  • Day 40 USA, Minnesota
Yesterday’s FD, I ended over my 25% of TDEE by about a 100 or so. OH brought home two delicious looking brats that I couldn’t resist. I did throw out the buns, though.
I may do a FD today instead of tomorrow and then be done with FDs for the challenge. Nothing but coffee and water so far today. This evening I am attending a potluck. If very high carb and/or high sugar foods are my only choices (as they often are at potlucks), I will try to tough it out until I get home and have something healthy. Yogurt and berries after a lettuce salad with chicken and olive oil.
Good luck everyone. Cizzy2, it’s so nice of you to help out your elderly neighbor; I’m sure she cherishes you and your help!

Day 40 Cornwall UK. Fast day today and been so busy the hunger pangs have been biting!! Cleaned the house! Doesn’t happen too often when the sun is shinning as the garden calls! I did manage an hour digging then OH suggested a bike ride to a National Trust house, so I had a miso soup to keep me going and headed off. A lovely ride about 12 miles in all, Godolphin house is beautiful but the wild flower meadow was stunningly beautiful!!
Got baked fish and veg for supper and can’t wait!!
I will continue 5.2 until I’m at my target weight. and will keep posting during the β€˜break’! This forum has been a lifeline; so encouraging, informative and reading the daily posts have been such a help and an education, thank you one and all!!
I just love this wol but it is hard going some days, too much temptation! on our bike ride OH had helpfully packed a couple of snack bars which he offered me half way up a very steep hill, to give me energy!!! A big fat NO to that offer!!!! I kept peddling!
I will weigh and measure tomorrow and hope that this week of stringent exercise and healthy eating will show on the scales and tape measure!! But maybe I’ve built more muscle which as we know weighs heavy!
I just feel so well, the change from 2 months ago when I had no energy and ached so much I could hardly get out of bed in the mornings is incredable, truely life changing!!
Onwards and downwards until we reach our goals!

Pacific NW USA: Day 40 of our 42 day challenge!!! FD

I’m doing two b2b FD’s with tea, water and broth during day with 500 cal dinners because we have dinners scheduled with board members and retirements this last week of our 42 day challenge.

Ciren2 & Rocy65 – I will definitely be continuing 5:2 over our hiatus and I will be checking in to this forum to see if anyone has posted, probably because I can’t imagine starting or ending my day without it now that I’ve made it a 6 week habit!

I have hopes that my scale will continue the downward pattern I’ve established with this first try with 5:2. My goal is to continue to lose weight at the same rate as this first 6 weeks. I don’t know if that’s possible since I’m totally a newbie. I’ve had a history of disappointment with past weight loss goals so I’m really letting myself go out on a limb even letting you all know my hopes. I realize some of my original weight loss was water loss but also the first few weeks I didn’t really know what I was doing so maybe with more precision at this stage, weekly weigh ins and adjusting my NFD cals I can do it.

ThirdTimeLucky – you’ve been my 5:2 role model because we have some similarities, I want to follow in your foot steps and get to a target weight! I’ll miss your posts but I hope at some point to be able to find out how you’re doing on maintenance! Good luck!

Anaide – keep your toesies toasty! (Wonder how your translator will deal with that??!!)

Melilotus – just read your updated profile – congrats. It’s a reminder to the rest of us to do the same.

Dollybird – you are also a role model for not sacrificing yourself for the job (read – boss). Something I’ve got to remind myself often!

Quebequoise – how many mgs of melatonin do you take? I’ve tried various meds from doctors in the past and I definitely had too many side effects to make it worth while.

AuroraMagic – it seems most people pick 2 consistent FD’s (fast days) but then flex as need be. For instance this week I’m doing two consequitive days because of other conflicts.

    And …Exhale – happy trails!

ABC1 – I bet you bounce right back! Hope so!

backtothefuture – nothing that Google does not answer me!

    Thanks for the reminder!

    Brazilian hugs

    Back2the future

Melatonine. I had a chat with my pharmacist. You can buy 3, 5, or 10 mgs.

I decided to start with 5. If you need more, you can double to come to 10. In my case 5 is OK.

