I so agree with you. I was in this group for a few months and we DO are each other’s comfort !

    3rd post–

re: 24 hour, dinner-to-dinner Fasting (that I described just above) That was the method I used to start out with Intermittent fasting. It made it invisible to my DH. On FD’s I could still sit down & eat a careful 500 calorie dinner & he’d never know that I had just consumed calorie-free liquids fasting the rest of the day.

Now it doesn’t matter, he sees my great strides in getting slim & feeling healthy. He’s finally on-board.

It took lots of education, talking about what I’ve learned through Mosley, Fung & Eenfeldt. Explaining all the additional health benefits of IF to him. DH “gets it” now and no longer hassles me. So the 36 hour & b2b Fasts are possible without his scrutiny or negative comments.

(Heck, I just came off a full 7 day Fast and all I got from DH was concern & reassurances that I was doing okay. Oddly, I had loads of energy. And after the 2nd day wasn’t even hungry. Just missed the habit of eating & taste of food. But it went so smoothly!)

Aussie day 5 and 6 couldn’t get on the site yesterday. FD today raining again looks like indoor cycling day today.weigh in tomorrow.

    Day 5 Ireland FD
So I held off food until this evening (phew)when I had an approx 500 cal meal with family. Was ok but as happymargo mentioned i really missed the habit of eating and taste of food during the day. Hunger was an issue, but came and went … as others have said it does.
Someone in an earlier post suggested sugar free chewing gum which was definitely a help. Also a good idea to be outside as much as possible walking dogs etc.
Not sure how fast days will go when I’m working as I felt my concentration was affected.
Only my second fast day ever so early days yet I guess!
Anyway back to normal tomorrow with NFD, will weigh in on Monday after 1 week of 5:2
    Hope everyone else going well.

    Day 6 NFD Gippsland – wt 79.5
    Doing really well!
Light dinner last night of an omelette with herbs, asparagus and smoked salmon.
Off to the gym this morning.
    Keep going everyone!!!

Bert – The list of pocketeers I believe are:

    Pissupoosa
    B2tF
    Bert

    Coda
    Well Rounded

Laddi210 – hooray for meeting your weekly goal

Sheam2567 – I believe the spreadsheet link is on p.9 of the posts

Re FDs – I find a 5 calorie 8 oz of chicken bouillon, in addition to coffee, tea & water, really helps. I now usually keep the remaining calories for the evening meal. That way I don’t go to bed hungry & sleep is no problem.

    Day 5 – Cumbria UK – FD

Today was not meant to be a FD but I was due to have my blood cholesterol check done late morning and the day was busy and it was mid afternoon before I realised that all I had so far was several cups of hot water and tea with a splash of skimmed milk so decided that I might as well make it a FD – cooked a vegetable tagine with couscous for the family – had a small bowl of the tagine only and came in well below 500cal for the day.

As someone else said this forum is busy and it is a bit difficult to stay on top of all the posts but it makes for very interesting reading – we are a real mixed bunch of experienced 5:2/ADF/ IF and some very new to this WOL and we all learn from each other and support each other.

@laddie10 – brilliant posts explaining the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis.

As @happymargo said on Page 9 the great thing about this WOL is that fasting can be fitted around our life! You can change your FD to fit in with social commitments, you can try doing a 16:8 or a variation of, if you cannot fast all day. Do not limit yourself socially because you’re fasting. Arrange your fasting schedule so that it fits in with your lifestyle.

For those struggling Fasting Does Become Easier!

Before joining this forum in November last year I had been doing a straightforward 5:2 WOL since January 2016 – which for me, meant nothing to eat after my evening meal but drinking plenty of calorie free drinks until a 500cal supper the next evening then fasting again until late morning the next day (I am not an early breakfast person preferring to “break my fast” late morning or even at lunchtime)
I also did my first b2b FDs with the support of this group and achieved my goal weight even ending the year slightly below that and maintaining it. This shows the power of the support/advice and strength that this group gives you.

