  • Lately, I’ve realised that after years of neglecting my health, working long hours, and spending most of my day sitting, I’m really uncomfortable in my own skin. Every day I struggle with clothes that used to fit perfectly well, and when I tuck in my tops for work, I can feel rolls of skin that weren’t there a few years back. I’ve never tried fasting before, but I’m tired of feeling weighed down. I just want to feel less constricted in my clothes and in my movement.

I work out three to four times a week, but I find myself snacking throughout the day, which is my main problem – sugary snacks. It is a subconscious action of hand to mouth. I’m hoping that fasting might help me become more mindful.

I started my fast at 6 PM today and plan to break it on Sunday, April 13th, at 6 PM. I have already prepared food for the next two days (no processed sugar), with a training schedule planned.

Current weight is 10 stone and 4 lbs.

    Wish me well.

    Update:

The outcome proved unsuccessful. I was not able to control my intake, nor could I refrain from snacking during the day. However, on a positive note, I did succeed in cutting down on processed sugar – did not have any. I recognise that I overindulged in terms of portion size, and I’m curious if trying the 16:8 method or something similar will be more effective.

I am trying again, with my final meal at 7PM today.

    Update:

After two days, I lost 5lbs, and now down to 9 stone 13lbs.

I realised that I need to significantly curb my portion sizes as I over eat. I did not eat anything with processed sugar, which is a great step, and I did increase the amount of veg I eat, protein and water. Today is the start of eating ‘normally’ for five days, which for me actually means, not eating ‘normally’ but watching the portion sizes, processed sugar and food, increasing protein and water. I have changed the plate that I use to a smaller serving size, as the one I use is 25cm in diameter and I have now switched to 17 cm in diameter.

I am in a similar situation in that my clothes are not feeling right on me any more. I really want to lose weight but I have limits to exercising because of Osteoarthritis. I agree that processed sugar is a huge problem and also portion sizes. A smaller plate is a good idea, I need to do the same…..

    Hi Thappy,

The clothes are the giveaway for me. Not so much the scale as it fluctuates depending on the time of the month and the amount of salt/carbohydrates you have eaten the day before.

Today, so far, I have curbed my hunger a great deal eating eggs, chicken and lots of veg on my new plate (a novelty for now). I also get in about 8 – 10k steps a day, and do a few videos here and there. Grow with Jo has great walking workout videos for us with bad knees and joint problems. Videos from 10 minutes to over an hour, with some very kind workouts.

    update:

I am still not quite reaching my goal, even with just one day of ‘normal’ eating left. The main issue is the snacking in between meals. I struggle to say no when food is offered and often find myself nibbling/snacking/picking while cooking. Additionally, even though I was making progress in cutting down on sugar, the Easter break celebrations is a challenge. The fundamental principle of the 5:2 plan is to avoid overeating. During this second attempt and over the 2 day ‘fasting’ period, I managed to lose 5 lbs, but my biggest hurdle has been my tendency to over eat during the five days of ‘normal eating’.

I have now gone back up to 10 stone 3 lbs, and the little success I achieved has ebbed away. I intend to continue my journey, and Sunday marks the beginning of my two ‘fasting’ days.

I’ll give it another week, and I will consider trying one of the intermittent fasting options like 16:8, 18:6, or 20:4 since they allow for no snacking or eating before a certain time (maybe that is the boundary I can be consistent with), a possible viable alternative for me.
