  • 2nd post- weighing and counting calories is a thankless task and it is not IMPORTANT

Caught up on posts and recognise that scales are causing major issues for many fasters. Well done to those that use them in a positive way as an incentive.

Everyone has a different approach to losing weight and we all need support. This thread is great for this reason. But obsessive behaviour is not healthy.

I know you will find this a bit revolutionary but life is so much better if you do ‘NOT’ weigh daily or count calories. I stopped counting calories last October and stopped weighing this month. I ‘do’ miss knowing my weight but I ‘don’t’ miss the highs and lows associated with knowing. A monthly weigh is actually enough, it’s more normal behaviour. It’s something that a person who is not on a diet would do. We are not on diets now, we have changed our ‘way of life’, lets change other diet habits too.

Seriously if you just eat healthily you can do this without the daily stress of weighing and counting.
Most of us know which foods are high calorie(anything with sugar). Concentrate on stress free way of life and get lots of low impact exercise like walking and swimming(few injuries from these).
Drink lots of water, green tea, black coffee(if you like it), even black tea with a splash of milk.

Focus on your health and the weight loss will be a bonus. Stress makes your body sick, it is unhealthy, focus on relaxation and not bringing unnessary stress into your life. Drop friends who are too needy. Get out in the fresh air daily. Try to get 8 hours sleep nightly.

Be kind to your body, love the person you are ‘now’. Look forward to the new healthy you of the future.

There are some healthy changes we can make

Drink Kefir daily to improve gut bacteria and improve immunity to unhealthy germs.
Drink lots of water to flush out toxins
    Take regular exercise
Replace pasta, rice, bread with healthy alternatives like zero noodles, zero rice, cloud bread.
Stop eating sugar, it’s addictive, it’s a drug and it harms your body.
Find healthy treat s- nuts, fruit or a nice walk with a friend.

All these thinks are scientifically proven to assist with weight loss. I know there is evidence to support daily weighing for more effective weight loss but emotionally not everyone can hack it.

Good Luck. If this post helps just one faster I will be very pleased.

Day 13 Monday — Colorado USA– FD

Lany36– I’m taking a closer look at Dr.MM “8 week blood sugar diet” too.

I’m finding that with my ramped up exercise, especially the strength training, water or liquid only Fast Days are just not cutting it. The 800 calories gives me enough room to eat proteins for rebuilding & repair after workouts. I still stay completely away from sugars & limit my carbs (do NOT want to go thru withdrawing from those again. That was tough, but worth it!)

I have a sunny beach vacation with family coming up in 3 weeks, so my plan in that time is:
1– continue my weight lifting & cardio
    2– Sun/ Mon/ Tues/ Wed/ Thurs: for five days follow 800 calories over 16:8 (eat lunch & dinner only.)
3– Fri/ Sat as two Controlled NFDs (calories between 2000-2200.) This allows socializing & Date Night with DH. Also, hopefully convinces my body there is no famine going on, still okay to release those fat cells!

I know you’ve been struggling with that dang plateau for a while, I truly hope shaking things up & trying The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet of 800 calories does the trick for you!! I’ll be watching your progress & will post mine at the end of March (as I’ve sworn off the daily weigh-ins for now to concentrate on my exercise fitness.)

    Best of luck, my friend!

    Day 13|Toronto|FD
@flourbaby: “wizened US TV detective types” now I know who my role models and tribe are 🙂

    Second post,

Regarding weighing, of course one should do whatever they choose to do but I don’t find weighing daily any more obsessive than brushing my teeth – I do both morning and night. I like seeing what I weigh, have been charting it since I started here but that is just to keep a record of it. I have been weighing daily since gym class in high school. I actually usually know what I will weigh (within a pound) before I step on the scale – same as my blood pressure – we have a machine and I took mine this morning – I knew it was low and it was – 94/64 – 52 pulse. I like being able to “know” my body.

If one is unduly upset by weighing, of course they shouldn’t do so.

    Day13 Maine NFD

Good Morning All! I am so happy – yesterday’s FD got rid of the 4 lb binge from Sat nite! I’m still up .4, but that’s ok – it’ll come off. So relieved! I know there will be times like that, but I felt soo discouraged. But, pushed that “reset” button, both mentally & physically, and my body responded….thank goodness & all your posts!

