  • Hi all downunders! A balmy 37 expected here today…bliss (rolling eyes)after the official 45.1 recorded on Friday.
@prc46 Those skin things are nasty!! My hubby has had 2 melanomas, several SCCs and countless BCCs removed…I think the skin specialist must be onto the third layer of skin by now:D. thankfully no further treatment was required for the melanomas and I am thankful every day for the diligence of our skin specialist.
An extra fast day yesterday and looking to do another on Tuesday…changing fast days from Mondays/Thursdays to Tuesday/Fridays starting this week. We’ll see how it goes. I am sadly quite sedentary (laziness being the only excuse)but I do go to linedance classes once or twice every week and starting up again this coming week after the Christmas break. Hoping that will shift a few kgs. I like my computer too much and spend way too much time sitting on my blot with laptop on lap!! Not only do I spend too much time on the forums but my hobby is digital scrapbooking, recording the lives of the 8 grands, so definitely too much time on the computer:D (but I love it)
Good luck with your fasting this coming week, everyone!

Given my current state of memory *rolling eyes*, I am trying hard to keep track of who’s who and where they are from. Is it possible for all currently active posters in the Southern Hemispherites forum to post where they are from? State or which part of the State would do if you don’t want to divulge your town. I feel it helps to get to know people better if you can picture where they are from. What do you think?

    Hey JayBee, I’m from Sydney.

Does anyone else have this problem / any suggestions? I’m finding the fast days quite easy until 2am when I madly crave….and succumb to the craving for chocolate! Just a couple of pieces but enough to put me well over my fast day calories, obviously resistance is much lower at this time and when half asleep! I had a hot water hot choc at about 9.30 to try and combat but didn’t help….

Northern rivers nsw here, when cravings hit I drink something first and try and distract myself.
Go for a walk, ring a friend, look up funny cats on the Internet, or even spending five minutes brushing and flossing my teeth. This gives me something to focus on, something in my mouth and that fresh minty feeling without the calories! It tricks me into thinking I’ve just finished eating.

If that fails, I will get a big crisp raw carrot and spend half an hour slowly chewing it up. It is full of fibre, vitamins and hardly any cals. Which fills me up until dinner time.

I’m sure others have many craving-busting tips and tricks. If you are craving for just choclate, maybe you have a magnesium deficiency? Pure unsweetened cocoa powder can be used in many ways, without the calories in drinking choclate or choclate blocks. It is also extremely high in magnesium and other excellent nutrients.

@c_j_l Come onto the forums and be inspired by all the stories on here (stay away from the food posts though:D)

Thanks to you and to ihavea waist for posting your locations…I am keeping a notepad file so that I can remember where you are from when you post:)

Actually I started a new thread in the Suggestions forum asking if it is possible for our locations to display under our names where the date, time and “permalink” are displayed. The thread is here: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/where-are-you-from/#post-22632
If you would like to see that feature added, make a post in that thread to record your wishes. I don’t know if it can be done but I would certainly find it helpful:)

Thanks ihaveawaist. Maybe I’ll try the teeth brushing, probably the most suitable for 2am! I am absolutely fine the rest of the time….that’s my only downfall!

    hi all,

I have just joined this forum.
I am from Adelaide, south Australia, and it is good to see so many people here from Australian and New Zealand.

I will probably post mostly on the Diabetic page as that is my main reason for joining, but will check in here from time to time.

    cheers

Ok, I just found my ‘measuring stick’. I bought two size 10 dresses from Portmans as the 12’s were a little big. I can get them on…JUST (but I wouldn’t like to try and move in them!) I’ll keep trying them on over the coming weeks and that should keep me on track. Does anyone else have a similar ‘measuring stick’?

I’m 57 and live in Sydney. I had lost 5.5 kg in 5 weeks but then came the holiday break and Ive put .5kg back on despite 3 fast days in those 2 weeks. It may only be half a kilo but I can see it in my face. I’m trying hard not to mentally panic and give up – that sounds a bit ridiculous as I write it but I’m sure you know what I mean. How does everyone else cope with setbacks?

    hi Jaybee,
good idea. I am new here and from Adelaide, South Australia. Where are you from?

