Well, JIPWGP, fasting for as many hours as you can is good from what I have read. Water fasting all day cannot be done if you don’t see it like I do (I mean that I find it easier). In any case, it seems like what I do doesn’t bring any better results, I lose about half a kilo (1 pound) per week as everybody. Only thing is that I don’t strictly count my calories on non fast days (although I know roughly how many I have had at any point during the day) so I may go over by 100-150 cals but I still lose the pound. Also, because I cannot restrict very much my calorie intake on non fast days (I go with my TDEE or about 100-150 more, I rarely go below) I have taken up walking about 70 minutes 5 times a week if possible, to make up for any excess. I am not in any hurry, I am ok with an average of 2 kilos (about 4 pounds) per month, because it’s easy. I am afraid that if I try to push things further I might go off the diet (as has happened sooooooooo many times in the past). How much do you want to lose and when did you start?
Well done everyone on your efforts. Today is my normal fasting day and I have done great so far. Have drunk a lot of water and walked for about 80 minutes, I have already hit 15.000 steps on my pedometer (I generally move around a lot even when in the house, I don’t like sitting down, which is good, imagine what would have happened if I hadn’t been like that).
Lancsken, hope you start the walking, it helps a lot, trust me!

Sorry to report I have gained this week 1+1/2 lbs. I had a good day out on Sunday playing bowls all day but the exercise did not out do the amount of calories in that lovely food provided and what is a girl (umm) to do when faced with it, but eat it. LOL I am fasting Wed, Fri, Sunday and hopefully Monday. I have got to get this gain off plus a pound. Wish me luck. JIP
Welcome back Mel and you’re still part of our family even though you’re not fasting with us so feel free to pop in whenever you can. I guess it isn’t for everyone so I wish you luck with calorie counting. Keep us informed with how you are doing. I’m happy to butt kick anytime lol!
Yes Ken I think you should get the old iPod out and put it to good use and do a little walking, no excuses now the weather might improve!
I’ve done OK today – have eaten sweets and bickies at work though but only had soup apart from that and going to have some hummous and dips later. Fasting tomorrow and Thurs so I’m allowing myself wine tonight to go with supper.
Well I’ll check in tomorrow and see how we all are x
Don’t worry about your gain jip you’re in good company this week both me and Charmaine did the same and we’re both doing 4:3 this week too. Charmaine told me that maybe some of our gain could be medication we’re taking. I’m taking diclofenac and painkillers for my bad back (not sure what She’s taking)and when I googled it they can cause water retention so I’m praying that it’ll go when I stop taking the meds. Anyway keep our fingers crossed we all knock off those excess lbs.
Hi Nina6, this my story so far, sorry to all who may have read it all before.
I got to goal July 2011,lost 42 lbs in 6 months,10 months to lose the last 10 lbs. (17 months in all) size 12’s is wonderful. 3 pts of water a day and walked my little feet off. stayed to goal third anniversary on 5th July 2014 at goal. I hope I have cracked this yo yo dieting. I would like to lose another 7 lb so not always be thinking about 5lb limit. Holidays keep getting in the way of WW. I am now doing 5 days WW and 2 days on the 5-2 started 4/4/14 doing well
But like you,
I’m finding that I over eat on non fast days but I can stick to 500- 550 fast days, I am having a day off today, I put on 1+1/2 lbs today at WW is am going to have rum and coke and start again tomorrow and this tomorrow is going to come unlike so often we promise ourselves. I walk over 15k yesterday that 6 miles and still put on, I have done 13500 so fat today playing bowls and walking. I still my steroids and under active mess have a lot to answer for. Happy fasting JIP
Thanks Karen, I will keep trying, but I cannot give up the meds ever on them for life I’m afraid. OH well I will be dieting for life anyway, I do not want to put the weight back on after all this time keeping it off (except for the odd pound or two.) this 3 years is the longest I have ever kept it off. Happy fasting, come on let’s get it back off. JIP
David, so good to hear from you. Sending you positive and healthy energy. Being unwell can zap your strength. I had to do half exercise routines for a couple of days after that sinus infection. I was only away from the gym for a week but I certainly wasn’t up to speed. Good grief. Good thoughts coming your way, David.
Nina – You are so right! Key to staying on the health path is knowing how to keep that reasonable balance. Sometimes I am tempted to turn into super woman and ramp up the fasting and exercise, then I realize — moderation is the key.
JIP – Stay encouraged. Keep moving. Your body will get the signals. I always appreciate your input.
Karen – Great idea, I may do 4:3 one of these weeks to ‘change the game’ or reframe. It’s good for the body. Please report back. I understand our mind and body get comfortable at times and won’t work as hard when faced with routines.
