  • Georgia/USA/Day 14/ FD:

I woke up craving this morning. I seem to go back na d forth when it gets close to FD’s. I’m enjoying my results so much that I refuse to give in to the cravings. Strange, I thought that they would subside at this point in my program. I guess its natural? I’m planning on eating my calories for dinner. One of my medications requires 500 calories for full absorption. So I’ll be waiting to eat something right before bedtime. I haven’t been going the entire day without at least a small snack, so we’ll see how this goes.

    Day 14 – London, UK, – FD

Getting very confused with pepole talking about the 36 hour fasters. Aren’t we all 36h fasting? I have a meal at 8pm and then break my fast with breakfast at 8pm, 2 days later (36 hours). Isn’t that what we are all doing? I’ve only been doing this for 2 weeks, so I may well be doing this all wrong.

    Day 14 – Georgia, US – NFD

    Day 14 Second post

@richard67 – no, not everyone is doing a 36h fast. This is only 1 form of fasting, among many. People who do 5:2 diet as Dr Mosley did it, take 500cals on a FD 2x per week – so most people take some calories on FDs as opposed to doing a water/liquid-only fast.
Going for 36h calorie-free is not easy for most people. I did 5:2 to start with and eased my self into 36h fasts.

Looks like you’ve indeed been doing a 36-fast weekly. If you’re comfortable doing it that way, great! There isn’t one particular way of fasting.

@richard67 Don’t be confused, you’re correct: classic 5:2 requires two non-consecutive 36hr periods during which you eat less than 1/4 of your TDEE. So many people on this thread are doing different variants that I guess the Friday Fasters just wanted to highlight what they were doing. If it’s working for you, keep doing it!

    Day 14 USA (Illinois) NFD

Busy day planned, in fact this whole week. I am president and direct a local Choral Society, and our concert is Sunday afternoon, November 20. Final rehearsals etc. this week. I hope the new dress I ordered from Zulily arrives. It’s a joy getting new (smaller) clothes!

    Onward and downward ~~

    Day 14 – Canada – FD

Tomorrow is weigh in day and I am so curious. I haven’t weighed myself for a week. Congratulations to everyone who completed the 36 hour fast. I would like to try that but I don’t feel I’m quite at that point just yet. Maybe in December I’ll hop on board. I do enjoy the fast day though and feel very energized and focussed on my goal. Following this form is such a help.

Thinking of everyone in New Zealand going through this stressful time.

Hi all UK day 14 FD

@richard67 yes you are correct but this was a Friday fast day (party) and we were just looking for others doing it at same time for support. It is easier to stick to your guns when you know others are doing it at same time. While some stuck to liquid only ie bone broth others had their 1/4 Tdee. There are variants of how some people fit in fasts but if it’s working for you as and… exhale says keep doing it.

Bert1802 – if you read Happymargo’s post you can see many reasons to stay on the wagon

Mflood023 – can you share – it may be the thought is more appealing than the actual item – would someone share a milkshake with you – so you can have a taste without the whole thing. Sometimes when I want a dessert if I take a spoonful or two that is enough for me not to feel I have missed out and my OH can have the rest. Failing that fast before and fast after and you miss out on nothing – enjoy

Day 14 Florida USA NFD. Good morning sitting here in sunny South Florida waiting for the tides to creast. expecting it to come over the the wall and onto the lawns hopefully not into anyone’s apartment on the first floor – with the super moon and the high tide @ 8:38 am. – could be a scary morning
. So thrilled to be on my back to back fast last five days have been tough way too much alcohol and lax food choices.
Sending good positive thoughts to all our friends in New Zealand.

@songbirdme – that’s a great website for inspiration. Mind you, I’m on a FD and the first thing I thought when I opened the page was ‘yum… tomato…’ (!) Good luck with rehearsals!

Hi, this is Kicki, I have started two weeks ago. Can I still join you all? I struggle to stick to 500 cal daily that’s why I had two weeks of 3:4, which feels good. Can I get some advice, please, how strict you are on your ‘off’ days? Are you tracking on those days?
I have to loose 11 kg and want to loose at least 2 kg a month.

    DAY 14,FD,Canada
Woke up feeling over full from party last nite. Looking forward to my fast today.

    Day 14 : Cheshire, UK : FD

Attempting a long overdue fast day.

    Day 14 | Ohio, USA | FD

A much-needed fast day. And considering how late I snacked last night, I really shouldn’t be hungry at all.

    Have a good day all.

    NYC, Day 14, FD, 120.7

Spent a long weekend with friends. Lots of food and alcohol. No guilt as I know I will just slide into my Monday morning fast.

    Second post today. West Oz.
I am a bit confused … Richard 67 – isn’t 8pm to 8pm 2 days later a 48 hour period? You said you were going to break your fast at 8pm 2 days after starting with breakfast. Did you mean 8 am? Looking forward to breaking my fast at 7am tomorrow. OH has just told me I look pale so I’m off to bed.

