  • Day 6, Oceanside CA, CD
    Hi Okeydokey,

I live in NEPA, Mountain Top to be exact. It is in Luzerne County at the intersection of Routes 80 and 81, between Hazleton and Wilkes Barre. Total population 18,000 over 100 square miles. I have lots of mountain trails to explore, but my favorite is the State Gamelands 207. It is a great workout–2 miles up and then 2 miles back, and I walk out my front door to enjoy it. Have been counting steps and miles with Fitbit for nearly 3 years. For the winter we come to Oceanside, CA where the surf rolls in 24/7 and walks along the beach are daily treats.

My husband has been retired for 14 years and I own the weekly community newspaper. Small town living. I have been to Lancaster numerous times. The rolling farmland inside the busy highways is tranquil and beautiful. Pennsylvania is a great place to live from May to November. The winter not so much. Mountain Top had 28″ of snow in the Blizzard of 2017 March 21 and 22. Warmer days are coming soon and we will be there to watch spring emerge.

@annemarilyn great way to talk with your Dad and work your new WOE into your new WOL✨Blessings to you on your travels.
@steffieagle Mountain Top a couple hours north of us. Ivan see why it would get snow and ice in the winter! CA is a great retirement retreat!

    😊✨Still Day 6 – US – FD
@cboz I hope things get better, hugs 🤗 if it will make it better.
@taraga ✨Welcome to the April Challenge, sounds like you have this fasting down. Please post your April information and I will add it to our April Challenge worksheet.✨
Today would be Day 6 (because it is April 6) then post your area that you live in. Then post whether Day 6 is a FD fast day or a NFD non fast day.
My example if Day 6 – US – FD
Please also put your April starting weight and your Goal weight for the end of April. If you’d like to post the Day 1 – Day 5 FD’s or NFD’s I will place the information on our group worksheet.✨

    Second Post

Ooo just over 800 on a FD 🤦🏻‍♀️ Will work to a lower cal day tomorrow to make up for it 🙈

    Day 7 – NZ – FD

    @coda 4 FD’s in a row!✨✨
✨✨🤜🏻✨🤛🏻✨✨🌈✨🎉You Have completed every challenge since you started the challenges last year! You deserve a medal 🥇✨🥇I had a faux pas today. I hadn’t eaten anything yet today, but I was tempted by a small square piece of sugar free, gluten free cake my children offered me. I’m still at 200 cals so I hope I can still make my FD. It’s funny how that action of eating that square snuck up on me. Earlier this week I had only NFD’s. Because of Birthdays. ✨I seriously want to get back on track. This group is the place to do it. ✨🥇Thank- you for starting the Challenge groups. They are a real support for a lot of people, looking to get and stay healthy.
@lynzm I like that idea about the willpower drawer and Congratulations✨🎉 Without any of the chocolates missing! 👏👏

    U.K. Day 5 & 6 Evesham NFD’s

Day 5 was finishing B2B had an apple at lunchtime then broke fast at 7pm,too late really,I should have broken about five in hindsight, but hey hindsight 20:20, it’s all a learning curve here. By the time I was home from work had the munchies as supper haddnt really hit the spot….saving grace was lots of rice cakes in house so rattled through a hoard of them, probably more than a packet and a large kitkat…a bit of fruit too, can’t say I was impressed with myself but not the end of the world, prior to 5:2 I’d deffo be munching biscuits not rice cakes….poo happens 😉

Day 6 decent day, broke fast at 11.30am with Apple then bike ride, lunch 13.30 tea 19.30 …..shall I have some dessert, yes I will because I can as not snacked during the day…boom 😁

This is only my second week on 5:2 but learnt One thing that might help….

Planning is king!!!! That’s deffo the most important thing, when your FD NFD will be, how you will approach each one…..keep things simple, don’t try to be too clever or fancy on FD,just get through it…oh and drink lots of fluids….I odds get through 5litres easily,it’s amazing how little ” hunger pangs” I’ve suffered doing that…but each to their own, do as suits folks 😄 X

    Day 6 – Cumbria UK – NFD

Just checking in – very busy – will try to catch up tomorrow………..

