Also this, for other countries. I find the other blog, Outfit Posts, really brilliant as she mostly travels for work and also not a “20 something”, so her clothing choices are a bit more conservative (mature?). Also, they all talk about packing flip-flops (thongs, the footwear 🙂 ) – these are cheaply and plentifully available in most of Asia, so I find it easier to buy locally then and throw away a pair than cart it along.

wow what fun we’ve been having.
FD yesterday, an apple (and a swig of psyllium husk) for brekky, two eggs for lunch, then vege soup and some pistacios for dinner.
But then according to MFP I went 250 cals over my goal with a few glasses of Johnny Walker L:) But with “exercise” I was under 500 cals. Not sure if that counts. But hey it was worth it 🙂
Chicken kebab for lunch today and don’t it feel ugly. I might stick with the eggs even on FDs!! Way cheaper too!
Team, I looked up some information on LCHF (All Hail the Internet!). It’s supposed to work really well, but in my case, as I eat very less animal protein, I am still trying to get my head around it.

Hi All!
Oh Gyps – you certainly rolled out the emotional roller coaster for us all with your verse this time. Was laughing out loud at your haikus…knew you’d ‘rise’ to the challenge 😆 But then your poem about the dog had me crying into my coffee… so beautiful, thank you. Enjoy your family do and knock ’em dead with your poetry!
CG – the whole of Ireland is reeling at this tragedy. The extent of the injuries to the survivors is not known yet but bound to be life-changing. Unlike you, I can’t see God in any of this. Keep your chin up now, pal, until the op is over. We know our fearless leader can do anything she puts her mind to!! 🙂
Lotus – you are a gem with all the research you do for everyone and your haikus were fab, well done!
SJ – very wise words, as usual. I think we are all reaching our natural low weight limit…I have been bobbing up and down by the same kilo for months now and I agree that to try any harder would probably make me give up and I’m not going to do that!!!! So if it’s very slow or static from here on in I’m just going to accept that and know I can keep control of my weight as and when I need to. That is so much better than before 5:2 and I’m happy with that 🙂
Mike – great to hear from you again. I think my OH is ready to consider joining me on 5:2, from a guy’s point of view, what do you think would be the clincher to persuade him to give it a go?
Off to do the usual weekly chores for my sister today and then reward myself with visit to favourite coffee shop! 😉 Sun is shining and looks like it’s going to be a lovely weekend too. Fathers’ Day on Sunday so bringing OH to that fab manor house for lunch. 🙂 Have a great weekend ADers!!
CG – I went over my FD too today and it came up to 600 cals. Oh well, will focus on Non FDs this week to see where the ball is in my court. In my case, I have to lose another 10 kilos to be in normal BMI and really hoped to get under 70kilos before the endocrinologist meeting on 15 July. That means another 3 kilos by then. Possible?
We shall persevere and be bloody minded about it.
SJ – from experience in various Asian airports with their baggage systems- better to be carry-on only and also be wary of anyone giving any thing to you to carry for them etc etc ( ok I probably sound like your mum now!) . Also be careful of taking painkillers with Codein (allowed in Aus) – it’s a prohibited drug in many countries… I don’t want scare you – just heads up 🙂
I also tend to carry original prescriptions for any medicines I carry to be on safe side, in case they ask at customs. If you need them – carry tampons with you – rest pretty much else is standard but tampons are oddly made there…
Lotus – the manor house is a bit posh. I went recently for lunch with the ladies from my french class and it was lovely; both food and staff. Luckily, I have two nice tea dresses which I have worn to summer weddings in the last year or two – I wore one the last time and I will wear the other this time! 🙂
Good grief, I have been unable to read emails etc for a few days and it has taken me ages to get through this!
Lotus, I liked the article you posted.
A cruise might be a possibility for me, as you mentioned Brisbane, but couldn’t do June.
So I think I am up a kilo and a half roughly and it isn’t water weight, well not much.I have been making good choices when I can but having wines and the odd catered function.
I was in St Petersburg and then back in Helsinki where people are generally not overweight and healthy food is easy to find. I must mention public toilet cubicles. They are tiny compared with what we are used to and can’t imagine them being able to build them like that in Aus. or the U.S.
