Good morning all! I would love to join your group!

I just started the program last weekend, with Saturday being my first fast day. It went fabulous, and I’m off to a good start. I did my second fast on Monday, and I’m doing another fast today. As I’m going on vacation the first week of July, I’m trying to do 4:3 until then. However, I’m not going to stress out if I can only get two fasts in during a week, as we have a lot of things going on that might make it difficult to do the every-other-day thing.:)

So far, I’ve had tremendous progress. I’m just thrilled! I am down 3.5 lbs since I started the program less than a week ago. I’m being very careful on my non-fast days, so as not to delay any progress that I’m making. 3.5 lbs for me is monumental! I have Hashimoto’s disease, so it’s been a real struggle to drop any weight at all, despite rigorous exercising, careful nutrition, etc. In the last few months, I’ve cut back significantly on my workouts, which I will pick up again eventually, and I’m only doing yoga and walking for the most part right now. I’ll add the weight training back in probably after vacation. I may start doing some HIIT intervals before then.

The fast days are interesting. Last Saturday, my first fast day, I had no issues. I’m always very busy on the weekends, so it really wasn’t that difficult. I just drank a TON of water and kept busy. However, my fast on Monday? Well, I get up at 4:45 a.m. for work, and my days are long, so I was awake about four more hours than I am on the weekend, and by dinner time, I was ready to chew my arm off because I was so hungry!

I thought I might have the same issue today, but interestingly enough, I’m fine today. So I’m not sure what made Monday so difficult.

So now, less than a week into the program, I feel great. Great about the weight loss of course, but also, something about the fasting just makes me mentally feel good. It’s the best I’ve felt for awhile. I sure hope this continues! I realize that I’m in the “honeymoon” phase of the program. :). I am really hoping that I average out over time to a loss of about 1 lbs a week. I’m prepared for plateaus and all that (not saying I won’t complain about them though!). But I realize that there will be ups and downs.

It will be nice to have a group of people to hang around with on this journey! Again, hope you don’t mind me joining in!

Oh, and my name is Jeannie, and I live in the US, in the state of Ohio. πŸ™‚

    Jeannie

Hi all from morocco! Wee bit cloudy today proving that even Africa can be dull too! Still hot hot hot though so all good and its been a welcome respite from the first 2 wall to wall sunshiny days.Sounds like you’re keeping everyone motivated Ken, good on ya. Having cocktails at the moment, very nice too, eating mostly healthy stuff but that wagon will defo be needed when I get home! Is Charmaine home yet? Hope she hasn’t deserted us.
JeanDee you can add me on Facebook too if you like, my name is Karen Creegan, it would be nice to see your face and know who we’re talking to.
Well better go for now, cocktail awaiting lol! x

    hi jeannie,

it’s a pleasure to meet you. i only started this last week like yourself so it’s nice to join the thread with people who have been on this journey a while.

ken – glad you liked the comment. a friend and i used to change the words to the old hymn fight the good fight. unfortunately i can only remember the first couple. it was…. fight the fat fight with all your might. lay down that pie and seek the light…. i really must try and recall the rest.

    take care all x

    Hi folks

I don’t normally post on here as you may know BUT….I just read Karen’s post on the ‘recent posts’ list.

Posting from Morocco Karen with your cocktail waiting!………. Now that is just rubbing our noses in it; for those of us who live in rainy Scotland/England! And it’s only the middle of summer…

    Humphhhh…
    BooBooxx

    ken
    x

Ken, congrats on the half pound loss! Any loss is a step towards the finish line, in my mind!

Karen, enjoy those cocktails! I hope the weather warms up for you, but I’m sure you will be having a fabulous time regardless.

Taletha, it’s great to have someone along who started at the same time I did! Glad to have you as a buddy!

I survived my fast yesterday. Yesterday was an easy ‘fast’ day for me, just like last weekend. I don’t know why my second fast day, last Monday, was so difficult. However, a weigh in this morning showed no progress after yesterdays fast, but that’s okay. I will admit that I had to succumb to a few calories over my 500. I had six almonds, which probably threw me over by about 50 to 75 calories for the day. Tomorrow will be one week, and I’m still at a 3.5 lb loss for the week overall, which I’m more than pleased with.

Today is a regular food day, although I’m still watching it closely. I’m looking forward to my Chipotle salad for lunch. Do you have Chipotle restaurants in the UK? If not, you are truly missing out πŸ™‚

ken – any loss is brilliant. every little helps toward the final goal. well done you!!

