  • I’ve done the 5:2 diet twice before to lose a few lbs before holidays and big events. Now I have a holiday in 2 weeks and my brothers wedding the week after I get back so was hoping to lose a few lbs before hand. It’s been easy before and I has a steady weight loss. This time I can’t lose anything! I’ve been dieting for 6 weeks and I’ve not lost a lb. Time is running out and I’m starting to panic. Help!

I’m not eating any more on my non – fast days and my ex exercise regime is the same. I’m definitely eating at least 2000 calories less a week. I’ve measured myself and I’ve not lost any size. I’ll lose about 2lbs a week, then gain them again. I’m stuck in a cycle of losing/gaining the same 2lbs. Any ideas?

    Hi and welcome:

5:2 is not a quick weight loss diet, but if you have followed 5:2 for six weeks without losing any weight I would have to question if you are really cutting 2000 calories a week from your diet.

A 2000 calorie a week deficit would cause about a 9 ounce a week loss over time. 9 (ounces) * 6 (weeks) = 54 ounces or a little over three pounds.

It is possible you are retaining three pounds of water, but you generally can’t control the amount of water your body retains.

Here is how the numbers work: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/tdee-for-the-curious-or-why-dont-i-lose-weight-faster/

    Good Luck!

    Thank you for the response.

I agree, I should definitely be losing eight. I’ve even started cutting down a bit on non – fast days, but I’m worried I’m going to end up doing a calorie controlled diet rather than fast diet if I drop too much. I can assure you, I am definitely not overeating on fast days. Is there anything else I could be doing wrong? I seem to drop 2lbs over the fast days, then put it back on in time for the cycle to start again!

    Hi Photoready

I too have had this problem and agree that the main purpose of the 5:2 is the health benefits and the weight loss is a bonus. I can only lose a steady pound a week if I calorie count ( I use my fitness pal) on my “feast” days. I need to limit myself to 1500 kcals on those days. Some of us just have a slower metabolism. I am 48 and years of eating a healthy diet but with too large portions have meant my weight has crept up by a few pounds a year. I have lost 18lbs since Feb by weighing and measuring everything and being very strict with calories. 3 months in I do find my appetite has decreased and almost have to remind myself to eat!! Hope you find a way to tweak things to make it work for you. Good luck and keep posting!

photoready, I have been doing some reading lately on dietary issues, and, although there is a lot of alarmist and exaggerated and confusing stuff out there, I am starting to think that some people might have an overactive insulin response to carbohydrates, which would mean that when we eat sugars or starches, our insulin levels go too high and stay too high for too long — maybe not high enough to cause hypoglycemia (which most of us who are overweight wouldn’t get anyway, because most of us have at least some insulin-resistance), but enough to make us get hungry and stay hungry, and enough to keep the fat inside the fat cells, so it can’t get out and get burned for energy — hence no weight loss. If my own weight loss seriously stalls, I plan to try cutting back on sugars and starches every day and see if that makes a difference. Just a thought.
