• Good afternoon ADs. As I type the house is full of the smell of the Minestrone I am having for dinner tonight (214 cals) as it bubbles away on the stove.

Vegiemumma, I wanted to add to the list of AHAs you have there:

Realising how light I feel!
Realising how much more energy I have!

I’m sure others too can add to the list …

Sending positivity out to everyone.

Realising the personal pride
Realising the confidence returning
Realising the ease of movement returning

Just my two bob’s worth

Positive vibes back at cha! XxxCG xx

GG1, is the recipe Mimi’s or one you do yourself….. I love health in a bowl like that! CG xx

HI CG, It’s adapted from another recipe. Here’re the details. 6 serves 214 cals/serve.

3 bacon rashers, rind removed, roughly chopped (117g)
2 carrots, peeled, chopped (145g)
2 celery sticks, chopped (250g)
1 white potato, peeled, chopped (120g)
3 garlic cloves, crushed (6g)
1.5L (6 cups) beef stock (10g beef stock powder and water)
1 410g can red kidney beans, rinsed, drained (263g once drained)
2 410g cans chopped tomatoes (136g/serve)
60g dry spiral pasta
Salt & freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley

Place the bacon, carrots, celery, potato and garlic in a large saucepan and stir to combine. Cook over high heat, uncovered, stirring often, for 5 minutes.

Add the beef stock, red kidney beans and tomatoes to the pan, cover and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer, covered, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.

Increase heat to high. Add pasta and cook, uncovered, stirring occasionally, for further 10 minutes or until pasta is cooked. Season with salt and pepper. Ladle into serving bowls and sprinkle with parsley.

Enjoy

GG1 you wonderful girl, thank you for going to so much trouble for me. That is now definitely on my agenda and will be a winter favourite. I can taste it just by reading the recipe, yuuuum! Thank you again…CG xx

Hey, that’s what we’re here for, help each other out. You’ve been an immense help along this WOL. All the best.

Gypsie I’m sorry I didn’t reply, when I checked our thread it opened on the new page and I just got the email. Everything you say is so true, we go back over 45yrs as friends/neighbours/ and trainee nurses. A lot of water under the bridge with us and we read each other. A day apart with birthdays, both capricorns, so attached by the stars too. I have seen both boys grow, the youngest, I use to take to the childrens hosp regularly for his Cystic fibrosis as she couldn’t drive in the city…..been a long involved friendship even though we are now states apart, that “bond” is always there. She is fortunate to have a very loving husband feeling the grief too but men have a knack of being the family backbone when needed.
I’m so glad your embracing our 5:2 with grunt, it gets so much easier each week and all possible doubts do disappear, in fact you find you keep personally challenging yourself, be it food choices, going without totally (snacks etc) . or really feeling the guilt/pleasure in something simple like pizza. In a “past” life you would have eaten it without regard!
I’m so glad everyone is doing so well and feeling so positive, remember scales are only (bl…y) numbers the overall effect is wonderful, that’s what matters 😆 ….CG xx

Me again, don’t want to be a pest, just downloaded a few FREE books on Kindle, love a good murder mystery (must be my inner self?) anyway there are two Paloe recipe books for free too, I must admit I don’t know much at all about it, only hearing it mentioned on posts but they look okay. Cals are not measured but you can do that with my fitness pal. Just reading ingredients seem fine for our wol….just sharing…CG

Hi Aussie Determination
I’ve just joined the site today so I’m a newby. I am on my 4th fast day and have already lost 2kgs which I find exciting. Whilst I only have 6kgs to loose to get to my goal weight, before this diet I couldn’t budge it. On my first fast day I did end up with a headache but I think I overdid the shopping in the heat trying to keep busy to take my mind off food. It’s easier now but I am on holidays. My next challenge will be when I go back to work next week.
I like the way you all support each other .

PerthHelen, how lucky you are to be so close to goal, we all envy you. You have done the right thing nipping it in the bud before it blows out to being way over like most of us. Well done with the (fluid) loss, keep up the good work and welcome CG xx

Hi PerthHelen, welcome! I have about 6 kg to go, too! Have been a whole lot more…. but this 5:2 way is so easy. We all have ups and downs hopefully more downs! The ups can be a bit of a drag… but you get to know ,if you stick with it, the ups come right back!( ups meaning weight loss, lol ! )
Oh Gypsy, I had a look at tone of those you tube videos about weight gain over the century. So interesting! (can’t think of his name )
Have to rush off, sorry, hubby and Chinese call….
xx Linda.

