Unexpected results

  • I’ve started 5:2 after watching the horizon documentary, I wanted to improve my general health. The positive results after only 4 weeks of fasting exceeded my expectations.
    Before the fasting I was always tired (“diagnosed” with chronic fatigue), sometimes so tired I could hardly get out of bed, my hair was falling out, I started developing high blood pressure at the age of 36, problems with mood swings and concentration, join pain in most joints, periods pain so bad it used to bring me to tears, also I was getting sick a lot and always felt cold. I look quite healthy and fit, I’ve worked in fitness all my life yet I felt sick for years. I don’t even know how many doctors I’ve seen and how many tests I had done just to be told that they couldn’t see anything.

    The first thing I’ve noticed was the joint pain, it has disappeared after one week. Then the period pain – COMPLETELY gone, also my period was shorter. My skin is glowing, hair doesn’t fall out, sugar cravings close to zero. I feel energised and normal and my tolerance for cold temperatures is better, sense of smell and taste has greatly improved, not mentioning about the weight loss and being able to see my abdominals.
    The only downside was headache during the first two fast days and I don’t sleep as well when fasting. But I will take it with the overwhelming positive effects. Some days are more challenging but overall it is not that hard. Anyone who is considering fasting, go for it. I feel like I’ve got my life back.

    Way to go Calaa. The headaches will go away after about a month. You have to give your liver a chance to start doing its job again. At the moment all its been doing is grabbing the excess glucose and storing it as fat. It does this really well. The other part, that is, grabbing the stored fat and converting it to glucose and ketones it doesn’t know how to do this very well as its not had to do it in years. So the headaches are partly dehydration (make sure you drink lots) and the fact that your brain is screaming for glucose. After about a month your liver will sort of start doing its job again and start making its own glucose and ketones from the stored fats. Ive been doing water fasts for 10 months now. The last 2 months the water fasts have become ridiculously easy. My liver just flips over to fat burning mode effortlessly on fast days. Im able to do everything I can do on a normal day. Work, ride my bike, go for walks. Not a problem.

    Lost 20 kg in the space of one year. My LDL, HDL, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, you name it, all health markers are spot on.

    Hello all and happy to join you here! I have enjoyed reading about all of the good things happening in your lives as a result of fasting. I am 55 and ready for better health for the rest of my life!

    Today is my official restart date. I had surgery about three weeks ago, I’m going back to work on Tuesday so I thought it was time to start on the fasting again. I had done JUDDD in the past and it worked but 3 days a week left me with some serious diet fatigue (which was the culmination of 30+ years of trying different diets). I have done a reset and tried to change my relationship with food, no dieting for about about six months. I have definitely seen a good change in how relaxed I am around food. I wish I had learned this when I was 20!

    I think the 500 cals now only two days a week will be do-able. I can wrap my head around that concept mentally. I am looking forward to feeling more comfortable in my skin again. I really miss that!

    I’m going to do my fasting days in general on days I work. If I keep busy I forget about eating and the day passes more quickly. Today I am home but hubby at work, so no worries about fixing meals. Going to start walking again when I can get back to my usual twelve hour shifts at work and feel normal level of energy again. Have to wait another 3 weeks to get back to running and weight training.

    I am going to weigh in once a week and also track measurements which really helps me stay motivated, the scale is not always so kind. I measure chest, waist, hips, thigh, calf, upper arm and neck.

    Well I made it through the first two days. Yesterday was really hard, and I was crazy hungry! I went over 500, took in 600 and will have to reconsider how to do this. I waited as late as I could like the first day and that seemed to work. I tried to keep really busy. I think maybe some days really are hungrier than others. No matter what, 600 is still close to 25% of my normal calories so I am just not going to beat myself up about it. Weighed in this morning and have lost 4 pounds, down 1/2 inch around both my neck and calves. Onward!

    Update: Two weeks in…

    No weight loss this week, but maintained the 4 pound loss from the first week so total loss is 4 pounds.

    Measurements:
    Waist: lost 1 inch
    Hips: lost 1/2 inch
    Thighs: lost 1/4 inch
    Calf: lost 1/2 inch
    Neck: lost 1 and 1/2 inch

    Will be measuring and weighing in every week the day after the second fasting day of the week.
