  • I still prefer no calories on fast days. 🙂

    Day 12 – Perth, W.Aust – NFD

So OH is away at the moment and I took the opportunity to have a girly lunch with friends. I guess these can always be a bit of a worry – too much food, too much to drink, but I booked a ‘voucher deal’ where one mains and one drink were included in the price. Worked out in my favour as I didn’t really want to spend any more money and so the drinks and food were enough. Good on the way home too as I got to partake in a random breath test, fortunately one drink over 4 hours doesn’t register much.

@lilymartin yes, Mundella is my absolute favourite and mainstay yoghurt, as are blueberries, unfortunately I was tempted by the bargain of a different brand, but I won’t let that happen again I can assure you 🙂

Be strong, be kind, be fabulous.

    Day 12 – Queensland, Australia – NFD

@missj2002 – interesting article. I have only just started this way of eating (2 weeks ago) and yes, I have found that the fast days can be challenging. I can’t imagine that 200 extra cals per day would make a lot of difference, as long as you are still only eating to TDEE on the other days. If we are just looking at the weight loss aspect of the diet (putting aside the other proposed health benefits) I think it still mainly comes down to the total number of calories in vs calories out, so 400 extra cals per week would just make your weight loss a little bit slower. If 200 extra cals per day makes a fast day easier to achieve, makes a person less irritable, and prevents them falling off the wagon and having a binge, then surely that is a good thing.

    Day 11 – NFD – Canada
Wow… I just love this board. I appreciate all the posts, the life stages, the countries, the different p.o.v.s…
@at and @ Coda, yes, I will drink more water which frankly has fallen behind coffee in the 7-noon slot and will try prunes! And walking… plain old walking helps, my body is telling me to do it and I should heed the call.
@dykask – thank you for letting us glimpse your expat lifestyle. I see much in there that I recognize from our family’s year in Spain (ie. a culture with a different relationship to childhood) and much to Canada and also, the reality that nowhere is perfect and that home is where we hang our hat.
To all those struggling, I’m no great pace along but I do see that hormones, stress and exercise alll manipulate the scales in the short term but not the long… trust in the direction and the method!
I have true affection for so many of your posts… am grateful to 5:2 for this community.
Next week is March Break. I’m hosting play dates every afternoon for my 7 & 10 year old… am aiming for a FD somewhere, but it may be a ‘hold onto your hollyhocks kind of week’.

    Day 11 – Canada – NFD

    Day 12, FD. Sydney Australia

This is my 4th FD since starting. Its Sunday. my first 3 FDs were on a work day which I find a bit difficult, so am trying a weekend day.
After the first 5 days I had dropped 1.5KGs, then weighed myself at day 10 and back up 0.5kgs. Panicked – as I thought the scales would only show my weight moving in one direction. Especially as I am very careful about what I eat on NFDs.
But I am also in peri-menapause, with flushes and headaches and tiredness so am blaming the weight fluctuation on that! Because my clothes feel loser but the scales are not reflecting that! Does anyone else experience these symptoms and find it interferes with the scales?

    Day 12 NZ NFD
Thankyou everyone for the birthday wishes. I really appreciated them. Had a lovely day yesterday with good food and bubbly, yum. I am really focusing on eating a plant based diet and haven’t had any reflux or that “heavy”feeling at bedtime. It has to be better for me, loving all the salads and extra veg. OH has made a lentil and mushroom ragout for dinner, with butternut and potato mash and a green salad. Can hardly wait. Its difficult for him as he is a dedicated meat eat but I am grateful that he has taken it all onboard. I certainly don’t mind him eating meat I just choose not too. Well thats a bit of a rant hope I didn’t bore you all.

@at Your encouragement to members of this forum are amazing. Thank you. Together we win!

    Day 12 FD Oman
Sorry I haven’t been able to keep up with posts this month. Hope everyone is doing Ok!

    Day 11, Oceanside CA, NFD

Started off with 4 mile morning walk. Beautiful looking at the Pacific Ocean.

Regular protein waffle with fruit breakfast. Short shopping trip and back out for another 2.8 miles. Love it.

Delicious steak, green been, sweet potato dinner with wine. All within TDEE.

One more weekend NFD. Another nice walk and healthy dinner. All in balance.

    Day 12 – NL – NFD

    Day 12, FD, Switzerland

    Day 12 / UK / FD

Yesterday’s NFD was (felt) controlled (I’m still not MFPing things, but I didn’t indulge anywhere: my porridge was slightly too much in the morning, but lasted me until 5, then a bit of Skyr to tie me over to a healthy portion of homemade chili). But I couldn’t leave my desk for most of the day and today I am mostly at home, so we’ll see how easy I’ll find it to fast today. At least my room, which still needs substantial unpacking and sorting out, is as far away from the kitchen as possible.

