Good morning everyone, I started the day early picking the girls up, they were a bit late so it was a race to get to the first house inspection, and then the next, and the next and the next two…. But we did it and now we are home and I am writing from the couch while Josie watches tellytubbies.
I came up with twinklebud years ago, Catz, as a protest against whoever said ‘blastocyst’ – I mean, really!
Salma, thanks so much for that recipe, my daughter is drooling over it too! We will probably go half lamb, half mince because lamb is so expensive here at the moment. We’ll do the one with tomato and potato on top.
We will make it tomorrow so she can help me eat it. A great start to Lebanese week.
I’m very interrupted here!
But Speckles, scales can drive you up the wall, there is no rhyme or reason to them sometimes! Just keep going, the scales will catch up with you eventually!
I was 30 kg overweight, but l stopped eating sugar about 6 years ago and lost 20kg and then plateaued. So 5:2 is finishing off the last 10kg, and I’m more than half way through that 10 kg. hooray.
Salma congrats on this good fasting period, you are getting back to good numbers. Don’t be hard on yourself, you’ve had difficulty after difficulty. Let’s hope you get a good run now, and a good strategy in place for the next Christmas, or high stress time. You will feel wonderful if you avoid a yo yo this year.
Catz you’re heading steadily down too. Wasn’t Christmas a big interruption to 5:2 for everyone ( except me! I managed to avoid it!) .
Wow for your husbands experience! Hooray for home made lunches!
MM I hope it is a positive meeting with the provost. Or was. Sending good wishes.
It is a very nice temperature here now, and will be for days. Still strangely humid, but at least it has been raining.
Best wishes all the wonderful women here! πΊπΏπΊπΏπΊ

Yep, so all over the place, Sherry’s post was there but I only just read it now. I hope you had a lovely birthday dinner for your nephew and niece!
And yay for arriving home lighter than when you left!
It is lovely to have you back with us!
Well, my daughter got so hungry for that kuftah that we made it tonight, and it was a great success! We had it with a big salad and a bit of Turkish bread (daughters choice).
Salma, I figured when you said cut the potato into 2cm slices you meant 2mm? Or to slice them thinner after parboiling? Which we did.
I had to scavenge every bit of parsley from the garden (4 plants but struggling after the heatwave) and added a bit of basil to make up the amount. I just loved the herb onion mixture!
I did have nutmeg and cinnamon, but I think I need to add more next time!
Such a good meal! I feel beautifully replete and the memory will make my fast day tomorrow even lovelier.
And there are left overs!
Good Morning my friends!
I’m quite enjoying a leisurely Saturday morning, although I did decide to go ahead and do my laundry. Tomorrow I’ll strip the bed and do that laundry. So much fun to be had on the weekend! π I have a couple of errands to do later, but it is only 8:30AM…the whole day stretches ahead of me.
I haven’t heard from DH this morning. He called yesterday and he and his friend were having a great time at the museum in Washington DC. He’ll be home sometime this afternoon. Hmm…guess I should figure out what to make for dinner. I’m in vacation mode and don’t even want to think about it! We leave on Thursday morning and I’m SO ready.
I really thought maybe some of my friends would call about playing golf today, but I guess it is a bit early in the season. I would have gone, but I really do have things to do around here. It was quite cold this morning, but now the sun is out and it is looking beautiful.
I’m starting to panic a bit about the possibility of gaining weight while on vacation for a week. I’ve been making decent progress and really don’t want to come home with 5 or 6 pounds to lose again. I will really try to stick to my low carb plan, but I know I’ll be doing more drinking than usual and a dessert or 5 will probably pass my lips. Maybe if I share with DH, I can limit the damage? I want to have a good time and not obsess, but ACK!!!!
Enjoy your weekend lovelies!
Hello……we had work company over to grill out last night and I was doing well until everyone left and I was cleaning up the kitchen and got a craving for more guac and chips….somehow that led to more ice cream. It’s such a slippery slope!!!! Ayk! But my husband is working today so some of the weekend temptations won’t be around.
Sherry, how nice to have connections to Hawaii!!! We have a business here in NC and have thought about a European satellite, probably in the Netherlands, but now we have a distributor there instead. He was one of the guests last night, in fact. We are tentatively thinking about going to the Netherlands for vacation this summer with our 12 yo daughter — my husband knows the area well and can get by in Dutch even though there’s no need. Our daughter has only been to Canada and the Bahamas so she thinks she’s been ripped off on international travel, haha. We LOVE Canada but it has so much in common with our culture. I guess Europe does too. We should go to Lebanon!!!
Cinque, congrats on giving up sugar. I wish I could do that. I have reduced it dramatically. I worry more about my daughter who has a wicked sweet tooth! It’s puzzling because my son doesn’t really….
Salma, I’d like the lentil recipe! My son is vegetarian and it’s good to have extra recipes when he’s home.
