  • Day 13- Florida USA-FD

I have too many NFD’s where I am consuming too much. Very difficult to have lunch out and dinner out and stay under TDEE’s. I like to eat during the day if I am active and then have a light dinner.
doesnt really work if I am going out to dinner night after night. Difficult to estimate calories in restaurant food.

I hope to make up with an extra FD

Congrats to all you 36hr fasters!!!

Day 14 Wellington, New Zealand Definitely a NFD here today

I posted my day 13 at 11:30pm last night, was in bed listening to 12pm news then bang the first one hit long and sharp at 12:02am NZ time. Since then there have been numerous after shocks.

The Wellington City CBD is closed today being assessed for damage. The worst hit area is our South Island north of Christchurch. There have been a couple of causalities reported however there are also some inland country towns still inaccessable so still waiting to hear reports from those areas. Thanks everyone who is awake other side of the world for your kind thoughts and best wishes.

    Day 12 E. Canada FD

Well, here I am. First, thank you back2thefuture for the positive feedback.

And a big ‘yay’ out there for those in need of it, because I need it today.

Next: a special well wish to our New Zealand friends, I hope it wasn’t as bad as back in 2011.

Confession time now. Bran flakes 180, 1/2 banana 40, went for a 30 km bike ride (gorgeous day) and then had a brewed white at around 13:00, 150.

Now, what happened by 16:00 was that I should have remembered that hunger is like a wave, not a wall, because I might otherwise have made it home from the grocery store without wolfing sunflower seeds, 150 cals worth at least, bringing us to 520 as a st. And once home had some p.b and two very small slices of a roll, we’ll say 80, so we’re at 600 cals for the day.

I am still not entirely convinced of the health benefits of fasting, still think the research is incomplete, but the psychological benefits I am convinced of. Mindfulness. Shrinking the stomach. Remembering what real hunger – not just boredom – feels like. The reminder that one doesn’t die, if one lets oneself get a little hungry.

Now for the ‘yays’ since I need them on a FD. FDs need some pleasure in them. Yays will do that. So:

I biked an extra 10 km, which I loved… and I did stretches where I was breathing hard, yay me. I didn’t go to a cafe for breakfast, yay me. I stuck to the idea of a fast through lunch time. Yay me. Okay, I ate sunflower seeds, but these are not like eating cookies. Lots of nutrition in them, even if high calorie. So, yay me.

Wishing everyone else a ‘yay’ so you all can feel encouraged.

A fast day should be a day for us all to say, yay me. Because at least once a week, we should be doing that.

    Thoughts to all in NZ

LilyMartin – would it be feasible to fast until your evening meal and have your tdee while out socialising and if not out next day have your 500 or below at your evening meal, so a fast after a night out? If you look at your calendar see where you can save your tdee for socialising and days for fasting. Unless off course you are going to be out everyday for December. You could offer to drive on one or two nights so drink will be taken out of the equation? Wise choices could be made and instead of having everything, only have the things that you really really love. Don’t sit beside the nuts and or Crisps and drink water between alcoholic drinks.

AnneMarilyn I count for a bowl of bone broth about 2 cups 144-150 but this is only a rough estimate

Bert just keep doing it, you will find your mojo. Stay off the scales for a while and take a day at a time

    Day 14 – Melbourne – FD Monday
Prayers for all in Beautiful New Zealand. I am Kiwi-born although been in Aus for 35 years – I grew up in the Hutt Valley near Windy Wellington and it was shaky, but I don’t think as shaky as it has been the last 15 years?? I stayed with people in Kelson (right smack on the fault line out of Wellington, I believe), a few years back and half their garage was packed up with emergency gear, ‘in case’. I was shocked, as it had never felt so worrying while I was growing up, even to the adults, I’m pretty sure.

B2F – Thank You! “it takes awhile for your brain to figure out that you ate” that’s exactly what I’ll say to myself after dinner time (my worst time to snack)- as a reminder to just let it be for awhile.

