  • Lany36 you don’t have to change an eating style that was working for you with 5:2. I had already figured out a diet before I started the 5:2 approach. I just added the two days of fasting a week to what I already was doing. However it sounds like you gained the weight you are tying to loss before starting 5:2. (I’m assuming you’ll been on 5:2 for six months.)

    Finally no one loses 2kg/week on real fat unless they have an extreme amount to loose in the first place. (Weigh over 200kg or something like that.) I do have days where my weight changes as much as 2kg but it isn’t due to changes in my body fat! Since Sept. 2016 until now I’m down about 7kg but that varies from day to day. That is only about 250g/week. (A bit short of 2kg/week.) Some people have a lot more some a lot less. It depends on a lot of factors. There are other things to measure:

    * How do you feel?
    * How are is your waistline doing?
    * How easy is the diet for you?

    If 5:2 doesn’t work for you, you shouldn’t feel bad. Just move on to something that does work. For example I often see people talking about a 4:3 pattern or even not fasting.

    I sincerely hope things get better for you!

    Day 3 – Montreal – FD

    @sirisan – many of us have said how cold we are on FD’s. It must just go with the body not having ready fuel is all I can figure. I wear extra layers and have a cloth bag filled with 2 pounds of rice I heat up in the microwave for my hands, feet, or whatever needs it. I also am sure to drink plenty of warm or hot fluids.

    Day 4 – Queensland, Australia – NFD

    (2nd post for today)

    Reading through the thread, I noticed people adding their starting weight and goals for the month; so here are mine:
    Starting weight:51.5 kg
    Goal weight: 50 kg

    Fast days: Monday and Tuesday until I hit my goal weight (or slightly under), then Monday only to maintain at 50 kg.

    Day 4 – Switzerland – NFD

    Happy to report that yesterday’s FD went swimmingly, although I did join the kids’ teatime at 5.30pm to eat my bowl of lentil dhal.

    I haven’t managed to extend my fast to a 16:8 on NFD yet, although that is my aim. Main reason is that I wake up so desperate for breakfast after a fast. I’ll see how it goes and work towards pushing that breakfast closer to mid-day…

    @lany36 – don’t despair! I’ve found that there’s something about fasting that helps me strip back the inessential and focus on the important things in life, so perhaps you’ll find some enlightenment there. I also found that talking to a counsellor really helped me sort my head out, as most of my food decisions were wrapped up with how I felt about myself and how life in general is going. Just stick with it and good luck!

    Day 4 UK FD

    I am feeling much better today and ready for the days work. I am really busy on Saturdays. It is actually much easier when it is a fast day as I don’t need to make time for food, I just need to keep drinking.

    I’ll be thinking of my fellow fasters
    @ciren2
    @flourbaby
    @metatauta
    and whoever else is fasting today. Together we are stronger:)

    @lany36 don’t beat yourself up for not losing as much as others here! Some of us just have more to lose and are going from eating Maccas three (or more) times A DAY (along with no exercise) to eating these things called “vegetables” and moving more 🙂 So long as you’re making progress toward your goal – no matter how incremental – I reckon you should take that as a win 😀

    Consider if it would actually be healthy for you if you lost as much as some here – or as rapidly as they have. If you’re already on the slim side… 🙂

    Day 4 NFD Sydney
    Craving old fav foods the past couple of days and have let myself have them – sometimes that doesn’t seem to effect my weight loss – hope this is one of them as I really want to get back into the 70s. I’m highly focused during the week on eating well whether it’s a FD or NFD, so a little enjoyment outside of that is probably good so as not to set up a denial reaction.
    Anyway will see what the scales have to say next.

    Day 4 – Linards, France

    Missed yesterday due to slight memory loss, in other words I thought about it when I got up, then completely forgot! Bad day yesterday. A night at the bar, lots of ‘nibbles’. Couldn’t help myself, kept dipping in. Although on the drinking front I had one small glass of red, an orangina and a hot chocolate (cup not mug). Came home and ate 1/4tube pringles 😫. Will I ever learn?

    Ah well today is another day. Onwards and upwards as the saying goes.

