  • Day 15: Gloucestershire, UK: Another FD turned NFD.
I lasted til 3.30 this time! I was about 21 hours since I last ate though.
I wish I could do a PROPER fast-day, even so.

Day 14, NFD, Day 15 FD, East Coast USA
So far so good today. Lots of us experienced a #cabinfeveragain day due to blizzards all over the country, and albeit the wonderful Shakespearean inspirational quote in one of these posts, I picked mindlessly all day. Picking is my downfall. Tough habit to break. But got my resolve back sweating it out in am hot yoga class. Scale stays the same, regardless.

JoJo: you turned me on to Kefir. I am all about gut health already — have autoimmune issues that I cured myself by healthy eating and exercise on my own. Western medicine is clueless about healing oneself with food, so I got my GoogleMD and researched gut health myself — Kombucha, Kraut and Kimchi (my DH calls them the 3ks) have been a mainstay in my shopping cart for my daily eating in addition to a probiotic supplement and bone broth, but now you got me into Kefir, which is another K! (meant to be) I actually crave it. I’m not big on dairy (beforementioned gut issues) but this is superfood dairy, so I make an exception. I even ordered Kefir grains, but I admittedly failed at making my own, so I buy it each week and have a cuppa day Thank you for suggestion. All of you skeptics out there should give it a try. AND, the rich and thick consistency fills you up, which is a added benefit. Your face will glow, indeed.

Next FD is Friday. Getting used to the MWF FD; just need to work on keeping the control the NFDs and SITTING DOWN to meals, rather than grazing. Ditching the extra sugar seems to help with that.

    Day 16 – NZ – NFD

    Day 15 uk

All went a bit haywirw today so didn’t fast.

I did however do an 8 mile bike ride then spent the day weeding and digging the garden. It has been such a beautiful day. Back is sore this evening!!

Day 15 Placentia CA. NFD. My weight hasn’t really changed. Up a lb down a lb. Very disappointing.

@at – Thank you for the spreadsheet link.

Day 15 – SW WA USA – FD

I think I posted before I left for school but am not sure.
Daylight Saving time may be playing some havoc with me. I’m a little tired and to be honest, a little grouchy. I’m not usually a grouchy person. Today I stopped working with one child because I was done. I needed a change.

SongBirdMe – congrats on your 1 yr 5:2 anniversary!

Nella Jimenez – yes, a normal weight loss is 1 to 2 pounds a week after the initial loss. I remember it was hard for me to figure out a realistic expectation for loss as I joined these challenges back in November. Someone let me know what was typical & that helped.

    Day 15, Gozo, Malta, NFD

I hope to fit in a fast day this week as ii badly need to fast and lose the extra two kilos I’ve gained.

Good night everyone. Onwards and downwards.

    second post – a question

I’ve been reading a lot in the other threads, and I’ve read that the whole “point” of the 5:2 is that, twice a week, you limit total caloric intake to 500 or 600 cal, or 1/4 of your TDEE. And when you do those fast days, that it really doesn’t matter “when” you get those calories, just that you limit your caloric intake for that 24 hour period. So, a light breakfast and a dinner, or one big meal, or light lunch and light dinner, etc.

But I keep seeing where people talk about fasting, and trying not to break those fasts. Going longer without eating. And then I see the study where during the fasts, it didn’t matter *when* people ate, as long as the caloric level was reduced to 500/600 for that day.

So, which is it? Or are people working past that initial weight loss and trying for full fasts or longer fasts on those days just because they enjoy it and the benefits?

    Day 15 – USA, PA – FD

I had a rough night last night my DH (darling husband) had ice storm duty over night… He was helping to get repaired the huge amount of power lines that had been knocked down by ice storm, leaving tens of thousands of people without power and without heat. I couldn’t go to sleep until 3:00 AM. I used the time to research herbs and such for sleeping. Rooibos tea is one I found haven’t used it yet. This morning I got up and saw the full cup of lemon 🍋 water and stevia sitting on the table next to my bed!?! I must’ve been so worried about ice storm and DH that I thought I drank it when I didn’t. I won’t make that mistake tonight! He’s got 2 more nights of ice storm duty. He’s more of a negotiator to get services to people who need them which isn’t dangerous but he drives through the ice and unexpectedly had to stay up all night until 8:00 AM this morning. The 2nd and 3rd nights will be better. 😊

🌈✨There is light after the storm.

