  • I’m experiencing VERY low heart-rates (resting) during my fastdays. Last week, I clocked in at around 38 beats per minute right before going to sleep. Should I be concerned about this? I’m not an athlete or super-fit. I just jog and go to the gym “like a normal person”:)

Cecilia, I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but surely this comes into the category of question that needs to be asked of your doctor, not for an online forum? Your health is too important to leave to a bunch of very well intentioned lay people (like me). Good luck.

    Hi Cecilia,
I, too, have experienced low heart rate since starting 5:2. Just wondering how you got on???

Hi Cecilia, I just found this via search and thought I’d point out that abnormally low resting heart rate could indicate that you have anorexia. My daughter is anorexic and last fall was preparing to start a residential treatment program. When they measured her resting pulse at 42, they made us hospitalize her instead. You should definitely consult with a doctor.

My heart rate was also clocked as ‘quite low’ on my last 2 gym member MOTs but my assessor didn’t seem to think it was a problem. I had shown other signs of improved fitness too (perfect BP, blood sugar content, weight height & BMI etc.) so he put it down to that. I agree that you should go to your doctor if yours is concerning you or you don’t think you are fit enough to warrant it but I don’t think I will myself until it starts presenting some kind of problem (palpetations/ tiredness etc.).

There are a lot more symptoms of anorexia than just a low heart beat. Not willing to eat and being very thin come to mind.

Definitely get it checked out. There r lots of heart conditions which can result on abnormal or unusually low heart eg long qt syndrome which can be easily treated if diagnosed but if not, is one of the largest killers of young people (can strike at any age too) http://m.circ.ahajournals.org/content/105/7/784.full