    Day 4 Hampshire. NFD

    So far so good but the weekend may be challenging because I have to have a FD on Sunday

    Second posting I forgot to mention in on a NFD today

    Day 4, Kent UK, NFD goal 4 pounds and slimmer waist.

    Good morning all,
    I will be keeping the rations light today as I am hosting a big party tomorrow. I won’t be indulging in birthday cake or puddings but will have curry and cauliflower rice. I am saying this now to publicly commit to resisting food in advance, it’s a useful tool because I am a woman of my word. It’s only one day and sugar is not good for me.

    I really miss daily weighing but am finding it quite liberating. Some people never get on scales yet control their weight, I would love to be that person. RESTRAINT not through denial but through good choices all the time.

    Fuvvie,
    Sorry about the (Wii)Hula Hoop injury, as it was my idea, I feel responsible. It sounds quite a tough workout. Maybe try a real one next. I haven’t injured myself and am making progress. A 70 year old in my active lifestyles class does it effortlessly, it’s an acquired rhythm. She can knit whilst hooping, seriously! She is very slim. Anything is possible. The twists I am doing with a kettle bell have left me sore but I can feel the good work being done on my core, my stomach is already flatter after 4 days.

    Flour-baby
    Like everyone here, I have made more than my fair share of mistakes on this journey but the most important one was lacking confidence in my own ability to do this, I can and I will is now my mantra.

    Dykask- fruit featured prominently in my diet in the past but is now cut to post meal pudding with yogurt as a treat at the weekend. The high sugar content has the same effect as sugar and will cause you to store fat, especially grapes and bananas. Fibre element is good but I found fruit slows my progress. Try sweet cherry chillies with cream cheese for a taste explosion. VEGETABLES ARE BEST, no doubt.

    Busy day planned, dog walk, Dance Class, then playing in a bowls match and a show tonight. Keeping busy is key to success, live your life don’t be a bystander.

    Have a great weekend guys

    Day 4 Glasgow NFD

    Day 4, UK, NFD.

    Overindulged on NFDs so I’m wondering whether to fast today as well as my 2 B2B fasts Sunday and Monday. I’ll see how that pans out and will update if I do.

    Have a good Saturday all.

    Day 4 Portugal NFD
    I think I may have missed checking in days 2 and 3 also NFDs
    Kids are off for half term so I’m out of normal routine and haven’t had time to check in, and sadly it has been more difficult to do FDs. Looking forward to Monday when I can really get my eye back on the ball. Will be mindful of what I eat over the weekend.

    Day 4, Newcastle UK, NFD

    Another decent NFD yesterday and definitely feeling slimmer at long last. Had a sneaky look at the scales and 0.8lb down on last Wednesday’s post FD weekly weigh in result. Slow and steady is how I would describe my weightloss journey and there is no doubt that this WOL is working for me. Watched some of Butter Bob’s youtube videos yesterday for further inspiration and I believe his advice to eat as simply as possible is sensible and takes some pressure off around meal planning.

    Let’s all stay stronger together and don’t allow the weekend gremlins to sabotage our plans.

    Day 4 / UK / NFD

    FDs are great! I had put off 5:2 for so long because I was worried I would be consumed by hunger, headaches, fainting and just wouldn’t have all my wits about me to get through work. But they turn out to be the easy bit for me. I have been getting pangs of hunger around 10/11am, (a drastically increased amount of) tea alleviates this and then it’s all good. Instead of a second soup before Zumba I had a generous salad afterwards. I felt and still feel so full that I can’t see myself having lost much, but so be it then.

    I’m moving house this weekend so won’t push myself to fast or to go out of my way for extra exercise. Might take the chance and change FDs to Mon, Wed, Fri from next week.

    Day 4 UK NFD🌈

    Going well, trying to focus on fitness this month. Doing my one song waist whittling exercises, any waist exercise for the length of any song. Doing well day 4 done. Also off to the gym, I say to myself just pop in for 30mins, always do a little more between 45 to an hour but it gets me there.

