  • Day 5 – Canada – NFD

After church this morning my husband and I are going out for lunch with our son. I have already checked the menu at the restaurant and will have grilled fish and vegetables. I may treat myself to one glass of wine but have decided I will forgo dessert and perhaps have yoghurt and berries when I get home.

I have been weighing myself every morning when I get up – always at the same time. I find that after a fast day sometimes my weight will have remained the same but on the following day my weight will be down slightly. By weighing myself each morning, I find it helps to set my intention for the rest of the day . Of course that’s not to say the day will always go as planned….. Sometimes it’s a shipwreck!

@coda – I hope your father is comfortable not in too much pain. He is lucky to have your support as he goes through this medical crisis. Sending you a big hug.

    Have a peaceful Sunday everyone.

Day 5, UK, FD, B2B fast today and tomorrow.

No issue fasting, just wish I could stop going over TDEE on NFDs. My NFDs are definitely an issue for me.
@coda, sorry to hear about your Dad – sending good wishes to you.
@debster251 – like you, I too just want to see 10 stone anything. It’s proving illusive!

    Happy Sunday all.

    Day 5 – USA – NFD

Well, FD went well yesterday…I am waxing philosophical by saying I am learning a lot about mental stability through my 5:2 experience. After spending all this week adding tweaks to my routine (ACV daily, free weights, recumbent bike, hula hooping, weighing only once a week, 2 FDs just under 500 cals), I saw small increments of success. I can do about 20 rotations with the hula hoop. I think the large circumference of the hoop helps slow down the rotations and makes it easier than a smaller lighter hoop, IMO). Now the real work comes: consistentcy, making it a routine, keeping at it as I weave it into my daily life without thought. So I weighed myself this morning: 1 lb. UP. But I put my jeans on and they were looser! Honing my skills at these various exercises little by little will produce a good result. It’s just a matter of time. So the “mental stablity” I spoke of is this: I am riding the wave, not reacting in a knee-jerk, immature fashion. To me, that’s success!

    Day 5 UK NFD

    Day 5, UK, NFD

Jeepers Creepers, just realised am UP 1kg since 1 March. Trying not be too concerned – after all, 1 March was day after FD, and this is my 3rd NFD in a row (FD Tues/Thurs)… I’ve stayed pretty low cal today, as DH made a curry yesterday which we will finish off tonight…
I can definitely tell that my body takes longer to process that kind of food so I probably won’t get a true read until Tuesday morning now.

I might throw in another FD tomorrow just in case. Like others have said, FDs actually become easier than NFDs – since my rule is no food until tea time, decision making becomes a non-event for most of the day. Of course, it always helps to stay busy!!

I find this WOL so much easier than not just diets, but even my old way of eating. If I decide to indulge over Christmas or weekend, I just add an extra FD somewhere, accept that there won’t be any downward movement for a little while, and get on with it. In a lot of ways, I feel like it has given me back the power in my relationship with food. I can eat what I want when I want (although I also eat a lot less at those times that I would have before) and I know what the consequences will be and how to deal with them… and all of that is actually PART of the deal!

All the best to all of you. x

Day 5, USA, Missouri Ozarks, NFD

Today’s weight 141.8, Below Goal Weight of 145.

My birthday pink tulips with their shiny black stamens are fully open now on the breakfast nook table and look so cheerful which is nice as it is a gloomy, cool, windy day here in the Ozarks. Won’t be able to do any much needed outside yardwork but I have enough indoors to keep me busy.

    Wishing all the very best.

Coda, sending prayers and good wishes for your dad.

    Day 5 Maine NFD

@bert1802 – thanks you so much for your FL suggestions – we’re thinking, since it’s another cool, blowy day, we’ll take a ride inland. We’re in Ormond Beach for another 2 days, then down to Ft. Lauderdale – a 4 day cruise to Bahama’s & then our usual 2 weeks on Singer Island. We do this every year & stop & explore different Fl areas. My parents left us a place on Singer Island & I lived 9 yrs in Miami. So we meet up w/friends along the way.

