Day 8: NFD, Day 9: NFD, Pacific NW USA
Hello Everyone, I’m re-surfacing after being under covers and missing work for a few days. Still not perfect but did get out for a stroll today. Better for it but exhausted. Don’t know if I can catch up on last 10 pages or so but know I have missed good news from you all. I’ll try again tomorrow.
Later in my second fast day in a row and I’m feeling better. The edge has faded. In my case when I start to feel the edgy hunger if I just climb a few floors of stairs or even hold a squatting position until my thighs are burning, my hunger will dissipate faster.
One thing I have noticed is that the day after a fast my activity tracker always logs about 15% to 25% more calories. Today I’m fasting after a day of fasting and my activity tracker is running about 20% ahead of normal. My activity tracker is Felix 3 HR and uses wrist optical heart rate monitor. Those tend to lag a lot for exercise but are very good for low activity levels. The heart rate is used as a proxy for how many calories are being burned. So it means my average heart rate is higher. Right now after taking a shower it is running around 75 bpm, typically I’m in the 60’s. So this is probably a hormonal effect of fasting. My body is literally running at a higher rate. While I’m sure it varies a lot throughout the day, it is interesting and tends to support a lot of what people like Dr. Jason Fung talk about.
For the record when I first ran across Dr. Fung’s blog I thought it was crazy and sometimes he does make statements that can be taken as a bit extreme. However all in all the sum of what he says seems to be completely true, at least for my body. I certainly believe there are people that fasting won’t work so well for and people that do better with the standard eat less move more approach. I’m just not one of those. So a year ago I thought fasting was insane and now I might do 100 days of it this year. But I guess I need to get to 10 days first.

Quick question – is there a link for us to view the spreadsheet @fuvvie
Day 9. Quebec. FD
Erika45. Thank you for mentionning the Fitness Blender. I’ll give it a try.
My first real FD since I came back on this train. I ate a one egg omelette and a small piece of bread this morning because I knew I had to go through a demanding day and the temperature was around -20 C all day so I really needed some fuel to get myself going.
Surprisingly I noticed around 4:30 pm that I didn’t feel hungry but I was tired so I made de dΓ©cision to eat a clementine and a small piece of cheese, it was so cold walking outside ! Eating helped me.
Coming home, I drank a small glass of red wine, not the best idea I know but it was good for the morale. All in all, I managed to stay around 500 calories.
I absolutely prefer FD to NFD. So much easier for me.
Good luck to you all, we can do this.
Day 10 – Perth, W.Aust – FD
Woohoo, another fast day, they come round rather quick. Good day so far, dog got her usual walk, I got in my bike ride and have taught a seniors movement class. Breakfast and lunch have totalled 300cal, so still 200 to go for dinner. Another warm day here in Perth, so drinking extra water is not a problem.
Day 9 — Colorado, USA– NFD
(Not sure where my post went earlier. Oh well, a re-cap of the day.)
Met a friend out for breakfast. It was tasty & hearty eggs, ham & grits. Plus, a bloody mary.
I usually don’t even eat breakfast, so this giant meal kept me *stuffed* through a very busy day all the way up till dinner. Just had some thick butternut squash soup & banana pudding for dinner. Went over TDEE (almost all those calories were from that breakfast out!)
Had a fantastic strength training session. Able to move heavier weights with squats & shoulder presses. Others held steady, but able to increase number of reps.
Then did some major house cleaning, including moving some furniture around. Really worked up a sweat.
Day 10– Colorado, USA — FD
Haven’t managed a full proper fast since my 8 day stretch ended. Have been enjoying eating again so much! Exceeded TDEE over weekend + Monday, so now finally feel like I’m back on balance & ready for my next regular 36 hour FD.
Aiming for liquids all day, then a light, less than 500 calorie dinner.
I lifted heavy weights on Monday, so Tuesday will be cardio. Long walk with my doggy & cycling too. Plus, more plans of housework to tackle! Trying to knock off as many projects from my To-Do List before returning to work as possible.
