  • Good morning,
I had a shocking night and I’ve got a sore throat. Just what I don’t need!

Sherry, we four sisters became close in our fifties after a family crisis. We all feel it is a miracle.

I’m another Greek yoghurt lover. No added sugar! I prefer it to sour cream and I also use it in dressings and sauces. Sometimes I strain it so it is thick enough for a spread. And the only dessert I have is Greek yoghurt mixed with a small amount of rolled oats and rested to thicken, then some berries added. So you can see I am a fan!

Very overcast and chilly here today and I can really feel summer eeking out its last days in Sydney. Last night was the first in many months that I haven’t slept with 2 fans on me to keep me cool.
I hadn’t thought of Greek Yoghurt instead of sour cream, so I can now cook my Mexican meatballs which I have been avoiding cooking for a while as I didn’t want to use sour Cr.
I am going hunting for berries at the markets today as I want to get some before they are entirely gone and I don’t like buying produce out of season. It seems so wrong to keep something on ice for months on end just to sell it on demand.
Salma I was reading your Lentil recipe. I have never cooked lentils so want to give it a try. Do you serve it as an entire dish or add chicken of meat to go with it and does it keep in the fridge to be reheated. I am on my own so obviously the quantity is far too big for 1 person. It sounds so scrummy though that I have to give it a try. I am also going to have a go at your other recipe and hope that is one I can freeze. Thanks for sharing these.

Cinque, I am sorry you are poorly. Keep rugged up and rested as you well know and knock it on the head.
P>S I love the little icons you use.

    Hiya girls..

Cinque.. The presentation went very well.. Phew! Your good wishes did the trick. THANKS!
Inalso have 3 sisters..we have interesting dynamics but although we each live in a different country, we try to get together as often as we can and speak very frequently. I feel lucky.

Speckles.. Greek youghurt is very good for you. It is also VERY easy to make. I can give you the recipe if you like. Cinque.. Strained youghurt with some added salt and a drizzle of olive oil is a staple for breakfast here.. It is called lab eh. When it is made with goat milk it is especially delicious.

Happy relaxing Sunday wishes to all of you great gals.
    Salma

    S

Salma, please post your recipe. FD…very hungry today. Distracting myself with tax return prep

Salma, yes please I would love your Greek Yoghurt recipe. I love being able to produce my own food such as sprouts, herbs etc. I used to have a vegetable garden till I realised I was feeding several families of possums and there was none left for me. I Tries covering it all up etc but they are far too cunning.
K-Lo I did mine last week, though for me it is very late and 2 years worth so off today to give it to the tax accountant to process.
    Cheers all

I used Greek yogurt tonight as a base for a topping for fish tacos. I mixed it with rice wine vinegar, juice of half a lime, and lots of lime zest. It was so good that I dumped the rest of the shredded veggies (cabbage and cucumbers) into the leftover topping. I’ll take it for lunch tomorrow.

Greek Yoghurt is KING! Funny isn’t it, a few months ago I wouldn’t have tasted it and don’t think I would have liked it if I had but I now love the slightly sour taste and especially how versatile it is.

Last night I made veal in a mushroom and mustard sauce and mashed some potato. I decided to try the GY instead of a bit of milk / butter and it was sooo good. Winner.

Cinque, I do hope you are on the mend and looking after yourself.

    Ok-Doke.. here goes:

    Greek Yoghurt Recipe:

Milk (preferably whole milk – tastes much better)- One or two liters
1-Tbsp Greek Yoghurt (leftover is ok)
Blanket or big towel (yes! That’s right.)

    Heat the milk until boiling.
Pour into a glass bowl or container (with cover preferably) or a pottery container (with non-toxic safe glaze). Pottery is always better as it keeps and distributes the heat evenly, but it is not essential.
Wait until the milk is lukewarm (You judge by sticking a VERY clean finger into the milk and be able to stand the heat for a slowish count of 10).

Once that warm/but not too hot state is reached, combine the 1-2 Tbsp of yoghurt with a bit of the warm milk in a separate bowl and mix well until well incorporated. Return to the milk and stir a couple of times, then cover the container and wrap in the blanket or towel and set aside overnight (if the weather is cool-ish). I usually place the bundle in the oven – without it being on of course) or over the fridge. If the weather is too hot, check back on it in 6-8 hours to see if it has set.

Once set, refregirate. Sometimes, there will be a film of whey on top that you can just remove if you prefer.

One nice way to eat this is to make what we call Labneh (strained yoghurt): To do that, add salt to the yoghurt, then strain it using a cheesecloth. Line a strainer/sieve with the cheesecloth; pour the yoghurt in it; fold the cheescloth over it and place a small plate with a bit of a weight on top. Leave to strain over a bowl for a few hours. Once most of the liquid is removed, place the strained yoghurt in a dish and add salt to taste and olive oil (sometimes even a sprinkling of dried mint). Eat with pita bread or spread over toast. Yum!

Let me know if the recipe works for you. The MOST important thing is to make sure the milk is not TOO hot before putting the yoghurt in. Otherwise, the heat would kill the yoghurt live bacteria which form the yoghurt.

    Good luck.

    Hi ladies,
I’ve been absent .. Fell off the wagon and have been enjoying ice cream with chocolate sauce, french fries and even potato chips. I feel pretty bad about it. The weather is very slowly turning into Spring here and so I am getting out more.
I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well Cinque and hope your sore throat has cleared.
Salma I’m so sorry to hear about your Mum. Sending love and good thoughts your way.
I’m loving the recipes on here!
I like to use Kefir instead of yogurt.. It contains more probiotics than yogurt and is lovely on curry. It’s a mixture of watery and thick so not as appealing as Greek yogurt but the health benefits are worth it for me 🙂
doing some more planting of seeds in trays today … And my nettles are up. Will harvest some today to put into our spaghetti sauce for supper tonight. Might make a fresh nettle tea too!
    Wishing all of you well!

Just wanted to add … When we have spaghetti, I cut cabbage in this slices .. As thick as spaghettini size pasta .. And fry it in butter, olive oil and salt and pepper. Then I use this instead of the pasta .. Or I mix it half and half with tee pasta. It’s scrumptious! In some ways better than pasta .. But more rich for sure.