Paradise – Let us know how the increase in exercise works. I’m a believer! I don’t get instant results when I increase exercise, but one day you wake up and grab that purple blouse you haven’t worn in two years and it fits! Even if you only average losing 1 lb, or 1/2 kilo, a week as I do. Yes, I’m wearing that purple, silk blouse as I type. I guess we need a ‘look at me, my blouse fits’ dance to go along with our ‘loose trouser’ dance.
Diana, I don’t check in each day either, but absolutely appreciate the ‘lift’ when I do. I had a lovely Mother’s Day. Thank you. I sat beside my five-year old grandson and watched him eat ice cream. He kept trying to give me a bite, but alas, I passed. I started out on 5:2 needing to lose 40 lbs. and I’m 5’2″ as well. We must be lovely creatures, indeed! Smile. I’m down 10 lbs. Grateful.
Hello flower — Hope your weigh in went well. As you are aware, muscle weighs more than fat, so keep moving and sculpting your new body. Your holiday is around the corner!
Hello 3 wishes. Nice to meet you. Wow, 3 stones lost! Excellent work. So it IS possible for me to lose 2.5 stones total. How encouraging. Keep visiting with us.
Ken — I’m sorry to hear about your back pain. Hope you are able to enjoy your walks soon.
Mel – Stick with us! We’re all in this together, regardless of our health plans. My husband doesn’t do well with fasting so he’s on another plan. He only needs to shape up and he’s going with the ‘do not eat ice cream every night and ride bicycle more’ plan. Works for him!
Charmaine – Sorry about your weight gain report. You are a pro at this and know how to recover. Thank you for keeping us encouraged and keeping the conversations moving on the board.
It’s spring semester ‘finals’ week at college / my work. What do you all call final exams during the last week of semester? It’s like a ghost town today. A lot of tired faculty and serious student faces. I remember those exam days! Take care and a special hello to names I didn’t include. Keep moving and keep making progress. Check in with us soon.
Jean
Morning campers and for those of you who are not my age/or don’t live in the UK it was a phrase on a comedy show a few years back!
Hope everyone ok this morning. Wow Jean that was quite an essay you wrote above and it was nice of you to include everyone in it, you will lose that 2.5 stone, just keep going with this. I think we call finals week just end of year exams here. Not sure really, I don’t have a young child going to school nowadays as mine are 28 and almost 20 so it’s hard to keep up.
Well I managed to knock another half lb off this morning so happy with that. I’m also fasting today and tomorrow so I’m keeping everything crossed I can knock off the other lb plus another half if I’m lucky. Thankfully my back is so much better today so just going to look after it again, lots of walking in the sunshine and keeping to my 500 cals and who knows.
How did you do on weigh in this morning Charmaine? Are you and lil one feeling a bit better now? I hope so. Going to give my anti-inflamatories and painkillers a miss today and hope that’s what the weight gain has been then maybe that will help too.
Glad you’re back on board David and hope you’re feeling better soon too. Glad you didn’t get beamed up onto that alien ship after all lol!
How are you doing Ken? Fasting with Charmaine and I today I imagine?
Well better go and take the hound out for his walk so let the calorie force be with us all today and have a good day wherever you are.
x
Well done Charmaine, you’re doing well despite the fact you’re not feeling good. Unfortunately the water weight at ‘that time’ is a downside, it’ll probably be me like that in a week or so but we can do it if we focus on the outcome.
Be kind to yourself whilst you’re not feeling well too, if you can’t manage to fast then just watch what you eat and I’m sure that last 1.5 will come off soon.
Take care x

Finally . Mel you are a part of our family on this thread , plus you make us all laugh so dont you dare go anywhere ok , just keep an eye on the soda water lol
May the calorie force be with us all 🙂 Amen
on the subject of meds
-when i started weightwatchers all the extra fruit and veg and regular excercise did loads for my pain relief and general fitness/happiness= since i read so many books that say veg, veg, veg, and fruit of each colour in a day will all improve the body’s ability to deal with toxins(-including free radicals which are the precursors that carcinogens latch onto to make a cancerous cell) of all sorts and therefore manage stress and pain relief.
i might take your advice and just show up at a weightwatchers so i can buy a pedomoter.
i have been ill though so been exposed to huge toxins like paracetamol- i try to stay off it when i am able
Glad you seem to be feeling a bit better David. I think we have to be a bit kinder to ourselves when we are ill because fasting stresses the body out anyway and we are trying to get better so if you went over when you were ill don’t beat yourself up too much about it.
I’ve still only had a banana today (and tea) and it’s already almost 2pm, going for a walk shortly so going to try to go until tea time until I eat my salad now.
x
Hi All,
Good to hear everyone is doing well and keeping positive. Sorry been off the radar for a few days but I have been away working and therefore I haven’t fasted this week yet but am going to tomorrow and maybe Friday (depends how I feel after Thursday)!!
Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement – you all make it so much easier!
x
Good Morning to all our Calorie crunchers , its Faaaast day
So far i have only had water and herbal tea
JIP i also find on non fast days it is very tempting to over eat , I think it is just a case of being strong willpower , and i seriously beleive in this thread for help and support, I am still not snacking and watching my portion control, for me i know i need to do more exercise , someone kick up the bum lol . 🙂
Charmaine , you have done really well, keep it up because you know you WILL get there, 🙂
Paradise , its good to see you back , its ok to drop off the radar for a while and the good thing is , you know we will all be here for you on your return 🙂
David sorry to hear you have not been to good , but your back with us now and all the encouragement you will ever need is right here for you pal 🙂
Mel how is your calorie counting going , give us an update 🙂
Karen , are you going to be walking any marathons again today ha ha , cos i reckon you must of done one yesterday .
Ok if I have not mentioned you by name i’m sorry , but i need more herbal tea lol
speak later 🙂 ken
Hi lancsken and co. now I use to know this guy Will Power you keep talking about, I lost touch a bit and need to get in touch with him again. I know he can help us all. anyone seen him lately. LOl.
Not fasting today because I am bowling this afternoon and there is a nice tea put on for later and I have been good and will be until then. I will get some more water down me ASAP. JIP
nina,
I think I am in your box/situation; I have been trying and maybe suceeded(will know tomoz-weigh in day) by drinking water at breakfast time. I have gone off breakfast bars- which seem to be high in cals and coffee
“Well, JIPWGP, fasting for as many hours as you can is good from what I have read. Water fasting all day cannot be done if you don’t see it like I do (I mean that I find it easier). Well Charmaine I was very confused by the scales this morning, they first showed that I had put on half a lb? Then I got on again and had lost that lb so after weighing again and still the same I decided I must have lost another half a lb. Couldn’t think why I might have gained because fasted and under 500 yesterday, did over 2 hours walking (not quite a marathon Ken but nearly lol) and hula hooped for about 5 minutes. Anyway I’ve fasted again today (my third of the week) and we’ll see how I do tomorrow – for some reason I’m not hopeful of getting down from the lowest I’ve been but we’ll see tomorrow.
I’m looking forward to eating more normally tomorrow and have a homemade chicken tikka masala planned for tea with naan bread, rice, bhajis and samosas so that’s not exactly low cal but I think I’ll just have a small portion of everything. If it makes you all feel better I struggle not to eat everything in sight on a non-fast day and this week I didn’t buy cookies/treats because I know I’ll just eat them!
Bye for now x
Hi Davidrob, I think you have me mixed up with someone else, I weigh often, too often and I get weighed in Wieght Watchers meeting on Tuesday mornings. I have said I am only going to weigh myself after a fasting day’ like it says on here the scales fluctuate after non fasting days and it is the overall end of week weight that counts, down and down again hopefully. JIP
Hello 5:2 friends. Taking a look and checking in. Went to the gym yesterday on fast day and had a wonderful workout. I have no idea where my energy came from. Fresh fruit for lunch, lots of water and then my workout. I’ve been avoiding work outs on fast days, but no more! Funny how we get ideas in our head that are not correct. Hosting friends from Dallas, Texas this weekend. I will not over eat!
Charmaine – Good to see your weight floating away, even if slowly. Good report.
Paradise — Good luck on Friday’s fast. Hope today goes well for you.
David – ‘ello. I can tell you are better just by the way you write. Good job working through your un-well times. Hope you are gaining strength.
Ken – What’s the report on your back? Have you been able to take your walks?
Karen – Wowzers, back-to-back fasts? Super woman. Let us know how this goes.
Every One Else – With guests in town Friday through Sunday I doubt I’ll be checking in. Have an enjoyable Friday and weekend. Don’t do anything Ken wouldn’t do!
Jean
Hi JeanDee its me with the bad back and its so much better now thanks! The back to back fasts have gone well, I did Mon/wed and today. Yesterday I walked loads, around 2.5 hours worth over 4 walks plus 5 mins hula hooping ( the bruises from last week have just about gone. Like you I feel really good on fast days and exercising doesn’t feel like hard work, I also sleep soundly but weirdly feel quite cold on a fast day in the evening. I gained like Charmaine last week plus a little more over the weekend but have lost a little this week and hoping to get a little more off in the morning.
