  • Hello Jip – I noticed your name on the LOACA post. I enjoy both threads, but have little time to read others. Do you enjoy your trampoline? I use mine in front of TV (tellie?) on my off days at the gym. I do have to turn, twist around and make up moves when I get bored, but it’s a good work out. It’s 11:26am where I’m at. Enjoy your evening. You’ve almost made it through your fast day!

Karen, I’m doing 4:3 with you and Charmaine. It went well this week. In fact, the extra fast day kept me focused. I need a bit of a push in my weight loss, although I did grab another pair of trousers from the ‘too small’ stack in my closet – fits like a glove. Happy smaller trouser dance today!

Ken – Enjoy those grandchildren. What a delightful day you have planned. It’s amazing how adults remember detailed, wonderful memories with grandparents. Keep making sweet memories, Ken.

Charmaine – I have another active weekend planned, but saved some time for fun as well. I hope you have a lovely weekend. I’m feeling my HIT routine in my body. A quick, half mile on the elliptical is gaining more results than a steady-paced mile on same equipment. Interesting! I’ve cut my gym time by 30 minutes by incorporating HITs.

Paradise – Hope today’s weigh in is promising

    Missing Mel!

Hello Nina — It sounds like everything is going out the window today — You may want to close that window and lock it! It’s more difficult to fast when you’re entertaining guests. Be kind to yourself. It looks like your mind is in the right place.

David — I trust you are well. I hope the meaning of your name helps to make you feel special in life. It’s a great name!

The vacation plans mentioned on this site sound delightful. I hope we get full reports!

We’re busy at my house downsizing for next spring’s move. After raising 3 children in our home (we were also foster parents) we empty nesters are ready to consolidate into a smaller dwelling. We’ll move ten miles closer to city center instead of outskirts. More convenient to be in town, down the road from our gym, church, and quaint downtown area. Lovely areas to walk and bike ride and we’ll spend less time on yard work and cleaning rooms we no longer inhabit. My town is 100,000 people and we’re 30 minutes from a large, 2 million metro population area.

Take care and be kind to yourselves. Talk on Tuesday. Off to eat my veggie burger then go to the gym. Jean

Back to reading the posts again here after a short break. I went on a short trip to get my son from university. A 16 hour drive each way across the prairie. I remembered to do a 4:3 week before we left because of all your input – so thanks for reminding me. I chose not to fast while we were away. I found out the last time we did this trip that I can’t do fasting on a road trip – it’s too hard. I tried hard to keep the eating under control during the trip. And I got a lot of exercise moving my son’s things out of his room. He was on the third floor with no lift so I definitely got a workout. I must say that being now 45 pounds less than I was when we moved him into the room last year made a huge difference walking up and down those stairs carrying 20+ pounds of junk. I wasn’t even out of breath!!
Everyone is so encouraging. You all are doing so well.
One thing I wanted to tell you when I saw the discussions about the nutrition factors of food is I read a book that was REALLY informative about finding the maximum nutrition out of common foods in the grocery. It is called “Eating on the Wild Side” by Jo Robinson. It lists the fruits and vegetables with the MOST nutrition among your choices – like choosing a granny smith apple over a red delicious. Why carrots are orange and what that did to their nutrition factor, how to not destroy the health benefits of garlic (wait 10 minutes after cutting or chopping garlic before cooking) etc. I found it to be very good advice.
I did pack one thing for the road that was tasty and extremely low calorie – I sliced up a jicama into handy french fry shapes and marinated it in lime juice for a few hours. You can spike it with a little red chili powder after you pour off the lime juice. Its a crispy tasty thing if you haven’t tried it before.
I haven’t looked to see if I have gained or lost weight and I am not going to look for a few days until after I have been back on my fasting schedule.

Hi 3wishes glad to see you back. That’s some trip you did there, is your son just home for the Summer or has he graduated from Uni? Although you didn’t fast (and there’s no way I would have either) it sounds like you ate healthy so hopefully you won’t have put on any weight when you weigh in. Let us know how you do. What on earth is a jicama by the way, I’ve never even heard of one? We either call them something different here (like you call an aubergene egg plant I think) or we don’t get them. I think I may google it!

How are you doing Charmaine? Did your fast go ok yesterday and have you managed to weigh in yet? Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Well Ken we had our wine last night and I also had hummous and some dips to go with it (oh dear) so half a lb up this morning but will try to keep good today.
The paths look wet but not sure if it’s actually raining, I’ll just see when I go out with Harvey. Not doing a great deal today but if it’s not pouring down this afternoon we’re going shopping for Ron’s holiday clothes. He hates picking clothes and it’s going to be a chore for him but now he’s much smaller he has nothing decent that fits so he has to go whether he likes it or not!

How are you doing David? You’ve also been quiet for a few days.

JeanDee, well done on fitting into some smaller trousers, it’s a great feeling isn’t it? I’m not surprised you did because that’s some exercise routine you’ve got going, I think you’re putting the rest of us to shame! I didn’t actually manage my 4:3 this week, too much chocolate in our staff room at work that day, I felt a wee bit shaky that morning so succumbed and the day was ruined. Definitely doing it next week though because it’s the final week before I depart these wet shores for sunny Morocco. Been looking at the temps there for next week and there will be no packing of wet weather stuff or umbrellas because it could be over 100 degrees – that’ll do me nicely thank you very much!

