Unexpected reaction

    Tried another fast yesterday which haven’t been that successful in the past due to fainting issues. However, I started out well drinking coffee (with milk but a predetermined amount) and had a Bovril a bit later with plenty of water to drink too, all going well until around lunchtime I fancied a cup of tea (again with milk) and then basically all hell broke loose so to speak. I felt hot and sweaty, dizzy, sick and shaking and as if I was going to pass out to the point of having to lie on the floor until it passed, then I had to eat something to prevent it happening again. Has anyone else experienced anything similar and does anyone have any idea why tea should have this affect. I normally drink tea like it is going out of fashion.

    Sometimes it takes a while for your body to get used to doing without a glucose fix! Try eating a small tangerine if it happens again….they work wonders or a very low calorie drink containing some salt, because it could be an electrolyte problem too.

    Pip-Squeak, this sounds like a hypoglycemic reaction — you might want to get tested for reactive hypoglycemia, which, although somewhat rare, does exist. That little bit of milk in the tea may have caused your pancreas to secrete more insulin than was needed to take care of the little bit of glucose in it, especially as it was lunchtime, a time your body is used to handling a full meal. If you do have reactive hypoglycemia, intermittent fasting may be more difficult for you to manage. You might have to avoid eating anything in small amounts that contain more carbohydrate than protein and fats; for example, you could have a few nuts for a snack, but not a piece of fruit. Milk provokes more of an insulin response than expected for the amount of glucose in it. That could be your trouble, even if you don’t have reactive hypoglycemia. Hope that made sense, morning coffee not all in yet, lol.
