  • Day 4 – Canada – FD

I have a busy day ahead and will fit in a good walk this afternoon. Big salad with fish planned for dinner tonight.
Lovely sunny day here, but quite cold.

@laddie10 – well done. Very impressive weight loss.

@In it to thin it – stay with us today and we will help one another have a successful fast day. @flourbaby, @fat rabbit, and @Metatuta

We believe we can – so we will

Day 4 country West Australia NFD

    Day 4– NFD– Virginia, USA

    Day 4– NFD– Virginia, USA

Day 4, USA, Missouri Ozarks, NFD

Today’s Weight 142, Under Goal Weight of 145.

Yesterday went fine, a friend sent a yummy raspberry Kringle from Wisconsin for my birthday so I had a slice or two of that last night. I removed some of the excess icing but the flaky, buttery cake itself was very good. I am not real big on sweets but it was a nice treat. I do notice that my hands are hurting a bit this morning (a touch of RA) which is a byproduct of the inflammatory products in sugar.

Got in all my exercise yesterday so actually got in extra being I did a lot of walking while shopping. Plan to do some yard work today if it isn’t too windy – need to clean out some of my probably fifty perennial flower beds !

    To your health, all.

    Day 4 – USA – FD

Greetings, fellow fasters! I’ve had sporadic success with my March checklist. I’ve been eating breakfast out of habit an hour after waking up; then by 10am I realize I was supposed to wait (10am-6pm 16:8)! Gettng a few more rotations on the hula hoop and I’m hoping to be able to keep the darn thing up for a time I can actually measure soon! Not having any issues with ACV; it’s tart but I like it with about 8 oz. of warm water. Still haven’t had the consistency I want, but determined to incorporate them into healthy habits. Made up a Microsoft Word table of foods I like for FDs, calories and whether they are for breakfast, lunch or dinner. If anyone would like to see it, I will figure out a way to post it. Thankful for all the comraderie!

Lany, I just caught up on posts and want to give you a hug.

There are good days and bad days on this program, just like life in general.

Take each day as an opportunity to treat yourself well, notice how good your body feels in response and repeat. There are days you will indulge but they will be in the minority, as they should be. There is another eating plan called NO S that I have been a part of for years and years. It is based on a book that calls for eating No S – No Snacks, No Sweets, No Seconds on everyday that doesn’t start with S (which would be Saturday or Sunday or whatever two days one would choose as their “down time” or Special days such as birthdays, weddings, etc. being careful not to make every time one sees a friend or family member an S celebration.) This is based on how many people grew up, not surrounded with three layer cakes and gallon containers of ice cream every day – these were special items for special times. They have a wonderful supportive website as well. It is not exactly total fasting on certain days but limiting the excess that has become the norm in society today. I was never a three day a meal eater anyway so the program didn’t really “fit” me as well as fasting does but the entire concept makes sense – we have become so afraid of being “hungry” that we (speaking in he global “we”) overeat unnecessarily.

My best to you as you travel this road.

Day 4 NFD St Louis US

Hello everyone. Hoping our journey goes well for all today. I’ve started doing a daily weigh in, as some on here are doing and found I was up 1.2 lbs today but suspect that is normal. Yesterday was a non-fast day although I stayed within my calories allotted for a non-fast day. I’ve started drinking 16 ounces of water before meals. Didn’t get my 10,000 steps in but got myself out for a walk yesterday I think I need to stay motivated to add more activity i.e. using the elliptical machine which is heavy and since I have a small place it means lugging it out. I guess I coulld consider that as exercise as well. I need to keep motivated to do my kettle bell workouts probably every other day would be good. Just haven’t had the energy so need to motivate myself mentally. One thing I am doing and I meant to mention it is to take time to do a morning meditation or mindfulness I take time to focus on something positive about the day and things I want to do to move forward. I see so many people mentioning The hula hoop. I didn’t realize that was a thing again. I do have a friend who uses it so I’m going to have to check with her. I haven’t seen one and some 50 years.