Well guys hope to hear from you later have a great Saturday.

Morning all fasting gang. I am posting a copy of a paste regarding the pressure on our knees hope you find it interesting. when I read about this some years ago it was losing 7 lb would relieve the pressure by 2 stone on the knees.
Gaining weight puts a lot of extra stress and strain on your knees, which must bear the brunt of those excess pounds. The added pressure increases wear and tear, contributing to osteoarthritis. On the flip side, losing weight can help you take a load off, literally. One study (Arthritis and Rheumatism, July 2005) found that every lost pound subtracts four pounds of pressure from the knees for each step taken. In practical terms, losing just 10 pounds means that each knee is subjected to 48,000 fewer pounds of pressure for every mile walked.
I am doing my second day of a B2B happy fasting or non fasting as the case may be. JIp

Hello Gail please to have you on board , yes this is a very friendly thread , and we do give each other lots of support , so please do tell us a bit about yourself and enjoy the ride x Ken

Hello all! Just logging in before bed. Been a hectic day today. But still worked out.

Karen, Ken, JIP, Jean…stayed the same 162 🙂 but have lost an inch off the waist since last week. My HIIT is going great..Jean…glad to have a HIIT buddy… Really good to have you all cheering on for me and each other too.

gail…welcome! My name is charmaine…and yes…we would love to have you join us! :))

Hello everyone , I never got chance to type anything yesterday, Weekends are usually quiet on here anyway , I have read everything up to date so i am getting myself organised for my fast day tomorrow, I will be starting with a soft boiled egg (my normal) this time i have some “Trimmed Green Beans” so i will throw some of those in with my egg and use them as my “Dipping Soldiers” ha ha and i will have that with 100ml of tomatoe juice (19 cals) and a nice cup of herbby tea .

3 wishes , yes can yo tell us more about “Jicama” please

ok I will go for now , good luck to everyone who is fasting tomorrow may the calorie force be with you all x Ken

Hi everyone hope you’re all well. I’ve had a quiet day, made 2 cottage pies, 1 for tea and 1 to portion up fo freezing. Had a 50 min walk and may do some hoola later. Actually my day doesn’t seem so quiet written down lol! I’ve put on 2 lbs since Fridays weigh in so its just as well I’m doing 4:3 this week!

Hoping I can go under Fridays weight or go a fraction under this week but time will tell.
Well better go and look at the cottage pie a so bye for now.

    Afternoon everyone,

wow it will take me a while to get to know you all – sounds like you’re all doing really well.

As I said earlier I started fasting on 6th Jan and have lost a stone and
3.5lbs to date, hoping roughly another stone and a half will disappear over time too, though that will be returning to long since uncharted territory!!!

Been for a walk/jog and a long walk today so am feeling rather virtuous!!

Karen that shepherd’s pie sounds yum – is it a Fastday recipe or just a normal healthy shepherd’s pie?

Thanks for the welcome Ken, wow you’re super prepared getting ready for you Fast day already. I normally fast on a Monday but as it’s a Bank Holiday and I’m off to a friend’s for a BBQ don’t think I’ll manage it somehow!! So am going to attempt to do it on Tuesday instead. It’s half term this week, so I’m home with my children; it’s hard when I’m home with them but I shall try!!

I forgot to say welcome Hilly you are more than welcome to join us! You’ve done really well on 5:2 so far and could probably teach some of us a thing or 2! The cottage pie is a slimming world recipe – I bought the books on eBay earlier this year, didn’t really like the diet but still use some of the recipes and its the nicest recipe I’ve tried. Anyway we just ate it and everyone enjoyed it, clear plates all round! If you are interested Google slimming world cottage pie and it should come up.

So tell us a bit about yourself, I presume you live in the UK? I come from Darlington, Charmaine from India,, David from Cumbria and Ken from Rochdale. I think jip is from Wales so the regulars are spread all over. I work as a receptionist in a hospital and started this 11 weeks ago to lose weight for my holiday on 2nd June. I’ve only lost 6lbs (didn’t need to lose a lot) but gone down a dress size and seem to have lost inches so very happy. My Hubby’s lost 15 lbs and is the lightest he’s been in years. We’re not doing it on holiday so will be back on the wagon when we come back because after 10 days all inc. I imagine we’ll be needing to downsize again! This thread has kept us going I think and I log onto it every day, it keeps me on the straight and narrow.
Anyway better go take my dog out so see you later.