The Finns eat loads of fish and vegetables, as well as some meat and all those berries.I went to a dinner where we were served reindeer. It actually reminded me of the flavour of lambs fry. And when desserts are served they are small portions. They seem to have it nailed!
So I have just flown into Italy and we are about to find somewhere for dinner. I am finally somewhere warm! On the last leg now, I will be home next Thursday and am looking forward to it. Cheers, all. I probably won’t have much of an opportunity to post before I am home.
Can’t wait to start my regular fasting routine again.
Good Morning Gang
Happened to me again, wrote a full post and lost it…Grrrr
SJ, happy travels to Vietnam
Upt, glad that you are enjoying your time away from home, this extra weight or water weight or bloat weight will come off in no time.
CG, hope you are feeling better now
Doggy, I agree that its a good idea to get the knees checked if you are suffering from pain. They say its not good to endure pain for a long time.
Lotus, you really are an amazing researcher. We would have been lost without you.
I am at work, slaving it out…LOL
Enjoy the weekend Gang!!!
Morning. It is a much better morning for me today. Had over 8 hours sleep and raring to go! Age can be a bummer sometimes in that the busier you get even when tired out sleep just eludes one. Made myself wait til normal bedtime and it worked. Anyone else finding the late sixties like this?
Doggie your knee sounds wretched, good you’re going to get help. Can just imagine Pepper’s excitement at so many ‘friends’ all at once.
Gyps, I’m sure your poem is great, I’m a wuss where animals are concerned so didn’t read it. Sorry. We had a young aboriginal man board with us when I was a kid and he used to go into his bedroom and sing along to his guitar. One of his favourites is ‘Old Shep” and I was a watery mess. Used to sob my heart out every time from my own room! My own kids refused to walk out of the movie theatre with me after we saw Charlotte’s Web because I was still sobbing. And she was just a spider!!! Was even put out of the classroom in primary school to read my own library book when the class had Black Beauty as class study. Hopeless case.
Up love hearing your travel experiences, how the other half live! Be good to get home tho I guess and get into routine again.
Fit you get to flit off to countries for hols we only dream about visiting. Lucky you! Hope your favourite café trip helped with the mum blues 🙂
CG not long to go now, pain free yippee! Something to focus on post-op 🙂
Lotus thanks for your cheery helpful posts and SJ will give my loss pattern a bit of a think later.
Still have to catch up on a number of back pages so to everyone I’ve missed and all the above have a good weekend. YY xx
Hi All!
I agree with you all about how animals tug on our heart strings. Got it from my dad, the first time I saw him cry when I was a child was when our dog died and my mum had to give him a glass of whiskey (unheard of during the day and a weekday at that) for the shock. When I was in hospital for a month before my first born, I had a photo of my dog on my locker, not my OH!!!
YY – Yes it is great to be so close to the variety of countries in Europe, but lots of my nieces and nephews are heading to Oz and perhaps will settle there permanently, so that is hard because they are so far from home. I had a lovely slice of orange and almond drizzle cake at the coffee shop….mmmm, delish!! 😉
CG – sorry you have to go through so much hassle before your op but it’s wonderful that your friend can come early to learn the ropes so that you can rest easy and concentrate on just you for a change!! Will be thinking of you all this week and especially on the 25th. Xxxxxx
Up – sounds fabulous, have a ball and bring back some nice recipes to remind you of your travels when you get back home. Ciao bella!!!
Hello team. I was MIA yesterday and had lots of reading to catch up. Gypsy your poem is great and so sad. Needless to say I’m a animal lover big time and am in floods of tears at any sad animal story or movie. Lotus was it you who gave us the link to the Catylist programme on low carb eating? I sat and watched it and found it very interesting. I’m definitely revising my ideas on healthy eating. Butter instead of margarine sure looks good to me.
Someone mentioned packing. I’ve been lucky enough to travel quite a lot. I’ve found that one invariably takes too much stuff. Last year we were in Italy and France for a month. I had one suitcase that weighed less than 10 plus a backpack for carry on baggage. It’s was quite enough. Who cares if one wears the same clothes day in and day out. Most people wouldn’t notice anyhow.
I agree that I’m not going to loose much weight over the winter months. I know I eat too many carbohydrates. Particularly bread and rice. I find it difficult to be without them at this time of year. FD again tomorrow. I’m going to check out some new meal ideas as I tend to eat the same thing every FD and that gets tedious. Enjoy the rest of the weekend all.