    Day 4-Wisconsin, USA-FD
Really frustrated today, because I ate well below my TDEE yesterday, drank lots more water and exercised. Scale went UP a half a pound. I have a baby shower to go to today and there will be lots of food and treats. My cravings are under control, but I’m not saying I won’t have something once I’m there. I’m what is known as a “social eater” and there is nothing I love more than being with friends to talk and share a meal together. I have always been told I “eat like a bird”. I do, it’s just the sweets and carbs that have put the extra pounds on me. I can barely finish a salad or half a piece of meat, but no problem eating 3 to 4 cookies, some chocolate candy, cakes or some brownies! I am down 7 pounds since Feb. 6th but now it’s so much harder to get the numbers of the scale to go down. I also have to work at getting enough fiber in me as well as more protein. This weight loss thing can be SO frustrating at times, but I have vowed NEVER to throw in the towel and think of the non-scale victories to get me through the rough patches. Hope everyone else has victories with their weight loss/inches lost today!

@lindasue – love the ‘No S’ idea – no sweets, no seconds, no snacks except for weekends (& holidays).
And – I love a good Kringle, oh my, I’d never had one before last x-mas visiting a gorgeous bakery and wow.

Mass/USA/nfd. Down another two pounds, and feeling good, but I am a little anxious that I’ll screw up and over do it today. Need to keep reminding myself how good it feels to be on the right track, and how bad I feel after over doing it. Need to take sometime to catch up on reading all the posts, so much good advice and support out there. Happy Saturday!

JoJO, Thank you for sharing all that information about fruit. The very best fruit to eat with the lowest sugar/fructose are berries. Specifically raspberries, strawberries and blackberries. I want to share a low calorie, delicious way I enjoy eating these with everyone. I pour a little bit of heavy whipping cream (1 Tbl is 50 cal.) stir in a packet of Truvia (made with stevia) and add the berries. I lightly stir (not crushing the berries) and enjoy! I would choose this over any ice cream any day! And berries are LOADED with antioxidants.

Hi, I have just joined. Is it too late to join the March challenge?

    Day 4 UK NFD

So yesterday I failed to plan properly and the inevitable happened….flushed with success with a 3lb loss for the week on Friday morning and having liquid fasted the day before, I decided to prolong the fast a little and broke it with a late lunch of a large salad including lentils, goats cheese and sesame chicken. Big mistake.

We were eating with friends that evening, four types of canape each to be tried and commented on, followed by 3 very substantial plated then served courses. Plus wine. i was done by the time the starter was over but was then in the, for me, highly unusual position of feeling forced to eat 2 more courses. I felt dreadful late at night and this morning, sick bloated and fat.

What Is should have done is extend the fast longer and not eaten til the evening or broken it as usual in the earlyish morning with a small slice of brown sourdough toast and peanut butter. Maybe not the best way to break a fast but thought of it keeps me sane during a fast.

On the plus side, I guess it shows my appetite and body’s expectations are wildly different from 6 months ago and I won’t be making that mistake again. Forcing that food down made me quite panicky and I dread to think of the damage I did to that 3lb loss.

The takeaway for me is that I can’t roll with the punches – planning is key!

    Day 4: Gloucestershire, UK: FD
How’s my little group of fasters today?

    Day 4 Surrey UK NFD

First weigh in this morning and I’ve lost 1.5lbs this week, woohoo so pleased with that and hope it continues. Lunch out today, had chicken & chips so a very light supper to stay within my TDEE today!

I’m so enjoying reading everyone’s posts, you all really motivate me. It’s great to be a part of a community of like minded individuals. Thank you Sx 😊

    Day 4 -Staffordshire UK-NFD

Recording everything on MFP is really helping me stay on track for NFD.

Well done to everyone for just keeping going, we all have good and bad days but the keeping going is what’s important.

    Day 4 Oman NFD
    FD tomorrow!

    Day 4 – USA – FD

@Ciren and my other fasters today – got in a more successful hula hoop session (20 rotations at least once!) today; delightfully distracted all morning which means I did not eat yet (it’s almost noon), so looking forward to a large meal later …we’ll see as the day goes on.

2nd post for today – been out most of the day so just a quick check in for now before I cook dinner – will then read more posts later and give feedback whilst updating the spread sheet.

@ciren2 – Glad that hug got to you – another coming your way to keep going on that FD!!
Everyone fasting today @metatauta, @mrsgettingthere, @reid, @ajcaroline, @elektron, @fatrabbit, @flourbaby, @In it to thin it, @jarbia, @mamacat, @1maureen an anyone else who has not logged on as yet – stay strong and positive – you have all got this!