Hi team, just heard from our GoGal, the reason she hasn’t posted of late is because her computer is down, hoping tomorrow she might be back online. She sends her best to everyone.
Linda I didn’t realise how close you were to your goal, well done you, well deserved, wont be long now…CG xx

Hi everyone, thanks for all the tips. That recipe looks yum I am going to try it. I am doing another fast today 2nd for the week and agin on Friday. My wieght just wo t seem to bugde much. SW around 83 and it goes down to 81 then back to 83 during the week. Yesterday it went to 80.9 yeh. Anyway I thought I would try and help it along a bit by doind an extra fast.

Same breaky yogurt berries and seeds and dinner thai coconut fish ( birdseye steam fresh). and steamed veg ( steam fresh) I have never eaten so much white fish but I love it. So quick and easy and I am getti g my protein.

I had a quarter of a fresh peach at about 1pm 15 cal

2 cups of coffee and lots of water.

only a few hunger pangs.

My son and his gfriend say it looks like I have lost weight in my face and neck and arms would u believe.

I kept myself busy reading today and enjoyed it.

Good lluck tomorrow everyone on their fast day and thanks again for all the encouragement.

Swany, you’ll get there, hang in, often scales don’t show loss but things are happening we are not aware of, try your tape measure, you may be surprise…keep up the AUSSIE DETERMINATION it helps us all….CG 🙂 xxx

Hi everyone,
Just getting to the end of a fast day. I was going to have another one on Friday but it is my husbands birthday so will have to have a half fast and go out and enjoy diner… 🙂
It is TTOM so I am feeling so bloated and really not thinking about food at all. I just keep drinking water and think how much better I am going to feel in the morning.
Swany, as they say, just hang in there. I am also on a non-budging weight at the moment and hopping it will move next week. But I love the way I feel after fasting so I am continuing for the health benefits and hoping that the by-product of weight loss will just automatically follow.
I have fallen in love with MFP for fasting days but hate it on non-fasting days but I have a question. At the end of the day, even if the amount of calories was good, say 1200-1400, it still tells me that in 5 weeks I am going to weigh 145 or 146kg. What’s up with that??? There is no way I am going to put on 50kg in that amount of time. Am I doing something wrong???
Have a great evening everyone.

Hi Gang, big storms up our way (FNQ) power keeps going off. I have a generator, but don’t trust it for the computer. Am likely going to be off line for a day or so. Will be thinking of you and your mate, CG. Good thoughts travel, I believe.

Lindanaf, glad you got something out of it. (It’s Dr Jason Fung – aetiology of obesity lectures on you tube) got the link from CG. It all helps to put this puzzle of how to be healthy in a take away world in perspective. Soooo many opinions on what best to do. I have picked the eyes out of ones I relate to on a common sense level. 5:2 is a perfect base plan. Good luck to all. My lights are flickering, bigggg clap of thunder…. I’m off! xx

Cath, re check your goal and tracker on myfitnesspal, you can alter you currant weight on it, maybe that is wrong, no way would it tell you what your saying, go into setting and check it out…CG

Cath, I just checked mine, click on more at the bottom of the page, look for goal…then alter your currant weight and you goal weight you can also alter your daily cal, intake…let me know how you go…CG xx

Take care Gypsy, they can be frightening…just sit back and try to enjoy the show…CG xx