Hi Peggy, just keep telling yourself that it’s a long distance marathon rather than a sprint….slow and steady wins the race.
There will always be a slight up and down, and sometimes a plateau in your weight, but if you look at in the long term, it’s worth it!
Try measuring your waistline, rather than relying too heavily on what the scales say. Don’t give up!

@c_j_l, it will be a long time before I could even dream of using a size 10 dress as a yardstick but go YOU for fitting into yours!!
@ Peggy, Thanks for posting your location. I had a gain of almost 1kg over the Christmas break. We’ll beat it though wont we!!! It is early days for me so I’m not sure how I will cope with things a few months down the track as far as losing motivation and giving up. Hoping this will be IT for me after years of trying to lose weight in more ways than I can count.
@sheoak, Thanks for posting your location too. I am from Tamworth NSW where we are about to embark on the annual Country Music Festival…hope we don’t reach the 40degree mark that we had on Friday…poor visitors if we do!! The campers will feel it most I expect.

Greetings from West Logan shire, on the southern outskirts of Brisbane. Jaybee68, you and I seem to be at a similar stage on our weight-loss journey. I can’t see myself achieving a size 10 until at least another year. Like c_j_l, I have several “measuring sticks” in my wardrobe, from size 12 to 20! I started out on the Fast WOE as a size 20-22 and am now an 18-20 – that’s in clothing with elastic in the waistline (I haven’t worn a dress since my son’s wedding 2 years ago). I like to wear short or long pants/slacks and shirts or tee-shirts or other loose tops with sleeves (mostly from Miller’s or Suzanne Grae). I find that it takes me about 6 kilos between clothing sizes. I haven’t been a size 12 since 1993. Don’t be disheartened by your small weight gain, Peggy. Even when you reach your goal weight, the scales will keep going up and down within the kilo range. Your weight won’t stay static, but the Intermittent Fast regimen will help you maintain successfully for the long term. Just think of the Christmas period as a maintenance test. We will all be back on the weight-loss road with you again next week. Jaybee68, I love Tamworth – stayed there at the “Town and Country” Motor Inn on the way down and back from my son’s wedding at the Jenolan Caves in Jan. 2012 (before the Country Music Festival). Had the best Chinese takeaway ever there (my memories usually have food associated with them!).

Wow c_j_l, size 10 at Portman, you must be close to goal weight??!! Well done! Its not a shop I’ve ventured into often, they didn’t really cater to size 16.
Now that I’ve gotten to a size 12, I might have to have a look.

    Hello from Melbourne.

c_j_l, congratulations on your size 10s from Portman’s. Yes, I also use smaller clothes as my ‘measuring stick’. Seems more reliable than the scales or even the tape measure.

Gomarg, I found your comment that you find it about 6 kilos between clothing sizes very interesting, thanks.

Peggy, urge you to keep reminding yourself about your great loss of 5 kilos in such a short time. Am sure that .5 will disappear even faster then.

    Heather

Peggy, even if you had a small gain you’re still better off than you were before….and you’ve done it before so you know you can do it again.

Size 10 isn’t as exciting as it sounds all, I’m 4 foot 9″ and according to all the charts I ‘should ‘ be a six…yukko – I’d look like a little boy!

Dayna05, they do have size 12 and up as well and some nice stuff although you do sometimes have to hunt between the barely there ‘club’ dresses!

c_j_l, its still a smaller size, well done. The funny thing for me is the last time I was a 12, back in 1996 I weighed between 5 and 9kg less than I do now. Muscle versus fat composition has obviously changed, in a good way I think.

    Hi All Southernites
Good to see all the motivation and successes. They say that most people put on about 2 kilos over the Christmas New Year period – so all who have managed to lose/maintain/or gain less than that deserve to give themselves a pat on the back and a high five.
A month and a half on the 5:2 now and still going. That really is amazing for me. 🙂
My yardstick piece of clothing is a pair of jeans which when I started doing this I could not do up the zip and there was no way that the button on the waist was going to get done up – it wasn’t even close. Now I can put them on, do up the zip and can even do the button up. If I wanted to I could wear them but I think in a week or two they will be fitting more comfortably.
When you can see something like that happening even when you get a small upwards fluctuation then you do get the encouragement that you need to keep on going.
Even better the hubby is starting to notice changes in himself and in the fit of his jeans. Had to shuffle the fasting days a couple of times over Christmas/New Year and we did our first Saturday fast this weekend. Today he was planning our next fastday for Monday. To see him taking control and being committed to this lifestyle change is just mind boggling for me. I’m stoked. It is something that is always a bit of a struggle so I think I’m signing up for this long term. 😀