Have a good Sunday all around! Anyone up for a mini-pocket?

    @jenniferb
    @missymoomoo
    @luna09
    @skinnylove

(Hope I haven’t left anyone off)

    EDIT
    @missymoomoo
Oman, how exciting! My best friend went there a year or two ago and absolutely loved it!

@skinnylove…yes I’m in. It’s already midday here. Did 25mins HIIT on bike at gym so had a few almonds after. I’ll have a miso soup in a few hours and then dinner tonight @400 cals. Chicken breast and salad. I always try to drink lots of water on FDs…it makes a difference.

Yes! Oman is a lovely country. Gets v got by May so we’re enjoying the outdoors now while we can!

    Day 12: Glasgow, Scotland. FD.

All prepared for fast day today (veggie chilli…), and I’m going out for my Sunday walk (7 miles). Have a good day everyone!

    Day 12 UK FD

I said I thought MM was going to increase the calories and change the timing didn’t I. The 500/600 calorie figure was chosen because it was a nice round proportion not because it had any scientific backing, they didn’t test any others. And he is putting more emphasis on a long over night fast which I also thought was coming to maximize other benefits. He clearly thinks that coming out for just one meal would make it unsustainable for many though. I haven’t fussed much about counting the fast day calories too closely because I noticed the random way that figure was chosen and have been vindicated. I thought all along that eating a small healthy filling meal was the way to go. I make sure to get my 5 a day in on fast days too and I haven’t worried when that took me beyond 500.

I splurged a bit last night, egged on by a bit of a sod it attitude brought on by my current stall in weight loss. I hope it will turn around after this week. A couple of things will be out of the way and hopefully the rest won’t look as daunting when the pile isn’t quite as high. @at I don’t like meditating, I prefer encorporating a mindful attitude into daily activities. I need my focus out of myself not inside. I realised this when I tried mindful meditation for pain control. I don’t need to focus into my body where it hurts, I need to step outside it where it doesn’t.

    DAY 12 – UK – NFD

Good fd yesterday and was exactly 10 stone (140 lbs) this morning. YAAAAAAH! Only a lb this month – but a lb off is going in the right direction. Will try to eat within my tdee to-day so that it stays off. AND I had a fairly good sleep again. My inability to sleep at the start of this WOL in January is definitely waning and I now have more goodish nights than not – it obviously just takes time for the body to adjust.
I have taken on board some of the good advice given to me here. xx

    Day 12, Germany, NFD

    Day 12 – Switzerland – NFD

I’ve been weighing myself every day, just for a change as I used to be a strict ‘once a week’ adherent. Anyway, I refuse to believe that my first day of overeating resulted in a 2kg gain, so will take today’s results with a raised eyebrow (although might be the salt too).

Venturing into the realm of Too Much Information here, but does anyone have experience of weight-control around menopause/stopping birth control? I thought I had ten years to go, but apparently my family tends towards a relatively early menopause and 43 is about dead on. No symptoms, but I recently stopped birth control for other reasons, which is partially why I’m trying to be strict on 5:2 – the internet is full of ‘I stopped b/c and gained 20lbs’ stories but I know everyone is different. Have annual gynae check-up this week, so may ask to get hormone levels checked…

Good luck to everyone with their Sunday, FD or NFD!

    Day12, Cumbria uk, FD

Had a great nfd yesterday, somehow didn’t need any tea which is completely unheard of as evenings are my most hungriest normally. So ended up on around 1000cals.

Missj2002 that’s soooo interesting, I would find 800cal fasts so much easier and would manage 4:3 long-term I think. X
    good luck everyone. Xx

    Day 12 UK NFD 🌈

Yay Sunday, day of rest for me.

Have really focussed on the last 12 days, on food and exercise and the better I am, the more momentum I gain. If I fall of the wagon a little I’m then at the frame of mind to say well I’ve done it now let’s carry on, then I feel bad.
So just a taste, just a little won’t hurt actually does hurt me and my resolve. Wheel falls off wagon! 😂😂😂

Just something I found out about myself on my WOL journey.

Have a fab day all xxx love the daily mail article however I’m ok on the 500 cals so gonna continue with that ATM. Good thing about the fasting is that it’s so adaptable whatever way you choose to do it.