@fatrabbit – don’t get discouraged – believe in yourself & carry on. In the middle of Sat nite, when I couldn’t sleep, I was ready to just drop out. It took every ounce of courage Sunday morning to weigh & embrace a fast day….especially being on vacation. Even if I hadn’t lost any weight, the feeling that I was in control yesterday was worth it.

@jojo58 – I do love your posts & can certainly attest to the quickly gained, quickly lost this week! So happy I took charge!

@bert1802 – good luck in Buffalo w/ your Mom – so many of us can relate…are they getting any of the blizzard that will be racing up the coast? Have heard snow was scarce in Buffalo this winter – weird – maybe you’ll luck out! But, better pack your new boots!

    @biddiev – hope you’re birthday was spectacular!

Well, everybody gathering by the pool for coffee & doughnuts – not me – told hubby I had to work on my assignment! Heading out for therapy walk – took 2 yesterday & know that helped shred evidence of a loss of control day. Will be mindful – group of us going for ribs tonight – I can handle it! Don’t want to feel like I did Sat nite.

Make it a great day everybody!

    Day 13 Surrey UK FD

    So far so good.

    hastings fd today

i have just read your comments and you are right because keep weighing my self is really getting me down it seems at the moment no matter what i have been doing i just cant get the last stone off.it can some time take over your life.i dont weigh what i eat because its mainly salad and veg anyway.have never been a sweet eater really so lucky in that way.trying some hit training this week as well not going to weigh my self for a couple of weeks its going to be hard but at least ill have a better weekend because the last 2 i have weighed my self on a friday morning after my 2 fd,s and not lost a thing and ive been bloody misrable.so thank you you have cheered me up.going through the menapause as well so that dont help.

Day 13 – Cumbria Uk – B2B FDs (late start!)

Well the above cryptic FD means that in view of changing social commitments this week I’m now planning on doing FDs starting from 1130hrs today and will continue until Thursday evening. As I have said before the beauty of this way of life is how you can adapt it to your social life!

For those who missed the link regarding the revamped 5:2 by Dr M it was posted by @missj2002 at the bottom of Page 29

@monkeydo – such a good feeling when we get rid of those bigger clothes – you are doing so well – keep up the positive attitude
@goldensun – the system does seem to play up every now and then!!!

@gopackgo, @Unica hija and @cheyenne12 – Welcome to the 31 Day March 2017 Challenge – we are a big and friendly group with everyone at different stages of their 5:2 WOL and some on maintenance as well. Share as much or as little as you feel like but you will have great support here. It would be helpful for me if you could start your daily post with the day of the month, where you are, and if you are doing a FD (Fast day) or a NFD (Non Fast Day). Example today for me would be Day 13 – Cumbria UK – FD. Add more to your daily post or not as you please. If you don’t sign in daily then just update at the start of your post whether each day since you last signed in was a FD or NFD – makes updating the spreadsheet a bit easier – Thanks

@bert1802 – lovely message for those struggling – always supportive – I was a bit late starting my FD today but lots of changes in social commitments so I started fasting at 1130hrs and not planning to break my fast until dinner out on Thursday night …….hold tight
@therealwil78 – am I correct in assuming that Days 10-12 were NFD?
@helenalee – I have lost track of when your FD and NFDs are……..Day was ??FD or NFD then not sure until Day 13 FD – please advice

I am a bit busy today so not enough time to comment on too many posts but I have skimmed them all to this point – some interesting discussions regarding when to weigh and thoughts on Dr M’s 800cal on FD revision – I’m sure that we will as always keep experimenting and find what works for us – personally I enjoy doing a water only FD and a 400cal FD each week and it has worked for me so will stick to it as I continue on my maintainance journey

Strength and Focus to all the pocketeers and those on a mindful NFD today. The sun is now out here in Cumbria – I’m out to enjoy it and will try to catch up late this evening after my Yoga class.

    NAMASTE

Day 13 Chicago, IL USA – FD

Overall goal is to get down to 125 pounds. Need to lose 26 pounds!

Day 6,FD, WA, Had a good NFD yesterday with yoga and a run (and a movie and dinner out). Struck by how huge restaurant portions are. A whole meal of left overs from dining out! Happy Monday and for the faster, keep the fortitude today!