    Have a good focussed day all x

    Day 5 – Cumbria UK – NFD

    A good water/tea with a dash of skimmed milk FD yesterday – will break my fast later this morning as OH is taking me out to brunch at one of my favourite cafes
    Weight this morning 54.2kg so maintaining nicely below 55kg

    I don’t know if this will help those who are feeling cold on FD but I always drink hot water with lemon or lime instead of cold water in between my cups of tea – I find the hot fluids help…….

    @ebell13 – it’s nice to have something to aim at – your hike/climb for Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, AZ) looks good – I googled it – a bit different from the terrain we have here in the Lake District in Cumbria UK
    @ciren2 – I have you today – will send you regular messages during the day – 1st hug!!!
    @flourbaby – thanks for reminding everyone – it does help to have the information handy at the top of each post when I’m updating – and I’ve thinking of you and the others fasting today x
    @steffieagle – thanks for the information re your cleanse drink – I might give it a go on – I’m going shopping today so will pick up the ACV which is the only ingredient not in my store cupboards
    @lynzm – thanks for the update – great work by all in the February Challenge – you did a great job pulling us along
    @onahealthyhigh – what a lovely positive post and I love your words about our bodies and health being the driver
    @micheleas – Welcome on board – never too late – I don’t run but I find I can go for walks and do my yoga/pilates or aerobic class on FDs with no issue
    @lany36 – some great and advice from he forum to you and I love Dykask post to you – great advice! Remember it’s not a race it’s a journey – STAY STRONG Repeat after me: “I CAN DO THIS”

    I’m off to have a shower and get ready for the day – Positive Vibes to all those on a FD today and Mindful Eating to those on NFDs.

    TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER

    Day 4 – Californian currently living in France – NFD

    Nooooowwww I see how tricky those darn FD’s can be! My first FD, I came in at 390 cals and felt great! Yesterday was FD 2. I hit 500 calories around 7:30pm, but then convinced myself that since we were having dinner with my father in law, another 200 calories worth wouldn’t hurt! So 700 calories it was.

    At what point do you stop calling it a fast day? Is it the moment you go over 500 cals or the moment the guilt starts to set in? I’m mostly kidding….

    Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! 🙂

    Day 4 Belfast NFD
    Official weigh in day: 157.25.
    Just a very small loss, despite successful fasts and controlled NFDs. During February I cut right backsugar and carbs and my goal for March is to be sugar free, which so far is going well. Alcohol consumption is very low – haven’t drunk anything for 2 weeks and don’t intend to until the 23rd March when I have a trip to NY with my girlfriends, and my exercise levels are the same. So I shall pick myself up and try to jump off this plateau. At least the scales were down a little. My goal is to get to 10 stone anything…. which means I need to lost 4lbs this month.
    Am still stuck at five rotations with this pesky hoop…. onwards and downwards, and round and round and round….!

    Day 4, Lancashire, UK, NFD

    @jojo58 – I’ve actually done some research into eating fruit. There is a lot of speculation around the sugar in fruit but there is also evidence that supports that the sugar in fruit isn’t a major contributor to insulin resistance. For example: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00874341

    There are other factors to consider to and that is the health of gut bacteria. In “Good Belly Bad Belly” Brad Pilon goes over much of the research and whole fruit and even real fruit juice reduce endotoxins that cause problems with gut health. Basically he has ended up revising his view on fruit juice and now thinks the health effects are worth the sugar. This position only applies to pure fruit juice and whole fruit. It appears that fruit actually encourages a rich diversity of gut bacteria. This is another area that is more on the cutting edge. There is also some evidence that having a healthy gut bacteria may be more important than avoiding fructose on overall health. The problem with refined sugar is it is generally in the foods that have negative impacts on gut health.

    Finally it is only partly true that the sugar in fruit is the same as refined sugars. In general the ratios of monosaccharides sugars is generally very different than close to 50/50 mix we generally have in refined sugars. The actual ratios vary by fruit, but in general fruits are very high in fructose (the generally toxic sugar) compared to refined sugars. That sounds really bad, but there is evidence that the fructose from fruit isn’t so perfectly absorbed. On the other hand, in processed foods the large amounts of glucose without other inhibiting factors like fiber seem to enhance the absorption of fructose. Again this is an area that there probably hasn’t been enough research, but in the case of fruit it appears the unbalanced ratios may actually reduce the amount fructose that is actually absorbed. Fructose Malabsorption is actually a medical condition that can be a problem in some people.

