  • NZ Day 7 Monday 15th

Could not be more embarrassed – started three fast days last week that have lasted til the evil eating troll that periodically invades my brain took over about 2pm each day.
That’s it for beating myself up.

We all know that getting back on track is the important bit, so while I am unlikely to meet my target I WILL ADHERE TO MY PLAN this week.

BTW, if anyone knows a foolproof plan for killing that troll I’d love to hear it.

Hi Chipmunk3, I was attacked by that critter yesterday so defrosted some chicken bone broth I had and spooned that into myself. The tasty liquid filled me up and the critter took off😜 Have you cut out the sugar? I had to get rid of that to kill the cravings. I’ve shed 19 kgs so far so seems to be working for me.

Im in but then I water fast every Monday, so does that still count?

US Day 8 NFD. Ugh… ate too much last night and then ate chocolate this afternoon and feeling quite sick. Looking forward to a fast day tomorrow.. give my tummy a break 😩

Sunshine Coast Aus Day 8: Have just finished a 36 hour liquid fast but so inspired by all liquid fasting today that I’m considering making it a back to back. Well done B2t F. You are doing so well. So glad the wedding went off so well.
Rocy65, we are succeeding in this challenge in so many ways. My mood has been buoyed up by the conversations and encouragement. You too HollyLJ. This thread really is a hoot and there are so many gems. I love it.
My daughter and son in law bought the acre plot of land yesterday at auction. That means they’ll be an hour closer to us but juggling work and travel will be harder. We’ll help out as much as we can.

    Dorset UK
    sunday day ??

The scales say Im up from Thursday morning, so I need to plan the next month and especially the last week of the challenge!

    Ireland Day 8 nfd

sons and granddaughter staying for the weekend…hard to stay on track when they are around…going to do another week of 3/4 crazy but I find my fd easier to manage calories wise than my nfd go figure…

Coda thank you for the encouragement you are right of course…the scales does not always register what the eys sees….thankyou

    fd tomorrow…onwards and downwards///

Just catching up on postings – including my last one!

I made a math error: I’ve lost 52 lbs so far and have 48 to go for my long term goal. And Coda, I will try to take it in small steps.

My next small step is the 2.8 lbs I want to lose by my weigh-in on Aug 23rd (my first day back to work, 4 months on 5:2 and the day to celebrate the grand culmination of Coda’s challenges).

I’m taking a breather before we head out for dinner in Chinatown tonight, the last before a 36-48 hour fast! Good luck all you fasters and especially my fellow 5 pounders!

Thanks Fuvvie. We saw the newly weds off this morning so I got a little ease-up on the angst I typically feel when it’s all said and done the day after big family events. I’m doing my best to stay on the bright side at the end of a great vacation!

Sure bigbooty, jump in with us, the more the merrier to strengthen our mutual resolve!

Thanks Fuvvie – I’ll bear that in mind. I tend not to eat refined sugar anyway and don’t crave it – savoury stuff is my downfall.
Anyway, I have been for a big walk today and am on track for a regular nfd (dinner at the neighbours’ tonight) and psyched for an excelled FD tomorrow!

    Australia – Day 7

An eating day today. Still sitting weight wise at 73… Really hoping now to have a shift as I still need to lose 800 grams!

Yesterday I was giving my son a pony ride and hubby was acting strange. He had found 2 newborn (we didn’t know what at the time they were) one in the cats mouth and the other in the dogs mouth. He showed me, they were both bleeding and had little cuts on them and we were trying to figure out what they were (felt pretty silly once we figured it out!) Anyway, were they possum babies (no), were they wombat babies (no), were they mice/rat (no), were they echidna (no), was it a puppy – this was the closest we could come until it dawned on me to google what a newborn rabbit looked like. Well, yes they are newborn rabbits! We had contacted WIRES which turned out to be our next door neighbours to help us figure out what they were as the vet was closed. They won’t take them because they are rabbits. We don’t have the heart to kill them, so we are looking after them. Luckily we had a big bag of milk powder for our poddy calf that suits them that you just need to add a bit of thickened cream. They are still alive – we don’t know whether they will survive and they are so ridiculously cute. I know their odds aren’t good, but we have to try!