My personal motto on this journey has been “Losing weight is a mind game – change your mind – change your body”
I see fasting as permanent part of my life going forward as it has allowed me to achieve my goals in weight loss and improved mental and physical health and it has shown me that I am much stronger than I thought I was!
And best of all I have learnt that I do not have to give up all the things I enjoy – a nice glass or two of wine – a lovely piece of cake …….etc. but I do not have to eat/drink it every day and in such large amounts to be satisfied.

If you change nothing then nothing will change!

Hello pocketeers as I unexpectedly did a FD today I will still join you tomorrow if my weight has not dropped too much (I give myself a flex of 1kg below/above my target) but even if do not fast I will be holding on your hands firmly

Day 6 Sunshine Coast Qld Australia: FD Due to FD morphing into NFD yesterday: “Some days are diamonds, some days are stone, Sometimes the hard times won’t leave me alone, Sometimes the North wind blows a chill in my bones, Some days are diamonds, Some Days are stone…John Denver” That was yesterday 😔

Welcome back Quebecoise. I remember you from last time; very distinctive name. I enjoyed your posts so good to see you here again.

Will try and upload updated sheet.

FD today – been ok, had about 650 cals so slightly more than should have, but it was first FD of year!

Feels good to fast tho – feels sharper in the afternoon when I’m fasting. I don’t get that post-lunch dip.

    Will be weighing in tomorrow.

Forgot to mention, I’m living just outside Cardiff in Wales (UK). Been -2C for most of day, which makes you hungrier too, I’m sure.

I hope this link gets you in

    6th Jan Day 6 NFD
    Queensland

Fast day went okay yesterday – no headache this time.
Feel really good – due to better eating, no alcohol and a bit of exercise!!

    London
    Day 4 | NFD
    Day 5 | NFD

Day 4 – skipped breakfast; lunch – sausage and onion toastie, Kettle’s veg crisps, tea with milk; Dinner – spicy pork curry with basmati rice and raw veg salad.

Day 5 – breakfast – porridge with pineapple and blueberries; lunch same as yesterday; Dinner – Leon’s haloumi wrap, baked Leon fries.

I probably went above my TDEE on both days.
This morning I felt really sluggish and my stomach was in some sort of distress (rumbly and gassy!) – I think its got used to less food and as soon as I overload it even slightly, it reacts.
My sugar cravings has been out of control, and I have succumbed to those as well 🙁 Likely another reason for the tummy upset.

I’ve downloaded the Kindle version of ‘A case against sugar’ and just started reading it. Thanks for the tip (? Fuvvie). I really need to cut down my sugar consumption – it’s not only making my FDs tougher, but also not helping with weight loss. I have a feeling I’ve hit a plateau around 64/65kg… but I think it’s too early to say. I’ll see how things go at the end of this month.

Pocket fast started as of 9pm tonight (bit of a late dinner after my yoga class) – we can do this team!
    You’re in my pocket 🙂

All the best pocketeers and everyone! Stay strong x

    @fuvvie Jan5: 3rd FD

Same as before I had black coffee, water and Diet Coke during the day and a 519 cal dinner (mushroom tortellini with sauce) I went over abit as I added in one piece of be good garlic baguette.

Will be doing my 4th FD tomorrow and trying VERY hard to stick to dry Jan as it’s the first Friday of the year!! If I can’t resist the wine then it will inevitably end up a NFD. But will keep u posted! Wish me luck! Fridays with no drinks is hard to imagine at the moment ☹️

Also my first weigh in tomorrow! I was up to ~68 at the worst point post Xmas food coma. 😞

Good night everyone! Hope you are all enjoying the best diet regime in th world! 🙂 I am instantly feeling so much better 🙂

    Day 5 Portugal FD

Second FD this week. Felt great. May have gone over by a few calories but not much. Very pleased with myself. I am thinking of doing a third fast tomorrow before I weigh on Saturday to see the damage done over the Christmas break. My visitors leave tomorrow am so should be easier to have a fixed routine. All the best for pocket fasters and everyone else fasting over next day or two.

great reading tonight – so many great posts!!

@back2thefuture – thanks for the link – great info!

@lany36 – how are you feeling now? def sounds like dehydration! in addition to all the water we are losing we are dumping salt like crazy – fill up!