☀️Still on for my 2nd FD in a row. If all goes well going for 3 tomorrow.☀️

Probiotics helping so much with gut and stopping hunger pains!!

    ✨We can do this!✨So let’s Do this!✨

@coda heading to Castlewellan Forest Park. St Patrick’s day looks very wet, as does the rest of the weekend, but I won’t melt! Living here means you have to be made of hardy stuff as you well know! Waterproofs and walking boots packed! The other highlight of this weekend is the England/Ireland rugby. Despite being English born, I’ve lived in NI for most of my life and my alliegance lies with Ireland. Even though they can’t win the championship, it will be some match.

    Day 16 – Queensland, Australia – NFD.

I will post my weight tomorrow (Friday). Good luck to everyone fasting today!

    2nd Post

Just over 500 on my FD today. Will have a NFD tomorrow and a FD on Friday. This will be my first 4:3 week. I don’t think I could ever do B2B so in awe of those of you who can, well done all!

    Day 14 FD🎉
    DAY 15 FD🤞- USA, PA
    DAY 16 FD 🤞

    ✨✨Keep on Keepin’ on!
@debster251 ✨Thanks for having me in your Pocket☀️Your post brightened my day!

✨I’m working on my B2B2B2B. The first fast day the body burns all the carbs, the second fast day a combination of fat and the third day body burns fat and protein laying around in the body such as viruses, bacteria and other distressful proteins if they exist. I haven’t found that it burns muscle tissue.

I did a B2B2B2B earlier this year and it had lessened my asthma. Reduced pain from Lyme disease. Reduced Pleurisy, Soothed acid reflux. Lost some weight. Smaller waist size.✨😊✨All Good! It’s worth it!

I’ve got you in my Pocket Pocketeers!!! ✨☀️Together we are stronger!☀️✨

@okeydokey Valerian and Passiflora are good herbs to help you sleep. I hope the storm blows itself out soon, keep safe.

    Day 15 – USA – FD (Now a NFD)

My excellent fast day turned into a NFD at around 3:30 after food shopping…my DH, who forgot it was my fast day, popped a pizza in the oven upon our arrival home that has never been stocked in our small town supermarket before…real pizza, Chinese and Italian food is sorely lacking in our area….soooooo…760 calories later, I’m over my FD calories (not including almost 200 for breakfast), but man, it was awesome! That’s what I love about this WOL…God willing, I will fast Thursday! I know He probably is, lol.

    Day 16/NFD/Aus

@gopackgo Everone chooses a different method to suit their individual pathway to health or weightloss. The basic 5:2 is as you say, 2 fast days eating up to 500/600 calories. Calories can be eaten throughout the day. I lost 42 lbs doing the basic 5:2 averaging a 1 pound loss per week. I’ve been under goal weight of 59kg since July 2015. I haven’t needed to tweak to achieve. I was very happy with the steady downward trend and never felt the need to speed it up. My current weight is 55.5kg. 5:2 is very sustainable. As @jojo said don’t put too much pressure on yourself. A pound a week is realistic.

@songbirdme Happy one year anniversary of 5:2 today! Your story could be mine. I’m 65 and thought I’d never lose the extra baggage I’d been carrying. Maintainance can be a challenge. I’ve certainly battled some demons but have managed to pull back and jump back onto the 5:2 wagon. I love the flexibility of 5:2 and knowing I can eat the foods I love. I follow a mediterranean style of eating with a focus on maintaining health as I age.

Yesterday was carb day. I’m not a fan of eliminating any food group but can understand why others do. Carbs suit my body. I enjoyed whole grain sourdough toast with sliced tomatoes for lunch folllowed by a bowl of pasta with peas, leek, roast chicken, cream (a rarity in my diet) and a good glug of olive oil followed by a small serve of full fat greek yoghurt. Leeks and reheated pasta are great prebiotics. All measured and under my ‘maintainance TDEE of 1700 calories’ according to the Mayo clinic calculator and not the paltry 1243 calories on the tracker here. The only time I count calories is on fast days and carb days.