Thank you for your reply CG. I’m counting kilojoules and 2092 equates to 500 calories. I find KJ easier as many foods don’t have the calorie count on them. I’m not familiar with what TDEE is. I did look it up once and then just got confused. I get what you mean by going to full is over doing it and I agree. I am trying to be aware of when I feel hungry. I did track my daily intake for one week to see what I actually eat and the result was between 6500 kj (1500 cal) to 7500 kj( 1792 cal) per day with only one day 8100 kj (1935 cal). When I check what a sedentary female should have it seems 7600 kj (1800 cal) per day is the norm (I don’t exercise as such and have a desk job, I do plan to change this). This is why I feel rather disheartened cause I don’t think I’m going way overboard. And as you can see without any limits to my intake I rarely went over what is reasonable. Since starting 5:2 I regularly miss lunch each work day as I couldn’t be bothered and since fasting I don’t seem to get hungry enough but if the team is going out for lunch then I do join them and that might be once a fortnight if I do get hungry I have piece of fruit or one sliced tomatoe. On the weekends I usually eat a big brunch 2 eggs 2 toast and then nothing again until dinner.
Today I’ve only had 34% of my 500 and last fast day only 74% of my 500. I go 20 hours between meals as I find it easier to go without then just have a normal meal with a portion size to stick within my goal intake and then don’t eat again until breakfast the following day a further 8 hrs. Lots of herbal tea, soda water and mineral water between.
But the funny thing is I really haven’t lost much on the scale in over a month but I can now fit into a pair of pants I haven’t been able to wear for over a year and my regular work pants seem just a tiny bit looser.
I’ll take your advice and track what I’m eating for the next week just to make sure I’m not kidding myself and keep track of the odd biscuit, lolly beer and wine. This is my first week of a 4:3 to see if that bumps things along too but I’m not keen on this. Agree with you that I have to commit and stick with it. Thanks for your input.

Hi Cath, mfp is good at working out calories consumed but has a few limitations when it comes to 5:2. When you log a normal day of food, it warns that in a few weeks you will weigh more than a grand piano and when you log a fast day it goes bananas and tells you you are gonna DIE!!!!!

You need to set your TDEE in mfp to something realistic as mfp works on the basis that you need to eat less than your “normal” TDEE every day in a traditional “on a diet” scenario whereas the 5:2 has you eating at your TDEE 5 days a week and doing the fast thing 2 days.

The fd website has a TDEE calculator. I used that and put it into mfp which helped.

Fast day today went like a breeze, and yes MFP told me i was going to die too.
Todays discovery was cauliflower rice.. Thats a beauty!
I was wondering whether it could be cooked and frozen or would it go watery? Anyone tried it?
And CG I Like having the brekky eggs n bacon for dinner too, youve inspired me to have it friday.. Not a fast day.
Cheers all…

Good morning team, and HAPPY FAST DAY, oooh they come around quickly, do you feel your life rushing past you? This year will fly for us all with our fasting, look how far back Xmas was! Seems like last week but it wasn’t!
No beaky for me again, may have a bit of watermelon mid arvo, either chicken breast
Or steamed fish with the last of the coleslaw for dinner. Easy peezy, no stress.
Your AUSSIE DETERMINATION is at it’s best on fast days, you know YOU CAN DO IT, you know how proud you feel when you get into bed tonight and another fast is behind you. You know the trepidation you feel waiting for Friday’s weigh in. You also know that feeling if/when the numbers move down on those “rotten” scales.
Robbie I have. a Muffin (wholemeal) split, toasted and a tad of butter or philly spread under my eggs too, lower cal than bread, just as yummy with my Friday night breaky.
Have a great day team, don’t sweat the small stuff, live for the moments you can’t put into words, life is so beautiful, live it…. 😆 ..CG xx

Gypsie, just watching the national weather on telly, golly, you are really getting a bashing up there in FNQ,, hope your night was uneventful, and your safe and dry, big lightening shows for you but heaps-heaps of rain…all the best CG xx

Have a F A B day team………GO GALxxxxxxx

Welcome back my friend, glad you sorted it all out, have a great day..CG :). Xx

Gypsy…. Just checked out BOM . That is some mother you are having up there. Stay safe .. Hope all is well……GO GAL xx

Morning everybody. Now I am confused with all these acronyms … what the %*@$&$ is mpf, WOL and BOM?

Also today is my second FD (I figured that one out by myself – woo hoo) and I have a question – has anybody else had issues with their ….. poop! watery, unformed – I know this is an unpleasant topic but figured one of you lovely ladies would know.

Am going to see how far into the day I can go without eating. It is now 8.30am and so far so good although some hunger pangs are starting … another cup of black tea is required.

Also as tomorrow is my first weigh day, do I also measure each week or only do that monthly for example?

I like all the confidence you all ooze – makes me feel like I am not alone. thanks everybody

Happy thursday fast everyone

We have this, I don’t really struggle in fast days anymore. It helps knowing Friday I can have food again.

I had a gym buddy ask me how much weigh I had lost since start of January she said she can really see the difference over the past few weeks. I am a lot smaller in the waist and clothes are definately looser but no difference on scales. I hoping it turns up soon. I did have this about week 7 and 8. Showed up week 9

Have a great day everyone. Weigh in day tommorro.