    Day 14 | FD | Bucks UK

Feels like I’ve been for a wee 100 times today πŸ˜•

Day 13, US, NFD. Day 14 NFD. Trying to maintain.

    Day 14|FD| Toronto
Today is World Diabetes Day; please take care of your health as Diabetes is now at epidemic levels globally.

    Day 14– Colorado, USA– FD

Boy, do I enjoy my NFD weekends!
Out for breakfast with DH (Mon-Friday I usually skip breakfast altogether)
& then the Red Wine with dinners too.

Right now enjoying a hot cup of homemade Chicken Soup, thinned down with loads of extra bone broth.
Feels so hearty & filling! (Enough for me to take meds + supplements with no tummy troubles.)

Hope everyone has a terrific day!

    US SC Day 14 FD

    Have a good day all.

Day 14: Gloucestershire, UK: Fast-day turned non fast day?
I went about 24 hours with no food, but after a particularly difficult and stressful day at the Royal Mail today, I started eating at 5pm, would you believe. I felt SO hungry for something. And once I started…well, I overdid it a bit.

    Day14/NFD/Georgia, USA
What an awesome day, I know it’s been 14 days but I’m down 2 pounds

    Day 14 FD
I’ve had no internet for a few days, sorry I wasn’t able to post. I’m hoping my fast day goes well. It kind of snuck up on me and I wasn’t completely prepared.

    Day 14 UK NFD

Was meant to be a FD but had a hungry day today and instead of reaching for the porridge I reached for the sweets, so downward spiral today, however it’s one day and I will have to be extra good tomorrow!

Was so looking forward to the 2 week mark, however tomorrow is the half way mark so gonna make that a brilliant FD!

Good luck all and if like me u had a slip, it will be one day out of thirty for the November challenge. Still time to remedy!

    Day 14 Cornwall UK FD

My thoughts are with those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in the north of south island NZ can’t believe the pictures of landslides taking out rail and roads. I love Kiakoura so sad.

A BIG YEH for me a successful fast day at last! Kept really busy. I visited a friend I hadn’t seen for a year, so just talked for hours!! I haven’t felt hungry and had a bowl of steamed kale with chicken, tomatoes and mushrooms very yummy and an orange.

Exercise bike and pilates this morning and a walk this afternoon.

Tomorrow will try to have another fast day the join with coda for Friday fast.

I plan to weigh on wednesday morning and will measure. I haven’t been on the scales for quite a while so quite scary!

    Action hero – great post!

Onward and DOWN! Good luck all x

    Day 14- Florida USA-NFD

Just checking in, still here, paying attention to my calorie intake.

    Day 14, Gozo, Malta, FD

Today I had an extra mini savoury muffin with my 500 calorie allowance. I’ll still call it a FD and will refrain from baking muffins on FD s. The scales were kind this morning after yesterday’s Chinese food. I’m still below target weight.

    Good evening/ night everyone.

    UK day 14 NFD

Day 14 (again) — Colorado, USA– (still) a FD

Ugh. This Fast Day feels extra tough. Why?!?

As a wrote above, I filled up my tummy (so I could take my meds) with homemade Chicken Soup, thinned out with loads of bone broth.

Seemed hearty & filling at the time, but now I’m feeling so HUNGRY! Stomach is rumbling so loudly!

I’m trying to distract myself reading Dr. Jason Fung’s Complete Guide to Fasting (also flipping thru his book Obesity Code) & his web-site https://intensivedietarymanagement.com

Also reading the success stories on Mark Sisson’s site http://www.marksdailyapple.com

And keep checking back here to get extra motivation from this wonderful community. I keep repeating to myself, “If you still want that tomorrow, you can have it then. Just not today.”

When I started 5:2 Fasting sounded crazy & impossible. Then with practice Fast Days became easier to handle & I even looked forward to them. Then today BAM, it’s been really HARD again.

Has this ever happened to you? How did you overcome or get thru it?

    Day 14 London UK FD

Very overindulgent weekend to claw back so 23 hours no food and then all my calories on a lovely greek salad and coke zero. Next fast day will be thursday for me.

Hahahaha…. me too they are my weakness!! Well that and wine, cheese, cakes etc…

Day 14 SW WA USA FD
Enjoying some bone broth to help me through the day.
Linda Sue good for getting those last 10 off. How much hAve you lost in total?

Day 15 Wellington New Zealand FD

First it was the earth shaking now the skys have opened up and we have torrential rain with flooding around Wellington and lower parts of our North Island. What has happened to the world these past couple of weeks?

Thank you everyone on here from around the world sending positive thoughts to our Kiwi residents affected by mother nature and her ways of reminding us that she is in charge and we are but mere pawns in her game of life.