Hang in there, Happy Fasters, Good Day vibes out to all.

Whoops with all the excitement here today I forgot my duties. Here’s our inspirational Thought for the Day from one of our most famous New Zealanders, Sir Ed Hillary:

β€œIt is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” ~Sir Edmund Hillary

So often we let ourselves down by self sabotage and non belief in our ability to succeed. We let that little voice in our minds tell us every negative thought it can muster up and because we aren’t strong we believe those thoughts and we let them dominant our outcomes.

Instead make sure we feed our minds with positive thoughts, take all the negative language out of your vocab and start living life positively.

One massive word to eliminate is the word “BUT” When we use this word it totally negates everything we have said just prior to that word.

For example: “I had an amazing FD yesterday BUT today is so hard” This example takes all the focus away from your positive FD result of yesterday and immediately focusses on the negative of how we feel today. A better statement would be “I had an amazing FD yesterday AND today is just as easy” See the difference and how that would make you feel.

So let’s all take the “BUTS” out of our lives and see how more positive our attitudes become and how much easier our journey to skinny will become. Take care everyone. Mike

    D14 Melboure, Australia, FD
A combination of prawn risotto, arancini, calamari, lamb and wine dinner with friends last night. Not going anywhere near the scales today!

Mflood023 – The purpose of fasting is to get those insulin levels really low. This necessarily means not consuming anything that will increase insulin levels. Ideally fasting should be water fasting (or any other fluids which do not generate an insulin response like green tea etc.). Celery is low in carbs – about 3gm in 100gm but half of those carbs are in insoluble fibre so in effect, only 1.5gm of digestible carb so yes, this is a great snack!

As we know every calorie is not created equal and this is especially relevant when trying to loose weight. For example when trying to stick to 1/4 TDEE on FD it is of FAR more benefit to consume the calorie load ( say 500 cals) in low carb, moderate protein and high fat foods – yes don’t fear fats – they do not cause insulin spikes. So to have 500 cals of a pasta or rice dish will cause a greater insulin spike than 500 cals of bacon and eggs (no toast, of course). The result of this insulin spike will mean the pasta/rice/carb group will store more fat and will not be in a fat burning mode. The results will obviously reflected on the scales.

Similar when consuming the 500 cals on NFD, it is far better to consume these in one meal rather than spread this out throughout the day. Eg it is better to fast from dinner the night before through to dinner the next day (so in fact a 24 hr fast) then have your 500 cal in one meal at dinner. You will have had all the benefit of a 24 fast(ie low insulin). Unfortunately those that graze all day (albeit still sticking to the 500 cals) will not see the same rsults as those eating the same calorie load in one meal at the end of the day. It takes a very small amount of carb food to spark off an insulin response and therefore kick you out of fat burning mode and into fat storing mode.

    AnneMarilyn-
Hard to say precisely how many calories are in bone broth since each recipe is so individual.
But I found this for Beef Bone Broth, might be a nice basic guideline:

    Nutrition Facts
    Amount Per Serving (1 cup)

    Calories 66
    Total Fat 4.0 g
    Saturated Fat 1.7 g
    Polyunsaturated Fat 0.0 g
    Monounsaturated Fat 0.0 g
    Cholesterol 18.1 mg
    Sodium 232.8 mg
    Potassium 10.4 mg
    Total Carbohydrate 0.8 g
    Dietary Fiber 0.1 g
    Sugars 0.0 g
    Protein 6.4 g

    Hope this helps!

So I see Beef bone broth for 66 calories/ cup.

I use “Lose It” app to track my calories (it’s very similar to My Fitness Pal.) It clocks Chicken Bone Broth at 36 cals/ cup serving.

B2tF– you are doing a fantastic job leading this giant mob of 5:2 enthusiasts! (You had a great teacher in Coda!)

ActionHero– your inspirational quotes (& insightful analysis) are very motivating!