I didn’t realize that jicama (pronounced HEE-kuh-muh) is an unusual item. It is fairly common here where I live – a lot of Hispanic residents here have introduced many of their foods and the rest of us have just jumped on the wagon with them. Jicama is known also as Yam Bean. Only the root is edible. It is grown in Mexico, South America, Indonesia, China, Vietnam… I did some google searches on the internet and found a few lonely souls in the UK searching for it in vain. I suggest trying to find it in an Asian food market or perhaps a Mexican food market if that exists. You might have to google some of the native names for it before asking for it. It has the texture and crunch of an apple – juicy and not bitter. It doesn’t brown when cut up so it is a great addition to a raw veggie platter. You peel off the inedible papery/woody brown exterior to reveal a white interior like a turnip. The sizes of the jicama can be about twice as big as a beet. It can be eaten raw or roasted as a substitute for a potato. The cool thing about jicama is that it has a big amount of fiber, potassium, and vitamin C but a glycemic index of 2 in .25 pounds. I found some quotes from a web site about the fiber:
“It is one of the finest source dietary fiber and excellent source of oligofructose inulin, a soluble dietary fiber. The root pulp provides 4.9 mg or 13% of fiber. Inulin is a zero calorie, sweet inert carbohydrate and does not metabolize in the human body, which make the root an ideal sweet snack for diabetics and dieters.” and: ” Inulin, a fructan, promotes bone health by enhancing absorption of calcium from other foods, protecting against osteoporosis. Inulin has a prebiotic role in the intestine – it promotes “good” bacteria growth that maintains both a healthy colon and balanced immunity. Because it has a very low glycemic index, jicama is a great food for diabetics, and low in calories for those interested in weight reduction.” (isn’t the internet great??)

As for finding it – I saw some web sites in the UK selling seeds and SOMEONE from England had the world record for the biggest jicama root. (like 21KG??) So you could always feel adventurous and try to grow it.

My son has one more year at college – so that makes 2 or 3 more 16-hour one-way trips by car. Once to drop him off and once to pick him up at graduation and maybe one more trip to attend the Christmas Fest Music extravaganza at his college – (500 singers, orchestra, band, handbells and who knows what else) After that he is going to try to apply to the university college of London so we’ll see what’s in store there!!
Everyone have a great day and an easy fast. I get back on my schedule of Mondays and Thursday fasts tomorrow and I am looking forward to it. I really miss it when I skip those fasts.

Anyone else have some unusual veggies, herbs or fruits that we could incorporate in our diets??

    Morning guys

Thank you for explaining what a jicama is 3 wishes. I’m going to google it but I still don’t think we get them over here in our supermarkets! I’d love to try one though.
What is your son studying at Uni? My daughter is hopefully going next year to do Physiotherapy (I think you call it Physical therapy), she’s taken 2 years out after sixth form college and is working, learning to drive and volunteering whilst doing an Access Course to hopefully get her on her Uni course. It sounds like your son is away at Uni miles away, my daughters lucky in that she could travel by train (a 25 minute journey) for her course so doesn’t need to move away and have the expense that goes with that, plus she could still do her bar job part time to supplement her student loans. Am I right in thinking he’s coming over to the UK to study after graduating?

Well I’m fasting today after a weekend of Chinese take away, chocolate, wine and other naughty stuff. I’m doing a back to back fast today and tomorrow then another fast on Thursday. Totally flunked last weeks 4:3 because some thoughtless person at work brought chocolate into our staff room and I sucumbed but I’m not back at work until Thursday so hopefully no temptations! I will do it this week if it kills me lol.

Where are you Charmaine? I’m missing you, you seem to have gone very quiet this last week. Well done on losing that inch last week by the way, your HiiT workouts are paying off. Are you doing 4:3 with me this week?

Ken you’ve gone a bit quiet too, which is not like you at all! Let me know how your fast today goes. Lets get our motivation back guys and start doing our daily posts I’m missing the banter and chatter!

Where are you David? Have the 3 of you gone to a desert island maybe?

Well I’d better go for now, a fairly busy day ahead, dog walk around the park (thankfully the sun is shining today after all that rain at the weekend) then hubby and I are going shopping for his holiday clothes, didn’t manage it the other day due to the rain.

    Bye for now.
    x

Dear fasting family…and special mention to my dear Karen…thank you for being there and looking out for me (along with Ken of course)!

I am the exact same weight 162 lbs which seems like a relief after a weekend but I need want to see my weight move along with those inches. My HIIT is really excellent and I am feeling slimmer. My husband has noticed it too – and the mirror is becoming my new favorite friend along with the tape measure! 😀 When I look back, I started this mid March around 11 weeks back and have lost 8 pounds…and many inches I am sure. I am happy with the progress and hope to continue my effort as I want to be at my ideal weight the day I celebrate my 31st birthday in 3 months time.

This group, this forum, the way of eating has brought discipline and purpose into everything I do around my health…so thank you all for that. Karen, Ken, David, Mel, Jean, JIP, Nina, Hilly, 3 wishes, flowerpower and all those I forget to mention…thank you for making this thread a success, thank you for joining me in my journey…and do stay as we all work towards our goals…

Some of you, like me, have a long way ahead – around 40 more pounds! Some of you are almost there…but I intend to stay on here even when I complete my 40 pound goal to stay focused and more importantly to help others along the way…

Sorry for getting all mushy 😀 I am feeling grateful and have Karen to thank for triggering it off…with “where are you Charmaine, I miss you!”

Take care everyone..as Ken says…”may the calorie force with be you all”

    Ciao!

