  • Day 7 – Auckland, NZ – NFD

Amazing how much more conscious you become about what you eat on a NFD, eh?

@pamelav – thank you for sharing about your fingers and lack of pain. I think mine has improved too. I’ve just turned 45, and never expected to have pain in my finger joints at this age, but my Mum and grandmother both had/have arthritic hands, so I just figured it was genetic. This seems to be helping.

@quebecoise – get well soon! Sending warmth and sunshine from sunny NZ.

@rocy65 – where in Cornwall do you live? I was in Helston for 15 months, came back to NZ two years ago today!

    Summary for my first week:

Day 1 NFD weight 111 kg
    Day 2 NFD
    Day 3 FD
    Day 4 NFD
    Day 5 FD
Day 6 NFD weight 108.8 kg
    Day 7 NFD

@fuvvie – thank you for leading us. This is awesome!

    Day 6 | FD | Bucks UK

My first fast for 2k17! 😁
It has been a bit of struggle as I have been ill this week and it’s super cold at the moment. I have been having hot drinks which has helped loads.
I also finally got to try out my George Foreman grill πŸ‘Œ chicken and veg for dinner.

    Dayb6 – Staffordshire UK-fd

Day 7 FD Gippsland, Australia Wt 79.2

I am amazed at how addictive this WOL is. As a dedicated carb eater and past alcohol every night person, it is easier and easier every day to make better food choices. I enjoyed my glasses of bubbles over Christmas and New Year, but no longer looking to have a drink every evening. I think it was a habit I really needed to break.

I weigh myself every morning and find this a great way to keep track of how I am going. If I make good choices on a NFD I can usually lose 100gm. On a FD I drop 200gm. It seems pretty consistent even allowing for natural fluctuations. I suppose it also helps that I don’t have monthly weight swings like younger women still have!!

I am also finding that if I have my largest meal in the middle of the day and only a light meal in the evening that seems to help. I suspect it helps with naturally lower insulin levels going into sleep.

Keep going so well everyone. Lovely to read of everyones experiences. xx

    Just checking in:

    @fuvvie Jan6-NFD

I did a fast from yesterday dinner to today’s dinner and had home made pizza (2 slices only and all weighed up coming up to 460 cal). Good news is that I resisted the urge to drink! Woohoo! But I had a big bag of pop corn and some peanuts and 2 glasses of pressed apple juice whilst watching a film and this made me go to 960. I’m def counting it as a NFD today sadly. BUT, I’m so. SO happy I didn’t drink and have no entries for all those empty calories on MFP.

Let’s hope I keep it up tomorrow! I will be on a NFD and keeping to my TDEE of 1200.

    Good night peeps πŸ’€

Day 7 Sunshine Coast Qld Australia NFD:

DebbieQ ‘ I see a snowman and maybe a snow angel in my future πŸ™‚’ you fill me with all sorts of wishes that have nothing to do with weight. It would be lovely to be able to do that once in my life. It sounds like so much fun. But all the sidewalk snow shovelling is another matter.

Reid, there is no hard and fast rules about when to weigh in or post weight. Some folk like to post it regularly, others just post it now and then. The main aim of the challenge is to post daily and anything extra you want to add is up to you. As you can see, there is a lot of healthy dialogue going on. The second challenge (unofficial) is to keep up with the posts LOL. It can be quite time consuming.

PamelaV, you certainly have got the hang of it now and I have entered your details into the spreadsheet. I would love it if Dr MM saw some of this thread. It validates so much of what he and Mimi Spenser have written in their book. Good luck with you 30 lb. Good luck with trying the extra hydration and salt for headaches.

Ciren 2, you have done so well so far. Don’t be so hard on yourself. It does seem to be a constant battle. I would so much like to give up this endless battle with myself and eat whatever whenever, but as soon as I do that, it all just piles back on. It really is a matter of stopping from putting all those desired things on some sort of pedestal and thinking they are going to provide some sort of happiness if we can only have them. It is a lie we keep telling ourselves, or the insulin and other hormones tell us. We are only truly happy for a while when the scales tell us what we want to hear as a reward for our efforts. Then we think we can reward ourselves with the food that actually made us unhappy in the first place. So we need to be like NorrieB, speak kindly to ourselves and go gently. Forgive ourselves when we get it wrong and move on. Together we can do this. I’ve still got 30+ kgs to go and having lost a minimum of 17kgs at this point, it really is a daily struggle to stay committed. It’s the most I’ve lost at any time previously, but I always started at lower weights and reached goals. My 99.9kg goal has been taunting me since August. It’s like moving through mollasses. But I am getting there. You are there. You are doing great. I want to hear you saying that….and again….and again. Yeah!