You’ve got me looking for ways to put a positive spin on all my self-talk. When I catch myself using negative phrasing, I have been literally picturing a big red “Stop” sign.
Then I re-word the thought in a positive note… The catch is: I have to say the positive phrase OUT LOUD! It more effectively drowns out (or silences) the first, unfriendly thought! πŸ™‚

It really works beautifully! And I wouldn’t even have thought of it without reading your posts.
    So thank you!

    Happy Mango,

Congrats on that amazing weight loss!

    Day 13 UK NFD

I love Moth54 yay me post.

Instead of focusing on what I want to eat, and not through hunger as I am not hungry! FD’s have helped me recognise that, Ishould be focussing on all the things I overcome or do right. Positive thinking works for me.

Today good day food wise, and I did say no to every yummy thing in the shop that I wanted and didn’t need. Although don’t get me wrong I do say yes to lovely things but am learning limit myself and not feel that I have all in one sitting when really one or two bites will do.

Self control is my theme of the week. This is usually where I start to lose interest and struggle, determined to break that cycle.

Thinking of the NZ people in our team x

    2nd post.

Action hero love your inspirational posts of the day! πŸ˜€

    Day 13 USA Hawaii NFD

Day 14 Country West Australia FD
Thoughts are with those in New Zealand – really hope all is OK with Kiwis on this forum and their loved ones and of course all other New Zealanders. (Saved up as a student and it was my first holiday destination that I chose myself. Beautiful country and people – and incidentally the BEST ice-cream I have ever tasted !!.)
Thanks for all the advice on this forum and all those across the world sharing the journey, insights and wisdom. Hope today is a good day for all – especially those going through trials of any kind. Peace.✌️
Coda, very sound advice and yes I do try to do this. I like a nice drop of white wine and we have some fantastic wine here in south WA, however I make a concerted effort to go several days wine free for all the health benefits. I find a glass of soda water and lime helps. I don’t overdo this either as I know soda can have side effects leaching calcium from bones.πŸ™
I do sometimes try to fast from one evening meal til the next evening meal but prefer food in the am . If I don’t have something for breakfast I feel crook and get a bit light headed and spaced out.
We don’t have functions every day in December but the last 2 weeks can be pretty heckers with almost daily celebrations!
Have a good day everyone. Thank you all for your support and helping keep me on track – can’t believe I’ve been doing it for 14 days !
Looking forward to seeing the biggest ‘super moon’ in 70 years tonight.πŸ˜‹

    Day 13, NYC, NFD

I think i might have forgotten to login yesterday.
I notice that all goes well and I eat within my TDEE but then the danger zone is when its late and I am tired and suddenly I want to snack on something.
So i have to watch that.
Today I am eating well below my TDEE because i do not feel well so for some reason I don’t feel like eating much.

and yes hope everyone here on the forum from NZ is ok.

Hugs and prayers for New Zealand and all of you here who are there — and friends or family there as well.

Day 13. Florida USA NFD tough week I am not a big drinker – couple glasses of wine if out to dinner. This week’s has been drinks everty single day! Feel like I could join an AA group. Stops now !!! Mon/Tues back to back fast … brunch Wednesday. 64 hrs plus. – so looking forward to it. Stay strongβ™‘

sending good thoughts to our friends in New Zealand

    Day 13 – London,UK – NFD

Just checking in at the end of a very hectic day!! Hope you’re all doing well, will check in tomorrow

    Day 13|NFD|Toronto
Battle of the Buffet table today;sigh… I lost but not as bad as in past and it was just a battle, not the war!

Day 14 – New Zealand – Fast Day
I am further south than the Earthquakes that shook further up the South Island, so I didn’t feel it down here. My thoughts are with everyone affected.

Australia Day 14 FD – trying for a liquid only until at least dinner and maybe for 36 hours if I can hold out.

    2nd post.