I’m a 55 year old male. Soon to be 56. Was 86kg, now 82 after four weeks on the regime. Easier than I thought but one downside is my blood pressure seems to be high on fasting days. This being one of them.

    Hi everyone!

Busy weekend and badly behaving kids kept me off of here. Very stressful. Also, my daughter is going through a crazy blood sugar episode of ups and downs, mainly at night. Last night I was up three times and you know how hard it is to get a good night’s sleep as it is at this age!

I just had one of my employees phone me saying she wants to meet to discuss some things that are of concern in our office and have been being swept under the rug. Yikes! I just love those kinds of calls! At least she’s kind enough to give me a head up…there’s reframing, right Salma?

Salma, so happy the presentation went well for you! What a relief!

Briar Rose, try not to be too hard on yourself. We all have those crazy eating episodes, some longer than others. Just get back on the horse and ride forward! We are here to help! 🙂

Very interesting article was forwarded to my email by a friend today. Many weird medical maladies that stump docs can be attributed to this. I pasted it here in case you have time to check it out.
    http://goop.com/the-medical-medium-and-whats-potentially-at-the-root-of-medical-mysteries/

Ok, I have to take a shower and get ready so I can meet that employee for coffee and discuss the “issue”.

Wishing you all a great start to the week!

    Sherry

    Hello everyone,

Welcome TBM700. It is odd about blood pressure rising on fast days, you would think the opposite would happen, but I know it is a thing, there is a whole thread about it: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/high-blood-pressure-caused-by-52/
    I hope yours settles down!

Love all the Greek yoghurt pleasure! I find when I make it I need to strain it for a couple of hours to get it to the thicker, creamier consistency of Greek yoghurt (and more straining to make labneh).

Salma, yay for your presentation! They hired the right person!

I understand about those sisters dynamics. There are actually five girls in our family of seven, and the dynamics were tricky in every direction. The family crisis brought things to a head, and four of us were able to grow together, and all the old tricky dynamics were able to be turned into strengths. Sadly our oldest sister thinks differently, also our brother (one brother has died) and so that is always a sadness.

Speckles and Briar Rose, thanks so much for your good wishes. My chestiness hasn’t got any worse, so I’m counting that as thanks to you! But I am tireder than ever. Little granddaughter is home with me, her parents arrive tomorrow. She is being so good but very clingy. I am amazed I have been able to write some posts (thanks to the Lah Lahs dvd!).

Briar Rose, my philosophy on the ice cream and chips is: enjoy them! Love every bite. Don’t feel guilty. We are allowed feasts sometimes. The trick is to have them occasionally and really love them when you do. It is a crime to eat something you really want, and to feel guilty instead of appreciating that you can do such a wonderful thing.
The worst problem is if they set off a junkfood frenzy, but a fast day helps with that.
The other part of my philosophy is to make sure that it is the BEST icecream, the PERFECT sauce, the most FANTASTIC chips and crisps, that way, the memory of the pleasure and satisfaction helps you pace out a healthy amount of time before you have them again!

Sherry I hope that conversation went well. Excellent that you are the kind of boss that has made a workplace that allows this process to happen, as there will always be conflicts and crises. I just hope it is small issues easily fixed, and my heart goes out to you having to deal with it when you are so tired. I do hope the work issues and medical issues both settle quickly! Fingers crossed!

Well from the club of tired people I say farewell for now, It is only 9am but she has been up since half past 5!

Briar Rose, I agree that thin sliced cabbage can be a great replacement for pasta. I like it in place of noodles in chicken noodle soup!

Cinque & Briar Rose, I’m interested in your takes on the article I sent above if you get the chance to look it up. Cinque, how fun ( but tiring!) is that time spent with your granddaughter! Are they officially moved out your way now? Then there will be much more time to spend together! Those days when my kids were young seem so far away and yet such a short time ago!

TBM, I’m certainly not a doctor but you might want to get your adrenals tested. I had a wellness counselor tell me if you’re under a lot of stress or your adrenals aren’t functioning properly that fasting at that time might put additional stress on your adrenals- maybe that might affect blood pressure? just something to look into.

The conversation with my employee went well. I think it was harder for her to tell me than it was for me to hear- basically management is not effectively managing- something we suspected anyway. We have a lot of tough decisions ahead of us. I always feel like my employes are family so when they’re not doing right by us and we have to part ways, it’s very difficult .

    Night all!

    Sherry

Wow! It’s a ghost town around here today! Where is everyone? Just wanted to say a quick hello before heading back out to pick up the kiddo’s. Busy morning of kid drop off, shopping for Easter and groceries, and pilates (took a friend with me to do a duet…another way to save $ on pilates, Salma!).

Salma, another resource for you (I hope you don’t mind me adding ideas as they come to me!): You might want to get hooked into the Linkedin.com Alzheimers and Dementia Topics groups and check out Caring.com.

Hubby arrives late Thursday. Can’t wait. I’m tired! 🙁

    Love to you all!

    Sherry

    Hi there,
I’m just about fitting in an email. My granddaughter was late to get to sleep (that’s the time she misses her mum) and early to wake, and wanting lots of attention. I am grabbing this opportunity as she plays with my ipad!

Sherry I am glad the work issue wasn’t something completely unexpected, but sorry that it sounds like a big change needed and lots of work!

I have read through that Epstein Barr article carefully but I don’t find it particularly convincing. I know that most of us have had Epstein Barr virus contact so it is a good one to think might be connected with that huge range of illnesses, but I would want to see some good peer reviewed research. In my case, CFS developed after getting pnuemonia, and while I can’t rule out EB virus, I’d like more evidence to rule it in.

Good luck today with all you are fitting in! Not long now and there will be two of you. Oh that is what I am looking forward to here! and only hours to go in my case! Whew!

Fast day tomorrow, must get organised!

    Hello ladies,

Sherry.. You sound so tired. You poor thing.I know just what you mean about unpleasant work related decisions1!

I want to thank you for the resources you are recommending. I already ordered the book and can’t wait to start reading it. I think it will help me help my mother… So thank you! Please keep telling me about stuff you think I would benefit from. I greatly appreciate it.

I too read the EBV article. As you might know, I have hypothyroidism, and I find it difficult to see how I can reverse my Hashimoto syndrome. It would be great if this were true, but like Cinque, I would need to see more peer-reviewed work before I plunge into alternative therapies. I don’t understand how he connects with his ‘spirit’, but I do not dismiss things I don’t understand. I know that there are so may things we don’t know or understand.