@c_j_l – I’ve been sleeping badly on fast nights but for me it’s more a restless brain rather than hunger. (Maybe my brain is restless because it’s not busy processing food!) For hunger pangs during the day, I’m finding sparkling mineral water helps – it keeps up my fluids. plus the bubbles seem more filling than just plain water. Just make sure you get one without all the flavourings and sugars. And congrats on size 10! I haven’t been a size 10 since I was about 20, and only briefly then. (I’ll blame broad hips and a broad ribcage…) I would like to see a size 14 before the end of this year, though!

@peggy – My weight fluctuates up and down so I wouldn’t be too worried about half a kilo – that could just be extra water. I know a lot of people only weigh themselves every week or month or less often, but I weigh daily so I see all those fluctuations and know they’re normal. It’s all usually within a kilo, and more down than up, so I know I’m heading in the right direction!

@gomarg – very interesting about the 6 kilos between sizes – that’s probably going to be about right for me. I’ve lost a bot over 5 kilos in 2 months, and the Target cotton trousers I live in are starting to get a bit loose. Not too loose, yet, but I can see a day when I’ll have to go buy new ones in a smaller size!

My husband is supportive of me doing 5:2 and is kind of doing it with me, but I really don’t think he should lose much more weight so although he has a light dinner with me on fast nights, I encourage him to eat other things, too.

There was something else I was going to say/respond to but now I can’t remember what it was! The heat must be addling my brain (that and marking university assignments – they’re always brain-addling!)

Hi All, my yard stick has been size 22jeans and a size 22 shirt that I bought/ made three years ago that I got to wear once. Got to wear both to the parties over the weekend and people stared and some commented how great and healthy I looked. Talked about the 5:2WOL to one couple that were going to spend time today looking it up and begin this week. For me at this end of the sizes I thing it is about 12 kg between sizes. The other thing about this WOL is that over the weekend I cleared my wardrobe of evrything over size 22, there is no going back. As for location my closest regional centre is Albury/Wodonga about an hour to the north. For us down hear summer seems to have taken leave, we all had to scurry for jackets and jumpers at the 21st last night, and today only got to 24 with 70km winds, normally it would be high 30s at this time of year. OK everyone good luck with your fasts this week. Charlie

Thanks for posting your location Charlie…we were there in November, at Albury watching our grandson play hockey. Terrific commitment clearing your wardrobe of the bigger sizes…I have been on many different diets over the years and my wardrobe consists of a full range of sizes from 22 down to 14 (never got lower than a 14 on any of those diets). Maybe I should clear my big sizes too? Perhaps leaving them there is setting myself up for failure? What do you think?

I survived another fast day yesterday and felt good about it. Tomorrow my linedance group starts up again, so a bit more exercise into the mix should help.

    Have a great day everyone

@heatherfast: thank you for posting your location:). I am starting to get to know people on this thread now. My OCD has me creating a notepad document with names and places on it:)

@jaybee68 definitely clear the wardrobe of the sizes that are now to big. I personally find it very cleansing and inspiring. Maybe even treat yourself to something new at your current size. I spent all my Xmas money on new gym clothing, the lululemon brand. It gives me an extra ego boost as its Canadian sizing and I can buy an 8, lol.

@charlie its awesome to look back at those bigger clothes and see how far you have come. Well done.

The scales are messing with my head currently. I saw my goal of being under 70kg on Xmas day, 69.8kg. Today after 3 fast days week I was 70.1kg. Guess I will see what the next wk brings…

    Dayna

great to see so many aussies here.. i am in Melbourne and thinking about starting this program, just reading up on it a bit first to see how it works and what you gotta do.. cheers

    Yay, Charlie, good for you!
I have been tossing clothes that can no longer have darts taken in and was given Myer gift cards for Christmas, which I will keep until I’m slim and trim..lol!