Also, big thanks for the scale reminder today! I made the mistake of stepping on the scale today – usually only way after FD, & was up 2 lbs! The schnitzel from the German restaurant did not help the cause of losing weight last night. So, I was bummed, but resetting today to prepare for FD tomorrow. I know I can do better – need to realize that I don’t have to try a new dish at every new restaurant on our trip. There will be food tomorrow!! Plus, scale measures every bit of fluid retained…so will continue to drink water, exercise, eat smaller portions & stay away from scale!

Will read all posts again tonight. Make it a great day everybody!

2nd post – @coda – hugs to you & your family – so stressful – hoping the outcome is successful & your Dad can be comfortable. Be kind to yourself during this stress.

    Day 5 -Staffordshire UK-NFD

    Day 5,Canada,NFD

@bert so true about the scales!!

@coda, hope your Dad is recovering well.

@annemarilyn Congratulations on breaking that barrier-you go girl, we will be cheering you on.

    Day 5, Chester UK, NFD

Yesterday went ok, having dinner with friends I tried to keep to the healthier options and according to MfP, I was “only” 200 calls over TDEE. Damn those Gin and tonics at the end. We’ll see what the scales say on Tuesday. To compensate went on a long walk with the dogs on the pouring rain, 3 miles through the Welsh hills is a good workout. My goal for March is to lose 7lbs. Got a cruise in July and I will get into,my best dresses again.

Hello, I’m a new to this but excited at the challenge. Great idea and I’m hoping it works for me. Good luck all
Goal to loose 1 stone this month

Checking in to say Congrats to annemarilyn, a big achievement and hopefully a new set point to work off of… You go, girl !

@elektron saw this and wondered if it was of any interest. Dr M did a study on one of his programmes a couple of years ago, which came up with the same outcome. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3388628/Men-exercise-eating-women-burn-fat-scientists-reveal.html

    Day 4 Ireland NFD
    Day 5 Ireland NFD
FD tomorrow and I’m mentally ready for it! I’ve been trying to focus on 16/8. All through my life I have been a big believer in ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ and I would never had missed a breakfast, ever. That is until now. The more fasts I have completed, the easier it is to skip breakfast, and I definitely think it helps with slimming down.

    Day 6/FD/Australia

    My 5:2 journey
    September 2014 – 74.3kg ( BMI 29 – goal to reboot health.)
    April 2015 – 59kg (goal weight)
July 2015 – 54.5 ( lowest weight, not quite sustainable)
    March 2016 -56kg (happy weight BMI – 22.5)
January 2017 – 58.7kg (whoops, but still under my goal weight of 59 kg – BMI 23.4).
March 6th – 56kg. Lost 2.7kg since rebooting in January and joining the February challenge.

I follow the basic 5:2 plan of eating under 500 calories on FDs and focussing on healthy eating (no refined carbs) and gut health on NFDs. Keeping a food diary keeps me honest. If weight is up I can quickly find what hasn’t worked. I don’t count calories, nor track TDEE. I’m very mindful of not eating too little on NFDs so as not to upset my metabolism. I’m lucky I don’t have a sweet tooth and gave up sugar way back in 1972!

With this WOL I can eat whatever I fancy just in smaller portions. Yesterday I enjoyed roast beef with all the trimmings – yorkshire pudding, gravy, roast sweet potatoes and potatoes, kale, green beans and gravy with a couple of glasses of red wine, followed by gorgonzola, dried fruit and biscuits. Not something I’d eat everyday. Mentioned to illustrate why 5:2 is working long term for me. It is not a restrictive regime.

@coda. I’m sorry to hear about your father.

@dykask. Can I ask you why you check your blood sugar so frequently?

