  • Day 7 USA (Utah-visiting)

NFD – off for a fairly busy day. Any of you go to “Live from the Met” around the world? Today is Placido Domingo in “Nabucco.” It will be popcorn for lunch today!

    D7/NFD/Canada
I’ve gained back .4 lbs since fast day last Wednesay and won’t have another one until Monday (too many people at home right now). I actually don’t feel well this morning, my skin is not good (which is odd for me). Is this normal for start of 5:2 diet? I know many other diets talk about release of toxins at the start… I’ve never been all that sure of the science of this.
Fuvvie – thank you so much for the spreadsheet and for co-ordinating this! I don’t think I’ve ever posted anywhere in my life more than twice in a row!

    Day 7- Canada – NFD
Have a good day everyone. Good to read your posts. Helps this newbie stay on track

    Day 7. Sussex, U.K.
    NFD.

Day 7 FD…and I’m 6lbs down! Went back to work and thank goodness I took lunch in a box: canteen only serving pasta, potatoes, sandwiches…with a small, uninspiring salad bar.
Biggest success/challenge for me is not having wine. I LOVE MY WINE! But recognise that I am never going to be happy with just one glass,(I prefer 5 or 6) so am developing a taste for soda and lime. I’m TRYING to develop a taste for soda and lime. Sigh 😳

    Day 7|NFD| Toronto
Cold but clear this morning;I am working hard to avoid my natural (evolutionary and instinctual) inclination for comfort/High Calorie “insulation” food.

    Day 7 – Staffordshire UK-nfd

Well pleased to say I seem to be back on track after a couple of terrible days mid week. Yesterdays Fast Day was ok, think 600 cals not 500 but I can live with that. Today my eating has been controlled and even managed to get out for a run (7miles – working up to my 1st half marathon in March).

Love the way this forum has changed my way of thinking. A couple of bad days, now feels like a blip rather than a failure. As long as I check in I know I haven’t quit, just taking it one day at a time.

UK day 7 NFD Nearly forgot to log in! Very busy day – Zumba, followed by pump class, lovely brunch then a 10 mile walk, all going well , particularly pleased that no alcohol has passed my lips ,will aim to catch up on all posts tomorrow

    Day 7 Ireland NFD
Slow 4 mile run with dogs in morning.
    Normal eating day
Good to hear that horse riding counts for something!

    Day 7 USA Hawaii NFD
    18:6

    Day 7 / Sweden / NFD

    Midwest USA/Day 7/ NFD

Hi all, weight is now 77.4kg..so headed in the right direction.
Maybe we could think of of FD as TD; by that I mean Training Days.Training to eat in new and novel, perhaps festive ways.
I had a theme for the holidays at my house this year and it continues to amuse me:
“Mishaps and Wonders.” That way everything that happened seemed to fit in just fine!
until tomorrow…keep going…you can do it…we can do this.

Fuuvie: thank you! I found the spreadsheet and it is impressive to see all of us in written form in one place!

Down 6 pounds after 1st week. First fast day was really tough didn’t eat enough of the right 500 calories. Was dizzy next morning went I went to work out. But second day fast much better. Making sure get all nutrients helps not feel sick and drinking more water helped me. I did do some type of exercise everyday.

    Day 8 NFD Gippsland Aus.
Very pleased with a weight loss to date this month of 1.4 kg. On track to lose 5!! Woohooo!!
Off for a ride on my horse with some friends today before the temp hits 37 C – not sure what that is in F but too bloody hot for this old lady.
I am sticking to 16:8 on NFD’s and finding it all helps.
    xx

    Day8 FD NZ
Had a dreadful day yesterday and was up during the night with reflux. Too much of the food thats not good for me.!! However today is FD so am in the right frame of mind. Got the latest revive cafe cookbook for Christmas and its inspirational. Is anyone else a fan of these books I have 5 of them. Pity I just read them and don’t put them into action!! I have tried some of the recipes and they have been fab.