It seems that my sleeping rythm was all mixed up. A few nights with melat helped me regulate that.

Note : the first night I took it only around midnight… Bad idea, I felt sleepy the next morning. Take it about 1 hour before your regular bed time.

Good luck. Sleeping is so important.

Anaide – tootsies are feet and toes – keeping them warm is them aim within the phrase used. πŸ™‚ Hope you’re translator sorts this one out OK! πŸ™‚

    Back2thefuture – thanks.
I’m planning to start Monday but I have a few good things going for me.
I rarely eat breakfast anyway. I often eat a late lunch (salad) and like protein and veg for dinner…
I hope that I can stick to at his with an occasional yoghurt or whatever!
I think that I might photograph every meal and perhaps do a blog!
So I’ve 51 days from tomorrow… so I’m already being very good certainly well within my TDEE allowance… and I’ll try and be good (within TDEE) over the weekend. But from Monday I’ll be really strict and do my very very best! πŸ™‚

UK day 40 well it had to happen at some point…..weighed myself today after a fast day and no change from last week. Feeling a little wobbly but pounds have been falling off so far so it was bound to happen at some point. Feeling a bit irritated because i upped my exercise and tried really hard but i suppose this shift could have upset my rhythm and perhaps i need to rethink my water intake too…..

Here’s hoping i drop something before my last weigh in of this challenge on sunday because going it alone for 3 weeks stuck in limbo doesnt feel comfortable……grrrr!!!!

    Day 40?– Colorado, USA

Wow! I’ve got a lot of catching up on posts to do!

I’m so happy to hear that several of the group latched onto my bracelet idea!! Makes for a fantastic visual cue as your hand is moving toward your mouth. Gives me a moment to pause & ask myself if I’m really hungry or maybe just thirsty or bored or stressed…

My favorites are there bracelets you’ve found with words like “stay strong.” Love it!! Hope they work well fort you!

    Hi Meli:

You will not lose weight constantly or consistently on 5:2 (or any other diet).

This might help illustrate what I mean: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/really-no-weight-loss/

    Good Luck!

Quebecoise and Back, jumping into melatonin discussion. I saw a sleep specialist for a while who said the following about melatonin: the 1 mg over time is better than larger doses at once. His recommended protocol was take 1 mg three hours before planned bedtime and then one more at bedtime. Higher doses of melatonin do not necessarily translate to better sleep — but it sure will give you some REALLY interesting and vivid dreams. Sometimes too vivid.

Australia Day 41, NFD and last official weigh in day for me and what a day! I have lost 8kgs over these 41 days and have lost 3cm from my bust, 7cm from my waist and 4cm from my hips! Thank you Coda and thank you 5:2! I will continue the WOL over the break and will check in with everyone on this forum. Good luck to all!

    USA 40 of 42
    Sorry I missed yesterday,babysitting a 2y/o and it was my sons b-day!
    FD going well,a bit hungry!

Aussie day 41 reading all the posts drinking coffee going to miss that but i will check in, also going to stick with 5-2 and do 16.8 on NFD’s 200 g’s off my mini challenge doing my last FD for this challenge so hopefully tomorrow it will be gone.Congrats to everyone for staying the course.

Day 40, California. Today is a FD since I ingested too many calories last night. It is 2 pm, water and tea so far today. I want to save my calories for a light dinner. A sneak peak at the scales shows some loss.

Thanks K-lo for the melatonin advice. I have been taking 5 mg for a while and have had some wild dreams. I am going to try your suggestion. I started taking melatonin because I saw on Dr Oz that it was being used for GERD with great results. I was desperate for relief of my symptoms. Well, it didn’t work but I felt I was sleeping better so I continued to take it during the work week. Since I started 5:2 and have lost weight, my GERD symptoms have eased so much, I have stopped taking Prilosec. I knew my weight was one of the major causes, with diet choice being the other.

My Chiropracter thanked me today about telling him about the 5:2 diet. He has done some research on the topic and feels he can offer this diet advice to some of his patients.

