces to get me through my adventures in Europe……..GO GALxxx

Hi all you great and inspiring Aussie gals – am so jealous when I see you write about all that luscious fresh fruit straight from the trees. I really love my fruit! Also, it’s fab to read about all the recipes you try out and share. I’m not much use in the kitchen – my hubby does all the cooking and he’s not interested in 5:2, but understands my doing it.
Flemmy, your knowledge of so many languages is incredible and your list of those you aspire to learn is awe-inspiring. I agree with you about the artisan chocolate makers – I’ve a very sweet tooth and have paid the occasional visit to a chocolatier near our place in France – yummy but quite expensive. Go Gal, I’ve also indulged in hot chocolate in different parts of Europe – nothing like it!
Hope all goes well with everyone’s fasting and weigh-ins this week. Goodnight/morning all!

Good morning determinators (and evening /night Flemmy and Dogsabie!). I lost another 200 gms this morning – definitely not just water( hey, every drop counts lol). Got motivated enough to go for a spin class before work. And came back and pigged out on a lovely breakfast. Its funny how after a fast day the palate is so clean! I thanked and praised the cook at the cafe so profusely, he was a tad embarrased πŸ™‚ But it all just tasted so good. If ever I become a wine taster ( dream proffession or what?) fasting before a tasting session would be the goer!
Stay strong, we are all together and going to win eventually, every one of us.
    xx

Good morning all ADs! What a lot I’ve had to catch up on, I’ll never remember it all!

Nice to have some fellow preservers on here…..it’s a great hobby of mine, just can’t stand wasting any of our produce….this season I’ve made: zucchini relish (2 batches), piccalli, apricot jam, apricot cheese, apricot chutney, bottled apricots….yes a bumper crop! plum cheese, stewed plums, beetroot relish & pickled beetroot, tomato sauce (ketchup)….and for all you people wanting to know what to do with excess fruit……make wine! I have 5 litres of apricot wine clearing waiting to be bottled…..soon to be followed by blackberry wine….been patiently picking wild blackberries and freezing….fruit wines are lovely, bit higher in alcohol too πŸ™‚

    suejen…..that mushroom stroganoff is on about page 40 – 43 I think…

Had a great fast day yesterday, almost back to Fridays weight….I know what you mean CG….I used to fluctuate between 75 – 76…..now its 73 – 74….still frustrates me sometimes but the number IS lower

When I’ve had a bad eating few days, I’m tempted to do 4:3….but I’ve never really lost any more weight, I think my body is used to 5:2 now….enjoy your day everyone, whatever you are doing….and welcome to all our new members…..you are in the right place here at AUSSIE DETERMINATION..

Oh…..can’t wait to see you in your blingy thong/s Flemmmy! πŸ™‚

    Thanks, GoGal!

Hi everyone…..I’ve just created an AUSSIE DETERMINATION – RECIPES THREAD in the Recipe Section of the general forums. I thought it would be an easy place to post our recipes for future reference.

suejen…..I found the mushy stroganoff recipe and posted on that thread πŸ™‚

Thanks Foxycoxy that will make life easier. Boy I was complaining about all the tomato preserving yesterday…….I better stop complaining after reading your list! Boy you’re a wonder woman. We have a lot of similarities – location, cooking/preserving, live on a 1/2 acre (think that was you), starting weight – mine was 82.5 today down to 76.9. Yeah been waiting for the 76’s. But yes I wander up and down a bit like you said.
Lotus yes I agree re the clean palate – everything tastes lovely. Another plus.
Ooh Fittoretire hot chocolate in Europe so many memories of that one. Best ever was on the coast in France in a little port town in a teensy, tiny little cafe that made hot chocolate from heaven, heated on a little stove. MMmmm Yes Gogal it was just like the one you had.
Uptight aren’t those new lower numbers just great! 5:2 you’re awesome and so is this group.
CG and anyone else into preserving/freezing etc I follow a lady on a site called http://www.anoregoncottage.com and she has some great recipes. I don’t blanch my beans any more & it’s so much quicker per her instructions. Might put some up on the new recipe site.
Have a great day ADers. Hubby just invited me out for a coffee so seeing it’s not a FD I’m outta here! suejen

Thanks FB, good to know. Love the encouragement from you all

Can I please ask those who have been doing this for some time a yucky question? Has the 5:2 messed with anyone’s bowel movements – such as reduced them? If so – any solutions?