    Day 8 Sunshine Coast Qld Australia: NFD;

Going out to my singing group for the day. Have already told them I won’t be drinking wine. Will take the sparkling mineral water with me. But will enjoy all the day has to offer. Am taking my togs as they have a pool. Looks like it could be a hot day. Birds outside making a din and Blue sky. It’s 20ºC at 06:50 so could be a scorcher. We’ve had a few days of rain, so we will see what comes.

Laddie10, I lost weight really quickly to start and took off 20 kilos in 4 months. I have regained 3.5 kgs which has been hard to shift for the following 4 months. The upside is that I would have regained all the lost weight by this stage in the past. I’m hoping to have got back to 103.2kgs by the end of this month. I do think that I cut my calories too much daily as well as fasting mostly 4:3. Now I’m trying to normalise and just doing 5:2. I’m pretty sure my metabolism has slowed. Too few calories on a daily basis will do that I think. Not being an expert, I’m trying to look at what Fung says and I started craving some of the foods that are really poison for me, sugar and grains. I played with them big time over Christmas plus good swigs of alcohol and shot up to 110kgs. A lot of that was water retention which comes with sugar and grains for me. This isn’t to say it would be the case for everyone. So my advice is don’t be too stringent. Moderation is good. I think Bert has put up a good case.

Well done AT, Bert, HappyMargo, Dykask, Headlion (I thought you had dropped out on us), kelliann, Marinermum, PamelaV,Rocy, Laddie10, sheam, Walden and JEM. Enjoy that horse ride, JEM. Will check in again this evening.

I would like to join this group. I am starting today with a fast. Frankly, I am thinking I should do a complete fast rather than use the 500 calories, because I’m afraid that if I eat something, I will go over the limit. I seem to be able to stick to it better if I don’t eat anything at all. Is important to eat the 500 calories on fast days? Also, I noticed some mention of a 6 day water fast, and wonder if I should start with that. I have had weight problems all my life, losing, then gaining, etc., but the last few years I have gained more weight than ever due to stress eating. I hope that I’ll be able to stick to this. I don’t have any major health problems at this point but I feel that if I don’t lose weight I will be likely to develop high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, or something else. So I really hope I can stick to this. I am 55, and a cancer survivor. I have found after chemo 8 years ago, my energy level has stayed low, and I have not gotten back to active lifestyle I had before.

@peli. There is nothing magical about 500 cal. Its just a number that Michael Mosley came up with as he didn’t think most people could do a proper fast. Personally my fasts are water only (I allow myself two coffees with a splash of milk, no sugar). I think a 6 day water fast may be a little over the top and takes some doing. Your asking your liver to do a lot of work. Try one day and see how you cope. Give your liver time to get good at accessing stored fats and converting them into glucose and ketones. You wouldn’t run a marathon without training so why ask your liver to perform such a big task without training it to start with. It will take about a month before your liver is able to cope. About 6 months before your liver is
    really performing well.

Try and avoid sugar at all costs. Try and avoid processed carbs. No grain based carbs. So no bread, pasta, pizza, cakes, biscuits, breakfast cereals. No fruit juice!! No potatoes.

    Good luck.

    Day 7, Québec, NFD
Still sick with my cold so l’m not very hungry, a good feeling after the Christmas overeating.

    August2024 –
I can relate to what you mean by ” insulation” food. I found that a good warm soup seems to do the job this week. Crossing my fingers hoping it stays that way.

@bert1802 & Fuvvie — THANK YOU BOTH for your replies today!

I had read Bert’s before I left today for my family event and felt much ‘safer’ to go out and enjoy the day. The first thing the team ordered up was a shared appetizer of onion rings – I had 1 1/2 and that was enough !???????? while we all chatted and enjoyed each others’ company. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak and a salad (one awesome treat vs multiple Bert) but when it came it happened to be laid open and I just started digging into the meat, onion, and cheese without thinking – no bread no big deal – another first? It was delicious but with half the salad I was quickly full but felt fantastic! Not too full – just right – so I had some yummy fatty cheese, shredded steak and a couple of breaded fried onion rings and no urge to keep on going?! Success!!