Today’s FD went well! My meal was around 6PM and I had a tuna sandwich with cucumbers and spinach, plus steamed broccoli and celery on the side! It was delicious and all in all should be ~ 400 calories for the day (if that!) Also went to the gym. Ran 2 miles and did chest and back exercises! SO very good! Tomorrow is a NFD for me but we have plans to eat at NN Burger of Virginia for my last work trip of the season. (Has anyone been there??) I’ve never had it but apparently their milkshakes are to die for. I think I’ll go to the gym before we head out to get about 4 miles in. I’d like to cut back some of the calories I’ll be consuming tomorrow. This is a one time thing for sure, but I’m curious, how would you all handle this situation?

    Thanks!

Day 14 / Tweed Coast Australia / FD

Yesterday I read through some of the previous posts and ran across the mid-challenge scheduled group fast day which involved 12 or 13 members. It was heartening to read of all the support among those participating and from those on the side. I’m reminded about how much more difficult this WOL would be without this forum.

My fast day today has been relatively easy so far. Somehow my body has just slotted into the rhythm like, well, something that has been expected.

    Day 13 – Los Angeles – FD

Sorry I missed checking in yesterday. Today was a fast day. May have overdone the exercise thing a little with about 7 miles of jogging but feeling better now. Otherwise, day went great.

As I didn’t log in yesterday, I’ll just say the day went well and I’m happy to report that the scale is moving in the right direction.

Thanks for the support and I’ll see you tomorrow.

    Day 14, Australia, fd

@itsmyturn I’m planning a b2b Mon Tues fast too. Almost through my monday now, will have a very light meal soon. Good luck.

    Day 14 – Switzerland – FD
Good luck and strength to everyone affected by the NZ quakes and tsunamis, and what I guess will be an almighty clear-up once the land has settled. This week has been a weird one for concentrating on the tiny matter of what we put in our mouths, but still we plod on.
Kept to my TDEE but ate badly yesterday so not surprised that today’s loss is less than I hoped – down to 89.5kg (14st 1.5 / 197.3lbs) from 92.4 so 2.9kgs /6.3lbs down so far in Nov. Had hoped to make it under 89 but will buckle down this week with that aim in mind.

    Day 14 | Derbyshire UK | NFD

    FD North Yorkshire day 14
Had a weekend away was very good no alcohol whilst away and planned well and had my FD on Friday before we went, however didn’t do my normal Saturday weigh in an with a busy sociable weekend have stayed the same, think I need to kick butt this week an on my nfd be healthier.

    Day 14 Uk FD (LF)

Well done@happy margo & And exhale and anyone else who has ‘burned up and thrown out those pounds, never to be seen again’ amd everyone else trying.

Day 14, NFD, New Zealand. Thanks for all you kind words on this forum. Have had a very stressful 20 hours or so. Was just about to write this update when I had to dive under the table as a 5.8 magnitude aftershock hit. Nerves are rattled, to say the least. I had been planning b2b FDs for Mon and Tues, which I find easiest to do while at work. With the central city building I work in closed for today and tomorrow as they check for quake damage, I got an unexpected day off, so switched to a NFD. Trying very hard to stick to TDEE and am definitely more conscious of how much food I put on my plate. A glass of wine as the ground rolls and rumbles is my treat! the good thing is that my aim was to lose 1kg a week during this challenge, and I got off to such a great start with 1.5kg, but I’m still on track to keep to that reduction rate.
Hoping for a quieter night tonight, and particularly don’t want to have to evacuate our home again at 2am!

LEW, and anyone else being affected by earthquake and aftermath, sending good thoughts and hoping it all settles down quickly. X

    Day 14 – UK- NFD

Weighed this morning and stayed the same. That is not surprising as I only managed to do one FD. The next two days I am away from home and at a seminar then I have business meetings that need a lot of entertainment. Oh dear it sounds as though I am not taking responsibility. I will try and get a couple of days in by the end of the week. At least I didn’t put on πŸ™

    Day 14 Sussex U.K.
FD. Yaay. Really need this today. 13.2 after two weeks away. Up four pounds.
It will be water all day and a count on us curry tonight. Have come home with a
cold, caught from granddaughter, so will take it easy after travelling all day yesterday.
Catching up with all the posts.
Lots of people doing really well.

