  • 2nd post – Day 13

Lovely yoga class this evening – nothing to eat since brunch this morning, not feeling hungry at all!!! The plan is to continue fasting on Tuesday and Wednesday as out on Thursday, Friday and Sunday nights this week!

Forum has been busy today – am going to try and catch up and update the spreadsheet……..sounds like a few of us struggled this weekend but you know what today is another day as is tomorrow – lots of the group doing a FD today to reset that button!!!! – I counted some 57 who have signed up to a FD today Monday 13th March – some have finished and are asleep – others are nearly there and some have a bit of the day to see through yet – TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER

@krisnia – you are so correct in that restaurant portions are huge – I never manage 3 courses any more – if I’m going out for a meal I don’t eat for the rest of the day and I go for two courses but don’t eat the potatoes and very rarely clear my plate anymore!
@Strawberriesandcream – Glascow is a great city for a weekend – very vibrant – I have friends living there and always enjoy a bit – nice to hear you had a great time
@metatauta – I find prunes very good and hot lemon water on waking every morning
@okeydokey – WOW what amazing results – 9lbs since the start of the challenge – bet you have not stopped smiling today – huge hugs and such a positive post
@fivetwofan5252 – hope you feel better tomorrow – early night with a hot toddy??
@saffy420 – it does help to be organised when doing FD – stay strong
@southcroydonkate and @pamie- I have added you on to a mini B2B FD group that seems to be springing up – we can hold hands across the globe
@schatziii – don’t get despondent – lots of us have found that sometimes there is no rhyme or reason as to how the weight comes off – just keep strong and follow the basics of 5:2 and at some stage the weight will start moving – “Even if you can’t physically see the results in front of you, every single effort is changing your body from the inside. NEVER GET DISCOURAGED”

Great to read the many supportive posts giving advice and support to anyone struggling – what a great family we are!
As requested here is the link to the spreadsheet:- https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kL93kkUot0oXrRu_9eVmWZIH2MXqlzsTYhylj4kZ43U/edit?usp=sharing

There seems to be a small group of B2B – Mon 13th and Tues 14th so I have started a list – anyone else doing please join in

AT, I was just looking at the magnificent spreadsheet again – Lord knows I couldn’t do it. Just wanted to note that all of my weight recordings would be in lbs (some are listed in kgs). I truly don’t care and don’t even know the difference – maybe kgs is better – haha… But, if you are totaling at the end or something, just a heads up.

    Again, great job !

    Day 11 Ireland NFD
    Day 12 NFD
    Day 13 NFD
Decided to switch my fast days to Tuesday and Thursday this week.
Have had a busy weekend so haven’t been able to catch up on posts, hope everyone is well!
    Tomorrow Tuesday FD.

    day 12, NFD/Day 13, FD USA
Erika45: great spelling of your name (I, too, a with a K, my name is German in origin from my German Dad). And I, too, blew control over the weekend … started off strong, then Sunday by afternoon, I started eating mindlessly. Perhaps I’ll try a FD on Sunday next week.
Easier FD today, knowing I went off yesterday. What was it that set me off? sugar. I have been so darn good avoiding sugar and feeling so much better, but after a few chocolate chips and an oatmeal cookie (granted 1) I got that spike or taste in my mouth and then went into a downward spiral. Note to self: I am a happier person without sugar. How many times must I write the same note to myself. Good luck all of you lovelies! I do feel like my mindset is back, so I am shifting into high gear now the next half of this challenge!!

    Tomorrow’s post:

    Day 14 / UK / FD

Let’s just say I didn’t spend my dinner cals on something reasonable on today’s NFD. At least I turned it from a late-afternoon snack into dinner by scratching the (albeit decidedly healthier) dinner plans. I’ll have the rest of that homemade chili tomorrow. No clue how many cals it has, but I’ll try to keep it to a small bowl and won’t worry about it too much.

This week I am aiming for proper 5:2 (the other FD being Friday). I am expecting the dreaded first plateau soon and want to have a step up to 4:3 up my sleeve in case I need it. It will also allow me to change to FD Mon/Wed/Fri from next week onwards without having to do FD B2B.

