  • I have been steadily putting on weight for 4years now.No diets I’ve tried have worked. I used to be able to lose weight easily when I was younger, but not now.I had to have surgery recently and when they weighed me I nearly died of embarrasment when they told me the number. 102 Kilos how did that happen?, that is the heaviest I have ever been.Nothing fits, I’m bloated and feel disgusting. How did I let myself get into this situation, I feel 102 not 58. One day about 8weeks ago I was thrown a lifeline. My husband saw a documentary with Dr Michael about the 5.2 diet and he told me about it. WelI that was it we bought the book and I have been on the 5.2 ever since. I have made changes to my diet and cut out sugar and don’t eat the cream cakes I craved or the salty chips i adored. This is doeable for me, I weighed myself this morning and I am 10 kilos lighter. I am 92 kilos as of today and would like to lose another 20kilos. Thank you so much this means the world to me. xo

Well done Missloulou! That’s a marvellous weight loss, you should be really proud. The best thing about this diet for me is getting rid of the dreadful cravings for chocolate and other high carb high cr@p foods! Keep it up.

hi Missloulou and a big well done from me too!!

you are doing really great and what a fab start 🙂

    way to go now!!

Hi Ali, Thank you for your encouragement it really means so much to me.
I am very pleased and proud to have gotten this far because its been so hard to even lose anything before. When you feel disheartned as I have for such a long time now, I found my comfort in food.
My mindset has changed dramatically since I started and having some weightloss as well has spurred me on.
I am the same as you, loved my carbs bread, biscuits, cake, pasta and getting rid of those cravings is AWESOME. I have to keep going for the prize at the end is worth it. Weight loss, Better Health and Better Self Asteem, all of these things sure take a beating.
Thank You Ali and keep up the the good work.

Missloulou, what great news! Congrats on your superb success! Stick with it and the remaining kgs will go as well. Most importantly, be patient and do not despair if you are hitting a plateau! We have all been there and if you follow the plan it will work!

    Best of luck
    Stef.

Hi TerryR – that’s a huge weight loss in a short space of time. I’m extremely jealous!! Well done. Do you have a lot more to lose?

    Ali

Hi Ali. Thank you, yes my target weight is 13 Stone but even now I am feeling the weight loss benefits and my whole physiology has improved from simple thing like my feet not swelling at the end of the day. of course the other hopeful benefits of longevity and less illness will hopefully follow.
How long have you been on this regime ?

    TerryR

Hi TerryR, well you’ve had a great weight loss in a relatively short period of time so should feel spurred on by that. I started the plan Oct 2013. I then took a temporary Christmas role in John Lewis. I was on my feet 11am – 11pm and the fast days made me too cold and tired to cope so I resumed at the end of the contract – 2nd week of Jan. I’ve lost a stone and feel better for it. Would love to lose another 2 but would be happy with 1.5. It’s been slow and frustrating but losing weight is always the same for me. I’ve cut back on the wine hugely and am now fairly strictly low carb and feel better for it. I’m back at the gym and find that once I ramp up my fitness, it comes off quicker. Are you exercising? Keep up the good work!

    Ali

Hi Ali. Interesting you say that about being cold I work outside a lot and have never felt the cold in previous years but this year although not extremely cold I have had to use more layers (just assumed I am getting older Ha-ha).
I started to diet last year and did well but in the summer we had a family illness which bought family form all round the world to the bedside sadly we lost my mother in law in November, but in the preceding months my diet went to pieces with my house being used as a drop in centre by all.
But hey ho I’m refocussed now and this year is the year, I do not do any formal exercise in the Gym but walk regularly and in April am climbing Scafell Pike I also cycle a little as my daughter is training for the Marathon.
Sounds like your also having great success a stone since Jan is very good indeed keep up the excellent work.
like yourself I have a goal to reach but am seriously going to live this lifestyle until the end of my days as I have learnt so much about my bodies reactions to foods. I just ate for any reason any time before, now I know when I am hungry and what to eat eg I cant tolerate any bread except un-leven (chapati pitta etc)
Ive also logged everything on a spreadsheet BP weight BMI and it a real motivator to see improvement. as it is to hear from other motivated supportive people such as yourself. Good work keep going to health.
    TerryR