I just bid good bye to my fello book-clobbers. I was hosting tonight which meant I had to prepare and then clean up afterwards. Only 2 people showed up when I had prepared for at least 7. This is annoying to say the least, but having only 2 guests meant it was also intimate and fun. One of our number has a brother in Ireland who reads with us and joins in with comments through Whatsapp. His comments are often spot on and we all enjoy listening to his lengthy critiques.

An FD for me tomorrow (after all that cheeses and wine).. So I am with you all t he way Cinque. I have my soup sorted so I hope it all goes well.

I am listening to the news and it makes me so angry all that unnecessary barbaric violence. An awful way to war up the day.

    Good night everyone,
    Salma

    Hi again ladies,

I agree Cinque & Salma, there needs to be more research done but it is interesting to know- a lot of it makes sense. Yes, I don’t know about the “spirit” issue- weird- but anytime I see something that might be helpful to my friends, I’d feel remiss in not passing it along. Cinque, interesting that the CFS developed after a bout of pneumonia because the article did state that the virus hangs out till the body is weakened from something? I hope I’m not over stepping my bounds…just wanting to pass along anything I think might be remotely interesting to you! 🙂

On a different note, remember all the discussion about a month or so ago re: “Golden Milk”? Well, here’s a yummy sounding ice cream made from it! Definitely a calorie splurge, but a healthy one! 😉

A creamy, coconut milk-based ice cream inspired by Golden Milk! Ground turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, ginger, and cardamom bring plenty of rich, warm flavor to this insanely delicious ice cream.

    Author: Minimalist Baker

    Recipe type: Dessert

    Cuisine: Vegan, Gluten Free

    Serves: 8

    Ingredients
•2 14-ounce (414 ml) cans full fat coconut milk, (~3 1/2 cups or 840 ml | sub coconut cream for even creamier ice cream!)
    •4 quarter-size slices fresh ginger
•1/4 cup (60 ml) maple syrup (sub up to half with organic cane sugar), plus more to taste
    •Pinch sea salt
    •2 tsp ground turmeric
    •1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
    •1/8th tsp black pepper
    •optional: 1/8th tsp cardamom
    •1 tsp pure vanilla extract
    •optional: 2 Tbsp (30 ml) olive oil
•optional: 1/4 cup chopped candied ginger

    Instructions
1.The day or night before, place your ice cream churning bowl in the freezer to properly chill (see notes if you don’t have an ice cream maker). Also, add coconut milk, fresh ginger, maple syrup, sea salt, turmeric, cinnamon, pepper, and cardamom (optional) to a large saucepan and heat over medium heat.
2.Bring to a simmer (not a boil), whisking to thoroughly combine ingredients. Then, remove from heat and add vanilla extract. Whisk once more to combine.
3.Taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding in more turmeric for intense turmeric flavor, cinnamon for warmth, maple syrup for sweetness, or salt to balance the flavors.
4.Transfer mixture (including the whole ginger slices) to a mixing bowl and let cool to room temperature. Then cover and chill in refrigerator overnight, or for at least 4-6 hours.
5.The following day, use a spoon (or strainer) to remove the ginger. At this time you can also add olive oil for extra creaminess by whisking in thoroughly to combine (optional).
6.Add to ice cream maker and churn according to manufacturer’s instructions – about 20-30 minutes. It should look like soft serve.
7.While it’s churning, chop up your candied ginger (optional). In the last few minutes of churning, add in the ginger to incorporate.
8.Once churned, transfer the ice cream to a large freezer-safe container (such as a parchment-lined loaf pan) and use a spoon to smooth the top.
9.Cover securely and freeze for at least 4-6 hours or until firm. Set out for 10 minutes before serving to soften, and use a hot ice cream scoop (warmed in hot water) to ease scooping.
10.Will keep in the freezer for up to 10 days or more, though best within the first 7 days. Enjoy this as a lighter dessert with some serious health benefits!

    Notes

*Recipe adapted from my Vanilla Bean Coconut Ice Cream, and inspired by/loosely adapted from Nutrition Stripped.
*If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can add the chilled mixture to a freezer safe container and place in the freezer. Remove from freezer every 1-2 hours and stir vigorously to incorporate air. This won’t make it as light and airy as an ice cream maker, but it works in a pinch!

    Hi all
Cinque, hope you are feeling better now, it will be nice to rest up after g’daughter goes home to her Mum, but you are lucky to have had her for a few days.
We have son and DIL moving in next week while house stuff being done, plus dog, who is very bouncy. Think they will be with us about 3 weeks, so we have booked a weeks holiday in the middle! DIL is extremely messy so will have to bite our tongues.
Sherry, glad the talk with employee went well, always tough when you are where the buck stops and sounds like work to be done there. Thanks for the rec for the magnesium, started them again and feeling better at night tho did have a few twinges last night, think it relates to how low carb I go. Haven’t tried the glucosamine yet. I have been following an online summit and see Mercola is an interviewee today so will listen to that, I did look at his site but felt it was a bit heavy for me. That ice cream looks lush but am trying to avoid sugar- won’t manage it over Easter but until then….
Last ‘holiday’ Spanish class today, have also been listening to Michel Thomas intro disc and quite like it, have ordered the rest from the library and will load it onto my iTunes account to follow on with. Not sure if I will do any more classes.
Salma, that yoghurt sounds delish. Hope you are coping ok with your parents situation, day at a time and look after yourself, can’t stress that last bit enough.
    Hola to everyone else, Susie

Hello! Let the days slide again….thanks for the encouraging words! It’s still March and difficult, but the down feeling ebbs and flows and I hope it will be gone soon! We’ve been really busy. Our 12 yo daughter is a fairly serious dancer–she is at the studio 4 days a week plus she’s at orchestra another day. They don’t really do competitions but there was one nearby that they went to over the weekend. She had the chance to perform on pointe for the first time since the senior company member had a conflict. She did so well!!! But she wasn’t feeling well so she had to push through on ibuprofen and adrenalin and has been paying the price since–she was out of school Monday and half of yesterday. We’re seeing how it goes today. I hope to make it in to the office and get some things done. We’re also trying to sort out what to do next week for spring break. We could make the 8 hour drive to Pittsburgh to see my son for an afternoon but part of me wants to just rest up and do things around here! We’ll be at my inlaws for Easter and my husband’s brother will come up Monday evening …

Welcome to the new folks! The fasting gets easier. I think it’s helpful to really learn deep down that the hungry feeling will pass pretty quickly. I also wait until at least 4 to eat and I don’t eat carbs on fast days. I try to eat as nutrient and protein rich as possible. I wonder if not drinking enough water could have something to do with the blood pressure issues?