    In the end there is a lot of conflicting information around fruit and much of it isn’t based on sound research. It is an issue that it is possible to make a case on either side and even the experts often have a difficult time taking a position. https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/sugar-obesity-fructose-3/ (Mid way he waffles on his position on fruit)

    Now this is antidotal, but I’ve experimented on myself. I’ve found if I eat ice cream two days in a row now after avoiding refined sugar, many of the hunger problems I used to fight return. I cut the ice cream and the hunger fads out. However replacing ice cream with even more fruit (calorie-wise) doesn’t have the same impacts on me. Further more when I cut refined sugars I started to lose my belly fat but the amount of fruit I eat didn’t seem to have any impact on that. Now that I’m down to less than two handfuls of fat on my gut and maybe it is time to cut the fruit. I’m still experimenting.

    Finally, while this has nothing to do with fructose, my fruit heavy breakfast is the meal that has the least impact on my blood glucose. I don’t know if that would be generally true for everyone or it is just how I function. There is a lot of fiber in my breakfast, probably more than most eat in a day. Anyway blood glucose is easy enough if sometimes slightly painful to measure. However the necessary supplies aren’t cheap if you make frequent measurements. I have bruises on some of fingers now for measuring blood glucose.

    Day 4 – Brittany, France – FD

    Pleased to say that I was disciplined enough this morning to do my half hour on the exercise bike as soon as I got up! If the weather holds up I’ll go out into the garden this afternoon and help my husband clear up an apple tree that fell over in a storm in January.

    Day 4, Germany, NFD

    Day4-Germany-NFD

    Yesterday I could not keep on with my fasting 🙁 my next FD will be on Manday. I am going to do my fasting for the first time on a regular base. I remember one of the members here said she/he always has had the fasting on two defined days of the weeks and this regulates the body system and makes fasting even easier.
    Happyyyyy weeeekend 🙂

    DAY 3 – UK – NFD
    DAY 4 – UK – FD (I hope)

    Busy day NFD yesterday – so forgot to post. Out with friends for delicious lunch,
    this morning had only put on 6 oz.! So delighted with that.

    Out tonight – host making a Chilli – I hope to have only a small portion (I!) – I am just about to go for a short run (can only do v. short runs) but it may help me keep within my fast day 390 cals. I know this is cheating, but am off away for a few days, and fasting will be difficult. Best laid plans and all that – I am supposed to be doing 4-3 or AD as suits me, but life is getting in the way!!! Ho hum – will still do my best, and hope that in quiet periods I can adapt and get back on track. Before this WOl I would have “given up” now I can accept that there will be awkward times, where I have to step off the bus, but now I know I can climb back on and keep moving again – I am still in control and it feels great. I was below 10 stone on Day 2 – first time for 2 years, now a few ounces over, which I know I will get off before the end of the month!
    (Another good night’s sleep so am feeling VERY positive) Excuse the ramble – I need to get this down, so I can re-read it when a black cloud comes along!!! xx

    Day 4, London, UK, FD

    @jojo58…………More power to you, love the mantra……..I might borrow it for the hard Fasts!!! ‘I can and I will!!!!

    @lynzm………Fab-Feb results are in and we seem to have lost a couple of people……..inspiring, we really are stronger together!!!

    Thinking of my fellow pocketeers for today as below,
    @flourbaby
    @ciren2
    @fatrabbit
    @metatauta
    @reid
    @at – (cheerleading from the sidelines on a NFD)

    We’ve GOT this!!!!

    DAY 3 – UK – NFD
    DAY 4 – UK – FD

    Day4 Berkshire UK NFD
    Well, started the day with a baked bean toasted swhich plus small slice of pizza left over from last night. Not good but am now stuffed!
    Needless to say shall not be eating until dinner this evening. Still under control even if it doesn’t sound like it!!