@amigo – I was going to bed hungry too and waking from it – then I read about using up some of those limited calories by eating something with a high fat content. the carbs burn off too fast as does the protein but something like peanut butter or olive oil on your salad or good ole’ butter will keep the hunger pains away even with just a little

@august2024 – laughed out loud on your Freudian slip today…

    Stay strong everyone!

    Day 5 : Cheshire, UK : FD

This is my second fast day – b2b. My last meal was Tuesday evening and it’s been a liquid fast apart from some sugar free chewing gum. I will continue to fast tomorrow and break the liquid fast with a 500 cal dinner tomorrow evening, so hopefully it will be a b2b2b fast.

I love the lightness of being I feel when I haven’t eaten 🙂

Good luck pocketeers! I will be thinking of you if I struggle tomorrow.

    Day 5 NZ NFD
We’ve had visitors staying since last Friday so haven’t managed a FD. I have been mindful of my eating though (which is a breakthrough).I was going to fast tomorrow but the best laid plans! We are now going out with friends for lunch. Definitely fast on Sunday. The scales said 83kg this morning up .5 since FD. Considering the extra wine and yummies with guests I’m pretty pleased.

    Day 5….Florida…..NFD

So far a pretty good day…. busy as ever at work.
I have no idea what my calorie in take was, I’ll have to figure that out later.
Going to be fixing dinner soon, as I have to start with my pocket pals tonight at 8pm.

    Cheers!

    Day 5. Sussex, U.K.
    NFD.

2nd post: Yirrakurl, I went out with the family last night to RSL and they all had wine and invited me to, but I said I had a pact with 4 others to have a dry January. They were impressed (so was I). So think on that when you go to the first Friday of the year. Sparkling mineral water with lime looks like a G&T and can get you through. A tiny drop of Angostura bitters (although I do believe they contain a smudge of ETOH (alcohol) so maybe not. If you must, then you must, but I will be holding your hand or sitting on your shoulder(ouch! Not a good idea at 107.3kgs this morning).

    I’m with you 17Success.

Not sure that I welcomed you BigNige99. At the risk of repeating myself, glad to see you here. I can’t get over how cold you guys are and I’m in a sleeveless dress. It’s 22ºC here so far today and it is 09:05am

    Day 5 – Perth, W.Aust – NFD

Managed to do ok with my FD yesterday, turned out my friend has also been doing IF (has lost 5kg since Oct). So she had a nice healthy fish and salad meal organised for dinner last night, not sure of the total calorie count for the day, but I’d only had a 100cal lunch, so I reckon all up it was probably over, but still a light day.

    Hello UK day 5 nfd

Am just book marking this spot lol – have read page 9 so 10, 11 and to here on page 12. I’ll catch up over the weekend but nice to see/hear from Quebecoise again. I also see Helenf and Debster25 2 fellow country women have joined us.

I have my fellow pocketeers written down – I am fine during the day but find it has gone awry in evenings, also have got out of habit drinking water. How easy it is to go astray! Promise I’ll catch up with you all – my admiration Fuvvie keeping track of this very busy thread.

    D5 | NFD | Singapore

Ended up being a NFD, had orientation at my new hospital and they catered for us during break and lunch – tried to not overdo it!

Got home earlier than usual and managed to squeeze in a 7K run/walk – 2nd workout of the week! Now that I’m in sunny Singapore I really miss the outdoor runs that I used to do in London… miss the cold 🙁 never thought that I’d say that!

Dinner – small portion of fried brown rice with eggs, peas, corn and prawns, with a huge load of steamed green beans. Cheeky square of Ritter, one small nectarine after dinner.

Today I overshot my TDEE (2022 cal) – but I’m not too worried at all, for tmr is a FD! 🙂

Hahaha sorry for the confusion that ‘a punnet of bloobs’ caused!

    Day 6 FD
Water only today for a full 36hours until tomorrow maybe midday breaking fast I think

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions about my fluids and K+ supps I appreaciate the support. I feel fine again and totally able to complete today’s fast.

I feel for everyone talking about negative temperatures, I finsh work tonight and am finally on holiday for my Christmas break. Will be heading straight from work to the holiday house and asking in the sun for 2-3weeks.