Time to get busy with household chores and to check on my neighbor. Wishing a great day to all.

day 40 USA,today fating, keeping calories only under 500
tomorrow will eat normally without counting….
today on my fasting day feel horribly hungry not like other fasting days which I do not feel as much hungry as now but trying to keep myself busy as much as i can
    happy dieting and fasting everyone:)

    Australia – Day 41 – 1 day to go of challenge πŸ™‚

These are my stats for this challenge.

Starting weight: 84kg Current weight: 79.2kg Total loss: 4.8kgs
    Hips: 121cm Current Hips: 113cm – Loss – 8cm off hips
    Bust: 107cm Current Bust: 101cm – Loss – 6cm off Bust
    Waist: 103cm Current waist: 93cm – Loss – 10cm off waist

No wonders I needed new clothes! In saying this ^ I hadn’t lost any centimeters in the 2 months previous to this challenge. But I had brought a new tape measure which could have caused a variation. But I kept the tape measure at the start and have used it to cancel any variation.

I too will be sticking to my fasting until the new challenge, but will enjoy a break from posting every day πŸ™‚

Today is an eating day πŸ™‚ Have a great day all!

    Australia, day 41, nonFD,

Great reading everyone’s posts again, this morning. While we have the 3 weeks personal journey time I will still be posting, but probably not every day. Looking forward to the next challenge in July. I don’t put a date on set mini goals or final goal weight, I just take the weight loss as it comes. It’s more important to me that I keep my food nutritionally balanced and I’m not prepared to do long term deprivation to get to a set date. I need this to be a sustainable and healthy way of life WOL or of eatingWOE, and doing 5:2 has taught me so much about how I personally react to food physically, mentally and emotionally, even though I thought I knew a lot already. With the onset of ill health (overnight by way of a nasty virus) I’ve had 18 years of becoming overweight and having a body functioning so differently to how it did before. I’m quite happy to lose the weight as it comes while I re-establish how my body works with food now, and I normalise my weight. I’m not prepared to get there as fast as possible or do something I can’t carry on with. 5:2 has given me back a body better able to cope with my health challenges. I am very grayeful

    Onwards and Downwards,
    Merry

Good morning from South Australia Day 41

I have managed to lose about a kilo over our challenge and much more importantly kept to this WOE and not gained. I am much lighter than I have been for years so even a kilo over 6 weeks is good news. I am in the healthy BMI range now and my waist measurement is sometimes close to the 82cms it is meant to be. I tend to get bigger as the day goes by. My main goal is to keep to two thirty six hour fasts a week to reset my body and give it a chance to use some of the food I put in it all the rest of the time. I am hoping by doing this I will avoid Diabetes 2 and joint issues due to the stress of too much weight.

So far I have been on the 5:2 diet for 38 weeks but still each week I wake up hoping I will get through successfully. It is still far from a habit but I think every week I keep going the more chance I have of it one day just feeling completely natural and routine. I don’t want to regain all the weight I have worked so hard to lose plus a bit more. I don’t want to feel so tired, ill and defeated ever again.

It’s lovely to have met such a supportive and interested group who are all on the same journey and I will certainly keep on posting each day. Thank you Coda for setting this challenge up. Through this thread I have bought and read books and looked up things online that have given me a greater insight into why I and all my family have got so big despite trying so hard to get slim. It is tough to try so hard and still be unsuccessful it is no wonder so many people just give up. I am hoping this is going to be a real permanent solution and I am going to give it my best shot.

I still have plenty to work on including trying not to eat so much on my NFDs and doing more exercise and still trying to work out the best diet for me.

Did anyone else see the program Trust Me I’m A Doctor with Dr Moseley. They looked at some research from Israel that showed that different people get different insulin responses from different foods due to their different gut bacteria. So whilst one person might get a big spike when eating pasta another person might not get a spike from pasta at all but mangos might really affect them. I thought when I saw this “What!” So low calorie? High fibre low carb? individual diets based on your gut bacteria? Mediterranean Diet? or is it just dependent on When you eat? What is the best alternative? Anyway for now I am still drinking wine and enjoying birthday cake.