@fatrabbit and @bert love reading your posts

@at phew I was really flabbergasted with your weight loss since Jan. Thanks for the update!

Have a successful and healthy day fellow FDers.

    Day 5 – Bamberg, Germany – NFD

Day 5 – SW WA USA – NFD

    Making it a 16:8

Thank you to all the celebratory comments – Missymoomoo, Ciren2, BiddieV, AT, fatrabbit, In it to thin it & Linda Sue. Missymoomoo – as you work your way to it this year, we’re cheering you on as well.

AJCaroline – wish I could pop into church to hear your organ playing. I know SongBirdMe is involved in music in her church and probably others. It would be special to visit each of you in the various churches around the world.

Flourbaby – yes, FDs are a “time to do the things I procrastinate about, which means less anxiety about those things I haven’t done.” That really resonated with me.

dykask – about BMI – I remember some time back that the numbers/formula was reconfigured for BMI so more are over-weight than by the previous formula. Maybe the waist to height ratio is a better measure or reflection of health.

Metatauta – when the scale showed a gain, good for you for checking how your jeans fit.

Well I managed ny first FD without any problems – didn’t even feel hungry really until the next morning, but I was really busy that day.

The test will come tomorrow FD2 as nothing planned really, just altering a dress for a friend.

My plan is to fast when my husband is at work as he does 12 hour shifts, that way there is less temptation to eat.

Onwards and upwards – well downwards actually. Not going to weigh for a couple of weeks as i think that will affect my enthusiasm if I haven’t lost anything.

    Day 5 : Cheshire, UK : NFD

Overindulged today but I’m not concerned. Didn’t enjoy it and I’m not sure why I did it. Anyway, tomorrow is a fast day and I see that quite a lot of us are fasting tomorrow (Monday), can I put each of you in my pocket for support? 🙂

@fayefaye – have you tried Pukka tea and Teapigs. I have found a Health Food Shop that sell nearly every variety of Pukka teabags, mainly herbal. Try their website. Teapigs are a little more expensive but good.

@metatauta – yes would like to see your table of FD foods if you are able to post it.

    Cheerio for now 🙂 xo

    Day 5 – London – NFD

Day 5, Rocky Mountains, US, NFD

    Day 5 Virginia, USA NFD

Overindulged today too (birthday) but balanced my dessert with a cauliflower grilled cheese sandwich – the ‘bread’ made from cauliflower/mozzarella/egg. What a concept. Fasting tomorrow.

Good luck Sunday and Monday fasters !

Goldensun – let me jump in as well tomorrow is a FD for me too.

    Day 5, USA, NFD
Overindulged today (along with a few of you) in the afternoon, but will stop eating for the rest of the day and look forward to my FD tomorrow. Just realized when I’m nervous (had guests in the house today) I overeat my nerves, so the takeaway is to deal with the nerves when I have guest: (care less of the opinion of others and/or trying to please them all the time). In the words of my kids, I need to “take a chill pill” these times and relax.

    Day 5-Bamberg, Germany – NFD

Also fasting tomorrow! Hopefully it’s going to be better than the last one which ended with binge eating..😣

    Good night everyone!

PS: Sorry, I’ve accidentally clicked on “report post”, it wasn’t my intention!

THird and last post of the day, I’ll see you all on my third FD ever!!…

Thank you all for your replies, I am going to try different things and see how that goes!..

@songbirdme – Thank you, I just started working out again about a week and a half ago, dusted my fitbit and started doing 10k steps again, I’m a SAHM and I’ve grained a lot of weight in the past few year, can’t blame it on a pregnancy or the fact that I’m home all day.. will be 30 soon so my goal is to be 160 lbs before that. I was 184 lbs last December, started 5:2 Monday at 176 and have lost 2 lbs so far, I am liking this WOL and I want to do it right, trying to work out, walk, drink 80 oz of water a day and eat mindfully, not sure I’ve ever done all of it at the same time, seems like it’s getting easier with 5:2.