    Well done AnneMarilyn.

Congratulations Yirrakurl. Big gold star for you.

Hello everyone 2nd post I think lol. I have finally caught up with all the posts, phew!

I only made it a 24 hour fast pocketeers but cheering those on who are continuing until tomorrow.

@emilymeg – my what a busy person you are and what an early start. Have you tried almond milk? Easy to make yourself too and I don’t bother with blanched almonds but soak those with skins on. Helps if you have a good blender. I bought a nut bag for straining but to try it first strain as best you can with what you have.

@pocket_w – I actually find b2b fasts easier once you get the mindset right. Where/who advised it was not recommended? Day 1 you do all the hard work with day 2 being easier. I did my first b2b on a Monday and tue (started after evening meal sunday) and found even on Wednesday I was not hungry and carried on until lunch time when I thought I should break my fast.

@pamelav – starting 2017 you and I have a similar starting weight and similar end goal – we could get there together!

@nmanfield – if I understand correctly you want to loose 2 kg a week? Can I ask how long you believe that is achievable? Don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble but I’m with wellrounded and think a slow steady lb a week is more realistic with this WOL.

    Have a good day/night x

    Day 6…..Florida…..FD

Have you ever been so tired, that you brain just can’t compute the environment around you? That’s me today…….
Seriously, it’s raining outside and it actually driving me insane….. I just wish it would shut the hell up.

I made it through my day, under 500 calories, fasting until noon tomorrow but again that may be longer as I may not even get out of bed.

Another astonishing busy day, thank goodness, they hired some today, hopefully, she’ll start in less than two weeks. Apparently, shes gotta put notice in at her other job. To be honest, the boss was asking for my feed back on what I thought of her and I’m not sure I gave any coherent answers. Let’s be honest here for a moment, I think I only said a handful of words to her under which most of those words were excuse me. When all I want to say was either keep up or get the hell outta the way!
I’m for sure on automatic pilot at the moment.

Please forgive me as I honestly can’t remember names with questions or comments. So, if you feel as if it applies to, please run with it because it probably does!

Headaches on or off FD, could also be do to the lack of potassium in your diet… Eat a banana.

Although riding a horse doesn’t count as walking, it can count as strength traing because of the use of muscle, with the weight of your body being the resistance.
Leg day! Because you are using your thigh muscle to stay on top, your core to keep upright and your arms to stop the furry beast from running amuck…. win win in my book.

Got to remember to take the list out of my pocket, or your all gonna end up with a bath in my washing machine tonight.

Did you know shivering helps the body maintain its heat therefore keeps the bodies metabolism moving…. burning more calories without putting much effort in! Stay warm my cold weather friends!

In Va down to Ga, they are using a new substance on the road called brine. The weather channel isnt saying what it is. do any of you know?

You could actually see a decrease in inflammation of the joints after and continuing on IF. Studies suggest the IF, can reduce inflammation in the body which includes bloating around the stomach region. We can get inflammation around our organs causing an increase of the waste line.

Okay, well the kid just came out and asked me to proof read his term paper. I told him, I was tired but .i would do my best. All I got to say is he’s one brave kid, considering it’s taken me over an hour to write this post.

    Still not asleep!

@bert brine is what you find with tuna in cans or you soak pork/bacon to preserve. I thought it was salted water?

Going to try again to fall asleep – nite all x

    Day 7 – Tokyo, Japan – NFD – 77.9 kg.

I drank a lot on my FD but fasting just seems to dry me out. However this the first time for me to crack 78kg! I’m down 2.7kg from yesterday so most of that is water for sure, still it feels good to be getting close to my goal of 77kg.

4 years ago I was at 106kg. The standard eat less move more got me to 94kg but that was 3 years of suffering. Last year I cut way back on sugar and that plunged my weight to 86kg where it stayed. 4 months of 5:2 has done the rest. Fasting is amazing and now I get to enjoy much more food than before. However I’m still avoiding the refined added sugars.