    Day 13, Germany, FD

Have a great day Fasters and Non-Fasters!

@biddiev – hope you had a wonderful birthday!

    Day 13, Cumbria. UK, nfd

    Hi UK day 13 FD

Happy Birthday @biddiev – hope you have a lovely day!

    @hannah – hope the re-pitch went well.

@fatrabbit – the ‘F’ word is banned on this thread – there is no such thing as failure on this thread. You only fail if you give up.

@krisnia – we are all on the same day no matter when we started. Day of the month = day of challenge. 13th March day 13, 14th March day 14. We will all finish the challenge on the same day 31st March.

Question on the blood sugar diet if 800 cals are recommended each day for 8 weeks when does a low calorie diet become just another low calorie diet which I thought messes with metabolism.

With regards to weighing – I do it depending on my frame of mind. For a while I could not cope with daily weighing – fine if it was going down not so if it was up. Then I changed my outlook – I accepted it for what it was and saw it only as a way of observing the way my body works. I changed then to not weighing but found I could fool myself (same as calorie counting) I need to do both every now and then as a reality check. If they are up I need to focus more carefully – same with calories but I am not a slave or fanatic with either. I use clothes and the way I feel – if I feel heavy I sometimes weigh to just confirm, same as when I feel lighter. Like anything what suits one will not suit another and as long as you use the scale for what it is – an indication, all will be fine.

    Day 13, Newcastle UK, NFD

Hello everyone – I’ve missed you all!! Just back from a great weekend with friends in Glasgow – 3 nights of country music at the Armadillo and generally catching up with absolutely no time to read or post to our forum. All in all I’m pleased with my control over the weekend. I fitted in with all the planned meals, but didn’t overeat. I had planned my normal Monday fast today, but breakfast was already cooking when OH and I got up and it would have been very rude to not have it. However, it was healthy, not too much and I didn’t have any toast. I’ve read through today’s posts and will catch up on the last couple of days in due course.

@biddiev – Wishing you a very happy birthday.
@jojo58 – as always – an inspiring and helpful post thank you
@happymargo – Thanks for the book recommendations – I’ll get them ordered today
@goldensun – I’m pleased I spotted your question and I’ll try to explain more clearly:

My B2B fast will usually start after dinner on Sunday night – say 8pm. It will then extend to say 8am on Wednesday morning when I shall have breakfast. So that is a total fasting window of 60 hours. 8pm Sunday to 8pm Monday to 8pm Tuesday to 8am Wednesday = 24 hours plus 24 hours plus 12 hours = 60 hours.
If I have two separate fasting days – as I did last week – I started 8pm Monday night to 8pm Tuesday night to 8am Wednesday morning – so 24 hours plus 12 hours = 36 hour fasting window. Repeated later in the week meant two separate fasts of 36 hours each meaning a total of 72 hours fasting last week compared to my normal 60 hours.

    Does that help?

I’m very excited to hear there’s an update to 5:2 and shall be searching for @missj2002‘s link as soon as I’ve hit the submit button on this.

@at for the record Days 11 & 12 were NFD. Sorry I didn’t get time to post.

    All the best my friends.

    Day 13 – USA – NFD

@biddiev – happy birthday! @and…exhale: love the Yoda comment; I’m going to print it out above my fridge! @HannaWatto: hoping your clients see the value of your business service! @lindasue: glad to hear someone else did a weight chart over the years; mine is a weight and measurement chart that I scribbled on tiny pieces of paper over the years and kept until last week when I compiled it into a table format so I could see some patterns; if you have the time, it’s valuable. I noticed that my blood pressure has been dropping into good ranges, which is one of the better benefits of 5:2 now that I’ve been doing it for almost 9 weeks. But I also noticed constipation in the a.m., which is totally foreign to me, even though I drink lots of water, ACV, teas. I’m not eating anything different, wondering if anyone else had the same experience?

    3rd post, day 13.

Well I’m firmly in the weigh everyday camp!!! I really need to keep myself honest, I struggle with portion control, not really a snacker, except when I binge on a family sized……..[insert carb/ sugar loaded snack of choice], but I tend to do that as a meal replacement in one fell swoop rather than grazing! If I weren’t able to monitor calories in vs daily weight, I don’t think I’d have any idea where I went wrong. Someday, I hope/expect to be able to weigh-in weekly (Eeeek!) or even monthly (palpitations) and have a better grasp of what a normal portion looks like!