    Have a good day!

Oh and if you do google newborn rabbit, they look exactly like the first image, which looks nothing like a rabbit! Well, until you figure out they are a rabbit and then it’s pretty obvious. They even have tiny teeth!

    ETJ
I think that the animals in the first picture look like miniature hyppopotamus. Don’t you think so ?

Did I ever say how I like following your daily adventures !!!

Day 8 Minnesota, USA NFD 9:35 pm
A quick check in before it’s too late. I’d like to liquid fast tomorrow with everyone, but I may not be able to until Wednesday. I will be spending some special “Grandma” time with my 4 and 1/2 year old granddaughter, who has decided she no longer wants her new baby sister. 😟 She likes to share her food with me, so I will eat with her if it will make her day better. I’ll be cheering everyone else on toward a successful FD! Good luck!

    Chimpmunk13

One trick is to stop buying and bringing home all foods that are ” dangerous ” for you.

Another one, that I experienced myself, is to throw in the garbage whatever you are eating when you réalise that you should not be eating it.
My story : I decided to eat one spoonfull of peanut butter. Then, the evil eating troll made me take another one then another one, etc…. Untill I ate about 1/3 of the big jar ! I was discouraged and hated myself. I wrote my experience on this blog and someone suggested to throw my jar away. I thought it was a great idea but was still afraid I would go on eating even more. So I threw liquid diswashing soap in the peanut butter. That way, I was safe and thankfull that someone helped me just when I needed the most.

One of the good things with our international group is that there is almost always someone, somewhere in the earth ready to help us, day and night.

If you are on the job, get up, go to the washroom or walk a few minutes. It could help change your mindset.

    Good luck and stay strong.

    US Day 8- NFD

I have never been more thankful for a fast than i am for tomorrow. Fresh start!

Quebecoise – They look exactly like a hippo!! You can see why we automatically didn’t think rabbit! lol. Their eyes are closed and their ears are closed and look stuck to their head and aren’t very long. They have a little stump tail and the cutest little whiskers and tiny, tiny teeth. So cute. They are very active, wriggling around. Have had 3 feeds now since yesterday. Fingers crossed.
So funny about you with the peanut butter. Did you see that Sex and The City episode with Miranda and the cake? She did the same with the dishwashing liquid after eating it after getting it out of the bin, lol.

    Day 8 Sussex, U.K
I am also in for a fast day today. Going to try for the 36 hours which will take me to lunchtime Tuesday. I had too much of a good time yesterday which I could not seem to control and even when could not be hungry, could not sleep and had a bowl of cereal before midnight!
Will not beat myself up. It has often happened like this. Friends bring cake or daughter bakes it and I feel I am being churlish by saying oooh I can’t have that. The sugar demon then attacks and I am lost. I have about 40 lbs to get rid of and I must do it.
Fuvvie – what an inspiration you are.
ETJ- I love reading your posts.
Chipmunk 13 – Don’t be embarrassed. You are here. Dump those feelings. We have ALL been there and got the tee shirt! Onwards and downwards towards maintenance.
Québécoise – I so relate to the peanut butter episode. I wonder if I could find it on YouTube? You really made me laugh and lighten up.
Here’s to a great Monday fasting. I am ready for it. Good luck everyone.

    Italy Day 8 – FD

Stopped eating after dinner last night, about to go out for a long walk (about 7km) before it gets really hot – itsa quiet cloudy this morning but the Sun will BURN through soon.
Should be going to a barbecue tonight but might not go, i’m pretty sure i can resist the food but not so sure about the drink😥
Chipmunk – when i feel the eating troll is on its way, i go brush my teeth – a bit of mouthwash helps to…i never enjoy eating when i’ve still got that fresh zingy taste in my mouth!
Fuvvie try a back to back, even if you don’t make it try not to go over 500cals and its still another FD under your belt. It sounds like you’ll smash this 6lbs!