Jeannie – I went a little over, by about 40-50 calories too. I have bits in that i need to incorporate into it at the minute as i cant afford to throw them away but i see it as 540/550 is a fair chunk less than i usually have and i will make sure i buy lighter versions when i next shop. i never heard of the chipotle restaurants. what do they serve?

    take care all xx

thank you Taletha and Jeannie , its words like you have used that keeps me motivated to carry on , I know i am in this for the long haul , its not just a fad , i have 2 georgous granddaughters to keep me going too , one age 4 (next week ) and her sister age 2
    I am such a proud grandad x
Well i did about 3 miles on my bike this morning and felt really good afterwards ,
Keep up the good work everyone ,
I know its weekend again so i expect this thread to go quiet , i will keep popping on to see who has posted, and we have also got FB

    have a great weekend everyone
    ken x

    Hi everyone,

I’d like to join in, if you don’d mind.

I kind of sneaked into the 5:2 after having seen the Horizon documentary on my iPlayer. In January I enrolled in a Weight Loss group but that didn’t prove much good besides the fact that I want to have a success on my scale for the 500€ and I met two really nice people there.

Now I lost 5kg in May, without too much effort. I think that’s brilliant. I’m a stresseater, but IF obviously showed my brain that not getting what I’m craving for doesn’t kill me, this is so amazing. Today I’m fasting, despite having a freshly filled fridge. I’m so proud that I don’t feel the urge to wolf down my beloved salami sticks.

Of course I’ll only know for shure in a couple of years, but I’ve the feeling that IF combined with daily yoga and meditation could be my lifelong diet. It just feels right and not like a burden like all the other diets I’ve tried in my life. And I’m really looking forward to the time when my broken leg has healed and then I’m going for HIT.

Have a great summerweekend you all
    Debby

Whooop, hi guys from a very hot and sunny morocco! Seems the heat has arrived back and must have been in the 90’s today, pheww, wafts herself with a fan lol!Sitting chilling after our evening meal with more cocktails (sorry just gotta be done), what’s weird is the food is lovely and neither of us are overeating? We both think our stomachs have shrunk with 5:2 so it should hopefully be fairly easy to get back on the wagon. Well done on your half lb loss Ken, you are nearly at the stone mark, brilliant going. Its lovely to see new faces on our thread and I’ll catch up with everyone when I get home. Well I’ll check in tomorrow WiFi permitting – now where’s my cocktail…….:)

    x

hi debby, welcome aboard. i have only just joined along with jeannie so we are starting our journey together

karen – sounds like you are having a fab time and making us all jealous here in wet and windy lancashire

charmaine – thank you for the welcome. we’ve all had little breaks from any dieting regime and bad weeks here and there, it’s all part of life as they say. lovely to meet you and to have you back with us.

ken – i’m sure your grand daughters keep you on your toes and active. lovely ages.

    take care all x

    Hi you all,

thank you for the warm welcome.

How is it with you, have you also noticed that the portion size shrinks? It now seems to me that after having followed the nutritional advices and eating tons of vegetables I now have to increase the energy density of my meals. I came to hate the feeling of being stuffed and despite of having snacked salami and cheese today I hardly managed to get the 1800 cals of my BMR (I had it measured, lately, therefore I know the exact rate).

    How do you handle that?

It’s really nice to have you newbies with me on the way, Thaletha and Jeannie. And I’m also looking forward to get to know all you experienced members here.

    Warm greetings from Munich.
    Debby

Hi nymphenburg and welcome to our thread. Yes me and hubbie have noticed that despite being on holiday we haven’t eaten a huge amount more. We are all inclusive so could go back for extra portions and sometimes have but for the most part have just eaten OK amounts. I’m sure we’all have put on weight but hopefully not huge amounts.
Thank you Ken for the weather reports! We don’t come home till early next Friday so hopefully will have stopped raining by then! Becky said it was sunny in Darlo today so keeping fingers crossed!
Hot again today, love it, why can’t the UK be more like this but then we wouldn’t have anything to moan about I guess!
Welcome home Charmaine, hope you had a nice break and I will be finding it hard to jump on that wagon too in a week or so, we’ll support each other OK. Well better go Ron has put a cocktail in front of me……!

karen – sounds like you and your hubby are having a super time. nothing nicer than relaxing in the sun without a care in the world. glad you are finding you are not eating too much more. goes to show we get re-educated without realising it??

debby – i have only done one week but finding it good so far, and am hoping that i will soon be re-educated as you all seem to be doing πŸ™‚

i had my weigh day today and had lost 2lb so am pleased with that as i had gone a little over on my counting (40/50 cals) and using a few bits up that i had in the cupboards during the week. i can soon buy things like lighter salad cream and butter/spread to use on my feast days. i’m the only one in the house so there is no-one to finish off these bits apart from myself :((, but i am using them moderately and therefore know i am eating more responsibly than before.

    take care all x

Charmaine here folks! Very well done Taletha! Good start…great going πŸ™‚ Karen…enjoy them cocktails…so excited that you are in such an exotic sounding place πŸ™‚ Ken…you are doing super…cheering you on as you reach you 1st milestone loss…debby, jeannie, jeandee, jip, david, paradise, flowerpower…hope all is well.