UK day 10 NFD wow a 1/3 through already! Good FD yesterday aiming for balanced NFD today so I am prepared to go into Wednesday for another good FD.
Ciren2- hang in there, you’ve been strong and supportive for many of us in the past, just try and ride the slump out I’m sure you’ll be back and raring to go soon x
Day 10 – Wellington, NZ – NFD
Finished my posting today, start a new role tomorrow. FD yesterday went well, NFD today was fine with only about half my TDEE consumed, and I will do a FD again tomorrow and Friday (so 4:3 this week). Feeling good, good exercise too.
No scales or tape measure here, but I’ll check again in the weekend when I’m home!
day 10 – SW England – NFD
its 9am and I’ve had 2 pieces of stollen, a small bowl of porridge with a big dollop of honey, and 3 sea salt crackers. Can’t seem to stop eating!! need to rein this NFD in before it goes totally pear shaped.
had a good FD yesterday, almost exactly 500 cals and had a good fast 2 mile run on my lunch, 8.45 miles so pleased with that.
thinking of everyone today whether it’s FD or NFD!!
@fuvvie – thank you so much for keeping the spreadsheet updated – totally forgot my weight in Friday – 68.1kg so 0.9 KG lost π
Day 10 Belfast UK NFD
Had a great FD yesterday with about 10 cals to spare. Went to swimming class for the first in 3 months – it was tough but felt great at the end and I have that lovely ‘light’ feeling this morning, which I haven’t felt for a long time. Am having new work surfaces put in my kitchen, so the hob and sink is out of order for a couple of days, so I’m afraid it will be a take away for me tonight and tomorrow!
Jarbia I envy your running. Used to do a bit myself, but am on the list for a hip replacement now so it’s a no no. Did a few triathlons a long time ago, and would have loved to have tried another, but sadly not to be. Am going to look at spin classes. I used to do body pump and spin, but quit the gym, so am looking forward to a new challenge. @erika45 what is fitness blender?
@august2024, ANAIDE and Fuvvie thank you so much for the links and quote. Quite inspirational.
MadamOfMayhem, no I don’t usually eat breakfast any more. Despite growing up with the idea that it is the most important meal of the day, I find I’m not hungry and can manage my calorie intake better if I postpone eating till at least 11 or 12. So I guess that makes my NFDS 16:8? I only started that in October, but I’m sorry I didn’t do it a long time ago.
Finally @Ciren 2, I can’t say anything better than all the others have already said so very well. Sometimes the scales just reinforce our negativity. The ‘whoosh’ link may help. You’re a winner just by embracing this wol. Don’t give up!
Day 10, FD, New Zealand. Second post of the day, just to say that I did it! I’m back on the FD wagon! Cruised through my first fast day since about Dec 21, and it was great. Even the very loud tummy rumble during a meeting at 4pm was laughed off. Ate 500 cals this evening. Might even do another FD tomorrow. Tonight I’ve prepared granola, muffins, tomorrow’s dinner, and even frozen berry iceblocks – all good options for various times of the day, both FD and NFD. I find it so much easier to plan ahead. Planning allows me stick to 5:2 rather than make rash decisions. (For those in NZ, I use Fresh Start cookbook by Nadia Lim – all the recipes have the calories next to them, and they are so delicious.)
I can’t remember who posted about negative vs positive thoughts, but that stuck with me, and as the day progressed I gave myself a little congratulations at having succeeded getting back with this WOL.
Day 10, London, NFD
My FD yesterday did not go well: I slipped in the afternoon when someone brought cupcakes from the Hummingbird bakery to the office (yes- again!).
So will try again tomorrow, i.e., plan to fast wed and fri this week.
I should also start tracking calories on NFD again- I stopped and – lo and behold – so did the weight loss.
Still, there are 3 weeks left of this month- hoping to be able to get better at tracking/ not snacking, etc.