    Day 12: Gloucestershire, UK: NFD
It’s 10am and I’ve eaten “everything in the kitchen” for breakfast!
Off to church shortly …(AND it’s supposed to be Lent…HA!) so that will occupy my thoughts for awhile.
I have a salmon meal planned for lunch, then…my trouble is that once I start eating, I find it difficult to stop.
I’ve not yet managed to lose the half stone I gained since Christmas, as I’ve not been able to CONSISTANTLY fast.
@coda: I have printed off your advice re; changing something about my danger-time/routines. This way I will remember your wise words and, hopefully, act on them.
I have my day off work tomorrow and if I don’t fast, I MUST do so on Tuesday.

    Day 12, London, UK, FD

Catching up after my mums birthday celebration yesterday…………..my aunt who’ll be 90 in a couple of months can only be described as ‘Naughty’……..she lives for a double entendre, so funny!!!

@ciren2, I hope you’re with me today?? Stay strong

@happymargo…….12 pages at a steep incline………………here come those buns of steel!!!

Good luck today everybody, keep the faith!!

Not least for my own benefit. It’s just gone 10am here and I feel I might need it today:

Ahh, this sounds lovely! I am now living right underneath the roof, where there, mostly, is a nice chill, but it’s really miserable outside my window today and the cold is creeping in. Coupled with FD chill I’d love to have a nice Oman breeze! Did you move there or have you always lived there (hope you don’t mind me asking. My friend came back with the impression that Oman is just opening up to the rest of the world, which has given it this otherworldliness in my imagination)?

    @and… exhale
Interesting. I’m in my early 30s but have also recently stopped BC. Incidently, it coincided with taking up 5:2, so that’s balanced out any potential weight gain. What I have been wondering about is how there has been some research into how hormonal BC might change a woman’s attitudes or even personality and character. Sounds just a little bit creepy. I have been trying to discern any changes, but frankly, the circumstances that let me to ditch the pill in the first place would probably cloud any of that. TMI over 🙂

    2nd post 🌈

Someone asked about weight ⚖️and when to weigh, it’s whatever suits you. 🗓Once a month,📆 week, 📅daily depends if it helps your resolve.

I tried weighing monthly, didn’t last, too inquisitive/nosey/impatient🤔
Weekly – best for me, someone suggested after the 2nd Fast day, I liked that idea and added to my resolve so i do that.🏵
Daily – works for some – mine went like this when I tried it
172.6,170.4,171,171.6,172,170.6,171.4,170.4,169,169.8,168.8 etc so it was all over the place but slowly moving in the right direction.

So my point it do the one that helps you stay on track, and do it the same time and same circumstances and you will get to see your progress more accurately.

However remember – exercise builds muscle🏋🏼‍♀️, muscle weighs more! Inch loss you can tell by tape measure or clothes👗👖.

    Hope this helps x.

    Day 12 Hampshire NFD

Day 12 Kent UK goal 4 lbs this month

Morning everyone, cancelled my fast day and 23/1 yesterday as temptation all around me on my visit to London with my Rock Choir. Avoided sugar so not too bad. It was an exhausting day with 4 hours travel and 3 hours singing.

Dinner out later so still doing 23/1. I don’t count calories just eat healthily.

Not weighing daily is very positive and a more realistic life goal. The proof will come at the end of this month but I would recommend that some of you try it.

Fasting Mon, Wed and Fridays, one meal. Other days one meal but more food, two courses. Lots of drinks every day, every hour minimum. Walk daily and dance, play bowls, swim and do yoga. Currently dedicated to 15 target waist whittling. 1 inch lost this month.

    Day 12, UK, FD.
Hoping I can smash this today and get my mojo backs
    Happy Sunday all.

    Day 12 – Brittany, France – NFD

Day 12 UK NFD a great hour catching up on all your posts- some great stuff.

    Day 12 – London – NFD

    Day 12 – USA (Illinois) – NFD

Yesterday’s CD was just fine. We’re due to get snow later today, so some things that were planned for tomorrow are reverting to today. I’m hoping to make today a modified FD at just about 1000 calories. I call that modified but not sure others would!

    Off to church this morning.

    Onward and downward.

    Day 12 – Cumbria UK – NFD

Good morning all – the thread has been very busy since I last posted – great to see.