Wow – your timing Bert was perfect – I just stopped fretting over what may happen and went and all it all went well.

Fuvvie – read your post upon returning and your wisdom helped as well. You are sooooo right – and I need realizing that the real thing I should focus on is not repeating old habits of gaining it all back due to too much too soon and being too hard on myself to the point of giving up altogether. This is not a diet and I need to keep repeating myself that as often as necessary.

Thanks again you two – you got me through what could have been a disastrous day but was actually quite lovely instead.

@sheam2567 – I like your idea of TD vs FD – great insight!

    Day 7 | NFD | Bucks UK

Day 7 – SW WA USA NFD

AT – you asked how the pocketeers fared. I’m a little disappointed in myself. I did quite well during the day but did went over 500 some each evening. Last night at Bunco I snacked probably more than I should have plus had a few nuts and chocolate when I got home. The scale showed I’m about a lb more this Saturday than Dec. 31. This ts the 1st time I’ve showed a gain on an “official” weekly weigh in since I started 5:2 October. Yesterday was day 3 of b2b2b. So 210.6 lbs was the scale’s reading.

In reflecting, I didn’t keep to low carb on the meal part on the FDs. Also, I didn’t keep track of the calories accurately enough in the evenings.

Today is a new day & I’ve been keeping track well in my food journal. Reading the posts are encouraging.

Anne Marilyn – I HATE counting calories, and for many months, I just sort of guessed what I was eating (still lost weight just fine). Now I have discovered the My Fitness Pal ability to add calories on the food tracker. It’s pretty good, even on home made dishes. The restaurant (USA places) meals are also in there. I use it on my Android phone and my iPad both, and they ‘talk’ to each other as to where it gets entered. It tracks many aspects of foods (calories, carbs, sodium, sugars).

    Days 6&7 Portugal NFDs

Two not so good eating days after two FDs this week. Ah well! Visitors have all gone and I can get into this WOL more seriously again, have time to exercise and establish a more fixed routine.
Just checking in quickly, will catch up on posts tomorrow.

    Jan7: NFD

I have not had a drink this weekend which is great! Feeling so much better for not doing so! I stayed within my Daily intake today. Will have a NFD tomorrow and then be back on the FDs from Mon-Thurs (or Fri).

Already feeling great this week and super happy with not having to add any empty calories from alcohol! 😊

Hope everyone’s doing well and keeping up the good work.

    Day 7…..Florida….NFD

Howdy, to the new members…… Glad your here!

    Laddie10….. YES!!!!!!!! You did it!

    Walden….6lbs impressive!

As one of the pocket faster….. did very well! Broke fast a bit early. Husband made corned beef hash and eggs, he wanted the kids to get a good meal in before they left for the day.
Yesterday, I was exhausted, today filled with energy!

Well, off to finish my last bit of house work!
    Cheers!

    Still day 7 –

Thank you SongBirdMe – I’ll have to check out MyFitnessPal

Peli – it sounds like you may be new to the 5:2 WOL. I think it is good to start as Dr.Michael Mosley & Mimi Spencer wrote The FastDiet. As I researched what to follow, so I could get my body in control… one of the reasons I chose the 5:2, was that it doesn’t ask us to leave out any food groups and so there are choices. As I followed the 5:2 as recommended by Dr. Mosley, I lost about 11.5 lbs the first month. Yes, it’s slowed down but it’s still going downward. Now I’m starting to tweak things at times as I get ideas from others on this forum etc but I’ve been embracing this WOL since 9/26/16. You know that as I’m writing you, I’m reflecting. I did so well following the basics; maybe I should go back to them for a while again instead of attempting so many b2bs. (If you haven’t read the book, be sure to do so. It’s not that long, interesting, and helpful.)