X Dawg
CG I didn’t watch Marley and Me – just know I can’t. Unfortunately it stays with me if I do long after the movie. I also think Disney is a bit of a sadist masquerading as “heartwarming”. Phooey. I certainly don’t think you are whinging at all but rather that you have Aussie stoicism. Maybe we should change the name to Aussie Stoics 🙂 in honour of you.
Fit know what you mean about younger ones wanting to move on. Guess they believe “It’s a small world after all” (Disney again 🙂 ). Your cake sounds lovely.
Doggie I can’t do without some carbs. Trying to cut it back and bread and rice are staples, especially at this time of year as you say. Usually opt for the same thing FD too just because I don’t have to think about it and the only times I tried to vary, ended up with not enough cals left so had to cut back. That means hungry bedtime! Would like some new meal ideas though.
Lots of very wet Maggies at my back door, better go and feed them. Have a good day everyone. YY xx
Good Morning Country Girl…..I have just joined the forum. I am 69 and have been on this great diet for 3weeks now. I love it. I even count my calories on normal days but not as strict. My downfall was Sweets. I almost ended up like the Hindenburg.
I cant believe how quick the weight dropped off. I have lost 3.1/2kgs in this time. From 78kgs to 74.5.
Its a miracle, really. I didn’t even lose that with the chemist hunger suppressants.
I also feel a lot healthier with only those few kgs less. When I sit I feel more comfortable without the huge balloon above my waist. As I am only 5’4″.
My plan is to go down to 65kg.
My friend got me on this diet……she’s been doing it for 3yrs. I can’t believe how thin she is now. She has also started eating butter and all the healthy fats….
Dear Country Gal don’t give up…..I should never have let my self go with all the weight gain. Those blasted chocolate bars…
Wow as others say there is so much going on it’s hard to remember it all! We are a busy bunch of beavers.
However……CG it’s so close now & do hope you’re feeling much better re your cold? We want you in tiptop shape ready for that op that’s going to have you pain-free. Just tell the surgeon (no pressure or anything) that a whole group of ladies online are relying on him to do a fabulous job with you!! That should do it.
Up have a great time in Italy on the last leg (I think) of your travels. You’ll be so glad to get home…after travels I reckon it’s a wonderful feeling to come home, you appreciate everything so much……even mundane things.
KB welcome to our little group. And you’re sure off to a fab start. Your weight loss will slow down but stick with us & we’ll all reach our goals. CG will keep u on track.
Dawg (like that abbreviation!) packing was about me & Vietnam (6 weeks away still). Lotus (I think) gave me several links that were very helpful re clothes/packing for humidity. And I’m determined this time to ONLY pack just enough & not come back with stuff I’ve never worn. Do it every time despite all out travelling. Definitely decided I need more plain stuff that’s interchangeable. My summer wardrobe was very bright & colourful but not so good for mix & match.
As several have said I can’t do without carbs in the winter. I know that I would go over my limit bigtime if I did that. But you can still fit it in if you have say a vegie soup (CG enjoyed our Curried Cauli soup for lunch again today) and had a rustic baguette with it – only small slices. But I find I need it with soup as it’s not filling on its own depending on what type of course. And Lotus? I bought the bread you suggested – 2 slices for 115 cals – and it’s very nice. Will buy again.
Well a very wintry day here today so time to retreat with a book or my knitting for grandy No 7 in the US. Oh had these homemade Fish Fingers for dinner last night & they’re yummy. http://www.52recipes.co.uk/2013/04/24/home-made-fish-fingers-with-lemon-mayo/ and at 181 cals a serve they’re a steal!! Wasn’t a FD last night so had with oven chips but could have with other vegies for a FD & have a very lowcal meal. The texture of them was soo delicious. Give them a try if you like fish, or want to try something different. Can also freeze before the cooking stage. Versatile & so easy. Stay warm & dry all & CG just know that we’re thinking of you this week. sj XXX
Afternoon all
Just popped on to say hi – still here and have been reading everyone’s post – wow so much happening. In regards to any one owing an animal – you are very brave..I don’t have any as I like my emotions to stay on a level ground and due to losses in the past have elected to stay pet free (ps would love one but am chicken).