    Hello Everyone 🙂

Karen , Im here 🙂 I agree with what you say about missing the banter and chat on here so lets all make a big effort to stay here , COME ON all you lovely lovely people 🙂

Hilly you have done fantastic and as Our Karen says you could probably teach us a thing or too, Its never easy when you have the Children at home , thankfully ours are all grown up , we are at the grandchildren stage of life , Please do stay with us on here , I think Karen has given us a kick up the bum hee hee I have never tried doin 4:3 ,

3wishes , thank you for your explanation , I shall try and find some over here , this could be a task for all of us First one the find the YAM Bean gets a prize ha ha

Aww Charmaine we’ve got no problem with you being mushy I was just worried that you had lost motivation. Its nice to read everyone’s daily stories and I look forward to it each morning. It sounds like you are doing really well and losing inches and looking slimmer is more important than losing lbs. I know what you mean when you say you also want the lbs to move along too though.
I’m here for the long haul too – 10 days all inclusive will see me put lbs back on so I’ll be straight back here when I come home. Plus I want to stay at my ideal weight so this will keep me focused.
    🙂

    Hi All

Charmaine if you want to be “mushy” then you be so its all ok 🙂
I know for a fact that it is everyone on this thread that keeps me going , all the input is fantastic from everyone , and like Karen I too look forward to reading what you have all been doing each morning
So just remember Charmaine this is all thanx to you
    love you all x Ken

    Hi everyone,

have read several pages so have kind of caught up with who’s who (well kind of :-))

So good to hear how well you have all been doing.

Some of you asked for a bit more info about me, well I’m in Surrey, am another shorty and have a 13 year old daughter and an 11 year old son. I have always struggled with my weight and have tried all the major diets, Weight Watchers, Rosemary Conley, Slimming World and the advice of a nutritionist (sound advice but i found it hard to adhere to all the time!). Last summer I saw a documentary by Michael Peretti looking at the diet industry; in a nutshell it concluded that dieting doesn’t work and it’s been known for a long long time that it doesn’t long term. I especially remember the rather portly former finance director of Weight Watchers smiling happily at the firm’s own stats which state only 10% of those that achieve their target weight are still there 5 years later, he simply said that means they come back – fantastic for the business. So I miserably thought I’m forever destined to be short and chubby!!!

Then I saw Dr Michael Mosely’s programme and thought wow but it took seeing a colleague at work 6 month’s later who had “melted away” to give me the incentive to try it!!

For me it works because there are 2 days of relative hardship, the rest of the time I can forget about food, if I want that cake I have it but equally if I’m not hungry I won’t bother having lunch. Finally I think I am in control of food rather than it being in charge of me and I think it might actually work for me 🙂

When I started i weighted 11 stone 8.5lbs which for my tiny frame (I’m 5″ and 3/4 inch) that put me way up in the obese column!! 1 stone and 3.5 lbs later I can now wear my size 12 jeans again which I had had to put away, as I didn’t have a prayer of doing them up.

I think I’d like to lose about the same again and then I’ll be happy. It’s a slow journey, usually i only lose about a pound a week but I’m very happy.

Karen I forgot about slimming world recipes, have several of their books, will have to check them out.

Am off this week (work in a school) so will post a bit more but normally can’t post much during the day.

Hope everyone that fasted today made it through. Am fasting tomorrow.

    Gail xxx

Hi Ken what kind words, so its settled then we stay motivated, keep posting and we’ll get where we want to be in the end!

My fast has gone well today, just a hot choc to finish the day and that’s me done. I’ve done about 1 hour 40 mins walking and around 10 mins hula hooping and going to do my stomach crunches in a wee while so I’ve done plenty of exercising too.

I dragged Ron into town for holiday clothes this morning, he hates clothes shopping with a passion and needs some gentle forcing) and he got 3 pairs of jeans (1 in waist 32, 2 in 34 waist) and 6 tee shirts plus a cap and new trainers. He nearly had heart failure at the amount we’d spent and said he could get a sound decoder for his model railway plus other bits for that! I told him he couldn’t wear them on holiday and we ended up having a laugh about it! He looks very slim in his new gear so I’ll be accompanying the new, smart slim hubby on holiday next week! All we need to do is pack and away we go lol!

Well hope you’ve done OK too Charmaine I’ll check in tomorrow to see how we all are, off to watch Corrie now.

I think we must have been typing together Gail we crossed posts!

Its nice to hear a bit about you and where you live. I think I saw that programme you mentioned and it seems like we’re being conned by the diet industry – they get rich, people lose weight on their diets initially, put it back on and more and the whole cycle begins again. 5:2 is so different. I’m like you in that I fast for the 2 days then the other 5 I mostly eat/drink what I want (within reason). There’s nobody telling me not to eat this food with that food and counting points or calories every day (although I do on fast days), it kind of gives some freedom from constant restriction so I know I won’t get few up with it. The health benefits really attracted me too. I’m 51 and 2 and a half years ago my dad had a major stroke at the age of only 72, he’d been on medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol, was lucky to survive his stroke and is quite handicapped now so if I can avoid the health problems he’s had I’ll be delighted.