I wish you well on your journey along with the rest of us.

Day 7 canada NFD, well done pocket fasters!

I weighed in and down 1kg since Jan 1, hurray! Broke my fast with a chocolate brownie today about 2pm. It was ambrosia. Only one square though was satisfying. In my pre 52 days would have scarfed half the pan and felt ill after, so very pleased that I seem to be satisfied with less food now.

Will relax and eat reasonably for the rest of the weekend. Next FD planned for Monday.

Will try for a liquid FD, but at the risk of being indelicate am worried about irregularity. How do you liquid fasters keep things moving, so to speak?

Day 8 NFD country West Australia
took 30 minutes just to get connection !

For those who don’t like to calorie count. I used to loathe it but started using MFP to work out what my TDEE actually looked like. I was SO out of whack with what I was eating especially portion size and amounts.

I was eating fairly healthily but way way WAY too much. Horrendously so.
Research shows that most people are actually woeful at guesstimating their calorie intake
( underestimate) and woeful at working out how much they have used up ( overestimate).

It was only after starting 5:2 in November 2016 and tracking calories that I started to lose weight AND keep it off.
Weight is fluctuating at present due to not calorie counting and not being so mindful and eating lots of food I don’t normally.

I do not plan to crunch the calorie numbers forever but did it for several weeks and it kept me on track and accountable, as well as the group support found here.

I will be more diligent when back home and in charge of the food supplies. ( excuses excuses – some things never change!)

I am hoping that we will all be able to log in in November/December 2017 and to see how we are all travelling in 12 months to see how this WOL has impacted our lives and whether we are fitter, healthier and maintaining weight loss . That will be the ‘ proof in the pudding’ so to speak.

@in it to thin it — I have the same issue! I am tried magnesium citrate and Miralax and lots of fluids and I even drank a water with psyllium —so far they aren’t doin’ the trick but surely the combo will?

    D7 | NFD | Singapore

The day started off well enough with a soya latte, berries and two pieces of low GI toast… Then I went to a birthday surprise that my friends planned for me – turned out to be at a beautiful restaurant by the river with a buffet dim sum + chocolate cupcakes… Tits up day! Probably had > 1500 cal in one meal… But guess what, I have zero regrets. I can always scale back another day and make up for the excess. It’s more than precious to spend time with your loved ones and enjoy good food!!!

Did a bit of walking about town after lunch and got home, still stuffed to the gills (yes, hunger signals are returning! previously if I have had a big meal out and ‘blown it’ I would just get home and bust open the junk food…), skipped dinner and went to the gym for a easy 45mins elliptical session.

    Total: estimated 2150 cal

Although I’ve done 2 fast days this week (the second one being a little shaky at 760 cal…) I will try to do a 1200 cal day tomorrow instead of my usual TDEE. I will do once weekly weigh ins from next week, but as of now I feel very liberated on this ‘diet’. Really want to do it for the rest of my life!

    Day 8 | NFD

Weekend nearly over? Hope everyone is enjoying themselves… got half a bottle of wine that I should probably finish off this evening before tomorrow’s FD, hopefully I won’t eat too much while I drink it, lol (always seems to be a problem!)

…anyway, best of wishes to all, especially to those fasting today.

    Day 8 – Auckland NZ – NFD

Back to work tomorrow, and hence back to the weekly commute. Have had a glorious three weeks off with my boys….. at least fasting is easier while I’m away.

Day 8, NFD, New Zealand. Hello Fuvvie, I’m very late to this month’s forum as I’ve been on a great summer road trip. Enjoyed every moment of it, the stunning New Zealand scenery, the camping, the family, the food and the drink. Consequently, after losing 6.6kg during Nov and Dec challenges, I put back on 3.1kg. I’m not at all worried about that gain, as I know that I can knuckle down and achieve my next goal with this forum and 5:2.
Having not read the forum since Dec 21, it’s great to dip back into everyone’s thoughts. I haven’t forgotten how supportive everyone is, so really looking forward to joining you all.
So, I’ll do my first FD on Tuesday this week. I have to remember that I used to do b2b2b in December as I had an achievable goal to reach before Xmas, so I can totally do a single FD to get back into the swing of this WOL.