    Hi Everyone…Im back!!

Lovely to hear how you have all been doing really well and welcome to all the newbies, these lot have kept me on the straight and narrow, just proves I need to keep on hear as last week when I couldnt get on I failed!

Good to hear you are all meeting up on FB, I’m Andrea Wallace if you would like to send me a request.

Hope you all are having a lovely day!

    xx

Hello all! I’m checking in from the weekend. I had a wonderful weekend. I truly like my schedule, with my fasts being on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. It seems to work very well for me, allowing me Fridays and Saturdays to truly enjoy what I like!

Taletha, congrats on the two pound loss! I hope every week gives you such great results! It may seem slow, but two pounds a week is a GREAT loss, and over time, think how quickly you will get to your goal with that!

Debby, welcome! It’s nice to have another “newbie” join the group!

Karen, so glad that the weather is so great for you on your trip! Hot weather = many cold cocktails! πŸ™‚

My “official” one week weigh in was on Saturday, and I was down a total of 4 lbs for the first week. It was up a half a pound more on Sunday, but Sunday was my fast day, so this morning, I’m down a pound from that. I’m not too concerned about these ups and downs. I’m really just looking for a trend downwards. I had read enough posts in the forums to see that most people average out, over time, a loss of about 1 lb per week, regardless of how slow or fast they start out. So I’m very pleased. I haven’t seen some of these numbers on the scale in quite some time!

I also have noticed, as others mentioned, that my portion sizes on non-fast days has been smaller. I’m simply just not as hungry. I have also noticed that the fast days get a bit easier (hurray!). Yesterday was probably the easiest one yet. I started getting hungry around 4 pm and had a cup of bouillon, which at only 15 calories, is a great “snack” to tide me over. I’d be interested to know what all of you have in times of great hunger on snack days to hold you over. A cup of tea or coffee often helps me as well.

I have two more fast days this week…Tuesday and Thursday. I’m very routine when it comes to what I eat on fast days. Are you all the same as well? My breakfast typically is a cup of egg whites with 2 oz of ham mixed in, and my dinner is a 4 oz tilapia fillet with broccoli. Not very exciting, but enough to get me through the day, and it’s just easy to prepare ahead of time.

    Hi Everyone,

David, my name is Debby, and yes, I experience that my portion size shrinks. Feels good and I’m starting to adapt my cooking. Today my fast day lunch was just about the right portion size.

Hi Andrea, nice to meet you, too. I’d like to join in on FB, though I noticed that there are lots of women with your name. Maybe you can connect to me, Deborah-Ann Schuster.

Jeannie, wow, you’re doing 4:3, that’s awesome. I want to save that for my first plateau. Fortunately weight is still dropping, lost another kg last week. As for snacking: I always have a little bag of cashews with me in case any craving comes up. I just realized, that on fast days I never had the need to snack. I just stick to my plan and tell myself that fasting is good for me. And after some weeks of fasting I don’t get very hungry anymore.

Although the fasting really works out fine for me and I feel really good, I’m still a little frustated. I tried on a dress I bought last autumn and it’s still tight around the waist. As I have lost about 10 kg since then I wonder where I shrank. Anyway I measured my waist today and will keep track and I also started a new yoga program for the abs. Hope this helps!

Have a nice and hot Whitmonday you all.
    Debby

Hiya, sorry yes there are a few of me about Debby, Im Andrea Wallace, Norwich Norfolk on FB everyone!! x

    hi all,

paradise – i was just going to add you, cant find you at present. there’s a few with the same name but cant see any from norwich. what’s your picture of? when and if i find you there will be a request from Pam

debby – i think i’ve managed to find you. have you got a poorly foot? if so i have sent a request. if not, someone will think they have a stalker πŸ™‚

Jeannie – 4lbs, what a fantastic result. go you!! you are doing so well doing three days. i basically split my 500 into three meals (of sorts). i have a small amount with breakfast, ham with lots of lettuce, cucumber etc and then the remainder for evening meal. i make soups which are filling but little calorie wise. i would like to lengthen the time between eating but work a long day and am up and down stairs on the go all the time and find i get very light headed if i go too long. i’m hoping as i lose some lbs and my body gets used to it i will be able to go more for the “fast” and just have breakfast and evening meal

ken – hope all is well with you. you seem to be AWOL :)) come back and report in for diet duty

Hi Teletha/Pam, my pic is black and white and I have a little girl on my knee (my gorgeous niece) x

paradise – just found you and sent a request. it is a lovely picture x

Hello everyone πŸ™‚ sorry ive not been on today before now ,it has just been one of those hectic days when time just seems to fly by ,
Well i am here reporting for Diet duty ha ha .