Its a shame us shorties take longer to lose the weight but as people have said on here, slow but sure wins the race. You’ve done so well to get down to a 12 again and I hope you pat yourself on the back now and again! You’ll get plenty of encouragement here and if you fall off the wagon we’ll help you jump back on so just stick around and you won’t go far wrong.

Well think I’ll go and make my hot choc 🙂

Quick plug vote for Jon Clegg if you’re sad like me and watch Britain’s Got Talent – he’s from Horley (if you have ever flown from Gatwick you will have seen Horley!!) my home town 🙂

PS Well done Karen making it through your fast day. That’ll be me tomorrow – kind of glad went to a BBQ today and have had a little too much to eat!!!

    Night everyone

    xxx

Its not sad at all Gail lol! Must admit haven’t watched it this year though. I’ve never flown from Gatwick but I have visited the next county to yours, Sussex. My Nana came fro Horsham so visited a fair bit of west Sussex in the passed, its a beautiful county. Been through surrey too I think. Have you ever visited up North?

A final post – Karen have been up North many times in my younger days (am 48 now), used to do a lot of walking some in the Lakes and quite a bit in North Yorkshire. Did The Three Peaks once!!! Absolutely love York, though not been for years 🙁

    X

Hi all, sorry iv not been on here for ages. I don’t think this type of dieting is working for me. I just over eat on non fast days. So trying something else. I would love to still talk to u guys, even though not on same diet plan. Hope that ok. Night x

Hello all! Glad to see the conversation going again! FlowerPower you are more than welcome to stay and chat with us! We will support you in your journey.

I am stuck at 162 lbs…for the last I don’t know how many weeks and I am starting to wonder why. Maybe I am getting it something wrong. Need to really watch my food and nutrition and see what small changes can shift my weight.

Karen, Ken…my ever strong supporters…thank you. I am beginning to think there is some invisible glue 🙂

Jean, JIP, how goes? Check back in with us!

David…I know you are off for 3 weeks…hope you comr back and habe knocked off a lot of pounds…

Morning Charmaine. I’m up at 4 am, can’t sleep! Maybe I’m excited about my holiday or something lol!It sounds like you’ve plateaued maybe? It could be a few reasons and if you remember I stayed the same a few weeks back (for 3 weeks), it was so frustrating. It could be the extra exercise making you retain water (I read the other day that when you are building muscle your body has to retain water) or maybe hormones? Are you eating under your TDEE on non-fast days? Drink more water is another thing to try to flush things out. Try cutting down on carbs (less rice and maybe protein/veg based meals). You are losing inches though so that means your body is making muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. What shifted mine was the week I did 4:3, it seemed to shake things up a little and after that things were fine. Don’t get disheartened, if you keep going, hard that it sometimes, you will start losing again. Remember slow but sure wins the race.

Gale, we’re a similar age! I love York too, it’s maybe an hours drive from Darlington and me and my daughter plan a girlie day out there in July, shopping, doing lunch etc. I used to live near the lakes when I was I was married first time around and the scenery is beautiful, well done to you on doing the 3 peaks, you must have loved walking!

Sorry this isn’t working out for you flower power, one of our other friends Mel decided she was going back to calorie counting and it’s ages since we heard from her so please keep in touch and let us know how you’re getting on doing your new thing.

Hey I didn’t know David was off for 3 weeks, must have missed that post so wherever you are keep strong David and may the calorie force be with you.

Well I suppose I’d better get myself back up to bed now and try to get a few more hours in before it’s completely light. So I’ll check in later.
    x

Hi Karen! 🙂 hope you are fast asleep by now and this post doesnt ping on your phone. I am sure you are very excited! 🙂 i stepped on the scales again and was glad to see me at 161.8 lbs 😀 i was so disheartened that I stepped on to again now willing it to shift and it did….0.2 lbs could be just a little loss of sweat maybe 😀 but I will take it gratefully as I was sick of seeing 162. Chat later! Will try cutting portions down…the reason I am hesitant to cjange my diet too much is because I want to do this for life…and my stape is rice, wheat rotis….so I will knock down portions and see. Thank you K!

Hi all, had a manic few days and missed getting on here. Good news is that I lost 2lbs last week, am so pleased with how its going. Fasting today (cant do it on a weekend and bank holidays are a definite no no) and tomorrow hopefully. Hope you all have a lovely day (rain rain rain here) x

    Good Morning everyone 🙂
Gail – welcome again and it is nice to know a few things about everyone , as we really do try and support each other , Stay with us and I have sent the Calorie force down to Surrey to be with you lol .

Flowerpower – Just because you want to try another plan of attack does not mean you have to leave us , SO whatever it is you are doing we all wnat to know , how you are doing , (if that makes sense) ha ha 🙂 in other words stay with us ok lol

Charmaine – you have had a downward movement yipeee ( that sounds rude ha ha ) ,I am sure you are all laughing hee hee , Anyway you are back to loosing ways again , I understand about rice being your staple diet , is there any way you can substitute some rice for more veg , its just an idea, that is what i do with potatoes and bread , i have cut down quite a lot of those and replace them with veg .