UK day 7 FD today , feel motivated and although this part of the challenge has been a struggle for me I want to end on a high ,good luck everyone on our last week , Coda you can have a well earned rest , looking forward to hearing what the next phase is

    Day 7 Cornwall UK.
wow what a thread this is Just makes me feel all warm inside, the support and motivation everyone is giving each other, so that we can all meet our mini and long term goals!
Queb – so pleased all went well and the families came together so well. What a lovely tbing to meet up with old friends – such a joy! Try to keep in touch with them!
Brightonbell – great to be in smaller clothes! I’m out to lunch today and it is HOT the only suitable dress I have is a 16 so the sewing machine is getting another airing to take it into a 12, which I am now!!! Ive been doing roll-ups since starting this challange to try and firm the abs flab – do you do pilates roll-ups?
Hannahwatto – We’ve all been there, get back on that bl…y horse, you can do this! Good luck on the 36 water fast! You have great support here.
Queb – well done for being so strong! I remember your peanut butter saga from the first challange, made me chuckle again!
B2B, chipmonk – stay strong, we’re in this together! Such good help and advice already given!

Yesterday was a non fast day, we decided to pack a picnic and head off on our bikes, visiting m-in-l on the way, which she really enjoyed today. We headed round the coast to Mousehole had our picnic then decided to go to Lamorna, all this in 25deg! A very hilly ride down all the little lanes, so beautiful and quiet. I now have a mile counter on my bike which reg 22.5miles on our return!! This is the longest one I’ve done for years and such a personal achievement getting up some of those hills!!

So out to lunch today and thinking I’ll try a 36hr fluids fast from after lunch to Wed morning! I can but try joining this elite 36 team!!

Fuvvie and Holly think we’re doing well to achieve our 6lbs loss, but if we don’t quite make it, we sure are winners!

Must get that sewing machine out!! Go for it all you fab people!!

So enjoying the olimpics!! Team GB doing so well, made it it really exciting!

Day 7: Gloucestershire, Cotswolds, UK: Fast Day.

Today we are heading home after being on our travels for the last 2 and a half weeks!

Today Im fasting so Im going to join Team36!

Its going to be hard as Ive not done a fast day for 3 weeks but I really need it to do a reset and get back to normal!

So liquids it is today…..bring it on!!!

    Kay

Back in from my walk and the morning has pretty much gone, i wanted to mow the lawns today and had a few other little projects lined up. Keeping busy on Fast days is always saver, i notice a lot of you do it.

So jealous Rocy65, i love Mousehole, such a great bike ride too. I’m sure that’ll keep you feeling great and get you closer to your goals

Before i get busy, big glass of cold sparkling water and a catch up on the olympics . Just have to see Usain !

Sorry for mistakes Brightonbell – should be Pilates Curl-ups and oblique
curl- up really good for the abs!!
best of luck you 36 team!! Stay strong!!

    Hey Kay65, welcome on board!

Surrey UK…day 7 Checking in for today, it’s really really hot! I wish I could remember who said what, most of it is so useful and helpful…how do you all do it? Do you make notes while reading the posts? Just thinking about that now, duh…..
I went out early with the dogs, and am definitely not going out in this heat again today. Had enough of it in Africa. I will fast tomorrow, and then again on Friday I hope. Have a great day wherever you are!

24 hours into my usual Monday water fast and its going well. Went to work, come home, cook dinner for the family. (Wife is not well at the moment.) Youngest wants to go play pokemon-go so off we go hunting for pokemon in the neighbourhood. 4km walk and we catch about 6 pokemon.

Take my bloods. Blood glucose 4.7mmol/L, ketones 0.7mmol/L. Looking forward to my yogurt and berries tomorrow for breakfast. Have been doing water fasts for 10 months now. I noticed a distinct difference after about 7 months. Its now very easy and I no longer get a numbness in my lower back which I put down to detoxing my liver and kidneys. Been in maintenance mode since March and doing 6:1 water fast.