All the best to everyone and Onwards and Downwards

Hi Qsue – Happy Australia Day to you and all Australians (inc my sister now!) πŸ™‚ Welcome here, too – from another newbie! πŸ˜€

Yes I’ve seen it – really interesting. I love facts and truth, can know that it is based of fact not ‘belief’.
I’m only just beginning but I like Dr MM. He did another program about ‘low responders’ dealing with exercise, I’m certain I am a low responder, and in fact had figured this out years ago and this is just a good label for it but now with solid fact behind it! Funny how our gut-instinct helps us know ourselves before our knowledge has caught up!
There’s a mass of really interesting fact based information in the Newbie section. I just listened to a speech by Jason Fung on you tube, from a link on the newbie page, about fats including cholesterol, all absolutely fascinating.
I entered my data and it said my 5 days can be 1700 calories which I find more than I need. The two days only at 500-600 is often what I do anyway but not this organised. So now that I know this is scientifically proven to work long term I’m happy to try it probably for a year.
But if this time next year I have succeeded to lose my weight and keep it off I will be totally thrilled.

Australia day 41. This will be my last post in this challenge. I weighed in today as I’m not sure the hotel will have scales tomorrow. Well this challenge was my first go at 5:2 and I am pleased to say it’s been a success. I have lost 3.5 kilos over the 6 weeks. I have developed a comfortable routine of fasting on Tuesdays and Thursdays, played around with some great recipes and kept my sanity! Thanks for the sharing everyone. I will be continuing on my own and will keep an eye on the new thread from time to time.

UK day 41 – Hoping to sneak in one last FD before the challenge closes. My weigh in day is Sunday, so may not post a final result until then.

    NL day 41
NFD. Will post end results tomorrow.

    Northern Spain

    Day 40/41

Hello everyone – missed yesterday – sorry
I am on a NFD today and it’s wonderful.
We are all coming to the end now and believe me when I say that although I might notice a slight difference, people all around notice a bigger one ( or should that be a smaller one!)

I still have a job despite my protestations the other day!!
I suppose it’s early days yet!!!

I hope everyone has a Great Friday

Cheers and thanks for all of your support

Day 41 Surrey….Not much to say about yesterday, really busy with grandchildren! Today I am going for a FD, and I gather tomorrow report on progress so far, since I joined towards the end of May. I am feeling slightly unsure about today, but posting here makes me want to succeed with it. Saying to myself, you can have it tomorrow.

US SE Day 41 FD. Will report stats tomorrow. Good luck all.

    Day 41– Colorado, USA

SongBirdMe– after this 42 Day Challenge, I plan to continue on with 5:2 until I reach my goal (I’d like to lose another 12 lbs./ about 5kg.)

Once I reach goal, my plan is to continue with just one Fasting Day per week for 6:1. Probably keep it on Mondays to give my body & digestive system a rest after the weekend’s food!

I’d like to continue 6:1 long term for the additional health benefits of intermittent fasting (such as, slowed aging of cells, autophagy, and reduced risks of cancer, weight gain, dementia. )

AuroraMagic– for me it’s easiest to select my 2 Fasting Days in advance & stick to them. Mondays & Wednesdays work best due to my specific work week. Some people like to pick their 2 days based on work or social obligations they have in the coming week.
It’s what works best for you! Good luck!

    Day 41 (again)

When this Challenge is done, I still plan to come by this thread to update my progress & read all your wonderful posts. I hope others will still be stopping by here to continue the conversation!!

It has become such a part of my day, I really look forward to touching base with my “pen pals”. So encouraging & uplifting!
Hope to see many (if not all) of us still checking in! πŸ™‚

US, Day 41, and another gorgeous morning in NYC.

HappyMargo, I agree about continuing and I may be changing my name to HappyKaren for today. I broke through 120 (lbs)!! I tried on a few dresses last night that I had put away “for the duration”, and they all fit. Doing a major happy dance.

Thank you, Coda, for keeping us all honest, motivated and on track. At 60, I’m wearing size 6 again.