Karen – I was awake at 4 am too . dman we could have had a middle of the night natter hee hee , You must be proud of Ron good on him , when do you go away ? You do write some really good things and you are fantastic at motivating people , 🙂 way to go our Karen x

Jip , Jean , David and everyone else let us know how you are doing

Oh yes I almost forgot , my day went very well yesterday , i came in at 550 cals so i had a few to spare , am real chuffed with myself

PS I too watch BGT lol
May the calorie force be with you all x Ken

Charmaine, well done, proud of you girl – a loss is a loss so just enjoy that. I understand what you mean about rice being a staple in India, it’s part of your way of life and culture – in the UK I would say it was bread and potatoes and all the take-aways and junk food that some people eat that make us put on weight. Everything in moderation though and maybe cutting portion size will be the answer.

Ken you are very naughty but yes I did smile at your comment! Behave yourself or I’ll come across to Rochdale and wallop you lol! You did well keeping to under cals yesterday, I’m sure you’ll knock a bit more off this week. Ron saved all his calories until teatime yesterday (god knows how he did it) then had some homemade carrot and coriander soup and a low cal Morrisons meal so maybe that’s something for us to think about… We head out for Manchester Airport on Monday morning so I’ll give you a shout if we pass Rochdale and we’re back Friday 13th early morning. I’m not abandoning you though, will be keeping an eye on you all hopefully while I’m away if I can connect to the hotel WiFi!

Paradise, welcome back into the fold and way to go on going 2 lbs down, you’re going in the right direction. For the record it’s pouring down here in the North East so there will be no long dog walks today!

Talking of dog walks I suppose I’d better get the wet weather jacket out again and head off (I’m certainly not taking my wet weather jacket on holiday that’s for sure).
    Bye for now xx

ths karen, jeendee and charmain, what a long blog to get into!-sorry guys- the bank hols here(in uk) (since i see now we have oz, indian ans hipanic members) have thrown me out and i am really buzy so cant focus-trying to limit my intake though and cant have my next weigh in till fri 8th june is it?

i wont have done so well, but will be back into the swing! with water on my way into work and veggi snacks for breakfast- in london i must have had 1/2 dozen compliments on my looks! one saying i was too thin! and of course i fitted nicely into a pair of trousers i last wore in 2006 b4! i joined wwatchers! but have been tight since!

so keep on going guys and anyone you see occasionally will start noticing!

I may be overdoing it but iu am certainly NOT binging like i used to after a good patch with ww!

Pleased the weight has started to move for you Charmaine, downward is always good no matter how small.

Don’t be coy David jump on the scales and see what has happened you might be surprised. From what you have said you’re doing really well, it feels so good when you start to feel results and amazing when people start to notice.

Am fasting today but am finding it hard, had some knackerbrod, ham and green leaves for breakfast (118 calories) + a tea with a splash of skimmed milk. Don’t feel hungry but have got a horrible headache today! Paying the price for yesterday’s food over indulgences I think!!

Flowerpower fasting isn’t for everyone it’s finding that something that works for you. We’re all different what works for one of us doesn’t work for everyone. Keep going you’ll get there and you will get lots of support here. xxx

BTW gang two things that have helped me on my fasting journey Miso Soup (slight variations but the sachets I have are 19 calories), bit of an acquired taste, but it’s hot and helps take the edge of the hunger pangs. Plus also these products call slim rice (7 calories per 100g ooo that’s low, haven’t tried the rice before with report back it’s made of Konjac flour (whatever that is!!,) or slim pasta (21, calories per serving), have had that several times adds bulk without calories and is made from a Japanese yam, can get it in Holland and Barrett or health food shops. It smells a bit funny, you have to rinse it before heating, has no real flavour but soaks up your sauce. My apologies if you guys have already discovered these gems.

    Gail x

Morning Gail, I’m fasting too (the second of my back to back) so we can support each other today. What is knackerbrod BTW, never heard of it? I’m a wee bit headachy today too, maybe a bit hydrated so I’ll drink a bit more today. Just had homemade carrot and coriander soup and having prawn salad for tea.,I did sucumb to a biscuit though but all counted in, should be fine and under 500 cals. I lost the 1.5 lbs I put on over the weekend and got another fast after today so hoping if I don’t go mad tomorrow I’ll be at my lowest for a while by weigh in on Friday.

Where do you buy your miso soup, I’ve been wanting to try it for a while? I tend to shop in Morrison and haven’t seen it there yet. The zero cal noodles and rice too but not got around to those yet, heard good things about them though.

Morning David, you seem to be doing well too and well done you on fitting into those trousers after so long. Have a peek on those scales I’m sure you’ll have done much better than you think.

    Well better go guys x

    Hi Karen and everybody,

still going as is headache, am drinking lots but just seems to be resulting in frequent visits to the bathroom! y mini goal is to weigh 9 stone something but will be a while yet, maybe by the time school breaks up for the summer (18th July).

Kackerbrod, is a kind of Swedish crispbread, introduced to me by an ex who grew up in Sweden. It comes in a giant round and you just break off what you need. Am not sure where you can get it from, I pop up to a little shop in North London every now and then.