Good luck with it guys. It works!!

Hi UK August 15th Day 7

Bigbooty – feeling privileged a seasoned 5:2 er like yourself has joined us – especially as you are only one of 2 males I believe on our challenge lol. How often do you do water fasts – do you do them as your 2 fast days or more often?

I’m staying strong Ciren2 – I do believe they are getting easier – or maybe I don’t think about them so much now.

    Gozo, Malta

Good luck 36 water fast buddies.

Yesterday was a successful fast day and tried on a dress which I ordered but came too big and I have to get someone to take a few inches away from the sides of it to fit me properly.

Today is a fast day too and then I’ll fast Friday only this week. Tomorrow I’ll weigh myself and see how much progress I made.

This morning went to have a drink at a nearby seaside resort with my younger daughters and grandchildren.

Take care everyone. Have a great Monday.

About to go to bed, but have done the back to back liquid only. I didn’t get hungry at all today. My daughter is concerned that I’m not eating enough and maybe she is right. Still such a long way to go though. So am making the most of all this enthusiasm. Team 36 sounds very cool. Come tomorrow morning I’ll have done 72 hours of liquids. Never would have believed it, but such is peer support and group dynamics.
I have to check what I weighed at the beginning of the 3 weeks, Rocy65, but I’m pretty sure I’ve shed the 6 pounds.

    Croatia, Day 7, NFD
    Weight: 79.1 Kg

Australia Day 6 NFD – an early check in as I have to fly to my brother again early tomorrow and try and get him in a treatment centre. He is an alcoholic and suffers anxiety attacks and depression so it is going to be tough. He went quiet on me today and even though he told another sister he was fine I just knew he was in trouble and his ex wife confirmed it tonight so off I go. It is nearly midnight here so have been on liquid-only for well over 24 hours and am confident I’ll make the 36.

    Hi Coda,

Almost from the get go I chose to do water fasts twice per week. Just found them easier than trying to eat 1/4 TDEE. Not advocating others do this, I just found it easier. Since March however I have been doing one water fast per week. Hit my goal weight so I didn’t really want to lose any more weight but wanted to maintain all the benefits of fasting. The longer you do this the easier it gets. I also found that I was naturally choosing better food options without really trying. My food portion size has also gone down. Hang tough guys, it does get easier.

Day 8 Los Angeles. FD. Working on catching up with the posts — my, we are a chatty group (in a very good way). I’m keeping on track with what goes in, but still dealing with the annoying yo-yo affect. Hopefully I’ll be on the low yo- on the last weigh-in day 😉

Day 7 USA (Utah – traveling)

FD today, well into the 36 hour liquid only challenge. My Aussie friend who told me about this whole fast diet isn’t so convinced the 36 hour is a good idea. We were just chatting, and he wondered where this idea came from. “Your blog group?” he said. Can anyone tell me where or who started this 36 hour idea?

Ciren2 i got to be honest…i broke my fast. My little girl wanted a pizza for lunch and when i was cutting it up i just popped a piece in …complete automatic pilot 😥. I can’t believe i did it. I haven’t had anything else to eat and hoped i haven’t sabotaged my efforts.

Hope the rest of you are sailing through it
Hannahwatto so sorry about your brother, he is very lucky to have you on his side.
Fuvvie you’re incredible 72 Hours! I just hope i can do you and Rocy65 justice

    Day 7, Québec

36 hours water fasting today and everything is just fine untill now, noon, lunch time. I’ m drinking sparkling water, in fact a club soda. I enjoy the little bubbles in it.

I feel confident that I can do this. Quite far today from my peanut butter struggle. It is in fact getting easier over time. The group is lifting me up !

Rocy65, Patti67 and ETJ I am pleased to learn that my saga with the peanut butter jar made you laugh. I did not see the episode of Sex in the City. If ever you find the link, could you please share it ?