Just need to keep the NFDs in check while I’m away, holidays always feel like I give myself mental permission to indulge in foods that I know don’t help my goals. Plan to relax and treat myself with good books and family time activities as much as possible rather than sweet treats.

    Day 6 – Tokyo Japan – FD #2 – 80.6kg

After the 3rd NFD my weight stabilized. I would be happier if it stabilized below 80kg, but I have to just take what I can get.

@pocket – w, I’m curious how your two days in row fasting goes. I may do that myself as I now have a trip next week and probably an overseas trip to the states within a month.

I’m concerned about travelling to the states because I won’t probably be able to fast because of too many work related events. However on the other hand I tend to find the food choices in the states a bit rough when living out of a hotel room, so I’ll probably eat less overall.

    Finally what is “pocket fasting?”

    Day 5 / Sweden / NFD

Dykask…… I think you are going to be okay when traveling over here to my neck of the woods, the states. In the last couple years, many restaurants including fast food, gas stations and employers have tried to bring a wider variety of healthy options on their menus. Plus, they also are adapting well to preparing foods tailored to your specific dietary needs. Just remember to ask! The worse thing anyone can say is no, I’m sorry we can’t do that. I ask every time when we go out that my food not be prepared with butter or my eggs fried in water. Also, I’m allergic to almonds, so if I want a dish that calls for them, I just ask they be made with out them and prepared in a different pan. I’ve never had a restaurant refuse these small requests.

Pocket fasting…. is a group of us who pick a day to fast together. We say pocket because each of us write down the participants on a piece of paper and carry it in our pockets. Then when feel as if we’re starting to slip or our mind wanders. We can pull out the slip of paper and read the names of everyone who is doing the same (aka…. in the same boat) and gain support and strength from it. It was a support thing that we developed I think in Nov., it really helps to have your supporters in your pocket when the waters get rough.

    Cheers!

    Day 6 – Melbourne – NFD
Best Wishes to All for a successful weekend, whatever you are aiming for!

Hello, I’ve been a non-joiner most of my life, but this looked so interesting. I am 74 and want to enjoy this part of my journey more. That means slimmer and more active. I had given up “dieting” because it made me so miserable and crabby. But. starting Jan. 1, I did two days of less than 400 calories and didn’t suffer. I noticed my appetite is slowly moving towards more nutritious food and that is a benefit.

I want to achieve a total fast one day a week and then eat light (fewer than 500 calories) the other “fast” day. But when trying for a total fast, I have felt light-headed in the afternoons so moved into low cal mode. Any tips about not eating anything for 36 hours? I’d really like to do that for the other benefits. Maybe I drink too much coffee on those days?

Count me in. I’m joining this lovely group.

Oh, I forgot to say I live in Wisconsin in the U.S., near a city nicknamed Fat City.

    Day 6 – Brisbane, Australia – NFD

A couple of observations from my last few days… yesterday’s FD was my easiest yet, nothing but a cup of tomato soup for dinner, and some milk in my coffee’s throughout the day… must have drunk about 5 litres of water, lol. It was also the most exercise I’ve done during a FD, went for a 4km run/walk with my kids in the morning and then 1.5 hours wheeling barrows of mulch around the yard in the afternoon… didn’t go to bed overly hungry, had a really good night sleep… so that’s a big positive.

On the negative side… I was the same weight this morning as I was after my second fast day last week. Doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but I’m not expecting to see much, if any weight loss when I do my official weigh in on Monday (seems to be a pretty good indicator)… does that matter? not really, but I’m feeling a little torn today about whether I should add in a 3rd fast day for this week, or just trust in the process making a difference over time and focus on making that process as sustainable as possible and not being impatient and just wanting things to hurry up (which could just make things harder and therefore maybe not sustainable over time).

…logically, focusing on the process is the answer (and there is plenty of NFD things I can look at to improve + improvements in fitness + I shouldn’t be worried about any week to week short-term things that are possibly meaningless).

Anyway, just a minor random crises I thought I’d write down to help clear my mind that might resonate with others – I’m sure plenty of you have come across these exact thoughts at some point.