Siblings–I have three brothers and we’re all very different. We’re not terribly close but we are in touch and see each other once in a while. My husband’s family is very, very tight….it feels suffocating to me but I know it’s typical. We see them every few months but when we’re there it’s just very …. conforming, which I’m not used to. I hope my kids are close in a healthy way. They are 8 years apart but still do typical sibling stuff! We tell my daughter she will do a good job taking care of us. I try to practice positive mental health after seeing my parents become so negative…..

I will try to get back on an

    Hello Girls,

Just got back from an All School Fun Run where people (mostly the parents and grandparents of course!) donate $ per lap their kids run. The money goes to helping rebuild an orphanage in Haiti. A big group from their school is going over during Easter break to help out there.

It’s a very warm day today here- feels like summer is coming early! All my plants were withering under the heat and I had to spend a good half hour giving them an extra drink of water!

I’m super happy today! My weight has hit a new milestone….I’m in the 121’s…121.8! YAY! I haven’t been this low in almost 2 years (at which time I hit a low of 120.4 for a brief shining moment). I can feel my goal is in my grasp, but (sigh), Easter is on Sunday of course. Sweets are my big downfall so I will try to make something sweet (without sugar of course) that I can eat and not feel too terrible about.

Susie, my hat’s off to you for letting your son and DIL move in! That can be tricky, but as you said, it’s only for a short time (hopefully! you know how those remodel time estimates go!). My sister had her daughter and SIL living with her for about a year while they themselves did a major remodel on a home for them (it took so long because they did all the work themselves to save money and only on weekends). She had to bite her tongue with her daughter who’s very sloppy and just picked up/cleaned the stuff herself so there was no lasting damage to their relationship! The “bouncy” dog comment makes me laugh! Does it actually bounce or is it just hyperactive? Yes, with Mercola you just take what’s interesting to you/makes sense and leave the rest. That’s what I do with everything. There’s kernels of truth/wisdom and crap in everything you look at…you just have to sort through it! 😉

Carolina, how great your daughter is so talented! Sounds like a dance scholarship is in her future! Poor thing though! Hope she heals up soon with no lasting pains.

Ok, off to do household chores (ugh!) and then it will be time to pick up the kids and take my son to ukulele lessons and then his baseball game (they go till after 9pm on weeknights-way too late in my opinion!!!)

    Adios!

    Sherry

Carolina & Sherry.. such talented kids! It is such a joy and a pleasure to see your kids achieve.. young people are so full of promise and potential.

So.. this is a quick check in as I have had an extremely busy day and am completely washed out. Today turned out into an FD. I had intended to fast but then remembered that Wednesday is not my usual FD. However, the whole day went by without my eating anything until 8 pm.. so it turned into an FD. I decided it would not make sense to go over the 500 at this late stage in the day.. so Yaaay.. two FDs done and dusted for the week.

Soooooo well done Sherry on being so close to target. I would not even know how that feels.. but we live in hope. I am very happy for you.

Welcome to all the new people. As others have said.. it does get easier and it is very achievable. This is the best way of life that I have found in all my years of trying to control my weight. Good luck and welcome on this journey.

Good night everyone.. I am going to hit the bed.. the prospect seems soooooooo inviting.

    Salma

    Hello!

Our last evening in Florida. 🙁 We’re going on a sunset cruise tonight and then up early tomorrow morning for a 7:30AM flight. We’ve had a great time, but back to reality tomorrow.

The wheels have really come off as far as my eating goes the past few days. I won’t go near the scale until Monday, so have a few days to reverse some damage.

My friends at home want to play golf this weekend, so I’ll be getting in some exercise.

Have missed talking to you all….I’ll be back in the groove soon!

    Hello everyone!
So lovely to read through all those posts!

Salma I hope you are snuggled in bed after your impressive, unplanned fast and have the best, most refreshing sleep.

My last days were a bit fastish mainly because I was too tired, didn’t have much food in the house, and did have a clingy toddler on my hip.
Her parents arrived yesterday, but they are currently between homes, so I am in the same situation as you Susie!
They have left their home in Sydney, and will stay with me until they have a new place. But the one they were most interested in was taken yesterday, and now it is Easter, so they may be here a few weeks. We will do some rearranging of things to make it easier (I’m in a small, two bedroom flat).
Fun and games! It may be the last time we are all in one house (until they have their own, and are doing renovations?). We will make the most of it!

I hope your daughter is okay now Catz! Congratulations to her on the competition! And have fun planning for your break! Nice to be juggling some lovely possibilities!

Sherry, congratulations on your milestone! I hope you can make Easter an enjoyable blip!

I need to go, a busy day ahead. Sending good wishes to you all around the world!

Lori, lovely to hear from you!
I hope you really enjoyed all the things you have been eating! Then you can get happily back to your home regime, with golf added in for extra fun!
Best wishes for a good trip home!

    Hi girls,

I slept like a log – no doubt helped by the medication given to me for the inflamed hip that is taking its sweet old time to get better. Only 6 hours of sleep, but deep and refreshing. I feel like a new human.

Lori, welcome back.. I am so glad you enjoyed your trip. Don’t worry about the weight.. if you have been drinking a lot of beer, you will probably have lost rather than gained 🙂 I am still working on my chocolate formula for weight loss!

Carolina is coming out of her funk, which also cheers me up. I just decided to go visit my sister in Istanbul over the long Easter weekend so that we would just chill out, gossip and enjoy each other’s company. It has been quite stressful here with work and parents and I think a complete “un-plugging” from my daily life would not go amiss. I have to watch the food though as my sister is big on food (and is quite overweight) and is not into healthful stuff.