Just out of curiosity, I measured myself this morning and find I’ve lost ..
    16cm off my waist
    5cm off my bust
and my hips are now 104cm (I forgot do them at the start)
My BMI has dropped from 30.1 to 27.9

Today is fast day and I’ve been busy with housework I left over the weekend, due to the extreme heat.
Storms are forecast this morning and it’s hot already!

Jaybee68, I’m near Bribie Is, north of Brisbane

    Hi everyone
im just about to start, and i would like some feedback on the merits( or otherwise) of consecutive fasting days.
It seems to me that it might be tough at first, but easier after a few weeks.
    Im in Sydney

Well done on all of you having a wardrobe revolution! Keep up the great work!

johno5 my advice to you is unless you absolutely have to fast on consecutive days, don’t try it. Many poeple find it too hard, and end up giving up. This way of eating is for the long term, and therefore, the easier and simpler you make it, the longer you will stay with it! With the non consecutive days of your choosing, the end of the fast day is just that! You then can look forward to normal eating the very next day.

Just try one day, see how you find it.

Hi I’ve done a couple of consecutive days over this holiday season due to social events the rest of the week and found it quite easy, but I agree with (sorry didn’t see the name) who said it’s better for the long haul to do two separated days, it’s just psychologically easier and that’s really important if you’re to stay with this rather than it be a fad.

I’m on a fast today, had one scrambled egg at about 8.30 and now nothing till dinner which is a bit of a relief as we still have boxes of chocolates around from Christmas and I had too many yesterday!

Thanks for the encouragement, I am back on the horse today and feeling calmer.

Hello all downunderites. I’m from Melbourne. Where the weather today is like winter…
Anyway, I’m new to this 5:2 lifestyle, and to this forum. Hubby & I had our first fast day yesterday and coped surprisingly well (I was surprised, am always a bit fearful of being hungry, weird but true). One day down, next planned fast day is Thursday and we’ll be at work, so am not sure how I’ll cope with that but guess I’ll find out. Maybe breakfasting late morning/lunch?
Have managed to lose over 20kgs with Weight Watchers, but been at the same weight now for over 6 months with still at least 5 kgs to go to ‘goal’ weight and to have BMI of 25. So thought I’d give this a go, and as hubby was also willing to support me in this by joining me (he could definitely do with dropping a few kgs) decided we’d try. Mind you, the main reason I’m doing all this is for health reasons and if I lose those extra kilos, whoopee, I’ll be happy!
Will be watching this post with interest, especially to get tips and encouragement about how to manage the fast days….
very glad to have discovered this!

I will be resuming my first fast day tomorrow after two weeks non stop eating and drinking. I haven’t been brave enough to jump on the scales and won’t do so until I have completed two fasts, ie Tuesday and Thursday (hopefully). I am ready to get back into the routine though, so here’s hoping. Well done to all those people who have fasted thru the holidays

    Hi All
This is my first post on this forum so please excuse the long post.
I live and work in Canberra.
I found out about this amazing 5:2 life style when I saw 15 mins of Eat, Fast, Live Longer on a plane to Melbourne late November 2013. When I got home I googled it and watched the full episode on youtube.
After some initial trepidation I started on 4 Dec when I weighed 82.3kg.
Currently 79.2kg as of this morning and yesterday was not a fast day.
I’ve been down to 78.3 but Christmas put a bit of a blip in things and even though I fasted 2 days per week I was on holiday at the Gold Coast and ate and drank too much, going back up to 81.3kg by Dec 30.
I find that my weight fluctuates through the week and that the most optimistic time to weigh in is before breakfast the morning after a fast day.
My general weight trend is downwards though and I think obsessing with the small variations is isn’t useful.
I find fast days are getting easier and are now part of my normal routine.
The strange this is I actually look forward to them but the positivity tails off by about 2:30 in the afternoon!
A mid morning coffee helps me get through lunchtime and I also go to the gym at lunch which seems to be a short term appetite suppressant.
For me drinking lots of water lessens the hunger pangs which are worst from 2:30 to 4:00pm.
I also get cravings for something sweet after dinner. A few blueberries or raspberries helps with that and they are quite low in calories.

But the main thing that gets me through fast days is knowing it is only until breakfast tomorrow when I reward myself with my pre-brekky weigh in.
My target is 72kg with a waist of 87cm (currently down to 97 from 102).
I hope to make that by my 60th in April.