My fast to day is going very good , I also tend to stick with the same types of food on my fast days B/fast is always a soft boiled egg, 1/2 slice of toast (for making soldiers ) lol , and 100 ml of tomato juice,
my lunch is either lots of salad stuff , but i do count every calorie including my iceberg lettuce and cucumber, i will sometimes have a slice of ham or a cracker with that , my other lunchtime treat would be some homemade veg soup , i do the same as Karen , make a big pan and freeze about 2 or 3 portions for future days
I find that i usually have about 300 or 350 cals left over for my tea (around 7pm or later if i can hold out ) πŸ™‚ i like poached fish fillets from morrisons , or chicken , with as many veg’s as i am allowed ,
Then go to bed zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz = sleeps soundly hee hee .

I hope that helps in some way ,
Gosh i have gone on a bit ,
I am going to look for you all on FB , i am kenneth Livesey and my pic is one of me wearing a Rochdale AFC footy shirt – sad i know lol

    back again for part 2
Jeannie that 4lb loss is fantastic , way to go girl , yesssss

Davd yes i am ex Army , i did 15 years for my Queen and Country ( loved it ) the one thing you could try for your tummy is “Sit Ups” they are not easy and i suggest you start by laying on your back with your arms at your side and slowly lift your head , neck , and shoulders of the floor , allowing your arms to run down your thighs as you do so , but dont do more than about 10 to start with , and take your time ok pal

Do you know what is really nice about this thread , is the way all our newbies come on and say how well we support each other ,

Paradice / Andrea you are a perfect example , bless you xx and stay with us now lol

ok i will go and try and find you all x
    Ken

ken – lovely to see you.

can I ask how you make your veg soup? I do make soups but am never really successful with veg ones for some reason. they are ok but nothing to write home about πŸ™‚

glad your fast day is going well.

    take care all x

    Hi Karen250463 and lancsken

Hi Karen – I was only kidding about begrudging you your wonderful weather; no wonder we get thoroughly fed up with the weather in the UK…….It has pelted down here again today…….(Itβ€˜s always good to hear that when you are away on holiday!).
I am glad to hear that it has returned to normal wall to wall sunshine for you.
I omitted to add to my post; have a wonderful time.
And sink a few cocktails for the rest of us!

Hi lancsken – I was just β€˜popping in’ to your thread because Karen has tried to help me before which I appreciated. I honestly don’t have time to post on anymore threads but always notice how friendly and welcoming and supportive the folks on this one are!
(Whenever I see your username; I think of an Indian or Polish males name!)

    BooBooxx

Hi Taletha , yes of course im still here πŸ™‚ mind you i will be going to bed soon ha ha
Boo Boo = your a star x but can i ask why Polish or Indian , i am from Lancashire lol.

I am so glad i found most of you on FB . lets all stay in touch .

ok I have had a good day so i will bid you all good night
    and
MAY THE CALORIE FORCE BE WITH US ALL x
    Ken

Evening guys from a very warm morocco. Actually missing the rain now (not)! So just wondered if anyone could add me on Facebook too, my names karen creegan. Would try searching for u all myself but WiFi is a bit hit and miss.
Actually feeling over full tonight so gonna eat light tomorrow, loads of salad and fish so going to stick with that.
Well soon be home folks seeya to now x

Hello to my fasting family – I am not able to fast for some reason…just feeling under the weather. But I still want to cheer you guys on.

Ken – would you please restart our little group again on FB – I miss those chats! and it’s sometimes so easy to connect there!

Karen – you are doing super…enjoy your few days and waiting to have you back to join me in 4:3, 5:2 etc πŸ™‚

Taletha, Debbie, Andrea, Paradise, JeannieOH – happy to see updates and see you all do well…please feel free to add me on Facebook – I will look you up on Facebook and add you all…but I do not talk about my dieting and 5:2 efforts on FB as I get lot of jokes, critisim, and people rolling eyes…and I don’t want negativity to ruin my effort and will πŸ™‚

I am going to introspect and work out a new way of making this work for me…I seem to be falling off track in my effort to be too strict with myself…then I binge eat. I try to be too hard on non fast days and ruin the week. Maybe I should as a start ONLY focus on fast days and be a little relaxed on the rest of the days…

Will let you know how it goes…take care all!