Controlled day today – FD tomorrow – add me to the pocketeers list if one is up and running

    Stay strong!

    Day 5 | FD | UK

    Day 6 | NFD | UK

    Day 6- Montreal- FD

I’ve finally got 5 mins to check in, the house guests have gone to see the Niagara Falls and will be back tomorrow night. It hasn’t been as bad as I thought (food wise), we’ve been so busy we have been going to bed pretty early so I haven’t been snacking in the evenings (my Achilles heel). I had a peep on the scales this morning and the damage is minimal. I’m looking forward to getting back to usual next week.

@steve-toon-taxi-driver. Brilliant post. Thanks for some much needed laughs

@fayefaye – burlesque dancing class… that is fantastic! What a wonderful way to learn to not take oneself not too seriously!!

Today is my second fast day of the week (first one was Monday) and all afternoon I kept hoping my husband would email and suggest that we go out to our favorite Mexican restaurant for dinner. It’s been a stressful week and I am feeling the need for a few margaritas. But he hasn’t suggested it, so I’m not going to suggest it. Today my only calories have been from two cups of coffee with cream. Other than that, all I’ve had is seltzer water and still water. It’s 5:30pm, I might as well stay strong and finish out the fast day, right??? We can save margaritas for Friday night.

    Day 7 / UK / FD

The less said about today’s NFD, the better. But I will say this: this is just a delay. The kind of delays that make this WOL sustainable. There will be times when I am in less search distraction from other things going on my life and will find it easier to walk past every single opportunity, even (especially!) on a NFD. Tomorrow’s another day.

@minnygirl, thank you–it felt so good! I am loving browsing for clothes but holding off for now because I know my body’s still changing.

@jojo58, thanks for the tip! Incidentally, my smoothie contains nuts, berries and milk–as if you had guessed it! So maybe that’s actually what I am after. I will look into how to incorporate it.

@strawberriesandcream, thank you for the recipe! I can’t quite get used to the idea of porridge with water yet–but I may just give it a try on the weekend–but I am slowly reducing the portion and let that thought brew that maybe I don’t need it at all. Creature of habit, that’s what I am, for better or for worse!

The support and accountability this forum provides is just so invaluable, good luck, everyone, on 500 or more!

    Day 7 NFD NZ
Not doing too well so far. Ate too much of the wrong foods yesterday and felt sooo sick during the night. Got up and had a cup of herbal tea to settle my digestive system so feeling a little queesy today. When will I ever learn.

    Day 7 -US – FD
It’s still 6:20 PM Thursday evening here, but I wanted to get this weeks group worksheet out for the week.

The worksheet will be updated and posted every Thursday night Eastern Standard Time. Which is 5 hours earlier than GMT Greenwich Mean Time that is the time stamped on our posts. Which means many of our group members will be asleep or just getting up for Friday. So I will post it as (in this case Day 7) Friday so everybody will see it as 1 of the first Friday posts. I will continue to update through the next week and will then again post the link Thurs night/Friday morning for members to view.✨

    Day7/FD/Melbourne Australia

@fatrabbit brilliant summary. Hope you don’t mind I’ve copied it to show friends and my DH. It sums this WOE up beautifully. It really is about good nutrition. The absolute key to making this a sustainable way of life is embracing a version of Dr M’s M- Plan on NFDs to suit and gradually cutting down on refined carbs. Dr M doesn’t advocate eliminating them completely if it makes this WOE less sustainable. Rather he advocates making it harder to reach for them by not keeping them in the home. Willpower, he says is greatly over-rated, if he feels like the occasional dark chocolate he walks to purchase it.

Since starting 5:2 in 2014 I’ve been eating a Mediterranean style diet. I haven’t eliminated pasta, white rice (basmati or arborio), oats, potatoes or sourdough bread completely but have reduced their consumption to occasional. I’m a huge fan of eating soluble and resistant starches for gut health. Whilst they can be obtained from fresh foods and complex carbs, if I’m feeling sluggish my go to foods are reheated pasta and oats. They work every time. I did eliminate savoury biscuits and chips/crisps completely because I can’t eat just one, I have to eat the whole darn packet. Do I feel deprived? No, I no longer fancy them.

