  • Day 13, NFD, New Zealand. Probably a bit over my TDEE as I’ll be having a big family potluck dinner at my house so no control over what’s on the menu. But I will have control over how much of it is on my plate. Looking forward to mon & tues FDs.

    bigbooty,

Hi, and you are so right about the healthy protein/breakfast/snack bars – most are really just candy bars.

Which is fine if that is what one is looking to eat. I am actually using up some bars out of the pantry – not sure the nutritional content of that one as I have already thrown the box away. We usually buy the Premier Protein 30g bars, they are pretty good although some of the flavors are a bit “chewy”..

Just finished my after church dinner, had a little bit of chicken w rice soup (about half a cup) and a few saltines with sharp cheddar slices. Wasn’t really hungry but knew I needed to eat something.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

    Linda

    Day 13 NZ NFD
Quiet day. Too many cookies…no will
Power for homebaking. Must stop baking as I can resist bought treats easily just baking that I can’t leave alone

    Hi LindaSue,

You have to be careful about advertising. The worst example I came across was a “health” bar advertised as a high protein Paleo bar. It was 55% sugar!!

    Day 13 UK NFD

Thanks to my fellow Friday fasters who defintely made it easier this week. I din’t struggle with it this time. A special well done to anyone who did stuggle.

Norrie, I thought of you in lovely Oxford (I was born there) it can be tough when away.

Miesque, I smiled at cheese day. Cheese is good I think especially if you can do it without the bread/biscuits. Hope it was good.

Very well under TDEE yesterday. I just wasn’t very hungry. I can’t tell you how unlikely a phrase that is for me. I have never been one of those people who isn’t hungry or forgets to eat. Alien territory for me. It has even crossed my mind I am getting ill!

Backtothefuture, thank you for your wonderfully encouraging posts. I agree ‘lose’ doesn’t begin to cover it.

Stay strong and happy Sunday everyone.

    Day 13 Italy – NFD
Managed a healthy day, had a salad for lunch and a chicken breast wrapped in Parma ham and some cabbage for dinner. Snacked on almonds and rice cakes and felt ok. Before finding 5:2 my BIG breakfast would have dictated the whole day, now I have control to have a treat and then get right back on track without feeling guilty.
Today is my partner’s day off, so I’m taking the day off too. I feel if I can keep the atmosphere light then we will clear the air quicker. This entails eating together and probably a glass of wine…or three!

    Day 13 New Zealand NFD

Day 13 Country West Australia FD morphed into a NFD
Yesterday FD went OK until unexpected lunch guests. Made lowest calorie salads and all OK until guests served apple pie and ice-cream for dessert. Even the sliver I had would have put me over 500 calories. Honestly 500 calories is really not much at all. So in effect a 16:8 was achieved.
Small dinner last night but pasta and chicken, even a small serve = lots more calories than I had hoped for.
16:8 again today. Was hoping to get through to tomorrow morning ( Monday Aust. time) but went to a meeting after church with bring and share lunch – sandwiches, potato wedges, sausage rolls, crisps, quiche, scones jam and cream, cake. I didn’t indulge as much as usual but enough to again be over 500 calories so plan to go from now – 3pm WST til dinner 6pm Monday 14th.
Willpower muscle needs a lot more working. The good thing is that I am still consuming a lot less than I would have previously done so. The not-so-good thing is that the next 6 weeks is leading up to Christmas with parties, dinners, lunches, end of year functions aplenty. If I have difficulty achieving a sensible 5:2 now, what will these next 6 weeks be like??
As mentioned in a prior post, until I started being accurate with calorie counting I was under guesstimating intake by quite a way and I think I am not alone.
Am trying to practise mindful eating around food as there is going to plenty of it over the next 6 weeks – I have 2 lunches and wind-ups this week!
Congratulations to all the 36ers. Great job! And thanks to Happy Margo for the reminders of the benefits of 5:2.

    Day 13, NZ, NFD
Busy weekend – good, but no exercise (& low water intake today).
Looking forward to FDs Mon & hopefully Tues. Have a family gathering on Thursday which I’d like to enjoy (food included) so need to make plan for end of week for staying on track.