    Day 14 – Staffordshire UK – FD

Weight the same as before weekend, always a good sign. Today’s a fast day so fingers crossed it down a bit more for tomorrows weigh in.

Love to all in NZ, must be so frightening.

    Day 14 UK NFD
Been ill this weekend & missed checking in yesterday.
Back in my routine today – breakfast porridge then leftover chicken & mushrooms for lunch. The sauce involved a chicken stock cube & half fat crΓ©me fraiche but it had an offputting green tinge so I had to chuck some soy sauce in to make it more respectable. 😹😹

    Day 14, NZ, NFD
Thanks for thoughts sent to “Kiwis” in this group – live high up north island so not near earthquake but still had tsunami sirens throughout the night.

Today has ended up being NFD – really don’t know what’s going on with me this month! Much needed FD booked in for tomorrow.

Wishing a quiet night ahead to all those in NZ.

    Take care all. Xxx

Day 14, London, should be a FD after the weekend.

Extra post – trying to do a liquid 36-hour fast and my OH has just sat down beside me to eat his dinner of pie, peas and gravy! It smells FANTASTIC but I will stay strong. πŸ™‚

    Day 14 Dublin FD
Hello all. Prayers to our New Zealand friends friends- how terrifying. I’m from an earthquake zone myself and I well understand the terror that strikes with such tremors but can only imagine how you must be feeling with this magnitude.

Posted two days in a row over the weekend but for some reason they disappeared off the site. FD today which we need! Had two fast days last week but since I’m doing every other day fasting I didn’t keep to plan! Anyway, a new week so think I’ll be on target this week – think 4:3 is more realistic as fasting on weekends is is too difficult it seems. My OH is a brilliant cook from Portugal – too difficult to resist! Plus all the food we cook together is healthy with no desserts as we don’t like sweets! Wine on the other hand…;))….

    Day 14 Melbourne Australia NFD.

London | Day 14 | unsure – so far, FD!

Got a stinking cold and a cough!
I’m really tempted to ditch the FD, but I’ll see how I feel towards lunch time.

Thinking of you Kiwis. Sounds like it’s been a scary night!

Day 14 Surrey UK FD B2tF and all, sorry I couldn’t post yesterday. Had a nice weekend away but glad to be back home. I have not yet read all the posts, and have just heard about New Zealand…do hope everyone is okay!
@Action hero, very interesting post which caught my eye, thank you for the very useful description!
Just to say Friday’s fast went well and I am happy about that. The food at the weekend was all vegetarian with loads of carbohydrates which I have been avoiding, but I was so hungry by Sunday morning that I had some on Sunday. Anyway, for the rest it wasn’t too bad. Halfway through, and still feeling good about things. Once again good luck to all!

Day 14, USA, Missouri Ozarks, Fasting

Back to my first of three fasting days in a row…

Ate more than I was really hungry for yesterday but I am aware that I don’t really want to lose any more weight as I don’t want the weight loss to show up on my face and age me beyond my already 67 years. haha…..

Just have to figure out how much to eat to maintain. Will do the three day fast this week sticking to 500 calories in my evening meal. Will adjust next week if my weight goes beyond 143 which is definitely my lower limit.

This way of eating dropped the final ten pounds that I have been lugging around with such ease. I am very pleased with how energized I have felt on my fasting days.

Wishing all a great day, and a great week !