@kerryj89 – never too late!! a big WELCOME to the 31 Day March 2017 Challenge – if you could read my first post on page 1 it will give you all the information about daily logging in and @coda has also put up a very informative post at the top of page 2 explaining the basics of the 5:2 way of life (WOL)

    Bye for now

    Day 2 USA Hawaii NFD
    Day 3 USA Hawaii NFD
    Day 4 USA Hawaii FD

trying not to let go of this WOL… not losing but not gaining and that’s ok for now.

@metatauta: keep at it, a great day for us fasters together. I’ll give hoola-hooping a miss though, I’d probably do myself a mischief at my age! Brisk walking is my exercise.

AT: Thanks for the next hug. I’m feeling strong today and WILL succeed, for sure.
    @fatrabbit @flourbaby @reid and ALL today’s fasters…STAY STRONG xx
    What a team!

    Day 3 – London – NFD
    Day 4 – London – NFD

    Day 2 – IL, U.S.A – NFD

@lindasue, thank you for mentioning the ‘No S’ way of eating. This was the way we used to eat in the past, no idea why we ever got into the habit of snacking and eating so much sweets. We did buy them ourselves, never really realised this.

    Day 4, Gozo, Malta, NFD

Yesterday fast day went well. It has been the first fast day for a long time. I went for a forty minute walk as well. I mean to step up my exercise as it is fairly non existent. Today I weighed at 0.9 kilos less than yesterday. Today was a nfd and I think I ate just within my TDEE. Hurray!

I do hope everyone is having a lovely weekend. Onwards and downwards.

    Day 4 – Montréal- NFD

I had a successful fast day yesterday (39h), with 2 portions of Jamie Oliver’s sweet potato & cashew nut soup. The scales are showing 81.4 kilos, a 5.6 kilo loss since 31st January when I started this WOL.
    Onwards and downwards!
Have a great weekend, I now have 5 days off and next FD will be next Thursday so I will try and be mindful during this time.

    2nd post

I have made it through most of my fast day am sitting here with a happy full belly after a bowl of bean stew. I finished my work at 4pm and all the volunteers had gone and I was starving because I forgot to drink any tea and was struck by a desparate need for food so rather than struggle to wait for my planned meal of mashed beans and salad after the animals are put away at 6pm I dived in and started cooking something else. This gave me time to drink some tea and gave me the satisfaction of at least smelling the food as I prepared it. I got creative with a bean stew that I have been making for years, adding cabbage and sweet corn to get above the five a day magic number. Between cooking that and doing the ever renewing mountain of washing up I made through until 5 when it was time to put the animals away, and so up to 6pm which was my planned meal time, 24 hours from previous meal. So crisis averted. And that stew tasted gorgeous. Waiting is the best spice of all! I hope my fellow fasters have been equally able to overcome difficulties today. Thinking of you @flourbaby @ciren2 @metatauta @reid @inittothinit @mrsgettingthere @Maureen1 @jarbia @mamacat @ajcaroline @maui and our supporter @at🙂 apologies if I missed anyone.

@Maureen1 I think you may be over doing it and making a mistake by trying to limit NFD calories to well below TDEE. There is no need to do that on ADF, in the trials people were eating 125% of it and still lost well. In fact you may hurt your efforts by sabotaging your metabolism. I make a deliberate effort to eat up to my TDEE on NFDs and I have lost more weight since doing so than I did when I was tempted to cut down every day in the quest for faster results.

@notmyrealname I know that lure well. Cheese is my bugbear, the reason I am not vegan. I had to have a firm discussion with myself threatening not to buy any more if I kept binging on it. And I know that is not an idle threat. I have a long list of banned foods that I don’t trust myself with. Crisps, nuts, biscuits, bagels, nuts… none of which enter the house anymore. To my amazement this worked and I am able to restrict myself to a bit crumbled onto my mashed beans.

@dutch it does seem unfair to be sick and not even lose a little weight:(

@dykask I suppose I am fasting all the time if you look at it that way. I have been known to take things to extremes. But it feels sustainable at the moment. (ADF with 18/6 on NFDs)

    Day 3 and Day 4 NFD – Wt 194.6

Day 4, NFD, Rocky Mountains, US

    Day 4|Toronto| CD-NFD
Winter came back! -15 C this am.