Focusing on exercise & water this week.

    Take care all. Xxx

    Day 13 – Staffordshire UK – NFD

    Day 13 – Melbourne – NFD
Congrats to the Friday Fasters! I’m in awe – good on you all for hanging in there.
@itsmyturn so sorry to hear about your very tough patch.

Haven’t done too badly with 2 parties in 2 days – indulged a little more than I wanted to yesterday, but not a blow out and I skipped breakfast today so that I could eat a restaurant lunch today and didn’t go overboard. Not as good as I had hoped, either day, but not too bad. I was famished and bad tempered on Saturday afternoon, and a salad and 2 cheese slices at least improved my temper!

One thing I am finding out is that I need to wait at least 30 minutes after I finish a meal to feel really satisfied, which is a surprise. I still feel like eating a bit more up to about 30 mins, then I just get ‘full’ and satisfied quite suddenly. Not sure if it’s been like that before or not.

Happy new week All – onward and downward!

    Day 13 | Derbyshire UK | NFD

    Day 13 – Switzerland – NFD
Well, staying accountable has certainly improved my NFD results – although I’ve gone over my target TDEE a couple of times, I have kept within my current TDEE, which means I shouldn’t be undoing any of the calorie deficit achieved on FDs. It’s a pain having to keep note of everything, but at least I find it sufficiently annoying to put me off snacking almost entirely (too much hassle to work out all the cals on MFP). Still hoping for a loss tomorrow.
I know it’s a bit early, but I’m planning to bake our Christmas cake today – then I can feed it with all the alcohol I’m not drinking in the run-up to the New Year!
    Happy Sunday everyone!

    Day 13 Cornwall UK NFD

Well done to all the Friday fasters – great job!

    Coda and b2tf thankyou xx

I’m up for next Friday 18th Fast.

I love the thought of taking you all in my pocket and being motivated by posts to keep me on track!

This morning I’ve got MFP back into use!
I know that going back to counting calories and logging them really keeps me honest to myself! Nfd’s are what knocks me off that b… horse, when I started 5.2 I was so focused and MFP kept my nfd days well within my tdee, thats my challenge today! one day at a time!

Also re-reading Dr M and Dr Fungs books.

Re arthritis, still causing me problems, mornings are horrid till I get moving, must be the damp weather – but could it be that I’ve eaten more processed foods this month? An experiment, no processed foods this week.

Looking back at the last few months, though I’ve not lost weight I have maintained. But it all goes back to the total breakdown of relationship with my sister and I feel heart broken. I have to try and move on but it’s very hard!!

Yesterday was our grandaughters 3rd birthday so cake involved, yes I indulged in a slice! A very long day 300 mile round trip but so worth it!!

    Happy Sunday xxx

Day 13 (only just half an hour left) Wellington NZ NFD

A very social weekend with dinner Saturday night then lunch out today at local pub with friends.

At least the AB’s have found their Mojo again so watch out Ireland next week, we are out to getch ya and restore the rugby world to its rightful position 🙂

    Day13/NFD/Georgia,USA
Thank you all for all for the well wishes for my husband surgery, since the tumor was 5cm they performed a gastrectomy, I am in the process of finding a good protein powered to add to smoothies for him and myself, I don’t write a lot due to my carpal tunnel in both wrists but I’m grateful to have all of you, I’m with wonderful motivators here, Thank you and Hsppy Sunday

    Day 13 Brisbane, Australia NFD

UK day 13 NFD Caught up on the last few days posts, wow there are some determined fasters out there -well done ! Have had some indulgences over the last few days but all in all think I’ve kept on an even keel, may need to modify next weeks fasts as OH has a few days off ,so weather permitting we may go out for a day or so, so I’ll just need to be a bit inventive as long as I can stay steady I think I can still post a loss at the end of the month

    Day 13, London, NFD

Well done to the Friday fasters.

Me- I have to figure a strategy to stay on track over the weekend, as all goes to pot then (for me).