Weighing in on the weighing debate (too much? ok), checking the scales most mornings works for me at the moment, although I tend to record only what I like seeing. Even if I had a bad day before (or, my hunch is, the day before that actually), it keeps me on track.

I know once I’ll hit a plateau and won’t be able to explain a non-change or even gain by bending the rules before, I’ll get less interested in the scales, but hope that I will stick with 5:2 anyway (and as doable as I have been finding especially the FDs I do think I will). I have also started measuring bust/waist/hips but am much less keen on doing this daily, so I hope this would also keep a few surprises in store every so often (weekly, maybe even monthly).

Australia Day 14 NFD – completed my 36-hour, liquid-only fast and feeling good about the achievement. I have not had a chance to catch up on the overnight posts but over the weekend people were commenting on new guidance from Dr Moseley re how to do 5:2. Any key differences? I prefer to do liquid-only 36-hour fasts with black tea and coffee and plain miso soup. Any issues with my approach?

Day 13 FD. Placentia, Ca. USA
Sorry I’m such a looser! I haven’t checked in for a few days. I think I may have lost 1 ot 2 lbs. I didn’t have a great weekend though and gained 1 back. I find the FD pretty easy so far. I have to keep watching myself on the NFD’s so I don’t ruin it.

extra post – I just found the link to the Dr Mosley update on page 29, thank you @at, and I am more confused than ever. First we are told we can eat up to 25% of our TDEE on FDs which on average for women is around 500 calories, then we’re told that it is still better to totally fast – except for liquids – for 36 hours, and now we can have up to 800 calories and three meals on our fast day? What the? I thought the whole “science” behind this diet was that true fasting impacted insulin resistance and so enabled fat loss. What are we to believe now? And this sugar free 800 calorie per day diet sounds exactly like The Biggest Loser diet which everyone agrees is a failure. All I want is to lose weight safely and keep it off.

    Day 13 Wisconsin, USA FD

First Day, First Fast! I have to say, it wasn’t too awful. No crazy hunger pains, no hard-to-deny cravings. I had a headache for part of the day but I actually woke with one, so it really had nothing to do with the fasting. I tend to get headaches and migraines more often than not, so I’m actually curious if down the road, headaches will reduce with a healthier lifestyle.

I decided I wanted to fast a full 16 hours before eating, but then realized that I was stupid last night and ate some baked chips right before bed. So, to do a full 16 hours, I had to wait until 3:00 to finally eat something. Also, out of habit, I put fiber in my morning coffee (10 calories), and can someone tell me – when you do a FD, do you completely abstain from calories, or is that bit of fiber supplement OK?

I wanted to go to the gym this morning, but we had a snowstorm roll in, about 12 inches so far and still going, and the roads this morning sucked. I decided to stay in rather than head over to the gym. I will still get my 10,000 steps in today, though (I have a FitBit), I was pretty active with cleaning, shoveling, etc. I’m used to going to the gym right after dropping the kids off at school, with nothing but coffee in me, so exercising on an empty stomach isn’t new to me and actually preferable. I’m typically starving when I get home, though, so ….. We’ll see how that goes. LOL

3:30 meal was giant plate of spinach and greens, 3 ounces of herbed poached chicken breast, avocado, tomato, cucumber, cottage cheese. Drank a cup of chicken broth (15 cal) while getting the kids’ dinner ready. Dinner was another salad, mostly veggies, a bit of feta on it. I stayed right under 500 calories – yay! I did reserve 17 calories for this sleep stuff that I drink at night if I can’t get to sleep. I figured tonight I’d need it so I wouldn’t lay there thinking of food.

Very proud that I made panko-crusted baked chicken legs, alfredo pasta, and buttered corn for the kids and didn’t touch a BIT of it. You don’t really realize all the little nibbles and bites that you do until you are watching every bite on a fast day, do ya?

@songbirdme, thanks for the greeting! And congrats on your Cubbies winning this year! Die-hard Packers fan here (hence the name).

I feel so happy that I did well on this first day … I feel light, and accomplished, ,and healthy. I’ll need to remember this feeling when I have a day where I’m crabby and hormonal and want to eat everything in sight.

Yay for everyone that had a great day today!