I followed 5:2 to improve my health. Weightloss wasn’t my priority. I lost 42 pounds in 10 months averaging 1 pound per week. Very sustainable. The 5:2 programme according to Dr Moseley, “is designed as a well-signposted path towards a longer, healthier life; weight loss is simply a happy adjunct to all of that.” I was in it for the health benefits. It didn’t occur tome to tweak it although I always saved my calories for an evening meal hence my fast day consisted of 23 hours before eating up to 500 calories followed by another 12 hours before breaking fast with a milky coffee. I watched portions, counting calories doesn’t suit. Importantly I am no longer pre diabetic, my blood pressure has normalised, bad cholesterol is way down, hips and knees no longer ache and, best of all I can keep up with my 5 preschool aged grandchildren! I’m 65 and take no medications and have suffered no muscle wasting and have improved my metabolism. I’m very, very grateful for this WOL and finding an eating plan that suits me. I wish you all success in finding a strategy that works for you.

@onahealthyhigh That is exactly what this WOE and WOL is about. I’m very sure that is what Dr. Mosley had in mind! Praises for your success and Thank-you for sharing! ✨✨😊✨✨

Your welcome @okeydokey. I haven’t thanked you for shepherding us through another month. Very grateful, it’s an enormous commitment. I participated in one of Coda’s early challenges and rejoined in February this year. It’s wonderful reading the many supportive and inspirational posts. As an avid reader of nutrional information and participator in online courses on nutrition I really appreciate the many knowledgeable participants and links to new information. So once again a huge thanks to you and all who have kept these challenges alive.

    Day 7 – Aus – FD

    Day 6 – FD – Canada
Have managed to stay below 500 cals this FD, feeling good. B2b days on Mon/Tues were both 800 cals. Am interested to see the scales tomorrow. Yesterday was a NFD and I had several stressful phone calls to make which drove me to drink red wine, eat too many tortilla chips and generally go to bed feeling lousy. It’s interesting how I feel better on FDs… I think this is partially due to health benefits and clean feeling we all know and partly due to the fact that I am essentially type A. Not something I am proud of.
There was a moment earlier this week in a yoga class when we were sat on our shins, thighs squashed together, leaning back and I looked at all the fat I have there and realized that I really, really want to whittle that lot down. I’ve always been insecure about it, it is my bête noire. I am motivated to do this!

    Day 7 – Tokyo, Japan – FD 81.2kg

Detoxing today, the extra brown sugar yesterday really threw me off. However I’m not blaming that for the higher weight. I’m shifting my workout to more bar work. Pull-ups, dips and those types of things. That really plays havoc with the scale was muscles really retain a lot of water. That being said I did eat way too much yesterday. I’m washing out the sugar waste with hot bitter black coffee!

I thinking about the salt that might be stored subcutaneously now. 40 years ago in high school cross country the coaches had us take salt tablets base on how much weight we lost during a run. A hard 10km run causes one to sweat a bit. Wow I had a really salty high school period! Anyway I’m wondering how much salt I really lose from sweating hard. I know it leaves salt on unwashed workout clothes. More to learn.

Getting back to sugar … It really seemed to impacted my gut yesterday. At first I felt jitters but then I had real gas problems. I even had to take some medicine to help reduce the gas because it was actually becoming painful. I can’t be sure that was a reaction to the sugar but I’m not planning on experimenting. The jitters clearly was and I’ve noticed that too when I have a desert, although not as bad. Three teaspoons doesn’t seem like that much, but it was three teaspoons more than I’m used too. Additionally the impact really seems limited to refined sugar. I’ve tried to with even five servings of bananas, prunes and raisins and haven’t produced the same effects. In fact when I cut out fruit my gut really starts complaining. (Let’s just leave it at that.)