    Day 13, Gozo, Malta, NFD

Today is a nfd for me as well. I baked a gingerbread with ice topping. I already had a small piece plus Chinese food for lunch. Last Friday I did double chocolate slices and I had a slice on Friday but no weight gain. My husband NFD son didn’t like the chocolate slices so. I’ll either give them away or throw them in the dustbin. I’ll treat myself to a small slice of gingerbread and a yogurt with honey plus a fruit this evening. I hope to stay within my TDEE or not much above that way.

Tomorrow is a fast day for me.

Happy Sunday everyone. Enjoy yourselves and stay strong.

    London | Day 13 | NFD

    Relaxing Sunday.
Just had a breakfast of giant rolled-oat porridge with grated apple.
I think I’m coming down with a cold/cough – woke up with a sore throat and mild headache 🙁

I’m going to start my 30-day hot-yoga/spin/TRX challenge next week – day 1 being Tue 15th Nov . Looking forward to it.
I’m going to play safe with 36h fasts in the first week of the workout challenge – don’t want to push it too much and f*** on both fronts :-p
I’ll do 5:2 with 500 cals until I settle into the routine.
Coda and Ciren – I’ll join you for another 36h fast may be in a couple weeks. I’m also booked to donate blood next Friday, so not planning to fast then.

Visited some friends last night for dinner. One of them, a guy in his late 40’s/early 50’s, was talking about how he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 3 months ago. He was saying (pretty much boasting actually) how his GP put him on insulin straight away. He said ‘I don’t take any medication, only insulin’.
The thing that horrified me most was he had mentioned 5:2 diet (I think NHS info given to newly diagnosed diabetics, mention 5:2) to the GP and the GP has said it not for him – ‘its too dangerous because of the risk of hypo’s’!!! – though I’m not sure if this what the GP actually said, it sounded to me more like an excuse.
I was so tempted to tell him about Dr Fung’s work but knowing this guy – a bit of a know-it-all to put it mildly – he would dismiss it straight off. Maybe in time…
Sadly, he has no idea how much damage insulin will do to his body 🙁

itsmyturn – my thoughts are with you. Glad you’re still managing to do positive things to keep your self centred. Keep strong.

Cathyh46 – hope your husband’s surgery went ok. Do you have thyroid problems? – carpel tunnel is a classic symptom of under-active thyroid. Sorry – didn’t mean to pry.

Mumsy63 and all the 36ers – well done all! A great acheivement.

Bigbooty – agree with you on the ‘health’ bar advertising. I used be ‘addicted’ to Nakd bars/snacks – comes in all sorts of flavours, quite moreish. They were in fact recommended to me by a personal trainer! I don’t go anywhere near those any more!

    Happy (rest of) Sunday everyone.

Day 13 / Tweed Coast Australia / NFD

DAFD and feeling great! Would love to leave a second day between FDs, though schedule does not permit this week, so am fasting again tomorrow. By the way, black sapotes are in season here where I live and I’ve been so enjoying them! I know it is a bit indulgent, but I ate one for my dinner!

    Day 13 – Georgia, US – FD

Day 13: Gloucestershire, UK: Non-fast day.
A bit peeved to find myself two pounds UP after having two good 36-hour liquid fasts last week! TUT!
Must try harder next week then.

    Day 13 : Cheshire, UK : NFD

Not at work this week so I’m hoping that I can get back on track and in some kind of rhythm again.

    Happy Sunday everyone!

Day 13 USA (Illinois) FD today

Pretty crazy eating day yesterday. Managed just liquid breakfast and salad lunch, but then went pizza and wine crazy for supper. I had worked outside in sunny cool weather raking leaves for a couple hours and was famished. Oh well. That happened. I don’t think it really hurt me too much. Scale is maintaining still.

Will do 500 calorie fast today. Onward and downward!

    Day 13 – Canada – NFD

Just waking up and hearing news of the earthquake in New Zealand. My thoughts and prayers are with you. A terrifying time, I’m sure.