@august2024…….there’s no shame in owning it!!!! You belong to a proud and honest tribe, I luv a wizened detective type, from a time when men were men, deodorant was for women, you would strike a match off of your stubble, a calorie could well have been Greek for sausage ……………………………………. and spoons stood upright & unsupported in the coffee cup!!!!!! Having worked in construction for 20+ years, I have been witness to the ‘Evolution of Man’!!!!!! Happy days!!!

Fayefaye- I’ve been there many times. When the cravings see just way too strong for willpower. Soooo, I would for future moments when carbs feel necessary and nothing else will do. Have a really lovely cup smd make a special drink in it, so maybe a really indulgent coffee or herbal tea and then have a frozen mars bar in the freezer ready. Honestly, you will be sooo satisfied, and because it takes longer to eat, you won’t feel the need to devour and move onto something else. It’s not a piece of raw veg or a handful of nuts but it’s also not a long list of sugary foods which you may have wanted otherwise. Hope that’s helpful xxx

Day 13, Rocky Mountains, US, FD

Thankyou @mrsgettingthere – that’s a great idea and I can see that will help avoid multiple disasters like yesterday! – a couple of things that will take longer to enjoy rather than a whole bunch of treats that are over in a second and end up being unsatisfying. thanks xx

Day 13 – SW WA USA – FD

Have a wonderful day fasting pocketeers or otherwise!

    Day 13 – USA 🇺🇸 PA – NFD
    Hi All✨

I have many posts to read. And I’m really looking forward to all of them.

PLUS I’m very excited 😊 I weighed myself this morning and I am down from 181lbs. From the beginning of the month to 172 lbs. I don’t weigh myself often and I don’t count calories on FD’s because it’s easier to just not eat. I drink lots of water and I have a drink of @ 90 calories at noon.
Vital Reds Gundry MD no Val’s. 1/8 of a cup of unsweetened coconut milk✨Water @3-4 Strawberries inthe blender. A person could add no sugar no fat yogurt.

The third fast day I had chicken broth in the evening.
@at Thanks for the info about the warm water and lemon 🍋 I put a bit of Vanilla or regular Stevia in it and it has been working out well at night, so I can sleep. ✨😘

The trick for me was to stay away from the sugar. That way insulin ( which prevents any fat burning, won’t kick in. I will continue burning fat 🤞✨🤞And continue to have energy.

So I’m 🤞to continue feeling good today. Have a NFD with small portion of chicken and vegs. Then starting with a FD either Tursday or Wednesday; then do my 3 day fast days all over again. I really don’t like the RollerCoaster 🎢 that the sugar, carbs gives me. So far this is working for me. I will have my NFD this weekend😁
I will have deserts … but not today ✨😊✨

I don’t box myself in. After 😴 sleeping in the morning my body is on fast mode. I personally am not hungry. So it’s easy enough for me just to continue fasting. I see how long I can go, I’ve found I feel better after fasting. So many days I choose to fast for another day, just to get it over with! 😊 But I don’t “make myself do it” that would back fire.

I just try to remember, that once my body gets into fasting mode my body is healing.

For me it’s healing from Lymes disease
    Asthma, preventing high blood pressure.
    Helping to lessen anxiety attacks😊

I Love our group! I’m so Thankful to read all the posts… You all keep me sane.✨ I hope 🤞 I can be as much help and inspiration as I find in this wonderful group💛

Keep on keepin on! It will happen✨

    Day 13. Hampshire UK.

    NFD.

Was meant to be a fast day today but I caught a virus yesterday and couldn’t face a day of feeling ill in conjunction with black tea only and no food!

Nothing serious, just coldy type virus. If I feel better, I will do a FD on Wed.

    @jojo58 – what a great post!

    2nd post
Awkward moment when I put 😘 And I meant to put 😊

    Day13 – Chester UK – NFD.

This forum is keeping me going, thanks to everyone for posting and especially @at for keeping us all organised. just been shopping and loads of fresh fish reduced in the supermarket . I’ve got the next 4 FDs sorted out, although my OH did look a bit put out when he saw what I’d bought.