    Day 8 – Melbourne, Aus – FD
Not going to be my usual FD but I’m in Sydney for 3 days next week Mon-weds which would be 2 of my usual FD’s so I’m having an extra one today so I don’t have to have one whilst I’m away. Not feeling great woke feeling hot bothered with a stinking headache. Think I had a sugar headache (not sure if that’s a real thing?). On my NFD yesterday I went to cinema on the Gold Class package which includes a food package. I ate a light breakfast and lunch but still ate more than I should at the cinema and felt really bloated and tired afterwards. Might be a good sign that my appetite is decreasing?

Day 6 – FD – NY State (currently on vacation in Western Mexico)

    Hello all,
Fast day for me today. It’s the 3rd one this week. It didn’t g very well b/c I ate cheese in the evening and that must have got me way beyond the 500 cals. It still was a very good day as I’m sure I was under my TDEE.

    Happy fasting every one!

Day 7 – NFD – NY State (currently on vacation in Western Mexico)
    .
    Happy fasting every one!

Day 7: Pacific NW USA, partial FD, that is, something hit me today, headaches, couldn’t think about food until OH insisted I needed to eat so I wasn’t taking Advil on an empty stomach but that hasn’t even helped much. Going back to bed.

    Day 8. Sussex. U.K.
    NFD.

    Day 8 – Staffordshire UK-nfd

Got on the scales this morning and I’m down 2lb, really pleased as it’s been a funny old week.

    Day 7/8 NFDS Cornwall UK

Fuvvie apologies for not posting yesterday, a really busy one with our grandchildren! We had them from Fri after school until last night, had a brilliant time, they are delightful, full of energy and fun!

Friday went ok fasted til supper and then Saturday fasted til 3pm. I didn’t count calories so around tdee maybe slightly over yesterday az I had a sweet last night. But life is for living and this is not the norm!

So today OH has made me paoched egs on toast, how could I refuse! Not going to go on a long bike ride while the weather is with us. I will get back to routine and fast tomorrow!

No time to catch up on posts but hope to later today, so many of us!!

Happy Sunday everyone, relax and enjoy!

    Day 8 / FD / Oman

Trying to fast until dinner @ 6pm. Just water and coffee. It’s very difficult particularly since I had to go food shopping and later I have to cook for DH and kids!!

    DAY 8 – BUCKS UK – NFD

Fast day yesterday went well – only had my 388cal Count-on-Us and salad – BUT then cheated (why!!!) with a few peanuts (about 20) – but was still pleased and this morning
a bit more weight loss…friends coming for cards to-night but am determined not to overeat and keep within my tdee – well that’s the plan anyway!! I have a chocolate log left over from Xmas that needs eating….I’m hoping they will eat it for me!. I am just going to work out how many cals in a Martini and tonic – if too many perhaps I’ll try a dry January – altho’ I’m not a proper drinker, as I cannot drink wine. I am not telling any friends that I am dieting…..too much pressure. One week down, a lifetime to go….I am so happy to have survived the first week – and the weights looking better too. Well done all – this is such a wonderful forum….thank you.x

    Day 8 – Denmark – FD

We have had visitors the last two days, and I have been eating a lot. I also have gained over 1 kg.
    Today it is Fasting Day

    Day 8– Colorado, USA– FD

lilymartin– I had the same eye-opening experience you had once I started tracking calories. Shocking!

I use the Lose It app (very similar to My Fitness Pal. Love that I can build my own recipes for accuracy & even scans bar codes.)