Hi TerryR, sorry to hear about your mother in law. Your family has obviously gone through a tough time. At such stressful times, I think it’s only right to cut yourself some slack diet-wise, especially as you say your house was a drop-in centre for family, there’s nothing quite like that to throw out a good routine. All the more amazing then that you are back on track to meet your goal. As far as the cold is concerned, I think it might be linked to tiredness. The fast days do drain me and I always feel cold when tired. Perhaps I’m in denial re middle age though!!

Good luck with your climb. That’s a beautiful part of the country.

    Ali

    Hi Ali
Thanks for the support, I see you were/are a personal trainer interesting to hear what’s your view on the other health benefits of the 5:2 or the alternative day fasting diet.
The claims of longevity, increased cognitive powers and of course the reduced chances of the dreaded stroke heart attack or cancers.
These are all of interest to me and I hope they will also accompany the weight loss.
    TerryR

    Hi TerryR,

I completed my diploma in 2004 and although it did contain an element of nutrition, unsurprisingly it was based on government guidelines and the food pyramid. I’ve been aware for years that if I followed those guidelines personally, I’d be overweight as toast or cereal in the morning followed by pasta in the afternoon just doesn’t satiate my appetite. Others on the forum have pointed me in the direction of Dr Jason Fung (see YouTube videos, there are six he does on the aetiology of obesity), he is a diabetes specialist and I think what he says makes a lot of sense whether you’re diabetic or not. He advocates fasting too. The book ‘Wheat Belly’ makes interesting reading and I’ve stripped a lot of carbs from my diet and as a result I don’t suffer the cravings for sweet or fatty foods that I used to. It’s a blessing to be free from that! For years I suffered from plantar fasciitis (very painful foot condition). A week after following the Wheat Belly guidelines, this cleared up! The book suggests that modern wheat can cause inflammation.

I don’t think I know anything more than anyone else who contributes to this forum as far as the other health benefits are concerned. The other suggested 5:2 benefits have kept me motivated though when I’ve had a week of not losing weight. My father lives in a care home as he suffers from vascular dementia. I am determined to do everything I can to not end up with his problems. He used to eat a lot of sweets and chocolate and he drank a lot of alcohol too. I do wonder if these vices were the root cause. He is a very highly strung individual too. Maybe stress was a factor. Who knows. I’ll keep going with 5:2 because I need the discipline. I’m too greedy without it!!

    Ali

    Hi Ali
Sorry for being so long in replying but have been really busy at work and in life.
That is really interesting what you say about the foot condition as I have suffered from bursitis of the hip when I walk any distance fortunately it is not debilitating condition and eases after a few miles but I never realised it had gone until your comments. When I walk now I’m free of it since restriction and fasting (another benefit) great.
Thanks for the heads up on the books I will have a look on the web and enjoy them I’m sure.
    Keep up the good work.

    Terry

    Hi Ali
Well watched the first 2 of 6 videos by Dr Jason Fung fascinating tie ups and figures I think this indicate a lifetime of mis-advice by the health processionals.

    Terry

    Hi Terry

I too used to suffer hip problems; no doubt related to my foot problem. This cleared up a while ago, which is great as I was beginning to feel older than my years! I’ve not had a great week in terms of fasting. It was half term last week and although I managed to fast on Monday, the rest of the week was a disaster! I’m very motivated to get back on track now as after almost a week of poor eating, I can feel my foot hurting again, I’m not interested in exercise and I’m feeling tired. So with the routine back to normal from tomorrow, I’ll restart healthy ways.

Glad you enjoyed the videos. I found him fascinating. As you say, there’s an awful lot of mis-advice out there. A lot of what he says makes sense to me and the best thing about it is that his advice is free. Another good website is dietdoctor.com.

    Have a good week.

    Ali