LOL thanks suejen……I’ll definately tell hubby that I’m a wonder woman…..if I looked like Linda Carter? I think he’d be even happier πŸ™‚ Don’t worry, I complain about the preserving too…..especially when I plant too many yellow squashes and zucchinis as I invariably do….been using a lot more of our excess veg since we started 5:2 though, make lots of ratatoui….spelling? yum

We do have a lot of similarities….where are you again in WA? Margaret River? Yep my start weight was 83.6…..down to 73 on Friday…..my ultimate goal is 60 as I’m a shorty….but to see a 6 at the start of my scales will send me into raptures! Enjoy your coffee πŸ™‚

Morning, Flemmo it is 9:52 am for me in Perth so guess you have packed it in for the night. I live on a suburban block with minimal garden skills to grow my own so I too am drooling at the thought of being able to put up fruit for the ‘off’ season. I have to confess that chocolate is not an overriding passion for me – savoury, salty things are but, having said that we have a franchise called San Churro who import chocolate products from Spain and I get a craving now and again for this. They make fresh long donut type sticks to dip in melted chocolate. Yummo!!! We also buy bags of their hot chocolate mix for winter drinks. I’m sure this franchise is not restricted to the West coast but haven’t seen other AD’s mention it yet.

Seems my losses will happen in 300gr lots as yesterday’s FD achieved this again.

Good idea Foxy to have an AD recipe page! Something to go to when drawing a blank inspiration wise.

UP I tried a three day week once, didn’t do anything beyond what I’ve experienced on a two day week. Just learnt that if you’re not hungry for a lunch or breakfast, don’t eat. That seems the better plan.

Cohayney I have always had a lazy bowel so I make sure fruit, celery, cabbage and also psyllium husks mixed into a small amount of yoghurt works. YY

Cohayney, welcome, yes constipation is quite common, especially in the beginning. So many solutions on our thread but drinking plenty of water…maybe fruit as it is the season and full of roughage, or get something light and gentle from your chemist. Foxy, great idea re our recipes, I’m sure that thread will be a hit for us all as well as a ready reckoner. I just posted my Rockmelon and prawn salad on it, just so yummy, easy and refreshing. Hope you enjoy it.
Just not long home from Water Aerobics which I loved, and reading all your posts feel I’ve lead a very sheltered life. I’ve had one holiday in over 20 years, to Bali with my wonderful Son when his long service came due as well as a magnificent cruise to the Pacific Islands with a colleague when I retired three years ago, and felt quite the world traveller seeing other cultures and meeting such diverse gentle people. I guess raising children came first, rotten marriage got in the way etc etc etc but life is mine to enjoy now so who knows where it will take me.
Suejen, thanks for the thread, I’ll check it out, this time of year gets a bit busy, you plant, get excited you weed, you pour the water on, then harvest, then the endless cooking…work work work…BUT come Winter, oh so glad you did!
Uptight, if you check out the difference in the search bar, it does say it was proved that 4:3ers didn’t seem to have a better weight loss than the 5:2ers…strange but true.
The original is usually the best with most things.
Have a happy day team πŸ™‚ WHERE ARE YOU GYPSY?????
Keep up to your TDEE and enjoy, glass of wine, whatever, you are allowed to, and smile it costs you nothing and recipients really appreciate it…. πŸ˜† CG xx

FLEMMY- I have found the bling thongs! Need your foot size and how to send to you xxx
    ……..GO GAL

Yum Yum, that sounds like good advice.
Countrygal, I have travelled quite a lot, have lived in the country and the city. While I enjoy travelling it often only serves to remind me that we are so lucky to live in Australia. While there are places I would like to see, if I couldn’t travel overseas again it wouldn’t worry me one bit.
I am actually going overseas for 4 months in 5 weeks and while I know I am lucky, I am not actually excited as there is a lot to organise and I will miss a lot here.
I live in the city now and enjoy it but I really, really miss country living. So I am envious of you. I used to grow vegetables and had an apple and nut orchard as well as apricots that were so much better than the shop bought ones. And an enormous garden and space and peace and quiet and privacy!
Now I have to take my dog for a walk on a lead!
So, some of us are never satisfied! Of course, if I ever get to be my goal weight I will try never to complain about anything ever again!! πŸ™‚

Thanks Foxy for the site…… such a treasure!……GO GAL xxxxx

Hi Cohayney, I find drinking a couple of glasses of cool water first thing on getting up works well on consitpation issues. It also feels really refreshing. And I found that as with other side effects (headaches, hunger pangs etc.) this got sorted after the first month or so on fasting, so the body must need adjusting to the new amounts of food and mealtimes, before the clockwork ticks along?