    Day 4 Chester UK NFD

    I’ve hit the big challenge for me – the weekend. Tonight we’re having friends round which means wine and more wine! Last week I did two fast days and kept well within TEE in anticipation of today. My plan is to do tapas so I can have a large salad, avoid carbs (no patatas bravas😩)and pick on the proteins. Hopefully no one will notice I’m not eating as much as them.

    My OH has just asked if I want to go to my favourite vegetarian restaurant for lunch. I’m now obsessing on the plum and almond cake they serve. Temptation get behind me!

    Day 4 – Oxfordshire UK – NFD

    My fast day yesterday went well. I made it a liquids only day.

    Did anyone hear Lord Falconer on PM at 5 pm on Radio 4 last night ? It was about 5.45.
    He is the politician who lost 5 stone in 2012 to 2014 by firstly trying 5:2 but then adapting it to his own version. He has maintained his loss. It’s worth a listen on I-player.

    Day 4 – Munic, Germany – NFD
    🙋

    Day 4 – CARDIFF UK – NFD

    Starting Weight : 165.5lbs

    Today’s Weight : 162.8lbs (2.7lb) March Target 8.5lb

    Having trouble posting at the moment – keep losing posts.

    Good luck everyone today

    Day 4-Bamberg, Germany – NFD

    Day4 Maine NFD

    Good morning all! Ate a little over TDEE yesterday, so will be more vigilant today. I know I can do better! Had a fabulous 3 mile beach walk yesterday – zipped along – until I turned around to return in the around 30 mph wind! That was a workout!! Could barely catch my breath!

    Again not a beach day in sunny no. Florida, so off to explore the area. I’ll catch up on the posts later…

    Make it a great day everybody!

    Day 4 USA (Illinois) – NFD

    Yesterday I ended up eating over TDEE for the firs time in ages, but know it was that 2nd glass of wonderful “19 Crimes” Aussie shiraz that did it. I had to finish the bottle!

    Off to judge music contest – singers, soloists and small groups. I’ve done this for years, and I love being a supportive music teacher again for high school students.

    I’ll be sitting all day, so will try not to over eat with the snacks and treats they bring around for us judges!

    Onward and downward!

    Day 4…… Florida……NFD

    SCS….. the weather has been a up and down lately in Fl. I know that going to the beach in this type of weather isn’t much fun. Have you and the family thought of visiting some of our state parks? Also, traveling an hour to my side of the coast is a beautiful wildlife park, lots of walking, tons of beautiful wildlife plus you could meet our official Fl resident he’s a hippo! It’s in Hommosasa, Fl. Just google Hommosasa wildlife park.

    Lany….. I’m sorry your having some trouble this week. When I struggle, I try to fit in a semi FD about 1000 calories, just to get my head back in the game. Don’t worry, We won’t leave you behind, the wagons waiting for you!

    Today is a NFD for me, plus it is official weigh in day too. This morning, I’m sitting at 144.8lbs. I’m not sure but I think no soda, no snacks and the ACV drink may have contributed to this week. Considering on March 1, my weight was 148.8. Very intriguied about what next week will say, if I continue with what I ga e for Lent and ACV.
    I would love to see the scales at 140lbs, when I leave for home in 12 days….. okay, I maybe pushing it a little. I guess, we’ve got to give a little credit to wishful thinking…. lol

    Well, I’m off… I have tons of crap to do today….. A normal Sat. In my life!

    Peace be with you!

    Day 3: yesterday NFD, Az, USA
    Day 4: today FD, Az, USA

    Day 3 USA FD
    Day 4 USA NFD

    Yesterday was the first time I forgot to check in since Jan 1st!

    Here is the cool part – I am so used to this WOL that I just keep track in my head now – I mean, I do write it down in my calendar whether it is a FD or NFD but I have officially moved to a place where I am not obsessing about this. That is an unexpected result that is really awesome! I have made the changes that I started in Jan and now am on autopilot! Hurrah.

    Weighed in this morning – total loss since Jan 1st – 14lbs. Started at 153.6 – today 138.6.

    Stay strong everyone!! I can truthfully say the FD and controlled NFD get easier and more automatic the longer you stick with this.

    Day 4: Glasgow, NFD.