Hope you have a lovely weekend with your friends, try not to overeat ( I do know what American hospitality is like though as I have a pen pal from North Carolina)but treat yourself a little, you could always join Charmaine and I in 4:3 next week if you gain a little
Thank you, Karen. I’m encouraged even more to exercise on fast days. My friends are from Texas, that huge state in the southern, middle tip of America. I’m generalizing, of course, but they like their cowboy boots, beef and beer. I don’t eat beef and prefer wine, so I’ll be good, with few temptations. Terrific friends. Hope I can burn some calories laughing with them! North Carolina is my parent’s home state. Such beautiful, natural scenes of mountains, seaside places and streams. And you are correct — ‘down home cookin.’ The more butter and cream and fried foods, the better! Oh, my. Take care and thank you for your kinds words. Jean
Hi everyone. I’ve been on 5:2 for 4 weeks now. Lost 4 lbs. week 1, 2 lbs. week 2, 0 lbs. week 3, and tomorrow is weigh-day. Just a note that people might find interesting: I looked at all my vitamins, herbs, supplements, fiber etc. and added up all the calories. Some don’t have any, but some do. It appears that I’m taking about 190 calories worth per day! I was shocked! When I multiplied that times 365 and divided it by 3,500 (calories in a pound), it seems that’s 20 lbs. per year! Needless to say, I’m going to start cutting out a lot of them!
Lori
Lori:
Thank you for pointing out that 190 extra calories a day equals 20 pounds a year!
When I hear people say they only ate 1 or 200 calories over their 500 or TDEE for a day, and feel that is OK while trying to lose weight, I know they just don’t really understand the impact just a few calories a day can have on their weight (or weight loss) over time. Just an apple a day over your TDEE can add over 10 pounds a year to your weight (or reduce your weight loss by 10 pounds).
Many people don’t want to worry about calories or calorie counting, but if they are trying to lose weight, they do so at their weight loss peril. If you are losing weight on 5:2, no problem, but if you aren’t, then counting calories for at least a week to see where the problem might be is in order.
Spot on Lori
When you first start (and when you try any new food) you need to know exactly how many calories you are consuming. It is surprising how much one little extra (even on a non fast day) can totally stuff (that’s a technical word) your weight reduction. Record everything with the calorie count on fast days, be aware on the other days and listen to your new reduced appetite, not habit or what your fellow diners think you “should” eat!
Cheers
Purple Vegie Eater
Aww Chamaine I was so rooting for you to lose this week but then you and your lil one have been ill so don’t beat yourself up about it, be kind to yourself. We all need a bit of extra comfort food when we’re not well. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself down and get back on the wagon next week, we’re all cheering you on.
I kind of feel awful saying it now (but I know you’re all so nice and supportive on here so will be pleased for me too) but I lost the gain I put on last week and 1.5 more so I’ve finally broken through that plateau after 4 weeks on it. I’m the lowest weight that has showed on the scale since I started this so I’ve now officially lost 6 lbs. It’s taken me about 10.5 weeks I think, so very slow for me but so worth it because everything I’m wearing is looser. I’m going to buy some new work trousers this weekend because I’m doing the baggy trouser dance and they look ridiculous.
So onwards and downwards to all our weighers todays, keeping my fingers crossed the scales move downwards for you.
Have a great day x
AWWWW, ! i could go on all day reading these fantastic posts! at least I have time_ i did it! in 2 weeks while I was ill lost 7lbs, maybe get ill more often I dont know! now 13 st 7lbs -this was when I lost impetus at WW,
still take a leaf out of your book JIGWP is it you who went to weightwatchers? correct me who was it if I am wrong-was it jean dee? I will get a pedometer at my old weightwatchers if its open tues after bhol monday!
this is why fewer weigh ins work for me so can focus on STRATEGY for eating less.
simoneculv, thks for correcting us (lori in this case~) again-who ever you are? are you a mystery “shopper” -as it were- thats done 5.2 f yonks?-
lorin from the advice I have read and learnt from WW stay off expensive supplements focus on WHOLE FOOD
(Organic, WHOLE grains, WHOLE WHEAT flour and BROWN/WILD rice, if you can fit that into your TDEE, LOTS OF GREENS(Read latest advice on 7(instead of 5) a day, fruit of a different colour in each day where you can)-THESE ARE FULL OF MICRONUTRIENTS- and with fitness training-can make your metabolism better and happier-and of course probiotics, as you can imagine the list goes on)
thks karen,
charmaine, yeah remember, BE KIND TO YOURSELF, being a mum is brave hard and unique-dont allow your self to “selfie” any issues affecting you from your kids, coz your kids and therefore you are not well/or worried.
your child is still at a precious age but you are too, so be kind to yourself.
all dads and mums know the life of the first 10 years of a child are so precious. and the child in its prime of childhood. so relish it, rather than dwell on the things only in your life.
also remember, charmaine, sometimes tiredness affects how you feel about you and the kid and your progress and affects your ability to focus and acheive/put into practice what are in essance your goals/targets.
make allowance for your tiredness, do what you can to rest and recover.
Hi Karen
do NOT feel awful about the wonderful news, that’s what we are here for and it’s what keeps us all going, I am fasting again today, so that makes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week. I will also get Monday in as a fasting day ready for my weigh in on Tuesday. Why is it that the hardest barriers are breaking through the stone barriers and to lose the last few pounds? Happy fasting everyone. JIP