Miso soup, not sure about Morrisons but they have it in ASDA and Sainsburys or I expect a health food shop would have it too. It comes in a small box with about 5 sachets, failing that a mug of bovril or something like that would probably do the job just as well.

Think I’m going to have Chicken Cacciatore tonight (another slimming world recipe, shall have to find the book to see how many calories it is), hopefully it should be ok otherwise my two will be having extras.

    x

i am away karen until 6th june-weds then i can weigh in on the same scales but i dont like to get xcited then feel disappointed so stick t fri/sat weigh in days

    – gail(hilly66?) all those funny things- are they not expensive & fussy & hard to find?

all the books i read say stay off funny foods and focus on simple home cooked high fibre/gl index ingredients-especially organic – with micrnutrients, fibre, antioxdants, b vits etc. since this is a LONG TERM diet you can stick to and achieve long term weight loss rather than yo yo weight movements.

there are loads of lo cal soup recipes.

well done karen remember always drink WATER if you are de hydrated

    Hi David,

they’re not funny especially just not from the UK I guess, I don’t have them often but there are times with a full time job, some private tuition work and two children, when time runs out on me and they do help! The noodles are dear about £2.49 a pack so have them as a just in case. Miso soup, was a while ago that I got them, can’t remember how much it was but not excessive. You’re dead right homemade is definitely better

Have been fasting for almost 5 months now and I think it has become the norm for me and that is mostly by preparing things from scratch.

Where are you on your hols David?

    Gail (Hilly66) x

Hi again, struggling a bit today…not sure why but probably yesterdays over indulgence! Hilly im going to search out Kackerbrod…I love new things to try but get what you mean David with in the long term.

I’m trying to decide what culinary delight tonight will hold…I have carrots, cabbage and cauli to use up so god only knows what I will end up with!

Karen..went out for a walk in the pouring rain with the dogs this morning 🙂

    Charmaine…you go girl!

And to everyone else…I love reading this thread…keeps me sane when the hunger pangs strike

    X

thkd gail-its smoky stressed london-where no-ones freindly, and its more a busmans holiday where I can work for myself for a WHILE.2-IT TOOK YOU A LONG TIME TO FIND US GAIL? is it just 5.2 you have done or slimming world as well?

Hi Paradise, keep strong there’s 3 of us fasting today I
think. I’m shattered today, not sure if its because its my second back to back fast or what. I’ve just woken up,from a nice Nana nap in my conservatory though (just as well I’m not at work today) so hopefully that will perk me up a bit. I’m also ready for my tea now, will give it an hour then have my salad methinks. Anyone else feel tired and cold at the end of a fast day? I actually fell asleep sitting up in the chair last night! I was also freezing which seems to be the norm for me on fast days I guess there’s some scientific explanation for it lol.
This thread keeps me on track too paradise and I love reading about we’re all up to 🙂

    Afternoon all,

brr I’m cold too Karen and often am on a fast day; mind you if your weather is anything like mine (wet and dreary only 11 C according to my car) that doesn’t exactly help either.

Am very hungry right now, hope I make it to dinner!

David just didn’t stumble upon you guys before but you’re stuck with me now!! Most recently weight loss attempt prior to this was Slimming World but that was a couple of years ago, had kind of given up! 5:2 doesn’t really feel like a diet to me more of a taking back control. I can’t believe how it’s going and think I might actually make it to healthy BMI for the first time in a long long time – well fingers crossed, am currently at 27.9 so a way to go yet!!

Paradise Knackerbrod is yummy but I wouldn’t hunt too hard, I only know about it because my now ex boyfriend (Sadly split up in Feb after more than 4 years together) grew up in Stockholm and he took me to the Swedish shop in North London. It makes a nice change; if I spy it anywhere else will let you know 🙂 I love trying new foods and cooking new recipes – lol guess that’s why I’m a cuddly petite!!

You’re all so friendly on here, I feel very welcomed.

    xxx

    Hi all

@ karen- doing slimfast first day today, feeling very tired though prob body just getting used to it.

go on holiday in 9 days its come round so quick. Wanted to lose something before going on holiday.

hope everyone is doing ok. X

Happy Tuesday to all. Your evening may have begun while my afternoon is just beginning in middle America. (With the exception of India and Southern Hemisphere) Holiday yesterday so I’m fasting today. Husband was home and we did a lot of organizing and running up and down steps. We had an outdoor BBQ with neighbors – the entire neighborhood smelled great. I eat very little meat, but can’t deny the smell was terrific. Took a two day break from gym workout and kept busy with home activities. I think my joints needed a rest. I appreciate Jip’s timely comments about our joint health. (Hello Jip!) I’m looking forward to being lighter on my feet while at the gym. Stretching daily at home has helped more than I imagined.

Does anyone do Tai Chi movements?

Has anyone read the new, Beach Fasting book (pardon me for messing up the title) and want to give a synopsis?

3wishes – Glad your son is back home. Thanks for sharing your tasty treats. My sis uses jicama in place of potato or apples in salads. It’s an acquired taste, but I enjoy the crunch.

Karen – I’m looking forward to hearing about your trip to Morocco. How nice for Europeans to be able to be in close proximity to such interesting places to visit. I trust you’ll be burning calories as you walk a lot in the sun. Wishing you safe travels.