Well I’ve basically made it through the second FD in a row, still I’ll have to see if I can sleep tonight. I plan on breaking my fast in the morning, probably just over 60 hours. The second day was a little rough in the morning and I’m a bit hungry right now. However I think it is manageable. At some point I would like to do an 80+ hour fast, but not right now. Next Monday I’ll go back to my pattern of fasting on Monday and Friday.
One thing that bugs me is I seem to be losing too much fat in the face while there is still some around the waist. I wish the belly fat would burn off first!
Day 10……Florida…..NFD
Today is a NFD, but adding something, I’ve never done. I’m going to track my calories. I’m not doing it to lose weight faster but to stop some of the mindless eating, I do on these days.
So, one of the ways I keep myself motivated is I watch tv shows, YouTube videos and read articles regarding people losing weight. Well, last night, I ran across something that made me giggle. A girl went from 252lbs to 180lbs in 9 months…… congrats to her!
What made me giggle was the 45 min rant she did regarding the type of food everybody should eat to lose weight and the foods that are unexceptable to eat. How you need to choose between hanging with friends and family or lose weight because you can’t have both.
The reason for the giggle was that she had given so much up for those 70lb, in the end is she really happy. Why is it that so many people believe that they must give up to lose. I don’t want to give up to lose, I want to gain to lose.
I have a point hold on… I’m getting there.
She gave up, her favorite foods, dinners out to fancy restaurants, days and nights out with friends, nice glass of wine and more.
Now, she’s stuck, doing hours and hours of exercise, eating those foods, nothing as she said that comes in a bag, boxed or wrapped. Nothing processed or the sugar, salt, fat over this. Just so those lbs don’t come back to her. Is that any way to live out the rest of your life?
Now my stats are not that impressive only 11lbs in three months with 2lbs that bounce back and forth. What have I given up…. not a damn thing! What have I gained… energy, focus, friendships, love, support…. shall I continue?
The point? We all can lose weight…… but more importantly, rather than giving up we’re learning how to rethink the food we enjoy so very much! We all will reach our goals in may take longer then we’d like sometime but we will get there with out giving up. We are able to have our cake and eat it too. This WOL gives us so much more then it takes away, its substanable. Keep fighting, then will make a video, telling the people why this is the only way.
Cheers!
Day 10 NFD Canada
@ciren, I hope you post today, do not lose heart. Making it through tough times is SO the bigger battle. Good days come and go, but persevering through the hard times is the thing to be most proud of.
Nibbling is my downfall, absolutely. Mostly of healthy things… but they add up quickly!!
I’ve found (in my grand experience of two FD) that a big hot soup with veg and broth and a bit of meat is an excellent final meal on a fast day. Keeps me full to sleep time. I’ve been sleeping like a baby on FD evenings…
My downfall is fast food. My childhood involved wayyyy too much eating out. And I have a very hard time passing a drive through without thinking I should have a little something…a coffee…a snack wrap… usually a snack wrap.
FD yesterday and I feel wonderful this morning! Down 2.6 lbs! Back to 146.6 again. Tummy is calm, mood is calm. Less cold on my chest. I did an 18:6 coming into yesterday’s calories. Had a big leafy salad with spinach, arugula, lettuce, red pepper, cucumber and 1.5 oz chicken. With 1 tsp oil and vinegar and 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar. Then had hummus with veggies and then, this is becoming tradition, a big soup with homemade broth, lots of veggies and an oz of chicken, with garlic and ginger, pureed. Then am part way through an 17:7 on the way out of the fast. I’ll eat again at 11:30 (or so) this afternoon. Yesterday I stayed busy and very present with the children. I think that was a big help! and I had plenty of fluids. I even did a cardio at the Y. I will do a yoga class this morning before I break my fast.
Day 10 Cornwall UK. FD
Fuvvie apologies for not posting yesterday.
Had a great bike ride on Sunday Afternoon but came off my bike! What a fool I felt. A bit battered and bruised but nothing broken – I sure don’t bounce as well as I used to!!
So couldn’t do usual Monday fast as on anti-inflammatory pills.