I’m on the up/down roller coaster at the moment but may have bells palsy rather than sinus – so off to the doctors again. Do antibiotics interfer with the 5:2?
LOVED the photos. Come on summer!
Yes it is Moongal…was it you who suggested it? It’s so hard with so many pages to go back & find who said what – I usually just give up & have a stab in the dark!! Fits so good into a FD and is very tasty gluten-free bread & so low in cals. Great substitute but u can still have your carbs through the winter esp. Mmm Moongal u got me thinking now…croutons in my soup with that bread (oven baked of course)!
About to boil my eggs for tomorrow’s FD & already have the other 1/2 of my chicken/bacon casserole in the freezer for dinner so all sorted. Add in lots of hot drinks – herbal teas of all sorts & you’re sorted. Anyone tried the Madame Flavour range in Coles…some yummy ones, including Soothing Mint Lavender Tisane and Lemongrass Lime and Ginger Tisane. They’re the pyramid teabags that always feel a bit more special to me & not as expensive as some other pyramid ones.
I reckon find anything to add into your FD that makes it feel a bit special, something that you keep for FD’s alone maybe & helps you get through it. Anyone else have ideas like that? Plan & prepare folks & you’ll do fine, even in the cold. sj XX
Whoa! That was mean of me to leave you all bawling while I went off for a fun weekend! but it’s not worthy(art of any form)if it don’t stir somethin’, they reckon! Sorry mates, I’m laughing, (blame Lotus) but I shouldn’t be, because the dog story was true blue, except for the dignified end (which destroyed me at the time) but it was 30 yrs ago now. He came off a property where the infant son was found drowned in the dam (as the autopsy proved,) but the child was found high on the bank, obviously pulled from the water. What really happened no one knows, but as the dog ran barking to the homestead yards it seems likely that he pulled the 3yr old out and then ran looking for the boss. It was just too hard for the mum to deal with the tragedy of it all and not pin the blame somewhere. I saw my boy and that dog together for years and he really did save him from our flooded creek. but he never went anywhere, just barked up a storm til I found them. It was my younger boy and he was old enough to know better, plus could swim (ended up college champ), so it was a pretty torrential flow and really heroic of the old dog to get him to shore, way down stream. Sadly, it was only a few weeks later that we found our dog dead on the boundary fence. Shot by a vile neighbour who let his cattle get into our fields often and my lovely boy was very protective of what he knew to be his territory. He would have chased the cattle back through the broken fence, and patrolled it til we got home (we were only out for a few hours). The neighbour denied any knowledge of it, but the fence was obviously repaired with new tie wire and he had already told a friend of ours that he ‘hated Alsations’ and would shoot ours if he got half the chance. He flogged his own dogs and they truly were a menace. Nasty man. It was an unworthy end for a my dog, so I gave him a better one.
That’s what I call ‘poetic justice’. The shooter didn’t fare so well. (guess that version doesn’t make you feel any better, huh?) sorry.
Anyway, I loved everyone’s input on the poetic front. On all fronts. You are all such doers! suejen that post on your progress was helpful. it’s pretty much how I’m going. Slowly. and it’s true that it’s really all about lifestyle sustainability. stricter diets don’t last.
CG, Breathe! you are all keyed up about the Op. no time to be counting calories. It seems to be all falling into place for you. We’ll all be thinking of you. One step at a time. Luck and hugs. ned to go get my eggs boiled for tomorrows fast. I ate far too much hungi tucker yesterday, but oh, the music was wonderful! have a good week all. xxx gyps
Oooh yes…about to pour my glass of wine into one of our new glasses that OH tried to put away into the cupboard. I said to him don’t be daft at our age you just use them all the time, why not enjoy them now for goodness sake! So we do. Otherwise when I’m 70 or 80 I’ll find them safely in a cupboard somewhere & think Oh we hardly ever used them…what a waste. Tastes better too eh XXXX
Gosh only 4 more sleeps to go CG!!!! So glad you’ve got friends/family all ready to assist you.