Bali

Oops – sorry – and blokes … didnt mean to leave out our males Aussies in my previous post.

Poor Ruxton; BOM is bureau of meteorology, WOL is way of life…The loose bowels is just what your eating, if your not used to so many salads, water, all in one end, out the other. If it keeps up ask your chemist for something but more importantly, keep up with your water, don’t get dehydrated if it’s happening too often. You are on a new way of eating, your weight loss will be water for some time, I wouldn’t worry yet. Oh and mfp is MYFITNESSPAL….hope that helps…CG 🙂 xxxx

Thanks CG was about to explain the acronyums….. OH…. by the way BOM is my hubby’s nickname for me…. it means….BEAUTIFUL, ORGANISED, MINDFUL…..LOL……

RUX…. Good advice from CG ….That is actually whats happening in your body . You will be one or the other… constipated or loose in the bowel dept until your body becomes used to 5:2… Measuring is up to you. Most of us have a problem with the tape measure…. it always ends up in the wrong place! You will be fine…….GO GAL

thanks for the information go gal and countrygal. I think I need a course in acronyms. My husband sent a deep and meaningful sms to his daughter with advice and support around a particular issue in her life and he ended it with LOL. He thought it meant lots of love. He had to call the daughter to explain that he wasnt laughing about her situation … and then I did LOL. I think this was the only acronym that I knew – until now.

HI all,

I hope you are all having a good week.

So it looks like the weightloss figure I gave you all on Monday was incorrect, I was officially weighed at Curves last Monday weighing 100.6 kilos I weighed on Monday morning on my own scales said I was 3.2 kg lighter, howvever I had my official weekly weigh in yesterday morning at Curves and the scales show I am now 95.8 which is loss of 4.8kg. I am absolutely loving this plan obviously I dont want to lose too fast so slow and steady and it will finally come off.

Have a lovely day.

Weighing in a day early because I had to change my fast days around this week. But just have to put this up.

Yay, a 6! Newbies, don’t give up . It is really very easy once you get into the swing of things!

Just saw this said I posted at 11pm. It is actually 9 am where I am!

Good morning ADs.

Snap Uptight.Isn’t it a great feeling!

Congrats mgreally123 – 4.8kg gone forever.

CG, where do I get your coleslaw recipe? Sounds like just what I need to keep the veges up.

I’m having an almost fast day again today (not 500 cals but low) so I can adjust my non-fast days to allow for going out for dinner Sunday or Tuesday (I normally do ADF ATM; will change to 4:3 when I get back from holidays).

Have a great day everyone.

Whoops, looks like I used the wrong code.

Good Morning ADs!!

@robbiej I want to try cauliflower rice and cauliflower mashed ‘potato’ and even cauliflower pizza base… but i have to invest in a food processor first. Not sure if you can freeze it though. You could always do a test try?

I’m the opposite with bowel movements on fast days – i know always put fibre supplement into my water for the day to makes sure i’m still getting my fibre. I guess i usually get a lot of fibre in my normal diet so fast days can cause a bit of blockage.

Good work on the weight loss!! that’s a fantastic result!

I don’t know my starting weight… or if i’ve lost… however, i’m feeling better and i had a colleague at work say to me this morning that i look like i’m smaller! so i’m all smiles today.

Good luck fasters!

Well done, GG1! I am off on holidays too on Saturday, 2 weeks at the beach!
I will have to change my ticker so that it, like yours, shows weights!

Morning,
Thank you to all your advice on MFP. I just had a look at my settings and instead of a DOB of 1969, it had 1997, so thought I was much younger…It has now change my daily calorie intake so shouldn’t tell me I will be the size of an elephant soon…
I had a good fast day yesterday. Ended up on 492 cals. Hope you ell have a great fast day today.
Ruxton, I was very confused with acronyms as well. Glad someone explained the BOM, but I figured it had something to do with the weather. I do like GoGal’s better though…:-).

Ok, I can get it to say 6kg lost or 4 to go( which I will change now that I know how easy this is!) but can’t get it to say my weight and how many lost. Don’t suppose you remember how you did that GG1 do you? If I try to go back to my twenties weight it should say about 10 to go!