Lori, I found that doing a fast on traveling days worked pretty well–then you can just be a little mindful once you get there. Just don’t go off the rails like I did last night.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Ok, it worked so here we go again! I’m solo parenting again. Hubby had to leave for business in Hawaii. Awful since we only had a week home together but due to scheduling conflicts next month, he had to go this month, just a week after I returned from there.
Dinner out for the birthday party was awful but at least that meant little damage done to the diet- I’m down 0.2 this morn! π
I love the name “Twinklebud” Cinque! Reminds me of the story of Thumbelina emerging from the flower bud! πΉ what’s the status of your daughter finding a place by you?
Lori, where were you off to again? Was it the Bahamas? I know it’s scary to go on vacation after losing a bunch of weight and being fearful of gaining! For what it’s worth I attribute my success while in Hawaii to walking or hiking an hour each in the morning and evening whenever possible, tried to eat just twice a day, late breakfast & dinner, and limit myself to one glass of alcohol nightly when my friend came into town ( none the week prior). And of course there’s that old rule of thumb, dessert or alcohol, but not both in one meal ( or mayb you could do 1/2 glass alcohol & share dessert w/hubby.π)? In the end, it’s only one week, so try to enjoy yourself- if you do gain a little, you can take it off quickly.
Mujadara recipe sounds wonderful, Salma! I’ll have to try it soon!
Carolina, had to laugh about your daughter! My kids are very travel spoiled and don’trealize how lucky they are! I only travelled out of California as a child to go to Las Vegas & Lake Tahoe, Nevada! Basically my hubby & I love to travel and have never really had good babysitters to leave them with for an extended period so we’ve always had them along. I do believe that travel provides an invaluable experience for them to be exposed to different cultures/ways of life- a great learning experience! What business are you in btw?
MM , how did things go with regard to your meeting? I hope ok!
Ok off to a kiddy movie , Zootopia, with the children!
Sherry
Good morning,
It is Monday here, but a pubic holiday. Moomba festival! Not that I am going anywhere except taking the girls to the airport. I am very tired. Reminds me how sick I was when Rose was little. I need to hunker down as there is still a long run until I will have the space to let my health improve.
But nothing to stop me from keeping on fasting!
Salma, no idea how those days add up, but they do sound lovely days. I do need to keep fast days going til the end, simplicity!
Mine was yesterday.
Mujjadara is one I have made several times! I love how the onions set it off!
O dear I am so tired, I am going to stop writing and go back to lying down. I did read everyone’s post. Sending good wishes.
Had a nap, and the girls have gone for a coffee. Oh dear I just ran out of puff. The worst thing about my illness is that once I’ve been overdoing it, which I had to, I keep going down hill for a while. So I will be taking it down as many notches as I can!
One thing I will do is not go to my next board meeting (secretary of local community organisation) but I need to write up something, and I will be sending you best wishes writing up yours Salama, about 100 times more important and involved than mine no doubt!
How excellent that your massage contraption felt great! I tend to put all my tension into my shoulders too.
Sherry all power to you in your solo parenting. Loved your philosophical response to an awful dinner out.
Lori I hope your whole weekend was an expanse of wonderfulness. Count down on to holidays!
Moomba grew out of our Labour day marches (8 hours working day etc) got fancied up after a visit from the Queen in the 50’s to be a community festival. ‘Moomba’ was chosen because they were told it is a local Aboriginal word for “Let’s get together and have fun” but the story is it is a local Aboriginal word for ‘up your bottom’, or ‘bum’ as we call it. So it is a good joke. Lots of things happening by our dear Yarra river in the city.
π
Hi all
Cinque, you do sound weary, hope you can rest up a bit now and mend. Sherry, hard work going solo after the restful holiday, guess that’s how it goes with your business, have to do whatever comes along. Lori, happy hols.
We had a busy couple of days and am quite glad to get to today for a food rest! Going to try saving eating to dinner of soup later, not sure how it will go but do find my appetite wakes up when I eat so hoping to manage on coffee and water. I do have an orange available if I get desperate.
Am still researching higher fat diet and do like eating that way, trying not to think about what I can’t have .
Also researching Spanish lessons, not sure whether to sign up for a longer class, personal Skype sessions or try a set of cd based lessons. I have enjoyed the little taster classes so far but only have two more. I only want conversational Spanish not to do exams etc.
Salma, your recipes sound delish, we tried a new Lebanese place in town last week, shared some houmous and falafel then I had a lovely chopped chicken salad with lots of fresh herbs in it, then a little Lebanese coffee.
Hello to the others, I also wonder how the visit to the provost went?
Susie
Good Morning!
I had a very low key weekend. I have finished my packing for our Florida trip except for a few last minute items. Now to hope that my luggage is not overweight…don’t want to pay that additional fee! π
Cinque…I sure hope you’re feeling better. That overwhelming tiredness must be awful. Just take care of you….lots of good rest this week, do you hear? (((Hugs)))
The scale continues to march down. Sometimes a pound at a time!! I need to give the next few days my best effort as a week in Florida will not do my waist line any good. I’m hoping to stick to lots of broiled seafood and fresh salads. I have already warned husband that I may “force” him to get a dessert now and then so that I can have a single forkful! π
My normal Monday fast today. I only managed one fast day last week, but had my best weight loss week in a long time. Hmmm…….