Keeping busy today, just had a miso soup. Spinach Omelette with smoked salmon planned for later .
Happy fasting! Onwards and Down x
Day 10 – St. Louis, MO – USA – FD
Like many that have posted, I am starting to look forward to a FD vs feeling scared. Sunday was a FD and I felt fantastic – and if and when I start to feel bad today I will remind myself of that day. Not only was it much easier than previous FDs, but my mood continues to improve – up and up and up.
@Pedi – regarding being tired – which I think is a part of your overall ‘mood’? For me, the energy and my overall has greater improved! I assumed I would be tired too but that has not been the case. I am pretty sure that has to do with the fact that my norephrines have increased greatly and that has resulted in the best feeling ever! If you are looking for that ‘high’ I believe it will come when you really cut back on the carbs. Cutting carbs on FD as well as NFD has put me into ketosis and for the most part I have stayed in that state for the past 4-5 days. It varies to what degree I am burning fat but I KNOW I am creating norephrines and ketones because my mood is so improved and my energy stays high and I am so much more alert. Don’t dismay – it is something that can and will happen when you restrict those carbs and move some of those calories over to fat (I am following the keto diet which includes about 70% of my calories from fat, 15-20% protien and 10% carbs). Plus, with some fat calories, you will feel fuller for much longer. Promise!
If you are simply cutting calories on most days and not watching those carbs I am afraid it might be a bumpy ride for longer. Of course, this isn’t only my opinion the data seems to support this.
Speaking of reading – @bert1802 – what an awesome post today regarding your video and reading spree! I am totally with you on that. I have found it so motivating to read this forum each morning and again at night when I can, watch Youtube videos by experts like Jason Fung (and I am finding new ones that are equally interesting). Your description of the post you watched recently of the gal that lost the weight but gave up her soul in the process was quite interested and sad at the same time. You are so correct in saying that this is a way of life that we incorporate into OUR LIVES vs having this system take over our lives. So sad on so many levels to witness the struggles and to also remember that I have done it 1,000 times myself!
In one of Dr Jason Fung’s videos he talks about the differences between cutting calories (diet) and IF and the studies he reviews have been some of the most inspiring for me to know that I am on the right track. He shows how a low calorie diet simply cannot be sustained over the long run and that 99% of the people that try to do it will fail. As we all know, our metabolism starts to slow down so our new calorie requirements fall and as we lose weight we create a situation where we have to eat less and less to sustain the weight loss meanwhile we feel crappy due to our slowed metabolism.
With IF your metabolism INCREASES! That’s right – it goes up. When we fast our bodies see that differently than simply less calories (where we just decrease our energy out) instead our body says ‘hey wait a minute here – no food???? well, I better speed up my metabolism so I will have the energy to go out and hunt down that wooly mammoth for food for my family!’ We get sharper – mentally, physically and we burn fat so we will have energy for ‘the hunt’. It is the opposite of a low cal diet in every way. Oh, and studies show there is NOT a rebound effect like we see in a low cal diet because our metabolism didn’t slow down so there isn’t a rebound when we do eat.
I am loving this WOL. Don’t dismay – this isn’t a program that can only work for a select few. This is for any of us that want it and are willing to make some changes a couple of days per week. This is a sustained way of life – no need to give up friends, family, or wine!!!! A little planning will help us all reach our goals.
Stay strong everyone!

Birthday came and gone, definitely had my share of cakes yesterday! Thoroughly enjoyed it without guilt. It’s once a year, and hell yeah. Today I had a successful fast day, although the aircon at work (in the radiation oncology department atm and apparently the temperatures has to be extra low for the machines…) made me a little frozen at times (did have a hot soya latte! – this is becoming my daily ritual)
Exercise wise I’ve been keeping up with HIIT running intervals and resistance workouts (Kayla Itsines), morning exercise suits me the best – it feels awesome to get it out of the way before 7am π It really frees up the day for me to do other things instead of worrying about fitting it in after work.
Weigh in tomorrow morning π Laws of thermodynamics will be tested!