Our Inspiration for today is from an old favorite of mine, a car salesman called Joe Girard who was a legend in his time. He says:

β€œThe elevator to success is out of order. You’ll have to use the stairs….one step at a time.” ~Joe Girard

How well this summarises our journey to a new WOL. There is no easy way to achieve our goals, only our efforts, one day, one week, one month at a time.

So lets all take todays one step in the knowledge that it’s one step closer to our goals.

Take care everyone, stay dry, safe and strong all the Kiwis on here and lets hope tomorrow we will see the sun shining again. Cheers Mike

Day 14 Brisbane , Australia FD
Sorry, couldn’t get my internet to work last night so a day late. Did my weekly weigh in yesterday, had dropped 900 g which wasn’t as much as I’d have liked, but definitely losing cm around my middle. So happy with that.
Feeling for our cousins over the ditch – I was in NZ hiking 5 weeks ago & couldn’t get over how Christchurch still had an enourmous amount of damage from the last major earthquakes.

Beautiful, country, beautiful people, sending much love & positive energy.

Australia Day 15 NFD close to finishing my liquid-only fast and feeling really happy. Also very tired- one of the puppies took 2 hours to settle and then up again at 6am. Hard work but gorgeous πŸ™‚

    Day 15 – Melbourne – NFD
Tough FD yesterday, I felt Famished most of the day (same as you HappyMargo – tough one!). The good news is that I stuck to it and managed less than 400cal and the other good news is that this forum helped immensely. I turned to it several times, and reading of other’s successes and struggles really helped, thanks All. Have just had a thin slice of wholemeal toast, no butter, and an egg, and milky coffee and now I feel Very Full!
Happy Tuesday and Best Wishes to everyone for another successful day in learning/embedding new, healthy eating habits for life. Thanks, ActionHero for the reminder, can’t have them too often: ‘success…one step at a time’.

    Day 14; Toronto; FD

It’s a fast day! Doing ok, but it’s only 5 pm. It’s at 9 pm or later that I start to go stark raving bonkers and want to eat everything in my fridge.
Just drink more tea, drink more veg broth, eat a fruit, eat a cup of veggies.
    And so it goes.

    Day 15 NFD NZ
Yesterday’s fast was the usual slight hunger but with a big headache and extreme tiredness. Water intake wasn’t good enough obviously and I dealt with the tiredness by getting an early (9:45pm) night although if I hadn’t had things to do it would easily have been 8:30pm!!!
Small sacrifice of family time but my clothes tell me this wol is working for me and I feel so much better mentally and physically it is worth the few side effects.
Broke my fast today after 40hours, wasn’t that hungry but I did a heavy strength training this morning and I needed to refuel my muscles for growth and repair etc etc.
Still having aftershocks around NZ but nothing as far south as we are so I’m grateful for that today.

    West Australia Day 15 NFD
FINALLY!!! Had a FD that went OK. Started 7pm Sunday night, drank fluids yesterday until about 3pm and then it hit me – felt like a space cadet and dizzy every time I bent over. Also felt the dreaded headache .Relented and had half a banana, kept the other half until dinner at 6pm last night. Cut back on teas and coffees – MFP says 1 cup of tea has 100 calories??!!! which is what I was drinking on FDs so yesterday had 1 cup white tea, 1 cup black tea, 2 flat white coffees @ 54 calories each plus the banana and numerous glasses of water- just kept under 500 calories but would have liked to have done liquid only. Alas my body seems destined not to handle this.
Anyway, the scales liked it and I had lost 1 kg in 24 hours. I realise it is fluid loss and the 1 kg will probably be back tomorrow but it is very motivating.
Don’t feel that hungry following FD so wondering whether to continue until lunch which will definitely break the fast as it is a ‘wind -up ‘ lunch for a club.
With you MissJ, my kidneys function extremely well on FDs!
Kicki, welcome to this community. It is very supportive and I absolutely couldn’t have done this without them and their support. It’s kinda nice knowing there are people all over the world connected by a desire to be healthier. On NFDs I find I have to be really strict or it is easy to derail the good work of a FD. Calories are sneaky little things and creep in without us even being aware sometimes!
Have a good day – baby steps one at a time.

    Days 13&14 Portugal both NFD

Hectic Sunday and Monday. Haven’t had time to check in and read all posts. Out for lunch both Sunday and Monday ….not good for the calorie count…way over Tdee. Looking forward to having a FD tomorrow. Going to try hard to make it count.

    Day 14…. Florida….. FD

So, I found myself today, holding on to the wagon, for couple different reasons. First, I really enjoy fast days. I really enjoy not putting much thought into figuring out what to eat. For lunch 1cup of green beans and mandarin oranges. Second, I said no not once, not twice but three times to cake, cookies and sweets! Three times, I don’t know why I was asked so many times but no was the answer every time. Even when it was said it’s only one cookie…. what can it hurt! I said my 10 lb weight loss taste a whole lot better than that cookie will…..
Maybe it was the temptation, I need to show me, that hanging on is the best thing right Now!
Thanks for reading and encouraging that you all did! Funny how writing down how you feel helps!
    Thanks!