Oh, and on the weighing thing. For myself, I weigh twice a week (Monday and Thursday mornings) and measure once a week (Mondays). I can’t do it daily or I’d get discouraged. I measure every week because even if the scale goes up, but measurements stay the same or go down, you know it’s just your body retaining or whatever. Feels better if the scale says you gained 3 pounds but you still lost another half inch in your hips. 🙂

    Day 13 Massachusetts USA FD

Have not been posting the last couple of days due to being busy. Still sticking to the 5:2. Not really looking forward to weigh in, in the morning due to not feeling like I have lost anything. While I stuck to the 5:2 concept I really ate more than I would have liked to on the non fast days. Guess I will know in the morning.

    Day 14 – Perth, W.Aust – FD

Looking forward to this reset day, feeling a bit out of sorts with my body. A combination of eating differently and not moving as usual due to hurting my back. Had a physio session yesterday afternoon and the back is feeling much better, but I think it will be a few days before I can get back to my normal exercise patterns.

Be strong, be kind, be fabulous.

I’m doing a FD tomorrow. I thought of doing it today but I feel like Mondays are hard enough? For me, the hardest part of 5:2 is that I agonize over which days to do it. Once I commit to it I’m fine; I have a rule, if I’m going to bail, I have to do it by 10am. Does anyone agonize over their fast days, or is it just me? I often find fast days liberating because I can’t snack mindlessly or eat my feelings. (Have to find something else to do with them, but what?) random fitness story: my friend was riding her horse and she had a step counter or a Fitbit, I’m not sure. But it counted her horses steps! But here’s the thing, it only counted the two steps so if it was counting her steps, she was cheating and they shouldn’t count but if they counted her horse’s steps, they were undercounted and he should have gotten double, right? Because he has 4 legs? Eh. It was funny but I guess you had to be there. Good luck everyone.

    Day 14 NFD NZ

I’m still reading the 800cal book and prepping mentally for the potential challenge.
I have decided that I will implement the Mediterranean diet component regardless which fits with the slower version of the blood sugar diet anyway while I’m leading up to it.

There will be some challenge to it as I’m lacto ova vegetarian so all the fish and chicken parts are not an option and he’s quite clear that protein is important to mitigate potential real starvation/wasting effects of continuous VLCD which means really careful planning to meet my macros.

Someone mentioned the long term VLCD and ‘starvation mode’ but it is well covered in the research that most of the concerns there are based on poorly done and flawed studies. The important part seems to be the duration of the restriction.

Day 14 – White day! Tokyo, Japan – NFD 79.4kg

I made it safely past the White day trap, my wife was sure I would forget. In Japan women give men chocolates on Valentines day, but the men are suppose to give Women something white and preferably expensive on March 14. It also happens to be pie day (Math pie)but most Japanese women don’t care about that.

I’m back on my fruit and my digestion is moving again. I guess my body has a little dependency on fruit.

To all the 3/13 fasters! Hang in there not far to go now!

3rd post Day 14 – USA, PA -FD

@gopackgo. ✨✨✨Welcome! Congratulations great FD. It’s the hardest for me when hubby and I are cooking dinner for the kids. I ordered some nose plugs. Smelling food can make me hungry 😋 on a FD.🤣
I drink warm lemon water with stevia before I go to bed. I wouldn’t mind mixing it up some nights. Do you mind sharing the name of the drink you have before bed that helps you sleep?

Also it looks like we’re supposed to get a snowstorm 19″ here on the east coast by tomorrow! Fun in the snow❄️😊

Day 14 NFD country West Australia
still without computer so using others when able!
Yesterday was a FD turned into a well-below-TDEE NFD so pretty pleased.
Weight still under 72 so also happy about that.
Out to dinner tonight and a horrible cold windy day today meant that the FD I planned has been postponed until tomorrow. Only had yoghurt, fruit, several coffees, 1 slice toast, soup, salad roll but already over 500 calories.
Trying to catch up on posts when I get to my DH’ s computer but alas not too often. Will get there eventually.
I, too, find that upping the FDs to 800 calories is interesting but perhaps it is still well below what a lot of people consume on a daily basis so still constitutes fasting .
Besides I like the feeling of giving my intestines a rest on FDs. If we can get more of the population to realise that we don’t have to feel full all the time it can only be a good thing.☺️

