  • Just had my second consecutive day. I have not been eating all day and then have a big vegetable soup in the evening.

Considering trying a 3rd consecutive day. I really feel OK after 2.

I’m interested to find the general consensus on this. Is it healthy/ affective, or stupid.

    Thanks all. 🙂

    Hi Chris,

I am not a huge fan of being overtly aggressive in the reduction off calorie intake. I sincerely believe the road to success is patience and finding a way that is sustainable.

Your body needs a certain amount of calories to function properly. Quite often fasting excessively ends up in binging.

I started my journey over a year ago and I have reached my goal weight a couple of months back. I did alternate between ADF, 5:2 and plain calorie counting.

I have learned that aiming for 1 pound a week weight-loss is sustainable. Anything more does not work for me. It might work for two or three weeks but firstly I do not feel very well during that time and secondly, I cannot maintain this for a long time.

What really helped me was to introduce exercise. I am moving much more and this aids my weightloss goals.

We all need to find out what works best for us. Personally, I would not add a third day of fasting as I can’t see that being good for your body.

    Good luck on your journey,
    Stef.

    Thanks Stef,

I was doing really well on the 2 consecutive days until the evening, then had a meltdown. No way I could do 3 days – not sure what I was thinking!

I’ve managed to lose about 5kg in 3 weeks so far and think I probably need to slow down.

    Cheers, Chris

    Hi Chris,

I started 5:2 woe, 14 weeks ago and so far lost 10kgs. I began intermittently fasting but quickly moved on to 2 consecutive days which I thought was manageable and fitted better to my lifestyle. Since the beginning of March I am doing 3 days consecutive fasting and I can say that it got easier with time. 🙂

How is your diet going so far?

I feel definitely better and I hope to carry on with 3 consecutive days fasting!

    Cheers,
    A

I am doing back to back (two consecutive days) fasting. From what I’ve read, I believe it burns more fat. Plus, the last time I did 5:2 I lost well, but as time went on I got lazy and never got around to my second fast day of the week. I love doing them both together and getting them out of the way. In fact this week, my returning to 5:2, I’m doing two days together and throwing in an extra day (not consecutive) just to jump start me and get me started. But I don’t think I’ll be able to keep that up, except occasionally. Two days are enough!

    Hi @irisblue,

Nice to hear your experience! Since March, I’ve been doing 3 consecutive days and I am very happy so far. I think I am adjusted and used to it by now. My concern is when I hit the plateau, what will my coping strategies will be… Luckily there are many threads discussing the issue at the forum and it’s encouraging to read opinions and experiences of other dieters.

When it happens – I’ll definitely keep at it and increase my activities. I am an amateur open water, master swimmer so I may get back to my old swimming training which I used to swim 2km or roughly 80-100 lengths in the pool – we’ll see! 🙂

Hope you’re having a great weekend!

    Hi all,

I was just about to post and ask about this…
I started 5:2 last week and didn’t struggle at all on my fast days. I found it easier not to eat at all until my main meal around 5/6pm.
This week I was considering 4:3 and fasting Monday, Tuesday, Thursday as it fits my routine. Has anyone tried 4:3 and is it healthy to do consecutive fast days?

I’ve been following IF for a while and have lost 64lbs. I have done 5:2, 4:3, ADF and also fasted M, Tu, Th, F for a couple of weeks. They all work, but sticking to any method long term is difficult if you introduce extra fast days. Everyone copes differently and the only way to find out what is right for you is to try it.
One important thing I’ve learnt is that if a FD isn’t going well, give in gracefully before it turns into a binge.

I am of the opinion is that the health benefits of IF are such that it is a way of life,so I won’t be giving it up when I reach goal.

I’ve been doing a variation of the 5:2. I stop eating around 8pm on Sunday and won’t break my fast till Wednesday afternoon. i.e. 64 hours. On Monday night and Tuesday night, I will eat an avocado, some almonds and 1 egg white. I’ve been doing this for 6 months now. I feel fine.
Question: I was just wondering if it is healthy when I break my fast on Wednesday to have a regular full meal for lunch.

I started the 5:2 diet 2 years ago when I got my blood test results with a diagnosis of “High cholesterol”. My values were 210 Total. 45 HDL and 165 LDL. I just happened to see a documentary of the 5:2 diet and got started that night. Initially, would fast for 48 hours (just water). After 3 months, I went back for another blood test and my cholesterol was 70 HDL and 110 LDL and a total of 180. So I stuck with the program for a couple years. I recently went for another blood test and my cholesterol is back to 240 although my HDL is still good. (70) but my LDL is 170. I then modified my 5:2 to do the consecutive 64 hour fast. I’m headed back for another blood test soon. I wonder if the new approach will make a difference.

    Any thoughts/Ideas?

I’m still awaiting the results of my cholesterol test and even when it arrives I doubt I’ll know what the numbers mean so I can’t help I’m afraid, Stankaps.

I think I might go for a 72 hour fast just before Christmas to bring my ADF to an end and begin 5:2 after Christmas.

If I’m feeling less than happy with my shape then I suppose I’ll carry on the ADF for a while longer.

    Hello, @sarahlou89, @amazon, @stankaps and @pot-bellied-heron,

Really nice to meet you all and hear your experiences. I’ve been doing 3 consecutive days very comfortably for a long time but I introduced in November an extra day. It’s going nicely. I wanted to experiment – not the water only fasting but one evening meal and lots of liquids a day. Unfortunately, in my second week I had a severe constipation problem which scared the hell out of me. So, I’m back with the routine of two meals a day in around my calorie allowance. I do Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. I eat my first meal around 11-12am and my second evening meal around 8 or 9pm. Since December, I’ve been accommodating some social occasions and changing the days accordingly.

I wouldn’t have believed when I started a year ago, that I would come this far. I’m 36, female and have been overweight since I was 7-8 year old. What struck me and kickstarted my journey was the gestational diabetes. I hated pricking my fingers for checking my blood sugar and recording it on to my maternity files – although I was pleased to manage it through a diet. As a result, dieted at the last trimester of my pregnancy but again, I hated diabetes. The genetic predisposition to Type2 diabetes wasn’t a nice future to look for. I had to do something and change my lifestyle – so I did! 🙂

In total, I lost 33.4kg or 5stones 3.6lbs and it’s been an amazing journey – quite incredible actually…