Hi everyone, (DH & I are in Adelaide)great to see so many people, more and more each day trying to see if the WOL suits them. DH and I encouraged and succeeded in getting 2 of our friends to try this WOL over the holiday period. They saw how positive we were about it, and went out and bought the book the following day.

After a few weeks of over indulging over Christmas / New Years – DH and I are now back into it. I have refused to weigh myself as I can feel I have regained some of my lost weight, but not too much…. I hope 🙂

We have decided to try AFD for 2 weeks and see how we go – well making our fast days Monday, Wed & Fri so 3:4….. is that AFD still?

I wish everyone success and more importantly POSITIVE thoughts for the rest of the week. Where there is a will – there is a way!

    🙂

Hello from Canberra! This is day one for me. And I am encouraged by what I read. I find that my body seems to sit happily at 73.5kg and I am hoping to jolt it into action! Well gentle jolt…. I would like to lose about 6-8kg. Not necessarily a huge number, but for me you might as well ask me to climb Everest. I look forward to reading more of other people’s experience. Kind regards.

Hello fellow Canberra-ite. I too saw this diet on a documentary televised on ABC or SBS. Went out and bought the book and read it in a day. I have tried every diet – and struggled with all of them. Agonised over every gram weighed. No more. I’m going to make friends with food – properly.

Wow….so many awesome stories to read, hi everyone! I was lucky to stumble across such an active forum….keeping me motivated. Had my first weigh this morning after two fasts and down .8 kg which I’m pretty happy with….will see how next week goes but so far so good!

Glad you’re back feeling better Peggy…onwards and upwards

Thanks for posting your locations everyone, it sure helps me to get to know you. Well done to those who had losses, well done to those who completed successful fasts, well done to those you are climbing back on the wagon…it’s all good!! I have a fast day today AND the first linedance class of the year, so we will see how that goes. Sadly the weight is not falling off me. I am not counting cals on my eating days so perhaps I am going over the TDEE…I am just a tad over 5ft and rather sedentary so it is not a high number of calories daily.

    Hey there jaybee,
Have a wonderful time boot-skooting, wish I was there moving to the music and having a good laugh.
I lost 1.1 kg after yesterday’s fast! So I’m feeling positive that after Thursday I’ll be moving off the damn plateau and going down the hill again, towards my weight loss goal of 65 kg. that’s 11 left to lose.

@jaybee it sucks being vertically challenged doesn’t it. Doesn’t take many kg’s to show on a short frame. Any way here’s to making the best of what we were dealt!

@ihaveawaist well done on the loss, it really motivates you to keep going doesn’t it! 65kg is my next goal too. I will reassess when I get there to see if I could actually live and maintain anything lighter.

Fast day today and Thursday. Here’s hoping the day passes quickly.

It is b cold in Tasmania today and has been for a few days. I caught the coach from Devonport to Hobart yesterday and could see snow up in the central highlands! Snow! In January! Brrrr.

I’m laughing at everyone giving their height in feet and inches and their weight in kilograms. Duh, we are crazy. I will try and set an example 😉

    I’m 163cm tall and started 5:2 in May 2013 at 83kg. I got to 73kg in Nov ’13, and hit a plateau. I’m aiming for 65kg in May’14. Today I weigh 72kg.

I’m quietly confident that I’ll stick with 5:2 forever.

    Hi guys,

I’m in Melbourne, where winter appears to have never left !!I started this eating strategy around mid November and have been on it ever since, quite happy to stay on it for the rest of my life really, but my goal is to eventually attain a 6:1 strategy and maintain a weight of around 70kg’s.(20kgs to go). I cant believe in the last 6 weeks I have been to umpteen functions and dinners and Xmas parties and not once have I felt the need to hold back with food or alcohol.I had 3 Xmas functions on Xmas day alone but took comfort in the knowledge that I didn’t feel a need for ‘Seconds’I don’t always overeat on my non fast days but I’m pretty sure in the book it says not to have the feeling of going without, so i don’t !
I have lost 6kgs in that time and I am at a stage now where i can confidently slot in an extra fast day if i feel i have overdone in the previous couple of days .
My blood pressure readings have been miraculous 113/75 where they had previously been 150/90. I am urging my brother to go it , as like me , weight has always been a problem, since our late twenties.
Cant wait to see the doctor in the next month or so and get new blood readings.
Haven’t hit a a plateau as yet, but I’m sure it’s not too far away, might go to an ADF when that occurs.
    Cheers

    Hi everyone!