    DAY 14 – GERMANY – FD

    Day 14 UK NFD

@lorky35 i would find any indecision around which FDs unbearable. I generally do Mon & Thurs unless I know of a reason why one of those days has to be changed at the beginning of the week and then I make the decision early. I would find it really stressful not to have made the decision by the morning of a potential FD. I need to gear myself up for it psychologically. I feel the same about not completing a FD. If I allowed myself to do this once I fear I would be on a downward spiral and I would never be able to complete one again. That is just the way my head works. So far I have never bailed on a FD (started Sept 16). The regimented approach of sticking to the same days or changing well in advance if I need to and then never failing (sorry) to complete keeps me sane(ish).

@hannahwatto I do liquid fasts also for both days and try to do 16/8 but I am much more flexible with myself about this on NFDs. Like others I struggle on NFDs. I am really interested in hearing about any other approaches as slightly stuck on the last 16lbs. I wonder what the views are on whether LF are actually more effective, whether to stick in another FD (hard!) or even go to AD fasting. Would love to hear from anyone who has experimented and found a more effective way. As I am a bit stuck now wondering what maintenance will look like at 16lbs lower!

    Day 14 Glasgow FD

    DY 14 – Netherlands – NFD

    Day 14 UK FD 🌈

2nd day FD, doing two together suits me. Especially today as I always do a double shift so I’m busy and only have time for one meal @ lunch.

Best be good at the start of the month as I seem to have 3 dinners and an afternoon tea at the end of the month. Eeek!

@johnnyr would really like to know how you get on, have myself considered doing more Fasts in the week, not sure I could do 5 midweek Fasts. Tend to do Mon and Tue then try to add a further one later in the week. Would like to shift the weight quicker for a bit, until I reach nearer my goal.

    Thanks @at doing a fabulous job x

Day 14 UK NFD Very pleased with yesterday’s fast, almost tempted to do a b2b as I really don’t feel hungry this morning , but in the past I have caved in and then not been in the right frame of mind for a Wednesday fast so think I’ll go for a “good ” NFD.

Very interested about the kefir, think I’ll order some grains and give a go, I’ll try water first

Dykask – sorry the identity theft was unintentional

    Day 14, Switzerland, FD

    2nd post:

    @lorky35
Yes, I had that Sunday night and Monday morning. I went with the less scary option (NFD to avoid FD B2B), but even if I’ve gone to bed hungry I hardly ever wake up hungry, so in the morning I was thinking I could do it anyway. Then the thought of my beloved porridge established itself and… nah. Today though! I am set on it now and once I leave the house without it, I’m on the road to FD. NFDs aren’t worth it if I go without my breakfast!

    @johnnyr
I’m not considering it, but am interested in it too! It only took me about three years to give 5:2 a try. “Today I wish I had started three years ago.” (is that how the phrase goes? 😉 ).

@at thanks for ur heartwarming reply. I keep on to see what happens.I trust my effort.

    Day 14 Berkshire UK NFD

Had a good FD yesterday. So mindful of today. An old nightshirt I fished out last night now fits! I can cope with that!!

    DAY 14 – UK – NFD

No b2b for me as I have decided it doesn’t suit – ADF is better for me – and if I miss a day I’m still fasting at least two if not 3 days a week.

Headachey again after my fast (hence no b2b) and looking forward to eating 1300 cals to-day. (It always seems like a feast after a fast day.) Lost 10 0z. yesterday so v. please am now under 10stone barrier…long may it last.

Have to agree the new MM guidance is confusing. However, it might stop headaches and sleeplessness and encourage more peeps to give fasting a go and keep it up. I have decided experiment is the key, what suits one doesn’t suit another – I notice several people here do liquid fasts, which I could never do, but suits them well. Whatever rocks your boat improves your health and loses some weight is all that matters. 800
or 1/4 tdee or zero cals…..it doesn’t matter as long as you can sustain it and keep it as your WOL. Fit and healthy is the aim.