    OK, so I did two fast days in a row (Thursday and Friday), I’m not fasting today, and I intend to move on to alternate fast days, starting from tomorrow. The two fast days seem to have nudged the scales down a little (I’m now 10st 2lbs), and I’ve got four weeks left before I go on holiday. I don’t find the fast days difficult at all (which is a huge surprise!), but near the end of the 2nd fast day, I felt cold, lacking in energy and hungry – and a bit sorry for myself. Hopefully, the alternate day pattern will be more comfortable. I feel very positive, and determined to continue for the whole of the March challenge – I hope all of you out there are doing well, and are experiencing nothing but good news from your scales readings!

    Day 4, Canada,FD

    @reid
    @Metatuta
    @flourbaby
    @fatrabbit

    Good morning fellow fasters -I’ll join you today. Unexpectedly have to work this morning and appts this afternoon will keep me busy and away from the fridge so FD should be easy. Hope I don’t jinx myself by saying that.

    @frogs777 I have to keep all temptations out of the house. Those Pringles would be calling me too. I’ve been known to throw perfectly good food into the trash or feed it to the dog so that I don’t eat it.

    @Lany- think of this as a resetting time. You are taking stock and sorting out what your new successful WOE will be. I know my metabolism changed drastically when I hit age 40, can no longer eat the way I used to or lose weight quickly. Felt like my body changed drastically without telling me, lol. Please don’t waste your energy with being angry with yourself.

    Day 4, Cumbria, FD
    I’m attempting a Saturday fast!!! We’ll see how it goes 😊 good luck fellow fasters x
    At- I’m in Carlisle xx

    Day 4 – NFD – Canada
    Headed to a yoga class this morning, and then am going to ‘stick’ to 16:8 and only one glass of vino tonight. Am thinking if I am sensible 1/3 or 2/3 days of weekend (F-Sun) I can push weight loss back down in a significant way. My tummy has recovered from excess iron tablets, am now just taking one/day. That will have to do. I wish everyone a wonderful weekend!

    Second post today

    @dykask- I am following your progress with great interest. How do measure your glucose levels and how often do you check? I think I must be having wild swings in glucose levels as i will sometimes fall asleep 20 minutes after eating a piece of bread- just can’t keep my eyes open. I think I need to start monitoring these events and avoiding.

    @skinnylove good luck with the move thus weekend!

    I’m thinking about two things:

    1) Skipping my breakfast and the fruit for a week. Just to see what effect it has. However, it is my favorite meal, so I’m on the fence. Also If I do this I’d be fasting for most of the week, 5:2 + 16:8 on NFD. Seems a bit extreme.

    2) My wife and kids may go visit her mother for a couple days during the end of year school break. (In Japan the new school year starts April 1st.) Maybe I might try to work in a multi-day fast.

    Day 4, Dunsborough West Aust , NFD
    Nothing of note to report.

    Day 4, UK, NFD.

    Fell victim at lunchtime to the lure of mature cheddar cheese… dammit. Guess I’m aiming for a very light tea!

    Day 4 — Colorado USA– NFD

    Thank you, Fellow Challengers, this morning I’m a sweaty mess!
    Had so many posts to catch up on, decided instead of reading while reclined on the couch I’d put on my trainers & hit the treadmill. Cranked it up to a steep incline & brisk pace… 🏃🏽‍♀️45 minutes later, I am panting, sweating & thoroughly motivated!! 😃

    SCS– I’ll take a cue from you & have a frank sit-down discussion with my pouty toddler, I mean, OH & work out a plan that 5:2 will work for us both. You guys here are all great, but a little extra support on the home front would be nice too. (Thanks, FlourBaby for that LOL).

    —-
    I am striving for “PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION.”
    And before eating, I ask myself, “WILL THIS GET ME CLOSER TO MY GOALS?”

    Anonymous

    Day 4- Netherlands . NFD
    Yesterday turned out to be a FD. Caught a bug somewhere and was feeling lousy. So after throwing up a couple of times and no food I’d expected the scales to be very friendly today…alas…….absolutely NO change in weight. Oh well….NFD today at 68.8kg