    Day 4 / Sweden / NFD

Saturday going well but I’ll probably go a little over my TDEE and I’ve been stuck at my desk correcting exams all day so no walk today. Must be more accountable to myself tomorrow.

    Take care!

    Day 4, NFD, USA
Staying very much in control today, but meeting my brother for dinner tonight at a very exclusive steakhouse, so may go over a tad. But, my goal is to be mindful of very bite and sip (one drink minumum, no dessert), as there will always be plenty of opportunities like this where food is in abundance. Freezing cold today on the East Coast — with the wind chill, it’s barely zero degrees F. Stay toasty everyone.

    Day 4 | NFD | UK

Final bithday treat today was afternoon tea with 16 ladies 🍰☕ great mix of family and friends,we laughed loads!
Will hit the reset button on Monday…

    Day 4/Sunday/NFD/Melbourne/Australia

Why we are all overeating. Did you know the area of plates has increased by a whopping 25% since the 1950s! We fill them up because psychologically empty space on the plate makes us feel deprived.

I vaguely remember the story of a lady who lost heaps of weight by buying a small plate and only eating the food she put on it. She even took it to fast food restaurants and asked for her meal to be served on it.

Sounds simple but I attribute much of my weight loss to changing the size of my crockery. Psychologically it helped and I hate counting calories.

    Day 4 : Cheshire, UK : NFD

    Day 1 – New Zealand – FD
    Day 2 – New Zealand – NFD
    Day 3 – New Zealand – NFD
    Day 4 – New Zealand – FD
    Day 5 – New Zealand – NFD

    2nd post day 4

Hey fellow pocketeers, I hope we’re all still going strong (I know it’s practically over!!), busy day today, hence, my FD has been relatively painless, so I mentally diverted some of the good vibes you sent my way (BIG thanks!!) to those who may have struggled a bit today……… stay strong guys, we’ve got this!!!

@lindasue, loving the NO S idea, I’ve never been a big snacker, just enormous portions & seconds (3rds, 4ths etc. etc. etc!!!!!!), However, I have been known to follow a meal replacement system…………unfortunately replacing a nutritious healthy lunch with 2 bars of chocolate, ½ tube of pringles and maybe a pack of biscuits!!!! Crazy times, especially since I love FOOD, and I mean real, home-cooked food too!!! Fortunately this WOL really does retrain the brain.

So true @fatrabbit, I liken eating below TDEE to stalling my engine, after Mega fat burning on FDs my body need to refuel properly and think ‘Phew, that lack of food was a one off’………otherwise, low calorie diets would work…….and we ALL know the truth about that now!!!

@august2024………Pretty sure I’d just freeze instantly into a slightly chubby shaped icicle!!!! I’ve never experienced that level of cold……and strangely enough…………………. I have no intention to experience it, ever; NEVER, ever, ever!!!!

@erikaa67……..had to chuckle……’one drink minimum’…………my kind of night out!!!

Good luck to those fasting tomorrow, I’ll be off to a kiddies birthday party mid afternoon so………cake & sweets……but no wine unfortunately……..I will NOT be THAT auntie!!!!

Day 5 Sunshine Coast Aus FD: 107.9 kgs

@jojo, you’ve no need to feel guilty, and I’m not the one with the injury. I haven’t used the Wii as I didn’t have a TV at the beginning of March and I have purchased a hoop. I’m hopeless at it so far but try several times a day. I’m enjoying it. I think it was fatrabbit who sustained an injury doing virtual hoop and I think it has settled.

Day 6, March 5. NFD. Syd Australia.
    Doing ok. NFD

Hi all uk nfd day 4

Still not caught up on all the posts.

For those that know, my Dad had to have another op to remove more of his tongue. The Dr thought the margin of clean tissue was too narrow but they felt they didn’t need to remove any lymph glands in the neck which is good news.
Sorry it is taking me longer to catch up but enjoying the enthusiasm. I will get there, hopefully b4 challenge ends lol.
BTW I have tried ACV but take it as a shot at the moment. 1 tsp in a little water and knock it back – over and done.