Good luck all fasters – especially those b2b’ers. xx

    DAY 14 – UK – NFD

    Day 14 UK NFD

I managed to finish the fast day yesterday so I am feeling a bit better about my ability to continue to stick to this. I really think I should stay away from the scales though. I didn’t have any for the first two months and there was so much less angst. My clothes showed me it was working quite clearly enough.

    2. post, could be this?

Day 14 Kent UK NFD -4lb goal this month.

I went out for dinner last night to an Italian, didn’t fancy salad so just had a large starter of Calamari with dip and a latte. Then we went to see ‘Hidden Figures’ which is an incredible film and very inspiring for black women. These strong women remind me how capable we are, against massive odds they succeeded in achieving their career goals in a white, male dominated world in a segregated state in America. They beat the odds stacked against them and changed history. We need to do the same, fight the sugar culture that will cause the same health problems for the next generation.

I try to live in the moment, I try to avoid looking back at weightloss journey or forward to long term goal. This reduces the need to measure failure and success against your own achievements. Just plan for today with a one pound per week goal. Realistically this means cutting 3,500 calories from you weekly intake. It’s enough for me to consider as I have been fasting years now. I don’t put any pressure on myself, doing the doable is the way to go. The easier the plan the more likely you are to succeed. It’s just a routine, like breathing and sleeping, stress free.

    Be kind to yourself!

As it’s a non fast day I will have a home made bowl of curried cauliflower soup and salmon salad for dinner. I will enjoy a glass of milk Kefir this morning and this evening before bed. I often have a glass of water Kefir after dinner. My immune system is a priority because it was weakened by long term use of antibiotics. It helps me feel great and lead a very energetic full life.

    Day 14, UK, NFD.
Yesterday’s FD went well and as I’m now back at work after a few months convalescence, I decided to eat during the day rather than leave it until evening. This worked and meant I came home and had a protein shake around 7pm which satisfied me.

Was going to do b2b FDs but I’ve prepped and worked out my food today so just want to see if I can stay within my TDEE as I’ve not been able to since last Wednesday. I’m not expecting anything this week and may even have a gain after my over eating but I know feel that I’m back in the right frame of mind so am hopeful I can shift some pounds by the end of a March.

    Happy Tuesday all.

    Day14 Hampshire. FD

    Day 14 Surrey UK NFD

Finished my FD yesterday on 501. Broke my fast after 17hrs with a light salad and wasn’t hungry for the rest of the day. Had a large tuna salad for supper with a couple of satsumas and I was stuffed! Feeling food right now.

Good luck everyone on a FD and everyone not on a FD!

    Day 14 Tas Australia NFD

Have been away for the long weekend here. I put a post up before I left, but looks like it didn’t go through.

    Days 10, 11, 12 and 13 were all nfd’s.
Was planning for a fd today but didn’t feel like it was the best choice for today as really tired and stressed and super busy. Not sure about tomorrow either but wanted to get back on here as it really helps me.

    Day 14 – Brittany, France – NFD

After yesterday’s FD, weight this morning: 67.2 kg

Not shifting any weight at all, just stabilising. It’s frustrating but it simply can’t be helped. I guess we are so used to having everything at once that when fairly strict food control doesn’t bring immediate results we are disappointed. I remind myself that it has taken me 12 years to go from 58 kg to 72 kg (my top whack), so why should I feel that I have to lose it all in a few months?

    Day 14 – Switzerland – NFD

Yuck, I hate ‘well-woman’ check-ups. I know they are for our general wellbeing, but I dislike them almost as much as mammograms (men on here, count yourselves lucky!). Anyway, had a good chat with Gynae about all things hormonal. Her advice was to see how it goes.

On a positive note, my scales have taken off most of the 2kg gain I was whinging about yesterday. Looking back over the last two weeks, I’m about 1,000 kcals over my aim to eat to my goal TDEE on NFDs, but mostly sticking to it. I’m quite happy at 500 kcals for a FD so I’m not going to follow Dr M’s new advice unless it gets difficult for me.

Must remember to keep my liquids up on NFDs so off to make a cup of tea. Have a lovely day, y’all!