I live in Sydney. I have only just started the 5:2 diet, my first day being yesterday. I have decided to have Monday and Thursday as my fast days. Yesterday, my first fast day, went better than I expected. Surprisingly I wasn’t hungry. If anything I have been hungrier today, but am trying to be sensible about my food choices. A work colleague has been on the diet for approximately six months and has been encouraging me to go on it. I’ve always put it in the too hard basket, but the extra kilos I am carrying at the moment has finally pushed me to give it a try. I’m feeling very positive and excited. My goal is to feel better and to lose the extra five kilos I’m carrying.

It is great being able to read all your posts. Being able to read everyone’s personal experiences is a great help.

First day done. It wasn’t too bad. I did feel hungry – or was I mistaking ’empty’ for hunger? Anyway I survived it and felt a small achievement. I still wonder if this will work; but I’ll give it a solid effort and see what happens. I still don’t quite understand TDEE – grateful if someone could explain how I apply this? Good luck everyone – I love reading your posts!

Snazzyjazz, your TDEE (Total Daily Calorie Expenditure) is explained in this link (which is also on the top right of this page): http://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/ .

@ihaveawaist. thanks I enjoyed being back at dancing…all my friends are there:) I have done OK on my fast day today too although I didnt measure exactly the meal I am eating tonight. We’ll see what the scales say tomorrow. Congrats on your 1.1kg loss, that is tremendous and I am so jealous:)

@dayna..Those extra kgs sure do show up on short people.

@roba..It is funny isnt how we mix and match between metric and imperial. I have no idea what weight I am in stones, and I have no idea what height I am in metric:D

Hi Joestar, you have done so well on 5:2, great job. To see not only the weight coming off but also the improvement in your medical stats must be so gratifying.

@Snazzy Jazz, congrats on surviving your first fast day. The sense of achievement is very empowering I think. I didnt have a clue about TDEE either at the beginning, some nice person pointed me in the right direction like Gomarg has pointed you:)

There is a beautiful cool breeze blowing here this evening. So pleasant after the past few hot days with hot winds. A balmy 31 degrees max today and 28 at this moment…I can live with that:)

I’m in South Australia and just started doing Monday and Thursday too! Must be a pattern forming? I’m still a bit sceptical. It I really hope it works ! 😉

Hi everyone, welcome to the newbies. To FVR two months ago I saw the documentary and knew I had to give this WOL a serious go, then when I weighed in on Saturday I had lost 9.2 kg from my start weight, and by this morning even more. Give this a serious go, the only thing you have to loose is the extra kg that you do not want anyway.
Joestar, well done on the blood pressure, I thought I had done well getting mine down to 123/74 but yours is amazing.
I did take the hint and buy two new shirts in my new size, and Aussienow, since starting I have lost 12 cm off my torso, that’s shows how much fat my organs were competing with. Well good luck everyone with your fasting for the rest of the week. My other treat is that I have ordered the books Fast Diet and Fast Exercise just to keep me more on track. Cheers Charlie.

Looks like doc Mosley has inspired many of us to start this year with a new way of eating and life in general!

Welcome to all the new forum writers I’ll be really interested to hear how you’re all going. This continent being such a big one, it’s wonderful to keep in touch and hear about other’s struggles and triumphs, rather than feeling alone in your journey to better health, I’ve had some unexpected side effects, like reduced snoring and IBS symptoms, along with the weight loss.

Charlie G you are very inspiring and congrats on the great work! Not only with your weight and waistline, but also on your blood pressure, same with you Joestar! That’s a really low reading and its well worth being on the 5/2 just for that outcome alone. I’ve had some pretty crap b.p. readings in the past, and am looking forward to seeing if there is any changes into positive territory for me next time I visit my local doc.

    Hi all, I’m from Perth
I did my first fast day yesterday. It went really well considering I went to the movies with my kids and a friend. All I drank was water. The popcorn smelt fab but I was strong.