    Day 14 Italy – NFD
So glad to hear from our New Zealanders, must have been scary.
Mflood023 – if I were you I would really enjoy a burger and milkshake. You can with 5:2… coda had a brilliant post about the rhythm of life with times for fasting and times for feasting. Our modern lifestyles have put us on to a constant feast which is damaging for us. Go with the flow, you never know you might not be able to finish it all!!
Went for breakfast with a girlfriend this morning and didn’t fancy a buttery yummy croissant. I just had orange juice. I’m finding that when I treat treats as such they are wonderful, when I have them too often they are ordinary and lose some of their magic!
Now pie, gravy and peas I doubt will ever lose their magic to me. How did you resist HannahWatto?? Amazing!

    Day 14…. Florida….FD

    Prayers to everyone in NZ.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Today, is another FD for me, I’m trying to get back to basics, find a renew self in the process. I told myself, I was not going to step on the scale this morning but I did it anyways. The funny thing is, the scales been showing a 1lb loss all week, hasn’t moved a fraction….
I tried to realign myself yesterday, so, I looked back, pondered and soul searching. I did find a few things that are helping push through.
In 2003, I did WW and lost a good amount of weight, kept it off until 2007. For nearly 10 years, I have been able to stick to anyone particularly diet after a week, I voluntarily jump off the wagon. I’m three weeks in and subconsciously, I think I’m standing on the edge of the wagon.
I’m still planning food wise, I enjoy FD, absolutely hate NFD and getting enough water. So, as I stand at the edge of the wagon, I’m still doing this! I’ve never been on the edge type of girl, I’m always all the way in or out. I don’t teeter!
Such an odd feeling, just dangling on the edge…..
So, I guess I’m just gonna have to dangle on the edge until, I can find away to move away from it. I know that I’m never put in a position, that I can’t learn something from it. I’m here for a reason, that reason just hasn’t presented it self yet. Today maybe even tommow, heck the whole week, I’m sure. I must find my strength to move from the edge or jump from the edge. Two choices… one moves me forward, the other leads me right back to where I started. One chose is always better than another and I know which one I want. I just need to use my strength to get me there.

    Day 14 – London,UK – NFD

Sorry didn’t manage to get near my computer yesterday so no posting.

Challenging weekend but not too naughty, however, challenging couple of days with a friend coming to stay. Will have to try and be as good as being hospitable allows until Wednesday then will endeavour to do b2b FDs Thursday and Friday to get back on track.

Next week will be a huge challenge too as visiting family in Scotland Mon-Fri. Will have to stay strong to come out of that trip unscathed!!

Thoughts going out to New Zealand.

    Have a great day everyone!!

    Day 14 – Cumbria UK – NFD

Good to hear that our NZ friends are all OK

Love reading all the posts on this site – full of encouragement and so positive.

Today was meant to be a FD but the OH suggested brunch at my fav cafe before doing a food shop – so change of plans as I love the Eggs Benedict there – really enjoyed with some wonderfully aromatic Earl Grey tea! (No breakfast or lunch today) – As a result a light supper now planned for tonight and aiming not to snack until then…..

Have looked at my diary and due to various outings at the end of the week will now aim at doing a back to back FD (500cal) starting tonight after supper – aiming to break my fast on Thursday at lunchtime as have a lunch date planned with my daughter then.
I did one last week for the first time and did not find it too hard – it will be interesting to see how I cope this week…..

That’s the brilliant thing with this 5:2 lifestyle – it can be adapted and changed as required to fit in with your life!

To those who are struggling a bit – PLEASE KEEP GOING – IT DOES WORK!
This from someone who has lost over 2.5stones this year and maintained the loss – started on this lifestyle in Mid January.
The health benefits as outlined by @happymargo on Day 12 is a key reason to see this as a lifestyle and not a diet – weight loss is just a happy by product.
I’m an Asthamatic and have not used my Ventolin (Bronchodilator) for the past 6 months and have reduced my Becotide dosage (preventative) by half – I no longer get wheezy when I exercise or are out on Fells enjoying the Cumbrian landscape

My encouragement and positive thoughts to all