2nd post change of plan fd morphed a bit lol not to worry

@kicki welcome just jump in where we are day of challenge = day of month

@lilymartin surely tea has just a splash of milk no way 100 cals

@bert well done for staying on wagon and staying strong in the face of temptation.

Day 14 – FD, (also day 12 and day 13 NFDs) its been a hard day today as very busy at work with audits.

Have managed today on water and 2 cups of tea with a dash of milk. Feel cold though and have felt freezing all day πŸ˜” Am trying a 36 hour fast and will eat tomorrow morning at breakfast time and see how I feel.

How have others found fasting for 36 hours and does it make much difference to weight loss.

Time for bed and let’s hope I can sleep tonight!!

Day 14: Pacific NW USA: beginning day of my b2b Mon and Tues FD’s (48 hours), will weigh Wed for my half-way weigh in!

Thank you November Challengers for your consistent daily posts – especially when you log on in alphabetical order. (Joke!)

Welcome Kicki – we post every day on this challenge starting with the day of the month that we are writing, where we are located and whether it’s a FD or NFD for you.

Along with Lany so glad to have heard from Action, WACM, LEW and Time4me in NZ that you are safe AND continuing your IF!

If you missed reading all the recent posts I would like to recommend @mumsy63‘s very succinct explanations (on our thread pg 25, 13 Nov, 9:45 PM). Whether those are the methods you use or not it may be food for thought and may answer some questions about why we shed fat some days and not others.

Bert – also your evaluation of the references linked to @songbirdme‘s (above, this pg 26) resource article that listed benefits of IF. That’s enough for me to cast the benefit of the doubt toward continuing IF!

HappyM – I sympathized with your question about those impossible to ignore, difficult days. With hind sight I can say that difficult days pass and are only a minor blip in the big picture. In the moment though they can seem to be opposite-world, something-has-taken-over-my-body days. I try, at the least, if I find I have no power over the dragon, if I’m going to indulge I try to choose from low-carb foods that give me as much nutrient values as possible, some fat and some protein. Blueberries and creme fraiche, veggie sticks dipped in nut butters, avacado, cherry tomatoes, sliced turkey, prosiuitto, or 80% dark chocolate. And then hope the dragon goes to sleep!

    2nd post.
Thanks for reply coda. Yes that’s what I am trying to question/ confirm. I assumed black tea would be 0 or very few calories and a splash of milk = maybe 30 – 50 at most as not a huge amount. But when I looked it up on MFP ‘ tea – 1 cup 100 calories’ ! Perhaps it was some special kind of tea? Would love clarification from anyone who knows.πŸ€”

Hi @lilymartin – according to http://www.calorieking.com.au a cup of tea with 30 mls of whole milk is 22 calories.I hope that makes you feel better! xx

    3rd post.
Thanks Hannah that definitely does make me feel better and seems much more realistic. Still fasting from Sunday night so will go and make a nice cuppa! Am out to lunch today so it will be 41 hours between meals. After fast not vey hungry ATM but know as soon as I take a bite the insulin etc will ramp up and I probably will be. 😎 ( 36C here at present and very hot)

    Day 14 E. Canada NFD

First up: good to hear that the Kiwis are posting and hoping that the earth settles down soon.

Action Hero – loved the elevator to success out of order quote.

@bert – “what can it hurt” – your mindfulness, that’s what. And good for you for keeping yours.

Happy Margo – my suggestion is to see Fast Day as Yay Day. It’s a day to reward yourself (“yay me!”) with as many non-food rewards as possible. Including mental strokes (“yay me!”)for everything you do ‘right’. But b2tf is right, you need an ‘in case of emergency break glass’ food item that is nourishing and low carb. Mine was sunflower seeds. Yes, it took me over my 500 cal limit (I’ve decided not to do 1/4 TDEE, as too restrictive for me) but in the scheme of things, it was the right thing to do. Or you could go for a banana, or tomato with cottage cheese. You’ll find what works.

    **********

Today I ate to TDEE and enjoyed every bit.
Breakfast 180, brewed white with a friend 150 st. 330, off for a 25 km bike ride, back for lunch – had 2/3 of a eggs-on-toast dish with side of tiny spuds and kale – 300 st 630, then enjoyed a molasses cookie with cranberry 350, so not an everyday thing but boy did I enjoy it – st 980, then supper of 1 C. chili but no bread, so 300 st. 1280, then later a banana with 2 T. Canned light whipped cream, 160 for 1440, felt very satisfied all day.