Susie, 3 weeks of son, DIL and peripherals is going to be challenging; even more for Cinque in a small apartment, but, you know what I always say in times of stress/challenge? “This too shall pass” and try to re-frame and focus on the positive of being with your offspring.. As they grow older, it seems more difficult to schedule quality time with our children, so look on the positive and turn a blind eye to the mess and the a deaf ear to the noise. This too shall pass.. and you may be sorry it did !!

To all you great gals, Happy Easter.. enjoy the feasting .. it can all be fixed later by fasting.

    Salma

    Hello!

Today is fast day. I’m hoping to get back to my pre-Christmas weight tomorrow morning….that would be a nice self esteem boost!!

Sherry, wow! I haven’t been in the 120s since high school!!! I bet you look amazing.

Cinque, good luck with the cozy quarters!!

Salma, going to Istanbul sounds exciting and fun. How far away are you? My husband is going to Croatia in May and he’s excited about that.

Lori, so glad you had a nice trip.

I don’t think my daughter will ever be a professional dancer but she loves it right now and she is rather good. I’m guessing she’ll stick with it through middle school but I kind of hope she scales back by high school so she can participate in clubs and things like that. She is busier than I’d like at the moment….

I guess I should make a plan for Easter and spring break as far as food goes. I should be able to limit myself at my inlaws….we’ll see about the rest.

Good luck to those fasting today!!

I am NOT an expert on this subject , but I do know a little ..
Fad diets, exercise, activity, fasting .. on and on .. are NOT the answer .. The mental depression must be overcome first and this ain’t easy .. A VERY good psychologist may be necessary .. I do not think I have ever met one .. sadly .
After this is solved, then, with a happy attitude, things can fall into place .. Things that work with me will NOT necessarily work with others.. Remember , for me it took 60 plus years to be a bit overweight (IMO) and out of shape …
I am probably wrong to opine that someone a bit overweight at age 50, should do something .. maybe , its not necessary to do anything ..
Just be happy and contented , then decide ..A man’s personal happiness is most, but not all of it .

    Hello!

We got home at Noon and it is 5:20 and I’ve just finished the unpacking and laundry! I’m so tired. We got up at 4:30 this morning to go to the airport, and it’s been a long day.

The past couple days have been a blur of mindless eating and I’m feeling poorly because of it. Hoping to back on a good path starting now.

Off to the golf course for the next 3 days. YAY!

    Later!

Hi Oldearthworm, what a great user name.
    Welcome here,
It may seem worrying to hear people obsessing about weight loss, and discussing all the things they are trying, but the forums are the place for that and, as you say, everyone has to find their own way through.

It is a grey Melbourne morning, granddaughter and I have been up for an hour, but now her mum has taken over! Post writing time! 😉

Salma I am so glad you got such a good sleep! I hope you have a most wonderful Easter weekend with your sister! Good luck with strong food boundaries!

Squishy living is fun here at the moment 🙂 I wonder what I will be saying in a week!

Catz, isn’t it always the way that your kids have too much on, or not enough! I hope your daughter finds a nice balance. I hope you find an enjoyable way through Easter, that you will feel pleased about at the other end!

Best wishes everyone for a lovely day, or evening or night, depending on where you are!

Happy Easter to you all. I hope we all have an enjoyable time, be it with family, on hols or just socialising.

This morning I had a hot cross bun. I have planned for Easter this week by doing 3 fasts as I know if I dint have a hot cross bun I would be very disappointed and feel deprived. I am also going to High Tea at a friends on Sunday where we will play croquet and have real tea in real pots and she will make a lot of little cakes and things. So knowing that I am taking a nut slice with me as I know how many cals it is and will just keep an eye on what I do have. I will fast tomorrow as well as what I want more than anything is to maintain my weight over Easter.
Yes, the warm, hot cross bun was worth it! I may feel bloated later as it was carbs but lets wait and see. I am happy to go without chocolate as that is around all year, however I did buy myself a small egg in case I want it. I still have last years Lindt Bunny sitting on top of my fridge. I just know if I crack it I will eat the lot and it will make me sick, hence the small egg this year.

Cinque, how lovely to have the family with you. Don’t forget to say if you need your space as living on my own I know how important that can be.

Salma, I hope you have a good visit with your sister. Maybe you can plan outings to avoid food, or even show her how easy this is. I am sure she will be impressed when she sees you.

Lori, I hope the golf course is not an Easter Egg hunt LOL. As a child we had the golf course at our backyard and our eggs would be scattered around the golf course. I got a picture of someone spending 3 days with a giant eater basket, scouring the bunkers, trees and fairways for all the little eggs.

Oldearthworm, I am sorry you have not found / met a good psychologist. I had PTSD and when I started looking, I know most were family orientated or for kids only etc. So many had specialities then I found this wonderful woman who helped me tremendously. So they are out there, you just have to be specific for your needs and make sure it is their speciality. I agree that depression often comes with being overweight, no matter what age and menopause can certainly make it worse for some people. That is why this board is so great, we can all share with no judgement and the 5;2 or whatever sequence you want to do it in is healthy and natural and achievable for most.
I know myself that just talking on here, I have had many realisations about my weight- My long term goal is, I am going to release 30+ KG to get to a comfortable weight and I know that a lot of issues are and will continue to come up, but that is OK. I am ready to deal with anything. Gently.

Sherry, I don’t think I have EVER been 120 lbs. ( I forget you girls mainly don’t use KG)not even in school so well done you!!!

CC, is it ballet that your daughter does or a range of dance classes. You mentioned Point and I though ballet.
I learned ballroom, Latin and rock and roll for 5 yrs but not till in my 20s. Loved it and even did some comp but at the time it was so hard to find a partner as it wasn’t a male thing, there were about 8 females to every male. Nowadays there are more guys in classes then girls. Sadly I have had most of my back fused now and just walking any distance is a struggle but I dance in my head all the time and LOVE SYTYCD.

I must HOP to it or I will have spent all the day on the computer.
    Cheers

    Good evening ladies!

Hubby is officially on a plane over the Pacific heading my way…yay! Can’t wait to have a partner to help take on half of the kid mayhem (I say this as I type and they’re fighting over the Wii game!). I have to admit, I’m pretty exhausted from single parenting for 2 weeks. I did pilates at half speed today and have been doing coffee a lot lately which is something I rarely do. Oh well, it’s over now!