@fatrabbit – I thought maybe I was ok with 1500 because I’m not getting hungry but was wondering if maybe it would be a god idea to start adding back the calories lost while working out, that will at least take me up to 1800 Calories a day, and closer to my TDEE. I feel so much better even though I haven’t lost that much weight. This is the first week in a long time that I have something to look forward to, whether it’s the newly found WOL or the support group, I’m loving it! I wonder how he came up with 500, seems like it works for many people so he must be close to right!.. Thank you for your help.

@and… exhale – That is exactly what I did starting the 5:2, I hadn’t been working out for months so I wasn’t just making it up, other than walking around the house picking up after my toddler I was a very sedentary person and to a point I still feel that way…. have been overweight for a long time, now I’ve decided I am done feeling guilty every time I eat a piece of bread or have coffee with sugar and cream. 5:2 is something I can handle but don’t want to stress my body any more than I already have.. I’m going to up my calories and see how that goes. If I need to, I will go back to 1500.. So far I have more energy than I thought I would but this is my first week doing the 5:2 so I know I have some tweaking to do in the near future! Thank you for your reply!

Good luck to all of you fasting tomorrow!

    Day 5 Surrey UK NFD

Not a great day for me today, now feel very disappointed with myself. Ended up just over my TDEE as I couldn’t resist a cookie or two 🙈 I know I should have distracted myself but just couldn’t today. Am doing a FD tomorrow so hope I will feel better about myself after that.

I’m doing a FD too tomorrow, So I added myself to the list….. my tablet would not let me add to the bottom, so my apologies for being on top

    Hello All,

Party (OH’s 60 th)today was a strain, lots of puddings around and cakes. Made some good decisions and few bad ones. Good decisions only one glass of champagne then water all day and grated cauliflower instead of rice with fish curry. Bad decisions 2 very small slices of cake, mint chocolates, french bread-all these foods I usually avoid. Injured my back as well so moving very slowly and painfully. We will see how I feel tomorrow as to whether I need a break from exercise.

Roll on Monday, fast day planned.

@and… Exhale Thank you for the cheer! It really helps. I have settled in my new place and am as reasonably happy as I can be in rather turbulent times. Not what I expected but life seems to be having a plan.

When I did the 5/2 in 2013, within 4 months I reached my ideal weight. (Lost 16 pounds) I was ecstatic. I maintained it for 6 months then slowly the weight crept back on. I seriously resumed the 5/2 in Nov 2016 but this time the weight loss is very slow going. I want to see if joining the group will change that.

    Day 5 / Sweden / NFD

I’ll be fasting tomorrow as I usually do on Mondays so I’ll add my name to the list.

I’ve added my name to the pocket list for today

I accidentally deleted Orpheus and may not have spelled correctly when I wrote it back in sorry, posting on my phone and it’s temperamental so best I don’t fiddle too much and make it worse!

I’m needing to grocery shop today which I’ve never done on a FD. Will be a real challenge but hopefully stops me making poor choices at the last minute treat aisle, just won’t go down there at all

I’m feeling so much better about moving forward with 5:2 knowing I used to be thin and I can be again. I just need to incorporate some of my old eating habits and ditch the anything goes mentality that’s my undoing on NFDs.
In reality my FD are perfect, always well under 500cals and pretty simple
My NFD just need to be monitored and I have to be consistent with the scales for a while. Hiding from them isn’t helping.

Happy fasting today all my fellow pocketers and thanks to absolutely every single one of you. My weekend meltdown could have been my undoing completely but all your kind words and sage advice have given me the courage to stick with it. I’m so very grateful to you all 🙂

Almost forgot to tell you all. I had to run to the market this afternoon. As I was waiting in line to check out. I glanced over and saw a magazine called the 5:2 life style!

I would have bought it but they wanted almost 20 bucks for it!

    Peace be with you!