@fatrabbit – Metabolic slowdown is a real thing but generally it takes months. It also seems that fasting is a cure for that. I think you are only eating once a day? Anyway the rate of weight loss can be impacted my many things. By the way the actual term is “Adaptive thermogenesis”. Here is a blog about it that is kind of interesting. https://www.t-nation.com/diet-fat-loss/truth-about-metabolic-damage Dr. Jason Fung’s blogs get into fasting. https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/

Personally I find that fasting has increased my metabolism. However my primary goal is no longer weight loss, it is fat loss. I’m only a few kg away from a BMI of 25, so I’m in a different position. Even at my high weight today, I’m now 25kg from where I started. That is a LOT of fat that is gone. My starting weight was 106kg (232 lbs.) It has taken me over 4 years to loose all that, but if I had been fasting and avoiding refined sugar it would have happened a lot faster.

    Day 7 – South Korea – FD
Yesterday was a, let’s say, medium good day. This morning the scales showed exactly the same weight as yesterday and with a FD today I hope to see my weight drop tomorrow morning.
I hope I have a change later this day to catch up with reading all new posts.

And as @chubbybiker says, you learn from every fast/non fast day. I definitially agree!
Use that new knowledge for the next day!

    Have a good day everyone!

    Total left to go 10lbs

@onahealthyhigh thank you for your great post. Very inspirational to hear from someone who has lost around the same as I need to and is maintaining.

@okeydokey thank you for keeping on top of this. It must be so much work and a huge commitment. Thanks too for your wonderfully encouraging posts.

I read everyone’s posts and they all really help to inspire. Good luck to all especially anyone weighing or fasting today xx

    Day 7 – Staffordshire UK-nfd

Yesterday a successful 800cal FD and went for a run in the evening. Scales today at a new low, they will go back up over the weekend but will try to keep this to a minimum.

    Day 7 UK FD800

@dykask just lost a long reply I typed:( too much to repeat but thanks for the links. It was reading Jason Fung that convinced me fasting was the thing to do. I have also found my metabolic rate has greatly increased since I have been fasting. I was looking for reassurance that the BSD won’t jeopardise that and I found it. It is all about the nutrition, which I interpret as meaning getting a good variety of veg into my diet. It should be safe as long as my body fat remains high enough to provide a ready source of energy and there is enough loose skin to supplement protein intake. I don’t think it would be such a good idea for people with smaller amounts to lose.

@onahealthyhigh I am glad you found it useful, share away:) You have do so well it is inspiring. Success stories let us know this can be done, although I am being rather impatient compared to you. But I am feeling the same high:))

    Day 6 UK FD
    Day 7 UK FD

Good fast day yesterday. Scales not moved that much over the past week though. The official weigh in is this morning, so I’ll post later. Yesterday morning’s preview was only 0.2kg down from last week, which is pathetic give the effort I’m putting in. Muscle up though and fat down, so not too worried.

    Swimmathon later! See me go…! Whoosh… sink… 🙂

    Happy fasting fasters!

Day 6 24 hour fast NZ
    Day 7 FD NZ

    Day 6 UK NFD
    DAy 7 UK FD

    Day7, Newcastle UK, NFD

So sorry @okeydokey – more changes to your spreadsheet!! Day 6 NFD.

Yesterday’s 800 calorie fast went to plan until last night. We went to the theatre and I enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine. This did lead to a sensible amount of nuts and cheese on returning home. So yesterday became an NFD. Interestingly – and happily – I don’t feel bad about that in any way as I mindfully chose to have some wine which added to the enjoyment of our evening. That feels normal to me versus my old habit of downing a bottle a night in the house.

@fatrabbit & @onahealthyhigh – thank you for the very interesting posts yesterday. This losing weight/getting healthy game can indeed feel like a minefield at times and I appreciate you both taking the time to research and share some sound information. Likewise @dykask – our very own real time human guinea pig. I hope your gas problems have subsided 🙂

So I’ve rethought my weekly regime for the rest of April. Probably having started my gardening work again has changed what my body needs. So back to original 5:2 from next week with B2B Monday/Tuesday based on a quarter of my long term TDEE (keeping in mind that I can increase calories up to 800 if absolutely necessary). The remaining five days will be controlled NFDs – anywhere between my long term BMR and TDEE figures. This gives the flexibility to ‘save’ a few more calories for the weekend or nights out such as last night. I’ll continue to use a 16:8 eating window with two meals a day.