    2nd post

I just ate a small slice of pizza left over by my son. I was supposed to fast on 800 calories today but probably it will be 1100 calories.

    Good evening/night to everyone.

    Day 11–NFD–Mass, USA
    Day 12–NFD
    Day 13–FD

    Surrey, UK

Days 10-12 NFD (planned a FD on day 10 but it all went horribly wrong at about 2pma nd I didn’t pull it back)

Day 13 FD. Planning my first B2B as I really need to get back on that wagon so fingers crossed.

    day 13 Cornwall UK FD

Ciren2 We live in Cornwall! Honestly Sunday was the first nice dry day for months and it just felt so good to be outside! Back to being overcast today but dry thankfully !

I’ve been with you pocket fasters today though not on the list. Had a good Pilates class followed by coffee and catch up with my daughter. Visited a neighbour who is going through chemo, hadnt been able to for a while because of being away and then having a heavy cold! It was good to see her and know that she’s doing well.

Tomorrow I’ll fast until dinner time and have a fast day on Wednesday. We may be heading up to Taunton on Wed for childcare duties if my son in law is offshore.

Jojo58 I recently started taking kefer and it sure gets my system moving! I know a lot of people don’t like the taste but I really do! I make mine with goats milk. I quite agree regarding sugar it really isn’t good for our bodies, thankfully I don’t have a sweet tooth but very occaisonally I do have a sweet pud!

    Onwards and down !!

    Day 13 / Sweden / FD

FD going well. I find them easier and more controlled then my weekends. I still need to get my weekends under control.

    Take care

    Day 13 – USA, PA – NFD

HEY All 😊 Keep on, Keepin’ On!
    @biddiev 🎶🎉Happy Birthday ✨🎉

@fatrabbit, hope your spirits are better ✨ I will weigh myself 2x a month. Beginning and ending. Then any time I’m pretty d* sure I’ve lost weight. The day to day weight can fluctuate because of Water, if food is in your system and even what clothes you have on.
It’s what we do in the long run and how we handle accidentally eating excess carbs that can cause water weight, inflammation. I tend to feel bad if I’ve eaten sugar, excess carbs. But now I have a reset plan. That puts me on track.
There are so many videos on YouTube that talk about people getting healthier, physically, mentally and emotionally. Sometimes when I watch and read about the benefits I feel so much better about fasting. @fattabbit give it some time✨ I Hope some of these things work for you!

    Day 13 Virginia USA FD

    Go Monday fasters !

    Day 14 – NZ – NFD

    Day 14 NZ FD
The wind and rain seem to have left us. I hope permanently. We’ve had such horrific weather that its lovely now its calm. Weekly weigh in down to 81kg. Thrilled.

second post. Sorry @at but I can’t seem to find the link for the spreadsheet. Would you post it again please.

    Outside Philly, PA USA

    Day 12 NFD
    Day 13 NFD
    Day 14 FD

Off to a great start today; was not very motivated for a FD but I’ve gained some momentum. Even went to the grocery store and didn’t feel weak, deprived, or sad. (stocking up in anticipation of having kids home from school for a day or two due to the blizzard heading our way!)

On my NFDs I definitely eat better than I was before starting this program. Still a few splurges here and there, but much more controlled and mindful overall, much less endless snacking. Thanks @at and everyone!

By the way, how many consecutive hours makes a fast? I think I’ve missed that along the way. Thanks!

@orpheusx I’m with you, weekends are my cheating days! I need to stop before they catch up with me!!

    Day 13 : Cheshire, UK : FD

Liquid fast day today and this is the time of day I start to struggle a bit. I’m not hungry but I think of food. Plus annoyingly, I somehow unticked/unchecked the box to receive notifications so I haven’t been able to read your posts throughout the day. I don’t know how I did that on my phone. At least I have a number of posts to look forward to, which will keep me busy for a while. The first fast day seems to be challenging for me. I have to make it a liquid fast otherwise if I eat anything, no matter how small or healthy, I will want more. 🙂

    Cheerio for now! 🙂

    Day 14/FD/Aus

For those of us who have been following this WOL for some time and had success what is the most important thing you have learnt?

Mine is learning not to diet.

