  • Hi I am at my wits end. I have had great success with the IF 5:2 protocol. I have severe ME/CFS am very debilitated unable to do any exercise & very little activity, but I had crept up to 76.6 kg over several years being only 161 cm I was getting into the obese range & really couldn’t believe it when I couldn’t fit into size 12-14 & had crept up to 16-18 clothes. My sister has significantly more to lose but she has been trying to lose weight for a long time she is about 175 cm around 120 kgs her BMI is 41. She bought the 5:2 book I gave her a copy of the doco hoping that my success & the information from science behind all this would convince her to try. But unfortunately she has been convinced by the Drs who give lectures on bariatric surgery that once you are in the obese range it’s impossible to lose the weight & maintain it except by having surgery! I a. So mad this isn’t true how can they make these claims?! Can anyone here please offer me any references or information that I could give my sister before she goes under the scalpel. The gastric sleeve surgery is irreversible. I couldnt imagine living the rest of my life eating the way people are forced to eat after they have had this surgery….

I know a couple of people who had it done …. One person – I don’t see a lot of difference in and another has issues from it … I know you can stretch the stomach out again if you don’t also address reasons for eating and fall back into the habits that got us here to begin with …. And then there is the worry about getting enough nutrition from what you can eat .. And the ultimate horror story is a girl who was a year younger than me who had it done and died .. …. Maybe she can try this plan for 6 months and see how she could do … OR she could look up a diet plan prescribed for people who have had it done and try following exactly that for a couple of months (with supplements and doctors care because that is so low cal)

I understand your concern. My son, who is 6′ 7″ tall and 55 years old, weighed over 500 lbs. when he had the gastric sleeve surgery a little over a year ago. It has been a blessing for him. He’s lost over 100 lbs., lowered his blood pressure, making it easier for him to walk, sleep, etc. He can eat almost anything now, but in small portions–eating too much had always been his problem. He feels so much better, is swimming and exercising again, and just so much happier. Of course, it would have been better if he could have just lost the weight without the surgery, but sometimes I think it really is the best choice. Perhaps you could get your sister to talk to her regular physician about the surgery first and see if he/she agrees. Good luck to both of you.

How much does she have to lose .. Maybe the doctor will tell her to lose some before he will do the surgery… I think some here do that now to prove that they are serious about working at it I stead of thinking it is a magic pill type of thing

Rho hi my sister needs to lose at least 30 kgs which she has done in the past but what happens is that she gives up & goes back to old patterns some days I think she doesn’t eat enough plus she’s going through menopause or peri menopause so her hormones are all over the place I know I suddenly started to put on wheight at a certain age & my diet & activity levels were the same… I’m so concerned that she is going to do something which is irreversible if they remove 90% of her stomach & then she has problems there is no coming back from this I’ve horror stories & given her BMI is 41 which is borderline I don’t know why they are accepting her as a candidate for such radical surgery…

    Hi Astrogirl1959,

I by myself am a living proof of that. I’m 165cms and was weighing 97kgs. Believe me, just with walking & controlling food I came down to 84 kgs and kept that weight for very long time, without any significant increase. Then, I determined to come in the healthy range (down to 65kgs) and then started this regime.

As of today I’m weighing 79kgs. Pretty much reducing as we speak. Surgery is not the only option. Believe me, if I can do it, anyone can.