@pam. The headaches go away after about a month. Need to hang tough for a month. The headaches are a combination of dehydration, lack of salt, and the fact that your liver has no idea how to convert stored fats into glucose and ketones because it hasn’t been asked to perform that function in a very LONG time. The up shot is that your system is struggling to send enough glucose to your brain. Good news is that your brain will happily work on ketones as well. Just give your liver time to start making this again. Its forgotten how to do it!! Give it a month.

Things that will help. Drink water regularly. Drink coffee. Take a good multi B vitamin. It will help liver function. Take about half a teaspoon of sodium salt (normal table salt) with water. Also take potassium salt. Its marketed as lite salt in supermarkets. Take half a teaspoon with water.

    Hope that helps.

    Day 7 Melbourne NFD

    Still Day 6k –

Emilymeg – I like using nut milk in my coffees. The Cashew milk I have found is by Silk and clocks in at 25 calories per cup. I don’t drink it plain like I used to do dairy milk as a child. i also use almond milk from Trader Joe’s – original, unsweetened at 40 calories a cup. I usually put in an ounce in a mug of coffee. Sometimes I make a “Fauxbucks” my own version of a special Starbucks coffee. I may use real coffee or a coffee substitute, a rounded tsp of baking cocoa, 1/2 cup of nut milk, and some stevia. I may make a fauxbucks to take to the Bunco game tonight so I stay true to my day 3 of FDs.

    Day 6 Canada, FD

Hello to fellow pocket fasters. So far feeling great. Felt a bit weird around 3 pm this afternoon, but took the list of names out of my pocket and thought of you all,had a hot tea and carried on through the wobbles which were short lived. Thinking of you all as we go through the second half of the 36 hours.

I may be the furthest west (VANCOUVER,Canada)on the forum? Some of you already into day 7 so maybe finishing up the pocket fast

It is so encouraging to hear of the success of those that have been following this WOL for a few months. Love to read about your success and struggles.

    D6 | FD | Singapore

Today was tough. I had prepped my lunch from home (Salad with olives, tofu, cucs/toms/onion/carrots + 2 eggs) but my colleagues wanted to eat at a korean place for lunch. I stuck with my food (no embarrassment!) instead of just giving in and ordering something from the cafe just to look normal – I think a key to this way of life is that you got to stop being self conscious and just be comfortable with your choices. It’s nothing to be scared about. You do you, do what works for you!

However I did overeat during dinner (made stirfried prawns and steamed broccoli – was going to have half of it but I managed to eat everything…) – I’m not going to beat myself up about it, it’s not a complete flop! I will just have to be careful on the subsequent NFDs.

    Total: 760 cals
Exercise: 25mins of HIIT intervals on the elliptical early morning

    Day 6, US, NFD

    Day 7 – Brisbane, Australia – NFD

Not fasting, but having a fairly light day after pigging out on Chinese takeaway and ice cream last night πŸ˜‰

Thanks again for keeping tabs on everyone Fuvvie!

Hey ! I would love to join the challenge albeit a little late! I have been working out and on a low carb diet. My current weight is 210 and my goal is 160! We can do it!!! Need all the motivation I can get! My problem is always consistency particularly if the results are immediately apparent!! Lol Here we go! Good luck!!

I forgot to mention I will also be doing the intermittent fast!

Aussie day 7 well my FD yesterday went south will be doing it tomorrow stick with it everyone.

    D7/NFD/Finland
Feeling good and going to a longer walk today. It has been freezing cold -25 degrees Celsius the last too days. FD have been easy except that I have all kinds of pains in my body, mostly joints and muscles also and headaches too. I have taken a small dose of a painkiller to manage the pain. I think myΓΆs body is complaining about losing fat…

    Day 7/NFD/Oman
I’m not eating breakfast today but we’re going out for brunch so maybe it’ll be a 16:8 day rather than 18:6!

To those of u having a tough day or even a tough week – stick with it. Tomorrow is a new day!

I’ve had a headache off and on all week. I read somewhere that cutting out or down on carbs can cause this too…i am a total carb addict. Trying to cut way down. It’s hard!

Day 6: Pacific NW USA, 24 hour FD ended tonight at dinner. Hope everyone else is having a good conclusion to their pocket fast!