I had already “cleaned up” my diet by eliminating processed/ packaged foods. Ditched all the sugars & white stuff (eliminated bread, pasta, rice, grains. I can’t have gluten due to my Crohn’s.) I plan each meal asking, “Where’s my protein & healthy fat? Where’s my veggies?”

So I do quite well aiming for nutritious choices. But was also eating *WAY too much* of it all. It was very educational for me to break out the measuring cups & spoons. Then log each meal into Lose It app.

–> Had to re-train my eyes to see portion sizes correctly. <–

So meticulous tracking doesn’t have to go on forever (unless you enjoy that sort of thing.)

Aussie Day 8 almost forgot been quite busy will sit down tomorrow and catch up with everyone’s posts.

    Day 8 -Belfast UK-NFD
Well done to everyone for the big losses. Your collective determination is SO motivating. My sceptical friend told me last night that she has started the 5:2 – that’s two friends I have convinced who have started this WOL which is great ‘cos now I can chat to them too. Interestingly, my OH, who is type one diabetic for over 30 years, has only eaten two meals a day for a long time, eating his first meal sometime between 11am and 1pm. His blood sugars are very stable and he seems to do it effortlessly, so now I have fitted into this routine it makes our meal times much easier to manage.. haven’t been using MFP since we were away but am back on that. @lilymartin I totally agree with what you say about tracking what we eat. It is so easy to overestimate your portion size.
@lew I was in NZ for a month before Christmas and was blown away by the scenery. Our biggest mistake was not allowing enough time to see everything. Should have stayed longer!
My swim class starts back tomorrow so I’m now really done with holidays and back to proper routine. Feeling strong and motivated for the new week.

peli– welcome aboard! This is a wonderful WOL (way of life) to lose weight & get healthier if you give it a chance.

I agree with AnneMarilyn though, that when just starting out, it’s best to follow the plan as designed by Dr. Mosley & Mimi in the book.

Earlier in this thread BigBooty has an excellent explanation of “giving it time.” There’s no rush on intermittent fasting. Be gentle with your body & ease into it. Follow the 5:2 for a month to give your liver time to adjust to gluconeogenesis. Let your body become familiar with running on fat & ketones (instead of the glucose/ sugar we’ve all grown accustomed to.)

There are many experienced Intermittent Fasters on this forum. Loads of great ideas & methods to tweak our programs. But try it out as originally written first. Ease your body into these changes. No need to dive right into a 6-day water only Fast.

It took me months before I was successful at a total liquid only back-to-back, 2 day Fast. With the hand-holding help of this group! I felt fantastic & was glad I’d given my body time to build up to it.

    Happy Birthday, kmeng!!!
Enjoy that birthday celebration with no regrets. You handled it well & hopefully enjoyed the moment with special people.

I love this WOL because it does allow for birthdays, weddings & holiday feasts… then we can dial it back down a few Fasts to re-set our bellies & hunger cues. Feast & Fast. A nice rhythm.

LEW– welcome back! Your family vacation sounds fantastic. Don’t sweat those 3 kgs, you’ll knock those off in short order.

elsa cotton– What movie did you see? I absolutely love going to an afternoon matinee. Feels indulgent! No crowds, best seating. I’d have a blast with that Gold Package deal…our newest Cinema just got approved to serve beers & wine too. Yikes! Now I’m really gonna be in trouble. Good thing I only do several big movies a year!

lovingmylife– every time I read your opener: (currently on vacation in Western Mexico) I look out my window at the mountains of Colorado snow & go “Sigh. Jealous.” Hope you are truly enjoying yourself!

B2tF– so sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. You’re so good at caring for others, now do you. Feel better soon! ((Hugs))

UK day 8 NFD – Caught up on all the last 2 days posts ,great to see so much sensible advice, and the ups and downs of everyday life around the world. Québécois – welcome back x

Feel as though I’ve had a nice, fairly chilled first week back in the saddle, time to ramp it up a bit next week, will commence fast at around 8 this evening and I’ll see how it develops