    Day 5 Tas Australia FD

Doing am unusual Sunday fd today. It just fits in well today so hopefully works out.

    Day 5 – Tokyo, Japan – NFD … 79.2 kg

I’m on the final part of my journey as far as losing fat goes. While it is difficult it is also probably the part of the journey that may have the most rewards. Things like getting to see one’s abs after 4 decades aren’t something many people experience. (I haven’t experienced it yet.) However the main reward is the health I now experience. It is like I have been reborn in some ways. I literally feel alive compared to what I felt a few years ago. That isn’t all from fasting, but I honestly feel that the fasting has cut years off of a very difficult journey. It is like I was fighting through the coldest darkest part of winter and now I’m walking in the late spring. Fasting is very powerful.

@happymargo – I really like your approach … Striving for Progress and asking yourself if eating something gets you closer to your goals. Things worth thinking about.

@coda – It sounds like you are going through a horrible time and it must be very hard on your father. I hope things improve soon.

@reid how are you going? I am finding today’s fast almost easy. It is the 1st I have been able to do on a weekend. Almost 5 pm and all I have had is tea, coffee and miso. Looking forward to zero noodles with homemade spag sauce to easily stay under my 500 cals today.

    @fat rabbit well done!
    @metatuta Yay you!

@flourbaby and @ciren2 -how did you make out today? Thinking of you all helped me stay the course today.

    Last post before bed…….

Hope all those doing a FD (aka the pocketeers) have been successful and those on NFDs have been mindful – I sort of have……OH took me to my favourite cafe for brunch to break my fast and I had a scrumptious egg benedict but only ate half of the sourdough bread that came with it and nothing to eat until my evening meal – homemade fish/seafood curry with dahl and a cabbage salad – OH’s request – no rice for me though…..but a couple of glasses or wine!!! probably over bit over my TDEE but was all very yummy.

@dykask – great post regarding fruit and sugar – very informative – personally I have cut down on sugar and avoid processed food but love fruit and still incorporate it in my diet although in limited quantities compared to what I used to eat………I do 2 x FD and follow 16:8 on my NFD but then I have never been one for early morning breakfast – I tend to break my fast around 1100hrs, sometimes later depending on how I feel…….

@songbirdme – I too love a glass of a good wine which unfortunately often means 2 glasses – but hey I don’t drink every day…
    @mrsgettingthere – I’m in Ambleside…..
    @lindasue – I like the “No S” idea
@maui – stay strong – perseverance will pay off
    @august – that’s a bit cold……brrr
@onahealthyhigh – at home I eat from a smaller plate and bowl as I don’t like counting calories on my NFD and I have it great for portion control!!!! every now and then I calorie count for a day to make sure I’m not underestimating my calorie intake….
@triplet – I did not have you signed in for the 31 Day March 2017 Challenge – sorry – but welcome on board – you are now on the spreadsheet! Join in the chat and share – we are a very supportive group as you may…
@jennferb – so as not to confuse me and others can you keep the day of the challenge the same as the date (even though you started your 5:2 journey on 28th February) – We’re all on the same day whether FD or NFD……i.e. today March 5th is ALWAYS Day 5, March 6th will be Day 6 etc. etc. etc. Thanks and it sounds like you are doing well with this way of life!
@coda – Your poor dad, having to have more surgery but at least the news sounds positive – Hugs

Update 144 have signed in for the challenge BUT 22 have not logged in as yet after their initial signing up for the challenge so we are really 122!

“Your body hears everything your mind says – Stay positive”

@at – When I consider the fasting I’m actually probably not eating any more fruit than I was before, maybe even less. Still I really enjoy fruit and the truth is if I cut it out of my diet I will have difficulty getting all the nutrients I feel I need. One of the main ones is potassium and I strongly feel that the extra potassium I’ve been getting has done me a world of good. Well it may be “all in my head”, that is were I have to live! 🙂

I have had huge benefits from avoiding refined sugar so in the back of my mind there is the thought about what if you remove all sugar. Frankly avoiding refined sugar is difficult, avoiding all sugar would actually be insanely difficult and probably unnecessary. It isn’t that our bodies can’t handle some sugar. It is just with modern foods we are way overexposed to sugar.