Salma, good job on the fasting this week! I’m envious of the lovely sleep you had! 😉 How fun that you have family all over the place to visit. I’ve heard Istanbul is just beautiful…lucky you! Have a wonderful holiday with your sister!

Carolina, fingers crossed for you that the magic number appears on the scale tomorrow! I know the 120’s sounds low, but I’m super short so it’s all relative I guess! I used to be 5′ 2″ but doubt I’m that tall now as the ‘ol discs have compressed with age!

Welcome back Miss Lori! Are you sporting a beautiful Floridian tan? What fun stuff did you do on your vacation?

Cinque, best of luck with the squishy living situation! At least you’ve got an adorable little person to keep you company in the morning! How’s your cat adapting to the situation? I know my cats, though used to my kids, run and hide when other kids come around. Is your daughter and husband having any luck finding a new place being that the other one was snatched up?

Spreckles, I am so happy you had that beloved hot cross bun you’ve been craving! You’ve scratched that itch and can now move on! Your Easter plans sound so fun and so very British to me!

My kids aren’t so little anymore and I’m getting some questions about whether or not the Easter Bunny is real (of course the 15 year old knows the real scoop!). I hate telling them the inevitable truth. I feel like that’s when childhood starts to go bye bye. Part of me wants to keep them little and believing in magic forever, you know?

    Sweet dreams everyone!

Sherry. What do you mean the Easter Bunny is not real!!!!!!!
at 54 I still put out a plate for Santa and the reindeer…….

Yes, I have scratched that itch and am happy with that. What a good way to put it. In the past I would have had 2 each of the 4 Easter mornings. They start selling the buns and Choc Eggs as soon as Xmas is over which is pure madness but I refuse to even buy one before the correct time. Same goes with Christmas, I wont open gifts or eat Xmas treats till Xmas day.. I think holding off makes it all the more enjoyable.

Yes it does sound very British doesn’t it. We all wear Easter bonnets, so that is my job today to make and decorate one.
High Tea has become very popular here (unfortunately) but is a delicious way to gather with friends and have a long yarn while someone serves you little sandwiches, pastries, cakes and Tea from a pot. Thankfully each item is small so you just have to decide how many you want and which ones are worth the calories. It will be fun and I am very aware of what goodies are worth it.

Pleased to hear that hubby is flying home to you. You will have a nice Easter too then.

Lori, I hope you are having a great day on the golf course!

Sherry I was 5th out of 7 children and I don’t know how it happened but I can only ever remember thinking what a great game every one is playing.
OH must be nearly home now, what a lovely feeling!

Although, of course Speckles, Easter bunny is real! 🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇

And, oh Speckles, I am missing my own space dreadfully. But I just keep telling myself I will get it back eventually, and of course it is just as hard for the others who are used to having a much bigger space to themselves, and who are longing for their own home.
It is the end of the day, and we have set up spaces to work better. Rose made delicious sausages and mash and lots of steamed veggies for dinner. Such a treat to get cooked for! Little one has just gone to sleep, so I will enjoy the evening for a little while, and then get to bed!

    Best wishes to everyone!

Back to Greek yogurt a sec. Just saw a recipe on the back of the miso box. Mix the packet with sour cream for dip. I bet it would work with yogurt as a dip for veggies

    Good Morning friends!

Had a good night’s sleep and am feeling almost back to normal this morning. I’ll head for the golf course in a few hours and see if I remember how to hit that little white ball!

I’m feeling so bloated and tubby from my indulgences over the past week. Ugh. It sure wasn’t worth it. Sigh…….I’m determined to get back on plan starting now. I’ll face the scale on Monday morning. You may all hear my screams across the world!

Sherry…glad you’re getting some help with the kiddos now. I’m sure that was a long 2 weeks without hubby.

Cinque…do you still have granddaughter with you? The pictures on Facebook were so adorable.

Ok…time for a bit of breakfast…..low carb, of course!

Hello….I had a really good fast day but didn’t quite meet my pre Christmas goal. I know there is a lot of fluctuation so I’m not too bummed. Effort will show in some way at some point. I do wonder if it could be related to having a glass of juice in the evening. I’ve noticed that sugars really cause water weight and I usually don’t have carbs on fast days but I did have that indulgence, even though it was within the calorie limit. Oh well….the biggest thing will be to not blow it over spring break!

Sherry, glad to hear you aren’t too tall with that low weight! I’m a bit over 5’7″ so I think that would be more like 140 something for me, which would be healthy and awesome, especially if it included more toned weight. I swear the flabby stuff is what bothers me. Do you ever see younger people who obviously weigh a lot more and yet somehow look toned? I’ve also fallen down on the exercise this week so I need to get back on the wagon…..my daughter has shut down any conversations about Santa, Easter Bunny, etc. She knows but doesn’t want it spelled out! She is not one of those kids eager to grow up too fast, which is good.

Lori, hope you have an awesome time on the golf course!! So glad you got back safely.

Speckles, my daughter is primarily ballet although she does jazz as well. She has practiced on pointe for a year but last weekend was her first performance on pointe. She is in a company that has seniors, apprentices and juniors. She is an apprentice and was the understudy for one of the seniors who was out for the performance, so it was kind of a big deal! I was never encouraged to dance so I still don’t feel comfortable doing it, which is sad. I “dance’ in the car a lot though!!

Cinque, you seem to have a great attitude about sharing space. You will probably remember this time fondly in a year or two!!!

    TTFN!

    Good morning!
Yes Lori, my darling granddaughter, my daughter and my son in law are all with me until they find a house to lease. They are out looking at houses now. It is squishy here, and tiring, but lovely.
I’ve been so tired with all that is happening, that I have been eating less than usual (preferable to my old habit of eating more when I am tired: junk food more!). I woke up this morning and felt so skinny that I have decided to spend a few weeks fasting every Sunday, as usual, but every second Thursday.
    I’ll see how that goes.

Have a lovely day at golf Lori. And just think, if it really wasn’t worth the bloat and tubbiness, you might never over indulge like that again. So do remember the good social parts of it, and the deliciousness, with nostalgia!

Catz Some people can look so great carrying extra pounds and stones! Especially when they are toned! But Oh dear, I was never one of them. I look like a potato, or like a sack of potatoes. Even when I was fittest. 🙁

Good luck everyone, over the Spring break! Or Autumn, if you are on my side of the world 🙂

    Hello!