    US SC Day 13 NFD

Have to admit I did indulge a bit last night. My daughter had a friend staying the night and we watched the newer Star Trek movie. The girls are such fun… oh to be 20 again 😊 Today we will go to the mall and walk for hours I’m sure. So nice that that actually want me to go with them! My daughter is still doing 5:2 although not on any of the challenges. She tries to fast twice a day but with exams coming up it’s a stressful time and sometimes she only manages one.. but she is maintaining and that’s good.

It is actually raining here today! We have had no rain since August and the smoke from the fires in the mountains of NC has been drifting our way making for hazy days and a smoky smell. I’m sure the grass and shrubs are enjoying it as much as I am 😊

    Day 13 | NFD | Bucks UK

Day 13, USA, Missouri Ozarks – Non Fasting

Perfectly beautiful November day, cool – crisp – sunny – bight blue skies.

Feeling grand, figured my ten day average weight (I weigh and record every day on a different site – have for ten years – started doing a ten day average since I joined here so see the downward trend.

This ten day average was 145.00
    previous was 146.7
    previous to that was 148.7

Exactly what I want to see – my goal was to be weighing 140 something – everyday – not veering back into the 150 realm. I know weight fluctuates several pounds a day so by keeping the average (maybe it is 144 one day, 148 one day, 145 one day, etc., ) I get a truer picture.

Wishing you all a beautiful day.

    Hi uk day 13 nfd
    Remembrance Sunday feeling emotional

B2tf ‘ thank you such a thoughtful post

Happymargo – good response to Swizzle

Swizzle – lots of reasons just to keep on the plan

    Moth54 – read happymargo’s post

Holly – hope you resolve your differences soon

LilyMartin – I think as we know now all the previous diet advice given was all wrong. Now with 5:2 even with all the parties ahead – we can still make it work for us. Remember famine/feast/famine.

And….exhale I plan to make my Christmas cake next weekend

Rocy65 – breakdown of any relationship is hard. Sometimes being strong and moving on is the only choice you have. While she will stay in your heart just not in your life – but maybe someday?

Wishing your husband well, Cathy. (and you)

    Day 13 / FD / NC, USA

    I think yesterday went well.
Breakfast – Kashi cereal with a banana and almond milk ~320 plus coffee with hazelnut creamer (my fav) ~100
Lunch – hummus, spinach, cucumber sandwich with some olives and pepper jack cheese ~ 350
Dinner – vegetable turkey soup and a jalapeño cheddar bagel ~ 520 (at most)
I also had 2 glasses of wine with some mixed in peaches! We will be safe and say ~360… so around 1700 maybe? My TDEE is 1850. It was a higher end NFD for sure, but I also went to the gym and did legs workouts (which I love) and stair climber. So I’m sure that torched something.

Today is a fast day and I’m at home. I’m a little scared because this is my first lazy fast day. I’m hoping I don’t get too food crazy.

Question-is it considered fasting still if I eat celery when I get hungry? I have loads of it, and it wouldn’t really be adding to my cal intake for the day. Or should I not because part of the benefits has to do with your body using the energy required for digestion elsewhere? Thanks!

I’ll post tonight about my day, just wanted to check in!

    Day 13…… Florida…..NFD

This morning, I realized, I have a really bad habit and it’s put me into a funky mood, has been for a couple days now…. I’m weighing myself daily! I couldn’t figure out why I was in such a funk, then as I stepped on the scale I felt it. It hit me like a ton of bricks….
My eating has been erratic the last couple days. I’m not hungry but I still eat. I’m not adhering to my fasting times either, I still eating. I haven’t tracked my calories, I’m still eating….
The question now…. is what I’m going to do!?!

    Day 13– Colorado, USA– NFD

Should’ve waited till tomorrow, the 14th day of Challenge, to weigh in at 2 week mark.
But was TOO EXCITED to wait, since I did my first 4:3 this week… Thanks to our additional 36 hour Friday Fast Challenge Group this week.

    Success!!

    156 lbs. = Original start of 5:2
147.5 = start weight for November Challenge
    146.0 = after 1st week of November
    144.1 = at end of 2nd week …. YAY!!!