    Morning all
Karen dont wish your holiday away , make the most of every second you and Ron have together , Enjoy it πŸ™‚

Charmaine , oh dear you are down , arnt you , yes i will re-instate the group on FB
for everyone else , there were 4 of us who used to stay in touch regular on FB , i created a group called 5:2 and it seemed to work very well , I have still got it on my FB page somewhere , so when i find it i will send you all an invite to join the group , it just means we can talk about5:2 or anything we care to in a private group , because some of us were getting a bit of stick from others we knew on FB
    Hope that makes sense

Ok I found it and have sent you invites to join the group

Charmaine – I agree with your decision not to discuss 5:2 on FB. I too have people on there who would delight in any failure I had. they would make silly comments that wouldn’t be helpful to me in any way.

I have done various diets in the past and gone into them with such determination and willpower that I have soon started to crave foods and bad things I never really bothered with before the diet. must be something in my mind that triggers off when the word diet is floating around my head :))

that is why I made the decision to start 5:2. after reading all your positive and happy comments, I thought it appeared sustainable. i decided not to be too harsh on myself in the hope this one would work. I am cutting down and doing my two fast days, not denying myself on other days but now consciously eating rather than grab any food that was handy after a long day at work. I am hoping that it will turn into a way of life rather than a fad diet that soon becomes a chore.

I wouldn’t wish to seem forward as you have all been doing this a lot longer than I have. the old saying “don’t teach your grandmother to suck eggs” springs to mind. I just thought that you seem to be a little disheartened with your journey at the moment. I’m sure you will soon spring back and be back on the wagon!! this will be in whichever form of the diet suits you and your old friends and new will be here to cheer you on your way.

    take care x

I would love an invite to the facebook group. I’ll see if I can find it as well (or is it private?). You can find me on facebook at “jeannie leech heffner”. I also would not want to discuss my weightloss efforts on my main page for the same reason others listed, but joining a facebook group is much easier for me to access, especially on the weekends!

Today is a fast day for me. I’m all prepped for it, with my two meals already made up.

Scale was down again this morning, even though yesterday was a regular eating day. I’m completely over the top with joy! lol Seriously, it’s been a couple years since I saw this number!

Yesterday was a tough day for me. I took my 11 year old to the orthodontist for a consultation, and something appeared on an xray that we did not expect, and is quite serious. I was in tears most of the evening, and up in the middle of the night with worry. And I feel just sick to my stomach, so fasting today should be a bit easier :(. I wasn’t able to eat dinner because I was so upset, which probably explains why the scale was down even again this morning. The only thing that concerns me with that is that I’ll be ULTRA hungry today since I haven’t had much since lunchtime yesterday! Maybe the stress and the extra hunger will balance themselves out and it won’t be so bad πŸ™‚

    hi Jeannie,

is your FB picture a handsome dog?

sorry to hear about the orthodontists. hope the news improves with time and everything sorts itself out. it is a worry with unexpected news like that but try and have a little something light later as you don’t want to be totally going without.

glad the scales are going in the right direction for you. how much are you down in total?

I cant wait til I get back to where I used to be. long haul yet but will get there. I have kept an old pair of jeans that I used to love wearing and once I can get the on I will be thrilled. they will probably fall apart due to moths as its been that long but I’m determined!! I think they keep my ankles warm at present!! :)))

    take care x

LOL! Yes, Taletha, that’s me, with my golden retriever, Buddy, as my profile picture! πŸ™‚

As of this morning, I’m down 5.5lbs from where I started on the 31st of May. Keep in mind that I’m doing a 4:3 though, not a 5:2 program. I only plan on doing the 4:3 until I go on vacation in early July. But to be quite honest, I don’t find the 4:3 plan difficult at all. Meaning, it doesn’t seem like too many days to fast for me, as long as I arrange them properly. (of course, I’m only 11 days into this, so I might just be fooling myself!).

I think having the jeans to use as a goal is a fabulous idea! I have a few items that have been a bit snug, so I’m hoping to use those as a guide to progress, as I am not taking measurements. The scale, right now, is my only tool for gauging my progress.

    hi Jeannie,

I have sent a friend request. it will come up as pam so you know its me

where are you off to on your hols?

don’t think I could do 4:3 so think you’re very brave. I am fine on the 5:2 and may give the other a go sometime but will wait until I slow down in weight loss I think