ETJ, please keep us informed about you baby hippos ! They were lucky that your dog and your cat didn’t eat them there and then. Did you name the young ones ? It would be cool if you could find a mother rabbit ( or any female animal still feeding her babies ). We often see on Internet that she adopts the other babies and take care of them like her own.

Have a great day ! Bonne journée x

(I think it’s) Day 7: Pacific NW USA (traveling, going home today) liquid only FD

SongBirdMe: Dr. Mosley actually recounts several different fasting modes with reported health benefits, several of which he experimented with himself which even included a 4 day liquid only fast. You can read about the health benefits on this web site and in his books.

When he wrote his book he thought a do-able “fast” for most people could be modified by just eating less 2 days a week. He suggested 1/4 TDEE which for the average female was 500 cal and 600 for men, done on 2 non-consequitive days per week. When you take his advise you are eating those restricted 500/600 cal in a 36 hour window. Example: you have a NFD on Sunday and stop eating at 7:00 PM. You go to bed and on Monday you only eat 500/600 cal all day then go to bed and wake up on Tuesday and have breakfast at 7:00 AM – that’s where the 36 hours comes from.

Some of us have found that eating 500 cal on a FD just wakes up but doesn’t satisfy the hunger troll and find it easier to leave him sleeping on a FD by consuming only liquids. For myself, after I’ve fasted for 36 hours it’s often easier the second day and so several times I’ve had back-to-back fasts lasting 48 hours (Fuvvie’s gone longer).

Dr. Fung has also documented research about the health benefits of periodic liquid only fasting in his book and on his web site including weight loss and the accompanying improved blood sugars, organ health and disease prevention. Liquid only fasts are the standard in much of the research but if a person eats just 500/600 cal in a 36 hour window 2 days a week Dr. Mosley and many people on this thread and this web site find the same health benefits are also possible.

Long winded and simplified answer but, SongBirdMe, I think your friend need not think we’ve invented this on “your blog”.

Hi Songbird – I think the 36 hour fasting is what you would do normally if you didn’t break your fast with a 1/4 TDEE (500 cals or below). M Mosley added the small amount of calories in case people couldn’t face the prospect of nothing. It usually is a big thing for people to have to reduce their intake to just 500 or less but after trying 5:2 for a while and gaining in confidence – I know I am not going to keel over I gave it a go. I have found since trying just liquids it to be easier as I don’t have to count anything.

I also found since doing liquids only it seems to disperse any cravings and I use it now it reset my resolve – maybe because you are lowering your insulin further than if you raised it again after the small meal.

I also like to think that because I am eating well in between my fasts it keeps my body on it’s toes and hopefully is resetting my body set weight which means it will keep shedding the weight rather than want to start to regain and slow my metabolism. I also like to think that as it has no food to digest it’s attention can be directed to other areas – looking after other organs in my body. The body is an amazing piece of kit!

Fasting can be done for different lengths – although I don’t know when your body starts to slow the metabolism down and it thinks – hey where is the food I need? I also don’t know if I would want to do more than 36 – 40 – I don’t have any other major health issues that I would feel the need for it – others do. It is what you are comfortable with – what may work for one may not be to others cup of tea.

lol Hollylj – easily done ha ha it comes as a bit of a shock when you do it doesn’t it? I think one bit is forgiven or was it a whole slice you popped in?

Day 7 update….now back home in Dorset

Have managed on fluids today…..sugar free squash, black coffee and water.

I had my dinner late last night, at 9pm, with a glass of wine finished about 10pm, so I wont eat until midday tomorrow, to make sure I complete the full 36 hours.

Hope the rest of you are still being strong!
And for those not doing the 36 hour liquid fast, I hope you are also doing well and the day is going well for you.