    DAY 7 BUCKS UK FD

Nfd yesterday – think I kept under my tdee – went for a long walk, and then stopped at local cafe and had Eggs benedict with Avocado – yummy yummy….(Brunch) – and a sensible supper of Veggie burger and 1/2 jkt potato (without lashings of butter)and salad and avoided the Xmas cake.
I was surprised to see that I had still lost a teeny weeny bit of weight this morning.
FD to-day and have cheated by buying an M&S Count on Us – so I won’t have to think about preparing food or think about calories. My hubby is very good and will happily prepare his own. I seem to have got over the headaches and am drinking Oxo and Marmite for the salt content. Love reading the posts – and Bert1802 found yours hilarious. Keep em coming and stick with it. Oh! I weigh every morning to help keep things under control but won’t post ’til end of Jan – unless everyone else does.

2nd post: I read this today and thought it would be a good quote from The Obesity Code p131:
‘It is simply not necessary to eat the minute we wake up. We imagine the need to ‘fuel up’ for the day ahead. However, our body has already done that automatically. Every morning, just before we wake up, a natural circadian rhythm jolts our bodies with a heady mix of growth hormone, cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine ( adrenalin). This cocktail stimulates the liver to make new glucose, essentially giving us a shot of the good stuff to wake us up. This effect is called the dawn phenomenon and it has been well described for decades.’

    Day 7: Belfast UK, NFD
    Weight 162.25
    Back to logging on MFP
Have just sat and read all your posts. I retired from teaching 18 months ago and while I don’t miss the workload, I miss the daily craic with my colleagues. This group is like my new work family! I just love the posts and the advice.
@weemee I bought a Fitbit a year ago and found myself dancing to songs on the radio (I was on my own at the time!) to rack up my steps even though I’d done 70 lengths of the swimming pool!I now try to do a small routine with squats etc – every little helps! However, I totally agree with Bert1802- horse riding is great exercise.
@pamelav I weigh myself daily but log once a week (Sat). It keeps me in control! Your stats and goals are very similar to mine. I lost 14 lb from May – Oct which was slower than I would have liked, put a few on over Xmas, and started this next leg @163.5lbs. So I’m with you all the way with your challenges! Good luck!

    Day 7 – Denmark – NFD

Yesterday we had visitors, sleeping here overnight. We had a lot of good dinners and wine, so to day, I have gained a little.

PamelaV– glad to hear you’ve already dropped 2 pounds & have noticed a lessening in inflammation/ arthritis. Fantastic results both!

As far as headaches, this has been addressed with very detailed answers several times on this (very fast moving!) thread. Go back & see my responses to Headaches/ Dizziness/ Light-headed symptoms on pages 9 & 13.
There is a very helpful link to Jason Fung on those posts too. Best of Luck!!

JEM3487 & Yirrakuri– great job on giving up the nightly drink. That is such an easy habit to slide into & the added calories just aren’t needed. That’s not to say there are no health benefits to an evening glass of wine, but Dry January can really help boost a little weight loss.

My goal was to cut out all drinks at home & only order a dry red wine on Date Night out at restaurant with DH. Boy, does that give me something to look forward to on Saturdays! So far, so good.

Fuvvie– haha! So true about the secondary challenge: keeping up with all these posts is an endurance event!

Ciren– I’m so glad to see you still with us. Hopefully, post holiday mail service will lighten up soon for you & you can concentrate on your lovely self. I am just 3-4 pounds (1.5 kg) away from my goal weight now & can see sliding into maintenance will take some diligence too. Even at goal, I plan to stick around this forum of helpful people for continued support…I hope you do as well! We love having you here & are cheering for you!

Coda– I totally agree with you the b2b Fasts. First time, I braced myself for it to be “really tough” but just as you say, the first day you do all the hard work. The 2nd day seems so much easier. Then by 3rd day, I can usually make it to an early 11:00 lunch. I end up having loads of energy & I’ve knocked out my FDs for the week!

    Hello day 7 nfd UK

As well as Happymargo’s pieces on headaches, easiest way to access her posts is click on her name, replies created and read rather than go back to the pages and read through lots of others posts. Bigbooty, who drops in from time to time as if by magic, shared this not too far up the page but I’ll copy it again as I didn’t know this.
    !

Next week I’m planning to do an extended fast starting from after dinner Sunday. I feel I need a reset, not sure how long I’ll do but will see how I feel each day.