Valderz….. just a quick note. I fast 3x a week, sometimes b2b but some FD, I see a loss and sometimes I don’t. To be honest our weight can fluctuate day to day, so I suggest not being to concerned about the daily weight, focus more on weekly weights. Better yet, ignore those darn things, they lie, cheat and steal, 90% of the time. The best determination of success for this WOL, is the way you feel both mentally and physically. Also, a big one is how do your clothes feel. The scale may stay the same but if you having to adjust the belt buckle hole, then you are becoming a healthier, sexier you. You ultimate goal Right?

    Hope that helps!

    @Vardez,
I’ve always thought there is a one day delay in what I do as it relates to the scale. Feast one day and the next – hey no gain!! But the day after that – it shows? So…give it another day and see? Maybe?

Also – any chance you need more fiber to get things moving in the right direction? Sounds awful but it definitely makes a difference for most of us.

    Stay strong!

    Still day 5

Fuvvie, the last link you sent didn’t work to see the spreadsheet. I was able to get into the link you sent out on p.9, I believe – which was the 2nd one you sent out.

    Day 5 – Canada – NFD

Just getting back into the swing of this WOL having fallen astray since Dec. 20. We were in the Caribbean over Christmas week, then sick for another week. Now it’s time to get serious once again. Fortunately the scales show only a 2 pound gain.

@fuvvie, I haven’t had a chance to read through all the posts yet, but I am assuming you have taken up the challenge of being our fearless leader for the month. Thank you. I will catch up with all the posts from Jan 1 to date on Saturday morning – my first FD for January.

    Day 6 – Auckland, NZ – NFD

Two FD down this week (Days 3 & 5), both days sitting at 492 cal, and felt fabulous. Even went over to see a GF last night – she had a glass of wine, and I had soda water with a squeeze of lemon in it. Divine.

Went out for lunch with husband and sons today, as it’s the end of my holiday (back to work Monday). Mindful of what I’m eating on NFD as well now, and tracking it in Fitbit app. Loving the posts here, and the sharing. Fuvvie, you sure have your hands full keeping track of this bunch! Thank you.

    Hi Bongbong,
I am 70 and new to this forum. The fasting for me is 600 to 700 calories a day on the fast days and then an easy day until the next FD. Three FD this week. No long 36 hour or more fast. 12 hours between 400 calorie breakfast and 300 calorie dinner. Tummy grumbling at night. Next day easy entree into next FD. Three days FD works for me. One pound or more gone each week. Eat within the recommendations.

Day 5 – NFD – NY State, USA (currently on vacation in Western Mexico)

    Good evening all,
Today was a NFD for me and I found that I ate low carb and in moderation. I love how fasting regulates the way I eat.
I’m enjoying posting daily in this thread. Thank you so much for this challenge!

    2nd post today

Hi Pocket fasters, I’ve decided to join you on the Friday fast starting now at 9 pm on the west coast of Canada. Please add me to your pocket lists

    Keep the fast!

Day 6 FD – Melbourne Aus
So my third fast day today, the first one wasn’t perfect I reckon I ended up eating 750 cals, but my second was perfect and this one is going ok too. I just tell myself if I’m perfect today then I can eat whatever it is I really want tomorrow. It’s early days but already my head is in a different space. I have been on one diet or another for close to 40 years. I was either on a diet or breaking a diet there was no in between. This time I went out bought a few things for my NFD which I could not have on a normal diet. Just some full fat yoghurts and a couple of chocolate mousses. The really encouraging thing is that I actually haven’t eaten any of them yet! I know they are there already so I’m not tempted to go to the shops on my way home from work, but by the time I’ve eaten dinner I don’t want them and I know I haven’t got to eat them up before the next “diet” starts which is the thinking that used to precede a binge. I’m so excited about the different thinking behind this eating plan ….but it’s still early days.

Day 6 NFD Country West Australia
Have only managed a couple of really good FDs since Christmas.

The best FD at 16:8 seems to be the go for me at present as I have had visitors since before Christmas and about to go on holiday with family for another 5 days!