I can’t remember Uptight, sorry. I think it was in the original set-up and I can’t see how to change it now. 10 to go! Fantastic! As you saw I still have over 20, and that’s to get to 80kg. When I get there I’ll re-assess. I’ve been a long way from 80kg for so many years that it may be a realistic stopping point for me, at least for a while. All the best.

The doctor has forbidden any weigh-ins except in her office once a month. I’m a real target-oriented person, so it’s frustrating. BUT she didn’t ban measuring myself. I’ve lost 4cm off my tummy in a week. Could be some serious water weight there, does water weight equal size?

I make a point of having breakfast, although on fast days the doctor wants me to try broth or miso soup for breakfast, which I haven’t tried. Tuesday I wasn’t hungry so I skipped lunch.

I’m only doing a small amount of exercise, but I’m doing it every day.

Do people have a coffee on their fast days? I have to have a morning coffee, otherwise I get a massive withdrawal headache in the early hours of the next morning.

Hi Ruxton
Good on you for not giving in to temptation. Once you hold back, you realise that you can actually do without that delicious morsel that you thought you had to have. The longer you put off giving in, it seems the easier it is to hold off that bit longer. There is a post somewhere in this forum that discusses holding off eating even on fast days for an extra ten minutes. It seems to educate the body that it will survive on limited food intake.
Your experience of not feeling hungry the next day mirrors my experience. Early on, I was often super hungry the next day, but now it’s not always like that. There is also a hot discussion about whether it is true that we ‘need’ to eat breakfast. Some say the notion was created by the breakfast cereal manufacturers to convince the public to buy their product. Not sure how true that is but I know that sometimes I have to wait a while to eat in the morning. I wait till that first hunger pang kicks in, then I go for it because I’ll usually be super hungry then whenever that may be.
Keep listening to your body. It is learning what it does and doesn’t need.

Hi Harmony23, I’ve been using the 5-2 for 7 weeks and there has been little change in either my weight or my measurements. But there has been a little change. Some of the change is hard to measure for example, I used to have a slight snoring problem that occasionally woke me up. I have seen a sleep specialist and he informed me that we put on weight inside our neck as well as the outside of our muscles. I’ve definitely noticed that this problem has gone away so I’m presuming that the fat I’ve lost might have come from inside my throat. Sounds a bit weird and it’s impossible to measure but I’m not waking up snoring anymore!
If the science is correct, which it seems to be, then even if the tape measure and the scales are not moving much, the long-term health benefits are worth it. At least that’s what I tell myself.
The other thing is you have to figure out what works best for you and that can take time and a bit of experimentation. Oh, BTW, I’m not an exerciser either. A couple of long walks a week and a bit of gardening and that’s it.

In Michael Mosley’s book he states that coffee is actually good for our body and that we shouldn’t cut it out. I don’t have the book in front of me right now but I know I read that and was very pleased because I’m more of a coffee drinker than a china tea drinker. Yay, I love coffee!

Have posted for ages was reading the posts and just made the cauliflower rice so yum thanks AD’s

Hello ADs
I am a bit late today with my first post of the day as I was stuck with meetings at work since morning.
But heaps of activity here and took me a while to catch up. Keep the determination flowing Aussies!!!!
Happy fast day to everyone fasting today. My fast day yesterday finished at 505 cals …Phew……….. Saved myself from going a lot over…LOL

And love the post about acronyms and LOL…. it did make me LOL….

Uptight, I changed my weigh in day from Saturday to today as well as I will be away on holidays this weekend and wanted to have my weigh in sorted out.

So, finally scales moved and were good to me. Lost 600 grams this week. Current weight is 71.7 kgs.

My target for Jan end was 71.5kgs. So, I take this as target met as I will be fasting tomorrow but won’t weigh in.
So total loss in 16 weeks is 13 kgs. Gotta be happy with that!!! Now I am waiting to see that ever wanted 60’s figure on that scale. oh it feels so much better. Target for Feb end is 68.5 kgs….

News on OHs 5:2 journey: Hubby lost 1.2 kgs this week too and his weight loss in just under 3 weeks is 5.3 kgs

Gotta run to another meeting and before I go… congrats to all who have seen positive figures on scales and who are settling into fasting successfully. Cheerios!!!

I have got to 12.30 an donly one tummy grumble which I fixed with a cup of tea. could go on longer but not sure I should – do I have my coleslaw or not? that is the question hmmm?