@debster I totally get how this group becomes your friends. Although I still work albeit with only one other female now, no ones gets it like this group does. When I had a bit of a crisis last year – who were my best friends? Who, although we’re spread out over the world, offered support and advice? My virtual friends – who have found each other by chance. Ha ha ‘In all the threads/forums in all the world’ have a good weekend x

dykask– Wow, you’ve made great progress so far! Seems for so many of us, cutting the sugar is key. Intermittent Fasting just adds that extra nudge of insulin control (along with a host of other health benefits.) Glad it’s working well for you!

LizEg– welcome! Many of us on here follow LCHF (low carb high fat ala Dr. Eenfeldt of https://www.dietdoctor.com/how-to-lose-weight ) or are learning to cut sugars out of our diets. Intermittent Fasting is another wonderful weapon in the arsenal, along with some healthy exercise. Sounds like you are on a good path!

Gardener– sorry to hear of your muscle aches, pains & headaches. Bigbooty gave great advice just a few posts above to help with all that. We promise that it does get so much easier if you make it past the first full month of FDs. By February you will look back & be so pleased with your progress.

Fuvvie– thanks for the quote from Fung. I find breakfast the easiest meal to skip. Usually don’t have it Monday thru Friday, so even NFDs can be 18:6.

Day 7– Colorado, USA– NFD (but will only have 2 meals: brunch & date night dinner with DH.)

Yesterday’s NFD ended up being very low calorie, well below TDEE (unplanned.)

DH & I both had the day off work so decided to test-drive some new cars. My car is 16 years old & starting to have multiple issues. DH has been trying for years to take me car shopping but I’m proud I’ve kept it so long & it’s been so nice having zero car payments.

With all the crazy snow Colorado has been getting lately, I just can’t get thru the streets with my old sub-compact tiny car. After all the test-driving & negotiating (Ugh!) I selected a nice little cross-over SUV that has all-wheel-drive for safety. Can’t believe how much I love it! Wheeee!!

Anyway, it surprisingly took over 9 hours for the whole process. With no breaks for snacks or lunch.

Luckily, my body’s now well-accustomed to intermittent fasting & took the long day in stride. I noticed a few waves of hunger around 2:30, but drank a bottle of water & was fine till we made it to dinner.

WOW have things changed following LCHF & fasting. In my previous life I would have been low-blood sugar crashing & truly HANGRY (= hungry + angry.) But now it’s no big deal. I simply drink more water & promise myself I’ll get to eat later.

It was an excellent surprise test & I passed! My body has adapted to this new WOL splendidly!

Congratulations everyone. There’s no need to give up the wine. I do the Every Other Day fast diet, which means I get my fix of Rioja every other day.

Day 7, London- aiming for a FD

Yesterday was my first successful FD for 2017, yay. Scales show 0.7 kg down (but I’m still slightly above the weight I ended Nov with).

Will carry on drinking tea and black coffee until the evening, but then we have friends coming for dinner and I’m cooking, so may go over 500 cals. This is still a success for me, though- I realize what a constant grazer I’d become, so a 46h fast is not something I thought I am capable of, only a few months ago (am a newbie).

    Enjoy the weekend, lovely people!

Hello, Mark Mywordz. I am doing a dry January because I had so much wine, spirits and liqueurs over the festive system, that I just want to give my liver a chance to recover. I also don’t need the alcohol. I find that sparkling mineral water and good company make me just as happy. But it is not a permanent abstinence. The sleep apnoea specialist that I see annually, has said that I should cut out alcohol as it can precipitate breast cancer and I have had a couple of cysts, but fortunately they were not malignant. She calls alcohol social valium. So medically I guess there are reasons to give it up. Everything in moderation, I guess.

Congrats on the new car, HappyMargo. You do sound very happy. After your stay in hospital, I think you have gained an even greater appreciation of the joys in life.

Day 7 NFD Country West Australia

Will be NFDs I think for next 5 days until holidays with family are finished!
Props to Fuvvie for keeping tabs on us all.
If I don’t post for next 4 days it will be due to being out of range of WIFI or broadband. Reception very dodgy here in the sticks.
It takes me a while to read all the posts. Welcome to old and newbie 5:2ers
Trying to keep under TDEE, BUT staying in the middle of a beautiful well-regarded wine region in the south of West Australia.
Had done 16:8 until 2 pm today and was SO hungry I got stuck in to the bread, still warm as freshly baked. Yum yum yum.
Then when the ploughman’s came out I became the vacuum cleaner of old.
I did manage to stick to just one wine – but am sipping my second as I write this post.