Im keen to have a look at the scales in the morning, now Im home, to see where I am compared to where I was on 28th July when I went on my road trip. I had a peak earlier when I got home and I dont think Ive put on much after all, which would be fab as I can use this week to drop a couple of extra pounds, rather than take off what I’d gained on holiday…lol
    🙂

36-hour club mostly doing well I see. Keep it up. Once you go to bed it’s all over, right? Just a lovely Tuesday breakfast to look forward to.
HollyLJ: Sorry you didn’t quite make it this time….it IS hard, I know. You’ll do it another day, trust me.
Regarding eating 500 calories on a fasting day…I find doing that tempts me to carry on beyond….so I feel safer sticking with water-only. All or nothing, that’s me.
    Good luck team.

Well done Fuvvie you are awesome! you’ll end up being an 8lb’er in a league of your own!!
I was really careful at Lunch as food was plated up I had no choice, but to leave the potatoes and take the pastry off the quiche so did well really! But did have very small amount of chocolate mousse! All went awry this evening as OH surprised me with pizza! I succumbed to a small piece with a big salad.
So a fast day tomorrow and another bike ride, just making the most of this gorgeous weather!
I thought I’d have my cholestrol level and Rheumatoid/ inflamtaion bloods done.(a regular test twice a year) But my Doc called and after telling him I’m on 5.2 lost well over 1st and feeling really well he said he saw no reason to do a test! He was very impressed and gave me a gold star for taking control! I call him Dr Fit because he really is!

All the information about 36hr water fast makes a lot of sense so I am going to do that, I know OhH wont be keen (he is such a FEEDER, always tempting/ rewarding with food!! I have to be SO strong at times!!!

    Good luck all!

Coda and Back2theFuture – thanks for your explanation and ideas about the 36 hour fast. I will pass this along to my skeptical friend! 🙂

I’m doing fine, and as you said, Ciren2, once we make it to sleep it’s all down hill from there!

    Team36 update

Just after 10pm and will be off to bed shortly as tired.

Achieved the fluids only today fairly easily….just the one point earlier on when my partner had his tea.

Im going to hold out as long as I can tomorrow before breaking the fast to give my body a real good rest and recover.

Heres to our final 6 days!!

Sunshine Coast Aus Day 6: I owe everyone a big apology. It’s only 60 hours, not 72. I just doubled 36 but of course it is only 36 +24. What an eejit. Still, my first successful back to back liquid fast and feeling very chuffed. 104.0 kgs on the scale this morning . Of course it will go up but after slowing down a lot through the previous 6 weeks, this is the jolt I needed. Thank you, thank you, thank you Coda and this whole thread. The fairy godmother tapped me with her wand the day I fell into the 5:2 forum and this thread, but several other fantastic inspirational threads like Buttonboots and Lolly and Coldpizza and ETJ. Inspirational. Keep on keeping on everyone.
NorrieB, I’m with you. I did take notes one day. But it took me twice as long to write. I enjoy everyone’s entries. This is my favourite “book”. I can spend hours reading this thread and others. Sometimes I gate crash and write something, sometimes I read very inspirational stories from the beginning again. There’s so much wisdom to be found and reassurance that all is well with this WOL. Go faster a and non-fasters 💃🏻👍🎶🍾😘🐎. Yes, just a touch of mania this morning. Have to take the boys to school. Better get a move on.

    Ireland day 7 nfd
What started as a fast day ended up a disaster…nothing went to plan at all and feel sick having eaten food that I’m just not used to anymore…looking forward to a fresh start tomorrow…can’t wait

Where has our Slimnhealthy gone? Nothing on any thread since 11th August??? Hope all is ok?

Extra post – well have completed my 36 hour, liquid only fast. Thank you for the inspiration Ciren. Am not going to spoil it by overeating today – I will break my fast with an apple and have a Snack later of celery and carrot sticks. After that I will be dealing with my brother so who knows what is in store but will do will everything I can to stay within my TDEE.
Thank you for the support Holly, much appreciated.
    Well done fasters!

    PLEASE

Someone knows if it’s OK to take fruit juice while doing my 36 hour liquid only fasting ????

It’s 7 : 15 pm and holding on but my sister says I should drink juice.

    Thank you.