Off to boot camp in a few minutes. 3 days this week….gotta do it!
Sherry…hope you have a good week with the kids. I know you’ll be running from one thing to the next. You always seem to handle it with ease!
Time to get this day started. Make it a good one!
Hi Gals, Firstly thank you all for your advice and support. I had a better last couple of days, in general because I was not so stressed at work. I love my job but it is very stressful at times and I get overwhelmed.
Fasted today which was fine and just had a chicken salad and an apple for dinner. The thing I miss most on FDs is milk in my coffee. I usually just have instant or percolated as I don’t like “milky” coffee like a latte or cappuccino and I don’t mind black coffee. Only I get a belly ache after too much black coffee and lots of water.
Yesterday was stepdads birthday and trying to avoid “afternoon tea” I suggested I take them down to the beach and get fish and chips. I don’t eat fish so that suited me and I just took a salad and had a few chips. Being early Autumn it was a glorious evening and I even got to have a swim at their home before we headed out for an early dinner. So that served several purposes and all went well.
I wish our names had which countries everyone is from, that would make it easier. I’ve no worked out that Salma is from Lebanon or that area, because of the recipes and A few I have picked as from the USA, Cinque is Melbourne. Still working out the rest.
I am very cunningly avoiding the supermarket at the moment. I don’t want to be tempted with Easter Eggs or worse Hot Cross Buns. For anyone who isn’t familiar with Hot cross Buns they are the best thing to eat over Easter. They are a spicy bun with fruit in it ( also now available with choc chips but I like traditional) and best served warm so it has a slightly crispy top and it will have a cross piped onto the top – hence the name. These are traditionally eaten on Good Friday to symbolise Jesus and the Cross (then the Eggs for rebirth) and are SOOO good with butter and marmalade.
The first thing you can see and smell as you walk into a supermarket is these freshly baking, so better for me to stay away and just go to the fruit and vegie shop. – I may allow myself 1 on Good Friday depending on how I am going. It is that carrot dangling.
In Sydney here we have had over a month of high temps 32C-35C but it has been a dry heat that I can cope with but tonight and it is now past midnight I am dripping in sweat from the humidity. Off for a shower before I hit the sack. Cheers
Hi everyone,
Just a quick pop in before my day gets too crazy! Dropped the kids at school and got my walk in. Now I have to throw something on the crockpot for dinner and head back to the school to pick up my daughter for her quarterly diabetes check up. Afterwards, back to school to pick up the other 3, homework, dinner, and then take son to baseball practice. Lori, I’m glad I make it look easy, but it’s exhausting! π
Cinque, hope you had a good & RESTFUL Moomba day!
Hi Susie, food to see you pop in! Re: high fat eating, look at Dr. Mercola’s website- he advocates eating higher fat like nuts/seeds, avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, etc. I tend to eat that way and feel it definitely fills you up more & improves hair & skin!
More weight lost Lori? Bravo! What’s the total lost tally since you began eating low carb earlier this year? So you’re going to Florida? Where in FL? I have sisters- in- laws in Miami & Del Ray Beach. Have a wonderful time! π΄βοΈ
Hi Spreckles! You started on when I was in Hawaii I think, but you’ve probably already figured out I’m a U.S. (California) girl! Yes, we almost need a spreadsheet wIth everyone’s info to keep track! Those buns sound heavenly! Yes, I think the strategy of avoiding the markets where they’re sold for the time vie via a good one! You’re hit & humid there & we’re cold & rainyi in Southern California!
Have a wonderful start to the week ladies! π
Sherry
Ha Sherry, the way these words come out! I called Salma ‘Salama’ in my last post. Sorry Salma!
It is morning here. Thanks everyone for your kind words. I did have a restful Moomba day, and I have an easy morning and then a lovely meeting today.
I hope you find your best way to learn Spanish, Susie. I began trying to learn Italian, but then life got too busy.
Good luck sorting out your coffee too. I decided that since I need to have milk in it, I just let milk for cuppas be part of fast day calories. And it is enough ( unusually) to last me through til my evening soup
Speckles I hope work stays less stressful! What a great idea to get down to the beach for your stepdads birthday.
We each have the opportunity to write a profile, and I love it when I click on someone’s name and can find a bit of info about who they are and where they live. It is very useful as I get to know people.
For a bit of help resisting hot cross buns, there has been a post going around of a container of yellow liquid labelled ‘bun spice’ with a big horrible list of chemicals as the ingredients, all set to be used in hot cross buns. I bet it is what they spray around too, to make the shop smell of spices.
Lori you are so set to have the best holiday!
ππ·ππ·π
Good Morning!