OH is out running with his club this morning so a leisurely morning – nice cup of earl grey tea to get me going – a bit of tidying up around the house and sitting down with another cup of tea to read and update the spreadsheet – so here goes……

@coda – it does take a bit of an effort to catch up but so nice to be up to date with the postings and loved the advice you posted to @ciren2 – I was given very similar by a friend a couple of years ago about changing something about my danger-time/routines – it worked for me
@dykask – great reading your post about the good and not so good about life in Tokyo – fascinating learning about a culture that I know so little about – not a part of the world I have visited as yet!

@krisnia – it would be very helpful for me if you could keep your postings in line with the others – Today is Day 12 of the challenge no matter when you started and Tomorrow will be Day 13 and so on. Your first posting was on Day 8 of the challenge (8th March) – Day 9 – (9th March) was NFD, Day 10 – (10th March) was FD – Day 11 – (11th March) NFD and when you post tomorrow i.e 12th March that will be Day 12 – does this make sense?

@okeydokey – THANK YOU for your kind words – FYI I’m asthmatic too – since starting this WOL in January 2016 – I have now not had to use a ventolin inhaler for about a year and I have reduced my becotide inhaler from 2 puffs twice a day to 1 puff twice a day and am considering dropping to 1 puff once a day only (in winter I often had to increase to 2 puffs three times a day) It’s great that you have your OH doing this WOL with you too!
    @suse13 – WOW – 3lbs lost since 1st March – well done you
@august2024 – I don’t know what “life issues” is causing you to be very tired out and frustrated but remember you have this on line family for support and keep you strong – “Be strong because things will get better. It may be stormy now, but it never rains forever.” HUGS if required!!
@and… exhale – that’s the great thing about this WOL – a “bad” day is not a problem – just reset today!
@monkeydo – positive changes on those measurements shows you are doing something right – stay positive and strong the weight changes will follow
@lany36 – thanks for the update

@missj2002 – thanks for the link to Dr M’s new version but I’m with @dykask I find no calories FD works well for me and I feel good on them too. @micheleas makes some great points and in his new version Dr M interestingly now says ” ‘empty calories’ should remain strictly off-limits on fasting days. He advised: ‘If you are going to have lunch, have something like a nice bowl of hearty soup, or grilled fish and a decent pile of vegetables or salad.’

@jennferb – I have lost track of your FD – to ease confusion for the spreadsheet even though you started your challenge on 28/2 – today March 12th is Day 12 of the challenge an so on – I have you doing a FDs on 28/2, 2/3 and today 12/3 – are all the others NFD?? can you update me please on your journey xx

@pamie – no “rant” – lovely to hear that you had a great birthday – in my family we are the opposite – I eat meat but OH does not – as a result I rarely cook meat at home but will enjoy some when out – on the odd occasion I will cook a nice steak for me and OH will have fish with the same side dishes
@missymoomoo – no problem just keep posting and reading when you can – some great sharing goes on – I assume that yesterday was a NFD for you?
    @steffieagle – what a lovely day 11 you described
@fatrabbit – no problem – we all find what works for us and that’s what important x
@jojo58 – don’t know how you do 23:1 every day – I admire your strength and resolve and also in not weighing for a month – I do 16:8 on NFDs and water fast on at least 1 FD and usually around 400cal on 2nd FD and weigh weekly BUT this is the beauty of this WOL we all find what works for us.

Right the sun is now shining so off for a walk with a friend – enjoy the rest of your sunday or the start of it wherever you are.

“Love yourself. It’s important to stay positive because beauty comes from the inside out” Jenn Proske

    Day 12 – Germany – NFD

    Day 12 – Staffordshire UK-nfd

    Day 12 Belfast NFD

    Australia Day 12 NFD

    Day 12 Berkshire UK NFD

    Day 12, Germany, NFD

    Day 11, NFD

    Day 12 – Canada – NFD

    Day 12…..Florida….. NFD

Well, that took a bit of time to go through. I’ve had very little time since Fri. to catch up on all the post.
Friday was bit of a doozy for me, Fell of my FD and yesterday was not much better.
We leave in a few short days and I still have so much to do. However, Mon, Tues and Wed, will be FD because their will be no more until I return in a week.