    Cheerio

    Day 15 Massachusetts USA NFD

    @LinzM great job!

    Anonymous

    Day 15 – NL- NFD 68.2 kg

    Day 16/NFD/ Aus

My lengthy post disappeared??? No time to update. Should have followed my own advice – copy as you write 😳

@gopackgo ✨Thank-you so much for the links! Caramel sounds great. Do you drink the caramel tea at night?
@suse13 ✨Thank-you for the information. Do you take that yourself or are you naturally able to sleep!

I had Broken my leg last May. Still have physical therapy and still poor range of movement in leg because of a cracked Tibia. That’s probably why I’m such a FD fanatic. I used to be an aerobics instructor and now my leg isn’t able to handle taking aerobics. Loosing weight as fast as possible also prevents the pain my leg experiences from holding up a heavy body. So I’m more motivated than most to loose the weight when I can’t do the excercise as much. I am so impressed by So many doing so much more walking, Running, than I can do at this point.

    Day 15 / Sweden / NFD

Day went well. Under my TDEE. Looking forward to tomorrow’s FD.

    Take care.

    Still Day 15

Onehealthyhigh – I saw your longer post just a couple above your short one. Thank you for sharing your journey & insights.

@okeydokey I’ve taken both myself but passiflora works better for me. Valerian sometimes leaves me feeling ‘heady’ the next day, but this isn’t the case for everyone.

    Day 15 – 3rd post☀️
@lynzm I know what you mean, I like having my weekends w/o FD’s if I can. Last weekend were FD’s for me. Very difficult. I look to save good eating times for the weekend with my DH (darling husband.) It keeps me going during the week on FD’s
These are my days. I’m not sure what you call it. So far it looks like ✨10 FD: 6 NFD✨ That’s probably an unusual way to communicate it. I don’t have a simple way to communicate it as of now. @at or somebody who has been here longer than I have would know what to call it. After I get a few more weeks in. I’ll be know how to write it out better.

✨@at I’ve been wondering when we see something like 5:1 does the 5 mean NFD and the 1 mean FD? Or is it the other way around?

    Day 15 : Cheshire, UK : FD

So today turned into a FD coming just under 500 cals. I liked the feeling this morning of feeling light but that isn’t sustainable….fasting every day….haha.

I have a few posts to catch up on but I’m a bit too tired tonight. I think I used a lot of energy engaging my will to do the liquid fasts. I do want to eventually do a week long fast, not to lose weight, but for the health benefits. I can feel my body healing and resetting itself. It is a gradual process and I will keep trying.

I’m not sure what tomorrow will be….I will see how I feel in the morning. I love that I didn’t want to ‘pollute’ my body after the liquid fast days so I will definitely try again and see how long I can go.

@johnnyr – really want your feedback on this mate 🙂

@fuvvie – where are you? I miss you. I’m holding out my hand to you. Hope you are well. Hugs xo ps I haven’t caught up with all the posts so if you have posted today….I still miss you 🙂

    Take care everyone!

@annemarilyn. Thank you I’m glad you read it but it is no longer there nor on my replies generated in my profile. I know what I did wrong. I edited it to acknowledge other posts and must have failed to click post again thus sending it into the ether! Lesson learned.

4th Post FD – USA, PA

@at The first Nmbr being NFD and 2nd Nmbr being FD. It looks like I’ve been doing a 3:4 weekly. Is that what I should call it?

    Tomorrow’s post:

    Day 16 / UK / NFD

Thanks, @at, for the encouragement! I might risk a peek of the scales tomorrow. Just too curious.

Cannot say I’ve had much of a CD… market day today with lots of foodie stalls and I replaced lunch and most of dinner with two cheesecake swirl brownies, yummmy with three m! But not too fussed about it, if anything it alleviates my sister’s worries that I control my diet too much doing 5:2… I think the two words “control” and “diet,” especially when said against the backdrop of something as dramatic as a breakup, smell too much like eating disorder (or on the way to one) for her. And fair enough, I honestly don’t think that’s the case although I am a bit obsessed with it as long as it is working, and it’s good to be mindful of it.

@onahealthyhigh I’ve lost 3 posts like that, I thought it had something to do with editing adding more responses to others, that I wanted to get in. Thank-you for clarifying that. What your saying makes sense, I must’ve forgotten to push Post again.