@jojo‘s your advice to not focus on calories nor numbers on the scale is so right. They can be the biggest demotivators and stressors and really impact on making this a successful way of life. Instead focus on your health and healthy eating. Shake it up from time to time. Alow yourself treats. Take a break. Shake up your metabolism by varying how much you eat on different days. Don’t fall into the trap of eating low calorie every day. That’s another diet. Intermittent fasting should be sufficient.

Reading is a great motivator. There are many inspirational and encouraging people sharing our journey on these forums. My guru is Dr Moseley because he introduced me to this way of life. Another is Dr Fung. Take what you will of their advice and tweak it to suit you. No one theory suits everyone. Our genetics, gut health, health, lifestyle and daily demands are all different. We are in different phases of life, child bearing, child raising, grandparenting, pre/post menopausal… Some are impacted by major health problems, MS, Lymes, fibromyalgia, asthma, back issues. Find what works for you. We are all unique.

Find time to and learn to take care of you. Have a great and positive day!

    2nd post

Kitchen disaster has put a scupper in the works today. DH has dishwasher in bits spread across kitchen, to be fair once dishwasher is pulled from under the counter it pretty much fills our little kitchen.

No chance of cooking so emergency chip shop visit. So my day comes in around 950cals. Good day for Dr M to increase the cal limit 😜, (but I think in future I’ll stick to what I know works for me).

    Day 13– Virginia USA, FD.

Feeling ok, almost 4 pm and not feeling terribly hungry. Haven’t lost any weight but clothes feel good. I guess it just takes time? I’m not overly worried because I’m not really gaining but the fluctuation is a little annoying. I feel much better physically and have more energy, before I started 5:2 this month I had anemia and I could feel it, the lack of energy was terrible. Right now I have more energy than I can remember.

    Together we can do it!

    Day 13 Uk FD

Just realised I put day 12 again this morning. Day 12 was the failed FD, todays is the replacement. It is going alright so far, I just have to hang on through the evening. Thanks to everyone being so supportive. It has really helped today. I feel better having had two more relaxing days, there is always work when you look after animals, even on days off, but it was nothing too strenuous, aand with the lovely spring weather, rather pleasant. I really over did it on Saturday because the person who would normally do half the cleaning has hurt her back so I had to do all of it plus some urgent grooming and a bonding all on Sat because rain was forecast for Sunday(wrong). I ended up hurting really badly on top of all the stress and hormonal nonsense. I really need to chill out about having a slip up under those circumstances. And I didn’t eat anything bad, just an extra large salad with extra cheese. I am so far from craving sugar that it didn’t cross my mind to eat anything else. I made a delicious vegan chili today with a chickpea and sweetcorn topping, I would love a second helping but I can have it tomorrow. I’m not actually hungry anyway. The bowl I had at 4pm was probably over 500 calories but I’m not going to worry about that, it was good and filling. I am drinking peppermint tea and listening to upbeat music hanging onto my determination.

Day 11, 12 – NFD (I would never find myself fasting on a weekend!)
    Day 13, FD, US:
Had a tiny bit of jerky and a few Ritz crackers to push back the hunger this morning and then about 3/4 cup chicken noodle soup for lunch. Usually I don’t eat until dinnertime on fast days, but PMS makes me ravenous. Thanks for letting me share!

    Hi friends
I am getting disappointed. I reduced around 4000 calories last week under my weekly allowed calories. BUT I gained 1 kilogram instead of reducing more than half kilo. What’s wrong with my body?! 🙁

    Second post

@onahealthyhigh really intersting and helpful post, thank you.
@Jonnyr if you have time I would love to hear about the impact of 4/5 consecutive low calorie days

Stay strong pocketeers, not long now.

    Day 12 Portugal nfd
    Day 13 FD
didn’t have a great weekend in terms of eating mindfully. I need to stop letting the weekend ruin all the good work during the week. Quite a good FD today, although possibly a tad over the 500 cal. Have missed quite a few posts but will try and catch up.

    Day 13 | FD | UK

I like Monday fasts, they seem to go quite smoothly, except when I get home I do get cold and have a little snooze and that then messes with my sleep pattern.

I normally meet up with my friends for a walk but they like running too which I don’t do! (boob issues) so will meet up later this week.

    Stay positive guys xoxo