This week, I did gain a lb but it is all my fault over indulged on Sun, then slipped off the wagon Fri. I will not be making 140 by Wed, which was my mini goal. So hopefully, I’ll make it by the end of the month.
But then the hard part comes, birthday weeks, my mil who will be with us on her birthday is March 24th, mine is the 28th, my best friend APril 1st, my first born the 4th of April and finally rounding the weeks off is my baby on the 16th. Each with its own cake!
So, my mother is a tad upset with me, however, it was nothing I did. It was more of her mental state. I get this call from my sister yesterday while at work, it was a warning so to speak. Apparently, as soon as mom woke up yesterday morning, she was hell bent on speaking with me. So, my sister did a little prodding and come to find out, I apparently borrowed money from her when I was 9 yrs old and she wants her money back. I told my sister to let her call, hoping it would help my mom in what my sister calls her junk yard dog personality.
So, she calls and WOW what a call. So, here is the story, when I was 9, I guess I wanted a new bike and borrowed $5000.00 dollars from my mom to get one. I in turn promised to repay it at $25.00 a month. To date, I’ve only repaid $60.00. Unless, she receives the full balance in 30 days, she is going to start the collection process. She contacted a lawyer and once she wins in court, I could owe her an upwards of 1.5 million including up to 1 year in prison. Then to top it all off, she has disowned me as a daughter, I am no longer welcome in her home and I’m just like the rest of the Stark family just a bunch of thiefs!
Okay, so I know that this is part of her illness but a couple things I can’t rap my head around is who in the heck are the Stark’s, why would she give a 9yr old $5000 and where in the world did she come up with 1.5 million and a year in prison?
I’m going to call her today and see if she remembers this…..
From what my sister says is that mom told her she was working the money off she owes her by taking care of her and once my mom is felling better my sister will still owe her a little under 6.5 million. The one good thing my sister did say is that Mom hasn’t disowned her yet……
In all seriousness, My sister and I both believe her condition is getting worse, so, we are going to have some hard decisions to make when I come home….

Well, that about it for me!

    Peace be with you!

    Day 12 – USA – NFD

Everything’s moving in the right direction except the scale! Today is my weigh day, and I gained .6 lbs from also gaining 1 lb. last week! Kept to 500 calories on FDs, eating 2x a day (16:8), although sometimes I went over at night to 16:10 or ate too early in the a.m., daily increased hula hoop rotations, increased time on recumbent bike, increased strength training sessions, walked the dog 30 minutes each day…feeling thinner and I look thinner (maybe it’s the haircut, lol); have not taken measurements yet, but convinced I lost waist circumference, so I’m not daunted by the scale this week. I am researching LCHF, but want to get all of the above under my belt first, as well as see if it will fit into my lifestyle since hubby is the cook, and an avowed carb junkie, haha. This is a marathon, so I’m going to keep on doing what works; it’s got to have a good result eventually!

    Day 12– NFD– Virginia 🇺🇸

    Day 12 – FIN – NFD
    Day 11 – NFD

    Weight today morning: 63.9 kg
I had expected an increase to Friday’s numbers (it was the morning after fasting, after all), but I admit a 1 kg gain and going over what I weighed on Wednesday is a bit disappointing. I have been feeling oddly bloated these past few days, so that might have something to do with it. But I guess I’ll see if this WOL will have any permanent change by the end my “experiment” (Easter).

I won’t be checking in next week because of my trip, so here is my plan for the near future:
    Day 13 – FD
Day 14-20 – NFD (I’ll only do 6:1 next week due to expected increase in TDEE)
    Day 21 – FD

    Day 12,Gozo, Malta, NFD

After a lovely lunch with the family I plan to eat something light this evening.

    Have a great Sunday everyone.

    Day 12 – NFD – Canada
    Off to buy prunes!

I’m exactly the same @lynzm but find it so much easier to live with the 5:2 WOL as I know I can then fast the next day, it’s like absolving myself of bad eating the day before! The longer I do it the more determined I am not to have such bad days. If I were on just a calorie controlled diet I would have fallen off and not got back on by now.

Day 12, Sunday — Colorado USA– NFD

Good morning, all you Fantastic Fasters!

Just finished “Lower Body” weight training & :35 minutes on treadmill (while desperately trying to catch up with all these posts!). I’m really enjoying working up a sweat while reading everyone’s story on this forum. Keeps me entertained while torching some fat cells (I hope!)

I’ve always been a “Daily Weigher.” Every morning right after hitting the loo, I’d step on the scales & log the # on my calendar. But I’m going to take a hint from others here (like Jojo) and not step on the scale again till the end of this March Challenge.

Since getting permission from Surgeon & Physical Therapist to return to exercise, I’ve really stepped up my workouts! In case it impacts my weight loss results, I don’t want that to mess with my mind. So I plan to carry on with my 5:2 + strength training + cardio….. And wait till the end of month before stepping on the scales again. Hopefully I will earn a very pleasant surprise then!!

    —-
I am striving for “PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION.”
And before eating, I ask myself, “WILL THIS GET ME CLOSER TO MY GOALS?”