Hi @ciren2 please correct me if I am wrong. I assume you stopped eating on Tuesday after dinner, you fasted overnight and continued until you came home from work today about 3.30pm, correct? – if you have one meal when you come home either 1/4 tdee or even up to your 500 calories and continue fasting from that meal until the next day when you decide when you want to break your fast or if you really wish and it suits you can do the exact same again a b2b. In my mind that is a success! Maybe not the complete fast you may have done before but still a fast that we all did at the beginning before we started experimenting. What are breaking your fast with? Could you not allow yourself a 500 or below for a few weeks to get you into the way of it again. I liken it to someone training for a run, they are training well and on target running 5 miles a day. Then disaster strikes and an injury means they can’t run for a few weeks. Once the injury heals they resume training. Now from what I gather and I could be wrong, sorry if I am and ignore my ramble but your idea is this person should training by doing what they were doing before, running 5 miles a day. Poor person he can’t make 5 like he used to. He made 2 but that’s not good enough so he tries again but still can’t make 5. Should he/she give up because they can’t do what they used to? Of course not! What this person should do is back track a bit. Re start his training by running a mile for a few days, when he can do that he runs a little further for another while until that feels good and then another bit further and build up again and guess what they are back running 5 miles a day. They are also listening to their body, maybe some days when they have run 3 miles that seems enough so they go easy on themselves and stop early but you know what, that is ok as well. I have said it before – I think you are too hard on yourself. Ease off a little and be kind.

    3rd post Day 15 – FD

Busy afternoon and evening – just updated spreadsheet and will try to answer a few posts – sorry if I missed anything important ……….

Today’s FD has been a bit of struggle – was fine until mid afternoon then really hard – kept drinking hot fluids and managed to cope until dinner tonight so came in around 400cal for the day.
I have an aerobic class tomorrow at 0900hrs – plan is to have a cup of tea on waking – go to the class then break my fast by having a light brunch out with OH and then nothing to eat until dinner out with DD for some mother and daughter bonding time – this will involve cocktails no doubt!!!!!!

@lindasue – you do a great job maintaining
@jojo58 – thanks for that information did not realise kefir had an effect on asthma
@songbirdme – Happy 1st anniversary – great job and stay strong with us and the “Ides of March” will ignore you!!!!!!!! xx
@gopackgo – I started 5:2 in Jan 2016 and only did my first water fast in November 2016 and I also tried my first B2B around that time as I had plateaued for some 3 or months and joining the November challenge here gave me the incentive to do what others had done on here. I achieved my goal weight in early December and have been maintaining since then, mostly below my target weight! There is strong evidence that fasting for longer period has long term health benefits that goes beyond losing weight.
@okeydokey – slow road back from these injuries but sounds like you are focused on your health – stay positive. I believe that if you do 4NFD and 3 FD a week then it’s a 4:3 week – does that answer your question?? THANKS for the encouragement – I have made it!!!!
@fuvvie – we have not heard from you for a few days now – as @coda and @goldensun said – you OK?
@ciren2 – 21hrs is not so bad and it sounds like you are having CD – just stick to it and it will happen!

My bed beckons – so goodnight from Cumbria to all our 31 Day March 2017 Challengers worldwide

I think there is a glitch when you edit as I definitely remembered to hit submit yet the post disappeared. Luckily I had copied

    Day 14, Oceanside CA, NFD
    Day 15, Oceanside CA, NFD
    Day 16, Oceanside CA, FD

Two easy NFD’s well within TDEE. It is amazing how much smaller my portions are getting. I’m just not ravenously hungry on the NFD’s. The breakfasts are the same with the protein waffle and fruit. The dinners are only different because the protein portion is a little larger, maybe 4 to 5 oz, and we eat a small sweet potato. Green vegetables include broccoli, Brussels sprouts and green beans. Green salad on fast days.

I continue to rack up the steps and miles with my Fitbit keeping me focused. For me the combination of the Fast 5:2 and walking 4 or 5 mile average per day keeps me healthy and losing. Less than 2 lbs from goal. It is probably good to have that little goal keeping me on track.