Husband is home but very tired. I let him sleep in but then dragged him out to do a little Easter basket fillers and grocery shopping. After all, stuff had to be done and I wanted his company after not seeing him for 2 weeks! He’s off with the boy at his night time baseball game now. I will not miss sitting on those freezing benches at night watching those games over the last few weeks…I’m ok for the Saturday day time ones…much warmer!

Spreckles, you’re so funny! Here’s hoping the Easter Bunny hides some eggs and a nice basket of goodies for you! 😉 You must indulge us with the details of which luscious little treats you partake in at high tea! Is it just the ladies in the family that go or the gents too? Again, sounds like so much fun!

K-lo, yes, I’ve had chip dips made with greek yogurt and they’re just as good as sour cream based ones.

Lori, as I always say, easy on, easy off with the weight. It’s when we let our indulgences sit and marinade for a while (keep eating crap!) that it seems to stick. You’re back to your healthy eating habits and the tubbiness should be gone in no time!

Carolina, so sorry the exact number you were wanting didn’t show up, but I’m sure it will any day now. My excitement over bridging into the 121’s was tempered today when my weight snuck back up to 122.4, but like you said, we have natural fluctuations and it will get where we want it to be soon enough! I know what you mean about worrying about blowing it over Spring break…for me there’s Easter of course and then we are going camping in our motorhome for three days. You know how that goes…sitting around the campfire with munchies, s’mores, glasses of wine! Good to hear your daughter doesn’t want to grow up too fast. One of my twins wants to grow up as quick as possible and hangs on everything my 15 year old does. The other twin, who ironically is just starting to “develop” is more immature and would be content being little forever! My 10 year old son jumps back and forth.

Cinque, here’s hoping your daughter and son-in-law find the housing they’re looking for soon! You posted pics of your granddaughter on Facebook? I’d love to see them. How do I connect with you? I’m a terrible “Facebooker” as Lori probably knows! I created an account and posted a picture of me once last Fall when everyone was on that bandwagon and haven’t done a thing with it since! 🙁
Does your granddaughter have any understanding of the Easter Bunny yet at such a young age? Is your daughter making up a basket for her or do you do an egg hunt? We will be hosting my 30+ family members for lunch and an egg hunt as usual. I just get yummy Mexican style roasted chicken, tortillas, beans, rice, guacamole, and salad from a local place and everyone brings an appetizer or dessert to keep it low key and simple.

Ok, off to the local art supplies shop to buy my 15 year old colored pencils, paints, and canvases for her basket. She’s quite a good artist-very creative.

    Good night and sleep tight!

    Good Morning!

I slept in till a bit after 6 this morning, after being awakened by the cat at 3. She wanted out and went right to the door at least. I didn’t really get back to sleep very well, just in and out.

I enjoyed playing golf yesterday and got lots of good exercise. I was quite pleased with how I played for the first time out this season. It was so windy and started to get chilly toward the end of our round. Hoping the wind isn’t quite so bad today. I may have to forego the last couple holes as I have to be home to get ready to go to our Grandson’s birthday party at 4.

I stayed true to my eating plan yesterday. I was afraid I would be hungry all day and wanting to snack, but I didn’t even eat the almonds that I took along golfing. I had eggs before I went to the course and then a small hamburger(no bun) when I got home. For dinner, I had a mexican salad that was yummy….no rice or beans! Just lots of veggies and a healthy spoonful of guacamole.

Tonight for the birthday party, we’re going to a restaurant called “The Texas Roadhouse”. I like to get grilled shrimp and maybe a small piece of steak with a salad…yum!

    Have a lovely day everyone!

    Easter Sunday morning,
Up at 4am with a wideawake girl for an hour before her parents took over. I slept since then but I still feel especially tired. (She did go back to sleep too).
They’ve gone out for breakfast with friends so I can take it easy, but hopefully still get some things done!

It is Fast Day for me. Cruising.
(I’ve hidden some chocolate eggs at adult height for daughter and maybe SIL if there is not too much dairy in them. My daughter and her mum friends are organising a kids egg hunt later. But gd is 18 months old, no idea! Except we do play a ‘hiding things’ game, so she will get the hunt.)
Easter baskets are not a thing here (yet). Are they a bit like Christmas stockings only baskets instead, and including lots of Easter chocolate?

Sherry I hope your family day goes really well, it sounds wonderful!
Here is the link to my fb. Ask me to friend you so you can see granddaughter photos! https://www.facebook.com/joy.stevenson1

Lori, excellent golf news! And don’t you snap back to your eating plan beautifully! I hope you had great fun at Mr 4 year old’s birthday! Such a wonderful age!

Now I am off to a) stir my compost bin, b) put the bread up for its second rise c) henna my hair d) watch tv til the others get back!

Sorry for the confusion, party was at 4 o’clock, grandson is 12 years old.

Golf was fun today, but didn’t play as well as yesterday. Back at it tomorrow.

Had a yummy dinner tonight. Steak and shrimp with salad.

    Enjoy your Sunday!

    Hello!

Sherry, I’m amazed you’re hosting a big crowd right after your husband returns!! Wow. We’ll have a basket for my daughter here in the morning and she is helping hide eggs for the younger ones at our church, assuming we actually make it. Then we’ll head to the inlaws.

Cinque, can’t believe it’s already Easter there!!!! I remember those toddler egg hunts….so precious. It is kind of magical poking around for brightly colored eggs…

Lori, glad you got to sleep in. I had a horrible night but that hasn’t happened in a while, thank goodness.

Salma, I made the lentils and rice tonight and it was very good! My daughter even ate it and she can be wary of some new foods. I had to get the onion out of hers, haha. It is similar in many ways to a traditional Southern dish called Hoppin’ John, which is rice with black eyed peas. Traditionally it’s made with onion and fat back, but I use olive oil. And it can be hot with red or black pepper. (It’s one of the New Year’s Day foods, along with collard greens, but I use spinach!!) I like it but black eyed peas are really hard to digest so I’m glad to learn about this!! It will be good when my vegetarian son is home in May….