Ken – It sounds like you have an interesting life and you keep busy. Love hearing that. This weekend, I purchased 3 pairs of trousers, one size smaller than my current size, as a faith purchase. I placed the new trousers on the small stack. Small steps…

Hilly / Gail — Welcome. This is a delightful thread. I don’t check in daily, but look forward to logging in and reading / responding. I’m looking forward to my next 6 months on 5:2 as I’m beginning month 4. I have slightly over 2 stones remaining, however, I prefer to weigh only once a month. Experts say otherwise but I’m trying to keep it simple. Glad you stopped in. Please stay a while.

Charmaine – ‘Good on ‘ya’ for working out on a hectic day. No doubt you slept well. Hope your fasting is going well. Let’s continue with our HITs. I find the concept compelling. I had 6 ounces of fresh fruit today, lots of water and one cup of coffee with light cream. That should hold me until after my workout. I keep a candy dish on my desk and meet a lot of faculty and staff that way. It’s a game with me — I do not partake of my own candy. I don’t even want to start that! Today I have wrapped taffy candy in my dish. Do you all eat taffy? (This gooey treat is a dentist’s friend.)

David — Glad you’re back in the swing of things. We’re all in this together. We’re making the world a lighter place. Hey, it would be interesting to poll all 5:2ers on this forum and see how much combined weight we’ve lost…

Paradise — Keep that sanity in tact. No doubt we all slip in and out. That’s what keeps us real and interesting. It’s great to have understanding ears on our site. Hope your tomorrow is terrific.

I’m missing some names — I just know it. You are not forgotten. I have a few more tasks to do now then off to the wild, blue yonder. Blessings to all.
    Jean

Hello flower power — I missed your name. I hope you reach the results you want before your holiday trip. Or vacation. Whatever term appeals to you. Please give us a full report upon your return. I trust you’re doing well. Jean

JeanDee: Go to the last page of this page for a synopsis of what the book says.

I recommend you purchase and read it, as I followed the checklist and was much more inspired to read all the writing.

Great book. Just what I needed at this time.

Hi folks, a such a cheerful, merry bunch – you really do provide a lot so support for each other. I had my first fast day today, not easy though managable -despite a headache most of the day. Want to drop my weight by one stone – you guys are inspiring. It’s like therapy – very good therapy reading your posts.

Hello my dear friendly family…Charmaine here (for all our new joiners) 🙂 I am at the same weight. Trying to find started pre measured food options for fast days…as I just underestimate calories. Tops are getting loser…which makes me feel slim :).could do better on the pants 😉

Welcome Donagh…feel free to join in and lose you stone of weight…we are a very kind bunch.

Jean dee…yes…lets continue on our HIIT..it does wonder for inches but not the weighing scale haha. I love stick toffee…we have one that is a lock jaw type 🙂 you really take a lot of effort to write to each one of us personally…you are so lovely. Blessing to you too!!

Karen…Ken…David…Hilly…JIP…paradise…flower power…waiting to hear updates from you. Good luck with slim fast…cal control..yummy diet food ..hula loops and more…

Morning guys, not a good one here in the North East of England, absolutely pelting down with rain and looks set to stop that way all day 🙁

Glad to see you’re still with us flowerpower even though you are trying something else, we’ll still support you whatever. Sort of tried Slimfast (expensive though) and keeping my fingers crossed it works for you. Where are you going on holiday? It’s only 6 sleeps until I flee these wet shores too!

Hi there JeanDee, you write lovely long posts and I enjoy reading them. How did your fast go yesterday? We had a public holiday on Monday too but and the weather wasn’t too bad thankfully but back to rain now. I’ve never tried tai chi or read the beach fast book but my understanding is that it’s a faster weightloss because you’re a bit stricter with yourself and do more exercising, I don’t think it comes out in the States until next month.

Don’t worry I’ll be probably boring you all with my tales of Morocco in a couple of weeks, really looking forward to it. We are lucky that we have these kind of places within our reach. It’s only about 3.5 hours flying time from Manchester yet it’s on the African continant! I’ve also visited Egypt, Greece, The Balearic Islands, Tenerife, Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria and loved trying their foods and experiencing their customs, such a learning curve. Get yourself over to Europe, we’re an ok place to live.

Welcome Donagh, stick around, if nothing we’ll make you laugh and give you encouragement. We’re always pleased to have new members on board.

Charmaine, good morning to you, I’m the same weight as yesterday too, despite the fact I fasted yesterday and Monday. Didn’t quite make a full fast, probably went over by about 200 cals but still alot less than I would normally have eaten. Didn’t do much exercise either because felt tired all day but raring to go again this morning! You are obviously doing something right if you’re tops are looser. I think pre-weighed food might help those scales move downwards, it’s so easy to misjudge our portions (I’m guilty of it too)so a little weighing and measuring will probably do the trick.

So that’s just Ken and David to post I think then we’ve nearly got a full house! “KEN I HOPE YOUR’RE NOT STILL IN BED”!

Well better go for now, will check in later but tomorrow I’m back at work for 2 days then a fortnight off – yay!