FD tomorrow. I like the Monday and Thursday rotation. Multiple fast days in a row and water fasts are not for me. Also nice to know that Dr. Mosely is offering the option of a couple hundred extra calories to keep fasters active.

Congrats @songbirdme!! I’m inspired, thank you.

    Day 16 Melbourne FD
@at I had been avoiding ‘the spreadsheet’ as I sit in front of spreadsheets all day… but I looked at it today and Yes! it is Awesome! It also showed me what a light month of FDs this is so far, for me. Not gaining, but not losing, which isn’t too bad, so I think April will be a more focused month for me to ditch a final kg or so and get fully working towards making this a more ‘unconscious’ WOL.

@onahealthyhigh – I have eaten close to a Mediterranean diet for many years, just with some added sugar, (that I’ve now virtually ditched except for super-special days) and too many snacks. I admire your WOE and I hope to get to the same place as you, over the next 12 months – ie an ingrained FD (or 2) per week and 16:8 Med diet the other days.

    Day 15 Florida, USA NFD
Kept to my TDEE of 1200 calories today. It wasn’t easy. I started to go astray midday but I righted myself. I use an App on my phone called Lose It to keep track of calorie count. It keeps me honest.

I am having trouble seeing more than 36 posts. I choose not to get the dozens of e-mails everyday. I hope I can figure this out to follow your posts/progress. Good Luck all.

Ciren2, what do you think keeps you from having a proper fast day? This is my second time on the 5/2 and I lost 16 pounds last time. Then I had major stress in my life and let my discipline slide. I now have only 9 pounds to lose. I always follow what Michael outlines in the book strictly because of all the meticulous research he did. I re-read parts of the book when I need to stay on track. Wishing you well.

GoPackGo, I see people deviate from the recommendations in the Fast Diet book, which is based on meticulous research. I myself have followed it as outlined in the book with excellent results, and it gets easier with time. Good Luck to you!

    *third post*

    3/15 WI, USA FD

I had a GREAT fast day! I had coffee with a bit of skim milk, stevia, and fiber in it, and didn’t eat until I was getting hungry (and needed to take a muscle relaxer, didn’t want to do that on an empty stomach).

So, I’m a total foodie. I LOVE food. It’s why every other “diet” hasn’t, and most likely won’t, work for me. I like to have homemade bread, and butter, and cocktails and wine and ribeye and a luscious pasta when I’m craving those things. I appreciate good food.

Well, for lunch, I had mixed spring greens topped with juicy, lightly flavored chicken, fresh strawberries, cucumer, goat cheese, and a beautiful fig balsamic vinegar. I know the author mentioned how food can taste so wonderful after a fast and OMG, that salad …. tasted so delicious! I loved, savored, and appreciated every bite and was fully satisfied, and that salad came in under 200 calories. Loved it. I do weigh everything by ounce to get accurate caloric counts for fast days.

Then I got a Starbucks iced coffee with no milk, no sweetener. Added a splash of skim milk and a splash of half and half, and stevia. Didn’t even finish it. Dinner was a really good soup I made with veggies seasoned with curry, and chicken broth. I came in under 500 calories for the day – about 440 or so – and I don’t feel hungry or deprived at all. Amazing. I’m going to have a cup of bedtime tea here and go to bed shortly. Third fast in two days and I can’t believe how good I feel! YAY!

@okeydokey, yes, I drink that tea – it’s what I’m going to drink shortly.

@moggie – thank you! For right now, at least, I’m sticking with the book guidelines. I totally understand branching out and deviating a bit later, but not right now!

@songbirdme – Congratulations on your anniversary! 🙂 I feel that maintenance is the hardest part. I reached my goal weight in 2016 and left this site and slowly put some of the weight back on. I’ve learnt my lesson 🙂

Day 15 NFD St Louis USA
I don’t know if I got this posted earlier or not. Sorry if it’s the second post.

I plan to fast tomorrow so would love being included on the pocket list.

Also when I was trying to post earlier and thought I hit submit, I may have actually hit report post. I was doing this on my phone and I wasn’t able to catch it. I guess someone will contact me about that and hopefully I can rectify it. So if you had a post that I reported, I didn’t do it on purpose. 🙁

    Day 16 – Tokyo, Japan – NFD 81.6kg

Weight has soared but it probably from working out hard and having a very salty treat yesterday. I actually seem a little trim today.