11.9 = total pounds lost on 5:2 so far. = 5.4 kgs removed from me!

Hope everyone has a terrific day 🙂

Prayers for New Zealand at this difficult time.

    Hi Coda
thank you for your reply. I agree that feast/fast/feast is the WOL to embrace hence my doing the 5:2. My concern for myself and others is that we may be over-indulging on our FDs and eating over 500 – 600 calories as this is very easy to do and also not being so careful with our NFDs . We want to enjoy our food and not be so strict that it becomes burdensome and so we give up.
Several of the posts here suggest that we do struggle to keep around our TDEEs and under/at 500 calories on FDs. It is really only since I started actually counting calories and not guessing that I realised my mistake – and I’m only going to do it for a week or so to get me on track so I really am aware of portions and what 500 calories looks like for me and also my TDEE of 1500 – 1600 calories.
e.g. : Over the Christmas period 60 g fruitcake ( Christmas cake) 220calories; 156 calories in 1 oz( 18 kernels) cashew nuts; 155 calories in 1 oz potato crisps; 70 calories in 100 mls white wine ( most glasses I have/ see are well over that amount, about 200 mls = 140 calories). So at one party I could easily eat the above which is nudging up to 700 calories without considering any other food for that day. And I certainly couldn’t count it as a FD !! Multiply this a few days a week and I will be in trouble… not to mention the fruit mince pies, marzipan, sweets, cheesecakes, pavlovas, and Christmas dinner…

    Day 13 London UK NFD

I love a ham sandwich….brilliant name but it does make me salivate every time I see it!

    2nd post nfd

yes coda she’ll always be in my heart and hopefully one day we will be able talk.

all good today but logging everything on MFP makes you realise how the calories mount up!!

cathy wishing you and your husband well.

thinking about the New Zealand quake and all those affected. My family in Christchurch are ok, thank God.

onwards and down! good luck everyone!

    Day 13 – Cumbria UK – NFD

Thinking about all our NZ 5:2 group – hope you and yours are all safe xx

Good weekend of NFDs – I have kept below my TDEE on both days – unheard of! I do wonder if the reason that I was not so hungry this weekend was linked with the 60+hrs (500cal) back to back FDs I completed on Sat morning? It was my first attempt at doing this. Or is being part of this group keeping me accountable?

Reading a lot of the comments above I thought that I would share what I have found to work for me:-
    * I keep most of my 500cals on my FDs for my evening meal – sometime I have a semi skimmed Flat White around lunchtime but normally use only a small amount of skimmed milk in my tea/coffee during the day. I find I need to feel full at night otherwise I don’t sleep well – does anyone else feel like that?

    * On my NFDs I don’t usually have breakfast but exercise on an empty stomach (Yoga/ Aerobics or walking in the fells) and have a light lunch (which I admit is often a slice of cake and a flat white…..) and have my main meal in the evening. I also enjoy a 1/2 bottle of wine with my meal 2/3 times a week on my NFD. If I’m out for lunch then I only have a light supper – low calorie salad in summer or soup in winter

*I try very hard not to snack as once I start I find it very, very hard to stop and I know that I would rather use my calories on enjoying a glass or two of wine!

Hope no further Tsunami damage in NZ – keep well

FD tomorrow for me with a Pilates session(1hr) in the afternoon followed by Yoga (1.5hr) in the evening to keep me centred

Hope the group has had a good weekend and are ready to start the challenge all over next week
    Namaste

    NFD, DAY 23, Canada

Way to go Happymargo, great results!

I have a party to go to today so tho I can’t control the food served I can control the amount of food I take in. . .thanks so much for giving me that new mantra.

Hope all is well for our New Zealand challengers

    NFD, DAY 13, Canada

Way to go Happymargo, great results!

I have a party to go to today so tho I can’t control the food served I can control the amount of food I take in. . .thanks so much for giving me that new mantra.

    Day 13 | Ohio, USA | NFD

Back on track for two FDs this week. Been good exercise though. Friday went to trainer. This morning did a half hour of yoga and then old-school 8-minute abs video.

    Take care all.