Thankyou Uptight, I can’t say I’m enveous of travellers, my feet are firmly planted and very much a home body, but there are so many beautiful, places in the world and thanks to travel shows on telly, I’d love to walk amongst it all. To get to feel of the cultures the smells, the foods etc. but I’ve never had itchy feet and poured everything into my home. I am very content, but parts of me just wish……….but I believe in fate, if it’s meant to be it will. I’d love to see Scotland and Wales where my family history is from, but then again, I’m a third generation Aussie and proud of it. Have a lovely evening…CG xx

Hi team. Cohayney123 I too suffer from the dreaded constipation. Gypsy suggested taking probiotics ie Yakult. I do that plus Inner health plus from chemist. First thing in the morning two large glasses of water followed by Green tea & lemon. I find it horrible but still take it. Unfortunately to date it has not helped and I have to resort to laxatives. This has become an issue as I do want to stick to the 5:2 but don’t want to have to take laxatives Ad infinitum.
Countrygal and others. I find sticking to my TDEE difficult. Do you have any meals you can suggest for NFD. I realise our stats differ but would really appreciate some tips. I have not worded out how to access the recipes many of you have posted. I will have closer look at the website tomorrow and hopefully find them. Cheers now and look forward to more AD tomorrow.

Hi Dogsabie, I usually eat the way I always have but my portions are a lot smaller. I use a smaller plate, not quite a bread and butter plate but certainly smaller than a large dinner plate. I never, or rarely have breakfast.,through choice, I find a coffee or two holds me over to 1-2.00 in the arvo depending on how busy I am around here. I may have a cuppa mid morning or something. My big difference in not having bread, that keeps the cals down. Instead of a roll or sandwich, which I used to have with a cuppa, I now put the “innards” just on a plate on a bed of lettuce, does that make sense? Say, egg and lettuce sandwich, just wrap the mashed egg with a tad of mayo and sprinkle of curry powder and wrap it in lettuce, or ham and tomato or whatever you would normally have. Or I have soup which I have plenty if in the freezer. I have the normal type of dinner but have cut down on potatoes, maybe 1-2 baby chat potatoes but only once or twice a week. A smaller portion of meat and a few mixed veg. I hope that helps…yet tonight, I hit the chocolates for some reason, Belgium actually and beautiful, but over did it…just greed…but done now! Let me know..If that helps. I’m not into many casseroles etc because it’s just me! I end up with so much in the freezer then forget whats there! I have three freezers and bulk buy, or get a side of lamb etc, but being so far from shops I store a lot..also pets food etc. CG πŸ™‚

hello folks. i’m new here, and am enjoying having a read through your posts. you all seem very generous and it’s great to see how you’re helping each other out!

i started over a week ago, have been going well so far but think i’ll start documenting food on FD, which i haven’t been so far, as the evidence seems to support this quite strongly. at least to get the ball rolling…

i’ve found the fasts super easy so far. i’m not a fan of breakfast, which now i don’t feel so bad about. the only issue i have been experiencing is sleep issues, which given my workload is not at all sustainable. anyone else experienced the same & any fabulous tips?? last night i slept great – NFD and ate pasta for dinner, which i don’t do at all usually. i think it was more a carb coma…? might also have been the magnesium supplement. not quite sure?!

anyhow – love some advice if you have any x

Hi all – can’t say I have any real advice concerning constipation, but I think it can probably be helped by your overall diet, both fast and non-fast days. Personally, I have porridge for breakfast every morning and try to eat as much fruit and veg as possible within my calorie allowance. I also drink lots and lots of water. Seems to work for me. Hope this helps.
Bettina, welcome to the forum. If you read back through this and other threads, you will get lots of invaluable advice and tips on every topic under the sun. Best of luck on your 5:2 journey!
Great tip, Country Gal, to use smaller plate and trick the mind. I live in the heart of the Irish countryside and love where I live. I also love to travel and experience the things you spoke of above, but as Dorothy says ‘there’s no place like home’.