Another tough boot camp workout is in the books. One more until I get a bit of a break.
I intended to fast for 22 hours yesterday, but only made it to 20. I just wasn’t feeling “right”, so I ate a handful of almonds around 2 that got me thru till dinner. I had a low carb dinner, but just too much volume and I didn’t feel well all evening. Still felt awful when I went to bed, but was ok this morning. Lesson learned…….portion control!!! I think this is especially true if you haven’t eaten for 20+ hours.
Another rainy, dreary day here. Sure makes it hard to have much pep in your step! A nap sounds better than being active. π I’m hoping to see plenty of sun from Thursday on, so I’ll bide my time.
Have a good day everyone!
Good morning ladies!
Just dropped kids off and then on to bible study and afterwards pilates. Then on to the grocery store and it should then be about time to pick up the kids. There goes the day- poof!
I’m tired today- we live somewhat near a military base and for some reason, they thought last night at 11:00 pm on was a good time to test bombs. They do this occasionally but why that late for God’s sake!? This plus still getting used to the change over of losing one hour with daylight savings time starting this past weekend is killing me! Anyhow, though I don’t usually do it, I snuck a half teaspoon of instant coffee in my cocoa this morning to help me get by ( I know you coffee drinkers are snickering at me right now!π
Yesterday’s doctor appointment for my daughter went well. For those of you who are unfamiliar, a 3 month average of blood sugar levels, known as A1c, for my daughter was 6.6, and anything under 7 is awesome . So, needless to say she and I were quite happy!
Lori, 13 down! SO AWESOME! Did you have to buy a lot of new, smaller clothes for your trip ( if so, aw darn! π)?
Cinque, glad to hear you holiday was restful & hoping you’ve recuperated from your over exertion. π
I’m down to teetering between 122.8 and -123.0. It feels wonderful and effortless right now- like a way of life. I hope it sticks – I don’t ever want to go backward again ! It gets harder and harder for me each time iI’ve tried to lose weight the older I’ve gotten. I’m hoping for and looking forward to a life not consumed by my weight and what I’m eating- how freeing would that be. What will I do with all that extra time? With my life, I’m sure it will get filled up rather quickly! π I too want to learn new languages -I have two Rosetta Stone language course boxes staring at me on my counter: Spanish & French. I have a decent grasp of Spanish vocalb but not the tenses and know very little French. I want to be more fluent in Spanish before I go to Spain this summer and learn French so they’re (hopefully) not mean to me in Paris ( as I experienced in the past- nice to us in the countryside, but not so much in Paris!).
Ok, better get off to starting the day! Adios and bon jour.
Sherry
Hi all
Sherry, thanks for that suggestion, will have a look at Dr Mercola. One thing you or Lori might be able to help me with, when I have a fast day like yesterday or low carb day, I wake in the night with pains in my hips and legs, like ‘bone pain’ is the only way I can describe it- any ideas? I added in a salty drink yesterday, thought that might help but it didn’t tho I did enjoy it. Also having more heartburn.
Otherwise am enjoying the veggies and the fats, and trying not to think about Easter on the horizon! I read in a What the fat blog post that they suggest 3/21 cheat / treat meals per week, don’t think that is a great idea really but am not going to stress if the odd bit of chocolate passes my lips!
Lori, you are doing so well! Enjoy the holiday, up your game again when you get back. Have you thought how you are going to amuse yourself when life is one long holiday in October?
Happy Tuesday! Susie
Hello everyone,
Salma I am so sorry to hear your news. I can hear the shock of it, of what it might do to your lives. I do know that Altzheimers can be very variable in how quickly it progresses and in what effect it has. I do hope that the diagnosis gives you all a useful base for working out what you can do to manage the future. I hope that your city has good structures in place to support, and I so hope that it isn’t too much on you.
ππΈππΈπ
Lori, what if you go on your vacation, and spend all your time missing boot camp!π³
I hope today is a good one, after that not so good one.
Sherry, what a great result for your daughter. I’m presuming that is thanks to excellent management? Congratulations.
Hooray for settling in at your new weight. It is a life changer. How long is it since you began 5:2? Cheers to you!
I did chuckle just a little about your coffee since I amsoon going to make a pot with a heaped tablespoon. πβοΈ Mmm yum, I so wanted one yesterday evening, but knew I had to wait til the morning.
It does take me more than a good rest day to recover, I’m afraid, and the meeting yesterday involved a tour of a huge industrial place, with stairs. I couldn’t bring myself to refuse ( it is the place and the partners we may be able to start the YamDaisy Cafe with/at) so that was a minus. But worth it I think. Sigh. But I’m going to manage today and it involves home help coming to clean, thank heavens, and then my sisters visiting and they will look after me.
Susie my hips are aching at night too. Bone pain! Much worse than when I was overweight. I’ve been wondering why.
I like that occassional treat idea. Very sensible.
Best wishes to everyone for a good day.