@gopackgo – Outside of like 5:2 circles and some ADF circles, eating 500 calories isn’t fasting. There is a large range of effects that happen with fasting and some of them are stopped by consuming even a few calories. However if you goal is just general weight loss, then eating 500 or 600 calories on your fast day probably isn’t a big deal.

I have two goals from fasting though which eating does interfere with:

    1) I’m trying to build more lean body mass while losing fat. That is very difficult to do. However fasting helps with the production of HGH which is something we don’t produce much of as we get older. HGH is so powerful that some people pay a lot to be injected with it, however there are lots of side effects with that approach. There are two main ways to increase the production of HGH. A) HIT or HIIT workouts that really stress and push one to the limit; and B) fasting without food. It literally only take a gram of protein or even less to shutdown HGH production. Even eating 30 calories of carbs and greatly impact it. However fasting for over a day can greatly increase the production of HGH and it happens in a balanced fashion that doesn’t have side effects.

    2) I’m trying to improve my insulin sensitivity. The idea that it doesn’t matter what you eat is mostly pushed by processed food manufactures and is simply flat wrong from a hormonal perspective. I’m pretty sure I could live on an extremely calorie restrictive diet and gain fat if I simply only eat processed foods. That is why there is so much discussion about low carb meals, etc.. If you don’t eat it isn’t an issue. Note the younger someone is in general the more flexibly they have with food choices.

As far as overall calories go, it probably doesn’t matter. I’m sure I eat more after a fast than if I would if I ate 600 calories on my fast day. However I’m trying to maximize the hormonal impacts. There are even more benefits to be gained from fasting but generally it requires longer food free fasts. I’m just not there yet.

So it really boils down to why you are fasting.

Here are other reasons I don’t eat while fasting:

    * When I eat my hunger increases. The longer I don’t eat the less hunger I have at least to a point. The exception is that when I do fast more than 2 days the second day is harder at least for a while.

    * Not eating frees up time. The hunger comes and goes but the time only goes.

    * Not eating tends to improve my attention span. (At least in my case)

    * Not eating is very cheap and allows my to upgrade me food choices on NFD. That is really a big deal to me! While I can afford to eat whatever I want, the 2 day discount seems to help me feel good about my choices.

    Day 16 Glasgow FD

Still can’t see my original post though two people have commented on it! Quite strange.

@gopackgo I followed the 5:2 as outlined in Dr Moseley’s book to lose 42 pounds. It took 10 months averaging 1 pound per week. Very sustainable. The 5:2 programme according to Dr Moseley, “is designed as a well-signposted path towards a longer, healthier life; weight loss is simply a happy adjunct to all of that.” I was in it for the health benefits, not weight loss acca @songbirdme. I never felt the need to tweak it although I always saved my calories for an evening meal hence my fast day consisted of 23 hours before eating up to 500 calories followed by another 12 hours before breaking fast with a milky coffee. This suited me but I’m sure you would have similar results eating the 500 calories throughout the day. Importantly I am no longer pre diabetic, my blood pressure has normalised, bad cholesterol is way down, hips and knees no longer ache and, best of all I can keep up with my 5 preschool aged grandchildren! I’m 65 and take no medications and have suffered no muscle wasting and have improved my metabolism. The only part of Dr Moseley’s plan I don’t do is eat pie! I’m very, very grateful for this WOL.

    Day 16, Germany, FD

@at I really was pleased when I saw I was below 59 kg. It’s amazing to see, how fast my weight is going down. Don’t know exactly what causes the rapid loss, apart from doing 5:2 and 16:8 I cut out sugar, I don’t miss it at all. We don’t eat processed food, always cook from scratch. We reduced portion sizes also. We also bought an excersice bike, a rowing machine and a cross-trainer. We’re trying to exercise 45 min. a day, we really like it. When I write it down, I see, we did change a lot. It’s working, we’re satisfied and happy with the results.

    Good fasting everyone!

    Day 16 Berkshire UK NFD

Well, I for one am dying to know about the 800 cals for FD. Have the feeling it would mean cutting down on NFD cals though. Hmm I am not weighing in until the end of the month.