    Advice requested…

If you had to go to a remote location with no access to food stirs/outlets, no fridge, freezer or microwave, and you don’t eat refined carbohydrates (eg flour), sugar, generally any thing processed… What would you take?

Also throw into the mix – working from 0700 to 2300 daily.

Really appreciate some advice. I don’t think this would be a good time for a FD.

Should have added that this would be for 4 days.

    Day 14 – CARDIFF UK – NFD

    Starting Weight : 165.5lbs

    Today’s Weight : 161.5lbs (4.0 lbs) March Target 8. 5lbs

Good FD yesterday, but Monday’s FD just resets the weekend and I’m back to my Saturday morning weight. I have struggled to drink enough water the last couple of days, so maybe this has had an effect.

Should still be on track for EOM goal just need to keep my usual control on NFD.

    Good luck today fasters.

    Day 14, Gozo, Malta,nfd

    Day 14: Glasgow, Scotland. FD

Feel transformed by my decision to chuck the scales…every morning, I’m going to try on a piece of clothing instead (a piece of clothing that has been unwearable for months due to being too small, or very tight, and so on…). This morning, I tried on a pair of slim leg trousers that I could wear before, but let’s just say that they weren’t a pretty sight! They fit perfectly – very flattering. I can also see that my boobs are no longer trying to climb their way out of my bra, so that’s also a bonus. I’m not weighing myself until 31st March, but after that, I may ban scales from my home, and just work on the ‘do my clothes fit well?’, and ‘what does this mirror show?’ system.

Today is back to the veggie chilli that I make so often (it’s easy to make, very tasty, and also filling). Also, I’ve been drinking a cup of lemon water every morning (which I hated at first, but now I love it), which is helping with ‘transit’ issues.

Hope all of you out there are happy with your progress, and as ever, best of luck for all the fasters today.

Day 14 a gloriously sunny Belfast FD
I had a little indulgence this morning. My OH got up for work and I lay in bed to finish my book. Thank you whoever it was (from last month’s post) for recommending ‘A man called Ove’. Really enjoyed it.
Successful FD yesterday and a vigorous swim, although I still seem to be stuck on this weight plateau. I have a touring caravan, and it’s our first outing this weekend. That, coupled with a trip to NYC next week with my girlfriends, will put a serious strain on my willpower!

I’ve just got an invitation to a friend’s for lunch. She’s going to cook, so it would be rude not to enjoy her efforts. (She’s a great cook!) So I will eat nothing this morning and will have a light supper

I am seriously behind with the posts. Now the book is finished, I shall settle down and catch up.
Thank you again @at for your masterpiece and your supportive comments.
    Stay strong everyone!

    Day 14, London, UK, FD.

Thinking of doing my 1st b2b2b this Tue/ Wed/ Thurs, but without putting too much pressure on myself, so I’ll stick with ‘thinking’ about it. I haven’t been particularly mindful or controlled lately on my NFDs, aiming to kick start things again!!

Good luck everybody, whether fasting or not. Stay strong!!

    Day 14 Oxfordshire NFD

Going out for lunch today with a girlfriend but we only ever share something light and have one glass of wine.

@sarah57 I don’t know if this is of interest to you but I prepare my food in advance for NFDs (except when lunching out). On a Sunday I make about a litre of good gravy from scratch, I steam a couple of sweetheart cabbages with caraway seeds, and I cook a couple of swedes which I then mash. I put all this in the fridge and then on NFDs I usually cook about three meatballs in the gravy, heat up what I want from the veg and put it all together to make a meal. This way I don’t have to think about when or what I am going to eat and I can also have another meal if I want to as the calories are small. It takes the hassle out of it for me. My husband eats differently from me.

The other thing I make and keep in the fridge is a sugar free jelly with either a can of raspberries or mandarins put in, a finely sliced raw eating apple added and a few walnuts on top. I eat this with some kefir on top. It satisfies a desire for something sweet or fruity or crunchy and again is in the fridge and is THERE.

    @and….exhale
I was a bit disappointed to read that MM is changing the goalposts. I thought the whole point of fasting was to go without food for a period of time and therefore avoid constantly stoking the insulin hormone. It’s the eating three times a day that bothers me.