Good morning all,
Salma, I am so sorry to hear about your mum. Dementia is a bitch if you will excuse my French. In my early working life I was a nurse and worked in a care facility that specialised in Alzheimer and dementia patients. What I will say to you is that in general it is worse for the family than it is for the patient and as the disease progresses you will have a grieving process to go through, so allow yourself that. Just make some special memories while you can.
Suzie and Cinque, with the bone pain at night, have either of you tried glucosamine and or fish oil? I take both and without it I would struggle to just move in bed. It doesn’t cure it but it manages the pain so I get a decent nights sleep once I settle. I have tried a lot of brands and the only ones that seem to be worth spending the money on are the good brands from the health food shop.
I’ve had better results this week. Released .8Kg when I got on the scales yesterday then the same again today. I don’t expect that 2nd loss will hold just yet but I can see it flirting with me on the scales and that is encouraging. I did realise that I have been eating no carbs or very little since I started this. The occasional potatoes and the very occasional chocolate but that is all.
You must be so pleased Sherry with your daughters results, that is a great hurdle to overcome and if she can learn all this when she is young you are giving her the basis for a lifetime of good health. Congratulations Mum!
I bought the Fast diet cookbook to get some recipes for every day cooking but not really impressed. They are high maintenance recipes with 15 herbs and spices, vegetables that we don’t get in Oz but most of the recipes I liked that look of required long time frames of preparation and cooking. I wish someone would come out with a no seafood cookbook with simple and quick recipes.
Lori, I too have problems with volume. On a fast day I don’t eat at all till dinner time and usually a salad (summer here) that is easy with maybe a bit of chicken poached in tomatoes to give it a bit of flavour. I find a salad hard to make for 1 person as I want to add too many vegies and end up with a really big bowl. I eat most of it knowing that it is mainly water vegies but pay for it a couple of hours later with stomach pains. In typing this I have realised I will need to limit the number of vegies I put in a salad and maybe just highlight one in particular.
We finally have our rain here and I have the day off so am going to enjoy it catching up with things around the house.
Cheers
Hi all,
I’m popping in again as I’m stuck doing weeknight duty at son’s baseball game. Usually the hubby does the weeknight ones so I can be home & getting dinner cleaned up & girls to bed/ but no hubby this week so I’m here freezing my arse off!
Susie, the suggestions given by Spreckles were good & I use them. Also to try: Zyflamed for inflammation & magnesium to relax your body & help you sleep. I still have joint (SI/ piriformis pain at night off & on but the above helps plus a chiropractic adjustment now & again. If pain is really bad, I use Traumeel T Relief gel & slap a Salon Pas pain patch on the spot. Hope that helps!
Spreckles thanks , yes , it was very difficult when my daughter was diagnosed last year at just 8 yrs old, but we’re learning to live with it as best we can. We are hopeful because there is so much research going on & docs feel there will be a cure in her lifetime. Re: the recipes, there’s a plethora of healthy easy recipes on the Internet! I love Slender Kitchen, Jane’s Healthy Kitchen, Cooking Light, etc. Good luck!
Salam, my heart goes out to you. I can provide you with lots of resources & suggestions being that caring for the elderly, including those with dementia is what we specialize in. I will get back to you this week on that. Of course, in the U.S. The Alzheimer’s Assocuation is the major resource. The best tip I can give you now is that as it progresses, try not to argue with her as to what her version of reality is – play along/ agree to a certain degree because many times they can’t be convinced otherwise and it just makes them more angry/confused.
Cinque, that must have been very difficult for you to go to that meeting and do all that walking when you haven’t even fully recovered from being exhausted! I’m so proud of you though that you soldiered through! Hoping it was productive and moved you forward with Yamdaisy! Were you looking at locations for the restaurant?
Ok, I can’t type on my phone anymore & as usual, please excuse typos! Good night!
Speckles, I have fish oil capsules sitting in the cupboard that I have been forgetting to take! Back onto it!
Love seeing you work out things as you write!
Salma, you have SO much on your plate, no wonder you are snacking. Especially if you haven’t been sleeping well, there is new research showing how it makes you hungrier for munchies.
I think you are doing exactly the right thing by doggedly getting through your fast days, and then each day is a new day to try to have less snacks if possible. Maybe your massages, and pilates if you do it, and other things you can do to nurture yourself, will make a big difference.
I wish I lived near, and could help by bringing food (A good tray of kuftah!) (and a big pot of beautiful soup!).
My sister has just arrived, so I must go. Sending all the best wishes, bye for now.
Bye Sherry!
Hi all
Salma, sorry to hear about your Mum, I hope you can find support from health professionals in the field and access appropriate care as you need it. I had my Mother assessed and she had vascular dementia, likely linked to her lifetime diabetes. I agree with the advice to agree when you can with what they say, easier than trying to correct all the time, tho sometimes I could not help myself.
Speckles thanks for the advice, I used to take magnesium for sleep, now I don’t take anything but might try the glucosamine idea as I am also stiff in ankles early morning so it might help with that also.