Unlike others, I don’t really have a problem with sugar as I am not a ‘sweets’ person but put me near savoury food …
Anyway will do my best for the next few days. ( Off to another winery for lunch tomorrow after breakfast out, and then the tavern for dinner.) Say no more!

As to headaches I have always ended up with a migraine when trying to do liquid only fasts in the past for charity ( 40 hour Famine) etc. I have drunk plenty of water, had electrolytes/magnesium/ potassium/salt/ zinc etc all to no avail. So I always eat a little something.
As mentioned previously, once family have gone I plan to try b2b fast and will try liquid only.

Currently nursing a headache , not caused by fasting but the result of walking in to the point of a metal bar at head height this morning! ouch! ouch! ouch !ouch !ouch!
    Enjoy your weekend everyone.
Tonight I will sleep among the tall timbers near Denmark. Absolutely stunning.πŸ™ƒ

    Day 7 – Cumbria UK – NFD

Pocketeers – Yesterday I carried on fasting until my evening meal last night when I broke my fast with a lovely homemade fish curry and a couple of glasses of wine (so achieved fasting from 2000hrs Wed 4/1 until 1900hrs Fri 6/1 – 500cal consumed in that period)

Weight this morning still just below my target = 54.8kg/120.8lbs – have now stayed at target or below since 7th December! YAY for me!

Went for a lovely brunch with the OH before food shopping this morning – enjoyed poached eggs, sourdough toast and avocado – my all time favourite with a flat white – no more food required until my evening meal tonight which will be some left over vegetable tagine I made on Thursday night.

How did our pocketeers get on – Pissupoosa – B2tF – Bert – AnneMarilyn – Coda – Well Rounded??

I am with the group on here who have mentioned that they have moved to only two meals per day on a NFD day.
Since following this WOL – I do not find that I need to have food on waking up and no snacking in between my meals – I don’t feel the need – and it does get easier to say NO when others keep offering you food – I will often go out for a coffee with friends or my OH and not need/want to indulge in cakes whilst they do!!! I think they have just got used to my WOL and no longer find it odd BUT sometimes my first meal of the day is coffee and cake late morning!!!!

I forgot to mention that like others I also gave up sugar in my tea/coffee some 4 months after I started this WOL – my OH does not have sugar in anything so I decided to just stop – I missed it dreadfully especially in my tea for some 2 months or so but suddenly I stopped missing it and have not looked back.

At the moment I remain frustrated at not being able to do my normal walks/yoga sessions as my left hamstring/Baker’s cyst is still hurting – patience is a virtue or so they say………..

I have enjoyed reading the various posts on this forum, we are such a big group now and cannot stay on top of all the names but I hope the following comments are helpful.

If you are new to this way of life and are struggling with fasting – I would advice that you do 2 x 500cal or 1/4TDEE days per week, NOT consecutive days initially and split your calorie intake into two meals during the 24hr period – try this for a couple of weeks. Then try to have all your calories in only one meal per day for a couple of weeks.
Perhaps you can then move to trying minimal calories e.g a dash of milk in tea/coffee and some low calorie broth/bouillon and no solid foods for the day and hey presto you are nearly on a water fast only.

Since reaching maintenance I have moved to 16:8 days on my NFDs and usually manage to stay within my TDEE but sometimes exceed that……….My FDs vary from being a one meal of below 500cal or sometimes it is a minimal calorie fluid only day, depending on how I feel.

Since reaching maintenance I have kept fasting for 2 days a week and the reason for continuing fasting for 2 days a week is to gain the benefits as clarified by this quote from Dr Mosely’s book (Page 70) – what more encouragement do we need?
    The benefits of Fasting include:-
    – Weight loss
    – A reduction of IGF-1, which means that you are reducing your risk of a number of age-related diseases,
    such as cancer
    – The switching-on of countless repair genes in response to this stressor
    – Giving your pancreas a rest, which will boost the effectiveness of the insulin it produces in response to elevated blood glucose. Increased insulin sensitivity will reduce your risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cognitive decline.
    – An overall enhancement in your mood and sense of wellbeing. This may be a consequence of your brain producing increased levels of neurotrophic factor, which will hopefully make you more cheerful, which in turn should make fasting more doable.

How is that for motivating us to start or continue with FASTING for the rest of our lives?????

    Georgia/USA/Day 7/NFD

    Day 7……Florida….NFD

So, here’s the scoop this morning….. I awake way before I want to be, but at least I feel as if I’m actually functioning rather than being on auto pilot!