I have told them all about 5:2 so they are very supportive. I guess I don’t make it easy for myself when I make a 3 litre capacity cassata – almost a litre of cream as the starting base!
Started today with the yummiest yabby and vegetable omelette. Delish!! Just have to try to stay under TDEE for the rest of the day.
Have a sister who has just started 5:2 this week so that is great.
This WOL certainly has stopped me from eating as much as I previously would have. I also feel full much more quickly.
Am mustering up the courage to do b2b fast later in January.
Thinking of all the pocketeers. Good fasting!

@bert1802 Thank you for the information and tips.

I know I’ll get by in the states. I’ve just become spoiled with how easy it is to eat healthy in Japan.

    Day 5 USA Hawaii NFD

UK day 6 NFD All going well and feeling very positive , even about a dry Friday ,which will be my first in a long time, in all honesty after Christmas/new year I’m looking forward to a break, will probably feel different next week , but who knows . Feeling energised and healthier , up early for a Pilates class which I’m looking forward to after a few weeks off.

Day 5: Pacific NW USA, 24 hour FD. To my pocket-fasting buddies: I found out today that a dinner out with friends had to re-schedule from Sat eve to Fri so my plans changed and I’m making it 2 consecutive 24 hour fast days instead of the 36 hour I had planned with you. Somehow I will get back on my 4:3! BTW – we are going out to a lovely restaurant!

Also hopeful that I will find time soon to catch up on my reading here!

    Hi again, Québécois!

    Day 6. Sussex, U.K.
    NFD.

    Morning

    Day 6 Surrey,UK FD

I have a plan for today. Hope I can stick to it. Psychologically I feel that if I can get through today – my 4th FD – then I will be ok going forward. I plan to weigh in and measure waist/hips tomorrow morning so that is more motivation
Yesterday’s NFD was a shocker. I gave in big time to temptation at work (some delicious – and I mean delicious – chocolate brownies) and then everything went to pot after that. I need group forgiveness!! I did do my 30 lengths in the pool though which made me feel slightly less awful.
Have a good day/night everyone wherever you are.

Day 6 Cornwall UK NFD 145lbs

So pleased down 3lbs! Slotted back into 5.2. I have discovered since starting with Codas May challenge last year that I can slot right back into this wol.

    Quebecoise welcome back!

Happy Margo – 7day fast is amazing, but with support of your DH. My DH is supportive but will temp me which is hard!

AT – love the your mindset!!
‘Losing weight is a mind game – change your mind, change your body!
This is so true and I’m going to print that out and put it in the kitchen!!

So the plan for today is fasting until supper as we have the grandchildren for a sleepover. They have reqested fish and chips and pancakes for breakfast . Fortunately I don’t like pancakes!

    Onwards and Down!!

    DAY 6 – BUCKS,UK – NFD

Tried to slot in an extra fd yesterday and only partially succeeded. Didn’t eat ’til 3pm – was at a Bridge event and had a tea – so ate 3 triangles of sandwiches and fortunately they must have been short on cake as we were presented with tiny squares – just a mouthful! – so had two,(which surprisingly was very satisfying and did the trick) then a healthy supper – but had a small piece of Xmas Cake – (how long does it last!!!!) I am trying OOlong tea, which has hidden properties – supposedly – good for weight loss – but it has a lot of caffeine and kept me awake – so I will have my last cup at 5pm from now on. Still, weighed myself this morning, and had lost weight since a previous weigh in so it’s all looking good. I am so enjoying this WOE as it does keep one in check on nfd’s and so satisfying knowing you have controlled your eating for the day – and not done the usual binge. I might even end the month with a halo!!!!

    Day 6 – Sydney – NFD

Yesterday was a NFD, and I lost it… ate a days worth of calories in snacks alone. Reasoning: Feeling sad (loss of a loved one) and enjoying munching while reading.

Today was possibly going to be a fast day, but my head was not in the right place. I didn’t track anything, but feel like I am well within my TDEE so happy with that.

Not sure what’s going to happen this next week. I’m volunteering leading the youth program and at a conference for 8 days, and spending two days with extended family somewhere in there. I might try 16:8 or something along those lines as I don’t imagine I will get a full fast day in, with the social nature of meal-times.