Dawg – Since we nearly always have what you would call winter weather here, it’s hard not to want to fill up on warming, satisfying carbs but it can be done. I keep spuds to a minimum, use brown rice sparingly and very rarely eat bread…Weightwatcher’s do a brown, wholemeal bread that is very low in calories and I used to use that alot but don’t bother any more. I think if you cut back bit by bit, you lose the urge until you don’t miss them any more. Wish I could say the same for chocolate 😉 You’ll have to give me tips for packing for the grand trip to Oz next year 🙂
YY – you’re right about the young ones; they travel the length and breadth of the world and don’t give it a second thought! Oh well, just have to prove we’re as good as they are and have an annual AD reunion in different parts of the world! 😉
KB – welcome here, so glad you followed the example of you friend and took up this way of life 🙂 Well done on the weight loss too, you have made a great start!
CG – I’m glad you’re getting yourself prepared mentally and physically for the week ahead and do allow yourself to lean on others for a change – it’s time to take instead of give!! Xxxxxx
SJ – I’m sure you will have the packing down to a fine art by the time your trip comes around. I remember reading a tip about picking basics in neutral colours and then pick one accent colour for a light jacket, top, t-shirt and accessories and then you can mix and match all you want. Have fun planning and choosing! 🙂 Must have a go at the homemade fish fingers; thanks for the link.
Jenmic – good to hear from you but sorry you might have Bell’s palsy – not a nice condition but hopefully all will be well soon. Take care.
Gyps – what an amazing story about your dog, they sure are incredible, sensitive and intuitive creatures. Thanks for sharing it with us. So glad you enjoyed you family reunion; music is such a wonderful way to bring people together and to share special feelings.
My mother-in-law has been clearing out her attic and cupboards for the last few years so that there won’t be a big job to be done when she finally pops off…(as she puts it!). So she gave us a coffee set that she had received as a wedding present and although, it is not to my taste, I will use it with pleasure because of what it meant to her. I definitely agree that we should use our best glasses etc and get the pleasure from them now, what are we waiting for? Life’s too short not to….xxxxx
Good morning everyone, have not had time as yet to catch up on everyone’s posts.
I need to talk to someone and you AD’s are it. I am sure we have a counseller in our midst?
Last week my OH has had very bad anxiety and depression, he is sweating profusely and is getting his migraines back. Luckily he has recognised this and is doing something about it, went to the GP who has referred him to a Counsellor (seeing him as I write this) and I am very anxious, waiting for his call. All weekend he has been crying, which breaks my heart, I have to be strong for him but now I am at work, I am not coping too well. Sorry to put this out there, we all have our own issues, but it is just great to get this out of my head and onto paper, so to speak. I don’t know what else to do for him, he is scared that this will not go away and he will feel like this forwver. I am hoping he can get some medication.
Weight went up on the weekend as well, but at this stage I am not very worried about that. Although I have been on this WOL since Feb and have only lost 3kgs, so that is not great. I know that I will lose it eventually and the width of my tummy has gone down, so that is something. Just raving now to get my mind off things.
Have a great day team xxx
Oh DiiP… I so hope and pray your OH gets some resolution or comfort from the Counsellor.
Keep strong and stay no this thread. One of us will be there to support you on this journey.
I am not a counsellor, Raven is a pschologist, but she is away I think. Not sure of others. But a lot of medical professionals and compassionate women on this thread.
When you stress levels go down, the weight will shift by itself.
Drink mint or chamomile tea, and remember that he is good hands and will be helped soon.
{{Hugs}}
FD today and start of new Low-Carb phase for me…. Not sure if it will help with weight shift, but had a funny moment yesterday at the doctors (I had gone after about 4 months) – she was looking past me and calling my name as she didn’t recognize me after weight loss LOL.
I have the blood tests tomorrow that will show the real progress from the WOL (checking Sugar, insulin, cholesterol etc)
Doit – so sorry to hear your OH is going through such a bad time. Is this something that has happened before? Do you know what has triggered it? Obviously, I’m not looking for personal details, but just wondering if you can reassure him if he has come through this before, then he can do it again. If not, I’m sure he is very scared so you being strong and steady for him will be a great help. However, you will need someone to lean on too, so please make sure you have a good friend or close family member you can rely on. I’m sure there is some medication that can be given to your OH in the short term to allow him to become calmer and able to think straight. It is a hugely positive thing that he is going to a counsellor, so that is a very good start. Whatever the problem or cause of your husband’s distress, he will need to be in the right frame of mind to either tackle it or change how he feels about it. Don’t even think about 5:2 for the moment, but please keep in touch and we will all be here to listen and share the load if we can. Take care xxxx