Great your daughters bloods are stable Sherry, makes it worth all the effort you put in. Great job on keeping to the new low weight, you have to look after yourself too with such a busy life. I have considered Rosetta Stone courses, have you tried them yet? I have also had Michel Thomas and Paul Noble recommended and am still pondering between one of those or a class. Would be interested what you think of the Stone course.
Off to class today then going for mini tapas lunch, some are away next week for the final one so the farewell lunch is today. Green beans and eggs for bf, I know sounds weird but I like it!
Cinque, rest up, good you made it around the space for a viewing , nice your sister will give you a hand sometimes.
Susie
Good Morning!
Just holding my own with the weight this week. Up a few tenths the past 2 days, I’ve been eating too much cheese and just too much in general. Not sure what is up with that. Leaving tomorrow for a week’s vacation, so hope I can hold things in check. At least I won’t have my own kitchen to graze in for a week!
Salma..sorry about your Mom. I know it’s hard. I’ve been there and done that. It is hard to see, but you just do the best you can and soldier on. I’ve read some studies about coconut oil being effective in treating dementia. Maybe you want to do some reading about that? I know it’s hard to change an older person’s diet, especially when dementia kicks in, but I wish you luck in managing it all. Just know you have us here to talk to anytime…let this be your “safe” place to vent and air your frustrations. (((Hugs)))
Cinque…enjoy your time with your sister. Does she live far from you? My sis is 2.5 hrs from me and I often wish she were closer. Once I retire I will see her more, I’m sure.
Sherry…great news about your daughter’s check-up. It shows that you are taking excellent care of her and managing her condition. Great Mom!
The cat had me up at 3:30 this morning, so it’s going to be a long day. I’m ready to set out for boot camp day #3 for the week and the last one for over a week. I have to say that I’m ready for a break. I plan to do a good bit of walking in the next week to try to temper the extra eating and drinking. Off for my first pedicure of the season after work…WOW do I need it! :-O
Take care everyone…hugs to you all!
Good evening all,
As usual it was a busy day for me but at least it was one of body upkeep & maintenance (I need so much of that in my 50’s it seems!). Kid drop off then 1 hour walk, next chiropractor to fix my back I tweaked whilst running through the airport last week in heels ( really? What was I thinking?), then to acupuncturist whom I’d love to see monthly but haven’t seen since November, then back to a different chiropractor at same chiropractic office who works only on the cervical spine (Nucca practitioner). Apparently travel, especially in planes, tends to compress our spines! When this guy first started seeing me he had me stand with one foot on each of two scales and I was so tilted ( neck tilted) to one side, I weighed 4 pounds more on that side! Sounds crazy but it helps me so there you go- the appointments were followed up with grocery shopping & kid pick up & dinner/household chores. I still need to make lunches for tomorrow before showering/bed.
Salma, I’ve heard good things about coconut oil too with regard to helping memory in those with Alzheimer’s. A daughter of a client of ours in Hawaii swore by it- she’d mix a tablespoon into her dad’s coffee each morning & said when she didn’t, there was a marked difference for the worse. This month’s issue of Life Extension magazine (they sell supplements) discusses studies of how pyrroloquinoline (PQQ) has been researched and has been seen to function as a neuroprotecrive agent that can help protect memory & cognition. It also increases the formation of new nerve cells & promotes the growth of new mitochondria ( hmmm, maybe I need some!). Something to look into- !
Also, can see how getting this news can send you down the rocky road of eating badly! It’s not easy! You’re right though, you’ve got enough to deal with now without having your weight to burden you too. During tough times in my life, I’ve sometimes weighed my least just because controlling my eating seemed to be the only thing I could control and I didn’t want that literally weighing me down too.
Re: the pilates, I’ve been doing it fairly regularly since Ocrober with the exception of during trips ( until this last trip to Hawaii when I found an instructor). I take private one on one lessons because it’s difficult to get the correct form & breathing down in the beginning without close supervision . So I’d definitely recommend getting private lessons if you can, at least in the beginning. I’m thinking of transitioning one day a week out of two to a group mat class and do one day a week privately using the reformer and Cadillac ( pilates equipment). It is definitely helping my back- even the chiropractor mentioned today that though slightly tweaked, my back seemed much better than before I started doing pilates. And, there definitely is a stretching component to it too, not just strengthening. I’m so wishing you Salam! π & hugs!
Susie (& Lori) thanks for the kudos with regard to my daughter- as parents we just do what we have to, you know? I’m hoping the advice helps, as i said, the magnesium in particular, really helps with the muscle relaxation. Yep, haven’t even opened the darn Rosetta Stone boxes otherwise I’d be happy to tell you how it’s working out! They’re still staring at me on the kitchen counter! π
Cinque, hope you had a nice visit with your sister! Is your energy getting better now?
