My 77 yr old mother went to the ER for weakness, cold sweating, nausea, palpitations. She was diagnosed with low potassium – 2.7. She was given two potassium pills and sent home and she is continuing with two pills per day. Her levels have now increased to 4.2 after 4 weeks of taking the pills. The problem is that she is still having the same symptoms although not nearly as severely as those that send her to the ER. She can have a couple of good days were she feels OK and does not have a “spell” and then she might have a couple days were she does have a mild episode. Another thing is her levels have been at 4.2 for three tests – they are not increasing even though she is still taking the two pills per day. I think normal potassium levels range from about 3.5 to 5.0 or something similar. She seems to be right in the middle of the average range, but still having slight symptoms. Is it possible that one person’s “normal” needs to be higher than others? (Her heart has been checked and it is OK). Thanks to anyone who can offer an opinion or some advice.