Finishing strong with my pocket pals……. will break fast around noon today!

I have made the decision to make Sat. mornings, my new weigh in day. I’ve been debating all week with myself about it. In the pervious challenges, I was a Tues. morning girl but during the holidays I didn’t weigh in until the last day which happen to fall on a Sat. morning and this challenge started on Sun. So, there you have it!
This morning, I weighed in at 153.6lbs, I’m down but by how much that I don’t know.
I should have put it in the tracker first but didn’t! That’s next!

Coda…. Sorry, you had a sleepless start to the slumber phase of your day…. hopefully today runs smooth for you. I actually thought brine was a salt solution for meat as well.i just can’t imagine using on roads before a winter storm. From what, I gather from the weather channel is that they use it as a deterrent before a storm to keep the ice and snow from accumulating on the road ways. It’s a new system they invented if that’s the right word… I hope it works for the safety of all those travelers. I would really like to know what it consists of?

HappyMargo….. I’m so glad life is treating you so good these days…. oh, I love the new car smell…..

Fuvvie……. My love….. I can’t say how much I appreciate you! You are kind, strong and dedicated. Our friend list keeps growing and your star shines even brighter on us!

Lily Martin……. ouch! I’m sorry….. it’s no fun whacking your head just as your eyes are opening….. I’m an Epsom salt user, it works wonders on bumps and bruises…. run a hand towel under very warm hot water, ring out, wrap 1 cup of salts in the towel place on bump. It will soothe and decrease the blood pocket form at the bump and will take the pain away in a 20 min. Application. Hope that helps!

To my vino enjoyers whom are going dry…… A friend of mine gave up the drink, by adding sparkling carbonated water to her wine. She increased the water as she decreased the wine until she was only drinking the water…. she also said the carbonation, helps with hunger. She doesn’t IF, but she is strict on her meal times. This helps her maintain her weight without counting calories. Maybe this could help you all…..

Well, my coffee cup is empty, time to get this house clean and those Christmas dec. down until next year!
    Cheers!

Should add that my extended fasts next week may include a small meal to my 1/4 tdee, maybe soup or small amount of family meal so no big hardship really. Seems like a cheat ha ha but may throw in a liquid only in the mix. Preparing myself mentally.

    Day 7, NFD, AZ USA.

Decided to go to the gym this morning before work so I packed my bag last night. After my workout I went to get dressed and realize I grabbed a pair of old jeans that are ridiculously snug. I feel like the button on m jeans is yelling “shame, shame, shame”. But on the good side it’s going to keep me from eating too much today because I can barely breathe!

    Day 7: Gloucestershire, UK: NFD.
    I’m still here…..but am I participating??
“The Case Against Sugar” arrived in the post today…..motivational bed time reading, I’m hoping.
Well done all of you who are doing well…HappyMargo….I’m SO impressed, no wonder you are so happy!
I haven’t dared weigh myself yet, so I have no idea if I’m maintaining or gaining…..but can probably guess. Hey-ho!

    Day 7-NSW-Australia
Sorry didn’t post yesterday both NFDs. Thanks emilymeg sleep has been an issue for decades but FD is making it a little harder. Finding that I’m not feeling very hungry at all on NFDs and I’m still making healthy choices but am eating some meals for the sake of it. It is only the first week so i will figure it out as i go along. I don’t think i will weight myself everyday – don’t want to get disheartened if there is not much movement. Maybe once a week just to see if I’m on track. Really need to up the exercise not sure how i will do it with work, the kids and everything else – walking an extra 30 mins a day at work. Things are going ok i think.
The joy of this forum is that we are extending our journey across the globe with some of us freezing and others sweltering in the heat – not matter where you are i hope your enjoying your day.

Day 7 – St Louis, MO USA – NFD

okay, guys and guys, today I have some questions for all of you that have the experience and I KNOW you are out there!

Thanks for allowing me to talk through these things with you…I have struggled with mixed feelings of excitement (I have lost 6.8 lbs in 6 days!!!???) with total fear of even saying that out loud because whenever I allowed myself to celebrate before I completely fell apart and lost motivation? Strange. So I have some things on my mind and would appreciate any thoughts/advice from this family of mine πŸ™‚

    1. For those of you that use the test strips to check for ketones – do you fall off the ketosis at a certain level and if so how many carbs seem to do it?