USA, Day 41. Hooray! Another 36 hour no-calories fast is completed! Scale smiled at me in the morning. NFD today. Having my breakfast. πŸ™‚
Last day tomorrow. We are almost there…

    K-Lo,
Size 6 !!! and less than 120 lb!!!! Fireworks are here!!! Great job.

    Dollybird,
We really need to stand up to bullies sometimes. Respect!

    ETJ,
    What a wonderful results! Congrats.

    Coda,
Thank you for organizing the challenge. You motivated so many people. Cannot wait to hear how many survive the challenge, and how many we lost.

Day 41. Wisconsin, USA. I didn’t post yesterday. That is the only day I have missed posting in this challenge. Darn it! The whole day was kind of bust as it pertains to this challenge, but a terrific day other wise. We were at our son’s college orientation. For lunch, the college served chicken Parmesan. The pasta was just regular pasta, the chicken was breaded. They served rolls on the side, and cookies for dessert. It wasn’t a FD for me.

My family tells me I am a food snob; I guess they are right. Meals like that strike me as nutritionally ridiculous. Didn’t stop me from eating it though.

I just read everyone’s posts I missed. Congratulations to you all for your hard work and diligence. You have inspired me.

Today is a FD. I will report my final stats tomorrow, and I will certainly be checking in now and then for inspiration until the next challenge starts.

    Happy Weekend!!!

Day 41 IL, USA – NFD for me. Made it through my FD yesterday, but sure was hard as I threw out some freezer items that had been in there far too long. Some sponge cake dessert cups I was sure had freezer burn. Yep, had to take a little nibble. They weren’t bad, but those 20-30 calories I ate of one sure did taste good on a FD!

Edzeko, I had to think of you when I saw a post about a dozen or so little places in Wisconsin for delicious food. Wow, all of them had what looked like very fattening foods. One was one in Monroe, just 15 miles north of me. I also saw a post that CHEESE is addicting, like drugs! I believe it.

Thanks, everyone, for your advice on maintenance. I like the 6:1 idea for future times when I have lost what I want to lose. I think the major challenge then will be to keep to TDEE on NFD’s. Don’t we generally think we ‘deserve’ to eat better (more calories) on those days?

In case anyone can stomach some of these pictures of Wisconsin places to fill your face: http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/wisconsin/small-town-restaurants-wi/

    Hello Warriors!
    41 days

Tomorrow the result of our challenge!

Tessy Hi, I read a very important phrase for the diet of people ….

“We have to be happy every day”

If fat makes me unhappy, any action to solve have to make me happy.

If not all days are good, but we know that we are moving toward the solution.

A big hug for you here in Brazil.

Day 41, Gloucestershire, UK. Nearly there everyone. Fast day, my last on this challenge, just about to eat for the first time in 24 hours. Even during the space between this challenge and the next I will post from time to time….maybe every day…it has become a habit after SIX WEEKS, along with the 5:2!
An eating weekend coming up now. Hooray!!

California, day #41. NFD. Tomorrow I’m going to fast and after that again on Tuesday.

Thank you Coda and to all the participants, great job everyone! This was very helpful. I’ll be continuing with 5:2 on my own. I’ll also update my profile from time to time.

    Good luck everyone!

Ha-ha, just realized that we are on Day 41 and use the page 41 – so there is a page for each day. πŸ˜€

Hey, that’s right! It will be much easier when we start the next challenge and the date corresponds with the day!

    QuΓ©bec, day 41
Yesterday was a FD untill dinner .. And then turned into a semi fast and non fast day !!! Haha !!

My dog is undergoin an aenestesia and small intervention today. It made me a bit nervous and I HAD to eat all the great farmer cheese that OH brought from his parents’s place. I’m not angry at myself because I know that it is exceptional.

I’ll try to make tomorrow a FD but not sure I will be able to.

Nice day to all you warriors with a big hug from QuΓ©bec under the sun at last !

Pacific NW USA: Day 41 FD – last of the challenge

πŸŽ‰ πŸ’ƒπŸΏ πŸ’‹ To the www of heros on Coda’s challenge: you are mighty, you face trials of the body and spirit everyday and are ready to confront them again the next day. You do not let hurdles defeat you. You have not been distracted from your quest for health. You are all winners because you found the power to risk change, to aspire for a better lifestyle, to shoot for the stars one pound, one bra size, one missed meal at a time. You have left no stone unturned to help others. You have already taken the most important step toward winning – the first step!!