    Day 13; Toronto; NFD

Another beautiful day here, looking forward to my walk. I got on the scale yesterday, and I had GAINED weight, but I am not surprised. We went out for dinner Friday night and well, I indulged. I am still moving forward, and I hope I will see losses in the coming weeks.

Just hearing about New Zealand – sending out prayers and positive thoughts, hope everyone makes it through okay.

Day #13 – SW WA USA NFD
Doing well. It’s exciting to have clothes get loose & people start to notice the change.

Question – how many calories do you count for a cup of bone broth?

    Day 12 – London, UK – NFD
    (for yesterday)

    Day 13 – London, UK – NFD

    Day 14 NZ FD
    Watching the quake aftermath unfold.
My region wasn’t affected but we do have a tsunami warning in place.
Thanks to all who are sending positive thoughts toward our country.

Day 13: Pacific NW USA, NFD, enjoying a Bullet Proof Coffee and half papaya with yogurt.

Our November daily challenge group has condensed to a very consistent, supportive, fun group! We may only read the last few posts before our own or only the most recent page but still find something new to think about and use in our own journey. I feel lucky that I need to pour over every entry in my volunteer role so I get to benefit from all of your insights, wisdom and humor!

!! OH just got a call from cousins in NZ informing us of quake and that they are OK. Hope our NZ November challengers and their friends and families are safe !!

HappyMargo – that’s a list you compiled to make us happy! And hooray for there being so much less of you this month!

bigbooty – thanks for reminding us that “easy” foods aren’t always a good alternative as our schedules speed up during the holidays

Moth54 – I know you can resume your weight loss because you have already been able to do what works for you. Maybe take a re-look at your food intake, find somewhere to make an adjustment (exchange vegetables for some of the bread?), go back to your former fasting schedule and you will be where you want to be. Also, and… exhale (our friend’s pen-name always reminds me to do this), here’s a gif to help: https://beamindful.com/2014/12/01/visual-breathing-exercise/

Lany36 – so-o-o glad to have heard from you post earthquake! I hope your region remains safe and other areas heed the call to higher ground. In your previous post you reminded me how much I like to bake. In my family it was the way my kids and I bonded, how we comforted, how we played. I just need to use my healthy, skinny kids as role models. They don’t necessarily eat the plate clean. My daughter will have one cookie or one small piece of pecan pie (her specialty) instead of the mindless continual nibbles that seem to be my pattern, especially during the holidays. I have been known to go back to the chocolate chip cookie jar and be surprised by the fact they are all gone and realize I was the only one at home (usually very busy doing the Mom things) so it must have been me who finished them!

Biddy – I do think it takes awhile for your brain to figure out that you ate. One of my healthy sons (the tallest one) always was a slow eater. I think he’s still a good role model for leaving food on your plate when you’re full because his brain has time to register the food he’s eaten. I on the other hand am a Mom who learned to wolf down my food in order to tend to everyone else!

CathyH – I am sending healing thoughts to your husband and how especially amazed I am that you have continued your daily posting – I hope it’s been a support for you to know we are here and want to know how you are doing.

LindaSue – my ultimate goal is to be where you are and your 10 day averaging is a great plan when I get to maintenance!

Mflood – I’m going to step out on a limb and act like an expert and say chew on all the celery you want on a FD if it helps you keep from eating other things. Anyone else want to chime in?

Bert – you may have temporarily fallen into my own personal “magic thinking” hole. “I know what I want so why isn’t it happening?” The honest-to-yourself, back to basics, follow the “newbie” advise is what it takes, right??

Rocy – I also know you will see past the present emotional pressures and with your resolve get back to your basic FD/NFD balance! You’ve figured out maintenance very well and that’s something we all have ahead of us! Maybe adjusting some food choices (veggies instead of bread?) watching the calorie count and getting back to basics.

Grammaspice – I’m glad you’re back on track after feeling down on Day 10. Sorry I didn’t comment then but sounds like you made it through and have a good plan for FD’s this week – which days?

AnneMarie – one recipe I have says 1 cup beef bone broth = 70 calories