Bye Lori! Have a wonderful vacation! You deserve it! Can’t wait to hear about all the fun you’ve had when you return! βοΈπ΄
I’m more officially in the 122’s as of today- 122.8 with no teetering back and forth on the scale! 2.8 lbs. to go till I reach my goal of 120. Maybe I’ll push it to 115 to give myself some wiggle room and plus I’d get to hang out here longer with you girls! π
Love ya!
Sherry
Good luck with your fast today. It does get easier once your body gets into the swing of the diet. My hubby and I both have lost 13 & 12 kilos respectively from April last year until now. Most of it we lost last year and we still enjoy going out for meals and entertaining. Today is our fast day and yes I’m a little hungry right now, but I went out for a luncheon yesterday and only had a small snack last night. But I know that dinner is only 5 more hours away so I can stave off the hunger with herbal tea and lots of water until then.
We both find we cannot eat as much as we used to do, our plates are smaller and everything on it is a much smaller serving. We feel fantastic and everyone continually keeps asking if we have lost more weight. We are both 60 this year and it feels great to know that we have done a favour for our health. After eating out yesterday it was really nice to know that today our bodies are getting a well earned rest from food. Good luck again. I’ve gone from a size 16 to a size 10.
Good Morning!
Having a cup of coffee and will hit the shower soon and then it’s time to fly! How rude of the scale to be up a pound this morning!! WHAT?? Who knows…..I’m sure it’ll be up much more till the next time I weigh on 3/25. OY!
Not sure if I’ll post much while I’m away, as it’s a bit tedious on my phone or Kindle. Maybe a line here or there so you all don’t forget about me!
Hugs all around and have a great week!
Hello!!!!
I let some days slip by so I just skimmed everyone’s posts and I know I won’t get to them all. Salma, I am sorry about your mom. It is hard!!! Do what you need to take care of yourself and be gentle with yourself. My parents went through a protracted decline and death 15 years ago when my son was a toddler. My main advice would be to do what you can and accept that there will be many times when that won’t FEEL like enough, but it still counts….don’t know if that makes sense.
My weekend wasn’t terrible but then Monday was Pi Day and we took pies to school and had leftover key lime pie in the fridge…kind of tripped me up but I had a good fast day on Tuesday and I’m hoping to today as well.
March is a very hard month for me. For some reason that switch into spring is very hard for me to start off and then a few years ago I had a very traumatic situation happen in March. I’ll spare you the details or it would take over the whole thread, haha. Anyway, it’s as if the “feel” of the world is a huge trigger. All this to say, I was very depressed Monday and somewhat depressed since then. Monday it was bad enough that I didn’t feel like eating so silver lining there. Since then, though it’s more of a background thing and I tend to comfort eat in that situation. I also don’t feel like walking or whatever even thought hat would be the best thing to do. Anyway, that’s what I’m working with this week. But I’m hoping to get over these hurdles….I’ve very close to making progress again!
I’ll try to be on more regularly!!!
Hi lovely ones!
I had three lovely lovely days with my sisters and then yesterday flew up to Sydney for my last trip! Surely! I’m having my second coffee and then it is pack pack pack. In less than a week we will all be in Melbourne.
Salma I wanted to tell you that all my near relatives that got to 80 years old have had Alzheimer’s. So unless they find a cure in the next 20 years I think I will have to go through it too. I apologised in advance to my daughter and she said my don’t worry mum, I’ll just listen to all the funny things you say, and tell my friends. I really liked her saying that because I Could see that she would just accept that it was the way I was. I know she would be kind to me.
I can see that for you the situation is really difficult because your dad will find it so hard to manage, and what a tricky road it will be to make decisions that are the best for everyone. I hope every one can adjust and get the support they need.
Catz, sending you special good wishes for your difficult March, πThe elephant remembers π·There is new growth π’ The tortoise keeps on going π£ The chicks remind us it is a new year β¨ The Stars remind us how big the universe is π The Earth turns.
Eating has always been a comfort to me, and I am someone else who has found it useful to do other things that comfort me, like a scented bath, or even cooking something special and delicious, which is much better that’s wolfing down junk food.
Let’s hope we all have a day of nurturing comfort, without junk food if possible!
Hello!
Salma, I have an excellent book to refer to you. Our company’s international Alzheimer’s care program was based on the concepts in this book and developed by the book’s authors. The book is “The Best Friends Approach to Dementia Care”: by Virginia Bell, MSW and David Troxel, MPH. It has been a lifesaver to many families dealing with dementia. There’s also a website/resources under the same name. I hope this helps!
Carolina, I hope this month goes by quickly for you without too many bad memories. I get that way also with October/November (horrible events happened during those months) and I feel it when the weather gets cooler/the nights longer so I know what you’re saying. Maybe some deep breathing if you don’t feel like exercising or like Salma said, distract yourself with friends and activities even if you don’t really feel like it initially.
Cinque, did you see more than one sister? How fun! Hope you’re doing well!
Lori, the condo sounds awesome. Are you having beautiful weather? Don’t worry about the eating…you’ll be fine!