Good,Morning Team, fittoretire of all the doco’s I’ve seen on Ireland it does look very pretty, not unlike where I am. I have seen shows on the Yorkshire mores too which is the same type of terrane. I guess I’ve never caught the travel bug, although the ’60’s was interesting during The Beatles era who opened the world to a lot of us teenagers, but as Australia is just so far from the rest of the world, money has always been short so it was something I didn’t even consider, but I’m very content and happy. Your right about tricking the brain, as soon as I changed to a small plate I found myself eating so much less and rarely go over my TDEE. I wont say never because LIFE happens. But on the other hand, found some big size bowls at the op shop which I use for soups and often salads as with a caesar, it’s basically all lettuce but tricks you into thinking, wow, that’s huge, I’ll never eat all that….but so what if you do?
How did you all go yesterday after your fast on Monday. Were you hungry? I usually find I’m not until I start eating, so do so as late as possible. I’m off to a B.B.Q. For lunch which will be a couple of snags and onions and a bread roll, so yum, very UN5:2, but doable with cal counting and keeping within my TDEE, strange how the good old snag is now a treat and I love ’em but awfully high in cals. So will finish my day with a tuna salad with heaps of lettuce, celery and cucumber AND my cherry tomatoes, all satisfying and low cals. Bit sore today from yesterday’s aerobics, I guess that means I had a good work out, or it could be just normal morning stiffness that comes with age, not that I think old but my body often reminds me I’m not 21 any more.
Have a lovely day team, as The Buddha says, “Anger is like holding a piece of hot coal to throw at your enemy, you are the one who gets burnt.” Don’t sweat the small stuff team get out there and live… πŸ™‚ CG xx

Bettina welcome, I have been doing 5:2 since early Sept and still have sleepless nights. I try being busy on fast days to tire myself, I sit up latish trying to get tired, all goes well until I get into ged and the restlessness starts. I’m so wide awake I could scream! Sometimes when I need to be up early I take 1/2 a sleeping tab I got years ago for personal issue (found a murder suicide with one of my clients) and it helps, probably very weak by now with age but yes it’s a bugger!.. Maybe ask you pharmacist or Dr…CG xx

Morning CG! I love that saying- The Buddha says, β€œAnger is like holding a piece of hot coal to throw at your enemy, you are the one who gets burnt.”

    Welcome Bettina!
For sleeplessness, what about adding a late night drink of hot milk and 1 tsp of honey? You can build it in your calorie count on FDs. I used it the first couple fasts with a hot compress (my whole body used to cahe, for some odd reason). Don’t use it anymore, as my body has adapted to less food and so doesn’t protest so much πŸ™‚

CG, sometimes I find being too tired worse for restlessness, mate. (Twitchy muscles and nerves?). Too achy joints after lots of exercise make the problem worse!

Hi Bettina and welcome. Good morning everyone

I take one Swiss magnesium tablet every night, I was told helps with headaches that I used to get havent had one in months. It helps with muscle tension so helps my tired muscles from circuit training and best of all helps me sleep.

I had a sneaky weigh in Tuesday morning down 400 grams so happy.

I had a funny night last night wanted to binge wasn’t sure what I wanted had a few lollies then a couple of dry biscuits oh then stopped. I obviously wasn’t hungry. Haven’t had this for quiet a whole. Hormones I think. Had a big drink of water and watched some TV. Wasn’t fast day wasn’t many calories. Another lesson learned.

Made cauliflower rice last night with chicken parmie balls I loved it family not, so back to rice for them not me though.

    Have a great day

My problem, is that I simply can’t hold out until lunch on Fast days! So I can’t do more than 14 hour fasts, before I keel over get brekky/brunch by 10:30 am (last night’s dinner was at 6 pm). They say we need to do 16 hour fasts for better insulin resistance, but can’t seem to last that long, at least at the moment. One reson could be that I am doing fasting exercise (5 km walk) that finishes by 8 am…
Calories including brunch and early dinner is around 450 cals on a FD.

Oh yeah Bali, I forgot that one – Magnesium tablets are also good!

Lotus what your doing is fine, it’s the overall intake I would think and your having your longest fast when asleep especially if you have an early dinner then brekky at 10.00-10.30, that’s still a lot of hours, just go with what suits you. Oh yeah, magnesium, I ran out a couple of weeks ago, reordered yesterday online so maybe that’s my problem because the insomnia has returned, I had odd nights in the past but they seem to be getting worse on fast nights, so maybe that’s the answer thanks girls….
..Lotus, over many years of reading, and books which interest me, usually off the main stream, certain sayings like this stick and with me and it’s the philosophy that I love from our wise fore fathers and I try to live by Desiderata, I just love it, it is all so true and helps keep me sane (ish!) πŸ™‚ …CG xx

yes, keeps me sane too πŸ™‚