    2. Regarding strips – I am getting obsessed. I check my urine 4-5 times per day. I realize that isn’t a good idea yet in these early days I am also experimenting with what it takes to stay in ketosis as well as what it takes to fall out.

    3. I have started to fear to eat a little – and no worries I would never get to the point that this would become an issue I promise!!! – but this week the results have come not only from 3 FD but as @happymargo does – I often do an 18:6 on a NFD which isn’t too rough because skipping breakfast isn’t too hard for me to do – yet on those 18:6 days I stay around 1,000 calories with my TDEE being 1,800. So no wonder I am losing 1/2-1 lbs per day right!? But now I am afraid to go up to 1,800 fearing that I will gain? Does anyone else feel this way or have you felt that way in the past? Thoughts?

    4. Today is a NFD and I am going out with family to celebrate my birthday which was last week – I want to CHOW DOWN and not be afraid. I want a burger and fries or pizza or something with lots of carbs, etc etc but am afraid I will never stop if I allow myself this…yes, of course, I can’t live on 5-6,000 calories per week either.

Congratulations to all of you for a wonderful week – yes we’ve had some ups and downs but remember we are all checking in to this forum as we promised ourselves at the beginning of the month, we are keeping this WOL at the forefront of our minds and that in itself is a WIN!

Have a wonderful weekend and Stay Strong!

I’ve been struggling with the proverbial last 15 pounds for many years. I tried a modified version of 5:2 a couple of years ago, but I did not give the program enough time to work. I often would get within ten pounds of my weight goal and then revert to bad eating habits. I restarted the program again a few days ago. Unlike in the past, this effort feels different and more sustainable. I look forward to joining the 30-day Challenge.

    Day 7 : Cheshire, UK : NFD

@missymoomoo thank you for posting the youtube link of Dr Fung. Very helpful and motivating. I’ve only just started to read his book but not had the time to read as much as I would like. I shared the info with my OH and although he is very lean, he now sees the overall health benefits of fasting. Especially as we suspect he may be fat on the inside. Really good too as he has decided to leave breakfast until around lunchtime, which helps me as I can do without breakfast.

@at Congratulations at your prolonged fast! I’m impressed and inspired. Staying at target is one of my challenges. Not at target yet but hopefully, will be soon πŸ™‚

@happymargo So pleased for you after what you have been through. Enjoy! x

Have a great weekend everyone! We’ve been invited to dinner tonight and I’m cooking dinner for guests tomorow πŸ™‚

I intend to fast on Monday until Tuesday evening when we’re out to dinner again, then maybe fast Wednesday and Thursday.

    xoxo

Laddie….. I don’t know anything about the strips, so sorry on that but I can help with the eating part.

The dangers and the damage you will do by not eating, I am sure you know, so no lecture on that.

How ever, let’s give you some food for thought, to make you less afraid. This WOL is not based on not giving up what you love and enjoy, but to teach us on how to enjoy it without undoing what we worked so hard to accomplish. Eating hamburgers or fries or pizza or cake or this or that, is not going to hurt you. It actually may help you!

Look at that sentence one more time hamburgers or fries or pizza or cake or this or that….. See that one repeating word? That’s not a AND, that’s an OR, which means a choice! Choose one…… ONLY one….. AND pair it with something healthy, a salad, veg (fries are not a vegetable).

What I’m talking about is moderation, the difference between the word OR and AND.
OR is a choice….AND is automatic. See the difference.
Moderation is the choice of enjoy the things we love and incorporating them into a healthy diet, not using them a a remedy to cure all that bothers us. They are not a forbidden food that is there to taunt us!

Now, when I say they may help us, is such an odd statement because they can actually help us to lose some lbs. The great thing about our bodies, is that it adjusts to what we do, when we don’t eat our TDEE, is adjust by using our extra weight for fuel. When we eat, it stores it, it stores our excess…. for later. When we juggle our food, we confuse it….. so it ends up using our extra weight for fuel causing weight loss even at a higher caloric intake. Which is why, even the why just doing a 16:8 produces weight loss!

Having that burger OR that SLICE of pizza, is not going to hurt you. Just make sure, you enjoy it along with a healthier foods!

    I hope that helps…..

    Cheers!

Thanks for your tips for the beginners. Just have to wait that myΓΆs liver gets used to gluconeogenesis. I bought miso soup paste for better sodium balance. FD tomorrow.