@laddie10 – ditto here, not fearing a FD anymore, it’s liberating!
@happymargo – thank you! I had a wonderful birthday π
Day 10. Sussex, U.K.
FD.
Yippee, isn’t it great when that ‘can do’ moment comes around again.
Ok yesterday and going for it again today, albeit slightly differently. I have to make it fit into my life and often meet friends for coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Today I delayed breakfast until met friend at Costa coffee for 10am. Had their whole grain porridge but took along my 50g of blueberries. Had a black decaff to go with it and felt good. Just had 10 almonds and will have soup tonight.
Good luck everyone today.
Bert – loved your post today. Puts it all in perspective.
Ciren – hope you are ok and getting ready for that ‘can do’ day. I am sure it will come soon.
Hello UK day 10 FD
@anaide what a good article about the whoosh – that may be why my weight shot up after Christmas it just took a while for it to catch up with me. Hope you are keeping well?
@sarah – did you mean to post here lol Brihudd22 is not a name I am familiar with – Fuvvie?
@fuvvie – are you doing 4 fast days in a row or trying to do one fast day 4 times in a row? I am on day 2 of a b2b as I feel I need a re-set. Had an estimated 522 calories yesterday and resisted truffles as they were being handed around – I can have them later if I want them. So while 522 is just over the magic number and a bit more than my 1/4 TDEE as Walden410 says that is a success.
@bert – how I love to read your posts – true and in an entertaining way π
@Jarbia- I have started and re-started c 2 5k quite a few times. I don’t continue for some reason or another when I get to week 9 but I find when I re-start I usually can skip a few sessions as it doesn’t take as long to get back on track. I also like doing the early weeks as HIT by using them as interval training.
@amigo – wait for the ‘whoosh’ did you read about it in the link Anaide put on? Keep the faith. Copied for convenience worth a look
http://100down.org/the-whoosh-effect/
Those who have kept to this challenge to date – well done you – give yourself a pat on the back and don’t forget to tell yourself how good you are! The hardest part in the beginning is to continue to post when there are so many posts flooding in – it can be a bit overwhelming but keep on keeping on you will be glad you did.
‘If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astonish ourselves’ Thomas Edison
Day 9 Sweden NFD
Had a healthy breakfast but ate way too much around lunch so now I’ve almost consumed my TDEE already. My stomach is hurting, it feels terrible. However I will have a light meal tonight (which is a good idea anyway since my stomach needs to rest). I know how my brain works and the bingeing was probably a result of me putting too much pressure on myself. So even if my stomach is hurting still (I have a very sensitive stomach), this was a good lesson for me not to put too high demands on myself and to be patient with the weightloss. I will try to make the rest of the week be all about a happy balance when it comes to food (and a petrifying exam on friday..).
I hope everyone else is doing better than me!
Day 10 β Canada β NFD
Good morning all. Just got in from an hour of snow shovelling. My workout was cancelled for this morning due to the weather so at least I managed to get some exercises in. Call me crazy but I love being out after a snowstorm. It’s so pretty and peaceful.
I had a good FD yesterday β my first in about three weeks. It went pretty well.
@Ciren 2. I’m hope that you can feel the love and concern that we feel for you. As I read through the messages people are sending you, I can’t help but feel that those words are for each and everyone of us as well. You have shown your vulnerability Ciren and that is a brave thing to do. We are lucky to have this forum to share our journey and have others shout words of encouragement when we need it the most. Please grab on and hold on until you are ready to fly again and to be a source of inspiration to someone else. β€οΈ

@sarah57 – lol I thought you were loosing the plot or I was.
@reid – what a good point to make – we all have a responsibility to show others – when the going gets tough we need to dig deep so we can reassure those who are also perhaps having a hard time or will do at some point – there is light at the end of the tunnel – you just have to keep going till you see it. What lesson do we teach others if we give up and leave – Ciren – you don’t really want to leave us do you? You need to weather this storm because believe me you will be stronger because of it.