Yeah for the end of the week! I get to sleep in a bit tomorrow! π
Happy weekend all!
Fingers crossed for your presentation Salma. Sending the very best wishes from beautiful Sydney. πππΊπΎπβπππ Lots of good luck symbols!
Yay Lori, holiday, holiday. No stress! π
Sherry, yes, more than one sister, four of us! Jan is the oldest of us, an Anglican minister based in the far north west of the state as the vicar of the huge parish of Swan Hill. Andrea is the youngest and is a farmer in the north east of the state. Luckily Naomi lives in Melbourne, just a couple of suburbs from me! We try our best to get together every month or two.
Best wishes all, granddaughter needs her grandma! She’s stopping her mum from making us dinne! Bye
Good Evening fellow 5:2ers
I have just finished off 6 FD’s which is nearly 3 weeks. I have lost about 1.4 kgs and I am rather pleased. I know that it would be nice to lose some more, but the NFD’s are too nice. Isn’t that what the plan is all about?
I was sooo hungry last night. I could’ve eaten a horse and chased the rider. I kept looking at the clock willing the time to pass. Thank God I got to sleep okay. But the morning after a FD, I feel rather virtuous and I didn’t pig out. Maybe tomorrow I will relent.
I would like people to tell me know much exercise they do and how much they think that it contributes to their success.
I would also like to hear from people who are new to this and struggling along like I am.
Hi Jacqui,
Don’t fast days make the non fast days super luscious! I’m eating less on them, but they feel so sumptuous. And I also love the feeling of going to sleep pretty hungry on a fast day, and then waking up feeling great the morning after.
There are a few tricks for fast days, waiting as long as possible before eating, so you can have something more substantial at the end of the day, eating protein and low GI foods that keep you full for longer. Many of us find they get easier as you go. Often now the hunger waves don’t bother me, they come and go and I’m not fussed. But every now and then I still have a difficult fast day, and I try to have some nice soup in the fridge that I can have a bowl of, and still keep within the 500 calories.
I have an illness, ( ME/CFS) that means I am unable to do much exercise – a few yoga stretches, and a little walk on a good day. And 5:2 still works!
Hi everyone else too! We had dinner, little one is asleep. I’m going to miss a fast day, first one since I began 5:2 in July last year. But we are in an almost packed up house and everyone is exhausted and unorganised re food. So I’ll just let it roll, and look forward to my fast day on Thursday. I may be pretty close to a fast, we will see.
Best wishes, good night! πβοΈ
Hi Jacqui, Welcome aboard. I am a newbie as well about 4 weeks in though I have been fasting more days. depends on my work schedule but if I can do 3 a week that suits me as I am not a morning eater. AS Cinque said if you can stave off eating till later in the day it is easier and if you can let go of the carbs it makes it even better. I find I am not hungry till I have carbs , then I am ravenous. So needless to say I have been avoiding them as much as possible. Like Cinque, I have health issues that prevent me from exercising but I have Wii Fit and use that at home. It means I can do as little or as much as I am able each day and some days after getting home from work it is none. That will change as I release more weight I am sure.
Cinque, you are so lucky to have 3 sisters. I have 1 but even though we get along, she makes everything a competition. Small doses only is the best way to have our sistership which is a shame as we have often talked of having a holiday together but I think it would be a minefield best left unchartered.
Lori I am sure you will find a fantastic farmers market near your condo and (guessing here) I think the fruit and veggies should be tropical and luscious. We are ending our summer here and the wonderful fresh produce is either drying up or going through the roof in price and I will soon have to start to plan soups instead of salads for my evening meal.
I have discovered Greek yoghurt recently and while is has more calories than natural yoghurt it has such an interesting taste. My stomach doesn’t like acidic vinegars or dressings so I mix in a bit of the Yoghurt and it smooths it down.
Just saw the time and it is after 1am so I need to get some beauty sleep.
Happy Sunday to you all.
Happy Saturday on my side of the world! Just got back from a walk with the kids and after a shower, will take my son to his baseball game and then the twins out to do something girly…maybe shopping, pedicure?
Salma, you’re welcome. I hope it helps. Hopefully your dad can get on board with some of the ideas in the book to minimize the friction between them. How great that you’re looking into the pilates. I hope the doctor gives you the green light to try it out. I know the private lessons are expensive, but once you get the hang of it, as I said, you can transition into less expensive group classes. Our health and well being is worth it!
Cinque, how nice you have four sisters and you seem to all get along. I have two sisters and a brother. We get along ok and live close but always seem to be so busy that usually it’s only holidays, birthdays, etc. that we get together.
Jacqui, welcome! I walk an hour 5 days a week and do one hour of pilates two times a week. For me, how I eat has the biggest effect on my weight loss, but the exercise is like the icing on the cake…it pushes it along a little somehow and makes me feel better mentally and physically.
Spreckles, greek yogurt! Yum! It’s my favorite to eat, use in recipes, etc.
Have a good day all!
Sherry