Also there are a lot of arguments about how we have fruit all year around now and that isn’t natural or how our fruit is so different than it was a thousand years ago. Those arguments mostly sound like nonsense to me. I spent a lot of time up on a farm while growing up and I really don’t think a lot of people really understand very much about agriculture. If anything we benefit by have more whole fresh fruit and vegetables. I remember well how we used to preserve things in the fall and were even eating them in the spring. Besides root cellars and drying we also used to can and pickle a lot. I loved canned fruit but wow, that was really sweet! One of my favorite desserts was some ice cream with canned cherries. The cherries we canned weren’t good to eat fresh but they were wonderful after being canned and in the jars for a few months!

Anyway preserving fruit is something that goes back thousands of years, although fermenting fruit is probably the oldest techniques. We did that too, but I just never really liked it much, at least not wine. However I have tasted a few ciders and brandies that almost changed my point of view. However I still don’t drink mostly because I like a clear mind. It is strange when I went back home last summer, no one drank alcohol anymore, even beer. For example my father is 84 and has lupus and giving up beer has been helpful for his health. It seems everyone had one health reason or another to avoid spirits now. Very different than when I was young.

So much for a clear mind! I can’t really stay on topic. I guess the point I’m trying to make is I have a LOT of basis in my thinking, probably from my own experiences. I realize that, but at the same time I’m not sure I’m completely wrong.

Second Post, thanks for the comments on NO S – there is a book available but I never really had to read it to get the concept. It is also known as “Grandma’s Diet” as that is how people used to eat.

Today was food filled but I think I did pretty well, wasn’t terribly hungry but did pick a lot. Had half a blueberry bagel with butter for breakfast, then had birthday company so there was gingerbread and fresh whipped cream which I only tasted, chocolate cake filled with chocolate mousse (I didn’t even taste) and more Kringle (had a bite). My daughter-in-law sent me photos she had taken by email and I think I looked a bit thin in the face, not a good look. Maybe when this lingering cold has finally moved on, I will gain back a few pounds. That will be easy, I am sure.

Made some healthy veggie soup this morning – corn, carrots, peas, green beans, onions, garlic, tomatoes with jalapenos, cabbage, black beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, etc. No meat, no potatoes, no pasta. It turned out wonderfully, had a bowl with a few Ritz crackers and it was very satisfying.

Also made a big pot of homemade chili – only tasted it for quality control but will eat some tomorrow for sure. Added extra pinto and kidney beans to this as well.

Had a great day water-wise, didn’t get in full exercise circuit but off to do a bit right now.

    See ya tomorrow !

My FD went really smoothly today. I could feel the power of being part of the Pocketeers. I had a big salad with a can of sardines, and an apple for dinner and that came in at about 420 calories. My next FD will be Monday.

My hula hoop skills have not improved this week. How can this be so difficult!
I will persevere and keep having a go next week.

@in it to thin it – like you,I found today’s fast pretty easy, yet I’ve had other days when I couldn’t get past noon before I caved and broke my fast. I’m glad your day went well.
@fatrabbit, @flourbaby, and @metatuta well done. You see, we CAN do this.

Day 4 – SW WA USA – NFD

Keeping it a 16:8. Wow – day is slipping by and finally am able to check in.

I’m so excited that I weighed in at 199.8 this morning. Finally seeing peeking into 100 something, rather than 200s. That’s 35.2 lbs that have bit the dust.

Needing to catch up on today’s posts.

Day 5 – Perth AUS – NFD (weigh in day)

    D1 weight: 68.0kg
    D5 weight: 67.4kg
    D31 goal: 65.0kg

Yesterday was a fast day and it either hasn’t had much impact on the scales or I haven’t lost much 😛 Will see next week, I guess! Tomorrow will be hard as it’s a long weekend here, so will be home instead of at work. Monday fasts at work are such a breeze. Seems like distraction from food is the key to success for me. Although my willpower has improved, I definitely need to keep working on it.

Might start doing HIIT before breakfast too. I remember reading in the Fast Exercise book that there was a study that showed doing exercise before meals reduced the test subjects appetites. And there was something about exercise at night not being as beneficial for women – which is when I’ve mostly been doing it! Might do a re-read and do a few more tweaks.