So we decided to go to Pittsburgh to see him Tuesday through Thursday. We’re going to try to do some fun things, like New River Gorge and Falling Water on the way and there is an incline up Mt. Washington in the city. My daughter seems excited. We went on a cruise last year for spring break, so that’s kind of hard to top but we did tell her we’ll either go out West or to the Netherlands this summer so she’s happy….Although, she had some girl drama at school this week! I don’t think she is at fault but I am glad spring break has come!!!!!

Oh dear Lori, you were perfectly clear that 4 was the time, but sad to say I have the brain of a gnat. And at the moment it is a worn out gnat. I hope you had a lovely birthday celebration at 4 pm with mister 3 times that!
Lots of good golf wishes! Glad your belly is feeling happier!

I have just been copying recipes I’d like to try, out of that lovely Lebanese book I was telling you all about http://www.amazon.com/Whispers-Lebanese-Kitchen-Familys-Treasured/dp/1741968224 But I think it will be a while before I get to try them. However I am making the kuftah again this week at my daughters request! 🙂

I have made Hopping John, Catz! Also with olive oil (in my vegetarian years). I had some lovely chili sauce that set it off beautifully. I am a great one for legumes! Luckily the black-eyed peas digest fine in me! (Legumes! The more you eat, the more you can eat!)

It is the end of the day. A good fast day. So full after a wonderful bowl of miso soup with some left over pork meat in it. Very tasty. Greens from my garden as well.
The bread is cooked, it looks a good loaf. The compost is stirred, it is looking good too! And my hair is hennaed, and yes! It is looking pretty good too, although it is time I took it to my hairdressers for a bit of snip snip.

I’m feeling better than I did at the start of the day!
Happy Easter Sunday for those of you for whom it is the start of the day!
I’m going to have a cosy evening and early bed! Bye!

    Good Morning!

Another chilly start to our day and I’ll be bundling up to go to the golf course. I think we are a bit daft to be out there in this cold weather, although it does get pretty nice by the time we reach the turn. I had 3 layers on yesterday, which makes it a little hard to swing the club. 😉

DH is picking up a friend at the airport this morning while I head for the golf course. We’ll meet up sometime this afternoon! LOL! I may even make dinner for him tonight! I’m having a little trouble getting out of vacation mode. Reality will smack me in the face tomorrow when I return to boot camp AND work. Sigh…

    Have a lovely day!

    Happy Easter everyone!
I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to read posts … Will catch up with you all soon though:)
Today is a sunny bright day and we had a gorgeous morning with the kids.
Hope you are all well and happy.
Thank you again for all the great words of encouragement ladies. I am thankful. I’m ready to climb back on the horse and fast twice this week. Will fit well with all the chocolate that’s going around! My Mom bakes so much and I have a very hard time resisting it all!!

    Happy Easter everyone..
No way am I going to be FDing over the mini holiday in Istanbul. It’s been one long feast. I will try to have 3 FDs Tuesday to Thursday to atone for my sins net week, but for now, eat, drink and be merry! I am spending a great time in Istanbul.. What a great city.. With my sister. We sit walk around, window shop, drink tea and gossip. All great fun. Alas, I have to go back tomorrow, but not before I visit a Hammam (Turkish bath), where I am scheduled for a Turkish Bath and a massage. Two hours later, I will emerge to have my hair done and prepare for the airport. Life is good!!

CC. I am glad you liked the lentils and rice dish.. I would love to have your bean and rice one. Did you find the cumin &/or cinnamon taste overpowering? I am happy to provide more recipes for Lebansese dishes if you let me know what ingredients you like.

Lori.. It’s nice that you got back onto the gold course. I know how much you enjoy that.

We have Monday off for Easter.. We actually have 2 Easters: The Western Easter and the Eastern Orthodox Easter next month. We have 18 different denominations in Lebanon, so plenty of religious holidays. I am not complaining! Back to work on Tuesday.. I am certainly not looking forward to that either, Lori.

Have a great chocolatey day ladies.. Tomorrow is another dat.

    Salma

    Hi All,

Just a quick post to wish you all a wonderful Easter (belatedly for those on the other side of the globe!). The sneaky Easter Bunny hid baskets for all the kids as usual with notes left that had rhyming clues as to where to find them (yes, Cinque, like stockings for Christmas here). Seriously the clues were the easiest yet since mom (whoops, the Easter Bunny!) was very tired/bleary eyed at 12 in the morning while writing them! All are happy and eating their breakfasts with a side of chocolate eggs!

Cinque, hope your granddaughter found lots of Easter eggs on the hunt. Did you all take lots of precious pictures of the event? What type of yummy bread did you make?

Yes, Carolina, the fun/work never ends around here. I have a large extended family and one of the larger houses so it seems holidays generally end up happening around here (for better or worse!). It’s ok though since we’re ordering food. I just have to get my rear in gear and make my carrot cake cupcakes and maybe a lemon pie. So sorry for the girl drama. With 3 girls of my own, I’ve seen plenty of it and when they start hitting the 10-12 age range, the “mean girl” stuff seems to start. Not fun! Let me know if you want any help with that!

Lori, hope it starts warming up by you soon! Sounds so cold! Great you had the wonderful dinner and grandson’s bday! What a fun week!

Hi Briar Rose, looking forward to hearing more from you in the near future!

Salma, yes, no way should you being fasting during your little vacation! Enjoy! Your time with your sister sounds wonderful! I think I told you I visited a Hammam in Kushadasi while on a cruise. Very interesting experience for us Westerners!

Talk to you all next week! 🙂

    Sherry

    Good morning everyone!

Lori, I thought golfers were mad by definition! I hope it is a lovely day to be outdoors.

Salma enjoy your Istanbul feast days, and your time with your sister. Just the break you need!

Sherry your Easter sounds wonderful! I love the rhyme to find the baskets!

We are taking it a bit slowly for the granddaughter. Since she really has no expectations this year, my daughter is waiting until the others in her mums group can all get together and have a little egg hunt with all the kids.
So I hid the chocolates up high and in places only my daughter would find them, in memory of all the hunts that happened when she was growing up. I’d hide the little eggs all around the house, and we would still be finding the occasional one weeks later.
That might happen this year too!

Briar Rose, so good to see your post here! I bet you have been busy with interesting things! And how lovely to have a baking mum.
Has it been impossible fitting regular fasts in your weeks? It will feel lovely to be able to do a couple now. Good luck with them.

Sending cheers and all good things, for a lovely night, or day!