Uk day 41 nonfd no problem. Plan to fast tomorrow and then do my measurements etc to see how far ive come through this challenge. Hoping this will be the inspiration i need to keep me going till our next challenge starts or my solo challenge ends! Good luck everyone! Xxx

Day 41 Cornwall UK. NFD. Weighed and measured today and very pleased with the results will post final results tomorrow!
    ETJ Well done you!
Dollybird, I agree with everyone, you have to be strong to stand up to bullies, respect to you!
Merryme agree with all in your post! I’ve always tried to eat a healthy diet but this challenge has made me more aware of nutritional needs.
NorrieB and Quse please keep posting for support and encouragement I’m sure there will be quite a few of us there to help each other as we continue on this journey!
Just got a new book from the library: β€˜Cook yourself young’ by Elizabeth Peyton-Jones. Full of delicious recipes and nutritional advice. I’m hooked and going to buy this one!!
A little gem: from Francois De La Rochefoucauld β€˜to eat is a necessity, but to eat intellegently is an art’!
Good luck to all those on their last dast day.
Onwards and downwards! Group hug for us all!

Songbirdme – Thank you for this list! If only we could take a field trip with all our new pen pals! I will be trying to find some of these places for sure.

Cold Pizza…good catch on a page for each day. Who knows, maybe I’ll go back and reread the whole thread during the break. πŸ™‚

Day 41 California. Today is a NFD. Took a sneak peak at the scales and it’s looking good. Will post final results tomorrow after work. Great wishes for great results as we finish our challenge tomorrow.

    Switzerland day 41 – NFD
Been off my feet but will catch up for our big day tomorrow. 42 days – not to be sniffed at!

Day 41 USA, Minnesota NFD today as I did complete a successful FD yesterday. I even ate at the potluck and was SO impressed by the food the young Moms brought in: lean grilled or baked chicken, lettuce salads and mixed greens, cut up vegetables and healthy hummus and other dips, fruit, berries and yogurt dips, etc. It’s wonderful to see that people are learning to eat healthily!
I will post my results tomorrow, and I, also, plan to keep doing 5:2 during the break and reading and occasionally posting on this thread.
All of your posts have inspired and motivated me. Congratulations to everyone signing off today. It looks like we have all determined this challenge to be a success as we have learned so much about our bodies and now feel we have the tools to be in control of our weight and health!
    Good luck!

Aussie day 42 FD didn’t happen yesterday so doing it today will weigh in tomorrow.

Aus day 42. Back from holiday. So much to read! I shall enjoy catching up over my morning coffee and porridge.

Good morning from South Australia Day 42

It is June 11 and the final day of our 42 day challenge. I had a fast day yesterday and the scales fairy has been very kind this morning so I have lost around 1.5 kilos on our challenge which is what I was hoping for. I didn’t take my measurements but I can fit into my new jeans so I am happy.

This has been an amazing 42 days and so wonderful to meet you all and learn so much. It has been a very special time. I wish you all well in the 5:2 future.

In terms of my research I have learnt the glucose gets into the fat cells by a process called diffusion, there is no little back door. There are some cute pictures on the internet of how the insulin make holes in the fat cell walls so the glucose can get in. There are some animated films of the process on Youtube as well.

Congratulations to all of us who have had the grit and determination to complete the full 42 day Challenge and I am looking forward to my online medal. We should all be very proud of each other and what we have accomplished both physically and mentally. A big 42DC hug to you all.

    Onwards and Downwards

    Day 41 Scotland
Very late posting. Scales not moved any which way from last fast day so Saturday and Sunday I shall do 16:8 in a last ditch effort to get back to target. I am working both days so should be easy.
Playing with my new car took up time this evening, having to learn how to work all the new gadgets etc. First thing to learn is how to open the petrol cap so I can fill her up!
Have a great weekend everyone. Goodnight. TTL