@Nabaht – all the best in your new job. @tillergirl – I hope all is well with you and your Hubby. @Stevetoontaxidriver – very funny and too true.

Have a great Friday folks – Together we are Stronger!

    Day 7 – Switzerland – NFD

Yes, another FD postponed. I will get my head straight, put in some honest NFDs and plan my next FD for Monday.

Day 7, London, UK, FD (2nd of b2b)

Busy day today, (so no-brainer to make it a FD) this evening I’ll get through the numerous posts that are sure to be generated throughout today!!!!

Looking forward to planning my weeks menu on MFP, as I’m hearing the bar of Lindt hazelnut calling my name!!! I’m going to log a couple of squares per NFD this week otherwise I’ll scoff the entire thing tomorrow!!!!!!

Keep the faith people, we’ve got this!!!!!!!!!!

Day 7 Newcastle UK NFD 😍
Morning everyone. Woke with a heavy head this morning can’t really call it a headache as its not pounding almost feels like a mild hangover without the pleasure of alcohol 😨
Really felt like I had enough fluids yesterday I’m guessing 4.5 litres on my fasting day. Not the first time with the headache on the fasting days. On course for a weight loss on the scales tomorrow if I stay sensible today.
Keep up the good work everybody.

    Day 7 – Germany – NFD

    Day 7 London, UK, NFD
    Day 4 NFD
    Day 5 NFD
    Day 6 FD

Felt ill yesterday. I don’t know if it was anything to do with FD or I’m coming down with something. I went to Barre Concept class but had to leave part way through as I was feeling sick. Feeling very sick when got home – I wasn’t sure if this was hunger, so ate one grape – what a mistake, I was instantly ill. But at least I felt slightly better afterwards, so went to bed (approx. 9 pm – very early for me). I don’t feel as bad today, but I do feel delicate and have a headache. I still can’t work out if this is due to the fasting (I still have the 500 calories) or I’m still coming down with something.

Hi all UK Co Down star date April 7 of Liz’s log NFD (11.6.75)

Looking forward to a meal out tonight with my Dad, sister BIL and my OH.

Yesterday went well, bone broth for lunch, stir fry with courgetti and prawns for dinner – and then!!!!!! OH produced a bar of chocolate and – ‘well, I have been good all week, tomorrow is my fast day, thought about saying no but didn’t and shared some chocolate and savoured every melting moment. He is usually very good about not having things like that in the house so trying not to feel too guilty. I enjoyed it, now get over it. On the plus side my trousers (pants) are feeling looser and getting longer as there is not as much holding them up lol. Have a good weekend everyone x

    Day 7 – FIN – NFD

Ended up eating about 465 kcals (10 g almonds and a banana for breakfast, a ready-made soup for lunch and a 250 g box of cherry plum tomatoes and two thin crispbreads with cheese and thin cold cuts of turkey for dinner) yesterday without any issues. Keeping busy kept me from feeling hungry. I broke my fast today with porridge (60 g rolled oats added to boiling water (350 ml), left to simmer after turning off the heat (10-15 min) and served with 1,5 tbs ground flax seed, 1,5 dl berries (blueberries and lingonberries today) and 100 g of cottage cheese, in case anyone’s interested), a few glasses of water and green tea + vitamins (D and Zinc+C since I’m still sick). Still feeling stuffy from the flu, so no news on that front, but lately my ears have not gotten locked and I’ve haven’t felt the need to blow my nose that often.

@jennferb Regarding your question about fasting when feeling unwell – this is what’s written in the FAQ: “Best not to. Fasting will stress your body, that seems to be one of the ways that it helps (stress provokes repair), but you shouldn’t over stress.” I’m showing a bad example by fasting anyway, but I decided to do it only after my symptoms lessened. I have not noticed any negative outcomes so far.

@dykask I agree, 5 g is a lot, and still people here tend to exceed that number (women 6-7 g/day, men 8-9 g/day). My dad is probably one of the people amping up those numbers – he adds salt to more or less anything he eats (which is mostly meat and fat). Occasionally I’ve even seen him straight up eat finger salt, but despite this his blood pressure is pretty low. It’s a shame to hear that your dad doesn’t seem to be taken care of properly. I hope he’s leading a healthy life. And yes, reading about the study group being able to tweak the MRI sounds very impressive, a task for clever minds.
I hope you feel better soon (regarding the sugar). Reading about your reaction has me a little worried about what will happen in my body when I reintroduce sugar to my diet after lent. I’ve noticed before that eating too much sweets upsets my stomach, but I tended to believe it was due to what I ate not being lactose free. I suppose I’ll have to tread carefully and not overindulge.

@couscous Interesting, I had never heard about the project before, but having read a little about it from their website I can see it also having an effect on me (tobacco laws etc.). I must say that the results are indeed impressive and prove once again just how big and effect nutrition and our habits have on our lives.
Overall, weight is an issue in Finland – according to studies from 2012 the average BMI for working age women is 26.0 and men 27.1. 46% of women are overweight, 19% obese, and for men those numbers are 66% and 20%. Adults being overweight is more common in Finland than in other Nordic countries. Comparing these numbers on an European scale puts us slightly above average but below South European countries and Great Britain. (Source THL (in Finnish once again))
Some years ago there were news about how the Nordic diet is a good alternative for the Mediterranean one, but the problem is that most people here tend to stick to the Western diet with its processed foods etc. instead.

    Day 7: Gloucestershire, UK: NFD

@coda should that not be star date 7.417 😁😜

    Day 7 – USA – NFD

    Day 1 weight: 177
    Day 7 weight: 174.6
End of month goal weight: 170

Good morning everyone! What a pleasure to read the posts from you all in the UK and Europe And Australia this morning! So many interesting and inspiring stories.

@chumi: Way to go on your FD!! 👏👏 I didn’t know overweight was a problem in Finland. I think of the Finnish as svelte!

@stevetoontaxi and @lilymartin: I sure hope you feel better!

@coda: Loose trousers is the *best* feeling, isn’t it? That’s what I am aiming for.

@sarah57: Total pounds lost – 37? Wow! I am so inspired. Good for you!!!👍

@strawberriesandcream: enjoying an evening of theater with wine and cheese sounds to me like what life is supposed to be about. I say good for you!

@johnnyr and @missymay: congrats on successful FD! ✨💫✨

My FD yesterday was successful – I totaled just over 500 calories. Would have been under but I ended the day with 1/4 ounce of dark chocolate. Slept really well, though I did wake up a couple of times with a growling stomach. 😉

We’re going out tonight for our weekly visit to our favorite local Mexican restaurant so I have to be extra careful about what I eat and drink, especially because the owner always brings us extra drinks.

Day 7, Cumbria UK , nfd
Just a quick check in, I’m going to try another Saturday fast day tomorrow xx

Day 7 – East Coast Canada – NFD

    Day 7…….Florida….. FD

So, my FD yesterday went out the window, everyone at work decided to order pizza and I joined in. So, it’s back to a FD today!
I could really beat myself up for doing what I did yesterday but decided that beating myself up just turns this WOL into just another diet, and I am NOT on another diet. I’m on an eating plan for life.

Taraga…… Welcome! I’m glad you could join us! Many religions and many great people back in the day used fasting to further their focus on achieving a greater power, well, so to speak considering I don’t know the technical term for it. I think it’s great you’ve found 5:2 to incorporate it into your daily rountine.

Stevetoontaxi…… loved your synopsis of diet clubs. Thinking back to when I did WW and many of those statement while funny as all get out, they are so very true!

Dykask……. in the last couple weeks, we’ve had tons of birthday cakes, I began to realize after my intake of a piece, I threw my body into one heck of a tissy. So, as an experiment, I decreased the amount of sugar I used in the receipe. It called for 1 2/3 sugar, so I used 1/2 cup white and 1/2 cup brown sugar not packed. Well, what I found was the cake tasted the same but my body did not take a beating. So, although, I have reduced my intake of those sort of things, through this experiment, I decide if I do need a treat, instead of buying something, I’m going to make it. So, I know just how much sugar goes in. Now, if only Icoukd follow your lead in the salt department.
